Coral Conservation Grows

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine May 5, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Always at the forefront of ecological education, the nonprofit MSC Foundation continues to expand its research into coral reef restoration.

At a three-day workshop, MSC officials disclosed its future plans in its 2030 Roadmap for Coral Conservation, culled from discussions with 20 noted conservationists.

The plans include the openings of new educational facilities and a campaign to raise awareness of the need to save coral reefs under the Super Coral Program. Thus far, among its other achievements, The Program has developed techniques to grow corals in open-water nurseries.

“I’m heartened by the Program’s progress,” said Chief Scientific Officer Dr. David Smith.

Literary Dublin

by Kate Wickers May 2, 2025
written by Kate Wickers

“Now, have I got a story for you…” is a greeting as common as “hello” in Dublin, one of the world’s greatest cities of literature, where lyrical storytelling is as important a tradition today as it was when Bram Stoker put pen to paper to write Dracula or W.B. Yeats his Nobel Prize–winning poetry. The city’s heart is Trinity College, where Stoker, Yeats, and Oscar Wilde studied, and contemporary author Sally Rooney’s troubled youngsters (from her best-selling novel Normal People) spring easily to life. The highlight of a visit here is the 213-foot Long Room in the Old Library, which holds 200,000 books (although under long-term restoration, it remains impressive) and is lined with marble busts of literary greats including Dublin native Jonathan Swift, one of Ireland’s most influential writers. Not to be missed either is the new Book of Kells Experience, home to a manuscript created by monks in 800CE. Despite its long-ago origins, the text and illustrations look freshly inked, and the accompanying exhibition is magical and brings the script alive.

Shelved Treasures

Marsh’s is Ireland’s oldest library, rammed with floor-to-ceiling oak bookshelves that are over 300 years old, and an unusual row of study cages. Each has one solitary desk and chair that were used by scholars poring over rare, valuable manuscripts considered too precious not to be under lock and key.

The Museum of Literature Ireland is found on St. Stephen’s Green in what was once a private Georgian mansion. The prize of its collection are Joyce’s letters and notebooks, but many other Irish writers are celebrated, from  Booker Prize–winner Anne Enright to national treasure Edna O’Brien, and Nobel Prize–winning poet and playwright Seamus Heaney, who lived in Dublin for 40 years. To understand the past struggles of Irish writers for free cultural expression, you only need to read “The Blacklist” drawn up by the Committee of Evil Literature in 1926, which includes titles such as The Sporting Times and Women’s Weekly in its long list of corruptible matter.

In a city that brims with bookshops, Ulysses Rare Books is one of the most interesting, and where, if you ask nicely, they’ll give you a look at a limited edition, such as Joyce’s Ulysses illustrated by Henri Matisse, signed by both author and artist … and selling for a cool €25,000 Euros ($27,045). The story goes that the men fell out after Joyce discovered Matisse hadn’t bothered to read his weighty tome. For a more pocket-friendly selection of Ireland-centric books, head to nearby shops Hodges Figgis or Winding Stair, Dublin’s oldest independent bookstore, on the north side of the River Liffey. Also on this side of the water is The James Joyce Centre, to which Joycean enthusiasts flock to see the door of famous No. 7 Eccles Street where Leopold and Molly Bloom.…

Vancouver’s Peak Cruise Season Has Arrived, Bringing Large Numbers of Visitors to Downtown

by Porthole Cruise and Travel May 1, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Visitors to Canada Place and surrounding areas in downtown Vancouver should expect heavier crowds and traffic through late September as the cruise season peaks.

The Canada Place cruise terminal at the Port of Vancouver is set for a strong 2025 season, with over 300 ship calls and 1.2 million passenger visits expected. Most activity happens between late April and late September during the Alaska cruise season.

“We’re thrilled to be embarking on another successful season for Vancouver’s thriving cruise sector, with more than a million passengers expected to pass through Canada Place in coming months,” said Chance McKee, Cruise Account Representative at the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority. “Robust passenger volumes deliver a welcome boost for local businesses and tourism operators, and also mean that those visiting downtown Vancouver may experience busy crowds as excited tourists explore our beautiful city.”

Between May 5 and September 22, 35,000 to 50,000 passengers are expected at the terminal every Friday through Monday. A cruise ship is scheduled nearly every day, with many weekends hosting multiple ships.

“We’re ecstatic to be in the full swing of our season sailing from Vancouver, and know our guests are too,” said Bill Fletcher, Holland America Line’s senior director of sales enablement. “Vancouver is one of the premier hubs from which our ships explore Alaska, with four Holland America ships sailing from Vancouver this week alone and 74 scheduled for the season. We estimate our guests and crew will spend nearly $18 million at local restaurants, shops and attractions this season, while our ships will spend even more provisioning at local vendors between trips.”

The busy season will increase pedestrian and vehicle traffic downtown, along with higher demand for taxis, rideshares, and public transit. Travelers between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. should plan ahead, allow extra time, or use alternate routes and off-peak hours when possible.

Vancouver Police will help manage traffic and pedestrian flow at key intersections, and additional port authority staff will be on-site to assist.

To improve safety and manage congestion, the City of Vancouver is testing one-way traffic on Canada Place near the terminal.

“We expect the City of Vancouver’s plan to turn Canada Place into a one-way street this cruise season will provide a huge positive benefit for the area—creating a safer and more vibrant experience for everyone by significantly improving pedestrian and traffic flows,” said McKee. “Vancouver’s annual influx of cruise visitors supports local businesses and enriches our community, and we appreciate everyone’s cooperation in making a trip downtown a welcoming experience for all.”

Canada Place is one of North America’s top ports for Alaska cruises. Many ships start and end their itineraries there, also using the port to service and provision. Each visit contributes over $3 million in direct local economic activity.

Head to the Port of Vancouver’s website to view the 2025 cruise ship schedule.

MSC Cruises Expands Family Entertainment Options for Summer 2025

by Porthole Cruise and Travel April 30, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

MSC Cruises will expand its family-focused entertainment offerings across its fleet starting in June 2025, the company announced Tuesday.

The updates include new game shows, parades, and activities aimed at children, teenagers and their families. Several additions will feature branded collaborations and new technology-driven competitions.

“With MSC Cruises being a family-owned company, we know what it takes to keep the whole family happy on vacation,” says Matteo Mancini, the line’s family entertainment development director. “Guests can look forward to more interactive game shows, more sports, more parties, and a fresh take on teen entertainment. “

Among the additions is the LEGO Family Game Show, which sees parents and children compete in timed challenges using LEGO bricks. The challenge will be rolled out across the fleet after a trial on MSC World America. A LEGO-themed parade featuring seven mascots will also take place on select ships, including MSC World Europa and MSC Virtuosa.

MSC Cruises will also launch DOREMIX Family Disco, a dance event led by the cruise line’s Doremi mascot. The event includes music competitions for various age groups and will feature an original soundtrack available on digital platforms.

Two new game shows, Boxes and MSC Boom, will debut this summer. In Boxes, participants will face challenges hidden in sealed boxes. MSC Boom will incorporate technology-based games and prizes.

The cruise line is also expanding its partnership with Guinness World Records, offering guests the chance to attempt record-breaking events on 16 ships. Additional competitive activities include a PlayStation 5 Formula 1 Sim Racing Tournament.

Teen-focused updates include expanded sports options and dedicated versions of existing onboard events such as the Silent Disco and quiz nights.

For parents, MSC Cruises will introduce the Golden Party, a new adults-only event that allows grownups to unwind without the kids. Trivia enthusiasts will be able to test their knowledge with 75 original quizzes available on all ships during the regular daytime Quiz O’Clock.

The line already provides five age-based kids clubs on every ship, ranging from infants to 17-year-olds, which include complimentary meals and supervised activities throughout the day. That’s in addition to family-focused fun with amenities that include waterparks, cinemas, and amusement areas.

The summer program will begin in June across multiple ships in the fleet.

Ship Review: Truth and American Glory

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine April 30, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Who doesn’t remember sitting through history class in elementary school wondering how historical events actually took place? My imagination often ran wild as I went down my imaginary rabbit hole, attempting to envision whichever history lesson was being presented.

Strongly convinced that travel brings history to life, I boarded American Cruise Lines’ new coastal cat, American Glory. I selected the Cape Codder itinerary, conjuring the adventures of the Pilgrims. I’d been taught that the Pilgrims intentionally arrived at Plymouth Rock on the Mayflower. But did they? (More on this in a moment.)

The coastal catamaran is a brand new kind of ship, but it does have a historic feel. The Mayflower carried 102 Pilgrims and other passengers all crammed into a space of about 1,600 square feet, seeking a new home on an unfamiliar coast. A replica of the Mayflower is berthed just a short stroll from where American Glory docks. American Glory comfortably fits 100 passengers on a sleek new catamaran designed especially for sailing shallow waters and visiting small ports that larger vessels can’t navigate.

SIDEBAR/BOX: American Glory Specs

Joining American Glory

Arriving in Boston the night before boarding, we stayed at the Four Seasons Hotel which American Cruise Lines offers as an added option. After a good night’s sleep, we boarded a bus that gave us a tour of historical Boston, finally ending at the pier in the Seaport District where we embarked American Glory. The process was well-organized and a great introduction to what we could expect in the next week of sailing.

By the time we came aboard, it was lunch time. We explored our large Vista Balcony stateroom, 350 square feet of space, noting all of the storage and the roomy layout. Plenty of outlets and USB ports, a nice desk, and a balcony perfect for sitting while enjoying the view. Other features include a comfy chair and no thresholds to the cabin or large bathroom. We felt quite at home immediately.

Crew encouraged us to navigate to the dining room where lunch was being served. We scoured the menu and remarked at the variety of choices to suit any meal preferences. We found a favorite server, sitting at her station whenever possible during the remainder of the cruise.

Where we sailed

American Cruise Lines offers both complimentary and premium shore excursions. We chose a variety of each and added our own exploration.

As expected, the itinerary oozed with history. Coastal cruising differs from both river and ocean cruising. Each port was packed with typical New England character, like white steeples, weathered clapboard houses, and of course, lighthouses.

The historians on board and the shore excursion guides dispelled the Pilgrim landing myth during our visit to Provincetown, a port with plenty of excursions. The complimentary trolley tour gave the updated version of the landing of the Pilgrims. They first landed in Provincetown, then sailed down the coast to settle in Plymouth.

In Plymouth, we walked to Plymouth Rock and to the National Monument to the Forefathers. Reaching 81 feet, this granite structure pays tribute to those who crossed on the Mayflower.

Some ports, like Plymouth, are better known than others, like the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, which seemed a curious choice. When I heard that we could experience a bridge simulator, I figured out why we stopped there: I jumped at the opportunity to captain our boat from the comfort of a room on the campus. The multimillion-dollar bridge simulator is so realistic it could cause seasickness at the right settings.

Other places we visited included Newport, Rhode Island; Martha’s Vineyard; and the fishing and whaling capital of New Bedford. Having strong senses of FOMO, we struggled with choosing which of the options most appealed to us, often having to make difficult decisions about what to save for our next Cape Cod visit.

Life on board

Having never sailed with American Cruise Lines, every experience was new. The chef aboard during our sailing kept us satisfied. In fact, we couldn’t recall any meal that we found average. Each dish we tried from the menu — fish, meat, and vegetarian options — more than satisfied us. The tastiness, the local ingredients, and the presentation exceeded our expectations.

Lunch and dinner included a daily selection of beer and wine. Our attentive server remembered our beverage choices, adding to our overall dining experience. Meals take place over certain hours, but there are no designated tables or reserved times. For us, that is an ideal situation.

As a non-buffet person, I enjoyed the sit-down service on Glory. Crew members perform more than one duty on the boat. Even the hotel manager joined in assisting with serving. That impressed us, as did the commitment to service and hospitality by the crew.

On days that we returned outside of normal dining hours at the main restaurant, we headed to the Lookout Café grabbing something from the typical grill menu. Burgers, hot dogs, pizza and other fast foods were some of the items on the menu. Sitting on the aft deck and enjoying the fresh air became a favorite lunch activity. Breakfast items from the café, along with snacks in the Sky Lounge just inside, provide sustenance and refreshments for late sleepers and snackers.

Nightly entertainment drew many passengers to enjoy performances by local artists.

Odds and Ends

As is often the case with smaller ships and bigger prices, the majority of the passengers fall into an older demographic. Many are loyal guests, who try different American Cruise Lines itineraries and new ships like the coastal cats. Coastal cruising like this does differ from both river and ocean cruising. The American Glory follows the warm weather, cruising from the Northeast to the Southeast with a focus on historic waterways.

As a person with vision loss and impairments associated with it, I found American Glory ideal for mobile accessibility. Elevators took me to all decks with ease. More importantly, this boat had very few thresholds in the passenger areas. The amazing crew assisted guests with mastering the gangway and safely leaving or returning back on board.

Did America Glory live up to American Cruise Lines motto of “Small Ship Cruising Done Perfectly”? The answer for us is a resounding “Yes!”

48 Hours in Rio de Janeiro

by Steve Leland April 21, 2025
written by Steve Leland

Prior to embarking Oceania’s Marina for a 16-day trans-Atlantic cruise, we sated our wanderlust with 48 hours in Rio de Janeiro. I’d done precursory research on the Marvelous City and fitting in the unmissable sights proved to be easy.

Shortly after checking in at our hotel on Copacabana Beach, we were off to visit the impressive Christ the Redeemer monument, one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. The massive outstretched arms of this iconic symbol of Rio embrace a panoramic view of the city from the summit of Corcovado Mountain.

Next to Christ the Redeemer, another quintessential attraction is Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açucar). Although it can seem like an amusement park atop a mountain, taking the cable car up to its summit is something extra special.

The Girls From Ipanema

Yes, they’re tall and tan and young and lovely, but the Ipanema neighborhood is more than bronzed beauties on the expansive golden sands of the beach. It’s here where we met up with local musician Gui to explore the street music synonymous with Brazil.  Samba music thrives as a universal language here … and you can blame it on the bossa nova … but the musical heritage of the city takes center stage throughout this three-hour walking tour with riobossaexperience.com.br

Bossarioexperience.com | Photo: Steve Leland

We explored the roots of this music from the early days of slavery through the modern era of samba composers. We walked through the streets that were home to artists like Carmen Miranda, João Gilberto (the father of bossa nova), and Antônio Carlos Jobim, with Gui strumming and singing the songs that made them, and the Ipanema neighborhood, famous the world over.

A Tasting Journey

Tastings in Rio | Photo: Steve Leland

After a brief dip in the rooftop pool of the Rio Othon Palace Hotel, we are off for an evening of culinary enlightenment with cookinrio.com. If you follow my travel posts, you’ll know that I’m more of a foodie than a frolicker, so a night of tickling the tastebuds trumps a night at a nightclub. Erika, one of the organization’s culinary experts, guided us through a journey of 33 tropical fruits, vegetables, candies, and dishes that are synonymous with Brazil.

It was an unforgettable experience that finished at a local bar with a caipirinha, a local cocktail made with cachaça, sugar, lime, and ice. A lively samba band on stage made the night a very special adventure.  The only regret we had was that our time in Rio was too short, as Cookinrio does a fantastic cooking class that will be a must on our next visit.

Beyond the City

Boarding Marina the next day put an end to our stay in Rio, but for the next four days we cruised up the coast to a foursome of Brazilian coastal cities. The charm of Buzios was reminiscent of a Caribbean village with shops and cafes straddling its golden sand beachfront. A walking tour through the Upper Town of Salvador revealed Brazil’s African heritage with colorful architecture and animated street life. A catamaran tour through the lagoons of Maceio was an opportunity to visit isolated beaches. And before we began our four-day crossing of  the Atlantic, we made one final stop in the metropolitan area of Recife, offering a glimpse of its historical Dutch influence.

A visit to Brazil had always been on our bucket list. Finally, we were able to take in its vibrant energy, diverse culture, and delicious cuisine. The special kaleidoscope of experiences was just the start of the fabulous cruise adventure aboard Oceania’s Marina.
