written by Julie Bouchner

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is now accepting Winter 2026–2027 Caribbean bookings aboard Ilma. From November 2026 to April 2027, the yacht will sail more than 20 itineraries, ranging from three to seven nights, exploring island harbors and tropical coastlines. New three- and four-night escapes allow travelers to experience the Caribbean with spacious suites, world-class dining, and personalized service.

“The winter season is a meaningful time for travel, when many guests want to celebrate the holidays or escape to warmer shores,” said Ernesto Fara, President of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. “Our 2026–2027 Caribbean voyages aboard Ilma offer the flexibility to design a journey suited to the occasion, with departures from Miami and San Juan providing an immersive way to experience this extraordinary region.”

Celebrate the Holidays at Sea

Holiday sailings include a seven-night Thanksgiving voyage from Miami to San Juan with festive onboard activities. Round-trip San Juan departures feature seasonal celebrations and island visits. Guests can welcome 2027 at Sandy Lane Yacht Club in St. Vincent & the Grenadines or enjoy a Valentine’s getaway on secluded beaches.

Curated Shore Excursions

Shore excursions bring guests closer to each destination. Snorkel with sea turtles in St. John, explore Virgin Gorda’s Baths, or fly over St. Lucia’s Pitons. Guests can also enjoy cooking classes in Antigua or scuba adventures in St. Barth, combining adventure with luxury.

Inside Casa Polanco: A Boutique Hotel Blending Luxury and Art

by Bill Panoff August 26, 2025
written by Bill Panoff

Normally when I’m in Mexico City, I check into one of the big hotels. But this time, I switched it up and stayed at a boutique property in Polanco—and it was a game-changer. The attention to detail, the incredible service, and the location right in the heart of this walkable neighborhood—surrounded by some of the city’s best restaurants and shops—made the experience unforgettable. If you’re planning a trip to Mexico City, I can’t recommend this hotel enough.

Casa Polanco, a boutique hotel in Polanco, combines a restored 1940s neocolonial house with a contemporary tower designed by architect Claudio Gantous..

The hotel features 19 uniquely designed rooms and suites that balance history and modernity, filled with natural light and offering a blend of elegance and comfort. Rooms include fine walnut floors, custom furniture, and Egyptian cotton linens, creating a luxurious and welcoming atmosphere.

Located near Avenida Presidente Masaryk, Paseo de la Reforma, shops, galleries, cafés, and restaurants, Casa Polanco provides convenient access to Mexico City’s cultural and entertainment highlights.

In April 2025, Casa Polanco opened its permanent art exhibition. Curated by Santiago Toca, it features original works by contemporary Mexican artists such as Graciela Iturbide, Ricardo Mazal, and Jordi Boldó, alongside select international pieces like Robert Polidori’s photograph of Havana. The exhibition is part of Casa Collective, a program offering guests access to private collections, independent art spaces, and architectural landmarks.

Star-Worthy Cocktails on the New Star of the Seas

by JIll Weinlein August 26, 2025
written by JIll Weinlein

Onboard Royal Caribbean’s new Star of the Seas, guests can explore over 20 bars and lounges, offering a wide range of cocktails and mocktails in vibrant settings. Some are along the Royal Promenade, while others are poolside or located within high-energy music, comedy, and dance clubs.

I spoke with Ed Eiswirth, Senior Director of Beverage Operations at Royal Caribbean Cruises, during the inaugural cruise and learned that the ship features nine new cocktails and several new mocktails across its menus.

The elegant Lincoln Park Supper Club showcases one of the newest cocktail programs. “It’s a multi-course meal paying homage to Chicago’s supper clubs,” said Eiswirth. “Guests enjoy a 10-course menu paired with six cocktails, accompanied by live jazz that enhances the atmosphere.”

Cocktail names honor Chicago, such as the Mickey Finn, made with Jameson Irish Whiskey, small-batch Black Infusions black fig liqueur, and chicory pecan bitters.

At the Dueling Pianos lounge, bartenders serve the bright-red Snap, Crackle, Pop! cocktail, made with Beefeater London Dry gin, lime juice, simple syrup, grenadine, and pineapple juice. A bag of Pop Rocks garnishes the drink, creating a playful, popping effect.

The 1400 Lobby Bar celebrates Royal Caribbean’s pioneering spirit. “Inspired by the lobby’s enormous ‘Pearl’ structure, the tequila-based Fourteen Hundred shimmers like a pearl,” Eiswirth explained. A large translucent bubble crowns the cocktail, releasing smoke when it pops.

Rye & Bean at the AquaDome serves coffee and tea during the day and transforms into a hotspot for Espresso Martinis, Coffee Mai-Tais, and non-alcoholic Espresso ‘No-tinis’ at night.

At Desserted Milkshake Bar in Thrill Island, Instagram-worthy milkshakes are crafted with flair. “Kids love the toppings, and we can turn them into adult shakes with a shot of vanilla vodka,” said Eiswirth.

Old-Fashioneds get a whimsical twist with the Marshmallow Old-Fashioned at the Schooner Bar.

Little sailors aren’t left out. The Blue Raspberry Ocean combines house-made lemonade, blue raspberry syrup, and Swedish Fish, served inside a clear bag with a straw.

Eiswirth also explained the beverage packages: “We offer non-alcoholic and alcoholic packages ranging from $70 to $105 per day. Guests can enjoy any cocktail under $14, and pay only the difference if it’s more.” About 78% of guests opt for drink packages on shorter weekend cruises, which attract a younger, party-seeking demographic.

The Star of the Seas sails from Port Canaveral, Florida, on seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries, with a stop at Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas.

PONANT Announces 12-Night North Pole Expeditions

by Julie Bouchner August 25, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

Ponant Explorations is offering 12-night North Pole voyages in 2027 aboard Le Commandant Charcot. These shorter itineraries deliver the full polar experience and complement the line’s longer North Pole cruises, made possible by the world’s only luxury icebreaker.

Sailing roundtrip from Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen, on July 27, August 8, August 20, and September 1, 2027, guests will reach 90° North, the northernmost point on Earth.

“Unique among polar expeditions, this journey to the Geographic North Pole offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience the Arctic as few ever have. Over the past 15 months, we’ve worked closely with our deployment team to thoughtfully design a 12-night itinerary that will appeal to this market,” said Samuel Chamberlain, CEO of PONANT EXPLORATIONS GROUP, Americas.

North Pole Expeditions Overview

Departing from Longyearbyen, the ship sails Spitsbergen’s icy coasts before navigating the drifting Arctic ice to the Geographic North Pole. Along the way, guests may see polar bears, seals, whales, and Arctic foxes before stepping onto the northernmost point on Earth.

Exploration Highlights:

  • Reach 90° North, the permanently ice-covered, sunlit, and highly inaccessible northernmost point on the planet.

  • Witness dramatic Arctic landscapes, including glaciers, ice ridges, and Svalbard’s fjords and peaks.

  • Observe rare wildlife: polar bears, whales, seals, seabirds, and Arctic foxes.

  • Take part in Zodiac outings, kayaking, ice landings, snowshoeing, and the Arctic tradition of polar plunging.

  • Visit Ny-Ålesund, a historic research outpost, and sail Spitsbergen’s wild northwest coast.

  • Experience the Arctic’s midnight sun and, conditions permitting, the Northern Lights.

All expeditions include round-trip airfare from Paris to Longyearbyen, transfers, and PONANT’s signature all-inclusive luxury, combining French savoir-faire with a spirit of exploration.

“With Le Commandant Charcot, we’ve created a ship that not only pushes the boundaries of polar navigation but also serves as a platform for scientific research, environmental stewardship, and cultural exchange. Coupled with our French flair for hospitality, this is purposeful exploration at its finest—providing today’s time-strapped travelers with the rare opportunity for transformative discovery.”

Holland America Line Recycles Ship Carpet into Souvenir Coasters

by Julie Bouchner August 20, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

Holland America Line now offers guests a set of four coasters made from upcycled ship carpet!

Created with Danish carpet maker Dansk Wilton, these coasters are the cruise industry’s first recycled carpet product. Available exclusively in onboard shops, they reflect the brand’s commitment to reducing waste.

“This project reflects our ongoing journey toward more sustainable practices,” said My Nguyen, director of interior design at Holland America Line. “These coasters are a tangible example of how discarded resources can be given a second life in the very environment they came from. We are proud to be the first in the industry to partner with Dansk and innovate carpet waste into beautiful usable products that our guests can enjoy.”
Twelve thousand coasters have been made from 3,300 pounds of carpet waste collected during dry-dock projects on Oosterdam, Eurodam, and Nieuw Amsterdam over the past two years. Made from Dansk Wilton’s ReBond material—the same upcycled textile used in Holland America Line’s architectural signage—they show how circular design can turn waste into functional products.

RELATED: Holland America Line Enhances Onboard Entertainment

The coasters are part of Dansk’s Re:Shape program, which repurposes carpet waste into sustainable products. Future plans include notebooks, postcards, door signs, artwork, and other items for sale onboard.

The coasters will be available in fleetwide onboard shops by the end of October 2025, giving guests a unique memento while supporting sustainable innovation at sea.

5 Smart Packing Staples for Day-to-Night Cruise Style

by Porthole Cruise and Travel August 20, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

When you’re heading off on a cruise or coastal getaway, packing versatile pieces is key. With limited suitcase space—and often tight storage in your stateroom (we know, you want to bring your entire house)—your wardrobe needs to work for everything from beach lounging and port exploring to formal dinners and date nights. These five essentials help create effortless looks that transition seamlessly from sun-soaked days to elegant evenings—and help you pack smart without overstuffing your suitcase or sacrificing style.

1. A Convertible Day-to-Night Dress (or Set)

Photo: Celebrity Cruises

Packing versatile clothing maximizes suitcase space. A flowy midi or maxi dress, or a coordinated two-piece set in breathable fabrics like linen or cotton, can take you from daytime excursions to dinner effortlessly. Pair your dress with sandals and a sun hat for exploring ports, then switch to wedges or heels and add your favorite jewelry for nighttime. You don’t need to spend a fortune—there are plenty of affordable, stylish options in solids or subtle prints that mix and match easily.

2. Easy Statement Jewelry

Pearl Bubble Necklace | Photo: ALV Jewels

Parker Studs | Photo: ALV Jewels

Accessories are the easiest way to change up an outfit without adding bulk to your suitcase. They can instantly transform a simple base into something fresh and polished. A delicate necklace works beautifully for daytime—think of something like ALV Jewels’ Pearl Bubble Initial Necklace, which adds a personal touch to a sundress, breezy blouse, or even a swimsuit cover-up. As the day winds down and you’re getting ready for dinner, swap the necklace for a pair of earrings that bring a little more shine. Small but statement-making styles—like ALV’s Parker Studs for a sleek, modern vibe or their Sparkle Drop Earrings for a touch of glam—instantly elevate your look without ever feeling overdone. You can explore their wide selection here.

💡 Packing tip: Stick to lightweight, travel-friendly jewelry in metals or finishes that complement most of your clothing. These versatile pieces add polish without bulk, making them ideal accessories for a cruise wardrobe.

3. A Stylish (But Functional) Bag

Photo: ALV Jewels

Every traveler needs one great daytime bag and one chic evening option. A roomy tote or crossbody is ideal for shore excursions and beach days—ALV’s Boat Tote balances practicality with style, holding sunscreen, shades, and a book without looking bulky. For evenings, you often don’t need much more than your cruise ID, but a small clutch or mini bag for your phone and lipstick keeps you feeling put together.

💡 Styling tip: Neutral tones and natural textures like raffia or canvas work with every outfit and feel perfectly at home on a coastal escape.

4. Oversized Sunglasses

Photo: Rido

A great pair of oversized sunglasses is a must. They’re not only essential sun protection, but they also add instant glam whether you’re lounging poolside or strolling through port markets. Black or tortoiseshell frames are timeless, while a bold-colored frame can double as a style statement. You don’t need to break the bank—check out affordable options on Amazon or at your local mall.

💡 Pro tip: Always pack a protective case—scratched lenses are the fastest way to ruin your favorite travel accessory.

5. A Lightweight Layer That Pulls It All Together

Even in warm climates, cruise ships can be breezy, and the air conditioning indoors runs strong. A lightweight layer—like a cropped cardigan, silky wrap, or classic linen shirt—keeps you comfortable while finishing your look. Toss it over a swimsuit at lunch, then drape it over your shoulders for dinner.

💡 Styling tip: Stick to neutrals or soft pastels that can be paired with multiple outfits. A piece with subtle texture or detail, like ribbing or fringe, adds interest without competing with the rest of your wardrobe.

Packing smart for your cruise doesn’t mean sacrificing style. With a few versatile staples—convertible clothing, lightweight jewelry, a functional bag, statement sunglasses, and a go-anywhere layer—you can create effortless looks from day to night. By choosing mix-and-match pieces and thoughtful accessories, you’ll travel light while looking polished at every step of the journey. For your next vacation, which of these tips will you be using?

 A Zero-Emission Cruise Ship

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine August 18, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

The out-of-the-box thinkers at Hurtigruten continue to make progress in their quest to create the world’s most energy-efficient cruise ship.

The cruise line, always on the cutting edge of sustainable sea travel, has just completed a series of tests to improve the ship’s design. They’re testing, among other innovations, retractable sails, large battery packs, contra-rotating propellers and an energy-optimized hull.

“We’re learning a lot from these tests,” Hurtigruten’s Chief Operating Officer Gerry Larsson-Fedde said.

They’re projecting that by 2030, the ship will be ready to sail, emissions-free in normal operations along the Norwegian coast.

written by Julie Bouchner

Princess Cruises is debuting an all-new Spellbound by Magic Castle aboard Star Princess, immersing guests in a speakeasy world of magic, illusions, and storytelling at sea.

“Spellbound has quickly become one of the most talked-about experiences at sea, and we’re thrilled to take it to the next level aboard Star Princess,” said Lorna Warren, Princess Cruises Vice President Hotel Operations and Guest Experiences. “By bringing to life the spirit and setting of the original Magic Castle in Hollywood, our reimagined speakeasy will deliver a one-of-a-kind venue where every guest can feel like they’ve stepped into a world of true magic.”

About the Experience

Following its debut on Sun Princess, Spellbound by Magic Castle on Star Princess introduces a theme honoring the golden age of magic and magician Richard Valentine Pitchford—known as Cardini. His legacy continues through his great-nephew, Randy Pitchford, owner of the Magic Castle, and now aboard Star Princess.

The venue includes a ticketing booth, the Inner Circle, the Cardini Bar, a behind-the-curtain Backstage area, and the Peacock Theater. Each features detailed décor, low lighting, and theatrical elements.

Spellbound will also debut a cocktail menu exclusive to the Cardini Bar, including The Inner Circle, a milk-washed Meili vodka with jasmine tea, and the Cardini, a butter-washed rum Old Fashioned.

Spellbound by Magic Castle will be open to all guests, with multiple nightly showtimes. Admission is $45 per guest and includes two signature cocktails and a magic show. Tickets are available in advance at www.princess.com or onboard. Dinner service will no longer be offered before showtime; guests should plan to dine at least two hours before their reservation.

Currently under construction at Fincantieri, the 177,800-ton, 4,300-guest Star Princess—sister to Sun Princess—will offer 30 dining and bar venues, expanded entertainment and activities, and a variety of accommodations including Sanctuary Collection suites, mini-suites, and balcony staterooms.

With more than 1,500 balcony staterooms, guests can enjoy private ocean views. Key venues include The Dome, a new relaxation and entertainment space; The Princess Arena, the line’s most advanced theater; and The Piazza, the ship’s central gathering place with floor-to-ceiling windows and ocean vistas.

Star Princess will launch with sailings to the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Panama Canal, and Alaska. Bookings are open at www.princess.com/ships-and-experience/ships/st-star-princess.

Seabourn announced its 2027 summer ocean and 2027–2028 expedition itineraries, with new voyages to Alaska, Japan, Antarctica, and beyond.

The season will include 111 departures, 72 itineraries, and visits to 369 destinations across 71 countries aboard Seabourn Pursuit, Seabourn Venture, Seabourn Encore, Seabourn Quest, and Seabourn Ovation.

The collection features the new 94-day “Pole-to-Pole: Grand Expedition,” from the High Arctic to Antarctica; a new 11-day Baltic cruise to Denmark, Sweden, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, and Latvia; and a 14-day solar eclipse voyage in August 2027.

Expedition Voyages

The cruise line will also expand its expedition voyages, with Seabourn Pursuit and Seabourn Venture sailing to 189 remote regions from March 2027 to April 2028. The expeditions are led by a 23-member Expedition Team of scientists, naturalists, scholars, and photographers, and guests will enjoy rare wildlife sightings and authentic cultural moments.

“In the short time since we launched, Seabourn Pursuit and Seabourn Venture have reshaped expedition travel with itineraries that explore remote and remarkable destinations,” said Robin West, Seabourn’s Vice President and General Manager of Expeditions. “Expedition travel is about so much more than just sightseeing. With our expert expedition teams leading every exploration, our guests are gifted new perspectives on the natural wonders of the world and the people and the diverse cultures that make these places so special.”

Voyages run October 2027–March 2028, lasting 10–25 days, and include a pre-cruise hotel stay in Buenos Aires and round-trip flights between Buenos Aires and Ushuaia, Argentina.

Seabourn’s Antarctica expeditions run in three seasons: Early (late Oct–early Dec) with abundant sea ice and penguin mating; Mid (mid-Dec–early Feb) with more land access, penguin chicks, and migratory whales; and Late (mid-Feb–early Mar) with peak whale activity.

Seabourn will also offer Complimentary Signature Events in Antarctica, including a Polar Plunge from the Zodiacs and Caviar on the Ice with Champagne.

Kimberley

A voyage to the Kimberley coast in northwest Australia, one of the world’s last untamed frontiers, awaits, will be held aboard Seabourn Pursuit between May and August 2027.

The landscape features sandstone peaks, waterfalls, and mangrove forests, and the region is home to the Wunambal Gaambera traditional owners, who are Seabourn Pursuit’s godparents.

Guests will visit the King George Falls, the Horizontal Falls and the Montgomery Reef, where tides recede to reveal sea turtles and other marine life. Expeditions include Zodiac rides through crocodile-inhabited Hunter River, a visit to the Paspaley Pearling Company in Kuri Bay, and snorkeling the waters of Ashmore Reef.
