Beat the Heat at Sea with a Summer Cruise

by Porthole Cruise and Travel May 28, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Summer can be very hot and uncomfortable. A summer cruise provides an opportunity to enjoy the season without enduring the heat all the time. Whether you are traveling with family or as a couple, a cruise gives you options to stay cool and enjoy your trip. Here are five reasons why a summer cruise is a smart way to beat the heat.

1. Water Activities for All Ages

Action Sports And Activities On A Royal Caribbean Cruise | Royal Caribbean Blog

Cruise ships have pools, water parks, and splash areas where kids can play safely. Adults can swim, relax by the pool, or try water sports like snorkeling or kayaking at port stops. Being near water helps you stay cool throughout the day.

2. Air Conditioning Everywhere You Go

Ships are fully air-conditioned. Your cabin, restaurants, theaters, and lounges all have climate control. If the sun gets too strong, you can step inside and stay comfortable without missing any activities or meals.

3. Entertainment for Families and Couples

Photo: NCL

There are activities and clubs for kids of all ages, allowing families to find ways to keep everyone busy and happy. Couples can choose quiet spots, such as spas or adult-only pools, or enjoy dinners in serene dining rooms. Both groups have options to relax indoors away from the heat.

4. Visit Cooler, Shady Places

Many summer cruises stop at destinations with natural shade, such as forests, parks, or breezy coastal towns. These places offer outdoor activities where you can stay out of direct sunlight. Walking tours, hikes in shaded areas, or visits to caves provide ways to explore without overheating.

5. Flexible Daily Schedule

Cruise schedules let you plan your day to avoid the hottest hours. You can sleep late, have breakfast inside, take a nap during midday, and then head out in the cooler mornings or evenings. This helps you avoid the peak heat and still enjoy all that the cruise has to offer.

A summer cruise provides water access, air-conditioned spaces, entertainment, cool destinations, and flexible timing. It’s an easy way to enjoy summer without being uncomfortable in the heat. If you want a vacation that keeps you cool and entertained, a summer cruise is a smart choice.

5 Must-Have Wellness Items for Travel

by Porthole Cruise and Travel May 21, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Looking for the perfect summer travel essentials or thoughtful gifts? Whether you’re cruising, heading on a sunny getaway, or just looking to treat yourself, these five wellness must-haves are made for travel. Each one is practical, compact, and designed to help you feel better, sleep deeper, and unwind faster—wherever summer takes you.

1. Red Light Therapy Masks by Omnilux

The Omnilux Contour Face and Contour Neck & Décolleté masks

The Omnilux Contour Face and Contour Neck & Décolleté masks are innovative, travel-ready skincare tools designed to keep your skin looking its best wherever you go. The Contour Face mask, especially popular among women, uses advanced red and near-infrared light technology to address a range of skin concerns—including fine lines, dark spots, uneven texture, and sun damage. With just a few 10-minute sessions each week, it helps boost collagen, calm redness, and visibly rejuvenate tired skin—no downtime required.

Complementing it perfectly, the Contour Neck & Décolleté mask targets the delicate skin below the face, often overlooked but just as prone to aging and environmental stress. It smooths, hydrates, and helps minimize signs of aging like creases and discoloration, making it ideal for restoring this sensitive area after a long day in the sun or on the go.

Lightweight, cordless, and effortless to use, both masks are perfect for your travel routine—whether you’re unwinding in a hotel or relaxing on a cruise. Just sit back, let the red light work its magic, and enjoy refreshed, radiant skin wherever your adventures take you.

Explore these two red light masks, as well as their other offerings, here.

2. A Journal for Mindfulness Anywhere

A well-designed journal is perfect for quiet mornings, long flights, or relaxing on the cruise deck. It’s nice to pull it out mid-flight or by the pool to reflect on your day, plan your next adventure, or jot down memories. Journaling is a simple habit that brings focus and calm, helping clear your mind and reduce stress, no matter where you are. Compact and lightweight, it’s easy to carry and an essential tool for mindfulness while traveling. You can find a journal at bookstores, on Amazon, or wherever you shop for travel essentials.

You can find a nice quality journal at your local bookstore, Target, and Amazon!

3. Kindle or a Good Book

520+ Cruise Tablet Stock Photos, Pictures & Royalty-Free Images - iStock

Whether lounging by the pool or curled up in your stateroom, a Kindle is the perfect travel companion for book lovers. It offers access to thousands of titles without the bulk of physical books, so you can easily carry an entire library in your bag. The Kindle’s lightweight, waterproof design makes it ideal for reading poolside or in the spa, allowing you to dive into your next adventure or escape into fiction while you unwind.

For those who prefer the feel of a physical book, consider packing a favorite novel or a wellness-focused read. A thoughtfully chosen book can be the perfect gift for someone special, especially if you include a personal note on the cover. Whether it’s a calming self-help book, an inspirational story, or a thrilling page-turner, a book is an easy way to gift calm, inspiration, and a meaningful escape during travel.

4. Noise-Canceling Headphones

Whether you’re trying to nap on a plane, rest in a noisy hotel, or unwind in your cruise cabin, high-quality noise-canceling earplugs can make all the difference. Unlike basic foam options, newer designs use soft silicone and acoustic filtering to reduce ambient noise while allowing you to hear essential sounds, like your boarding call or a knock at the door.

They’re perfect for:

  • Flights, trains, or busy terminals

  • Shared spaces like cruise rooms or guesthouses

  • Getting better sleep in unfamiliar environments

Compact, reusable, and easy to stash in your bag, these earplugs are a small luxury that can vastly improve how you rest and recharge while traveling.

5. Essential Oil Roller for Instant Calm

Natural oils Stock Photos, Royalty Free Natural oils Images | Depositphotos

Compact and TSA-approved, essential oil rollers are a travel-friendly way to bring relaxation and balance. These portable rollers fit easily into your bag or carry-on and are ideal for easing nerves, refreshing your mood, or settling into sleep. Look for blends that include calming ingredients like lavender, chamomile, or citrus—each offering its own benefits for stress relief, mental clarity, and relaxation.

Essential oil rollers are perfect for:

  • Flights and layovers: Apply before takeoff or during turbulence to calm your nerves and promote relaxation.
  • Social events or excursions: A quick swipe on your pulse points can help you feel centered and confident before meetings or group activities.
  • Nightly wind-down routines: Use the roller before bed to create a calming atmosphere, helping you relax and ease into sleep.
  • Creating a spa-like feel anywhere: Whether in a hotel room, cruise cabin, or vacation home, these rollers instantly transform any space into a soothing retreat.

Lightweight and easy to use, essential oil rollers are a simple yet effective way to maintain your wellness while traveling.

These five travel-friendly wellness gifts are thoughtful, helpful, and easy to love—whether you’re giving them or bringing them along. This season, take care of yourself and those around you with small tools that make a big impact.

Travel well. Rest often. Bring wellness with you.

Green-Star Gourmets

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine May 20, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Discerning diners know about the prestigious Michelin Star, bestowed upon restaurants that satisfy the high gourmet requisites of the Michelin Guide. But there’s a lesser-known award, also presented by Michelin, that honors food that meets those high culinary standards, and does it in an eco-friendly way: the Green Michelin Star.

The Green Star considers a variety of factors such as the origin and seasonality of ingredients, the use of resources, and the promotion of environmental awareness among diners.

“We wanted to give more visibility to restaurateurs who focus on sustainability and recognize them for their efforts,” says a Michelin Guide director.

A Taste of Trani

by Jon Fleming May 19, 2025
written by Jon Fleming

As you walk around Trani’s stunning, sparkling harbor, with the weathered fishermen fixing their nets in the shadow of a monumental Romanesque cathedral, something tells you that this town is going to be special. But you might not expect this unheralded town of 50,000 people to have developed such a sophisticated food scene that’s out of all proportion to its size.

However, if you were to put together a list of ingredients for a foodie mecca, then Trani seems to have it all. It’s in Puglia, Italy’s deep south, about half an hour north of the cruise port of Bari. The presence of so many fishing boats in that harbor ensures that there’s a ready supply of the freshest seafood from the Adriatic. Puglia’s omnipresent olive groves produce large quantities of the highest quality olive oil. This little town can also boast six small-scale manufacturers of mozzarella cheese … and the neighboring (but little-known) Castel del Monte region produces some really excellent, and affordable, wines.

To add to this, in the last decade Trani’s restaurant scene has gone from strength to strength, as three of its restaurants have gained Michelin stars, and a “virtuous circle” has developed, pushing up standards across the board, so that even the most unassuming restaurants produce imaginative tasting menus.

Trani’s Top Trio

Three top-class establishments vie for the title of Trani’s premier restaurant. Specializing in seafood, Le Lampare al Fortino is situated in an ancient fortress guarding the entrance to Trani’s harbor. It first gained a Michelin star in 2017, and offers opulent tasting menus starting at €100 ($108).

Further along the coast, Casa Sgarra, run by three brothers, offers another fine dining experience, with a four-course tasting menu starting at €90 ($97). It gained its Michelin Star in 2021, being rated as a “modern, elegant restaurant”, and, as ever in Trani, the service is truly excellent.

Keeping up the theme of family businesses, a personal favorite is the superb Quintessenza, housed in a stylishly refurbished white-stone palazzo overlooking Trani’s magnificent medieval castle. It gained its Michelin Star in 2016. Here, the four Di Gennaro brothers put an incredible level of detail into producing innovative takes on.…

BYGDØY DAY

by Richard Varr May 16, 2025
written by Richard Varr

Rope ladders rise up the towering masts with their sails smartly wrapped, seemingly ready to be hoisted for a new adventure. Below deck, dining tables are set, axes and saws hang in workshops, and there’s even a piano to soothe the loneliness of months at sea. I’m walking aboard the more than 130-year-old Fram, one of the world’s most famous polar ships, a vessel with the distinction of sailing farther north and south than any other. And it is not the only record-breaking ship I’m seeing today.

I’m spending the day on Oslo’s Bygdøy Peninsula, just a short ferry ride across the Oslofjord from the city’s tourist-packed central harbor and the Aker Brygge commercial development (where you can find the esteemed Nobel Peace Center and Norwegian National Museum). Bygdøy’s draw, however, is its four maritime-themed museums — each a testament to Norway’s passion for exploration and courage on the high seas, spanning from the Viking Age to modern-day sailors and fishermen.

Amundsen’s Antarctic and Fears of Freezing

The waterfront Fram Museum — its unusual triangular shape sized perfectly to house the polar vessel — has repeatedly been listed as one of Norway’s best museums. National hero Roald Amundsen commanded Fram’s third voyage to become the first arctic explorer to reach the South Pole in 1911. Although built of wood, the ship’s brilliant design withstood the pressure of shifting and crushing polar ice.

“The secret was the round hull,” explains museum Director Geir Kløver. “Traditional sailing ships at the time had straight hulls on the side going down to the keel. If you take a wine bottle and press two books against the bottle, it will be lifted. A completely round hull will be lifted on top of the ice instead of crushed.”

Museum exhibits showcase dog teams hauling overstuffed sleds from shore to the South Pole and how crews prepared for the journey — sewing tents, packing skis, and caring for the animals. In another, similarly shaped building, the museum houses a second ship, the Gjøa, which also sailed into the history books. The sloop commanded by Amundsen before his Fram voyage was the first ship to successfully navigate the Northwest Passage from 1903 to 1906.

Yet I find the museum’s cold room exhibit particularly astonishing when walking through its minus 12 Celsius (10.4 degrees Fahrenheit) temperature in balmy July. In makeshift cabins, two lifelike sailor figures lie in bunks, seemingly freezing to death. “The room portrays a polar expedition that went terribly wrong. Ice is coming through the walls and the men have severe scurvy,” notes Kløver. “Many visiting the museum wearing t-shirts and shorts in summer don’t really know what cold is. Minus 12 Celsius is nothing. These guys were in minus 40 and minus 50 degrees.”

Norwegian Adventurers in the South Pacific

Next to the Fram Museum, the Kon-Tiki Museum showcases quite a different adventure, though no less daring. It houses Kon-Tiki, a hand-built balsa-wood raft on which Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl and his intrepid crew of five sailed 8,000 kilometers (4,970 miles) from Peru to the ….

written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Norwegian Cruise Line has released new images of Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Bliss following recent dry docks, showcasing ship enhancements ahead of the 2025 summer season.

This summer, NCL is offering cruises to Alaska, Europe, the Caribbean, and Bermuda on newly upgraded and new ships.

“In preparation for the summer season, we’ve invested in updated ships to give guests more to enjoy and greater value across top destinations,” said David J. Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line. “Cruising offers a hassle-free way to see multiple places in one trip—whether it’s Alaska, Europe, or the Caribbean, there’s an NCL vacation for every traveler.”

Three Upgraded Ships Sail to Alaska

Through October 2025, NCL will operate five ships in Alaska—its youngest fleet in the region—departing from Seattle and Vancouver. Three of these, Norwegian Bliss, Encore, and Joy, were purpose-built for Alaska cruising and feature panoramic lounges and The Waterfront, an outdoor promenade with dining and lounges.

Bliss now features Horizon Park, an outdoor space with games and loungers. Encore and Joy include new amenities from recent dry docks, such as the Spice H2O adults-only area and an expanded Thermal Suite in the Mandara Spa.

NCL also offers the most sailings from Seattle this summer, with round-trip seven-day cruises on Bliss and Encore, and nine- and ten-day options on Joy. Stops include Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, Sitka, Victoria (B.C.), and Icy Strait Point. Guests can extend their trip with Cruisetours that include Denali National Park and Fairbanks.

Explore Europe on New and Refreshed Ships

This summer, NCL offers over 150 European itineraries across eight ships, including the newly upgraded Breakaway and Epic, and two of its newest vessels, Prima and Viva. These port-intensive cruises feature minimal sea days and extended time in port.

Breakaway, sailing the Mediterranean, debuts the Silver Screen Bistro and Horizon Park. Epic, fresh from dry dock in May 2025, now includes a larger Kids’ Aqua Park and an expanded Vibe Beach Club. Both sail 9- to 12-day itineraries from Rome, Barcelona, and Trieste, visiting cities such as Florence, Messina, and Greek isles like Santorini and Mykonos.

Prima and Viva offer cruises through Northern Europe and the Baltics, with stops in Copenhagen, Helsinki, Stockholm, Berlin, Amsterdam, and Bruges.

New Ship Norwegian Aqua Sails Caribbean and Bermuda

NCL’s newest ship, Norwegian Aqua, is offering round-trip Caribbean cruises from Port Canaveral this summer. From August to October 2025, the ship will also sail five- and seven-day Bermuda cruises from New York. Starting in October, Aqua will begin a series of seven-day Eastern Caribbean cruises from Miami through April 2026, visiting Puerto Plata, St. Thomas, Tortola, and Great Stirrup Cay—NCL’s private island, which will debut new amenities in late 2025, including a pier, heated pool, and swim-up bar.

Additional Bermuda cruises are available on Norwegian Getaway from New York and Jewel from Boston, both offering seven-day round trips with overnight stays in Royal Naval Dockyard.

More At Sea™ Offers More Value

NCL’s More At Sea™ program includes unlimited premium open bar, specialty dining, Wi-Fi minutes, and $50 shore excursion credits at every port. The offer also includes free airfare for the second guest and free sailings for kids on select cruises—saving travelers over 75%.
