New Mediterranean Restaurant Azure Launches on Seven Seas Prestige

by Porthole Cruise and Travel May 14, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Regent Seven Seas Cruises has unveiled renderings of the seven specialty restaurants aboard Seven Seas Prestige, including a new Mediterranean concept, Azure.

Azure introduces a mezze-style dining experience inspired by Mediterranean flavors from Morocco, Spain, Italy, Greece, Israel, and Lebanon. The design by Studio DADO reflects the region’s heritage with warm colors, rustic textures, arabesque mosaics, and a chandelier inspired by olive trees.

“Cuisine has always been at the heart of the Regent experience, and with Seven Seas Prestige, we are taking our commitment to Epicurean Perfection to an entirely new level,” said Jason Montague, chief luxury officer for Regent Seven Seas Cruises. “Our talented chefs, sommeliers, mixologists, baristas, waiters, and servers, work tirelessly to craft a culinary journey that is truly Unrivaled at Sea. I’m especially excited to reveal Azure—an innovative and exciting new dining experience that will bring fresh flavors and a bold new concept for Regent guests to enjoy.”

RELATED: Regent Seven Seas Cruises Launches “Sale Into Summer

Seven Seas Prestige will feature 11 included dining experiences, including these seven specialty restaurants:

Compass Rose

Inspired by celestial navigation, Studio DADO designed Compass Rose with mirrored entry screens, organic textures, and ocean-inspired lighting to evoke the spirit of exploration.

Prime 7

Designed by AD Associates, Prime 7 channels Chicago’s industrial past with warm umber tones, an Arctic Henna marble bar, and Art Deco influences.

“Prime 7 is not just a destination; it’s a dialogue between past and present, steel and velvet, fire and finesse,” said Nicola Preece, Design Director, AD Associates.

Chartreuse

A French venue designed as a modern take on a 20th-century society home, with garden-inspired colors, Black Marquina and Calacatta Oro marble, and lush furnishings.

“Chartreuse is where a moment is suspended in time. A return to grace,” said Preece.

Pacific Rim

Drawing from Japanese design principles, Pacific Rim blends natural elements with detailed craftsmanship. Guests enter through a sculptural archway and dine in a serene, wood-accented space with panoramic views.

“The design brings a serene, Zen-like atmosphere to the high seas,” said Ruiz.

La Veranda / Sette Mari at La Veranda

By day, La Veranda offers indoor and open-air buffet dining with ocean views. At night, it transforms into Sette Mari, serving à la carte Italian dishes.

Additional dining options include in-suite dining, casual fare at the Pool Grill, and the Coffee Connection café with made-to-order drinks, pastries, and snacks. All dining and beverages are included in the fare as part of Regent’s all-inclusive experience.

Menus for specialty restaurants will be released closer to the ship’s debut in December 2026.

“We wanted to capture a journey to the Levant, with its rich legacy of craftsmanship, ornamentation and the colors of the Mediterranean,” said Yohandel Ruiz, Founding Partner, Studio DADO. “It feels exotic but also comfortable and welcoming at the same time.”

A New Chapter for Regent

Seven Seas Prestige, launching in 2026, marks Regent’s first new ship class in a decade. At 77,000 tons with a capacity of 822 guests, it offers one of the highest space-per-guest ratios at sea. The ship introduces new suite categories and expanded public spaces, including the newly imagined Regent Suite.

As with all Regent voyages, fares include shore excursions, gourmet dining, premium drinks, Wi-Fi via Starlink, gratuities, valet laundry, and a pre-cruise hotel night for Concierge-level guests and above.

Guests can register their interest for Seven Seas Prestige’s inaugural season starting June 11, 2025, with reservations opening June 25 at RSSC.com/ships/seven_seas_prestige.

Margaritaville at Sea Acquires Third Ship, Costa Fortuna

by Julie Bouchner May 14, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

On its third anniversary, Margaritaville at Sea announced the acquisition of its third vessel, Costa Fortuna, currently operated by Costa Cruises. The ship will become the largest in the line’s fleet, marking another step in its fleet expansion strategy.

Since launching Margaritaville at Sea Paradise in May 2022, the cruise line has welcomed hundreds of thousands of guests. In 2024, it introduced its second ship, Margaritaville at Sea Islander, further developing its casual, island-inspired cruise experience. The line has earned accolades, including Cruise Critic’s #1 Cruisers’ Choice Award and Newsweek’s 2025 Best Ship for Families.

“Over the last three years we have been incredibly focused on building Margaritaville at Sea by delivering more of what our guests love – a uniquely laid-back island attitude with award-winning hospitality. With the acquisition of our third ship in three years, we are proud to once again invite guests to step into the Margaritaville state of mind on the open ocean,” said Christopher Ivy, Chief Executive Officer of Margaritaville at Sea. “The launch of the Margaritaville at Sea Islander was a significant moment for our company, and the acquisition of the Costa Fortuna, our largest ship to date, gives us another exciting opportunity to bring even more fun and escapism to guests from a new homeport in 2026.”

Originally built for Costa Cruises, Costa Fortuna is over 102,500 gross tons, accommodates approximately 3,450 passengers, and includes 1,340+ staterooms, 13 passenger decks, extensive outdoor areas, and a towering 8-story atrium. The ship will fully transform with Margaritaville’s signature design and reopen under the new brand in 2026.

John Cohlan, CEO of Margaritaville, added, “Margaritaville at Sea has been on an exceptional trajectory since its launch only a few short years ago. We’re thrilled to once again expand the experience of our brand on the water and share the cruise line’s signature experiences and amenities with even more guests.”

Costa Fortuna will remain under Costa Cruises’ operation until late 2026 before transitioning to Margaritaville at Sea.

by Julie Bouchner May 13, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

Victory II was christened in Chicago on May 12, 2025, marking the full return of Victory Cruise Lines!

Founder and CEO John Waggoner led the celebration weeks after his daughter christened sister ship Victory I in Toronto on April 27. Both 190-guest vessels were purpose-built for the Great Lakes, offering an alternative to river and ocean cruising.

The cruise line is the only one to dock at Chicago’s Navy Pier and will operate 33 sailings in 2025 that visit all five Great Lakes. Victory I and II will run 10–15-night itineraries from Chicago, Toronto, Milwaukee, and Montreal through October.

“There is no city in the world quite like Chicago, and we are delighted to celebrate here today at Navy Pier as Victory II joins Victory I in sailing the Great Lakes once again,” said John Waggoner. “We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who has made it possible for us to showcase all five Great Lakes and provide guests with the opportunity to create lasting travel memories together.”

About the Christening Ceremony

  • The ceremony took place onboard in the Compass Lounge, beginning with the national anthems of the U.S. and Canada.
  • Speakers included Jordan Engerman (Choose Chicago), Kate Fineske (National Museum of the Great Lakes), David William Kelly (COO), and Waggoner.
  • The event’s highlight was Waggoner’s granddaughter, Molly Applegate, who broke a bottle of Maker’s Mark bourbon on the bow to christen the ship, with the Chicago River and skyline in the background.

“Victory Cruise Lines will bring thousands of visitors to Chicago and we are proud the cruise line is docking right here downtown at Navy Pier,” said Engerman. “Cruise visitation supports local jobs and businesses across the city and is yet another way for travelers to explore our rich and diverse destination.”

About the Itinerary

The inaugural 10-night voyage between Chicago and Toronto includes a pre-cruise hotel stay. Ports of call include Escanaba, Mackinac Island, Sault Ste. Marie, Detroit, Cleveland, and Port Colborne (Niagara Falls). Guests enjoy included excursions such as the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Henry Ford Museum, and Soo Locks Maritime Heritage Tour. Each port offers flexible morning and afternoon options.

Onboard Dining and Enrichment

Dining options include three venues, notably the Tuscan Stone Grill—an interactive hot stone dinner concept created by COO David William Kelly and Dietmar Wertanzl of Anglo-Eastern Leisure. Located at the stern, it offers sweeping views of the Great Lakes.

LakeLorians, in partnership with the National Museum of the Great Lakes, lead onboard educational programming, including lectures and Q&As highlighting the region’s maritime history.

Rollin’ on the River

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine May 13, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Like many who try a multi-day bike trip for the first time, I felt both excited and intimidated by the idea of cycling for two or three hours a day. It didn’t help that I’d be pedaling solo in a foreign land (Germany), wouldn’t be riding an e-bike, and didn’t have a clue how to use GPS.

My concerns drifted away like the swans that clustered on the shore of the Mosel River villages on my six days of pedaling from Saarburg to Koblenz as I discovered the joys and practical advantages of following a river on two wheels. Like most rivers, the Mosel’s shoreline was flat, so I had no trouble averaging 22 miles a day with enough free time to stop often for photos, biergarten lunches, and sightseeing. By always hugging the river, it was impossible to get lost, even with no GPS. And the riverside parks, charming towns, and historical sites — some dating to Roman times — ensured the trip was never boring.

Since I completed that trip in 2013 (and three others since), bicycle tourism has boomed. Most cycling tour operators cite e-bikes as the leading trend driving this growth as it’s multiplied the number of travelers who can consider bicycle touring. Even the most casual cyclist can pedal for two or three hours a day for a week, the typical length of bike tours, on pedal-assisted e-bikes. E-bikes now account for the majority of guests of one-third of cycling tour operators.

Guided Land Trips

Guided bike tours, often alongside rivers, have been popular since Backroads introduced them to American travelers in 1980. Its most popular land-based river trip follows the Douro River through Spain and Portugal.

“While following a river on a bike, guests immerse themselves in the changing landscapes, from scenic countryside to vibrant cities,” says Jennifer Fox, a Backroads trip leader who has led its river cruises for a decade. “They’re an opportunity to connect with history, culture, and nature in a single journey.”

These trips are ideal for those who favor socializing, structure, and safety. Accommodations are typically three- or four-star hotels or inns, with most meals included. Guides (locals or knowledgeable staff such as Fox) tell you about historical sights en route, ensure you stay on course, and arrange a van ride if you tire out. Like other types of bike tours, there’s time during and after rides to explore cities and towns, castles and cathedrals, and museums and parks.

Self-Guided River Trips

Most of the trips offered by cycling tour operators in Europe are self-guided, and their popularity is growing. These trips are perfect for those who don’t feel they need guides, don’t like biking in a group, do like the hefty cost savings, or all three. They also allow more flexibility as you can pick and choose when and where to stop for lunch and which sights to visit or skip.

On a typical self-guided trip, you’re provided with rental bikes, helmets, locks, panniers (saddlebags), maps (physical and mobile-enabled), nightly inn reservations, and daily luggage transport between inns. You’re also given.…

Cool and Healthy

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine May 12, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Plunging into freezing lakes, meditating in snowy valleys and swimming outdoors in the heart of winter aren’t everyone’s cup of (iced) tea, but there’s a reason why “cold-immersion” holidays are one of the fastest-growing wellness vacation choices.

Starting with proven health benefits, cold immersion improves sleep, reduces stress and stimulates vagus nerve pathways.

Mentally, it pushes boundaries by teaching one to step out of the comfort zone and remain calm under pressure.

Cold-immersion vacations are now available in Norway, Japan, Canada, and other beautiful locales.

“I think it’s about craving something deeper,” says Gary Clark, Academy Director at SIA Austria. “an experience that challenges both body and mind.”

MSC Cruises Begins Countdown to First-Ever Sailing from Galveston

by Julie Bouchner May 8, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

MSC Cruises is six months away from launching its new homeport in Galveston. MSC Seascape will begin sailing from a new terminal at the Port of Galveston on November 9, with construction set to finish before the inaugural cruise.

The ship will offer 7-night Western Caribbean itineraries, departing Sundays and visiting Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico, and Isla de Roatan, Honduras. MSC Seascape will feature Texas-inspired elements alongside MSC’s signature European style and American amenities.

Lynn Torrent, President, MSC Cruises North America, said: “It seems like just yesterday we were announcing our intention to sail from Galveston, and now here we are six months out. We’ll be there before you know it! Our ‘Let’s Holiday’ campaign has vacationers and travel advisors across the country buzzing about our trademark mix of European style and American comfort, so it’s a great time to expand into a fantastic market like Galveston. MSC Seascape is the perfect ship for families, whether they’re riding Robotron and building LEGOs together, or just enjoying a beautiful day in the Caribbean on one of the countless open deck areas. Sailing from Galveston makes the experience even more accessible, and we can’t wait to reveal some Texas flourishes for MSC Seascape over the next six months.”

MSC Cruises’ expansion to Galveston strengthens its North American footprint, following the recent launch of MSC World America in Miami and ahead of its first Alaska cruises in 2026.

Rodger Rees, Galveston Wharves Port Director and CEO, said: “November will be a major milestone in the port’s 200-year history. We’ll open our fourth cruise terminal and welcome a new cruise partner. We’re honored that MSC Cruises chose Galveston as it expands its U.S. presence. Having MSC, the world’s third largest cruise line, homeporting in Galveston says a great deal about their confidence in the Port of Galveston and mid-America cruise market. This is also great news for our community, cruise guests and port partners. This beautiful new terminal will create jobs, spur economic growth for the region and offer an exciting new cruise choice for our market. MSC Cruises is a family-owned company that fits well into the family atmosphere in Galveston.”

MSC Cruises’ move into Galveston expands its U.S. footprint and makes its cruises more accessible to American travelers. The launch follows the debut of MSC World America in Miami and precedes the line’s first Alaska sailings in 2026.

I’m the Captain Now

by Kevin Revolinski May 8, 2025
written by Kevin Revolinski

The sun glints off the water, and a warm breeze blows through the cabin as we sail along the mighty Mississippi. Bluffs as tall as 400 feet rise above the distant banks on either side. Two bald eagles perch in the nearest tree. A flock of pelicans, gathered along the edge of a grassy sand flat, stare at me as I pass. Life on the river is like a dream. But then, two wake-the-dead horn blasts pull me from my reverie. Ahead is a large tugboat coming around the bend pushing 16 massive barges right in my direction, and I am reminded this is real. I calmly turn the chrome wheel in my hands to steer my 60-foot houseboat to the right and allow the barges to pass. Twenty-four hours previously, I had never driven so much as a fishing boat, and might have left out “calmly.” But now, I am the confident riverboat captain.

And the bartender, deckhand, cook, navigator, janitor, and guest. My wife Tip and I, along with two other couples, all take our turns. We booked this houseboat from S&S Boats in Lansing, Iowa, for the weekend. Despite none of us having boat experience, we are sailing on our own, and will spend our time cruising up and down the Mississippi where it flows through the unglaciated Driftless Area between Iowa and Wisconsin.

Taking the Wheel

The houseboat comes with a basic kitchen, fridge, dining and sitting area, and sleeping quarters for four couples. The upper deck has partial shade, deck chairs, an unstocked bar, and even a waterslide off the back. Boat control can be switched to a second helm up here as well.

Even though the company and boat were insured, I thought it was crazy that anyone would let a greenhorn like me navigate something so big on a river so powerful. On arrival at the dock, we all took part in a one-hour training session and then a bit of guided sailing with our instructor. We learned to steer, dock, and control the independent twin engines, as well as how to manage the electrical power and generator. We went over safety and emergency information, and how to use the radio to communicate. If we really got stuck, we could always call in the cavalry and they’d send someone on a fast boat. During our practice run, we ran the boat aground on a sand bar — on purpose: To picnic or stay overnight, we can plant two fluke anchors in the sand to keep us in place.

Obviously, the biggest rule is don’t run into anything. This is fairly simple as….

Expeditions for All

by John Roberts May 6, 2025
written by John Roberts

Expedition cruises have a well-earned reputation for being ruggedly exhilarating, with sailing adventures available on small ships to remote places like Antarctica, Alaska, the Arctic, the Galapagos, and remote islands in the South Pacific.

Historically, these trips required an elevated level of fitness or physical abilities. In recent decades, though, expedition ships are much more accommodating for leisure travelers, with stable vessels featuring modern comforts and luxurious amenities.

Ships from expedition lines such as Ponant, Lindblad Expeditions, Hurtigruten Expeditions, Silversea Expeditions, Seabourn, and Viking carry fewer than 400 passengers and offer spas, salons, specialty restaurants, spacious suites, pools, shops and theaters.

Overall, it’s way more comfortable. It’s delightful to have all of these creature comforts on your ship, of course, but an expedition cruise has always been about the destination. Some remote places can be a little bit intimidating, especially for aging cruisers who might be slowing down or facing mobility issues.

Viking’s expedition program puts any traveler’s dreams of adventure cruising well within reach, though. The line’s two 378-passenger expedition ships — Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris — are the most-accessible ways to experience a small-ship adventure cruise.

Cruisers of all ages and abilities can confidently dive into an expedition. Here are a few reasons why Viking offers an accessible experience:

A Well-Rounded Expedition Program

The team of expert expedition leaders showcase destinations such as Greenland, the Canadian Arctic, the Great Lakes, and Antarctica with exciting excursions and onboard educational talks and activities.

I cruised on Viking Octantis in Chile’s Patagonian fjords and was impressed with the variety of onboard activities that nicely complement time off the ship. This included talks in The Aula — the main theater — about whales, birds, and the fisheries of the region, as well as time in the ship’s Science Lab to discuss microplastics found in the ocean’s waters.

You can also find interesting documentary films on the daily program that are shown in The Aula. Guides give photography tips and lead bird- and whale-watching sessions on the outer decks. Viking has resident scientists and programming in partnership with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and University of Cambridge.

Octantis and Polaris are working science vessels conducting research in each destination, and cruisers can interact with the scientists and might even help.…

written by Julie Bouchner

To celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week (May 5–9, 2025), Norwegian Cruise Line is bringing back its annual Norwegian’s Giving Joy® program, which honors outstanding educators across the U.S. and Canada. This year, 20 teachers will be awarded a free cruise, and the top three will receive an exclusive invitation to the christening voyage of the new Norwegian Luna™ in spring 2026.

HOW TO ENTER

  • From May 5 through May 31, 2025, the public can nominate certified educators at www.nclgivingjoy.com by sharing stories about how these teachers inspire students, demonstrate dedication, and tackle challenges with creativity.
  • A panel of NCL leaders and partners will review submissions and select the winners based on these criteria.
  • Each of the top 20 teachers will receive a three- or four-day cruise for two. The top three scorers will be named Grand Prize winners and will set sail aboard Norwegian Luna during its christening voyage from Miami.

“At NCL we are all about delivering exceptional experiences, including honoring communities who make a difference in the world, such as teachers,” said David J. Herrera, President of Norwegian Cruise Line. “We’re so proud to celebrate six years of our Norwegian’s Giving Joy program and continuing to shine a light on incredible teachers who are shaping our future generation. This year, we’re excited to reward 20 exceptional teachers with an unforgettable vacation with MORE ways to relax and explore on board one of our many spectacular NCL ships.”

Since launching in 2019, Norwegian’s Giving Joy® has received nearly 61,000 nominations, awarded over 270 teachers with dream vacations, and donated more than $515,000 to educators and their schools, thanks to support from NCL’s valued partners.

This year’s Grand Prize winners will be among the first to experience Norwegian Luna™, the sister ship to Norwegian Aqua™, featuring cutting-edge attractions like the Aqua Slidecoaster—a hybrid roller coaster and waterslide—as well as new dining concepts including Sukhothai, a Thai specialty restaurant, and Planterie, a plant-based eatery in the Indulge Food Hall.

Starting in April 2026, Norwegian Luna will offer seven-day Eastern Caribbean cruises from Miami, with stops in Puerto Plata (Dominican Republic), Tortola (British Virgin Islands), St. Thomas (U.S. Virgin Islands), and Great Stirrup Cay—NCL’s private island in the Bahamas, which will unveil a new pier, expanded pool area, kids’ splash zone, and more by late 2025.

“Travel opportunities bring excitement, relaxation, and rejuvenation into the lives of so many,” said Nancy Altimore, 2024 Norwegian’s Giving Joy winner and educator from Pembroke Pines Charter High School in Pembroke Pines, Fla. “The NCL family, through its Giving Joy Program, celebrates educators and provides them with an incredible opportunity to travel. It was such a joy to be a Norwegian’s Giving Joy winner and experience a pampered celebration for doing something I love – teaching! It was truly an honor to participate in this caring opportunity and experience a vacation with NCL.”

To nominate an educator by May 31, 2025, or to view full contest details, visit www.nclgivingjoy.com. In addition to the Giving Joy program, NCL supports educators year-round with its Teacher Cruise Discount. Verified PreK–12 teachers, school staff, and college professors in the U.S. and Canada are eligible for a 5% cruise fare discount and a $50 onboard credit.
