    Ship Review: Sweet Victory

by Judi Cuervo September 22, 2025
    written by Judi Cuervo

Victory Cruise Line’s Victory II sits in the shadow of the magnificent Chicago skyline, she and sister ship Victory I the only ships to call the city’s Navy Pier home. In the waters of this popular Lake Michigan attraction, the diminutive 4,954 grt, 190-passenger vessel looks like a behemoth as the myriad sightseeing vessels and pleasure craft glide around her.

But Victory II’s journey to Navy Pier was a challenging one. The U.S.-built red, white, and blue Victory ships debuted in 2001 and sailed under various flags until 2019 when they were acquired by American Queen Steamship Company (later, American Queen Voyages) and sailed as Ocean Navigator and Ocean Voyager.

In 2024, American Queen Voyages’ parent company, Hornblower Group, filed for bankruptcy and it appeared that many of the line’s ships were headed to the scrapyard. AQV founder John Waggoner purchased these two small vessels at a cost of nearly $2 million and in one year launched Victory Cruise Lines to transport guests to all five Great Lakes in a single cruise.

“We repaired both ships,” says Waggoner. “We put in a new engine and control system, along with 20,000 feet of new wiring. We remodeled both ships with 240 curtains, 6,750 square feet of carpet, and 8,904 pieces of china … though we might have broken some so it might be down to 8,000 pieces of china.” An aggressive sales, marketing, and promotion effort was also put in place and partnerships forged with organizations like The National Museum of the Great Lakes in order to elevate the experience of every traveler who steps aboard.

And an elevated experience it is, as the Victory ships sail the Great Lakes and call at ports that include the charming Mackinac Island; Cleveland; Detroit;, Milwaukee; Toronto; and Colborne, Ontario, for Niagara Falls. With Victory Cruise Lines being an almost all-inclusive line, shore excursions that include a boat ride at Niagara Falls, a visit to the fascinating Henry Ford Museum near Detroit, and Cleveland’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame are — like a one-night pre-cruise hotel stay and transfer to the ship, all beverages, unlimited Starlink Wi-Fi, all dining and entertainment, and ship to airport transfer — included in fares. Reasonably priced premium excursions, including a visit to the National Museum of the Great Lakes in Toledo, an immersive experience that showcases the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, and a helicopter flight above Niagara Falls, are available at an additional charge.

    A Friendly Vessel

At first glance, Victory II looks sort of short and chubby, her 200-foot length and 286-foot width a necessity for navigating the conditions of all five Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence Seaway, and the French-Canadian Maritimes. Board her and you’ll find yourself transported back to a nautical era of yesteryear. An ornate wood-fronted purser’s office stands beside an elegant staircase with plush carpeting of royal blue and papered walls that reflect a vintage beige design. A small fitness room and a spa that offers massage, hair, and nail treatments are tucked discreetly nearby. Head to the Compass Lounge for lectures, crafts classes, movie screenings, evening shows, and musical performances beneath the glow of a dazzling chandelier, and to the British-accented The Tavern with its stained-glass rimmed windows, cozy cocktail-table seating, and gleaming woods for drinks and conversation. Victory II’s outside Terrace or Sundeck is the place to be on pleasant days (the ship does not offer a swimming pool), relaxing atop a lounge chair as you sail across inland America.

Victory II’s retro feel continues in your stateroom, with period lamp fixtures illuminating wooden furnishings, decorative molding, and beds adorned with linens that emphasize pattern and texture. All 95 suites and staterooms aboard Victory II are outside ones that range in size from 146 square feet to 185 square feet. Two categories are described as “verandas” but, in fact, it is only the two 335-square-foot Owner’s Suites that include a traditional veranda, while the 161-square-foot Deluxe Stateroom with Veranda includes a seating area/side table positioned directly on the deck outside the door to create more of a “porch-like” feel.

Staterooms, which are serviced twice daily and offer standard USA voltage (110 Volts AC), include flat-screen TV, writing desk with chair, safe, hairdryer, bathrobe and slippers, and small bathroom with a shower stocked with Aveda Rosemary Mint toiletries. Owner’s Suites and Deluxe Outside Staterooms with Veranda also include a stocked mini-fridge.

As a delightful extra, on most nights, you’ll return to your stateroom to find a sweet surprise native to the Great Lakes port you visited that day: a package of Joann’s Fudge, perhaps, or a bag of Garrett Popcorn, or Seroogy’s chocolates. Sure beats a towel animal!

    Winning Dinners

A small ship often means limited dining choices and, often, a single restaurant. Not aboard Victory II! Expect five-course lunches and, at dinner, a choice of three appetizers, two soups, two salads, and up to a staggering seven entrées, each superb in terms of quality, variety, and dazzling presentation. (All dietary restrictions may be addressed on board or you may communicate your needs to your Victory Cruise Advisor prior to sailing.)

Victory II’s chef comes to Victory Cruise Lines from Silversea Cruises, one of the most luxe lines afloat, and it shows with creative and delicious dishes that celebrate local ingredients, and run the gamut from traditional fare like pan-seared scallops and Barolo-braised lamb shanks to more exotic ethnic choices like biang-biang noodles, chana masala, shepherd’s pie, and falafel.

The Coastal Dining Room sets the stage for cooked-to-order breakfasts supplemented by a lavish buffet and those five-course lunches while The Grill is the place to go if you prefer your daytime dining buffet style.

At dinner, the heat is turned up when guests choose between the formal Coastal Dining Room or head to The Grill which, at dinner, is transformed into the reservations-only Tuscan Stone Grill. This steakhouse-style dining experience allows guests to sizzle up their own sumptuous filet mignon atop a scorching-hot 100-percent pure volcanic lava rock — the result, likely the best steak you’ve ever enjoyed. Start the meal with an appetizer like jumbo shrimp cocktail or burrata and tomato salad, indulge in the steak, and top it off with a decadent tiramisu! After dinner, you’ll likely head straight to the Purser’s office to make another reservation at this outstanding venue.

The five Great Lakes and the ports along them may be the stars of Victory Cruise Lines’ 10- to 15-day sailings but the onboard experience plays an equally stellar role. Victory II … she’s a great ship for the Great Lakes!

    By Car and by Badger

by Theresa Russell September 19, 2025
    written by Theresa Russell

Walking through Waterfront Park near the pier, we admired the sculptures commemorating the maritime, agricultural, and lumbering history of the area. From the park, we could see the dilapidated SS Spartan humbly hugging the dock. The sister of Badger, she now provides replacement parts for her sibling. Heading toward the Maritime Museum, we spotted a black dot on the horizon. A few folks gathered in the park facing the channel.

Like a slow zoom, the dot grew larger, billowing black smoke from its funnels. Seeing the docking basin in the channel, much like Miami’s, I wondered how this 1953 boat — one of two moving National Historic Landmarks — would be able to spin around without modern thrusters. So intrigued by this special vessel, we watched it multiple times before boarding, observing arrivals and departures from different vantage points.

    A Michigan Destination

Between viewings, we explored Ludington. We started at the fabulous Maritime Museum, which focuses on Great Lake ferries. Old Michigan maps there showed ferry lines between Michigan, Wisconsin, and Chicago. These ferries once predominantly carried rail cars. (The tracks remain on Badger’s lower deck, but the days of ferrying railcars are gone. She now carries automobiles, trucks, passengers, and most recently, a military tank.)

We visited House of Flavors for ice cream a few times. We strolled through White Pine Village, a living history museum where 30 buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries housed not only period-accurate displays, but also interesting informational exhibits and historic artifacts.

Crossing an expansive dune landscape, we ventured to Ludington State Park right on the lake. The popular 5,300-acre park offers hiking, camping, and a sandy beach under the watchful eye of Big Sable Point Lighthouse.

With several lighthouses in the area, who couldn’t resist walking the long breakwater to the Ludington North Breakwater Lighthouse for a unique viewpoint as the Badger sailed by.

Road Trip by Ship … or Boat

Still coal-powered, Badger is the last remaining steamship on the Great Lakes — famous for its nostalgic charm and practical shortcut across Lake Michigan. Skipping Chicago traffic, it shortens the route from parts of Michigan and Ontario. No….

    Heart of the Arctic

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine September 15, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Squinting in the chilling Arctic wind, I climb out of a small inflatable Zodiac and step onto the wet sand of Disco Island off the west coast of Greenland in Baffin Bay. I trudge up the hill where the rest of my group is already listening to our guide about the dos and don’ts of high-Arctic explorations, which can be summed up as “if you don’t want to be eaten by a polar bear, stay within the designated perimeter.” Everyone agrees that it’s reasonable and we proceed further up, intrigued by the promise of seeing flowers blossoming in the permafrost. When we find them, we buzz with kidlike delight. Who would’ve thought things can bloom here?

Spotting polar bears and flowers are good reasons to be excited, but I have more. I am cruising with Adventure Canada, and Margaret Atwood, the famous Canadian writer, poet, and my favorite author, is trekking up the permafrost too. As a friend of the family that owns Adventure Canada, she had joined their northern voyages fairly regularly over the last few decades. She even wrote a fiction story, “Stone Mattress,” on one of these expeditions, in which main character Verna, a cruise passenger, runs into a man who got away with sexually assaulting her when she was 14 — and settles the score by killing him on an uninhabited Arctic island.

I’ve always wanted to see the Arctic’s majestic beauty, but I wasn’t sure I could brave the elements. Learning that my favorite author, who is in her 80s, would be on the ship sealed the deal.  As a writer who occasionally publishes short stories and has a novel in progress, I’d love to talk to Margaret on authorly topics, but I’m too chicken to strike a conversation. I just hope serendipity will intercede as we keep exploring.

    The Arctic Kaleidoscope

Every moment of our journey is filled with wonder. As we sail up north, we visit the village of Mittimatalik, where we learn about Inuit culture and history, and enjoy a cultural performance which includes throat-singing, a traditional form of Inuit vocal art. Another day, we offload at Beechy Island, tracing the ill-fated expedition led by Sir John Franklin in 1845 that perished mysteriously; traversing the Arctic back then was a dangerous endeavor.

As I get accustomed to the weather, I challenge myself to a kayak adventure in the frigid waters. That requires sealing myself inside a dry suit and climbing into a shifting and bobbing kayak from the Zodiac in the freezing rain. Next, we listen to safety instructions. We’re going to paddle along a beautiful glacier, which means we must watch out for ice that occasionally breaks off and falls into the water, generating no small waves. If that happens, we must quickly position our kayaks facing that wave to avoid capsizing. The prep proves useful — on our way back to the ship, a chunk of ice calves off, plummeting into the sea. Luckily, by then we’re far enough that the wave peters out when it hits us.

Calving ice can pose danger even on land, as we learn on our visit to a Greenland village of Ilulissat. The village sits next to the Ilulissat Glacier, a large ice sheet that regularly generates enormous icebergs, setting off veritable tsunamis. On our hike to the glacier, we pass by a waterfront where a warning sign directs us to keep away from shore to avoid being swept away by an unexpected mega-wave. We heed the warning, wondering what Arctic tsunamis are like.

Later that afternoon, we get to experience a small one in action, as we traverse the Ilulissat Icefjord. Large cruise ships typically don’t navigate the fjord’s relatively shallow waters, and Zodiacs are too little to withstand the calving waves, so we board a midsize boat for the trip. As we sail through the majestic labyrinth of floating white mountains glowing in the sun, the pristine silence is suddenly shattered by a roaring sound, a cross between….

At the same time, we greatly appreciate the loyalty of our passionate guests and the years of dedication many have exhibited in order to achieve higher tiered loyalty status with Carnival Cruise Line. We’ve spent the summer talking with our guests, listening to their comments, and taking in their feedback. As a result, I am happy to share that we are making changes to improve the offering to our most loyal customers as we get ready for the program’s launch in 2026,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “We believe these enhancements recognize our appreciation for the loyalty of our top-tier guests.”

      Key Program Updates:

      • Diamond Status: Guests who reach Diamond in the current VIFP Club® by May 31, 2026, will keep Diamond through May 31, 2032, and also earn lifetime Diamond status in the new Carnival Rewards™ program.
      • Platinum Status: Guests who reach Platinum by May 31, 2026, will keep Platinum through May 31, 2028, and receive a 10,000-star boost every two years starting June 1, 2026. This provides a 20% head start toward Platinum or Diamond in future cycles and guarantees at least Gold status.
      • Children’s Status: While minors cannot enroll directly, they will share the status of their parent/guardian for each sailing. Upon turning 18, those who qualified as Diamond or Platinum by May 31, 2026, can opt in to Carnival Rewards™ with full privileges.
      • International Guests: Carnival is exploring options for Canadian and Australian residents similar to the Carnival Rewards™ Mastercard available in the U.S.

      The Scottish Surprise

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine September 11, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

In February this year, the Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland chose the city of Glasgow to host its award ceremony for the first time in its 125-year history. It was also the first time the GB awards were held outside England, so this was a massive vote of confidence in the city’s vibrant food scene.

      Star struck

If you crave one-star Michelin fine dining, I suggest you head for Cail Bruich in the West End, run by executive chef Lorna McNee. Having previously worked at the two-Michelin-star Restaurant Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles Hotel, she produces well-balanced dishes that use the finest ingredients. The name Cail Bruich means “eat well” in Gaelic, something you can always expect to do here.

Then, head to foodie Finnieston, where Unalome serves up modern European dishes with a Japanese influence. It is run by head chef and owner Graeme Cheevers, who explains that the culinary scene in Glasgow has progressed a lot in the last 10 years. He says, “It’s dynamic, and I love having my restaurant here.”  He has recently opened a second restaurant on the banks of Loch Lomond, called Loma, at Cameron House Hotel.

      Dram fine

No trip to Scotland is complete without whisky. To find a quality dram, take a tasting tour at The Clydeside Distillery. The distillery is owned by Tim Morrison, of Morrison Glasgow Distillers. He is the great-grandson of John Morrison, who back in the 19th century built the Queens’ Dock and Pump House on the River Clyde, where The Clydeside Distillery is now located.

However, if you prefer to experience a traditional Scottish whisky bar, visit the lively Pot Still Whisky Bar on Hope Street. It is run by the Murphy family, who take pride in offering everyone a warm welcome, and they stock more than 1,000 different whiskies to choose from.

      Walk on the wild side

There are many culinary walking tours available, but Glasgow-born chef Steven Halcrow’s Scran & Patter Food Tour offers a true taste of the city’s food scene. He tells the history of the city through its popular dishes. He says, “I always preface every tour by explaining this is not the most refined food you’re ever going to eat in your life, but it’s all good. I show very local, authentic food in places where tourists wouldn’t think to go to.” The three-hour tour costs $115 (£85) including food, drink, and of course, his “banter.” He will introduce you to local delicacies like French fries with cheese and curry sauce, and deep-fried pizza!

      Relaxed dining

This year also saw two new Bib Gourmand establishments announced: Margo, located on Miller Street, where head chef Robin Aitken serves stylish, simple, flavorsome dishes; and Gaga, a Scottish-Malaysian diner on Dumbarton Road, owned by Chef Julie Lin.

They now join the ranks of Celentano’s, an elegant Italian-inspired restaurant with rooms near the Cathedral; the South Asian-infused menu at Ka Pao, near the Botanic Gardens; and Ox and Finch, near Kelvingrove Park, famed for its seasonal small plates.

If you’re looking for slightly less formal foodie offerings, try the unpretentious Gloriosa, situated close to Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. Its head chef and owner, Rosie Healey, explains more about the city’s approach to.…

Today, Holland America Line and RWS Global announced the debut of “Fosse and Verdon, The Duet That Changed Broadway,” a live musical and multimedia tribute to Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon. Developed with The Verdon Fosse Legacy®, this is the first international staging of their work at sea.

Set to premiere this November aboard Holland America Line’s Koningsdam, the production features musical numbers inspired by Fosse’s choreography, along with archival audio and video projected on a 270-degree screen. The show highlights the duo’s contributions from Broadway to film, including Damn Yankees, Sweet Charity, Cabaret, and Chicago. Choreography is reconstructed by The Verdon Fosse Legacy® and staged by Dylis Croman and Alyssa Epstein, accompanied by powerful vocals performing beloved songs from these shows.

“We are incredibly honored to partner with RWS Global to be the first to bring the indelible legacy of Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon to our guests,” said Joe Chantry, vice president of entertainment and enrichment for Holland America Line. “Guests have expressed a strong desire for more Broadway-style productions, and we couldn’t imagine a better way to deliver than by celebrating two legends of the performing arts. The renowned work of Fosse and Verdon has captivated audiences across stage, film and television, and we’re proud to offer this exclusive Holland America Line experience as part of our commitment to world-class entertainment.”

Brilliant Lady Arrives in New York

by Judi Cuervo September 9, 2025
      written by Judi Cuervo

I’m strolling down Ninth Avenue in New York City, on my way to meet a Brilliant Lady.

I refer, of course, to Virgin Voyages’ Brilliant Lady, the newest in the line’s four-ship fleet, which arrived in New York last week for its “MerMaiden” voyage to Bermuda. The 17-deck ship was welcomed to the city by Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson along with the ship’s crew and guests who marked the occasion with a rousing rendition of Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now.”

      The Very First Time

It has taken me eight years to find my way on to a Virgin Voyages ship but I clearly recall the promotional events that preceded the line’s launch. I remember talk of “rebellious twists,” a revolutionary overhaul of traditional cruise-ship dining, a tattoo parlor at sea, drag shows, and complimentary extras like fitness classes, Wi-Fi, gratuities, and basic beverages. And, with no children aboard, we could expect things to get slightly naughty — like an ice cream spot named Lick Me Til Ice Scream.

Now, as I stand at Pier 90 in New York and gaze up at the 110,000 grt ship, her gray bow calls to mind a battleship. But, okay, I should expect the unexpected from a line that, from the very start, was determined to avoid contracting any firm that routinely designed cruise ships.

NYC Ship Terminal | Phoot: Judi Cuervo

The Virgin Voyages difference is evident from the second I enter the terminal. Instead of the almost industrial surroundings I’m used to, I find an assortment of purple loveseats and end tables topped with floral arrangements. A red curtain hides the rather lackluster path to the gangway and a DJ is at her booth, popular songs blaring through speakers to remind us that we can trace Virgin Voyages back to Branson’s musical origins and artists like the Rolling Stones, the Sex Pistols, the Spice Girls, and more.

Sadly, I will not be aboard Brilliant Lady as she sails to Bermuda tomorrow and am here only to explore the ship for a few hours, enjoy some of its entertainment, and dine at the new Spanish-inspired restaurant Rojo.

Rojo-Jamon Croquettes | Photo: Judi Cuervo

It seems that most of my fellow sailors (are we considered “sailors” even if we’re simply visiting the ship for a few hours?) have sailed Virgin Voyages before. The point of this event is to showcase the differences in the purpose-built Brilliant Lady and her sister ships Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady, and Resilient Lady. The differences are inspired by Brilliant Lady’s upcoming itineraries that will include breathtaking scenery, cold weather, and navigation of the Panama Canal. As a Virgin virgin, I find myself a little lost when it comes to design changes yet absorb my tour guide’s passionate rap and decide I’ll ignore that whole “changes” thing.

      Shiny and New

Brilliant Lady is narrower than her sisters, an adjustment required for her to pass through the Panama Canal en route to the Pacific. Lifeboats had to be brought in which resulted in the creation of a new category of accommodations: The (Slightly) Smaller Balcony Sea Terrace. And while this move reduces the size of balconies in the category from 40 feet to between 9 and 11 feet, sailors are compensated with not one, but two signature red hammocks to relax in — something that only the largest suites had offered.

Like other Virgin Voyages ships, the social heart of Brilliant Lady is The Roundabout, an open and functional two-level space connected by a dramatic staircase. Cozy seating in a riot of reds and purples invites conversation while the nearby Draught House offers libations that range from cocktails, beers, wines, and—new for cold-weather destinations–coffees. This space, I’m told, has been “reimagined,” with windows that allow sailors to view the stunning vistas along the Alaskan and Canadian coasts. In fact, all throughout the ship, viewing lines and outdoor spaces have been expanded, including those at the ship’s Athletic Club. And, aboard Brilliant Lady, the traditionally outdoor Scarlet Night party becomes the Scarlet Night Red Room Glow Up to offer a high-energy indoor option for chilly nights.

Duel Reality | Photo: Judi Cuervo

A few hours is not nearly enough to absorb the magnificence of Brilliant Lady but I try my best, joining my little group as they view two of the most extravagant suites on the ship: the Massive Suite and the Posh Suite, plush terry robes embroidered with “Rock Star” hanging outside the lavish bathrooms, a collection of guitars lining the wall of the Massive Suite and a vinyl record player with a stack of LPs in the living area. I stroll the pulsing casino, am dazzled by the electrifying entry to The Manor Room, and window-shop the ship’s expansive, 5,500-square-foot retail space, salivating over the fashion, beauty, and fine jewelry options. At 6:15 p.m., I attend Duel Reality, a signature Virgin Voyages production that I find to be a rather bizarre acrobatic combination of a love story, schoolyard brawl, and urban Cirque du Soleil. I prefer the jazz trio that’s tucked into a corner near The Roundabout.

      Feel Your Heartbeat

While a tattoo parlor, drag show and risque signage might set Brilliant Lady apart from the traditional cruise ship, Virgin Voyages has triggered a true revolution in dining! You won’t find a main restaurant aboard Brilliant Lady but, instead, 20 complimentary dining venues (some requiring reservations) that range from the casual Pizza Place to the more extravagant steak and seafood spot, The Wake. And instead of a tired buffet, Brilliant Lady offers The Galley, an all-day dining spot with a variety of stations serving up delectable dishes … à la minute. That’s right! All of the dining aboard Brilliant Lady is cooked to order, rather than in mass quantities.

Oddly, Brilliant Lady doesn’t offer any “drinks packages,” but does offer something better: The Bar Tab. Pre-purchase your Bar Tab and you’ll receive additional credit free of charge. Unlike most ships’ beverage-package schemes, there’s no need for your travel companion to purchase a Bar Tab and your tab may be used to buy others a drink as well.

On this brilliant evening, it seems as though Brilliant Lady just may have saved the best for last: a lavish, Spanish-inspired dinner at Rojo by Razzle Dazzle, Virgin Voyages’ newest dining concept. In a relaxed setting of neutral tones and polished woods, we share delectable small plates like crispy jamon croquettes with their silky and cheesy interior, tender grilled octopus, and roasted cauliflower Catalan before indulging in our choice of mains like tender baby back pork ribs in harissa honey, arctic char, or a superb grilled ribeye served alongside chorizo piperade. All accompanied by a delightful rioja wine, of course. For dessert, I choose chocolate-dipped churros. Olé!

During my short time aboard Virgin Voyages’ newest ship, I might not have had an opportunity to experience all of its magical features, its dazzling public spaces, or its vast entertainment offerings but the little I did see is more than enough to convince me that this is certainly one Brilliant Lady.
