French Polynesia President Visits Seabourn Pursuit in Papeete

by Julie Bouchner April 16, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

Seabourn welcomed Moetai Brotherson, the President of French Polynesia, aboard Seabourn Pursuit on April 7, 2025, during its call to Papeete, Tahiti. This marked the first official visit by President Brotherson to the ship, highlighting the increasing significance of French Polynesia in Seabourn’s expedition program. Accompanied by advisors, he participated in a welcome reception, toured the ship and submarines, and enjoyed dinner with Captain Steven Macbeath and senior officers. This visit underscores Seabourn’s commitment to strengthening its ties with the region through expedition travel.

“Beyond the paradise postcard, Tahiti and her islands are a fantastic field for explorers,” said Moetai Brotherson, President of French Polynesia. “I was impressed by the spirit that this magnificent ship, Seabourn Pursuit, carries. The attention to culture, nature, and our place, as humans in these pristine yet fragile ecosystems set this cruise apart. I, for a few hours, felt like James Bond, Sylvia Earle, and West Hansen. And that, I reckon, felt pretty awesome!”

During the visit, President Brotherson expressed interest in Seabourn’s expedition program and submarine operations, exploring opportunities to expand small-ship tourism in French Polynesia. As the administration focuses on growing tourism, especially in the cruise and expedition sectors, this visit was a valuable opportunity to enhance Seabourn’s presence in the region.

The expedition features advanced equipment and a 23-member team of experts, including scientists and naturalists, offering a variety of activities. Built to PC6 Polar Class standards for remote environments, the ship includes nearly 30,000 square feet of deck space and indoor and outdoor areas with nearly 270-degree views. A 4K GSS Cineflex Camera on the Constellation Lounge mast broadcasts images from miles ahead to monitors throughout the ship and in guest suites.

Seabourn Pursuit is currently exploring the South Pacific and will return to the Kimberley region in May for its second expedition season in Western Australia.

“It was a true honor to welcome President Brotherson on board Seabourn Pursuit,” said Mark Tamis, President of Seabourn. “French Polynesia is one of the most awe-inspiring places we visit, aligning beautifully with the spirit of exploration at the heart of our expedition program. We are committed to creating meaningful partnerships and delivering luxury experiences that respect and celebrate the destinations we explore. We look forward to deepening our connection to this remarkable region.”

Unpacking MSC World America’s Food Options

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine April 14, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

A cursory glance at my surroundings on the new MSC World America revealed the glitz and glam the line’s vessels are known for, from its marble floors and crystal chandeliers to MSC’s famous Swarovski crystal stairs. But, this ship was built with an innovative floor plan North American passengers haven’t seen before. MSC World America has a lot going on, including two huge promenades (one outdoors), a thrilling Cliffhanger Swing, seven unique districts and exciting entertainment venues like a hidden bar and one-of-a-kind comedy club.

A black-clad sushi chef prepares a generous row of plates containing tuna nigiri and inside-out rolls on MSC Cruises' MSC World America.

Changes with the line are even more pronounced when it comes to dining on the ship, with new included restaurant options and several never-heard-of specialty dining venues on board. World America is home to the first Eataly at sea, which features an authentic Italian dining experience that fits in perfectly considering MSC’s Mediterranean roots. Guests can also indulge in delicious Greek dishes at Paxos, or they can nosh on easy favorites like hot dogs and popcorn on the go at Promenade Bites.

Another new concept from MSC, Luna Park Pizza & Burger, serves up American (and kid-friendly) favorites like pizza, hamburgers, corn dogs, and chicken tenders. Families with children will also want to check out Sweet Temptations, which is smartly positioned at the end of an 11-story dry slide on the World Promenade. This informal eatery lets kids design their own ice cream bars or treat themselves to freshly made crepes, waffles, and decadent milkshakes galore. Of course, adults are more than welcome to order confections of their own!

RELATED: More MSC World America Launch Coverage

World America also boasts four main dining venues (La Foglia, Esagono, Hexagon, and Bubbles), two huge buffets, an exclusive restaurant just for Yacht Club guests and the popular speciality dining options MSC cruisers have already grown to love: Butcher’s Cut, Kaito Sushi, Hola! Tacos & Cantina, and more.

What’s been my favorite so far? I found the sushi at Kaito Sushi incredibly fresh and delicious. I also indulged in cotton candy from Promenade Bites, which was a first for me on a big ship like this one.

The bottom line: You won’t go hungry on the new MSC World America, whether you’re a foodie who wants to try new cuisine or you just don’t want to cook for the week. Now, if you don’t mind, I need to get back to the buffet.

MSC Foundation Launches Marine Conservation Center at Ocean Cay

by Julie Bouchner April 11, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

The MSC Foundation officially opened its Marine Conservation Center at Ocean Cay on April 10, advancing its commitment to coral conservation and marine research in the Bahamas.

MORE ABOUT THE CONSERVATION CENTER

  • The center will serve as a hub for biologists, scientists, students, and visitors, featuring interactive pavilions, a lecture hall, a Bio Lab, and a land-based coral nursery.
  • It will also offer educational programs highlighting the importance of marine ecosystems and the need to protect coral reefs, serving as the hub for the MSC Foundation’s Super Coral Reefs Program.
  • Launched in 2019, this program focuses on restoring coral reefs in the 64-square-mile area around Ocean Cay with resilient coral species adapted to environmental stressors like rising ocean temperatures.

Pierfrancesco Vago, Chair of the MSC Foundation Executive Committee, said: “The opening of our Marine Conservation Center marks a defining moment in our multigenerational commitment to ocean conservation. It brings to life the MSC Foundation’s concrete plans for restoring coral reefs, advancing science, and creating training opportunities for Bahamian and international students. With the continued support of the Government of The Bahamas and local authorities, our work here is contributing to the circular economy through ecosystem preservation, regeneration, and knowledge sharing.”

MORE ABOUT THE OPENING AND CEREMONY

The Marine Conservation Center opened on April 10, highlighting The Bahamas’ commitment to marine conservation and sustainable tourism. This facility will enhance scientific research in line with the Bahamas Department of Environmental Planning and Protection and provide educational opportunities for Bahamian students and researchers.

In partnership with the University of The Bahamas, The Bahamas Agriculture and Marine Science Institute, and the Perry Institute for Marine Science, the MSC Foundation aims to prepare future environmental stewards to protect the ocean.

The opening ceremony featured Pierfrancesco Vago, Chair of the MSC Foundation Executive Committee; Diego Aponte; Rick Sasso; Executive Director Daniela Picco; Prime Minister Philip Davis; Deputy Prime Minister I. Chester Cooper; and marine biologist Dr. Sylvia Earle, along with other key officials and stakeholders.

Daniela Picco, Executive Director of the MSC Foundation, stated: “This facility will connect marine scientists, educators, and the public, annually supporting up to 30 marine science students from four universities. By strengthening partnerships with Bahamian and international experts, engaging the wider community and making a bridge to hundreds of thousands of island visitors, we have laid foundations.”

Dr. Sylvia Earle, renowned marine biologist and founder of Mission Blue, participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony nearly two years after Ocean Cay was designated a “Hope Spot.” She stated, “Bravo to MSC and the MSC Foundation for creating the Marine Conservation Center at Ocean Cay, a treasured Mission Blue Hope Spot. The Center is a place to discover why the ocean matters to everyone and to inspire actions for its restoration and care.”

The facility features a fully equipped bio-lab and The Aquaria, a land-based coral nursery with 22 coral tanks to support restoration efforts. It also includes a 50-seat lecture hall for educational programs and scientific collaboration.

The center’s Welcome Hub and Discovery Pavilion will provide immersive experiences for visitors, including guided tours, interactive exhibits, and hands-on coral restoration activities to enhance engagement in marine conservation.

About the Super Coral Reefs Program

The Foundation collaborated with the University of Miami and Nova Southeastern University in 2020 to establish the Super Coral Reefs Program through graduate internships in marine science. Since 2022, the focus has been on identifying resilient coral species at Ocean Cay, conducting research under the Bahamas Department of Environmental Planning and Protection, and propagating endangered elkhorn coral. This work supports MSC Cruises’ restoration of Ocean Cay’s marine ecosystem.

Key accomplishments include:

  • Identifying thermal resilience in some elkhorn coral populations.
  • Developing methods to grow coral in open-water nurseries.
  • Initiating out-planting of resilient corals, aiming to reach 6,000 annually.
  • Achieving 100% survival of nursery-grown corals during the summer 2023 marine heatwave.

Alajmo Family Brings Italian Creations to Crystal’s Kitchens

by Porthole Cruise and Travel April 9, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Crystal Cruises is reaching for new culinary heights by partnering with Chef Massimiliano “Max” Alajmo, the youngest chef ever to earn three Michelin stars, and his brother Raffaele, the restaurateur behind Italy’s Le Calandre family of restaurants, and Raffaele’s son Giovanni, who has led the collaboration.

Together, the Alajmos have unveiled a new menu for Crystal’s Italian venue Osteria d’Ovidio, hoping to establish Crystal Cruises as home to the most exceptional dining at sea.

“Each dish we’ve created for Osteria d’Ovidio is a chapter in a story — one that celebrates the beauty, simplicity and depth of Italian cuisine,” said Chef Alajmo. “We wanted to craft a menu that evokes emotion, transports guests to the heart of Italy and pays homage to the rich culinary traditions that inspire us. It’s about more than just flavors; it’s about creating an experience that lingers long after the meal is over.”

Osteria d’Ovidio is a specialty dining restaurant on Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony, part of a portfolio of Crystal restaurants that include Umi Uma, Beebar by Riccardo Giraudi, and the only Nobu at sea.

“Massimiliano and Raffaele have crafted a menu that seamlessly blends their Michelin-starred expertise with the spirit of discovery that defines Crystal,” says Crystal Cruises VP of Food & Beverage Operations Gunter Lorenz.

Dishes are arranged in three tasting menus, each with its own particular theme. “Italia” features classics from across the peninsula, like Lasagnetta Bolognese (lasagna with meat sauce), Parmigiana del Melanzane (eggplant parmesan), and Sorbetto Bellini (a peach and prosecco sorbet).

The “Le Calandre” menu highlights the signature dishes of the Alajmo family’s flagship restaurant, like Taglionlini al Fumo (egg pasta with smoked butter), Risotto Allo Zafferano con Polvere di Liquirizia (saffron risotto with licorice powder), and Sorbetto Frizzante al Limone (fizzy lemon sorbet).

The “Venezia” menu focuses in on traditional dishes from the city of canals, like Carpaccio di Tonno (smoked tuna carpaccio with caviar and sturgeon sauce), Branzino alla Verbena (sea bass with sour potato purée, verbena oil, and sautéed vegetables), and Bruschetta Dolce (a sweet bruschetta with chocolate hazelnut spread, extra virgin olive oil and chili pepper).

Viking Unveils Hydrogen-Fueled Ship

by Porthole Cruise and Travel April 8, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard will be the site of a history-making launch next year, when the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, Viking Libra, sets sail.

Viking Cruises’ 998-passenger, 784-foot-long vessel will use onboard hydrogen for both propulsion and electricity generation with zero emissions.

The ship will not be unique for long. The upcoming Viking Astrea, also under construction at the Ancona shipyard and scheduled for delivery in 2027, will be powered by hydrogen as well.

“From the outset, we have designed our river and ocean ships thoughtfully, to reduce their fuel consumption, and we are very proud that Viking Libra and Viking Astrea will be even more environmentally friendly,” says Viking Chairman and CEO Torstein Hagen. “Viking made the principled decision to invest in hydrogen, which offers a true zero-emission solution. We look forward to welcoming the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship to our fleet in 2026.”

The ship’s state-of-the-art hydrogen propulsion system, combined with fuel-cell technology capable of generating up to six megawatts of power, sets a new benchmark for the decarbonization of the cruise industry. Libra will also boast innovative, custom-made hydrogen loading and storage systems to boost operational efficiency and maintain a steady supply of fuel regardless of supply-chain issues.

A key contributor is Isotta Fraschini Motori (IFM), a Fincantieri subsidiary specialising in fuel-cell technologies.

“With the Viking Libra, we are not only delivering the world’s first cruise ship powered by hydrogen stored on board, but we are also reinforcing our commitment to shaping the future of sustainable maritime transportation,” says Fincantieri CEO and Managing Director Pierroberto Folgiero.

Norwegian Aqua sails into New York City

by Porthole Cruise and Travel April 8, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest addition to the fleet, Norwegian Aqua, sailed into the Big Apple yesterday to give 2,000 invited fans a preview before sailing down to a formal christening event at PortMiami on April 13.

The ship is 10 percent larger than sisters Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva, and features new attractions like the Aqua Slidecoaster, the world’s first hybrid rollercoaster and waterslide at sea.

“All of us at NCL are thrilled to finally welcome our newest incredible ship, Norwegian Aqua, to the U.S., especially here in New York City,” said Norwegian’s president, David J. Herrera. “New York and the tri-state area are an incredibly important market for us, so to showcase the beautiful Norwegian Aqua here in the Big Apple during her inaugural season was a no-brainer. We cannot wait for her to return to New York City in August.”

After the naming ceremony, the ship is due to begin 7-day Caribbean sailings from Port Canaveral through July. In August, Norwegian Aqua sails 5- and 7-day cruises to Bermuda from New York City through October 2025. Then, October through April 2026, Aqua returns to Miami to sail 5- and 7-day Eastern Caribbean itineraries featuring a visit to Great Stirrup Cay, the line’s private island in the Bahamas, where a multi-ship pier will debut in late 2025.

In addition to the adrenaline-pumping parallel tracks of the Aqua Slidecoaster, the ship features The Drop, the 10-story jaw-dropping dry slide; The Stadium outdoor activity complex; and the Bull’s Eye Bar, where guests can play interactive darts with a beer or cocktail. There’s also the brand-new Glow Court, a digital sports complex with an interactive LED floor, which converts from a game space to a nightclub in the evening.

For less action-oriented cruisers, Aqua has more space in the soothing adults-only Vibe Beach Club, as well as 17 restaurants and 18 bars and lounges including a Metropolitan Bar redesigned with a grand piano for live entertainment. Other entertainment options include the tribute show Revolution: A Celebration of Prince, interactive shows like Price is Right LIVE, and an enhanced version of Elements: The World Expanded, a show that blends acrobatics, magic, and visuals inspired by the four elements – earth, wind, fire and water.
