AmaWaterways Christens AmaSofia

by Julie Bouchner March 17, 2026
written by Julie Bouchner

On March 14, AmaWaterways christened its newest river ship, AmaSofia, during a ceremony on the Rhine alongside travel advisors attending the ASTA River Cruise Expo in Amsterdam.

More than 1,200 advisors joined the celebration across three ships: AmaPrima, AmaVenita, and AmaSofia. Sarah Little, Senior Vice President of Business Development at ASTA, served as godmother and officially christened the ship. The evening ended with a 300-drone light show over the Rhine, closing both the celebration and the ASTA River Cruise Expo.

“Ships come to life through people, from the crew who pour pride into every detail, the guests who celebrate life’s moments on board to the travel advisors who inspire those journeys in the first place,” said Catherine Powell, CEO of AmaWaterways. “We are especially honored to have Sarah Little serve as godmother of AmaSofia.”

AmaSofia is the first AmaWaterways ship in Europe to feature the brand’s updated look. It carries up to 154 guests across 76 staterooms, including suites up to 350 square feet. Onboard features include the line’s twin balcony design and The Chef’s Table specialty restaurant.

The ship launched early on the Rhine for the 2026 season. In April and May, it will sail itineraries such as Rhine Castles & Swiss Alps.

In June, AmaSofia will move to the Danube, with its first sailing on June 7. It will operate itineraries including Romantic Danube, Melodies of the Danube, and Christmas Markets on the Danube, primarily between Budapest and Vilshofen.

“It is a tremendous honor to serve as godmother of AmaSofia,” said Little. “My very first river cruise was with AmaWaterways, which makes this moment especially meaningful.”

More than 100 travel advisors will sail on AmaSofia during a post-expo FAM cruise, with additional FAM sailings planned throughout the year.

Powell concluded by saying, “As we continue to grow, our commitment remains the same to our guests and our travel partners. Today’s christening is not just about welcoming a new ship, but also about celebrating the journey we share together.”

For more information or to book, contact a travel advisor, call 1.800.626.0126, or visit AmaWaterways.com.

Korea’s Kaleidoscope

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine March 16, 2026
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

I’m admiring the beautiful carvings of the Gyeongbukgung Palace in Seoul while clad in the traditional Korean hanbok dress — a short jacket top and a long, full graceful skirt. “One more photo, please!” I plead with my husband Dennis, posing against yet another multicolored chiseled arch.

Around me, men and women, young and old, locals and tourists alike, are sporting similar attire — it’s both a ritual and a fashion statement to explore Seoul’s ancient royal palaces dressed in vintage outfits while snapping loads of selfies. “We Koreans have no problem being old-fashioned one minute and modern the next,” Michelle Hong, my guide from Intrepid Travel, tells me. “We love blending both.”

 Just a few years ago, South Korea, nicknamed “Land of the Morning Calm,” may have been off the beaten path for Western travelers. But K-pop hits like “Gangnam Style,” bands like BTS, foods like kimchi, and the quadruple-Oscar-winning Parasite placed this country on the map. Whatever city you visit, the cultural kaleidoscope never ceases to surprise you.

Seoul

Stretching over 200 square miles and home to almost 10 million people, Seoul has been the country’s capital for more than 600 years — and it shows. Here, historic palaces hide among skyscrapers, traditional markets coexist with extravagant shopping malls, and old-fashioned teahouses elbow fancy coffee shops.

Adjacent to the Gyeongbukgung Palace lies the Bukchon Hanok Village, (hanok means “traditional home”) where residents still live in houses built over 500 years ago. Over time, plumbing and electricity arrived, but the distinct clay-tiled roofs and carved wooden doors remained. Many homes still use a traditional heating system called ondol, which translates as “warm stones.” Laid underneath the floor, an ondol system consists of stone channels that direct and trap the hot air from the kitchen fireplace underneath the rooms, keeping the house warm all night long.

Later, when we head to Gwangjang, a 120-year-old traditional market that sells everything from spices to clothes to medicinal herbs, we walk along Cheonggyecheon, a 6-mile-long urban stream hugged by trees and plants, with fish lurking inside it. A masterpiece of modern engineering, Cheonggyecheon was rebuilt from a decommissioned highway to.…

Grammy-Nominated Saxophonist Dave Koz Is Hosting a Luxury Cruise… So I Asked Him to Play

by Bill Panoff March 12, 2026
written by Bill Panoff

What if your next cruise came with a private concert from Dave Koz?

I recently sat down with Grammy-nominated saxophonist Dave Koz to talk about SOMMA 2026 — Jewels of the Adriatic, an extraordinary voyage sailing November 6–13, 2026 aboard Silversea’s beautiful Silver Nova.

For those familiar with Koz’s legendary Dave Koz & Friends at Sea cruises, you already know the magic that happens when world-class music meets the intimacy of a cruise ship. Now, Koz is taking that concept to a whole new level with SOMMA, an experience designed to bring together music, culture, cuisine, and meaningful connections in some of the Mediterranean’s most stunning destinations.

Imagine sailing through Athens, Kotor, Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar, Bari, and Venice, with each day offering a blend of exploration ashore and unforgettable moments onboard. Guests will enjoy intimate musical performances, curated culinary experiences, engaging conversations, and the chance to connect with fellow travelers who share a passion for music, travel, and extraordinary experiences.

Built on the 15-year sold-out success of the Dave Koz & Friends at Sea cruises, SOMMA represents a new chapter in experiential travel, blending luxury cruising with immersive entertainment and cultural discovery.

And of course, during our conversation, I couldn’t resist asking one important question:

Do you think I could convince Dave Koz to play the sax during my interview?

written by Julie Bouchner

MSC Cruises announced plans to upgrade the MSC Yacht Club Restaurant across its Fantasia Class ships. The updated design is already available on MSC Splendida.

The refreshed restaurant features a more modern look with darker tones, soft textures, and new lighting. The layout also adds subtle partitions for more privacy while keeping the open space and ocean views.

The upgrades are part of MSC Cruises’ ongoing refurbishment program to modernize its ships and improve the guest experience, with several updates focused on the MSC Yacht Club, the line’s all-inclusive luxury area.

MSC Yacht Club Restaurant Debuts on MSC Splendida

The redesigned MSC Yacht Club Restaurant first debuted on MSC Splendida after the ship’s recent refurbishment at the Palumbo Malta Shipyard. The upgrades will roll out to the rest of the Fantasia Class ships over the next few years. MSC Fantasia is scheduled for completion in December 2026, followed by MSC Divina in April 2027 and MSC Preziosa in February 2028.

The MSC Yacht Club restaurant offers a private dining space for guests staying in the Yacht Club, with a rotating menu, a dedicated culinary team, and an onboard sommelier.

The restaurant is part of the MSC Yacht Club, often described as a “ship within a ship.” Guests staying in the Yacht Club have access to private spaces, including a restaurant, lounge, and sundeck, along with 24-hour butler and concierge service.

Future Cruise Offices Also Updated

MSC Cruises is also updating the Future Cruise offices on its Fantasia Class ships. These spaces allow guests to plan and book another cruise while onboard and now feature more seating, updated furnishings, and ocean views. Shō Sugi Ban

by Porthole Cruise and Travel March 11, 2026
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Diamonds in the rough are nothing but carbon subjected to heat, pressure, and time; they all start as something like this. Charred wood. The beauty of the material emerges from careful shaping and polishing. In Japan, this craft is called shō sugi ban or yakisugi.

Dark Roots

“Burnt cedar plank” was originally used as an artful way to make cedar siding more weather resistant. Much the same way as American pioneers whitewashed their clapboard homes, Japanese builders took aromatic cedar — a wood that’s already naturally insect resistant  — and burned it black to keep moisture and mold at bay. Pre-burning will also make dry wood less likely to catch fire.

Tradition

As a wood preservative, the process worked wonderfully. Today, you can still find plenty of traditional yakisugi homes with either jet-black exteriors or decorated in the striking mottling that can come from sanding the blackened wood. But you can also find the “burnt cedar plank” technique in modern architecture as well as furniture, jewelry, kitchenware, and art objects. The natural textures and glossy hues are even more striking in objects small enough to fit inside your room or hold inside your hand.

THE BLACKENED CRAFT

Modern, high-tech versions of yakisugi can be found under the name “thermally modified wood,” which is used in everything from Nordic flooring to “roasted” guitar fretboards. You might find thermally modified wood in saunas, outdoor paneling, and even decking. However, it’s usually made using a combination of high heat, pressure, and changes in atmosphere — like reducing oxygen and increasing nitrogen levels — until the wood undergoes chemical changes.

Old-fashioned yakisugi works its transformations with….

Explora Journeys Marks Three Milestones in Fleet Expansion

by Julie Bouchner March 10, 2026
written by Julie Bouchner

Explora Journeys, the luxury cruise brand from MSC Group, marked three milestones in the construction of its fleet during a ceremony at Fincantieri’s Sestri Ponente shipyard in Genoa, Italy.

The event included the float out of EXPLORA IV, the coin ceremony for EXPLORA V, and the steel cutting for EXPLORA VI. Executives from MSC Group and Fincantieri attended the ceremony along with local officials.

“For the first time, all six ships in our fleet are either in service or under construction,” said Anna Nash, President of Explora Journeys. “It’s a defining moment as we continue expanding the brand and introducing more travelers to our approach to luxury ocean travel.”

RELATED: Explora Journeys Reveals New Brand Campaign

This is the third triple ceremony for Explora Journeys in the past 18 months, as the company continues to build its six-ship fleet. Two ships are already sailing, and EXPLORA III is scheduled to launch in July 2026. Four ships are currently under construction at the Genoa shipyard.

Explora Journeys plans to have all six ships in service by 2028. EXPLORA IV and EXPLORA V are expected to launch in 2027, followed by EXPLORA VI in 2028.

During the ceremony, Captain Serena Melani and Alice Gallo served as godmothers for the coin ceremony of EXPLORA V, while Cristina Bacigalupo served as the godmother for the float out of EXPLORA IV.

MSC Group has invested €3.5 billion in the Explora Journeys fleet. Including ships previously built for MSC Cruises, the company’s total investment with Fincantieri is about €7 billion.

The next ship to launch will be EXPLORA III, expected to be delivered ahead of schedule this July. After delivery, it will sail a Mediterranean prelude voyage before its naming ceremony on August 1 at MSC’s cruise terminal in Barcelona.

Several ships in the fleet are designed to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG). EXPLORA III will be the first with LNG capabilities, and EXPLORA IV, V, and VI are also being built with LNG systems.

All ships will also have shore power capability, allowing them to connect to electricity while in port and reduce emissions. Explora Journeys is also studying fuel cell technology that could convert LNG into hydrogen to further lower emissions in the future.

Scenic Group plans to add three new river ships to its fleet. The expansion includes one Emerald Cruises Star-Ship and two Scenic Space-Ships that will sail in Europe and Asia starting in 2027 and 2028.

The announcement comes as Scenic Group marks 40 years in the cruise industry.

Glen Moroney, Chairman & Founder, Scenic Group, said: “Our commitment to an additional three new river ships for the Scenic and Emerald Cruises brands reflects our confidence in the strong demand for our unique approach to luxury cruising. With Scenic Ikon in build for delivery in 2028 and five Emerald Cruises yachts and river ships already confirmed, this announcement marks the next phase of our strategic fleet growth. By bringing the design and construction of these new river ships under the expertise of our team at MKM Yachts, we can apply the same exacting standards, innovation and design principles that have underpinned Scenic Group’s success for the past 40 years.”

Emerald Nova: launching June 2027 on the Douro River

Emerald Nova will sail on Portugal’s Douro River and join Emerald Radiance. The ship will offer longer itineraries and two different cruise options.

One itinerary, the 11-day Douro Highlights: Porto, Salamanca & the Wine Valley, will visit cities and wine regions throughout the valley. Guests will also have active excursion options like guided hikes and kayaking.

Scenic Aria: launching September 2027 on the Douro River

Scenic Aria will join Scenic Azure on the Douro River. The ship will operate two itineraries: the 11-day Unforgettable Douro and the 8-day Delightful Douro.

Scenic Spirit II: launching early 2028 on the Mekong River

Scenic Spirit II will sail on the Mekong River through Vietnam and Cambodia. The new ship is being added as demand for Mekong River cruises continues to grow.

The announcement follows previously confirmed ships, including Emerald Astra, launching in May 2026 on the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers, and Emerald Lumi, launching on France’s Seine River in 2027.

Scenic Group is also adding new yachts, including Emerald Kaia in April 2026, Emerald Raiya in 2027, and Emerald Xara in 2028. Scenic Ikon is scheduled to launch in 2028.

Gastronomy Ahoy!

by Toby Saltzman March 9, 2026
written by Toby Saltzman

Feasting under the Tuscan sun on curly strozzapreti pasta laced with fragrant vegetables, chunks of Grotta Pecorino cheese drizzled with saba grape preserves, and slices of cured meats tucked with caramelized figs, I was enchanted by the vineyard ambience of La Sabbiona, a family-run farmhouse nestled in the foothills of Italy’s Emilia-Romagna Apennines. Savoring each bite, I reflected on how Oceania Allura’s Mediterranean cruise flowed with daily gastronomic delights while introducing regional flavors and culture along the way. My tour from Ravenna had started with a walk through medieval Brisighella, overlooking the vineyards and ancient olive trees known for the emerald olive oil recognized by UNESCO for its Italian heritage. On Allura that evening, I relished sampling Tuscan specialties, including aromatic seafood stew while dining al fresco during the glowing sunset. For Oceania Cruises — known from inception for its culinary focus and as the first with an onboard cooking school — this delightful day epitomized its spirit of culinary cruising.

As appetites for cruising swell across global horizons, cruise lines are catering to discriminating tastes by mingling haute cuisine on board with immersive culinary tours ashore, luring guests with tantalizing options to savor the cuisine, culture, and wines of a destination. Luxury lines boast their celebrated chefs and Michelin-star-quality restaurants while offering cooking classes and chef-guided market tours in select ports. Oceania added zest for foodies with the “Snap & Savor” program that combines a digital food photo workshop and cooking session.

Oceania Allura’s culinary program is helmed by two French master chefs, Alexis Quaretti and Eric Barale, in collaboration with Jacques Pépin, the line’s original culinary ambassador. The 1,200-passenger vessel, sister to Vista, houses 12 eateries including four specialty restaurants. Jacques, Chef Pépin’s signature French restaurant, dazzles diners with traditional tableside service for flaming crêpes suzette. Pan-Asian Red Ginger added a medley of Nikkei Japanese-Peruvian inspired dishes including spice-crusted rack of lamb with wasabi juice, and bao buns stuffed with soft-shell crab tempura. On my sailing, the seven-course wine-pairing feast led by Chef Quaretti started with Sturia osetra caviar on a potato fritter, risotto with calamari and scallops, and culminated with Callebaut chocolate cake served with caramel and white chocolate mousse, hazelnut praline, and gold-leaf garnish. The new Oceania Sonata, debuting in August 2027, will add two specialty restaurants, including the first La Table par Maîtres Cuisiniers de France operating on a cruise ship.

Cuisine Cruising

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur offers specialty dining for 750 guests. Compass Rose allows guests to customize meals with preferred preparation, sauces and sides. Chartreuse’s contemporary French cuisine includes cheese soufflé, lobster tail with scallop mousse, and Dover sole meunière. Culinary Arts Kitchens aboard Grandeur, Splendor and Explorer offer gourmet cooking classes led by renowned Executive Chef Kathryn Kelly. Launching in December 2026, the 825-guest Seven Seas Prestige will feature the new Azure Mediterranean restaurant. Regent’s Epicurean Explorer tours range from foraging for wild sea herbs on Ireland’s Belfast coast to travelling from Monaco for a guided market tour of Nice followed by lunch in the medieval mountain village of Eze overlooking the French Riviera.

Silversea’s 728-guest Silver Ray and Silver Nova serve French gastronomy at La Dame, seafood at Atlantide, and Asian flavors at Indochine. The line’s S.A.L.T. program — an acronym for “Sea and Land Taste” — defines each ship’s culinary voyage. S.A.L.T. Kitchen menus change daily to reflect the ship’s regional location. Cooking classes at S.A.L.T. Lab use .…

Princess Cruises Is Changing the Way Cruise Lines Do Dining

by Porthole Cruise and Travel March 9, 2026
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

At Princess Cruises, dining at sea is no longer just buffets and main dining rooms. Under the direction of Vice President of Food and Beverage Sami Kohen, the line is reshaping how guests experience food and beverages across its fleet.

Kohen has built a story-driven approach that connects guests with hand-selected culinary partners. From Makoto’s sushi expertise to The Butcher’s Block by Dario and Tony Gemignani’s award-winning pizza, each chef brings both skill and narrative to the dining experience. Guests don’t just eat. They engage with the people, the history, and the craft behind every dish. These are just a few examples of the full roster of celebrity chef partners Princess has curated across its ships, each bringing their own signature style and personal story to the table. Guests can attend chef-led demonstrations, meet-and-greets, and interactive tastings, turning each meal into an immersive experience.

Beverages are receiving the same treatment. Princess Cruises, famous as “The Love Boat,” curates an exclusive “Love Line Premium Liquors” collection featuring celebrity-partnered wines and spirits aimed at elevating onboard experiences. Key brands include McConaughey’s Pantalones Tequila, Jason Momoa’s MEILI Vodka, Blake Lively’s Betty Booze, and Kylie Minogue’s zero-alcohol options. These partnerships go beyond brand endorsements. They are ownership-driven collaborations that bring authentic stories and celebrity influence directly to guests. Last year, Princess sold 1.2 million 24-karat gold margaritas. In February, the line aims to break the Guinness World Record for most margaritas sold in eight hours aboard the Regal Princess, turning cocktails into headline-making experiences and creating unique, social-media-ready moments for guests.

Princess’ focus on authenticity extends to its certified offerings. Alfredo’s Pizzeria, featuring Tony Gemignani, recently received official certification from the Italian Chamber of Commerce, marking the only certified Italian pizzeria at sea. Across the fleet, these experiences are designed to connect guests with global flavors, cultures, and culinary craftsmanship in ways that are unique to Princess.

The approach reflects a larger vision. It transforms cruise dining into immersive experiences that combine culinary mastery, storytelling, and measurable impact. Kohen, named F&B Maverick of the Year by C-Trade last year, is at the center of this evolution, orchestrating the partnerships, programming, and activations that set Princess apart from other cruise lines. From specialty restaurants to in-cabin culinary videos, interactive tastings, and live cocktail activations, every element is designed to engage, entertain, and inspire.

With nearly three million guests visiting Princess ships annually, this strategy ensures that dining is not just a meal. It is a global, memorable experience that leaves a mark both on the palate and in the mind.

With Kohen leading the charge, Princess is proving that dining at sea can be more than a meal. It can be an experience, a story, and a memory that lasts long after the voyage ends.

Beginning in November 2026, the ship will operate Western Caribbean itineraries visiting Roatán, Cozumel, and Harvest Caye.

On April 6, 2027, Norwegian Luna will begin sailings from New York City, offering four- to seven-day Bermuda cruises with overnights at Royal Naval Dockyard.

Disney Cruise Line Christens Disney Adventure

by Julie Bouchner March 4, 2026
written by Julie Bouchner

Disney Cruise Line christened its newest ship, Disney Adventure, with an entertainment showcase highlighting the Disney stories, characters, and music featured onboard. The ceremony also marked the cruise line’s first ship to sail in Southeast Asia.

In the Walt Disney Theatre aboard the ship, guests watched Disney storytelling come to life through regional vocalists, musicians, and video effects, with appearances from Captain Mickey Mouse and Captain Minnie Mouse. A 23-piece orchestra joined Hollywood Performing Arts Hall of Fame inductee Jed Madela and Eurovision artist Dami Im to perform classic Disney, Pixar, and Marvel songs alongside large-scale visuals surrounding the stage.

Chairman of Disney Experiences and incoming CEO of The Walt Disney Company Josh D’Amaro, and President of Disney Signature Experiences Joe Schott, also joined the artists on stage to mark the occasion.

“The Walt Disney Company has always been built on the power of storytelling and innovation – and Disney Cruise Line brings those values to life in extraordinary ways. Our cruise ships are ambassadors of our brand that carry joy, wonder and enchantment to destinations around the world,” said D’Amaro. “As our first ship to homeport in Asia, the Disney Adventure represents a new chapter for Disney Cruise Line and will introduce Disney to audiences who may be experiencing our magic for the very first time. It offers fans across this region an opportunity to immerse themselves in unforgettable ways and create memories that are uniquely Disney.”

Robert Downey Jr., godparent of Disney Adventure, delivered the ceremonial blessing wishing good fortune for the ship and its guests.

“I’ve had the privilege of getting to know the team at Walt Disney Imagineering, and I can tell you Adventure is the perfect name for what they’ve created,” he said. “Being the Godparent of this majestic vessel is an honor, and I have some serious duties to perform, so let’s make it official, shall we?”

The ceremony concluded with a confetti burst and Disney characters performing “Let’s Set Sail,” a Disney Cruise Line tradition that celebrates the start of a ship’s journeys.

Inspired by more than 100 years of Disney, Pixar, and Marvel storytelling, the Disney Adventure features seven themed areas, including San Fransokyo Street from Big Hero 6. Onboard offerings include a new Broadway-style musical, Remember; immersive dining; fireworks at sea; kids clubs; bars and lounges for adults; and attractions such as Disney Cruise Line’s first roller coaster at sea, Ironcycle Test Run.

The Disney Adventure is Disney Cruise Line’s eighth ship and its largest to date. The ship departs on its maiden voyage March 10, followed by a season of three- and four-night sailings. The vessel is part of Disney Cruise Line’s fleet expansion, which will add five more ships by 2031.

Guests can learn more or book at disneycruise.com, by calling 888-325-2500, or through a travel advisor.

Steve Leland’s Just When You Need Help

by Steve Leland March 3, 2026
written by Steve Leland

It’s hard to know when you’ll need certain things — especially items you simply can’t pick up at a local store.

When I developed a foot issue that made walking difficult, the challenge wasn’t just the discomfort, but how quickly everyday movement became an obstacle. What I needed most was a simple solution that wouldn’t require added effort or guesswork.

That solution came from Special Needs Group. They arranged a mobility scooter and delivered it directly to my home. The process was straightforward, the equipment was ready to use, and I really noticed the immediate return of my independence. It was a reminder of how critical access to the right support can be when mobility is suddenly limited … when you can’t get around as easily as usual.

Special Needs Group specializes in medical and accessibility equipment rentals. That means:

* scooters

* manual and powered wheelchairs

* walkers

* hospital beds

* oxygen equipment

* CPAP machines

* bathroom safety aids

… and more.

Andrew Garnett, Founder, CEO and President of Special Needs Group

Each item is professionally maintained and delivered with care — details that matter when comfort and reliability are essential.

What truly distinguishes the company is its understanding of travel, particularly cruising. Rather than managing the logistics of transporting medical equipment through airports and ports, cruisers can have what they need delivered directly to their ship, allowing us to begin our voyages without interruption.

Whether at home or at sea, Special Needs Group provides reassurance at moments when uncertainty can otherwise take over. By meeting clients exactly where they are, the company restores more than mobility — it restores confidence.
