MSC Group Marks Shore Power Milestone in Valletta

by Julie Bouchner October 17, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

MSC Group’s Cruise Division took another major step toward decarbonization as MSC World Europa and EXPLORA II connected to shore power at Valletta’s Grand Harbour on October 15 and 16, 2025.

MORE ABOUT THE EVENT

The event, attended by Malta’s Prime Minister Dr. Robert Abela and senior government officials, underscored the company’s commitment to cleaner port operations. The back-to-back connections marked a first for the Group, with EXPLORA II becoming Explora Journeys’ first ship to connect to shore-side electricity in Europe.

Prime Minister of Malta, Dr Robert Abela, commented: “Our collaboration with global partners such as MSC Group shows how Malta can combine economic growth with environmental progress. The shore-power system at the Grand Harbour is a national investment in cleaner air, quieter communities, and sustainable tourism. It is encouraging to see international cruise operators like MSC actively using the facility and helping us set an example for the Mediterranean region.”

Since Valletta’s shore power facility opened in 2024—when MSC World Europa became the first vessel to use it—MSC Cruises’ ships have logged around 300 hours connected to shore power, reducing emissions equivalent to half a month of traditional port operations.

The milestone coincided with the GreenPort Congress 20th Anniversary & Decarbonising the Future Conference 2025, reinforcing Malta’s role in advancing the EU’s Fit for 55 plan, which requires all major European ports to offer shore power by 2030.

Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Group’s Cruise Division, added: “These connections show how technology, investment, and partnership can deliver immediate environmental benefits. Malta was the first Mediterranean port to make shore power operational, and together we’re proving that sustainable infrastructure can support both environmental goals and the growth of cruise tourism. We thank the Maltese Government for their continued support and are proud to mark this milestone together.”

All MSC Cruises ships built since 2017 are equipped with shore power capability, and retrofitting continues across the fleet. Today, 18 of the Cruise Division’s 25 vessels can connect to shore-side electricity, with additional installations underway.

In 2024, MSC Cruises connected to shore power in 13 ports, completing 142 successful connections—more than triple the previous year.

MSC Group continues to expand shore power connections across its fleet and ports worldwide to further reduce emissions in port.

The Suite Life Of Resorts World Bimini

by Steve Leland October 16, 2025
written by Steve Leland

Having lived 40 years in South Florida, surrounded by some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, I considered myself a connoisseur of coastal living. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that just 50 miles offshore, there was a little sliver of paradise in the Bahamas called Resorts World Bimini that made all my usual island getaways feel like warm-up acts.

This property is far more than a resort: it is a mood, with a well-crafted vibe that provides an excuse to relax and chill. I completely ignored the gym, no matter how shiny and high-tech it looked. Spa robes are more my workout aesthetic anyway, and the sanctuary of the resort’s Serenity Spa with ocean-infused treatments felt far more restorative. And while others hit the casino with gleaming eyes and poker faces, I opted for a safer bet: a tropical cocktail by the rooftop pool.

Shopping? Not my thing. But somehow, browsing through the charming little shops in the adjacent Fisherman’s Village didn’t feel like a chore, it felt like discovery. And when someone suggested the ever-popular deep-sea fishing, I nodded politely and went back to relaxing in my private beach cabana. I didn’t come here to wrestle marlin. I came here to breathe.

Beach Time | Photo: Steve Leland

While the resort’s deluxe suites and amenities offer plenty to impress, nothing rivals the magnetic pull of its private Bimini Beach complex. This is pure island chic, with an expansive pool lined with sleek loungers and umbrellas, a DJ spinning the perfect soundtrack, and an endless stretch of white sand that dissolves into crystalline turquoise waters. Every scene could be the cover shot of a dream escape.

Guests of the resort enjoy complimentary access to the beach club, while visitors arriving by cruise ship can purchase day passes to join the fun. But those sailing aboard a Virgin Voyages ship are especially lucky — they’re treated to exclusive complimentary access, complete with a sumptuous buffet lunch overlooking the sea.

Lunch at Bimini Beach Club | Photo: Steve Leland

What’s Cooking

Whether you’re sipping a signature rum cocktail beneath the palms or wading into the calm shallows, time seems to slow to the rhythm of the island. Attentive beach attendants appear just when you need a refill, while the aroma of fresh-grilled seafood drifts from the open-air Beach 360 restaurant. Sampling fresh lobster rolls, sweet sticky ribs, piri-piri chicken, or crispy fried whole snapper was the perfect version of beachside dining.

Back in the main building, guests can enjoy breakfast and dinner at The Tides Restaurant, where local specialties take center stage. Who wouldn’t appreciate Asian fusion all rolled up at The Sushi Bar.  For a more relaxed dining experience, Hemingway’s offers comfort classics with Bahamian twists.

Taking It To The Streets

Bimini couldn’t be more different from the often-hectic streets of Nassau. This laid-back and charming island has just one main road, making it nearly impossible to get lost. While a few cars can be spotted, the golf cart is the vehicle of choice here. We rented one from the resort and spent our mornings exploring the neighborhoods of Whispering Pines, Bailey Town, and Alice Town.

Wandering along the coastal road, we stopped to sample classic Bahamian conch salad from a roadside vendor. A quick detour to an unassuming local bakery led us to pick up a warm, freshly baked loaf of Bimini bread. Though we had planned to bring it home as a gift, our good intentions didn’t survive past midday—it was gone before lunch.

Getting to the islands requires some advance planning but the journey is a breeze. Baleària operates ferry service between Fort Lauderdale and Bimini on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with a quick two-hour crossing that delivers guests directly to a private pier owned and operated by Resorts World Bimini. For those who prefer to fly, American Airlines will launch new service from Miami in early 2026.

At Resorts World Bimini, island life felt effortless yet elevated. The atmosphere shifts from Florida chic to elegance with a barefoot soul. Sometimes, the most surprising journeys aren’t far-flung. They’re just waiting quietly nearby, asking only that you slow down, show up, and see them with fresh eyes. It’s this kind of fun-filled island experience that will keep the stay at Resorts World Bimini etched in memory long after the tan has faded.

Electric Seaplanes Take Flight

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine October 15, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Regent Craft and UrbanLink Air Mobility have just built a more convenient and connected future for coastal communities by launching a fleet of all-electric seagliders.

Urban Link, the Florida-based air and maritime mobility company, has upped its orders of seagliders from 27 to 47 from the manufacturer, Regent Craft.

By 2027, the versatile air-and-sea vehicles could be able to carry up to 4.3 million passengers a year over some of the most heavily trafficked short-haul routes in the United States, replacing trains and cars with faster, cleaner transportation.

This milestone marks one of the largest commercial seaglider orders to date and underscores UrbanLink’s confidence in Regent’s breakthrough technology.

After a two-week drydock in Portland, Oregon, Sapphire Princess has returned to service with refreshed spaces and two new specialty restaurants—Makoto Ocean and Crown Grill—opening November 16, 2025.

The 115,875-ton ship, accommodating 2,670 guests, received general refurbishments and venue transformations to introduce these dining experiences.

The restaurant features Chef Makoto Okuwa’s Edomae-style sushi with dishes like truffle salmon, snow crab temaki, and toro tartare. Signature cocktails include the Genmai Negroni and Kodai No Hana, blending yuzu juice with Doburoku, an ancient sake.

Crown Grill Steakhouse

Crown Grill now occupies the former Savoy Dining Room on Deck 5. A Princess favorite, it serves premium aged beef, chops, and seafood in an elegant setting and is recognized as one of the Best Cruise Ship Steakhouses at Sea.

Both restaurants are priced at $60 per person and included as specialty dining options for Princess Premier guests.

Upcoming Itineraries

Following her updates, Sapphire Princess will sail to Mexico, then reposition for a South America/Antarctica season, followed by Mediterranean and Northern Europe voyages in spring and summer 2026. In fall 2026, she will offer Canada/New England sailings.

written by Julie Bouchner

Oceania Cruises has named Food & Wine’s Best New Chefs as the official godparents of its newest ship, Oceania Allura. The ship, which debuted in July 2025, will be officially christened in Miami on November 13—marking the first time a culinary brand, rather than an individual, has taken on this prestigious role.

Food & Wine Best New Chefs alumni Tavel Bristol-Joseph, Katie Button, Calvin Eng, Aisha Ibrahim, George Mendes, and Lawrence “LT” Smith will lead the christening, breaking a Champagne bottle across the bow to bless the ship and its passengers.

“At Oceania Cruises, our ships are a celebration of rich culture, exceptional cuisine, and global discovery, and Oceania Allura is no exception,” said Jason Montague, Chief Luxury Officer of Oceania Cruises. “Honoring the Food & Wine Best New Chefs program and having its alumni serve as godparents reflects our belief that food lies at the heart of global exploration. These visionary chefs embody the spirit of culinary excellence, and we are thrilled to welcome them to the Oceania Cruises family.”

About Food & Wine Best New Chefs

  • Since 1988, the program has celebrated nearly 400 rising culinary stars.

  • For the first time, the franchise itself will serve as godparent of Oceania Allura, with alumni chefs leading the christening.

  • These chefs showcase the program’s legacy of innovation while supporting Oceania Cruises’ commitment to exceptional culinary experiences at sea.

“For nearly four decades, Food & Wine Best New Chefs have shaped dining in America and inspired the way we experience food,” said Tom Bair, Publisher of Food & Wine. “We’re thrilled to celebrate this legacy with Oceania Cruises, a partner that shares our passion for extraordinary cuisine and discovery, and to mark this milestone christening where food is every bit as memorable as the destinations.”

About Oceania Allura

  • Oceania Allura accommodates 1,200 guests and pairs immersive destinations with The Finest Cuisine at Sea®.

  • Signature features include the Grand Dining Room, a professional-grade Culinary Center with Chef’s Studio, and the returning French restaurant Jacques.

  • The ship offers twelve dining venues, including four always-complimentary specialty restaurants: Jacques, pan-Asian Red Ginger, Italian Toscana, and the steakhouse Polo Grill.

  • New to the brand is the Crêperie, serving French crêpes, Belgian and bubble waffles, and Italian ice cream sundaes.

  • Oceania Allura maintains an exceptional chef-to-guest ratio of 1:8, with half the crew dedicated to culinary operations.

This partnership highlights Oceania Cruises’ dedication to the impact of chefs on luxury travel. In August 2023, Food & Wine Best New Chefs alumni Aisha Ibrahim led the line’s inaugural Best New Chefs Cruise in Alaska, offering exclusive menus, live cooking demonstrations, and curated pairing experiences. By naming the Best New Chefs franchise as godparent, Oceania Cruises reinforces its commitment to extraordinary culinary journeys at sea.

Food & Wine Best New Chefs Alumni Serving as Godparents

  • Katie Button (2015 F&W BNC) – Chef and founder of Asheville’s Cúrate restaurant group; five-time James Beard nominee, cookbook author, and host of From the Source on Magnolia Network. She champions equitable and sustainable hospitality practices.

The Scenic Group has marked another milestone in river cruising with the float-out of Emerald Astra, the newest Emerald Star-Ship, at its shipyard in Turnu Severin, Romania, on September 30, 2025.

Set to redefine modern river cruising, Emerald Astra will feature a fresh design, innovative amenities, and elevated comforts throughout. Guests can expect art installations in collaboration with leading European galleries and luxury design partnerships with Missoni and Freifrau. Suites and staterooms will feature ESPA toiletries, premium European linens, and select Missoni furnishings.

Among the ship’s firsts are complimentary guest laundry facilities—soon to be added across the European fleet—and a redesigned Sun Deck with new furniture and open-air spaces that maximize views. Following Emerald Astra’s debut, Emerald Lumi will join the fleet on the River Seine in 2027, continuing this new design direction.

Fleetwide Enhancements

Scenic Group continues to update its fleets each season to maintain a modern onboard experience. Upcoming upgrades for Scenic Space-Ships include refreshed suite designs, premium bedding, and enhanced top-deck areas. Across the Emerald Cruises river fleet, updates extend to pool areas and continued collaborations with Missoni and Freifrau—ensuring the refined aesthetic of Emerald Astra carries throughout the brand.

Toni Day named Godmother

Ahead of her inaugural Danube sailing in May 2026, Emerald Cruises has named respected U.S. first responder and travel advisor Toni Day as Godmother of Emerald Astra. The christening ceremony will take place in Amsterdam in May 2026, marking a key moment in Scenic Group’s continued expansion.

“Toni embodies the passion, dedication, and resilience that define the very best of the travel industry,” said Ken Muskat, President, Scenic Group USA/LATAM. “Her service as a first responder and her leadership as a travel adviser have touched countless lives. We are deeply honoured to welcome her as Godmother of Emerald Astra and to celebrate her as part of the Scenic Group family.”

MORE ABOUT DAY

Before launching her travel career, Toni spent more than 25 years with the New York City Fire Department, rising to the rank of EMS Deputy Chief. She served at Ground Zero during the Rescue and Recovery phase following the September 11 attacks—an experience that continues to inspire her commitment to service and community.

In 2004, she founded Toni Tours, Inc., a boutique agency specializing in luxury ocean and river cruises. Over four decades, she has become one of Scenic Group’s top global sellers, creating her signature “Adventures with Toni Tours” journeys and visiting over 120 countries. Toni is a Special Event Coordinator for the North Florida ASTA Chapter and has earned honors including ASTA’s Barbara O’Hara Advocacy Award and Nexion’s Circle of Excellence for three consecutive years.

“It is an incredible honour to be named Godmother of Emerald Astra, especially since Astra is a word of Latin and Greek origin meaning stars. Throughout my life, I’ve always believed in reaching for the stars, whether serving my community or helping travellers discover the world,” said Toni. “Emerald Astra represents that same spirit of resilience, hope and adventure, and I am truly honoured to be named her Godmother.”

written by Julie Bouchner

Oceania Cruises celebrated the return of its signature French restaurant, Jacques, aboard its newest ship, Oceania Allura™, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by the restaurant’s namesake and the line’s founding Executive Culinary Director, Chef Jacques Pépin.

While docked in Boston on October 6, the line honored Chef Pépin with a ceremonial opening and luncheon. He shared heartfelt remarks before cutting the ribbon alongside his family—Claudine Pépin, Rollie Wesen, and Shorey Wesen—and longtime colleague Chef Eric Barale, Oceania Cruises’ Executive Culinary Director and Master Chef of France.

“We first debuted Jacques 14 years ago aboard Oceania Marina, and the following year on Oceania Riviera, and I am delighted to see this wonderful iteration of our much-loved culinary venue aboard our newest ship, Oceania Allura, and her sister ship, Oceania Vista,” said Chef Pépin. “Oceania Cruises has built a legacy of culinary excellence, integrity, and creativity, culminating in this new chapter of Jacques we are celebrating today. It is a proud and deeply humbling moment to share with cherished friends, family, and colleagues, many of whom I have worked with since the inception of Oceania Cruises.”

The refreshed Jacques menu combines new flavors with beloved classics, featuring dishes such as duck à l’orange with Grand Marnier, veal medallions with morel sauce, and timeless desserts like Crêpes Suzette and profiteroles.

New additions include deviled eggs topped with smoked trout rillette and sturgeon caviar, as well as tableside preparations of beef tartare and sea bass en croûte for two.

“Chef Alexis Quaretti and I are honored to continue Chef Pépin’s legacy,” said Executive Culinary Director Chef Eric Barale. “As Oceania Cruises’ first executive culinary director, he set the standard of excellence that continues to guide our chefs across the fleet. He not only embodies our philosophy of serving The Finest Cuisine at Sea®, he’s the inspiration behind it.”

What Makes Oceania Allura So Extraordinary

by Bill Panoff October 6, 2025
written by Bill Panoff

We didn’t realize how much we needed this trip until we were standing on the deck of Oceania Allura, watching the sun set over the Adriatic.

This wasn’t a “check-the-boxes” kind of cruise. It was slow mornings, long dinners, quiet corners, and small towns that felt like hidden gems — Rijeka, Opatija, Brisighella. Each stop brought something different, but the feeling was the same: relaxed, unhurried, and real.

Onboard, Oceania Allura was everything we’d hoped for — elegant, calm, and just the right size to feel personal. From the food (yes, we’re still thinking about it) to the small details in service and design, everything came together in a way that made us slow down and actually enjoy the moment.

If you’re thinking about cruising the Adriatic — or just need a little escape — check out our latest travel show below.
