Disney Cruise Line welcomed its newest ship, Disney Destiny, on Monday evening with a christening ceremony at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale.

“For more than 100 years, we have entertained our fans in new and innovative ways, connecting them to the Disney stories they love,” said Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences, during the celebration. “Disney Cruise Line is a powerful part of that legacy because our ships become brand ambassadors that travel the globe and bring joy to our guests in ways only Disney can. Now, the Disney Destiny makes its own extraordinary entry into our growing fleet.”

More about the Christening Ceremony

  • The event featured a multi-tiered stage, drone effects, scenic projections on the ship, live music, and a full vocal ensemble.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. has confirmed a newbuild order with Fincantieri for a third Prestige-Class vessel for Regent Seven Seas Cruises. The ship is scheduled for delivery in 2033, marking the next step in the brand’s luxury growth plan.

Following Seven Seas Prestige in 2026 and the second Prestige-Class ship in 2030, the third vessel will continue the brand’s signature design and all-inclusive experience.

“This newbuild order continues our measured, strategic expansion within the luxury space, providing guests with yet another way to experience the unrivaled aboard The World’s Most Luxurious Fleet,” said Jason Montague, Chief Luxury Officer at Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. “It reflects our confidence in the growing demand for Regent’s best-in-class offering and reaffirms our long-standing partnership with Fincantieri, one rooted in craftsmanship and shared pursuit of perfection.”

Seven Seas Prestige will be 40 percent larger than previous Regent ships but will carry only 10 percent more guests. At 77,000 tons, with room for 822 guests and 630 crew members, it will offer some of the highest space and service ratios in the industry.

All suites onboard feature balconies and span 12 categories, including four new suite types. Highlights include the Skyview Regent Suite, the largest all-inclusive suite at sea, plus new two-level Skyview and Grand Loft Suites.

Public spaces include the Starlight Atrium and the art-inspired Galileo’s Bar. The ship will offer 11 dining options, with an additional venue to be announced. New choices include Azure, a Mediterranean mezze-style restaurant, alongside favorites like Chartreuse, Prime 7, and Pacific Rim.

“Our long-term strategic expansion with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd., established over the past years through multiple successful orders, continues to strengthen our collaboration, especially within the ultra-luxury segment represented by Regent Seven Seas Cruises,” commented Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri. “This latest contract confirms the trust NCLH places in Fincantieri’s expertise to deliver innovative, sustainable, and finely crafted ships that meet the evolving aspirations of the luxury cruise market.”

On Seven Stars in Kyushu

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine November 7, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Japan is renowned for its excellent train service: the most efficient, the fastest, and the cleanest in the world. Now, in order to showcase the natural beauty and culture of its southern island of Kyushu in style, JR Kyushu has presented the travel enthusiast with Seven Stars In Kyushu. This glamorous sleeper train that runs through several of Kyushu’s prefectures to some of the more remote and beautiful locales. It’s more than a mere train trip; it’s an authentically Japanese cultural experience — and  a five-star one at that. A trip on Seven Stars in Kyushu should be on the bucket list of anyone who enjoys Japanese art, culture and nature.

Unlike Japan’s shinkansen bullet trains, Seven Stars is a cruise train, leisurely meandering through Kyushu’s subtropical climes complete with the nostalgic gentle rocking and the clickety-clack of an old-fashioned train.

Named for the seven prefectures of Kyushu Island and the train’s seven coaches, Seven Stars in Kyushu is a modern version of the luxury scenic train experience. Fashioned by renowned industrial designer Eiji Mitooka, the interior is furnished in a classical style with Japanese finishings. Appreciation for the work of local experts and artisans is evident. Decorated by craftsmen from Fukuoka, the train is known for its fine kumiko design, a prized Japanese woodwork lattice technique which is handmade without nails and creates intricate geometries from slivers of Japanese wood.

Look Back in Elegance

The journey starts at Fukuoka’s Hakata Station in the elegant wood-panelled Seven Stars lounge, indulging in canapes and Kyushu-centric beverages with a live performance by a concert pianist before it’s time to alight the train. The classical style of the lounge and the old-fashioned tickets and luggage tags distributed to the passengers upon arrival give one the feeling of stepping back in time to the golden age of train travel, although with every comfort of the modern world.

Seven Stars comprises 10 suites that ensure an intimate experience, each one lavishly appointed in a style far too luxurious to be imagined on a train. The spacious cabins each have their own stylish, Japanese-inspired en suite bathrooms with wooden floors and an Arita-ware porcelain sink. Furnishings like the writing desk and armchairs by day cleverly convert into comfortable beds by night. Sliding doors with a heavy curtain ensure silence and privacy when it comes time to sleep in your comfortable, locally made woven-cotton pajamas.

Afternoons and evenings on board are never dull, with live….

Florida International University’s Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management has appointed Larry Pimentel as its first Distinguished Executive-in-Residence for International Cruise Curriculum Development.

Pimentel, a veteran cruise executive and former educator, will work with the university to align hospitality education with industry needs, helping prepare students for careers in the growing global cruise sector.

“I have an educator’s heart and a hands-on approach,” said Pimentel. “I’ll be the bridge between this academic institution and the industry by helping create a curriculum relevant to the cruise sector.”

About Larry Pimentel

With more than three decades of leadership experience, Pimentel has served as CEO of Azamara Cruises, SeaDream Yacht Club, Cunard Line, and Seabourn, and as founding president and CEO of Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings, joint operator of Four Seasons Yachts. His leadership has shaped brands across Carnival Corp. & plc and Royal Caribbean Group, introducing concepts such as SeaDream’s “It’s yachting, not cruising” and Azamara’s “Destination Immersion.”

National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions Expands River Collection for 2027-2028

by Julie Bouchner November 4, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions has released its 2027–2028 river cruise lineup, adding new itineraries and expanding capacity across key global regions.

The season will feature sailings in Egypt, India, Vietnam, and Europe. Connect will continue her spring and summer routes in Amsterdam and France. In 2027, sister ship Evolve will join the fleet and debut three Christmas sailings and one holiday itinerary, marking the brand’s first winter river program in Europe. Returning vessels include Charaidew II on India’s Brahmaputra River, The Jahan on the Mekong, and Oberoi Philae on the Nile, which will feature a visit to the new Grand Egyptian Museum.

“Our river journeys invite guests to see the world in a more intentional way — unhurried, intimate, and deeply connected to place,” said Natalya Leahy, CEO, Lindblad Expeditions. “We’re thrilled that our new European and Indian river expeditions have been so well received, and we’re delighted to offer even more ways to explore — including festive European Christmas market sailings. Because how you see the world matters, and that’s what makes our river collection so special.”

This season builds on a year of strong growth, extending the co-brand’s river program alongside new voyages from the Azores to the Arctic. The lineup reinforces National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions’ focus on curated itineraries, meaningful cultural experiences, and expert guidance, with each sailing led by seasoned Expedition Leaders and Field Staff.

Wellness on the River

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine November 4, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

On my first river cruise a decade ago, the “wellness” options were a few guided bike tours and a sundeck hot tub. On the first ride along the Rhine, the bikes were rolled out to the ship by the employees of a local bike shop, and within a half-mile, my seat fell off, nearly impaling my keister. At least I could immerse myself in the hot tub afterward. Um, no, the tub was as cold as the autumn chill, and it wouldn’t be repaired until the cruise ended. Ugh.

Wellness on river cruises has come a long way. Behemoth ocean cruise ships have offered wellness options for decades, ranging from spas to yoga classes and vegan meal options, but the trend is just bubbling to the surface on river ships, where the wellness trend is surging despite the much smaller size of the ships.

Wellness options on cruises was ranked as a top-10 trend in 2025 at the Global Wellness Summit. “Today’s river cruisers are increasingly looking for experiences that promote health and wellness, and we’re proud to offer these activities,” says Kristin Karst, co-owner of AmaWaterways, a line which has led the way in offering wellness on the world’s rivers.

PLOD, PEDAL, PADDLE

Walking and cycling excursions are offered on many river cruises, with the exploding popularity of e-bikes driving the bike-excursion trend. E-bikes allow couples to pedal together even when there’s a fitness gap because “pedal-assist” settings let the slower cyclist keep up with less effort. Walking excursions show off cities and towns in depth, with local guides offering lessons in history and architecture at a comfortable but calorie-burning stroll.

Emerald Cruises’ river trips, for example, include bike rides along the Danube, hikes in the Rhine Gorge, and canoeing in France. Travelers who prefer to explore on their own can get maps and advice from the cruise director before venturing out on foot or on an onboard bike or e-bike, which many river ships now carry. There’s often a riverside path where the ship docks that can be followed for miles.

YOGA, PICKLEBALL, PILATES

Soaking cucumbers in vinegar water is how pickles are made, so maybe it shouldn’t be that surprising that pickleball can be played over the rippling waters of major rivers. The pickleball court on AmaWaterways’ double-wide ship AmaMagna, unveiled last winter, is the first full-sized sports court on a river ship. Expect other river cruise companies to follow suit as the popularity of pickleball persists; many river ships already feature perimeter walking tracks, swimming pools, and hot tubs.

These aren’t the only nods to wellness on river ships. Riverside Luxury Cruises’ Riverside Mozart has a tidal-current pool for lap swimming; a spa with massage rooms, men’s and women’s saunas, and steam rooms; and a spacious gym. Many other river cruises have also added pools, spa facilities, gyms, onboard bikes, and even wellness “hosts” or “coaches” who lead yoga, Pilates, cardio, core, and even dance classes.

FRESH, LOCALLY SOURCED MEALS

On river cruises, the kitchen crew can pick up fresh produce, fish, and other ingredients daily along the river, a luxury that isn’t possible on most oceangoing ships. Another advantage over ocean ships: Many river-cruise chefs, because river ships seldom carry more than 200 passengers, can customize meals to accommodate individual .…

You’ve picked the best in cruise — the best ships, the best amenities, and the best destinations.

And here they are….

🚢 Float Your Boat

Surprisingly, over half of our respondents, 58 percent, preferred river cruising to any other kind of cruising. Of those river fans, 92 percent preferred European ports, but we did have activity elsewhere in the world — including (for our first time) African rivers.

Although Le Commandant Charcot sailed to victory with expedition enthusiasts, ships from Abercrombie & Kent and Celebrity scored well, and Seabourn Venture was listed high as well.

It was also a good year for smaller lines. Little-known lines Cruise Croatia and Sail Vela got surprising traction among luxury voters, and Overseas Adventure Travel got quite a few mentions as a write-in for solo travel.

Hot Spots & Cool Places

In our newest category, African River Ports, many cruisers loved various stops along the Nile, but the lure of Victoria Falls was too great to overcome.

For ocean ports this year, the cruise-friendly Caribbean region was less popular than either the Med, Northern Europe, and Alaska. (This may be a Porthole first!)

Aruba didn’t place first in our Caribbean categories, but notably ranked high for both shopping and beaches. Voters also recognized Puerto Rico and Bermuda as the best ports for history and culture. That cultural category (another surprise) voters found more compelling than either shopping or cuisine this year — though beaches still rule the roost when it comes to a Caribbean vacation.
