5 Smart Packing Staples for Day-to-Night Cruise Style

by Porthole Cruise and Travel August 20, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

When you’re heading off on a cruise or coastal getaway, packing versatile pieces is key. With limited suitcase space—and often tight storage in your stateroom (we know, you want to bring your entire house)—your wardrobe needs to work for everything from beach lounging and port exploring to formal dinners and date nights. These five essentials help create effortless looks that transition seamlessly from sun-soaked days to elegant evenings—and help you pack smart without overstuffing your suitcase or sacrificing style.

1. A Convertible Day-to-Night Dress (or Set)

Photo: Celebrity Cruises

Packing versatile clothing maximizes suitcase space. A flowy midi or maxi dress, or a coordinated two-piece set in breathable fabrics like linen or cotton, can take you from daytime excursions to dinner effortlessly. Pair your dress with sandals and a sun hat for exploring ports, then switch to wedges or heels and add your favorite jewelry for nighttime. You don’t need to spend a fortune—there are plenty of affordable, stylish options in solids or subtle prints that mix and match easily.

2. Easy Statement Jewelry

Pearl Bubble Necklace | Photo: ALV Jewels

Parker Studs | Photo: ALV Jewels

Accessories are the easiest way to change up an outfit without adding bulk to your suitcase. They can instantly transform a simple base into something fresh and polished. A delicate necklace works beautifully for daytime—think of something like ALV Jewels’ Pearl Bubble Initial Necklace, which adds a personal touch to a sundress, breezy blouse, or even a swimsuit cover-up. As the day winds down and you’re getting ready for dinner, swap the necklace for a pair of earrings that bring a little more shine. Small but statement-making styles—like ALV’s Parker Studs for a sleek, modern vibe or their Sparkle Drop Earrings for a touch of glam—instantly elevate your look without ever feeling overdone. You can explore their wide selection here.

💡 Packing tip: Stick to lightweight, travel-friendly jewelry in metals or finishes that complement most of your clothing. These versatile pieces add polish without bulk, making them ideal accessories for a cruise wardrobe.

3. A Stylish (But Functional) Bag

Photo: ALV Jewels

Every traveler needs one great daytime bag and one chic evening option. A roomy tote or crossbody is ideal for shore excursions and beach days—ALV’s Boat Tote balances practicality with style, holding sunscreen, shades, and a book without looking bulky. For evenings, you often don’t need much more than your cruise ID, but a small clutch or mini bag for your phone and lipstick keeps you feeling put together.

💡 Styling tip: Neutral tones and natural textures like raffia or canvas work with every outfit and feel perfectly at home on a coastal escape.

4. Oversized Sunglasses

Photo: Rido

A great pair of oversized sunglasses is a must. They’re not only essential sun protection, but they also add instant glam whether you’re lounging poolside or strolling through port markets. Black or tortoiseshell frames are timeless, while a bold-colored frame can double as a style statement. You don’t need to break the bank—check out affordable options on Amazon or at your local mall.

💡 Pro tip: Always pack a protective case—scratched lenses are the fastest way to ruin your favorite travel accessory.

5. A Lightweight Layer That Pulls It All Together

Even in warm climates, cruise ships can be breezy, and the air conditioning indoors runs strong. A lightweight layer—like a cropped cardigan, silky wrap, or classic linen shirt—keeps you comfortable while finishing your look. Toss it over a swimsuit at lunch, then drape it over your shoulders for dinner.

💡 Styling tip: Stick to neutrals or soft pastels that can be paired with multiple outfits. A piece with subtle texture or detail, like ribbing or fringe, adds interest without competing with the rest of your wardrobe.

Packing smart for your cruise doesn’t mean sacrificing style. With a few versatile staples—convertible clothing, lightweight jewelry, a functional bag, statement sunglasses, and a go-anywhere layer—you can create effortless looks from day to night. By choosing mix-and-match pieces and thoughtful accessories, you’ll travel light while looking polished at every step of the journey. For your next vacation, which of these tips will you be using?

 A Zero-Emission Cruise Ship

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine August 18, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

The out-of-the-box thinkers at Hurtigruten continue to make progress in their quest to create the world’s most energy-efficient cruise ship.

The cruise line, always on the cutting edge of sustainable sea travel, has just completed a series of tests to improve the ship’s design. They’re testing, among other innovations, retractable sails, large battery packs, contra-rotating propellers and an energy-optimized hull.

“We’re learning a lot from these tests,” Hurtigruten’s Chief Operating Officer Gerry Larsson-Fedde said.

They’re projecting that by 2030, the ship will be ready to sail, emissions-free in normal operations along the Norwegian coast.

About the Experience

Following its debut on Sun Princess, Spellbound by Magic Castle on Star Princess introduces a theme honoring the golden age of magic and magician Richard Valentine Pitchford—known as Cardini. Spellbound will also debut a cocktail menu exclusive to the Cardini Bar, including The Inner Circle, a milk-washed Meili vodka with jasmine tea, and the Cardini, a butter-washed rum Old Fashioned.

Spellbound by Magic Castle will be open to all guests, with multiple nightly showtimes. Admission is $45 per guest and includes two signature cocktails and a magic show. Tickets are available in advance at www.princess.com or onboard. Dinner service will no longer be offered before showtime; guests should plan to dine at least two hours before their reservation.

A Warm Welcome to Istanbul

by Bill Panoff August 14, 2025
written by Bill Panoff

From the moment I stepped onto the gangplank, I could feel it: This wasn’t just a port facility — it was a portal into Istanbul’s story. With the Bosphorus shimmering at my side and the Galata Tower rising over the historic neighborhood of Karaköy just steps away, I felt as though I was already in step with the local rhythm.

Galataport is one of the most innovative cruise terminals on the planet. It redefines what it means to arrive — transforming what’s often a utilitarian process into an open-air experience that feels luxurious, authentic, cultural, and deeply connected to the destination. You won’t find endless queues, harsh lighting, shabby carpet, or cold hallways here. Instead, you’ll breeze through passport control in minutes, thanks to a brilliantly designed world’s first underground cruise terminal that emphasizes ease, efficiency, and — yes — style.

Where Disembarkation Meets Discovery

What struck me most was how seamless everything felt. Galataport’s helpful staff, clearly marked walkways, and intuitive design make the transition from ship to city feel effortless. One moment you’re gazing at the horizon from your balcony and the next, you’re sipping Turkish coffee in a café, wandering through a pop-up art gallery, or browsing the shelves at Atelier Rebul, famous for its locally inspired soaps and scents.

This is where Galataport shines: it doesn’t feel like you’re “leaving” the ship. It feels like your journey is continuing — in the best way possible.

A Destination for All the Senses

Beymen

Beyond its sleek design and efficiency, Galataport is a destination in its own right. I loved the cross-section of retail offerings, from Zara and Massimo Dutti to Flying Tiger Copenhagen, Sandro, Maje, and Beymen – carrying brands such as Celine, Loewe, Balmain, and others. Alongside these global names, you’ll also discover boutiques by Turkish designers, showcasing the fashion heritage in contemporary form.

Whether you’re shopping to upgrade your wardrobe, looking for sporty travel gear, or searching for last-minute gifts, the selection here is sharp, stylish, and delightfully local.

The culinary scene is just as enticing, with restaurants and cafés serving everything from fresh seafood and fish from the Bosphorus to traditional Turkish delicacies – perfect for a taste of Istanbul before you sail.

And let’s not forget the cultural programming: pop-up art shows, live music performances, and installations that celebrate Istanbul’s creative soul. It’s not uncommon to step off a ship and immediately stumble upon a fashion catwalk or a jazz quartet playing just outside the terminal or even an open-air tasting of artisanal Turkish treats.

PortPass: Elevated Assistance

For guests looking to take the luxury even further, Galataport’s PortPass is a game changer. This bundled premium service includes fast-track access, priority baggage handling, and personal assistance during both embarkation and disembarkation. It’s a concierge-level experience that takes the usual 55-minute process down to just 22 minutes—freeing up time for what really matters: enjoying Istanbul.

Liman İstanbul

A Brief Taste of Istanbul

Short layover? No problem. Galataport’s curated Experience Packages make even the briefest visit unforgettable. The Morning Package pairs a traditional Turkish breakfast at Liman İstanbul with a sightseeing cruise along the Bosphorus—perfect after disembarkation. Prefer a memorable send-off? The Evening Package offers dinner by the water and a night sailing beneath Istanbul’s illuminated skyline before you board.

It’s proof that even a few hours here can feel like a full-day adventure. To book your experience package, simply call 444 52 66 or stop by the Visitor Center upon arrival at Galataport — the team will take care of the rest.

The Final Word

Where most cruise terminals are simply a means of getting on and off a ship, Galataport is a revelation. It turns arrival into something extraordinary: a welcome that’s easy and alive with energy.

Whether it’s your first time in Istanbul, your fifth, or your fiftieth, Galataport shows you that travel should begin the moment you step ashore. And if you’re lucky enough to start or end your journey here, you’re not just passing through a port. You’re stepping into Istanbul’s story … one unforgettable moment at a time.

The Allure of Dining at Sea

by Toby Saltzman August 14, 2025
written by Toby Saltzman

No wonder Oceania Allura surpassed expectations on her maiden voyage through Adriatic and Mediterranean ports. Sure, when Oceania Cruises’ newest vessel, twin to the luxurious 1,200-passenger Vista, launched in May 2023, the ship amused guests with rich amenities, from her beautiful pool deck to the secluded spa terrace with thalassotherapy waters to the Artist Loft and sports-deck pickleball court. Meantime, it was Allura’s culinary initiatives that stirred palpable delight, both on ship and ashore. The line demonstrated that it was keenly aware discriminating guests can dine in the finest restaurants on land, or hone skills at cookery schools or on winery tours, and that food is a tantalizing lure for new and seasoned cruisers to bite on a cruise. With Allura, Oceania — known from inception for its culinary focus and as the first cruise line to have an onboard cooking school — epitomizes the evolution of culinary cruising to immerse guests in global cultures and enhance reflections on the destinations the ship visits.

Remarkably, Allura is the only ship whose culinary program is helmed by two French master chefs, Alexis Quaretti and Eric Barale. In collaboration with Jacques Pépin, Oceania’s original culinary-ambassador chef, Quaretti and Barale mingle innovation and creativity while overseeing a team amounting to one chef for every eight guests. A galley tour of the vast kitchen showcased meticulous sourcing of the finest ingredients, including Minoterie Planchot flour for signature breads and pastries, Échiré butter, Label Rouge chicken, and Iberico pork.

Allura’s 12 eateries include the Grand Dining Room and four specialty restaurants, including Polo Grill and Toscana Italian restaurant, all with tasty additions to Oceania favorites. Notably, Jacques, Chef Pépin’s signature French restaurant, dazzled diners with traditional tableside service for hand-cut beef tartare, Dover sole, and crêpes Suzette. My gourmand friend said Jacques’ steak was the best he ever tasted.

Ceviche Nikkei at pan-Asian restaurant Red Ginger | Photo: Toby Saltzman

In the pan-Asian Red Ginger — renowned for miso-glazed sea bass — the waiter generously served all 12 new Nikkei Japanese-Peruvian dishes. Mouthwatering tastes included ceviche marinated red tuna, Peruvian-style beef short ribs, bao buns stuffed with soft-shell crab tempura, Peruvian-accent skewers of chicken and beef, and yuzu cheesecake.

Guests who craved more could indulge at the Crêperie on decadent bubble waffles filled with ice-cream treats, or at Baristas bar and bakery on varieties of quiches, croissants, and éclairs.

Variety of local Italy cheeses at the Italian Market Dinner | Photo: Toby Saltzman

While cruising the Italian Riviera, the Master Chefs Market Dinner showcased Allura’s dedication to engage guests with a sense of place redolent of local culinary culture. Arrayed in brilliant splendor, the Italian buffet — brimming with varieties of cheeses, antipasti, and fresh tomatoes — was a feast for the eyes (and moreso for the palate) as chefs created Caprese salads, hand-rolled pasta, grilled fish, and meats to order. After seconds of fragrant Tuscan fish stew, I barely had room for a puffy cannoli or apricot tart.

Culinary excursion from Ravenna, Italy to La Sabbiana | Photo: Toby Saltzman

Along the way, Allura offered exclusive excursions to taste foods and wines in every port. My favorites for engaging with locals: a jaunt from Ravenna, Italy, to Brisighella for alfresco lunch at La Sabbiona in the heart of the Emilia-Romagnia region famed for its olive oil, and from Kotor, Montenegro, to the centuries-old mountaintop Storia di Pietra Winery for brunch in their elegant venue.

Inspired by Allura’s culinary style, many guests bought a copy of Oceania’s Culinary Center Recipe Collection, full of deliciousness to savor. Just off the cruise, I’m already trying to perfect Dover Sole Meuniere.

written by Julie Bouchner

Princess Cruises’ second Sphere-Class ship, Star Princess, has completed her final sea trials and is set to welcome guests on October 4, 2025, on a Mediterranean sailing from Barcelona!

During final sea trials from August 9–12, Star Princess sailed from Fincantieri Shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, into the Adriatic Sea, testing steering, navigation, and propulsion. The LNG-powered ship features two Azipod units for 360-degree thrust and four bow thrusters for precise maneuvering.

Captain Gennaro Arma, a 27-year Princess veteran and leader of the Sphere-Class newbuild team, oversaw the trials and now leads 1,600 crew members as the ship enters its final outfitting phase.

“We confidently led Star Princess through sea trials,” said Captain Arma. “As the proud leader of our newest vessel, I’m extremely impressed with the ship’s navigation capabilities and maneuverability. With the final countdown underway, my incredible teammates and I can’t wait to welcome guests aboard for unforgettable adventures this fall.”

Currently in final construction at Fincantieri, Star Princess is a 177,800-ton, 4,300-guest ship and sister to Sun Princess. It will offer 30 dining and bar venues, entertainment spaces, and accommodations, including suites, mini-suites, and balcony rooms. With over 1,500 balcony staterooms, guests will enjoy panoramic ocean views. Highlighted spaces include The Dome, The Arena theater, The Piazza, and Spellbound by Magic Castle®.

Tracing the Origins of the Panama Hat

by Steve Leland August 13, 2025
written by Steve Leland

Despite its name, the Panama hat originated in Ecuador. In the 19th century, Ecuadorian hat makers shipped their products to Panama to access larger trade markets. The style gained worldwide fame after President Roosevelt was photographed wearing one during a visit to Panama. Today, this emblem of Ecuadorian craftsmanship is recognized on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

Before a Galapagos cruise, a stop at Ecua Andino Hats in Guayaquil offers a look into the hat’s history. Family-owned since 1983, the brand has grown into one of the top producers of Panama hats, with designs worn by celebrities and politicians around the world. In their showroom, hundreds of hats line the walls, and speaking with co-founder Alejandro Lecaro and general manager Daniela Lecaro reveals the hat’s cultural significance.

Ecua Andino Hats | Photo: Steve Leland

The hats are handwoven from the plaited strands of the toquilla palm. Depending on the fineness of the straw and weave, production can take from a week to six months. The process includes stripping and boiling the leaves, drying them in the sun, splitting them into thread-thin strands, and weaving them around a block mold to form the hat’s shape.

The finest example is the Montecristi superfinos, made by fewer than a dozen master weavers. Prices range from about $40 for simple designs to $3 million for the most intricate, including one woven by Simón Espinal with 3,906 weaves per square inch.

While colored styles have emerged, the classic off-white remains the most iconic. I once owned a Panama hat bought directly from a weaver in Manta, Ecuador, but lost it to a rogue wind on a Mediterranean cruise. Thanks to a visit to Ecua Andino, I once again have a prized piece of Ecuadorian heritage in hand.

Nice, France – More Than Just a Starting Point

by Dana Freeman August 12, 2025
written by Dana Freeman

Too often, travelers breeze through Nice en route to their cruise ship, treating it as little more than a place to drop their bags before setting sail. But this sun-drenched city deserves more than a quick overnight. As the capital of the French Riviera, Nice has a rhythm all its own—one that invites you to slow down, settle in, and soak up the Mediterranean way of life. Within 20 minutes of landing at the airport, you could be wandering the cobblestone streets of Old Town, sipping a glass of chilled rosé by the sea, or exploring the city’s open-air markets and Belle Époque architecture. Nice isn’t just a gateway; it’s a destination worth lingering in.

Hotel Negresco | Photo: Dana Freeman

For a true taste of Riviera glamour, the Hotel Negresco is Nice’s most iconic place to stay. This art-filled, century-old landmark sits right on the Promenade des Anglais, just steps from the beach and a short stroll from both Place Masséna and the Old Town. Booking one of its 102 rooms or 26 suites is certainly a splurge, but it’s an unforgettable way to start or end your cruise in true Riviera style.

Tucked between the Promenade des Anglais and a row of designer boutiques—including Hermès and Cartier—the Anantara Plaza Nice Hotel blends old-world elegance with modern comfort. Originally opened in 1848 as Nice’s first luxury hotel, this landmark property has been thoughtfully restored, offering 152 light-filled rooms and suites with views of the sea, the city, or the lush Jardin Albert 1er just across the street. From this central location, you’re only a short stroll from the beach, the bustling lanes of Old Town, and some of the city’s best cafés and cultural spots.

Nestled in Nice’s Old Town, Hôtel du Couvent transforms a 17th-century convent into a serene five-star urban retreat. With 88 thoughtfully furnished rooms, terraced gardens, Roman-style baths, and a glorious lap pool overlooking the city and sea, it’s a place where history and modern comfort meet.

What To Do

Beach in Villa Franche | Photo: Dana Freeman

Cruise along the palm-lined Promenade des Anglais on a Lime e-bike for a fun, breezy way to take in the Mediterranean views. With dedicated bike lanes and plenty of places to stop, it’s an easy, scenic ride that captures the laid-back charm of Nice.

For a more relaxed alternative to the bustling Castel Plage on Nice’s main beach, hop on the train just two short stops to Villefranche-sur-Mer. Marinières Plage beach club sits right on the harbor, where yellow-and-white umbrellas, matching striped towels, and a canopied deck create a bohemian-chic vibe against the sparkling Côte d’Azur. Attentive servers keep the rosé flowing while you lounge by the sea or enjoy a leisurely lunch in the shade. Reserve your spot in advance during the busy summer months.

If you want to explore the small towns along the French Riviera beyond Nice without the hassle of trains or tours, Daytrip offers a seamless, personalized way to do it. A private driver will pick you up at your hotel and share local tips as you make your way to charming spots like Èze and Monaco. With plenty of time to explore at your own pace—and a stress-free return ride waiting—it’s an effortless way to see more of the Riviera.

Where to Eat & Drink

SEEN Rooftop | Photo: Dana Freeman

In Nice, some of the best views are found high above the streets, where rooftop terraces invite you to linger over a perfectly mixed cocktail or a glass of wine. Sip an Aperol Spritz at SEEN by Oliver on the 6th floor of the Anantara Nice or enjoy a glass of Prosecco at the B Club Terrasse.

If you love cheese, don’t miss La Cave du Fromager, an underground gem serving gooey raclettes, bubbling fondues, homemade bread, and generous charcuterie plates for more than 35 years. Tucked into a stone cellar in Old Nice, this cozy spot pairs rich flavors with an excellent list of natural wines.

For a local spot with charm and flavor, Acqua e Farina in Vieux Nice serves simple, authentic Italian dishes like wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas and fresh spaghetti alle vongole. It’s casual, unfussy, and always packed.

Just off Place Rossetti, Le Bar des Oiseaux serves seasonal French cuisine with a Mediterranean twist in a cozy dining room or on its charming outdoor terrace. The attentive staff will guide you through the handwritten daily chalkboard menu, featuring standouts like garlic-parsley calamari, artisanal pasta, and fresh seafood specials. Reservations are recommended, but with a bit of luck, you might still snag a table if you arrive right when they open.

Tucked into the heart of Car d’Or, Casa Elli is an Italian café and restaurant offering favorites like Niçoise pasta with pesto, creamy burrata, and other Sicilian specialties. End your meal with a scoop of their house-made gelato for a sweet finale.

Don’t Miss

Cours Saleya Flower Market | Photo: Dana Freeman

Socca — Since 1961, Chez René Socca on Rue Miralheti in Old Town has been serving this local specialty: a chickpea pancake, scraped hot from the pan, best enjoyed with a glass of chilled French rosé.

Market Shopping — For an authentic taste of Niçoise life, head to the vibrant Cours Saleya Flower Market, just a block from the Mediterranean in Old Town, or the Libération Market on Place du Général de Gaulle, open 6 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (closed Mondays). A local favorite, Libération offers fresh produce, cheese, olives, and bread alongside stalls selling lavender, soaps, and other Provençal treasures.

Gelato — With two locations in Old Town, Glacier Fenocchio has been a Nice institution since 1966. Choose from more than 90 artisanal flavors of homemade ice cream and sorbet, from classics like fleur de lait, chocolat, and pistachio to the unexpected (lavender, avocado—even chewing gum). Whether you’re after one scoop or 15 (yes, 15 boules for €24), it’s a must-visit for serious gelato lovers.

Whether you’re savoring local specialties, exploring vibrant markets, or soaking in the sea breeze from a rooftop terrace, Nice offers plenty for those with a few extra days before or after a cruise. It’s no surprise this charming city serves as a popular embarkation point for many luxury cruise lines, including Ponant, Azamara Cruises, Emerald Cruises, Scenic, Silversea Cruises, Sea Cloud, Star Clippers, CroisiEurope, and Atlas Ocean Voyages.

by Porthole Cruise and Travel August 11, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Swan Hellenic has announced its first cultural expedition cruises in the Asia-Pacific, marking the return of SH Minerva and completing the company’s fleet!

In 2026, travelers can choose from seven curated cruises across two seasons—five in April and May, and two in September—that can be combined into longer voyages.

After completing her Antarctic season, SH Minerva will depart Honiara, Solomon Islands, on April 5, 2026, embarking on five cruises that explore the natural beauty, cultural heritage, and history of the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Japan.

“We’re exceptionally proud that SH Minerva is now offering our guests access to the Asia Pacific – a region of extraordinary cultural richness and natural beauty,” says Swan Hellenic CEO Andrea Zito. “This marks a new chapter for our company and this ship, the emblem of Swan Hellenic’s renaissance, as she continues to sail under our full ownership. With this first Asia Pacific season, we now offer a truly global choice of voyages, touching every continent and offering our guests a uniquely meaningful way to explore the world, seeing what others don’t.”

True to Swan Hellenic’s style, no port is repeated across these cruises, allowing guests to link them into a 55-day grand voyage ending in Otaru, Japan, on May 30, 2026.

Due to remote locations, the first three cruises include exclusive Cruise Plus packages with hotel stays, charter flights, and transfers. The final two cruises from Manila and Hiroshima offer Cruise Only packages with standard flight access.

Princess Cruises announces the addition of Makoto Ocean specialty sushi restaurant to Diamond Princess and Sapphire Princess starting this fall.

Guests sailing to Antarctica, Southeast Asia, and Japan will soon enjoy the bold, authentic flavors of Chef Makoto Okuwa’s Edomae-style sushi aboard these two beloved diamond-class ships. First introduced on Sun Princess in 2024 and set to debut on Star Princess in October 2025, Makoto Ocean has quickly become a guest favorite.

“The expansion of Makoto Ocean is exceptionally meaningful as we bring a guest favorite to those sailing to other regions around the world,” said Sami Kohen, Vice President of Food and Beverage, Princess Cruises. “Makoto Ocean reflects the elegance and authenticity of Japanese cuisine our guests will enjoy across Japan.”

Chef Makoto Okuwa’s Modern Take on Edomae-Style Sushi

With over 25 years of culinary experience, Chef Makoto Okuwa brings a fresh, artfully presented interpretation of traditional Edomae-style sushi to Diamond Princess and Sapphire Princess.

Edomae-style sushi, developed in 1820s Tokyo, combines vinegared rice with fresh, local fish. Chef Okuwa’s unique approach offers a refined yet approachable dining experience tailored for guests sailing through Japan with Princess.

“It’s a true honor to bring Makoto Ocean to Diamond and Sapphire Princess as they sail through the waters of my homeland and beyond,” said Chef Makoto Okuwa. “Sharing the spirit, tradition, and flavors of Japan with Princess guests is a deeply personal and meaningful opportunity for me.”
