Celebrity Announces Four New Venues for Guests Aboard Celebrity Xcel

by Porthole Cruise and Travel July 8, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Celebrity Cruises’s newest ship Celebrity Xcel will feature four brand new venues, including a pool club, an arcade lounge, an expansive spa and Celebrity’s first flagship store.

“Celebrity Xcel will set sail with seven new elevated experiences that invite guests to escape their daily routine and make memories that will last a lifetime,” said Laura Hodges Bethge, president of Celebrity Cruises. “With so much innovation at every turn, the journey will be just as fun as the destinations themselves.”

New Pool Club Experience

The Celebrity Pool Club offers a unique relaxation experience for guests with its new pool valet, offering chilled towels, card games, sunscreen and storage for personal items. Guests can also upgrade to a VIP package for dedicated valet service and a private cabana.

On the last sea day of every cruise, Celebrity Pool Club transforms into the Poolest Day Ever, featuring Caribbean-inspired live music, pop-up shows, and pool games. Specialty drinks are available exclusively on this day, and at night, the venue becomes a poolside party called Shine the Night.

A Retro Games Room

The new games room, Attic at The Club, will be open 24/7, featuring neon lights and retro games like Pac-Man, NBA Showtime and Golden Tee. The adult-oriented space will also offer pool, darts, foosball and shuffleboard. Guests can book a private event space for group activities such as karaoke and golf simulation.

An Elevated Spa Experience

Celebrity Xcel’s spa is the largest yet for the line, including the first-ever Hydra Room—a water-focused experience with a jacuzzi pool and heated lounge chairs located in the Thermal Suite.

The Vitamin D Deck, exclusive to Thermal Suite guests, offers front-of-ship views, seating, and non-alcoholic beverages. The Spa will have over 120 treatments and therapies for guests to choose from, as well as a new bubbles bar and an interactive shopping experience. The Skin Lab provides tailored recommendations for guests to help them find the perfect skincare routine.

Interactive Flagship Store

The cruise line’s first Celebrity Flagship store will be an interactive experience for guests, from screens with trivia questions and insider facts to historical artifacts and vintage collectibles. Guests can also choose an item for engraving, embroidery, or printing, including water bottles, cocktail kits, keychains, caps, and robes.

Celebrity Xcel will offer seven new venues in total, and guests can help the cruise line finalize its new spaces by joining Xcel “Dream Makers,” a community of vacationers who test and vote on new experiences. Dream Makers help inform the cruise line’s decisions regarding its menus, interior design and entertainment, including choosing games for Attic at The Club artifacts for the Celebrity Flagship store.

Celebrity Xcel Inaugural Season Highlights

Celebrity Xcel’s inaugural season begins in November, sailing from Fort Lauderdale on seven-night cruises to The Bahamas, Mexico, the Cayman Islands, Puerto Plata, St. Thomas, and St. Maarten. In summer 2026, the ship will sail to Europe on seven- to 11-night journeys from Barcelona and Athens, including new stops in Madeira, Portugal.

Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection Launches Luminara

by Julie Bouchner July 8, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

Luminara, the third yacht from The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, launched on July 3, 2025, from Monte Carlo. The seven-night cruise to Rome includes stops in Cannes, Livorno, and Portofino.

The christening ceremony included executives Jim Murren, Ernesto Fara, Tina Edmundson, Captain Tom Roth, and General Manager Muna Azab. British actress Simone Ashley served as godmother and officially named the yacht, breaking a Champagne bottle against the bow in a traditional maritime blessing.

“Welcoming Luminara to our fleet reflects our continued focus on thoughtful expansion and innovation,” said Ernesto Fara, President of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. “This launch brings together years of collaboration and intentional design to deliver a yacht that sets a new benchmark for the industry. Unparalleled accommodations, exceptional service, and an unwavering commitment to excellence define the experience we are proud to offer guests aboard Luminara.”

Expanding on the brand’s broader vision, Tina Edmundson, President of Luxury at Marriott International, added: “Luminara is a testament and extension of the pioneering role of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection as the first luxury hospitality brand to launch into yachting. It embodies the emotional richness of travel — the places that stay with you, the cultures that shape you, and the sense of belonging that exceptional hospitality creates.”

About Luminara

Luminara is the third superyacht from The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, joining Evrima and Ilma. Measuring 794 feet (242 meters), the yacht was designed in partnership with Chapi Design Luxury Division, AD Associates, dpa lighting consultants, and Aivan. It accommodates up to 452 guests in 226 suites, each with a private terrace and floor-to-ceiling windows.

The yacht’s art collection includes 731 works, with nearly two-thirds commissioned exclusively for Luminara. Many explore the theme of light and draw from Malta’s cultural heritage. Artists featured include Paul Klee, David Hockney, Alexander Calder, Henri Matisse, Gerhard Richter, and Andy Warhol.

Dining options include five restaurants, with concepts by Fabio Trabocchi and Michael Mina. These are complemented by seven bars and lounges, including the new Art Bar, which pairs craft cocktails with Cycladic art and ocean views.

Onboard Amenities

Highlights include a panoramic pool deck with two whirlpools, The Ritz-Carlton Spa® with treatments by ESPA, 111SKIN, and Pisterzi, and a full Marina experience with water access, sunbathing areas, and a floating platform for swimming and watersports like kayaking, paddleboarding, and e-foiling.

Retail offerings feature Cartier, IWC Schaffhausen, and Piaget, alongside a boutique with resort wear, vintage finds, and curated items from Hermès, Chanel, La DoubleJ, and others.

Bookings Now Open

Luminara launched its inaugural Mediterranean season in July 2025. In December, it will begin sailing in Asia-Pacific, followed by Alaska and Canada in summer 2026. Reservations are now available at ritzcarltonyachtcollection.com.

All That’s Vintage

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine July 7, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Hurtling into the future can be so tiring, and worse … it can be tacky. Things that last tend to be not just practical but classy. And as any traveler knows, practical plus classy equals worth packing, worth bringing home, and worth remembering for years to come.

Amsterdam

I.J. Hallen stakes a claim to being the largest flea market in Europe, located in the heart of the Dutch capital one or two weekends a month (check ahead for the schedule). Stalls sell treasures ranging from cowboy hats to antique signs, mid-century furniture, collectible ceramics, jazz LPs, designer denim, and much more. .

London

There are more important qualities than “roomy” in a good ride. Small Car Big City rents out classic Mini Coopers for peppy private-car sightseeing tours, with themes like “London for Lovers,” “Mother’s Ruin Gin,” and “Rock’n’Roll Beatles.” The aim of the restored fleet (and their knowledgeable drivers) is to let visitors feel like locals.

Paris

The flea markets of France are legendary incubators of creativity. Marché Dauphine is the only one with a glass-canopied exhibition room, showcasing collectors and artists, specialized antique dealers and avant-garde exhibitions as well as workshops in crafts like birch marquetry, gilding, and painting restoration.

Copenhagen

The Larsbjørnssstræde area is loaded with vintage shops, and Carmen Copenhagen is among the oldest and best, with funky fashions to suit any style. The hats, boots, scarves, blouses, and slacks sold here have a special focus on the 70s and 80s, and tend toward saturated colors, flattering lines, and superior craftsmanship. Fancy a pair of kid gloves? A lemon-yellow faux-fur coat? Come try them on.

Ship Review: MSC World America

by Julie Bouchner July 7, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

Having sailed on MSC World Europa in Europe back in 2023, I was eager to experience MSC Cruises’ newest ship, MSC World America—the second in the World-class fleet—this time departing from my home state of Florida. Instead of a seven-hour flight across the Atlantic, it was just a 45-minute drive to PortMiami.

The convenience was a definite perk, but I was equally curious to see how MSC Cruises would adapt its innovative, high-tech, European-style megaship for the North American market. Would the dining, entertainment, and onboard vibe feel different? With that in mind, I boarded MSC World America ready to find out.

For both sailings—on MSC World Europa and now on MSC World America—I stayed in the Yacht Club, MSC’s exclusive ship-within-a-ship enclave. The experience was just as seamless and personalized the second time around. From private spaces and priority access to dedicated butler service and a peaceful atmosphere, the Yacht Club once again delivered a quiet, elevated retreat from the ship’s busier areas—without missing out on the energy and variety elsewhere onboard. With over 6,700 guests at full capacity, MSC World America is built for scale, yet it still manages to feel organized.

The modern design, smart features, and striking social areas set the stage for a big-ship experience that feels fresh and forward-thinking—read on to see how it all came together during my time onboard.

MSC World America Specs

  • Entered Service – 2025

  • Number of Cabins – 2,626

  • Passenger Capacity – 6,762

  • Crew – 2,138

  • Gross Tons – 215,863

  • Length – 1,093 feet

  • Beam – 154 feet

  • Decks – 22

  • Powered by – LNG (liquefied natural gas)

Embarkation: Quick, Personalized, and Seamless

Embarkation at the new MSC Miami Cruise Terminal was quick and well-organized. As a Yacht Club guest, I was greeted curbside by MSC staff who took my luggage and escorted me to a separate check-in area—no lines, no waiting.

Within minutes, I was onboard and welcomed into the Yacht Club lounge with a drink and a comfortable place to relax. My butler introduced himself, walked me through the essentials, and helped secure reservations for dinner, shows, and other onboard experiences. The MSC for Me app was easy to navigate, and with just a few taps, everything was booked. Shortly after, we were escorted to our balcony stateroom, where our luggage was already waiting, making it easy to settle in and unpack right away.

Before we knew it, we were pulling away from PortMiami, and our journey began!

Where We Sailed

Our seven-night itinerary included three Caribbean ports: Puerto Plata, San Juan, and MSC’s private island, Ocean Cay Marine Reserve.

In Puerto Plata, we spent the day at Casa Colonial Beach Resort, relaxing by the pool and enjoying the resort’s peaceful atmosphere. It was a perfect way to unwind and soak up the sun without the rush of traditional excursions.

San Juan was a late port day, which gave us plenty of time to explore both Old and New Town at our own pace. We explored the streets, visited historic landmarks, and wrapped up the day with local cuisine near the port.

At Ocean Cay, we booked a Yacht Club cabana that happened to face the ocean. We enjoyed lunch by the water, relaxed on the beach, and went for a swim. The island’s white sand and clear water created a peaceful setting. Before we knew it, it was time to get back onboard.

This mix of destinations brought a great balance to the cruise—combining relaxation, culture, and beach time without feeling rushed.

Life On Board

MSC World America offers something for nearly every type of traveler. If you’re seeking adventure, try the CliffHanger or the two-level Sky Trail® ropes course. For those focused on fitness, the ship features a beautiful gym loaded with Technogym equipment and workout classes you can book via the MSC for Me app. The spa offers thermal access with amenities like sauna and steam room, perfect for relaxing before or after treatments.

The World Promenade is home to the coffee emporium, an ice cream parlor, Paxos restaurant, and more—great spots to grab a treat or a bite while exploring the ship.

Located at the aft, the stunning Panorama Lounge hosts music-themed experiences to enjoy over pre-show drinks. An interactive floor with unique designs transforms the space, while changing screens reflect the theme of the night. The lounge seats 462 people and offers a lively atmosphere for entertainment.

Entertainment was a highlight throughout the ship. MSC World America features a variety of shows, including Dirty Dancing in Concert, Queen Symphonic, and two new productions: Momentous (an illusion show) and Odyssey (an acrobatic performance). In addition, guests can enjoy comedy acts, dueling pianos, and karaoke at The Loft. We especially loved the Dirty Dancing show and spent nearly every night at The Loft for dueling pianos, as well as relaxing with piano and singing performances in the MSC Yacht Club’s Top Sail Lounge.

These are just a few of the many highlights from my time aboard MSC World America!

Dining

MSC World America offers a wide range of dining options with 13 venues, including six specialty restaurants. During our cruise, we tried several standout spots: The new Eataly Restaurant, Paxos (the Greek restaurant), Kaito Teppanyaki Grill and Sushi Bar, and Butcher’s Cut steakhouse. We also enjoyed the MSC Yacht Club’s exclusive restaurant, La Brasserie. With so many choices onboard, we only had one meal at the Yacht Club restaurant but often relaxed with lunch by the Yacht Club pool.

The ship also features the Latin American street food-inspired Hola! Tacos & Cantina, adding to the diverse culinary lineup. MSC World America delivers interactive, immersive dining experiences that blend local flavors with global tastes, perfect for the worldly traveler.

Guests can also explore three spacious buffet restaurants, each offering a distinct ambiance alongside the main dining rooms.

Bars ranged from casual spots to upscale lounges. The Elixir Mixology Bar served craft cocktails, while the sports bar offered comfort food and big screens. There was never a dull moment, and we were always busy enjoying the ship’s many activities and venues.

Final Thoughts

MSC World America shows where megaship cruising is headed: immersive, tech-forward, environmentally conscious, and well-designed. It’s not a small ship or an ultra-luxury vessel, but it delivers for families, multigenerational groups, and couples seeking variety and excitement.

For a quieter experience, especially if the ship’s large guest capacity feels overwhelming, the Yacht Club is a great choice. It offers private spaces, personalized service, and a calm retreat from the busier areas. You can’t go wrong with either option; it all comes down to the kind of experience you’re looking for.

Did MSC World America live up to MSC’s goal to “cruise differently”? Absolutely. I’d sail her again without hesitation.

Viking Cruises Officially Names Viking Vesta

by Porthole Cruise and Travel July 1, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Viking Cruises held a naming ceremony on Monday for its new ocean ship, Viking Vesta, in Split, Croatia.

The ship, which will resume its inaugural season sailing in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe, has 499 staterooms and can host 998 guests. It is classified as a small ship, as are all of Viking’s ocean ships, and has a gross tonnage of 54,300 tons.

More About the Ceremony

    • Norwegian journalist Lene Tangevald-Jensen served as the ceremonial godmother of Viking Vesta.

    • In keeping with Viking tradition, she used a Viking broadaxe to cut a ribbon that allowed a bottle of aquavit, a Scandinavian spirit, to break on the ship’s hull.

    • The ceremony also featured performances by famous crossover soprano and godmother of Viking Jupiter Sissel Kyrkjebø and Norwegian violinist Tor Jaran Apold.

About Lene Tangevald-Jensen

Tangevald-Jensen is known for her journalistic and philanthropic work. She earned a master’s degree in business and worked in the private sector, investing in stocks and real estate. She has spent decades writing for Norwegian financial publications Kapital and Finansavisen, in addition to writing for OSLO, a street magazine that aims to amplify the voices of those living in poverty.

RELATED: Viking Cruises Takes Delivery of Viking Vesta

“As we celebrate 10 years of ocean voyages in 2025, we are pleased to welcome the new Viking Vesta to our award-winning fleet of elegant sister ships,” said Torstein Hagen, Viking Chairman and CEO. “We are also very grateful to Lene for serving as godmother. In addition to her personal and professional accomplishments, Lene embodies the values that are very important to me and to Viking—she is kind, honest, hardworking and, of course, curious. I am proud to count her as a friend and a valued member of the extended Viking family.”

Tangevald-Jensen’s philanthropy efforts include working with the LEON Trust to support education for children in Kenya, Sri Lanka and Nepal, partnering with Make-A-Wish Foundation Norway and founding TBS Gallery, an art space in Oslo dedicated to the work of sculptor Tore Bjørn Skjølsvik. Tangevald-Jensen is a close friend and neighbor of CEO Torstein Hagen, and she and her partner joined an expedition to Antarctica aboard Viking Polaris to film a documentary about the continent.

Crystal Cruises has finalized financing for its first two high-end cruise ships via an Export Credit Agency facility backed by Italy’s SACE. The expansion is part of a larger effort by the cruise line to upgrade its fleet.

“Securing this financing represents a decisive step forward in Crystal’s expansion and demonstrates the strong market confidence in our strategy,” said Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio, Executive Chairman of A&K Travel Group, Crystal’s parent company. “We are grateful for the trust placed in us by our banking partners, led by Citibank, N.A. London Branch, along with Banco Santander, S.A., CaixaBank, S.A., UK Branch, Cassa Depositi e Prestiti S.p.A., Credit Agricole Corporate and Investment Bank, Banca Monte Dei Paschi Di Siena S.p.a., and Bper Banca S.p.A. This consortium’s backing validates our position in the ultra-luxury cruise segment.”

Crystal finalized the loan with the help of Italian joint-stock company Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, as well as Simest, a financial institution that aids companies in internationalization and helped Crystal structure its financing package. The two ships will each accommodate about 650 guests and will weigh roughly 61,800 tons. They were designed by renowned international architectural firms and will feature suites with private verandas, single-occupancy accommodations designed for solo travelers, and one of the highest crew-to-passenger ratios in the luxury cruise industry.

New Ships in the Crystal Fleet

The first ship is expected to be completed in May 2028, and the second will follow its original timeline for completion. Construction has been able to proceed as planned on account of Crystal’s ongoing partnership with Fincantieri, one of the world’s largest shipbuilding groups, and the group’s three-decade relationship with the Lefebvre family.

“The SACE-backed ECA financing was made possible through the dedicated support of key Italian financial institutions,” said Cristina Levis, AKTG CEO. “We extend our deep gratitude to the Italian Export Credit Agency SACE, under the leadership of CEO Alessandra Ricci and team leader Mariano Di Biagio, for their strategic partnership.”

Glamor in the Med: Bridgerton Star Names Ritz-Carlton Yacht

by Porthole Cruise and Travel June 27, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Barcelona just got a whole lot more glam — thanks to Bridgerton bombshell Simone Ashley, who officially christened Luminara, the third luxury ship from The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, during a sun-soaked ceremony on the Med yesterday, June 26.

The new godmother, best known for her roles in Bridgerton and Sex Education, marked the occasion by leading a toast and overseeing the ceremonial breaking of a Champagne bottle against the yacht’s mast as the vessel’s horn sounded.

“It’s an extraordinary honor to be named godmother of Luminara — a yacht that represents the very best of exploration, artistry, and hospitality,” said Ashley. “Both travel and a love for the ocean have always played a profound role in my life. They open us up, invite us to look more closely, to listen more deeply, and to understand the world and ourselves in new ways.”

The event brought together senior figures from The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and Marriott International, along with collaborators from the fashion, design, culinary, and travel industries. Attendees were offered Champagne, canapés, and live music, with remarks from company President Ernesto Fara, Captain Magnus Bengtsson, and General Manager Muna Azab.

Fara described the vessel as “a magnificent new yacht” combining “inspired design, world-class cuisine, and enriching itineraries.”

Spanning 794 feet (242 meters), Luminara includes 226 ocean-view suites and can accommodate up to 452 guests. The yacht features a new Residential Suite category, multiple dining venues, a dedicated wine vault, The Ritz-Carlton Spa, and a marina with direct access to the sea. The design, developed with AD Associates, Chapi Design Luxury Division, and dpa lighting consultants, emphasizes indoor-outdoor living and includes an art collection with works by Paul Klee, Andy Warhol, and Henri Matisse.

Luminara will begin its maiden voyage — a 7-night itinerary from Monte Carlo to Rome — on July 3. It will later sail through Africa, the Indian Ocean, and the Asia-Pacific region, with inaugural voyages to Alaska and Canada scheduled for summer 2026.
