Port of Québec Completes First Year as Year-Round Cruise Port

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 17, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

In 2025, the Port of Québec hosted cruise ships across nearly the entire year, from late January through early November, showcasing its ability to operate in all seasons. Cruise calls occurred almost every month, reinforcing the city’s position as a year-round travel destination.

The season welcomed close to 140,000 passengers on 103 ship visits, representing 35 vessels from 22 cruise lines. Québec also served as the first or final stop for 21 cruises, reflecting strong confidence from cruise operators in the port’s services and experience.

“This first cruise season to stretch from the depths of winter to the peak of fall reflects the transformation of the Port of Québec,” said Olga Farman, CEO, Port of Québec. “By spreading the season out, we’re showing that our Port can be a major contributor to the development of winter tourism in the Capitale Nationale. Together, with our partners and teams, we’re shaping a port that lives up to our vision for Québec City: ambitious, with our eyes firmly on the horizon.”

Winter Season Kicks Off with Polar Highlight

The season opened in January with the polar icebreaker Ponant Commandant Charcot, giving passengers a rare winter perspective of Québec City. The ship is confirmed to return in 2027, reflecting strong partnerships and growing interest in winter cruising.

New Ships Make Their Debut

Virgin Voyages introduced its newest ship, Brilliant Lady, to Québec City, joined by first-time visits from Celebrity Silhouette, Seven Seas Splendor, Oceania Cruises’ Allura, and Princess Cruises’ Majestic Princess, demonstrating the city’s rising appeal to major cruise lines.

Québec Recognized Globally

For the third consecutive year, Québec City was named Best Canada/New England Cruise Destination in Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine’s Reader Choice Award, highlighting its stunning scenery and welcoming atmosphere.

Cruise Industry Boosts Local Economy

International cruises drive significant economic benefits for the Capitale-Nationale region, generating $172 million in 2024. Beyond direct spending, the industry supports the local supply chain.

“This first year -round cruise season was made possible by industry players working together to make tourism development more balanced and productive for the region,” said Lucie Charland, Chair of the Board of Destination Québec cité. “By spreading calls over the year, we are not only encouraging more stable economic spin-offs for our local businesses but also creating a better experience for visitors and residents alike. This 360° approach, built on collaboration and responsible performance, established Québec City as a premier destination on the St. Lawrence. ”

Next Generation Gets Onboard

The Port welcomed transportation and tourism students, offering behind-the-scenes tours of operations and docked ships, strengthening connections between education and the cruise industry.

Holland America Line Debuts New “Fosse and Verdon” Show on Koningsdam

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 17, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Holland America Line has introduced a new show that’s already generating a lot of buzz on board. “Fosse and Verdon, The Duet That Changed Broadway” made its debut on Koningsdam last weekend, marking the first time guests can see this exclusive production at sea. Produced in partnership with RWS Global and reconstructed by The Verdon Fosse Legacy, the show brings an all-new live musical and multimedia tribute to the groundbreaking work of Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon.

Staged in the World Stage theater, the 45-minute production uses 270-degree surround screens to display archival letters, audio, and footage while a cast of 12 performs musical numbers inspired by Fosse’s original choreography. The show features music from “Sweet Charity,” “Liza with a Z,” “Cabaret,” “Chicago,” and more, with live vocals from the cast.

“After months of collaboration and anticipation, it’s exciting to finally see ‘Fosse and Verdon, The Duet That Changed Broadway’ take the stage, creating a breathtaking fusion of Broadway and innovation at sea,” said Joe Chantry, vice president of entertainment and enrichment for Holland America Line. “It is an honor to share the artistry and legacy of Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon with our guests in such an immersive, one-of-a-kind experience.”

The show also marks the start of an expanded partnership between RWS Global and The Verdon Fosse Legacy®, which has granted RWS Global exclusive rights to develop new performances inspired by Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon. Holland America Line will hold exclusive cruise rights to these productions for the next five years.

“The idea for this show started after conversations with Noah Fosse about how we could bring his family’s work to new audiences,” said Craig Laurie, Chief Creative Officer at RWS Global. “Because we work extensively in the cruise industry, a shipboard production was a natural direction, and Holland America Line was the right partner. Over the past six months, our team developed a documentary-style experience that combines Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon’s personal and professional stories, supported by never-before-seen memorabilia from the Fosse family. Our goal was to create a show that reflects their style and the partnership behind their work.”

Koningsdam is currently the only ship featuring the new production. Guests on board will also find a curated lineup of films on in-stateroom televisions showcasing Fosse’s work as a director, choreographer, or performer, including “Cabaret,” “Chicago,” “The Pajama Game,” and more.

As the partnership continues, additional entertainment offerings inspired by Fosse and Verdon are expected to roll out, expanding Holland America Line’s commitment to bringing world-class stage productions to sea.

MSC Cruises Expands World Class Fleet with Two New Ship Orders

by Julie Bouchner November 12, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

MSC Cruises has expanded its partnership with Chantiers de l’Atlantique with an order for two additional World Class ships, the seventh and eighth in the series, set for delivery in 2030 and 2031.

The announcement took place during a ceremony at the Saint Nazaire shipyard in France, which also marked two major milestones for ships currently under construction: the float-out of MSC World Asia and the coin ceremony for MSC World Atlantic.

Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman, Cruise Division, MSC Group, said: “We mark a proud moment today for MSC Cruises and Chantiers de l’Atlantique as we celebrate important milestones for our future – the float out of MSC World Asia, the coin ceremony of MSC World Atlantic and the order of two new ships. The World Class platform is a symbol of our vision to set new standards for the future of cruising. These are some of the most energy efficient ships in the world and we continue our commitment to LNG, ensuring we are ready for future renewable fuels. We look forward to continuing with our innovative and successful collaboration with Chantiers de L’Atlantique – our long-term partner for more than 20 years.”

The €3.5 billion order brings MSC Cruises’ total investment in France this year to nearly €7 billion and €10.5 billion overall for the World Class fleet. The move highlights the company’s confidence in the cruise industry’s continued growth and its commitment to shipbuilding in France and Europe.

Construction of the seventh and eighth World Class ships will begin in 2029, continuing the long-running partnership between MSC Cruises and Chantiers de l’Atlantique.

RELATED: MSC Seascape Arrives in Galveston Ahead of MSC Cruises’ First Sailing from Texas

The World Class series represents MSC Cruises’ most advanced ships, offering a mix of modern design, comfort, and sustainable technology. Each vessel features unique onboard areas designed for entertainment, relaxation, and exploration, reflecting the brand’s focus on creating a dynamic guest experience.

The fleet currently includes MSC World Europa (2022), MSC World America (2025), MSC World Asia (2026), and MSC World Atlantic (2027), with four additional ships scheduled through 2031. The two new orders remain subject to financing, as is standard practice in the industry.

Laurent Castaing, General Manager, Chantiers de l’Atlantique, said: “We are deeply grateful to MSC Cruises for their renewed confidence. What our shipyard is achieving today is truly exceptional — four new ships ordered in 2025! The World Class series, now totaling eight vessels, is a testament to our teams’ expertise and to MSC’s vision. It exemplifies our shared commitment to elevating the passenger experience while advancing environmental performance.”

MSC World Asia Float Out

The float out of MSC World Asia marks a major construction milestone, as the ship first touches water and moves into its final build phase. Scheduled for delivery in November 2026, the ship will begin seven-night Mediterranean sailings in December, visiting Barcelona, Marseille, Genoa, Rome (Civitavecchia), Messina, and Valletta.

MSC World Atlantic Coin Ceremony

The coin ceremony for MSC World Atlantic also took place, a long-standing maritime tradition symbolizing blessings and good fortune for the vessel. The ship is expected to debut in 2027, offering Caribbean itineraries from Port Canaveral beginning with the winter 2027–2028 season.

Lynn Torrent, President of MSC Cruises North America, served as godmother for MSC World Atlantic. She oversees the brand’s commercial and operational strategy across the region and continues to play a key role in expanding MSC Cruises’ presence in the North American market.

Torrent said: “It was a true honor to fulfill such a pivotal role in the journey of bringing MSC World Atlantic to life. This ship will build on everything our guests and travel partners love about MSC World America, which has been sailing from Miami since April. We are already planning new spaces and experiences on board that are designed to elevate our blend of European style and American comfort, and we can’t wait to reveal them.”

Agnès Sahores, Smart Yard Improvement Manager at Chantiers de l’Atlantique, served as the shipyard’s godmother. With 25 years at the company, she leads initiatives to enhance performance, innovation, and environmental efficiency.

The ceremony reflected MSC Cruises’ steady growth and its ongoing collaboration with Chantiers de l’Atlantique to build the next generation of cruise ships.

Explora Journeys and Jannik Sinner Launch The Effort of Effortless Campaign

by Julie Bouchner November 12, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

Explora Journeys, the luxury ocean travel brand of the MSC Group, has launched The Effort of Effortless, an eight-episode mini-series featuring Global Brand Ambassador and World No. 1 tennis player Jannik Sinner. The first episode premiered on November 11, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the focus, dedication, and precision that make excellence appear effortless.

“At Explora Journeys, we believe true luxury lies in balance – where every detail is crafted with intention yet experienced with ease. Jannik embodies this philosophy perfectly: his mastery feels effortless, yet it is the result years of discipline and devotion. Together, we invite guests to rediscover the art of slowing down and finding purpose at sea.” said Anna Nash, President of Explora Journeys.

The series explores the shared values between Explora Journeys and Jannik Sinner: authenticity, focus, and intention. It invites viewers to slow down, reconnect, and experience life with a clear sense of purpose while highlighting three central themes: Excellence in Every Detail, The Value of Craft, and Balance and Clarity.

Excellence in Every Detail

Jannik Sinner’s calm, precise style is built on years of dedication and teamwork. That same approach shapes every aspect of Explora Journeys, where thoughtful design and seamless service create experiences that feel effortless.

The Value of Craft
Sinner’s precision mirrors the attention to detail found across the brand’s ships, from tailored wellness programs to carefully prepared cuisine. Both reflect a belief that true quality comes from consistency and care, not excess.

Balance and Clarity
For Sinner, balance is key both on and off the court. Explora Journeys reflects that same idea at sea, encouraging guests to pause, recharge, and find focus. The Effort of Effortless shows how calm and discipline can turn effort into art.

Bottoms Up

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine November 12, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Without being too dramatic, Ushuaia is at the end of the world. Geographically, that is.

In the land known as Tierra Del Fuego, just at the point where the South American continent curls to a stop, this Argentinian city is near where land ends and the sea that separates it from Antarctica begins. Come December, up to six cruise ships visit here daily, collecting passengers for the often-bumpy ride to the White Continent. Having traveled this far, it’s worth spending time before or after your cruise to see the sights of this frontier city.

Mountain majesty

Whether flying, cruising or taking the bus to Ushuaia, you can’t help but notice the mountains looming at its back. Even during the southern hemisphere’s summer, when Antarctic cruises are at their busiest, those mountains are capped with snow; not surprising for somewhere that’s just 2,432 miles from the south pole.

Ushuaia’s tourist information center is friendly, informative, and a useful place to start your visit. Ask about the free-to-use ‘End of the World’ passport stamps and don’t forget to take a handy city map before you leave. Outside the information center, the waterfront walkway is a scenic place to stroll and see which ships are in port on their way to Antarctica.

Frontier history

Previously occupied by the Yámana people, Ushuaia declares itself to be the world’s southernmost city. Founded by British missionaries, first a mini gold rush and then a penal colony swelled the population. The legacy of that penal colony can still be seen today in the form of the Tren del Fin del Mundo (“End of the World Train”). This 4.3-mile railway once transported building materials but now carries tourists for about $45pp behind small steam locomotives. It’s a fun ride that starts just outside of Ushuaia, passes through scenic woods, and ends in Tierra Del Fuego National Park.

History hunters will also be delighted by the Museo Marítimo y Presidio (“Maritime and Prison Museum”), housed in a building as austere as the rocky landscapes beyond. Step inside and you’ll see the cells and accoutrements of the building’s previous life as a prison, which closed in 1947. One of the museum’s wings focuses on the prison’s history, another houses an art gallery, and another tells the local native people’s story.

Upstairs, a fascinating maritime exhibition is filled with model ships, and another room contains photographs of historic expeditions and displays about Antarctic animals. In short, this museum is an excellent-value one-stop-shop for deep and memorable insights into Ushuaia and the continent beyond the sea.

Waterways and wilderness

Before contemplating the Drake Passage on your way to Antarctica, test the water on a considerably shorter and smoother trip around the Beagle Channel. On these boat tours, you’ll encounter large sea lion colonies and several.…

Disney Cruise Line Christens Disney Destiny

by Julie Bouchner November 11, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

Disney Cruise Line welcomed its newest ship, Disney Destiny, on Monday evening with a christening ceremony at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale.

“For more than 100 years, we have entertained our fans in new and innovative ways, connecting them to the Disney stories they love,” said Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences, during the celebration. “Disney Cruise Line is a powerful part of that legacy because our ships become brand ambassadors that travel the globe and bring joy to our guests in ways only Disney can. Now, the Disney Destiny makes its own extraordinary entry into our growing fleet.”

More about the Christening Ceremony

  • The event featured a multi-tiered stage, drone effects, scenic projections on the ship, live music, and a full vocal ensemble.

  • Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences, and Joe Schott, President of Disney Signature Experiences, delivered remarks before godmother Susan Egan officially blessed the ship.

  • The celebration combined concert-style energy with signature Disney theatrical elements.

  • The production included a custom pop-rock medley of music from “Hercules,” “The Lion King,” “Frozen,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Black Panther,” and more.

  • The musical lineup highlighted the stories that inspired the experiences aboard Disney Destiny.

  • The night ended with a champagne pop and the official christening blessing from Susan Egan.

  • Egan, known for voicing Megara in “Hercules” and originating Belle on Broadway, was chosen as godmother for her strong connection to Disney storytelling.

“The Disney Cruise Line team, alongside our Disney Imagineers, have invested years of their expertise, creativity and dedication into this beautiful ship,” emphasized Joe Schott, President of Disney Signature Experiences. “They have created something truly spectacular.”

Discover Your Destiny Initiative

To celebrate the launch, Disney Cruise Line is partnering with local organizations in Florida and the Bahamas to inspire students through the arts. The “Discover Your Destiny” program introduces students to theater, entertainment careers, and Disney’s creative professionals, encouraging them to explore their talents and dream big.

Disney Cruise Line’s Fleet Expansion

Disney Destiny marks another milestone in Disney Cruise Line’s multi-year expansion. The fleet is expected to grow to 13 ships by 2031. Upcoming additions include Disney Adventure homeporting in Singapore in 2026, a fourth Wish-class ship in 2027, a brand-new ship class debuting in 2029, and Disney cruise vacations launching in Japan in partnership with Oriental Land Co., Ltd. in 2029.

As the sister ship to Disney Wish (2022) and Disney Treasure (2024), Disney Destiny brings stories of heroes and villains from Disney, Pixar, and Marvel to life. Onboard highlights include:

  • Dining inspired by “The Lion King” and Marvel

written by Julie Bouchner

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. has confirmed a newbuild order with Fincantieri for a third Prestige-Class vessel for Regent Seven Seas Cruises. The ship is scheduled for delivery in 2033, marking the next step in the brand’s luxury growth plan.

Following Seven Seas Prestige in 2026 and the second Prestige-Class ship in 2030, the third vessel will continue the brand’s signature design and all-inclusive experience.

“This newbuild order continues our measured, strategic expansion within the luxury space, providing guests with yet another way to experience the unrivaled aboard The World’s Most Luxurious Fleet,” said Jason Montague, Chief Luxury Officer at Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. “It reflects our confidence in the growing demand for Regent’s best-in-class offering and reaffirms our long-standing partnership with Fincantieri, one rooted in craftsmanship and shared pursuit of perfection.”

Regent’s Prestige-Class ships are the brand’s first new class in 10 years, following the success of the Explorer-Class. Seven Seas Prestige will be 40 percent larger than previous Regent ships but will carry only 10 percent more guests. At 77,000 tons, with room for 822 guests and 630 crew members, it will offer some of the highest space and service ratios in the industry.

All suites onboard feature balconies and span 12 categories, including four new suite types. Highlights include the Skyview Regent Suite, the largest all-inclusive suite at sea, plus new two-level Skyview and Grand Loft Suites.

Public spaces include the Starlight Atrium and the art-inspired Galileo’s Bar. The ship will offer 11 dining options, with an additional venue to be announced. New choices include Azure, a Mediterranean mezze-style restaurant, alongside favorites like Chartreuse, Prime 7, and Pacific Rim.

“Our long-term strategic expansion with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd., established over the past years through multiple successful orders, continues to strengthen our collaboration, especially within the ultra-luxury segment represented by Regent Seven Seas Cruises,” commented Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri. “This latest contract confirms the trust NCLH places in Fincantieri’s expertise to deliver innovative, sustainable, and finely crafted ships that meet the evolving aspirations of the luxury cruise market.”

With the third Prestige-Class vessel now underway, Regent Seven Seas Cruises reinforces its commitment to growing its ultra-luxury fleet and delivering elevated travel experiences for future guests.
