by Julie Bouchner November 4, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions has released its 2027–2028 river cruise lineup, adding new itineraries and expanding capacity across key global regions.

The season will feature sailings in Egypt, India, Vietnam, and Europe. Connect will continue her spring and summer routes in Amsterdam and France. In 2027, sister ship Evolve will join the fleet and debut three Christmas sailings and one holiday itinerary, marking the brand’s first winter river program in Europe. Returning vessels include Charaidew II on India’s Brahmaputra River, The Jahan on the Mekong, and Oberoi Philae on the Nile, which will feature a visit to the new Grand Egyptian Museum.

“Our river journeys invite guests to see the world in a more intentional way — unhurried, intimate, and deeply connected to place,” said Natalya Leahy, CEO, Lindblad Expeditions. “We’re thrilled that our new European and Indian river expeditions have been so well received, and we’re delighted to offer even more ways to explore — including festive European Christmas market sailings. Because how you see the world matters, and that’s what makes our river collection so special.”

This season builds on a year of strong growth, extending the co-brand’s river program alongside new voyages from the Azores to the Arctic. The lineup reinforces National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions’ focus on curated itineraries, meaningful cultural experiences, and expert guidance, with each sailing led by seasoned Expedition Leaders and Field Staff.

Wellness on the River

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine November 4, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

On my first river cruise a decade ago, the “wellness” options were a few guided bike tours and a sundeck hot tub. On the first ride along the Rhine, the bikes were rolled out to the ship by the employees of a local bike shop, and within a half-mile, my seat fell off, nearly impaling my keister. At least I could immerse myself in the hot tub afterward. Um, no, the tub was as cold as the autumn chill, and it wouldn’t be repaired until the cruise ended. Ugh.

Wellness on river cruises has come a long way. Behemoth ocean cruise ships have offered wellness options for decades, ranging from spas to yoga classes and vegan meal options, but the trend is just bubbling to the surface on river ships, where the wellness trend is surging despite the much smaller size of the ships.

Wellness options on cruises was ranked as a top-10 trend in 2025 at the Global Wellness Summit. “Today’s river cruisers are increasingly looking for experiences that promote health and wellness, and we’re proud to offer these activities,” says Kristin Karst, co-owner of AmaWaterways, a line which has led the way in offering wellness on the world’s rivers.

PLOD, PEDAL, PADDLE

Walking and cycling excursions are offered on many river cruises, with the exploding popularity of e-bikes driving the bike-excursion trend. E-bikes allow couples to pedal together even when there’s a fitness gap because “pedal-assist” settings let the slower cyclist keep up with less effort. Walking excursions show off cities and towns in depth, with local guides offering lessons in history and architecture at a comfortable but calorie-burning stroll.

Emerald Cruises’ river trips, for example, include bike rides along the Danube, hikes in the Rhine Gorge, and canoeing in France. Travelers who prefer to explore on their own can get maps and advice from the cruise director before venturing out on foot or on an onboard bike or e-bike, which many river ships now carry. There’s often a riverside path where the ship docks that can be followed for miles.

YOGA, PICKLEBALL, PILATES

Soaking cucumbers in vinegar water is how pickles are made, so maybe it shouldn’t be that surprising that pickleball can be played over the rippling waters of major rivers. The pickleball court on AmaWaterways’ double-wide ship AmaMagna, unveiled last winter, is the first full-sized sports court on a river ship. Expect other river cruise companies to follow suit as the popularity of pickleball persists; many river ships already feature perimeter walking tracks, swimming pools, and hot tubs.

These aren’t the only nods to wellness on river ships. Riverside Luxury Cruises’ Riverside Mozart has a tidal-current pool for lap swimming; a spa with massage rooms, men’s and women’s saunas, and steam rooms; and a spacious gym. Many other river cruises have also added pools, spa facilities, gyms, onboard bikes, and even wellness “hosts” or “coaches” who lead yoga, Pilates, cardio, core, and even dance classes.

FRESH, LOCALLY SOURCED MEALS

On river cruises, the kitchen crew can pick up fresh produce, fish, and other ingredients daily along the river, a luxury that isn’t possible on most oceangoing ships. Another advantage over ocean ships: Many river-cruise chefs, because river ships seldom carry more than 200 passengers, can customize meals to accommodate individual .…

MSC Cruises Uses Shore Power in New York for the First Time

by Julie Bouchner November 3, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

MSC Cruises connected MSC Meraviglia to shore power at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, marking its first plug-in in New York after commissioning tests on October 26. The ship powered all onboard operations using shore electricity, shutting down engines and reducing local emissions.

Lynn Torrent, President, MSC Cruises North America, said: “We are proud to see the advancement of shore power at U.S. ports, including New York. Collaboration with local communities, elected officials and port partners is integral to make this progress possible. We are committed to connect whenever the shoreside technology is available as part of our ongoing efforts to improve local air quality and reduce carbon emissions.”

RELATED: MSC Cruises Expands Formula 1® Partnership

Andrew Kimball, President & CEO, New York City Economic Development Corporation, said: “NYCEDC is making crucial investments – from shore power upgrades at BCT and the recently approved Brooklyn Marine Terminal project to the forthcoming Manhattan Cruise Terminal master plan – ensuring the future of the cruise industry in New York City is sustainable, efficient, and economically competitive. MSC Cruises’ shore power connection this past weekend – and the connections of Cunard and Princess cruise ships in recent months – delivers on years of community feedback and marks a major step in electrifying New York’s waterfront.”

MSC Cruises has equipped all new ships with shore power since 2017 and continues retrofitting the rest of the fleet. Sixteen of 23 ships can plug in today, with 17 expected by year-end. Recent connections include La Spezia and Le Havre.

The Cruise Division’s luxury brand, Explora Journeys, successfully tested shore power connectivity for the first time in Europe with its second ship, EXPLORA II, at the same port the following day.

The company first used shore power in the U.S. in April 2025 when MSC World America plugged in at PortMiami. In 2024, it connected in 13 ports and completed 142 plug-ins, more than triple the previous year.

Azamara, known for its small ships and destination-focused cruises, has announced its Winter 2027–2028 season.

Running from October 16, 2027, to April 28, 2028, the lineup features 87 cruises with more late-night and overnight stays than ever before—over 150 late departures and 60 overnight visits. The itineraries are designed to give travelers extra time to explore each port, enjoy local nightlife, and experience destinations at their own pace.

“We’re incredibly excited to unveil our Winter 2027/2028 cruises, a season that truly embodies Azamara’s commitment to destination immersion,” said Michael Pawlus, Head of Itinerary Planning at Azamara. “From new maiden ports and rare journeys through Egypt to more combinable cruises, these itineraries were crafted to give guests more time to connect with each destination, creating experiences that linger long after the journey ends.”

This season introduces six new ports, new itineraries through Egypt, and more options to combine cruises into extended trips. With 30 pre-designed back-to-back combinations, travelers can easily explore multiple regions without extra planning. One example includes a 28-night journey combining a 14-night Vietnam & Hong Kong cruise with a 14-night Japan Intensive voyage, visiting 20 ports in total.

The six new ports include São Francisco do Sul and Paranaguá in Brazil, Fraser Island and Gladstone in Australia, Bimini in the Bahamas, and Algiers in Algeria. Highlights range from Bimini’s world-famous fishing to Fraser Island’s clear lakes and Algiers’ historic architecture.

Guests can also experience Egypt during its cooler season, from October to February, with extended stays in Luxor and Alexandria for a closer look at the country’s ancient sites and culture.

Azamara will return to several ports not visited in years, including Porto Belo and Rio Grande in Brazil, Sandakan in Malaysia, New Orleans in the U.S., and Coron in the Philippines.

Travelers who book early can save 30% and receive $4,500 in added value through Azamara’s “Always Azamara” inclusions. For details or to book, visit azamara.com.

Star Explorer Opens 2027 Europe Voyages

by Julie Bouchner October 27, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

Windstar Cruises will debut Star Explorer in 2027, the second all-suite yacht to join its fleet. The 224-guest ship will sail year-round in Europe, with voyages open through March 2028. Itineraries include Circumnavigating Ireland and Seven Gems of the Baltic, with longer stays and overnights in some of Europe’s top cities.

“Windstar has a long history of exploring in the Mediterranean and Europe, and the small size of this ship opens even more interesting places—including rivers,” said Christopher Prelog, president of Windstar Cruises. “We focus on itineraries that blend well-known destinations with unexpected gems our guests will love.”

More about Star Explorer

Star Explorer launches in December 2026 and will be christened on May 31, 2027, on London’s River Thames. The next day, she’ll pass under Tower Bridge and begin her first voyage—a circumnavigation of Ireland filled with scenic cliffs, historic castles, and lively pubs.

Built to reach places larger ships can’t, Star Explorer will sail directly into ports such as Rouen, Caen, Bordeaux, and central London. Itineraries include overnight stays and extended port calls for more time ashore. She’ll also make Windstar’s first call to Puerto Banús, Spain, the gateway to Marbella, and return to San Sebastián and Saint-Jean-de-Luz on the Basque coast.

2027 Europe Highlights

  • Seven Gems of the Baltic – 8 nights visiting Denmark, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Sweden, Finland, and Estonia, with two nights in Stockholm, an overnight in Tallinn, and stops in Riga, Bornholm, and Copenhagen.
  • Circumnavigating Ireland – 10 nights exploring Cork, Dingle, Galway, Londonderry, and Belfast, plus the Isles of Scilly and Waterford, with views of the Cliffs of Moher from sea.
  • Connoisseur’s Delight: Northern Spain & Portugal – 8 nights from Lisbon to Bordeaux, calling at Vigo, Gijón, Bilbao, and San Sebastián, with overnights in Biarritz and Bordeaux, showcasing Northern Spain’s rich food culture.
  • Impressionist France – 10 nights from Bordeaux to London, with overnights in Bordeaux, St. Malo, and Paris/Rouen, plus stops in La Rochelle, Belle-Île, and Caen. Guests can also sail the Seine River and visit the Normandy D-Day beaches and Bayeux Tapestry.

These itineraries take full advantage of the ship’s smaller size, allowing docking in central city ports like Bordeaux, Rouen, and London, and accessing exclusive harbors like Caen and San Sebastián.

Booking Information

  • Early Booking Offer: Save with early booking rates through November 15, 2025, plus an additional 5% off when paying in full with Pay Now, Save More.
  • Best Suite Selection: Booking early guarantees access to the most sought-after suites.
