MSC Cruises Uses Shore Power in New York for the First Time

by Julie Bouchner November 3, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

MSC Cruises connected MSC Meraviglia to shore power at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, marking its first plug-in in New York after commissioning tests on October 26. The ship powered all onboard operations using shore electricity, shutting down engines and reducing local emissions.

Lynn Torrent, President, MSC Cruises North America, said: “We are proud to see the advancement of shore power at U.S. ports, including New York. Collaboration with local communities, elected officials and port partners is integral to make this progress possible. We are committed to connect whenever the shoreside technology is available as part of our ongoing efforts to improve local air quality and reduce carbon emissions.”

Andrew Kimball, President & CEO, New York City Economic Development Corporation, said: “NYCEDC is making crucial investments – from shore power upgrades at BCT and the recently approved Brooklyn Marine Terminal project to the forthcoming Manhattan Cruise Terminal master plan – ensuring the future of the cruise industry in New York City is sustainable, efficient, and economically competitive. MSC Cruises’ shore power connection this past weekend – and the connections of Cunard and Princess cruise ships in recent months – delivers on years of community feedback and marks a major step in electrifying New York’s waterfront.”

MSC Cruises has equipped all new ships with shore power since 2017 and continues retrofitting the rest of the fleet. Sixteen of 23 ships can plug in today, with 17 expected by year-end. Recent connections include La Spezia and Le Havre.

The Cruise Division’s luxury brand, Explora Journeys, successfully tested shore power connectivity for the first time in Europe with its second ship, EXPLORA II, at the same port the following day.

The company first used shore power in the U.S. in April 2025 when MSC World America plugged in at PortMiami. In 2024, it connected in 13 ports and completed 142 plug-ins, more than triple the previous year.

The 2025 Readers’ Choice Awards!

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine November 3, 2025

You’ve picked the best in cruise — the best ships, the best amenities, and the best destinations.

And here they are….

🚢 Float Your Boat

Surprisingly, over half of our respondents, 58 percent, preferred river cruising to any other kind of cruising. Of those river fans, 92 percent preferred European ports, but we did have activity elsewhere in the world — including (for our first time) African rivers.

Although Le Commandant Charcot sailed to victory with expedition enthusiasts, ships from Abercrombie & Kent and Celebrity scored well, and Seabourn Venture was listed high as well.

It was also a good year for smaller lines. Little-known lines Cruise Croatia and Sail Vela got surprising traction among luxury voters, and Overseas Adventure Travel got quite a few mentions as a write-in for solo travel.

In our newest category, African River Ports, many cruisers loved various stops along the Nile, but the lure of Victoria Falls was too great to overcome.

For ocean ports this year, the cruise-friendly Caribbean region was less popular than either the Med, Northern Europe, and Alaska. (This may be a Porthole first!)

Aruba didn’t place first in our Caribbean categories, but notably ranked high for both shopping and beaches. Voters also recognized Puerto Rico and Bermuda as the best ports for history and culture. That cultural category (another surprise) voters found more compelling than either shopping or cuisine this year — though beaches still rule the roost when it comes to a Caribbean vacation.

Itineraries include Circumnavigating Ireland and Seven Gems of the Baltic, with longer stays and overnights in some of Europe’s top cities.

“Windstar has a long history of exploring in the Mediterranean and Europe, and the small size of this ship opens even more interesting places—including rivers,” said Christopher Prelog, president of Windstar Cruises. “We focus on itineraries that blend well-known destinations with unexpected gems our guests will love.”

2027 Europe Highlights

These itineraries take full advantage of the ship’s smaller size, allowing docking in central city ports like Bordeaux, Rouen, and London, and accessing exclusive harbors like Caen and San Sebastián.

by Julie Bouchner October 23, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

Today, Celebrity Cruises took delivery of its newest ship, Celebrity Xcel, and revealed the name of its sixth Edge Series vessel, Celebrity Xcite, as construction began at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire. Celebrity Xcite is scheduled to debut in 2028, continuing the brand’s evolution of premium cruising.

“Celebrity Xcel represents the next bold step in our journey to transform the way the world experiences premium travel,” said Jason Liberty, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group. “Each ship in the Edge Series has reimagined what’s possible at sea through elevated design and experiences that deepen guests’ connection to the destinations they visit. With Celebrity Xcel now joining the fleet and Celebrity Xcite on the horizon, we’re continuing to set new standards for innovation alongside our trusted partners at Chantiers de l’Atlantique.”

Adding to that, Laura Hodges Bethge, president of Celebrity Cruises, said, “Celebrity Xcel has been designed with our guests as our north star — we even involved them in the design process through the Xcel Dream Makers program, so we know she’ll be the happy place of vacationers globally. We’re thrilled to welcome guests aboard next month and look forward to expanding these offerings with Celebrity Xcite.”

Laurent Castaing, general manager of Chantiers de l’Atlantique, also reflected on the milestone: “The Edge Series, including Celebrity Xcel and now Celebrity Xcite, is the result of close collaboration between our teams. Our ongoing partnership with Royal Caribbean Group embodies a shared commitment to excellence and innovation.”

The handover ceremony at the Saint-Nazaire shipyard brought together Royal Caribbean Group executives, Celebrity Cruises leadership, Captain Kyriakos Matragkas, and more than 1,600 crew members. The event featured traditional maritime honors, including a formal signing, flag exchange, and toast in the ship’s three-story Grand Plaza.

Launching this November, Celebrity Xcel will introduce seven new spaces designed to blur the line between ship and shore, offering guests more ways to relax and explore. The ship will sail seven-night Caribbean itineraries from Fort Lauderdale before repositioning to Europe in summer 2026 for seven- to 11-night Mediterranean voyages from Barcelona and Athens, featuring new overnight stays in Madeira, Portugal.

During the celebration, Celebrity Cruises also announced the official start of construction for Celebrity Xcite. The sixth Edge Series ship will continue to advance the brand’s commitment to design and innovation when it launches in 2028.

Family Travel to the Galápagos Surges for National Geographic–Lindblad Expeditions

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 22, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

National Geographic–Lindblad Expeditions reports a strong rise in multi-generational family travel to the Galápagos this summer, reflecting growing interest in shared, meaningful experiences and new opportunities for travel advisors.

The company saw a 24% year-over-year increase in guests under 18, with the Galápagos leading the trend. The number of young travelers to the islands grew by 40% following the fleet’s expansion from two to four ships—a 31% boost in capacity. Children made up 21% of all guests in the Galápagos this summer, the highest share among destinations.

Lindblad Expeditions Holdings CEO Natalya Leahy recently visited the islands with her family, filming their experience and speaking with children onboard. “The Galápagos has always been one of the most powerful places to experience as a family,” she said. “Seeing the islands through my children’s eyes—and through the excitement of other young travelers—was a reminder of how these journeys inspire curiosity and connection across generations.”

Long known as a “bucket-list” destination, the Galápagos is increasingly appealing to families seeking adventure with purpose. For advisors, the growth in multi-generational travel highlights a strong luxury market segment, with the Galápagos offering exceptional value through limited access, rich wildlife encounters, and educational programming for all ages.

With the addition of National Geographic Delfina and National Geographic Gemini, the company now operates four expedition ships in the region—expanding capacity and giving advisors more ways to tailor experiences for families. Continuing a legacy that began when Lars-Eric Lindblad led the first citizen expedition to the Galápagos in 1967, today’s voyages are designed to engage every generation. Onboard programs like National Geographic Explorers-in-Training help young guests explore like true adventurers, supported by small-ship settings, connecting cabins, and expert guides who bring the islands to life for travelers of all ages.

DELIVERING THE WOW, by Richard Fain

by Judi Cuervo October 21, 2025
written by Judi Cuervo

Five years ago, I happily ditched the corporate world. So what on Earth am I doing reading a business book?

The answer to that is that Royal Caribbean Group Chairman Richard Fain’s Delivering the WOW is no typical business book. I’m not glazing over through chapters dissecting statistical analytics, operating systems, the stock market, and digital platforms. Instead, I’m learning about the fascinating evolution of Royal Caribbean from a little side-arm of the near-bankrupt Norwegian company Gotaas-Larsen Shipping Corporation to the global cruising powerhouse it is today.

Fain joined Gottas-Larsen as treasurer in the mid-1970s — a time when Royal Caribbean operated three ships, each carrying only 720 guests. Soon after, the company, desperate to raise cash, looked to their all-but-forgotten cruise division as a possible lifeline. From that moment, we join Fain as he is awed by the cruise industry, first with the stretching of Song of Norway to accommodate a mind-blowing (at that time) 1,040 guests, through the three decades of innovation that followed.

RELATED: CEO Richard Sasso Creates an Unselfish World

And that’s the beauty of Delivering the WOW. Fain’s voice throughout isn’t one of a lecturer educating his audience but that of a student who is learning along with his readers. We are there in the early days as he grasps the potential of the cruise industry and marvels at the technical aspects of Royal Caribbean’s growing fleet. We watch as Fain envisions revolutionary concepts and brings them to fruition, no matter the obstacles, and we cheer him on as he demonstrates devotion to his executives, employees, and crew.

Royal Caribbean fans, in particular, will be dazzled by Fain’s revealing stories, like the logic behind Sovereign of the Seas’ five-level atrium and the design and engineering challenges it posed, and why the signature rock-climbing wall is such a valued feature aboard Royal Caribbean ships even though only 10 percent of guests ever scurry up it. Those incredible floating platforms aboard Celebrity Edge? They originated simply as a way for guests to easily board the ship’s tenders.

We suffer with Fain through the covid years, when the company faced not only financial challenges but the logistical nightmare of getting 40,000 crew members home to 90 different countries. But we celebrate with him too, standing right alongside when the $2 billion, 250,000 grt Icon of the Seas (the biggest WOW, literally) is delivered on November 27, 2023 in Turku, Finland.

Fain is the first to admit that Royal Caribbean’s success and innovation stems from collaboration, not only with the outside designers, engineers, and shipyards contracted to bring ideas to life, but with Royal Caribbean staff and crew whose opinions are routinely solicited and who, more than a few times, caught what could have been serious boo-boos in the design of major ship features.

I suppose in some ways Delivering the WOW is a business book — each chapter ends with a listing of “key business takeaways” that could apply to any industry — but it’s abundantly clear that it’s the absorbing tales of the ships, the industry, and the crew that are Fain’s real focus. Why else would chapters open with the quirky origins of nautical terms like “Shipshape,” “Gross Ton,” “Feeling Blue,” “All Hands On Deck,” and more, and not some lame snippets about systems theory or contingency management?

Delivering the WOW just might appeal to corporate types looking to delve into Fain’s vision, passion, resilience, and courage, but if you ask me, the cruise fan — even those who can’t tell a business model from a fashion model — is the real audience. Because this fascinating, beautifully written book was so obviously written by one of us!

Delivering the WOW publishes on October 21, 2025, and is available on amazon.com

Carnival Cruise Line Celebrates 25 Years Sailing from Galveston

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 20, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Carnival Cruise Line marked 25 years of sailing from Galveston with a special event aboard its flagship, Carnival Jubilee. As the first cruise line to homeport in Galveston in 2000, Carnival has since welcomed more than 10 million guests through the port—helping establish the city as a leading cruise hub.

MORE ABOUT THE EVENT

President Christine Duffy hosted the celebration alongside community leaders, business partners, and officials—including U.S. Congressman Randy Weber, Galveston Mayor Craig Brown, and Port Director and CEO Rodger Rees—honoring the cruise line’s long-standing partnership with the community.

“Sailing from Galveston has been a defining part of Carnival’s story for the last 25 years, and we’re just getting started,” said Duffy. “This milestone is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when strong partnerships, community support, and a passion for fun come together. From being the first cruise operator to homeport here to launching Carnival Jubilee—a ship that honors our Texas roots—we’re proud of what we’ve built and even more excited about what’s ahead.”

Carnival Jubilee holds a special place in this legacy as the first new ship inaugurated at the Port of Galveston in 2023. Featuring a Texas star on her bow, she represents Carnival’s continued commitment to the region. The Excel-class ship was also the first North American vessel to offer 5G connectivity and the first Galveston-based ship powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), underscoring Carnival’s focus on innovation and sustainability.

“Galveston loves Carnival,” said Mayor Craig Brown. “As we celebrate 25 years together, we look forward to many more decades of welcoming Carnival guests and continuing to grow the positive economic impact on our community.”

Carnival remains the only cruise line homeporting four ships from Galveston. Beginning in 2027/28, a refreshed lineup will bring its largest-ever guest capacity and an expanded range of itineraries from the port.

“Celebrating 25 years with Carnival highlights the strong partnership between our port and the cruise line,” said Rodger Rees, Port Director and CEO. “Their ongoing investment has driven meaningful economic growth, and we’re proud to share this milestone.”

Carnival offers cruises from Galveston ranging from short getaways to week-long voyages across the Caribbean, Mexico, and The Bahamas, with many itineraries including a visit to Celebration Key, the line’s new private destination.

The anniversary also coincided with the Port of Galveston’s bicentennial celebrations, including the 200th Anniversary Gala, sponsored by Carnival. Proceeds from the event fund maritime scholarships at Texas A&M University at Galveston.
