Zadar: Where the Adriatic Sings

by Bill Panoff August 8, 2025
written by Bill Panoff

Tucked along Croatia’s stunning Dalmatian Coast, this city is not as instantly famous as Dubrovnik or Split — and that’s exactly why it feels like discovering a secret. Zadar blends ancient history with modern creativity on a coastline so gorgeous it feels like the impossibly blue sea has been painted there.

From the moment I stepped off the ship, Zadar felt alive. The sun was warm but gentle, the air carried the faint scent of salt and espresso, and the streets … oh, those streets! They’re a maze of polished stone, lined with Roman columns, medieval churches, and tucked-away cafés where locals sit for hours, sipping coffee and catching up on the day’s news.

History in Every Step

Zadar’s history reads like a who’s who of civilizations — Romans, Venetians, Austrians each left behind layers of architecture and culture. You can wander through Roman forums that are over 2,000 years old, step inside churches with golden altars, and lose yourself in narrow lanes that haven’t really changed in centuries. The city is walkable in that perfect way: small enough to explore on foot, but full of discoveries around every corner.

The Sea Organ & Sun Salutation

But here’s where Zadar truly stands apart — it’s a city that literally makes music from the sea. The Sea Organ is an architectural masterpiece built into the waterfront steps. As waves roll in, they push air through hidden tubes, creating this deep, haunting melody that seems to belong to the ocean itself. I stood there for ages, letting the sound wash over me.

Right next to it is The Greeting to the Sun, a massive solar-powered light installation that comes alive after dark. At sunset, it’s pure magic — the sky blazing in orange and pink, the water shimmering, and the lights beneath your feet dancing in time with the music of the waves.

A Food Lover’s Dream

And the food — where do I even begin? Zadar’s markets are overflowing with fresh produce, olives, and local cheeses. Seafood here is caught that morning, grilled to perfection, and served with a glass of crisp white wine from the nearby islands. One of my favorite meals was simple: just grilled calamari, fresh bread, and the kind of olive oil that makes you rethink every salad you’ve ever had.

Why Zadar Works So Well for Cruises

From a cruise perspective, Zadar is a dream port. The ship docks right near the Old Town, so you’re steps from everything — no long transfers, no wasted time. You can spend your day wandering those historic streets, relaxing by the waterfront, exploring museums, or taking a short trip to nearby wonders like the waterfalls of Krka National Park or the islands of the Kornati archipelago.

Why I’ll Never Forget It

As we sailed away from Zadar, I stood on deck listening to the faint sound of the Sea Organ in the distance. It felt like the city was saying goodbye in its own unique language. Zadar isn’t just a stop on an itinerary — it stays with you long after you’ve left, a perfect mix of old and new, calm and thrilling, intimate yet outgoing.

And here’s my advice: if you’re cruising the Adriatic, don’t just look forward to the big-name ports. Save some of your excitement for Zadar. Because once you hear the sea sing here, you’ll never forget it.

A Coral Comeback Vacation

by Lola Méndez August 7, 2025
written by Lola Méndez

On a balmy morning in the Maldives, I strolled to the dive shop at The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort. The previous evening, I had snorkeled in the Indian Ocean alongside massive marbled rays and nurse sharks underneath the nearby jetty. I’ve returned to the exact location for an altruistic marine-life experience.

I’m here to leave my mark by creating and planting a coral nursery frame for the resort’s growing coral garden. Coral restoration programs aid in preserving and restoring marine biodiversity. It’s a unique travel experience that is more than just fun — it’s educational and makes a lasting impact. Coral reefs are colonies of living creatures that provide oxygen and marine habitat. However, due to the human-induced climate crisis, coral reefs worldwide are threatened by increased ocean temperatures and ocean acidification, which cause bleaching events that result in reef death.

Keepers of the Coral

Awaiting me on the jetty is Hazel Araujo, a Guatemalan marine biologist who manages the on-site project. She’s gathered detached corals from the reef surrounding the atoll. Each piece is a few inches long. We’ll repurpose them to create new coral to grow and replenish the reef’s health. Coral reefs are incredibly fragile, biodiverse, and valuable ecosystems highly impacted by climate change.

“Coral reefs are not just beautiful — they’re essential. The health of our reefs is directly tied to the health of our planet,” Araujo says. Coral is at risk of becoming extinct by 2050, which would be disastrous as they provide habitat for countless species and protect coasts from being eroded away.

Wearing gloves, I carefully zip-tie each broken coral fragment to a frame. As I work on making the coral frame, Araujo teaches me about the risks corals face. “Corals are struggling, which is why active restoration efforts are important. 2024 was one of the largest coral-bleaching events recorded in the Maldives. The average sea surface temperature exceeded 32 degrees C (90 degrees F, above the maximum monthly mean for coral reefs in this region) due to climate change intensified by El Niño conditions,” she says.

During the 2024 mass-bleaching event, healthy coral cover dropped from 95 percent  to 25 percent around the St. Regis in the Maldives. When the temperature came back to normal, many coral colonies started to recover. “Within a few months, healthy coral coverage was .…

Steve Leland’s Cruising The Islands of Panama With Kontiki Expeditions

by Steve Leland July 29, 2025
written by Steve Leland

In keeping with our “Summer of Somewhere Else” travel, we found ourselves cruising through the serpentine waterways that wind their way through the islands of the Coiba National Park off the northwestern coast of Panama. It’s only natural to relate cruising in Panama to transiting the canal, but I couldn’t have imagined an adventure into an unspoiled paradise like this.

Palm trees. Sand. Sea water. Driftwood. Clouds on the horizon.

Isla Coiba. | Photo: Steve Leland

We had experienced Kontiki Expeditions’ unique boutique style of cruising two years ago on an Ecuadorian coastal cruise, and had planned on eventually taking part in their successful Costa Rican itineraries.  When an introductory cruise to these secluded Panamanian island retreats was announced, we could wait no longer.

Arriving on a flight from Panama City to David, Panama, we were met by Andres, who escorted us to our transfer bus. We drove through rural villages sprinkled along the  mountainous roads and arrived in the sleepy fishing village of Boca Chica. A short tender ride delivered us to our base of operations: Kontiki Wayra.

RELATED: Steve Leland’s Summer of Somewhere Else

No ordinary expedition vessel, this 18-passenger yacht incorporates a significant dose of neo-luxury along with a spirit of fun-loving adventure.

A forested coastline seen off the stern of M/V Kontiki Wayra, with a floating dock off the transom and plush outdoor sofas in the foreground.

The beautifully designed contemporary lounge, elegant staterooms, and exceptional spaciousness on the upper-level sundeck are all worthy of praise. Add in a hot tub, outdoor sofa seating, and even gym accessories, and you have the making of a great destination on its own.  But we’re here for an expedition, and the activity starts immediately after boarding.

A warm greeting by the ship’s crew is soon followed by “all ashore that’s going ashore,” as tonight we’re invited to the exclusive Isla Palenque Resort for a welcome dinner. Shortly after our tenders dock at the resort’s welcome center, set on a black-sand beach flanked by foliage, we are driven along a winding dirt road through dense palms, arriving at the resort’s restaurant set deep in the jungle.

Palapa roofs that protect the dining tables give rise to an authentic tropical vibe, and eight secluded casitas with convenient access to a deserted beach provide a stage for the blazing sunset.

A plate of thinly sliced translucent flesh, almost the color of crushed ice scattered with green leaves and shreds of orange - carrots? cheese? - with something red - diced bell pepper, perhaps.

Thinly sliced grouper ceviche. | Photo: Steve Leland

Thinly sliced grouper ceviche, beef tenderloin, and fresh catch of the day supplemented by traditional appetizers give we diners a culinary experience of regional authenticity.

An “expedition” is generally described as “a journey taken for the purpose of learning something new” and our intrepid itinerary boldly checks that box. Snorkeling over colorful reefs reveals the biodiversity of the area’s marine life.  A mid-morning picnic is set up on a white-sand beach, and after lunch is served on board, it’s off on a Zodiac exploration to observe breaching humpback whales. And this is just Day One.

Seeking out the sea-nery

With luxury on the sea and adventure in the trees, we sought out howler and white-faced monkeys and the endemic giant rodents called agouti on a nature hike through a jungle that resembles Jurassic Park. We experience a dark chapter of Panamanian history with a visit to the now closed and derelict Coiba Island Penal Colony followed by a wildlife exploration through the mangroves. The air was thick with humidity and with bird calls emanating from the trees as we ventured into what could easily have been a nature documentary.

In addition to the excitement of the excursions, snorkeling adventures and daily shuttles to remote beaches, Wayra’s full complement of water toys provides outstanding aquatic enjoyment. Slipping over the side of the yacht and zipping down the massive inflatable water slide is a thrilling experience, and the large floating platform lowered into the sea makes for convenient access to paddleboards and kayaks. Four SeaBobs (high-tech motorized water scooters) are a huge hit, gliding guests across and under the waters of the Pacific.

An aerial view of Kontiki Wayra with the kayak dock deployed, possibly taken by drone.

Automated twin doors open onto the stylish coziness of Wayra’s lounge and dining area. Breakfasts and lunches with regional specialties are served buffet-style, but when the sun sets, colorful plating and full-service dinners feature local seafood as well as steaks, pork, and chicken followed by delectable desserts.

We came for the views and left with stories that will outlast any souvenirs. For those that are passionate about expedition travel, the barefoot comfort of Kontiki Wayra  blends seamlessly with a thoughtfully curated cultural exploration of an untouched island paradise, where sustainability and respect for nature takes center stage.

The Commandments of the Alaska Highway

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine July 28, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

It’s just another road. It’s just another road.

That’s as good a mantra as any when you find yourself facing unusual circumstances along the Alaska Highway: Maybe it’s a herd of bison that have planted themselves across both lanes, or “just” the long, tumbling drop that occasionally beckons from one side or the other of the narrower, windier sections of blacktop.

But that thinking goes straight out the window when you lift your eyes from the asphalt in front of you and soak in the grandeur of your surroundings: The scenery seems to constantly rearrange itself, from glittering mountain lakes to boreal forest, but the austere-looking mountain peaks on the horizon are your constant companions, with seemingly endless wilderness spilling out from them in every direction, broken only by the thin thread of asphalt you’re on.

DO do it for the ‘Gram. Seriously.

As commutes go, the Alaska Highway is a long one: It covers a solid 1,387 miles from Dawson Creek, British Columbia, then through the Yukon Territory, before ending in Delta Junction, Alaska — plus however many miles it takes for you to hit Dawson Creek in the first place, and wherever you’re going in Alaska.

Or, maybe you’re only using part of the highway as a thoroughfare for other destinations in Canada. Either way, this isn’t just carpe diem: It’s carpe highway miles, and on a road like the Alaska Highway, even the most leisurely of travelers will need to be conscious of how many miles they have left to go before they sleep.

So if you know you’re nearing an iconic photo opportunity along the road? Pull over and take the picture. Seriously. On a trip like this, the regrets over opportunities lost can enter a whole new dimension.

If the mosquitoes swarm you while you’re out there — and in some places they will — leave the vehicle door shut while you’re outside. Then sprint a quick lap around the RV, or do a little loop beside it, before hurtling inside. I’m pretty sure the person who first suggested this approach to me was making fun, but I’m convinced that it really does help.

It’s also a lot faster and easier to do with a car than an RV, but anyway…

Some of the most iconic places that it’s worth losing a bit of blood to the Canadian mosquitoes, which are every bit as vicious as their Alaskan counterparts, include: The “You are now entering the world famous Alaska Highway” sign at mile-marker 0 in Dawson Creek, which is mercifully light on mosquitoes; stunning Muncho Lake; Liard River Hot Springs; the signpost forest in Watson Lake; the “Welcome to Alaska” sign at the Alaska/Canada border; and the triangle-topped post (with life-size sculptures of mosquitoes) that marks the end of the highway in Delta Junction, Alaska.

Speaking of wildlife like mosquitoes, keep your camera handy for the many encounters you’re likely to have throughout your drive. You’d have to work very hard not to see at least a few bears on the broad verge along the highway. Other critters you might see include moose, wolves, elk, lynx, foxes, herds of free-ranging horses in the Yukon, and bison.

DON’T hit the speed bumps

Speaking of bison, they’re huge — males can stand 6 feet tall at the shoulder and weigh a ton — and they like to hang out in and near the road. If speeding around a curve on a narrow, two-lane strip of asphalt and seeing several bison-sized speed bumps in the road sounds horrifying — and spoiler alert, it is — imagine doing that in the dark.

That is why you’re going to drive the speed limit in Canada, and you’re not going to drive in the dark. Or if you absolutely must do some nighttime driving, at least save the stretch around Muncho Lake and Liard River Hot Springs, both places the bison are known to frequent, for ….

written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

For visitors to Florida looking for ways to preserve our precious planet, here are some eco-friendly hotels suggested by Wallace Cortazar, a noted Miami advocate of sustainability:

*THE GABRIEL SOUTH BEACH HOTEL limits the use of plastic and has omitted the use of paper products in its rooms.

*THE GATES HOTEL SOUTH BEACH is a Tier-2 member of the plastic-free 305 program. Management has eliminated all single-use plastics.

*THE MARKER KEY WEST HARBOR RESORT has installed two public sunscreen dispensers to encourage the use of mineral sunblock, which benefits the skin and also works toward preserving coral reefs, supporting ocean conservation.

Holland America Line Enhances Onboard Entertainment

by Porthole Cruise and Travel July 24, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Holland America Line is elevating its onboard entertainment with exciting enhancements—from expanded live music offerings and a reimagined entertainment team structure to all-new World Stage productions and enriched cultural programming.

The cruise line has already begun implementing the changes on six of its ships, with plans to expand the new programming fleetwide over the next year.

“Our live music is second to none, and guests have asked for more, so we’re delivering on this with higher energy, more authentic local music and more variety in entertainment on every sailing,” said Michael Smith, senior vice president of guest experience and product development for Holland America Line. “It’s all about enriching the journey and creating unforgettable experiences for our guests, no matter where they sail.”

Entertainment Enhancements

Holland America Line’s ships Nieuw Statendam, Zaandam, Zuiderdam, Volendam, Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam have already enhanced their music offerings, featuring expanded World Stage show schedules and live music every night of the cruise. The debut of Vivace, a new string duo or trio, is offered across all itineraries and marks the return of onboard classical music performances.

The cruise line is also introducing a live band, The Dam Band, to accompany both production shows and guest entertainers on the World Stage. Programming will include surprise cabaret performances and more live music in the Crow’s Nest, Lido Pool and the Ocean Bar.

Additionally, the cruise line will debut a new regional soloist program, with culturally-inspired performances unique to each itinerary. Breton Thunder will return in an expanded capacity with shows on World Stage and pop-up performances across the ship on cruises to Canada and New England on Volendam and Zuiderdam. The upgrades will continue rolling out across the fleet through the fall.

A New Entertainment Team Structure

The revitalized entertainment and enrichment team structure features a new, more dynamic role for the Cruise Director. More than half of the ships will see an update to the role by Aug. 1, 2025, with the Cruise Director serving as the charismatic host of the voyage, supported by an Assistant Cruise Director and entertainment team. Guests will enjoy hands-on classes, cooking demonstrations, tastings, game shows and themed parties.

Holland America Line is reintroducing Travel Guides, who will host Q&A sessions and provide personalized travel advice for each destination. The expanded Activities Crew is responsible for leading trivia, game shows, cooking demonstrations and art classes. The new structure will be in effect across the fleet by the end of 2025.

A New Welcome Show

Eurodam saw the debut of the “Welcome Aboard” show in June. The show takes place on the first night of each cruise and gives guests a glimpse of the voyage’s entertainment and enrichment offerings. “Welcome Aboard” is expected to appear on all ships by summer 2026 and features Port Talks, Up Close presentations and the Orange Party.

World Stage Shows

Show offerings aboard Volendam, Zaandam and Nieuw Amsterdam offer a variety of entertainment types:

  • Curtain Up: Perfect for the musical and Broadway enthusiast, Curtain Up features numbers from “Jersey Boys,” “West Side Story,” “Hairspray” and “Chicago.”
  • Dance!: Guests will enjoy choreography from around the world, including the Tango, Charleston, Rumba and Cha-Cha.
  • Rock Britannia: Audiences will enjoy the greatest rock hits from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s, including songs by Rod Stewart, the Rolling Stones and John Lennon.
  • Solid Gold: A ’70s show featuring groovy vibes and hit songs from artists like the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Elton John and Donna Summer.
  • Crossroads: Country and folk are the focus of this musical crossroads with hits by Dolly Parton, Neil Diamond, Glen Campbell and Johnny Cash.
  • It’s A Swing Thing: Hit songs like “Dancin’ Fool,” “Beyond the Sea,” “The Lady Is a Tramp” and “Feeling Good,” and swinging rhythms will transport audiences back in time.

The cruise line currently offers nightly live music at Billboard Onboard and Rolling Stone Lounge, as well as B.B. King’s Blues Club on Pinnacle Class ships. Up Close presentations share local stories and culture with guests. On Alaskan sailings, onboard wildlife experts help guests spot animals, and National Park Service rangers offer real-time commentary as the ship travels through Glacier Bay National Park.

The City Medieval

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine July 24, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

For 800 years, the belfry in Bruges has stood as a sentinel looking down at the city’s comings and goings. Its long shadow caresses the intricate brickwork buildings and Gothic architecture surrounding the Market Square. The clock face quietly marks the passing of time, while the chiming bells are the proud symbol of the city’s power and prosperity.

Last year, an incredible 8 million visitors thronged to the UNESCO-designated city to gaze in wonder at the art and architecture and explore its cobbled streets. The majority of day trippers drop in for just a few hours. To prevent this, the mayor, Dirk De Fauw, has introduced measures to discourage overtourism. From January 1, 2027 day guests will be charged €4 ($4.53), the same rate that currently applies to those staying overnight. The latest visitor strategy from Visit Bruges is focused on encouraging longer overnight stays and more off-season travel.

With this at the forefront of my mind, I adopt a slower approach to my short vacation here, savoring every second of my stay. By doing less, I plan to see more and immerse myself fully in the city’s history.

A Bruges State of Mind

Instead of hailing a cab or catching a bus, I pull on my sneakers and walk 20 minutes from the station to Hotel Bourgoensch Hof. It is next to the opulent and pricier four-star Relais Bourgondisch Cruyce. Both establishments make an excellent base for exploring the city and share the same incredible courtyard location, yards from Rozenhoedkaai — Rosary Quay — one of the most Instagrammable spots in the city.

To avoid the crowds, I get up early to check out Market Square and watch the horses paw the ground impatiently, waiting for their first carriage passengers to hop aboard. I plan my ascent of the 366 steps of the belfry to coincide with them opening the doors. This means I have cleverly sidestepped the long queues of day trippers who will pitch up soon. The climb leaves me breathless, but the views from the 272-foot tower are incredible. Afterward, I linger as the carillon bells ring out brightly over the city. I close my eyes and imagine all the people who might have heard them chime over the centuries.

I head to Burg Square and enter the quiet, contemplative calm of the Basilica of the Holy Blood. Inside the inner sanctum, there’s a sacred relic said to have been collected by Joseph of Arimathea. Next door is the Stadhuis, or city hall, where exquisite murals show notable figures from Bruges’ past. In the neighboring anteroom, an augmented-reality model demonstrates how the city’s prosperity and its connection to the North Sea are intertwined.

Next, I strike out on foot to visit one of four historic windmills in Kruisvest. At Sint-Janshuismolen, I watch flour being ground as it would have been done in bygone days. The surrounding area is a million miles removed from the busy city center, so I delay my return by watching the world go by at the aptly named De Windmolen pub.

Quietly By Canal

No trip to Bruges is complete without taking a boat trip through the serpentine network of canals that thread their way through the city streets. I pass historic landmarks like St. Bonifacius or Lover’s Bridge, and then the Beguinage and Jan van Eyck Square. I languorously stretch my fingers upwards, trying to touch the brickwork as the boat passes under a bridge, and a pristine white swan, a symbol of the city’s wealth, serenely floats past.

To avoid unnecessary stress, I recommend booking a table at….

Norwegian Cruise Line Announces 500+ Voyages for 2027 Season

by Julie Bouchner July 23, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

Norwegian Cruise Line has released its spring and summer 2027 deployment, featuring more than 500 voyages across 20 ships. Cruises will depart from nearly 30 homeports, including Miami, Seattle, New York City, Southampton, and Rome (Civitavecchia).

Sailing from April through October 2027, the itineraries cover over 150 ports in 59 countries and include more than 170 overnight stays in destinations such as Istanbul, Reykjavik, and Bermuda.

“We’re proud to be the cruise line of choice for travelers who want MORE out of their vacation – MORE freedom, MORE destinations and MORE unforgettable experiences,” said David J. Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line. “Our spring and summer 2027 deployment clearly brings our promise to life, offering something for everyone. Whether guests are hopping between European cities nearly every day, taking in Alaska’s natural beauty from ships custom-built to bring the outdoors in, or kicking back on the beach with family and friends at one of our two resort-style destinations, there’s no shortage of ways to relax, explore, and create unforgettable memories. I’m especially excited about the all-new experiences coming to Great Stirrup Cay, our private island in the Bahamas, that will truly provide guests with a variety of options —it’s all about giving guests MORE of what they love.”
