Carnival Enhances Loyalty Program for Diamond and Platinum Guests

by Julie Bouchner September 15, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

Carnival Cruise Line is raising the bar for loyal guests with exciting updates to its new Carnival Rewards™ program, set to launch June 1, 2026. The enhancements are designed to celebrate and reward the line’s most dedicated travelers — those who have already reached Diamond and Platinum status, as well as those who achieve these tiers before the program’s debut.

“We are so excited about our new Carnival Rewards™ loyalty program launching next year, and believe it will drive fantastic engagement with, and rewards for, our guests. At the same time, we greatly appreciate the loyalty of our passionate guests and the years of dedication many have exhibited in order to achieve higher tiered loyalty status with Carnival Cruise Line. We’ve spent the summer talking with our guests, listening to their comments, and taking in their feedback. As a result, I am happy to share that we are making changes to improve the offering to our most loyal customers as we get ready for the program’s launch in 2026,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “We believe these enhancements recognize our appreciation for the loyalty of our top-tier guests.”

Key Program Updates:

  • Diamond Status: Guests who reach Diamond in the current VIFP Club® by May 31, 2026, will keep Diamond through May 31, 2032, and also earn lifetime Diamond status in the new Carnival Rewards™ program.
  • Platinum Status: Guests who reach Platinum by May 31, 2026, will keep Platinum through May 31, 2028, and receive a 10,000-star boost every two years starting June 1, 2026. This provides a 20% head start toward Platinum or Diamond in future cycles and guarantees at least Gold status.
  • Children’s Status: While minors cannot enroll directly, they will share the status of their parent/guardian for each sailing. Upon turning 18, those who qualified as Diamond or Platinum by May 31, 2026, can opt in to Carnival Rewards™ with full privileges.
  • International Guests: Carnival is exploring options for Canadian and Australian residents similar to the Carnival Rewards™ Mastercard available in the U.S.

The Scottish Surprise

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine September 11, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

In February this year, the Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland chose the city of Glasgow to host its award ceremony for the first time in its 125-year history. It was also the first time the GB awards were held outside England, so this was a massive vote of confidence in the city’s vibrant food scene.

Star struck

If you crave one-star Michelin fine dining, I suggest you head for Cail Bruich in the West End, run by executive chef Lorna McNee. Having previously worked at the two-Michelin-star Restaurant Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles Hotel, she produces well-balanced dishes that use the finest ingredients. The name Cail Bruich means “eat well” in Gaelic, something you can always expect to do here.

Then, head to foodie Finnieston, where Unalome serves up modern European dishes with a Japanese influence. It is run by head chef and owner Graeme Cheevers, who explains that the culinary scene in Glasgow has progressed a lot in the last 10 years. He says, “It’s dynamic, and I love having my restaurant here.”  He has recently opened a second restaurant on the banks of Loch Lomond, called Loma, at Cameron House Hotel.

Dram fine

No trip to Scotland is complete without whisky. To find a quality dram, take a tasting tour at The Clydeside Distillery. The distillery is owned by Tim Morrison, of Morrison Glasgow Distillers. He is the great-grandson of John Morrison, who back in the 19th century built the Queens’ Dock and Pump House on the River Clyde, where The Clydeside Distillery is now located.

However, if you prefer to experience a traditional Scottish whisky bar, visit the lively Pot Still Whisky Bar on Hope Street. It is run by the Murphy family, who take pride in offering everyone a warm welcome, and they stock more than 1,000 different whiskies to choose from.

Walk on the wild side

There are many culinary walking tours available, but Glasgow-born chef Steven Halcrow’s Scran & Patter Food Tour offers a true taste of the city’s food scene. He tells the history of the city through its popular dishes. He says, “I always preface every tour by explaining this is not the most refined food you’re ever going to eat in your life, but it’s all good. I show very local, authentic food in places where tourists wouldn’t think to go to.” The three-hour tour costs $115 (£85) including food, drink, and of course, his “banter.” He will introduce you to local delicacies like French fries with cheese and curry sauce, and deep-fried pizza!

Relaxed dining

This year also saw two new Bib Gourmand establishments announced: Margo, located on Miller Street, where head chef Robin Aitken serves stylish, simple, flavorsome dishes; and Gaga, a Scottish-Malaysian diner on Dumbarton Road, owned by Chef Julie Lin.

They now join the ranks of Celentano’s, an elegant Italian-inspired restaurant with rooms near the Cathedral; the South Asian-infused menu at Ka Pao, near the Botanic Gardens; and Ox and Finch, near Kelvingrove Park, famed for its seasonal small plates.

If you’re looking for slightly less formal foodie offerings, try the unpretentious Gloriosa, situated close to Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. Its head chef and owner, Rosie Healey, explains more about the city’s approach to.…

Holland America & RWS Global Bring The Verdon Fosse Legacy®

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 9, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Today, Holland America Line and RWS Global announced the debut of “Fosse and Verdon, The Duet That Changed Broadway,” a live musical and multimedia tribute to Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon. Developed with The Verdon Fosse Legacy®, this is the first international staging of their work at sea.

Set to premiere this November aboard Holland America Line’s Koningsdam, the production features musical numbers inspired by Fosse’s choreography, along with archival audio and video projected on a 270-degree screen. The show highlights the duo’s contributions from Broadway to film, including Damn Yankees, Sweet Charity, Cabaret, and Chicago. Choreography is reconstructed by The Verdon Fosse Legacy® and staged by Dylis Croman and Alyssa Epstein, accompanied by powerful vocals performing beloved songs from these shows.

“We are incredibly honored to partner with RWS Global to be the first to bring the indelible legacy of Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon to our guests,” said Joe Chantry, vice president of entertainment and enrichment for Holland America Line. “Guests have expressed a strong desire for more Broadway-style productions, and we couldn’t imagine a better way to deliver than by celebrating two legends of the performing arts. The renowned work of Fosse and Verdon has captivated audiences across stage, film and television, and we’re proud to offer this exclusive Holland America Line experience as part of our commitment to world-class entertainment.”

“The influence of Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon on the world of entertainment is unparalleled,” said Craig Laurie, chief creative officer at RWS Global. “Their artistic partnership transformed music and dance into a storytelling language that transcends stage and screen, with their influence still pulsing through live entertainment today. We’re thrilled to join forces with Holland America Line and The Verdon Fosse Legacy® to honor their iconic works and create a bold, unforgettable experience for audiences around the world.”

The production also marks a broader partnership between RWS Global and The Verdon Fosse Legacy®, granting RWS Global exclusive rights to produce original performances inspired by the duo. Holland America Line will hold exclusive cruise rights to these productions for the next five years, making it the sole provider of Fosse and Verdon’s work at sea.

“Kicking off this partnership with RWS Global by debuting ‘Fosse and Verdon, The Duet That Changed Broadway’ on Holland America Line is a powerful step in educating international audiences about the artistry of my parents, Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon,” said Nicole Fosse, founder and artistic director of The Verdon Fosse Legacy®. “RWS Global’s worldwide reach makes them a trusted partner in taking this legacy international. They understand the power in preserving the historical impact of my parents’ work and recognize that maintaining this legacy is about sharing and educating audiences, which is crucial for the future generations.”

Holland America Line’s 10+ year partnership with RWS Global has shaped the cruise line’s entertainment offerings. As RWS Global’s first cruise client, Holland America Line helped expand the company beyond theme parks into maritime entertainment. Together, they continue to deliver innovative productions that elevate the guest experience across the fleet.

As The Verdon Fosse Legacy® and RWS Global collaborate further, additional live entertainment offerings will be unveiled, celebrating the enduring influence of Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon.

Brilliant Lady Arrives in New York

by Judi Cuervo September 9, 2025
written by Judi Cuervo

I’m strolling down Ninth Avenue in New York City, on my way to meet a Brilliant Lady.

I refer, of course, to Virgin Voyages’ Brilliant Lady, the newest in the line’s four-ship fleet, which arrived in New York last week for its “MerMaiden” voyage to Bermuda. The 17-deck ship was welcomed to the city by Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson along with the ship’s crew and guests who marked the occasion with a rousing rendition of Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now.”

The Very First Time

It has taken me eight years to find my way on to a Virgin Voyages ship but I clearly recall the promotional events that preceded the line’s launch. I remember talk of “rebellious twists,” a revolutionary overhaul of traditional cruise-ship dining, a tattoo parlor at sea, drag shows, and complimentary extras like fitness classes, Wi-Fi, gratuities, and basic beverages. And, with no children aboard, we could expect things to get slightly naughty — like an ice cream spot named Lick Me Til Ice Scream.

Now, as I stand at Pier 90 in New York and gaze up at the 110,000 grt ship, her gray bow calls to mind a battleship. But, okay, I should expect the unexpected from a line that, from the very start, was determined to avoid contracting any firm that routinely designed cruise ships.

NYC Ship Terminal | Phoot: Judi Cuervo

The Virgin Voyages difference is evident from the second I enter the terminal. Instead of the almost industrial surroundings I’m used to, I find an assortment of purple loveseats and end tables topped with floral arrangements. A red curtain hides the rather lackluster path to the gangway and a DJ is at her booth, popular songs blaring through speakers to remind us that we can trace Virgin Voyages back to Branson’s musical origins and artists like the Rolling Stones, the Sex Pistols, the Spice Girls, and more.

Sadly, I will not be aboard Brilliant Lady as she sails to Bermuda tomorrow and am here only to explore the ship for a few hours, enjoy some of its entertainment, and dine at the new Spanish-inspired restaurant Rojo.

Rojo-Jamon Croquettes | Photo: Judi Cuervo

It seems that most of my fellow sailors (are we considered “sailors” even if we’re simply visiting the ship for a few hours?) have sailed Virgin Voyages before. The point of this event is to showcase the differences in the purpose-built Brilliant Lady and her sister ships Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady, and Resilient Lady. The differences are inspired by Brilliant Lady’s upcoming itineraries that will include breathtaking scenery, cold weather, and navigation of the Panama Canal. As a Virgin virgin, I find myself a little lost when it comes to design changes yet absorb my tour guide’s passionate rap and decide I’ll ignore that whole “changes” thing.

Shiny and New

Brilliant Lady is narrower than her sisters, an adjustment required for her to pass through the Panama Canal en route to the Pacific. Lifeboats had to be brought in which resulted in the creation of a new category of accommodations: The (Slightly) Smaller Balcony Sea Terrace. And while this move reduces the size of balconies in the category from 40 feet to between 9 and 11 feet, sailors are compensated with not one, but two signature red hammocks to relax in — something that only the largest suites had offered.

Like other Virgin Voyages ships, the social heart of Brilliant Lady is The Roundabout, an open and functional two-level space connected by a dramatic staircase. Cozy seating in a riot of reds and purples invites conversation while the nearby Draught House offers libations that range from cocktails, beers, wines, and—new for cold-weather destinations–coffees. This space, I’m told, has been “reimagined,” with windows that allow sailors to view the stunning vistas along the Alaskan and Canadian coasts. In fact, all throughout the ship, viewing lines and outdoor spaces have been expanded, including those at the ship’s Athletic Club. And, aboard Brilliant Lady, the traditionally outdoor Scarlet Night party becomes the Scarlet Night Red Room Glow Up to offer a high-energy indoor option for chilly nights.

Duel Reality | Photo: Judi Cuervo

A few hours is not nearly enough to absorb the magnificence of Brilliant Lady but I try my best, joining my little group as they view two of the most extravagant suites on the ship: the Massive Suite and the Posh Suite, plush terry robes embroidered with “Rock Star” hanging outside the lavish bathrooms, a collection of guitars lining the wall of the Massive Suite and a vinyl record player with a stack of LPs in the living area. I stroll the pulsing casino, am dazzled by the electrifying entry to The Manor Room, and window-shop the ship’s expansive, 5,500-square-foot retail space, salivating over the fashion, beauty, and fine jewelry options. At 6:15 p.m., I attend Duel Reality, a signature Virgin Voyages production that I find to be a rather bizarre acrobatic combination of a love story, schoolyard brawl, and urban Cirque du Soleil. I prefer the jazz trio that’s tucked into a corner near The Roundabout.

Feel Your Heartbeat

While a tattoo parlor, drag show and risque signage might set Brilliant Lady apart from the traditional cruise ship, Virgin Voyages has triggered a true revolution in dining! You won’t find a main restaurant aboard Brilliant Lady but, instead, 20 complimentary dining venues (some requiring reservations) that range from the casual Pizza Place to the more extravagant steak and seafood spot, The Wake. And instead of a tired buffet, Brilliant Lady offers The Galley, an all-day dining spot with a variety of stations serving up delectable dishes … à la minute. That’s right! All of the dining aboard Brilliant Lady is cooked to order, rather than in mass quantities.

Oddly, Brilliant Lady doesn’t offer any “drinks packages,” but does offer something better: The Bar Tab. Pre-purchase your Bar Tab and you’ll receive additional credit free of charge. Unlike most ships’ beverage-package schemes, there’s no need for your travel companion to purchase a Bar Tab and your tab may be used to buy others a drink as well.

On this brilliant evening, it seems as though Brilliant Lady just may have saved the best for last: a lavish, Spanish-inspired dinner at Rojo by Razzle Dazzle, Virgin Voyages’ newest dining concept. In a relaxed setting of neutral tones and polished woods, we share delectable small plates like crispy jamon croquettes with their silky and cheesy interior, tender grilled octopus, and roasted cauliflower Catalan before indulging in our choice of mains like tender baby back pork ribs in harissa honey, arctic char, or a superb grilled ribeye served alongside chorizo piperade. All accompanied by a delightful rioja wine, of course. For dessert, I choose chocolate-dipped churros. Olé!

During my short time aboard Virgin Voyages’ newest ship, I might not have had an opportunity to experience all of its magical features, its dazzling public spaces, or its vast entertainment offerings but the little I did see is more than enough to convince me that this is certainly one Brilliant Lady.

A panel of industry leaders selected the winners: Mandy Goddard of Cruise by Mandy, Sara Harsh of The Coca-Cola Company, and Katty Byrd of Norwegian Cruise Line. Nominations were judged on impact, peer recognition, and creativity in overcoming challenges.

Since launching in 2019, Norwegian’s Giving Joy has received nearly 62,000 nominations, awarded close to 300 educators, and donated over $550,000 to teachers and schools.

In addition, NCL offers year-round support for educators through its Teacher Cruise Discount, which provides verified teachers and school staff across the U.S. and Canada with 5% off any voyage plus a $50 onboard credit.

Beginning April 2026, Norwegian Luna will sail seven-day Eastern Caribbean itineraries from Miami to Puerto Plata, Tortola, St. Thomas, and Great Stirrup Cay, which will debut major new features, including a pier, welcome center, and the six-acre Great Tides Waterpark with 19 slides, a river, cliff jumps, and more.

White Sand, Green Vision

by JIll Weinlein September 8, 2025
written by JIll Weinlein

This small Bahamian island offering soft, powdery white sand no more than 65 miles off the coast of Miami started its life as an excavation site in the 1960s. Leased by Dillingham Construction, the island was dredged and exploited for that sand, made of a mineral known as aragonite, a component of pearls and coral. This precious sand was collected and barged over to Florida to help build up the Sunshine State’s pretty beaches and to make concrete and glass.

Ground Zero

In 2015, Pierfrancesco Vago, MSC Cruises’ executive chairman, signed a long-term lease with the Bahamian government to transform the man-made island. He committed significant funds to rebuild the island’s rich ecosystem in the Bimini Islands region, and to create a fun private-island experience for MSC passengers. He named it Ocean Cay.

First, he had 1,500 tons of metal pieces and debris left over by the construction company removed. Next, he had 125,000 tons of rock delivered to make the island a beautiful MSC port-of-call and marine sanctuary. Thousands of trees and indigenous plants were planted to recreate a Bahamian island’s native habitat.

Construction workers lived on a floating hotel-style vessel moored offshore until housing structures were built. They built colorful, sustainable apartment units designed to withstand sun, salt, and hurricanes.

Located in the center of the island, these low-rise buildings feature energy-efficient windows and insulation, LED lighting, water-saving fixtures, and corrosion-resistant materials. The units can accommodate up to 280 full-time employees, ensuring that the staff are available to open the island before an MSC cruise ship arrives.

They built a robust recycling system and advanced wastewater treatment designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero. There is also a cafeteria providing three meals a day, plus a laundry room, gym, resident doctor, and a staff shop.

Next, they created the MSC Foundation to oversee marine conservation, humanitarian aid, and sustainable development worldwide, and built the MSC Marine Conservation Center, reserving some of the housing units for reef-conservation workers and university students.

“The opening of our Marine Conservation Center marks a defining moment in our multigenerational commitment to ocean conservation,” says Vago, who also serves as chair of the MSC Foundation Executive Committee. “It brings to life the MSC Foundation’s concrete .…

by Julie Bouchner September 8, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

Virgin Voyages debuted its newest ship, Brilliant Lady, this week at Pier 90 in New York City, welcoming more than 4,000 guests onboard. The event marked the cruise line’s official entry into the Northeast market.

Highlights included Scarlet Night, live performances, and previews of new dining concepts and spaces. Sir Richard Branson joined celebrities, athletes, influencers, media, and Virgin Voyages fans to celebrate the brand’s recognition as the World’s No. 1 Cruise Line for three consecutive years.

“This ship feels like a boutique hotel at sea,” said a guest from New Jersey. “The design is stunning, the food was incredible—especially the new Spanish restaurant—and you can feel the energy everywhere you go.”

The debut also introduced new entertainment, with productions, interactive performances, Champagne bars, outdoor lounges, and theater spaces reflecting the line’s adults-only atmosphere.

“It was a fabulous event. What really struck me was the modern design throughout the ship,” said Amy Brightfield, Features Director at Better Homes & Gardens. “From chic bars with mid-century furniture to stylish outdoor decks by the pools, the spaces felt upscale with a Mad Men-meets-Miami vibe.”

TUI Cruises Sails Toward a Sustainable Future

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine September 4, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Leading ship-builder Fincantieri has just launched another state-of-the-art vessel for TUI Cruises.

The Mein Schiff Flow is the second of two next-generation ships built for the partnership between TUI AG and Royal Caribbean Cruises. The first, Mein Schiff Relax, was delivered in February.

Flow is equipped with cutting-edge environmental technologies including a “future-proof” design that allows it to run on low-emission fuels — an important milestone in the advance toward climate-neutral cruising. The InTUItion class is designed for dual-fuel operation, switching between both LNG (liquefied natural gas) and MGO (marine gas oil).

The ship will enter service in mid-2026.

by Julie Bouchner September 3, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

Royal Caribbean’s Legend of the Seas has reached a major construction milestone, touching water for the first time at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Turku, Finland. The ship will continue outfitting ahead of its debut in August 2026.

The process began with filling the dry dock over 12 hours, after which Legend moved to the outfitting dock—another step closer to welcoming guests.

As the third ship in the Icon Class, Legend will feature eight neighborhoods, including the Category 6 waterpark and Crown’s Edge, a combination skywalk, ropes course, and thrill ride. Guests can expect a mix of high-energy attractions, dining, relaxation, and new experiences still to be announced.

The ship will spend summer 2026 in Europe on 7-night Western Mediterranean itineraries before moving to the Caribbean in November with 6- and 8-night cruises, including stops at Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), Legend will be Royal Caribbean’s fourth LNG ship and will incorporate environmental innovations like waste heat recovery and shore power connection, advancing Royal Caribbean Group’s goal of a net-zero cruise ship by 2035.

More details will be announced soon on Royal Caribbean’s website.

Riviera Rose in Review

by Belinda Luksic September 3, 2025
written by Belinda Luksic

The locals will tell you Portugal is nine months of heaven and three months of hell. But aboard Riviera Rose, gliding through the Douro Valley, I can only think: If this is hell, then pass the sunscreen and top up my vinho verde.

With July temperatures hovering around 86 degrees F, the warm summer sun feels more like an invitation to unwind than something to escape. And the 124-passenger Riviera Rose — the latest ship from U.K.-based Riviera Travel — is perfectly designed for it. This sleek beauty is made for long, languid hours of sailing, sun-lounge siestas, breezy dips in the infinity-style pool and uninterrupted views of one of Europe’s more enchanting river valleys.

Thanks to the daytime-only sailing schedule, there is ample time on board to simply relax — glass in hand — while watching terraced vineyards and whitewashed villages unfold along the riverbanks. Slipping through narrow locks and past steep, vine-draped hillsides, the scenery is so strikingly composed, it often feels like we’re gliding through a film set.

A split-level beauty with hotel-like glamor

At first glance, the 260-foot Riviera Rose doesn’t look all that different from other ships on the Douro. But step aboard and the contrast is immediate. A clever split-level design floods the interiors with light and gives the space a relaxed, open feel more typical of a boutique hotel than a river vessel.

At the bow, a bar and restaurant are linked by a sweeping staircase. At the stern, an atrium lounge opens onto 12-foot windows that frame the Douro in cinematic detail. Just beyond, a small outdoor terrace offers one of the ship’s loveliest corners — a quiet perch to catch the breeze and watch the valley’s terraced vineyards slip away.

Rio | Photo: Riviera Travel

Upstairs on the mezzanine is Rio, the ship’s Portuguese specialty restaurant, and rustic dishes that bring Portugal’s soul to the table. Our evening here began with a generous antipasto spread — whole shrimp, shucked local oysters, marinated mussels, sardines, smoked meats, salads and cheeses — followed by à la carte plates like shrimp stew, bacalao (salted cod), and seared beef entrecôte. The main dining room is just as elegant, with an à la carte menu that travels the globe. Vegetarians are well-catered for too.

Up on the sundeck, the mood is just as chic. Sun loungers circle an infinity-style pool and the bar pours complimentary drinks — beer, wine, mixed cocktails, and a cocktail of the day — from 6 p.m. until midnight (with all-day service planned for 2026). A Portuguese barbecue seafood lunch was served here on our sail away from Porto.

Upper Deck Forward Stateroom | Photo: Riviera Travel

Cabins are generous by Douro standards. My 172-square-foot deluxe stateroom had a French balcony, flatscreen TV with free movies, a Nespresso machine and kettle, and a marble-accented bathroom with rainfall shower and Damana products from France. The only thing missing? USB ports — a small oversight in an otherwise thoughtful design.

Immersive excursions along the Douro

Peso da Régua | Photo:
Belinda Luksic

Over 125 navigable miles, Riviera Rose delivers more than just stunning scenery. Our 8-day Highlights of the Douro & Salamanca cruise offered an intimate window into northern Portugal life.

Each day brought a new port and an included guided excursion. In Peso da Régua, we sipped port and wine at a sixth-generation vineyard where traditions run deep. In Lamego, a scenic drive ended at its hilltop shrine, with the option to descend (and in my case, climb back up) all 686 steps of its baroque staircase lined with azulejo tiles depicting Mary’s ascension.

Across the border in Spain, a full-day excursion to Salamanca revealed its gothic spires, layered history, and sun-drenched plazas. Over tapas, we watched flamenco dancers strut, prance, and pound the floors. With time to spare, three of us paid the four-euro entry to climb Ieronimus Tower and were rewarded with sweeping views of rooftops, cathedral spires, and rolling countryside. In Porto, some went to Portugal’s birthplace, Guimaraes, while others like me visited the old wine ports on the waterfront.

Onboard entertainment struck the right note, with trivia nights, casual lectures, piano music at cocktail hour, and, while docked in Regua, a soulful fado performance at sunset. And of course, cruising through the river’s six locks — feats of engineering that once tamed the wild waters carrying port to England — added its own sense of history in motion.

Riviera’s US debut

Riviera Travel may not yet be a household name for American cruisers, but it’s been a quiet favorite in the U.K. and Europe for years, known for upscale, all-inclusive river cruises at refreshingly affordable prices. Now with the launch of Riviera Rose and the debut of its U.S. website, the company is officially making its move stateside.

Notable are the 55 dedicated solo sailings in Europe with no single supplement and itineraries that linger longer in port — two nights in Porto on my sailing — with options to add pre- or post-cruise stays. Plus, themed cruises covering the gamut of music, food, art, and wine.

If my week-long sailing is any indication, Riviera Travel has arrived with confidence. The ship’s contemporary design is a game-changer, the Portuguese crew attentive and days the perfect balance of downtime and exploration. And then there’s the Douro itself, surely one of Europe’s most spectacular waterways, best viewed on the sundeck with a chilled Portuguese wine in hand.

Riviera Rose Specs

  • Entered Service – 2025

Salalah Blooms

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine September 2, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

While most of the Middle East sizzles under the sun, a metamorphosis takes place each year in one little-known location. Here, dry desert scenery quietly transforms into a cool, misty landscape of rolling green hills covered with coconut groves, wildflowers and waterfalls. No, it’s not magic. It’s the khareef season in the Dhofar region of Oman. Travel deep inside this southernmost part of the country, and you’ll discover the enchanting little city of Salalah. The khareef, or monsoon season, occurs from late June through late September. Its relatively mild temperatures combined with light rain attract people from around the region seeking cool relief. With the khareef’s dramatic change of landscape from desert to greenery, Salalah and its environs “is a completely different country” says tour guide Ali Al-Mashani. “It’s like Europe.”

Outside and inside

Salalah lies on the coast of the Arabian Sea, where dolphins leap out of turquoise waters. This exotic destination is perhaps the Middle East’s very best place to spend time outside. Camel riding, horseback riding, hiking, and dune bashing are much more enjoyable experiences in the cooler khareef weather. Salalah is full of pristine beaches as well, like Al Fizayah with its rugged mountain backdrop and Al Haffa with its white sands and coconut palms. Near the popular Al Mughsayl Beach, natural rock formations have created Marneef Cave, where seawater shoots upward through blowholes like mini-geysers.

“Salalah is a dream escape for everyone who loves nature,” Ali says. “There is a rich cultural heritage here, where every corner tells a story of timeless beauty.”

Salalah also is home to impressive indoor experiences. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is a stunning building, elegant and refined just like the Omani people, with intricate architecture and hushed ambience. A look into Omani life can be found at Al Husn Souq, also known as Haffa Souq. Here, you can buy traditional Omani clothing as well as scarves, jewelry, and other pieces of local life.

The Frankincense Museum, Salalah’s only museum, showcases the region’s role in this fragrant trade. This part of the world is one of the few in which frankincense trees grow. Frankincense is such an important part of the Dhofar region that UNESCO has designated four sites in and around Salalah as the official Land of Frankincense. This rare incense is sold in Salalah’s souqs, along with colorful frankincense burners so you can enjoy its spicy scent.

Just down the road

Venture outside Salalah for more awe-inspiring sights while still enjoying the desert jungle. Job, the long-suffering man featured in the Bible book bearing his name, is buried nearby. You can find his grave inside a little building on a mountain called .…
