What to Expect on a Valentine’s Day Cruise

by Porthole Cruise and Travel February 12, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

With Valentine’s Day just two days away, if you’re embarking on a Valentine’s Day cruise, you’re in for a treat! Here’s what to expect and how to make the most of your romantic getaway at sea.

Romantic Atmosphere

Boarding the ship, you’ll be enveloped in a romantic ambiance. Cruise lines often enhance the atmosphere for February 14th with heart-shaped decorations, twinkling lights, and floral arrangements.

Special Valentine’s Day Events

Cruise itineraries are packed with events for couples. Expect romantic dance classes, couples’ yoga sessions, and sunset cocktail parties. Participating in these activities enhances the mood and allows you to bond with your partner.

Candlelit Dining Experiences

Dining on a cruise is a delight, especially on Valentine’s Day. Many venues offer special menus. Enjoy a candlelit dinner with live music—perhaps a string quartet. Make reservations early as these dinners can fill up quickly. Consider adding champagne or chocolate-covered strawberries.

Pampering at the Spa

Treat yourselves to a couple’s massage at the onboard spa. Many cruises offer special treatments for Valentine’s Day, like chocolate therapy or rose-scented massages. This experience enhances relaxation and intimacy.

Intimate Stateroom Surprises

Surprise your partner with in-room touches. Many cruise lines offer add-ons like flower arrangements, personalized notes, or a bottle of wine. You can plan an intimate night in with room service and movies.

Stargazing on the Deck

One of the most beautiful experiences on a cruise is stargazing. The absence of city lights allows for a dazzling array of stars. Bring a cozy blanket, find a secluded spot on the deck, and enjoy the moment together.

Destinations

Many Valentine’s Day cruises stop at beautiful locations. Whether tropical or historic, each offers unique experiences. Explore a beach together or enjoy a seaside dinner.

Captivating Entertainment

In the evenings, cruise ships feature live music, Broadway-style shows, and themed parties. Choose a show or event that appeals to both of you to continue celebrating love.

With romantic experiences and stunning settings, your cruise will be an unforgettable celebration of love. Bon voyage and Happy Valentine’s Day!

PortMiami Achieves Record-Breaking Day

by Julie Bouchner February 10, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

On February 8, 2025, PortMiami, set a record by docking 10 cruise ships. The ships included Carnival Magic, Carnival Sunrise, Holland America Zaandam, MSC Seascape, Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Gem, Oceania Sirena, Icon of the Seas, Independence of the Seas, and Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady. Approximately 68,000 passengers are expected aboard these ships.

“It is no surprise PortMiami and the cruise industry continue to break records,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “PortMiami is the departure choice for all major cruise lines. As a destination, Miami-Dade is undoubtedly the center of world cruise tourism with incredible weather, culture and unlimited options for exciting experiences.”

The 2025 cruise season features several new ships, including Cunard’s Queen Anne (January), MSC World America (April), Norwegian Aqua (April), Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas (August), Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth (October), Virgin Voyages’ Brilliant Lady (October), and Oceania Cruises’ Allura (November).

Additionally, a significant milestone was achieved on June 17, 2024, with the launch of shore power at PortMiami. This technology allows cruise ships to turn off their engines and connect to electrical power while docked, reducing emissions and noise. PortMiami is the first major cruise port on the U.S. eastern seaboard to offer shore power at five cruise berths, thanks to a partnership with Miami-Dade County, Carnival Corporation, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, Royal Caribbean Group, Virgin Voyages, and Florida Power & Light Company.

Pan Am Invites Name Suggestions for New Clipper

by Julie Bouchner February 6, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

Pan Am is inviting aviation enthusiasts to help name its first Clipper in many years. The newly named aircraft will launch a private chartered jet experience along the historic Southern and Northern Transatlantic Routes, departing from JFK in June 2025. This 12-day journey, starting June 16, is limited to 50 guests and features a Boeing 757 with all Business Class lie-flat seating. Travelers will stay at select iconic hotels in Bermuda, Portugal, France, England, and Ireland. The new Clipper will join a prestigious legacy of over 100 past Clippers under the Pan Am brand.

“The tradition of naming aircraft ‘clipper’ dates back to the 19th century’s fast sailing boats under the same name, creating a link to the great ocean liners of the past,” explains Craig Carter, CEO of Pan American World Airways and owner of Pan Am Brands. “As we re-introduce the iconic Pan Am brand through private jet experiences, carrying on this naming tradition will both pay homage to Pan Am and provides a platform for countless individuals with connections to the storied brand to share their memories.”

Suggestions for Pan Am Airways Clipper names can be submitted through the form on the Pan Am: Tracing the Transatlantic Routes website. An expert panel, including Craig Carter (CEO of Pan American World Airways), Ed Trippe (Chair of the Pan Am Historical Foundation and son of founder Juan Trippe), and Linda Freire (Chair of the Pan Am Museum Foundation), will select the name that best represents Pan Am’s spirit. The chosen name will be revealed on the aircraft before its inaugural flight from JFK on June 17, 2025.

The private jet program is operated by Bartelings, specializing in global private aircraft tours, and Criterion Travel, known for U.S. affinity organization tours. Taking on Europe with Viking Modi

by JIll Weinlein February 6, 2025
written by JIll Weinlein

Stepping into Viking Modi’s main restaurant on Taste of Germany night, guests were offered steins filled with German beer, and an array of traditional German fare including giant pretzels, sizzling bratwurst, fermented sauerkraut, flavorful purple cabbage, and slices of apple strudel topped with vanilla ice cream. This is one of many immersive culinary opportunities guests enjoy aboard the 190-passenger longship.

The ever-changing scenery of turreted fortresses, grand European cathedrals, and medieval cities arouse a sense of adventure on river cruises. This ship is named after the Norse god Modi, known for his courage and strength, but its sophisticated interior is inspired by Scandinavian light and modern design elements.

Size Matters

There are 95 comfortable staterooms that include 39 veranda rooms, 25 standard cabins, and 22 French balcony staterooms. Those looking for a two-room suite can reserve one of the seven veranda suites or the two Explorer suites with a wraparound balcony at the aft of the ship.

The Heart of the Ship

Guests congregate in the large lounge area with a full bar in the evening to listen to live music and other entertainment. It’s a popular spot to enjoy a glass of wine or cocktail before each evening’s briefing or after dinner during a show. Nearby is a small library offering fresh-out-of-the-oven cookies along with hot coffee, lattes, and tea.

Breathe in Fresh Air

Start your day strolling around the rooftop sun deck featuring a walking track offering 360-degree views. There are plenty of lounge chairs, plus a putting green, shuffleboard court, and the Captain’s Bridge. Guests are free to ask questions about how he expertly navigates the river and maneuvers through the different locks.

Culinary Delights

Early risers enjoy a light breakfast at the Aquavit Terrace to take in the sunrise views. The main restaurant offers a buffet and daily a la carte menu curated for every dietary need. During lunch and dinner, one side of the menu offers a daily changing selection of items inspired by the region, while the other side provides an array of grilled proteins, along with vegetarian and gluten-free dishes.

Adult Focus Voyages

Daily walking or bus tours enlighten passengers about the history of each port. Visits to UNESCO World Heritage sites, while taking in the scenic beauty and experiencing the flavors of a city, inspire one to learn more about a destination. Viking offers daily complimentary excursions, and engaging evening discussions to heighten one’s awareness of the places you’re visiting and the river you’re sailing. Passengers have earpieces in their stateroom for use during shore excursions to hear the tour guide clearly during walking tours and other activities on land. There are also a handful of optional excursions for a fee, such as learning about Cologne’s beer culture, attending a musical concert, or visiting one of the UNESCO Palaces.

2025 Itinerary

Viking Modi is sailing on 8-day Rhine Getaway cruises from Basel, Switzerland, to Amsterdam. Stops include Germany’s fabled Black Forest; Strasbourg, France; the scenic Middle Rhine; Cologne; and the Dutch windmills in Kinderdijk.

Dining is the cornerstone of the Oceania Cruises experience, and the new menus for The Grand Dining Room are a shining example of the culinary artistry of our talented team, led by Chefs Alexis Quaretti and Eric Barale, our Executive Culinary Directors and resident Master Chefs of France. Every dish reflects craftsmanship, passion, and unparalleled quality perfectly aligning with the warmth and elegance of the onboard experience and service that our guests cherish.”

DINING UPDATES

Revamped Breakfast Menu
The Grand Dining Room offers a refreshed breakfast with over 30 new recipes, including Signature Eggs Benedict variations like Florentine and Smoked Salmon. Daily specials feature a zucchini waffle with smoked salmon and a Mexican burrito.

La Brasserie Lunch Transformation
At lunch, The Grand Dining Room serves French bistro dishes. The menu includes a rotating vegetarian main course, cheese plate, and charcuterie platter. Highlights are Blanquette De Veau and Coq Au Vin, along with burgers and French dip sandwiches.

The dinner menu features over 200 new recipes with the Chef’s Recommendations. Appetizers include scallop panna cotta and Pâté en Croûte. Notable entrées include slow-cooked Korean BBQ short rib and seafood vol-au-vent.

Chef Quaretti added: “In crafting these new dishes, I drew deep inspiration from my childhood, family life, and of course, from across my career, including collaborations with renowned Chef Jacques Pépin, our culinary patriarch. Other inspirations for new menu items are especially personal, such as the Mousse au Chocolat de Marnie Huguette, which uses my grandmother’s cherished recipe and is re-created with the same care and precision she taught me.
