Carnival Liberty Returns to Service

by Porthole Cruise and Travel July 15, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Liberty resumed sailings from New Orleans on Sunday following a dry dock that included updates to the Cloud9 Spa, the addition of a WaterWorks aqua park, and a new bar and lounge.

Carnival Liberty’s first guests since the dry dock are enjoying a week-long cruise to the Caribbean. Sister ship Carnival Valor also underwent a renovation and resumed sailings from New Orleans last month.

New Additions and Upgrades on Board

The new Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge aboard Carnival Liberty honors military service members and their families. The cruise line also added new slides to the WaterWorks aqua park, built a new mini golf course, and refreshed its spa, now called Cloud9 Spa. Upgrades include new décor, enhanced beauty stations, a fitness center, a new Elamis Boutique, and new steam rooms and saunas.

Carnival also updated its casino’s layout, adding new slot machines and table games. For younger guests, the cruise line introduced new gaming stations at Camp Ocean and revamped both the Arcade and Club O2 teen spaces.

Other additions to Carnival Liberty include a Dream Studio for personalized photo sessions and a new Carnival Adventures venue where guests can learn about and book shore excursions. The retail FUN Shops now feature new displays, and a new High Spirits liquor store has been added.

The upgrade also focused on accessibility, with improved pathways and amenities in several public spaces and cabins.

Carnival Liberty sails week-long cruises to The Bahamas and the Western Caribbean. On July 23, the ship will make its first call at Celebration Key, Carnival’s new exclusive destination.

Margaritaville at Sea Unveils New Ship Beachcomber

by Porthole Cruise and Travel July 15, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Today, Margaritaville at Sea announced that it will launch its largest ship yet, Beachcomber. The ship’s design is inspired by sister ships Islander and Paradise, featuring a color palette of nautical blues, sunlit yellows, and warm beachy tones.

“With Beachcomber, we wanted to create a design that captures the spirit of fun, warmth, and relaxed adventure,” said Martha Brabham, Head of Design at Margaritaville at Sea. “We drew inspiration from nostalgic beach scenes, vintage surf art, and the carefree escapism that defines the brand. The result is a design that feels joyful and instantly familiar one that builds on the award-winning aesthetic we introduced with Islander in 2024.”

About Beachcomber

Beachcomber will have a gross tonnage of more than 100,000 and will feature a variety of fan favorites, including 5 O’Clock Somewhere, Hemisphere Dancer, Cheeseburger in Paradise, and License to Chill. Additionally, Margaritaville at Sea has created over 15 new brand-exclusive experiences for the ship.

“Beachcomber isn’t just our largest ship; it’s a floating celebration of everything guests love about Margaritaville at Sea hospitality, turned up a few notches,” said Christopher Ivy, Chief Executive Officer of Margaritaville at Sea. “Building on the magic and momentum of Islander, we set out to create an experience that’s even more immersive, playful, and full of unexpected delights. Whether you’re sailing with us for the first time or returning for more, Beachcomber promises sun-soaked surprises and the signature spirit.”

Cruisers can stay tuned for more details about Beachcomber‘s homeport and booking opportunities later this summer.

Ship Review: Digging up Disney Treasure

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine July 15, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

I am sitting on a crushed velvet settee in an elegant piano lounge, sipping a gin-based cocktail poured from a bejeweled teapot into a Turkish tea glass.  Inside recessed nooks are cozy booths, behind which are sepia-toned murals of tropical foliage. The walls beyond are painted a deep burgundy, and on them hang family portraits framed in hunter green and gold.

If you aren’t looking carefully, you might miss the cats painted into the vintage murals, the kittens featured in the family portraits, and the paw prints on the grand piano. And so it is on Disney Cruise Lines’ newest ship, Disney Treasure. If you know nothing, or don’t care to know anything, about Disney’s vault of intellectual property, you might not even realize you are on a Disney ship, at least not initially.

However, if, like me, you have prepared for this moment by rewatching Disney’s The Aristocats for the first time in decades, you will look around the room with delight. For those who grew up watching Disney movies on Sunday night TV, or who love going to the Disney Parks, your entire experience on the ship will be punctuated by these moments of happy recognition, of tiny reunions with some of your favorite characters and attractions.

While Disney Treasure may not be for everyone, it is certainly designed to be.

An Eye for Design

I am not being hyperbolic when I say that Disney Treasure is the most beautiful cruise ship I have ever been on and one of the most beautifully designed spaces I have ever been in. Everywhere on the ship are bold colors: royal blues, mustard yellows, deep purples, and peacock greens. Inside are velvet textures, dark woods, geometrically patterned tiles, and Moroccan-inspired brass light fixtures, including the massive chandelier that illuminates the Great Hall and whose colors change throughout the day.

The same interplay of color and texture is reflected in my cabin, a Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom. Lightly themed after Disney’s feature film Aladdin, the navy blue and teal mosaic pattern of the carpet reminds me of Marrakesh’s Jardin Majorelle. Recessed into an alcove above the bed is a large mural of the fictional city of Agrabah at dusk, which can be illuminated at night with the bedside switch labeled “Artwork.”  The rest of the cabin is swathed in neutral colors and natural textures, while the pale gold of the fixtures and a thread in the sofa’s woven fabric allow for a hint of shimmer.  My favorite feature of my cabin is the floor-to-ceiling porthole, which later becomes the perfect perch from which to watch the Pirate Night fireworks show in my pajamas and away from the crowds.

My cabin is thoughtfully designed to maximize every inch of its 237 square feet.  The queen bed with its luxurious Frette 300-thread-count, 100-percent cotton linens is raised, so I store my suitcase underneath the frame to hide visual reminders of disembarkation day, which I know will come all too quickly.  Even as a solo traveler who does not need to share my space with anyone, I appreciate the split bathroom configuration and the updated shower/tub combo with bright white subway tile and a hard-sided door. These are small but significant improvements over the older ships’ single bathroom and shower curtains.  Had I been traveling with family or friends, the convertible sofa, a twin bed that the stateroom host can pull down from the ceiling to create a bunk bed, three floor to ceiling closets, and a curtain room divider would have allowed everyone to have a place for their things and a bit of privacy.

Delicious Variations

Disney Cruise Line employs a rotational dining strategy, which means every night guests dine at one of three main dining rooms. The wait staff also rotates with their guests, which provides a continuity of service.  During my 7-night cruise, I eat at 1923, named for the year the Disney Company was created, three times.  Since I enjoy the California-style cuisine, I’m happy with my rotation.  On the other nights, I dine at a Mexican restaurant themed after the Disney film Coco, and World of Marvel.  (If the Marvel restaurant menu had a coherent identity, I couldn’t discern what it was.)

As this is my second solo Disney Cruise, I knew I would be seated at a table with other independent travelers.  I am not an extrovert and initially envision awkward meals.  However, just like on my previous solo Disney Cruise, my tablemates and I all share a love of independent travel, Disney, and Disney Cruises, and conversation is easy. Even when I have an early meal of fish and chips at Periscope Pub, I go up to dinner anyway because I want to hear about my tablemates’ days.

I do leave rotational dining behind once in order to try the Collection tasting menu at Enchante ($), the adults-only fine-dining restaurant designed by three-Michelin-starred Chef Arnaud Lallement. Over two hours, I am treated to a modern take on classic French cuisine. One of the most surprising standouts is the “tomato water” that comes with an amuse bouche of tomatoes presented three ways.  Also outstanding is the third course, a beautifully caramelized turbot a la plancha, similarly accompanied by onions three ways. With my meal, I choose to go on the “Champagne Journey” and am guided through tasting renowned vintages such as Dom Perignon 2013 and Louis Roederer Cristal 2014.

An Active Sailing

While Disney Cruise Line is known as a family-oriented cruise line with an array of options and entertainment for children, I am here to let you in on a well-kept secret: Disney Cruise Line is also a summer camp for adults.  Adults-only activities I participate in on this sailing include: trivia (Disney food, National Geographic); bingo; an Indiana Jones–themed Sarabi Supper Club and a very adult, raucous retelling of all five Indiana Jones films called “Choose Wisely”; guided fitness classes (free Morning Stretch and additional-charge Pure Form Pilates and Slow Flow Yoga); crafts; the Cove trio of infinity pool, café, and bar; improv performances by Coriander and Sage; 80s hits with live band The Dublooners; and three acupuncture sessions ($) by the gifted practitioner Emily at the Senses Spa.

In addition, I purchased the 7 Night Unlimited Rainforest Pass, which gives me access to Senses Spa’s Rainforest Room.  On Treasure, this includes a tranquil indoor area with various showers, a dry sauna, a hammam, a “Frigidarium” or ice room, and heated lounge chairs where I read in peace.  Unlike the smaller ships, this Rainforest Room also includes a spacious, private outdoor deck with hot tubs, comfortable lounge chairs, and suspended daybeds.  While I hear some adults complaining about the size of the adults’ Cove pool and an inadequate number of chairs, I never have a hard time finding a quiet place to relax in the Rainforest Room.

I typically plan my own port excursions through third parties, but on this cruise, I book one of Disney’s adults-only excursions called the “Salty Piracy Adventure” ($). This turns out to be a 7-hour pirate-themed escape room … only the escape room consists of the islands of St. Thomas and St. John.  It is incredible.

Final Thoughts

Toward the end of my cruise, I join the Imagineering the Disney Ships tour. A fantastic cast member, Hannah, points out how the Disney Imagineers intentionally designed every aspect of the ship and deliberately chose each piece of art in order to tell a story. Since I teach a college course on “The Rhetoric of Walt Disney World,” I am, as my students say, HERE FOR IT.

Unlike the first four Disney ships that were designed to evoke the golden age of cruising with Art Deco and Art Nouveau styles, for the Triton class — the line’s newest and largest class of ships — the Imagineers wanted to tell a different story.  The Wish, Treasure, and upcoming Destiny are each designed around a motif and not an art style.

To illustrate, Hannah walks us through the Skipper Society, the Haunted Mansion Parlor, Periscope Pub, and the Scat Cat Lounge. Each of these spaces is themed around Disney attractions (the Jungle Cruise and the Haunted Mansion) or Disney films (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and The Aristocats). She notes how each attraction, film, and lounge tells a story of a journey, an adventure. The motif of Treasure is just that: it is the journey, the adventure, that leads you to find your treasure.

I hope mine leads me back to this ship.

Wind Spirit to Sail Canary Islands Winter 2026/27

by Julie Bouchner July 14, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

Today, Windstar Cruises announced Wind Spirit’s upcoming debut in the Canary Islands, with a season of 9-night sailings from November 2026 to January 2027! The updated itineraries highlight lesser-known ports, refreshed onboard spaces, and new marina access for easy ocean entry.

The itineraries include first-time visits to Porto Santo (Portugal) and El Hierro (Spain), two lesser-known islands known for their natural beauty and laid-back atmosphere.

Porto Santo, Portugal – A quiet escape with golden beaches, hiking trails, and historic ties to Christopher Columbus.
El Hierro, Spain – The smallest Canary Island and a UNESCO Global Geopark, known for lava pools, scenic trails, and a commitment to slow tourism.

RELATED: Now That’s the Spirit!

“We’re always looking to craft new itineraries that show off the authentic heart of a destination, and these updated Canary Islands voyages do just that,” said Jess Peterson, director of destination experience & itinerary planning. “By adding ports like Porto Santo and El Hierro – places larger ships can’t easily visit – we’re giving our guests a chance to experience a quieter, more natural side of the Canaries, with all the comforts of a Windstar yacht.”

Itinerary highlights

Windstar’s updated itineraries showcase each port through immersive excursions and expert local guides.

Top Experiences Include:

  • Camel rides across Lanzarote’s volcanic landscape
  • Madeira’s traditional toboggan ride and wine tasting
  • Stargazing in La Palma, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
  • Front-row views of Madeira’s iconic New Year’s Eve fireworks
  • Hiking and swimming in El Hierro’s volcanic pools, followed by dinner under the stars

Easier Access and Extended Options

Nonstop flights from major U.S. cities to Tenerife make travel simple. Guests can extend their trip with a 13+ night Star Collector Voyage or a Madrid Cruise Tour for a blend of island time and city exploration.

A Different Kind of Holiday

The Canary Islands offer a warm-weather alternative to traditional winter getaways. Celebrate Christmas Eve (Nochebuena) with festive seafood dinners and enjoy open-air performances by Rondallas de los Divinos—local choral groups that bring Spanish holiday traditions to life in 73°F weather.

Wind Spirit, Refreshed

Wind Spirit returns with upgraded suites, a refreshed spa and fitness center, and updated dining and lounge spaces. Select ports will also feature Windstar’s new marina platform for kayaking, paddleboarding, and floating lounges—right off the back of the yacht.

Limited-Time Booking Offers

  • Book by August 31, 2025, to receive a complimentary All-Inclusive Package (valued at $1,300 per stateroom for a 7-day cruise), including Wi-Fi, select drinks, gratuities, and up to $200 onboard credit.
  • With Windstar’s new Pay Now, Save More offer, guests who pay in full at booking receive an extra 5% discount—combinable with the Early Booking Offer.

Cherbourg and Brest: The Secret Swans

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine July 14, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

In Cherbourg and Brest, you’re much more likely to be enjoying that cuisine alongside actual French people instead of tourists.

The château belongs to — and is still partly occupied by — the French Navy, making it the oldest castle in the world that’s still in military use.

I grew up on England’s south coast and family vacations often involved a ferry crossing to France. Cherbourg was one of the ports we arrived into, and that’s all I ever really knew about the city: an unattractive ferry port where my parents loaded up on great-value wine before hurrying home. Today’s shore excursions in Cherbourg reflect a similar attitude, with guests mostly rushing through town on Mont Saint-Michel or D-Day beach tours.

In Brest, too, cruise passengers are encouraged to shun the city for more attractive destinations. But there’s a most excellent alternative to flinging yourself on these far-flung excursions: remaining in Cherbourg and Brest.

Local Flavor

You’re in France. No matter where in France, there will be somewhere selling good coffee and even better baked goods. Yes, even the country’s questionably attractive northern ports contain boulangeries where the waft of fresh croissants reminds you that you’re somewhere that takes cuisine very seriously. Except that, in Cherbourg and Brest, you’re much more likely to be enjoying that cuisine alongside actual French people instead of tourists.

A 15-minute walk from where your ship docks is Cherbourg’s downtown, a warren of narrow streets edged by old stone buildings. Cherbourg receives, on average, over 170 days of rain or snow annually and, thanks to the famous 1963 movie Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg), has a reputation as a particularly soggy part of France. Not helping this reputation is the fact that a renowned umbrella manufacturer with the same name as the movie is located here. Tour their factory or find one of their outlets on the pedestrianized Rue des Portes for a unique — and useful — souvenir.

Just minutes away, on Rue Maréchal Foch, Boulangerie Rivey is the place to find something sumptuously sweet while rubbing shoulders with discerning locals. You’ll probably need to speak some French here, so repeat after me: “Un croissant, s’il vous plait” (“Deux” if you’re feeling hungry). OK, this isn’t the most picturesque street, but just over the road is the 1882 Théâtre à l’Italienne. The theater’s Beaux-Arts facade is sure to impress and rivals even the most lavish buildings of Paris.

Loop back towards your ship and visit the Cité de la Mer Museum beside the cruise terminal. Exhibits include an immersive tour of oceanic sounds, France’s first nuclear submarine, and a collection of objects from Titanic, which sailed from here on that first and fateful journey. History is also evident as you sail away: Construction of Cherbourg’s harbor wall began in 1783 and continued under Napoleon as part of his unfinished preparations to invade England.

Secret Grandeur

Brest has a more obvious charm as you approach from the sea: its impressively large château. The grandeur continues as soon as your free shuttle deposits you beside Place de la Liberté (Liberty Square). You can’t miss the large Brutalist town hall fronted by fountains. Turn around and head down Rue de Siam. This wide street is .…

by Julie Bouchner July 11, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

Royal Caribbean has officially taken delivery of Star of the Seas, the next ship in its Icon Class, after nearly two years of construction at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland. The ship is set to debut this August from Port Canaveral (Orlando), Florida.

More than 1,250 crew members and partners gathered in the ship’s AquaTheater to mark the handover. Royal Caribbean Group President and CEO Jason Liberty, Royal Caribbean President and CEO Michael Bayley, and Meyer Turku CEO Casimir Lindholm were on hand to recognize the team behind the build—from engineers to designers—who brought Star of the Seas to life.

“The delivery of Star of the Seas marks another bold step forward in Royal Caribbean Group’s journey to reimagine the future of vacations. Star and the Icon Class are a symbol of what’s possible when innovation, imagination and our relentless focus on delivering exceptional experiences come together, ultimately creating unforgettable memories for millions of families and vacationers,” said Jason Liberty, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean Group. “We’re proud to bring this next-generation vacation experience to life with our valued partners at Meyer Turku.”

The delivery marked the official transfer of ownership from Meyer Turku to Royal Caribbean and highlighted key engineering milestones, including the installation of the glass-and-steel AquaDome and six record-breaking waterslides. Star of the Seas will soon head from Turku to Cádiz, Spain, for final outfitting before launching 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises, with stops including Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas.

“We’re incredibly proud to welcome Star of the Seas to the Royal Caribbean family as we continue to revolutionize how families and adventurers vacation,” said Michael Bayley, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean. “It’s a true team effort with so many talented individuals coming together to make the new Icon Class vacation a reality, and we’re excited to debut this incredible achievement with a star-studded celebration this August.”

Star of the Seas will double down on Royal Caribbean’s biggest vacation offerings with eight neighborhoods featuring over 40 dining, drinking, and entertainment options. Highlights include:

  • Thrill Island – Home to Category 6, the largest waterpark at sea, with six record-setting slides; Crown’s Edge, a skywalk-thrill ride hybrid 154 feet above the ocean; plus the FlowRider surf simulator and rock-climbing wall.
  • Chill Island – A three-deck pool zone with four pools, including Royal Bay, the largest at sea. Swim-up bars, live music, and The Lime & Coconut bar round out the scene.
  • Surfside – A family-friendly neighborhood with splash areas for kids, a relaxing pool for adults, and all-ages dining at Surfside Eatery and Pier 7.
  • AquaDome – An oceanview space with high-tech AquaTheater shows by night and dining options like Hooked Seafood, Rye & Bean, and AquaDome Market by day.
  • The Hideaway – An adults-only escape 135 feet above the water, with an infinity pool, DJ, bar, whirlpools, and panoramic views.

Other standout features include a revamped Royal Promenade with floor-to-ceiling views and the world’s largest kinetic art sculpture, a lush Central Park with 30,000+ plants, and the Lincoln Park Supper Club. Guests can stay in upgraded suites across four decks, complete with private sun decks and a two-story Coastal Kitchen.

Star is Royal Caribbean’s third LNG-powered ship and includes sustainable tech like waste heat recovery and shore power compatibility. It supports the brand’s goal of launching a net-zero cruise ship by 2035. The next Icon Class ship, Legend of the Seas, is set for 2026.

Royal Caribbean is also expanding its destination offerings, including Royal Beach Club Paradise Island (2025), Royal Beach Club Cozumel (2026), Perfect Day Mexico (2027), and a new private destination in Lelepa, South Pacific (2027).

My Most Memorable Voyage Yet with Explora Journeys

by Bill Panoff July 11, 2025
written by Bill Panoff

Just wrapped up my third sailing on Explora I since her debut—and somehow, each journey manages to outdo the last. This time, we explored the Mediterranean, departing from Piraeus, Greece, and visiting some of the region’s most breathtaking, culturally rich ports. The scenery was spectacular, of course—but once again, it was the onboard experience that truly stood out.

What I love most about Explora Journeys is the refined elegance that greets you the moment you step aboard. The design is stunning—thoughtful, serene, and reminiscent of a favorite luxury boutique hotel at sea. But it’s more than just aesthetics. The culinary program keeps evolving and surprising me. Every restaurant feels like a destination of its own, and each dish is crafted with passion and purpose. I’ve had some of the best culinary experiences right here on this ship. And then there’s the crew—the heart of the journey. So many team members make everything look effortless, yet their pride and attention to detail shine through. They remember your name, your favorite coffee, your preferred table at dinner. Their warmth is genuine, and you can feel their excitement to be there. That kind of hospitality is rare—and it’s what keeps me coming back.

With Explora Journeys expanding quickly—Explora III is already on the horizon for next year—it’s clear they’re onto something special. If you’ve ever considered booking a cruise—especially one rooted in connection, culture, cuisine, and calm this is it. It’s more than a vacation. It’s a journey you’ll want to take again and again.

Top 5 Must-Do Experiences on MSC World America

by Julie Bouchner July 11, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

I recently sailed on MSC World America and packed a lot into one trip—great food, good coffee, spa time, and plenty to explore.  While there’s no shortage of things to do on board, these five experiences stood out and are well worth making time for.

For first-timers or frequent cruisers alike, here’s what NOT to miss!

1. Relax and Rejuvenate at the MSC Aurea Spa

Onboard Spa: sauna, massages and beauty treatments | MSC Cruises

MSC Aurea Spa | Photo: MSC Cruises

The Aurea Spa is MSC World America’s full-service onboard spa, offering everything from massages and facials to beauty treatments. I booked a Balinese massage on a sea day and couldn’t have timed it better. My massage therapist took the time to ask about my pain points and adjusted the pressure accordingly, making the experience feel personalized and effective. Afterward, I took full advantage of the thermal spa, including the sauna and steam room, which added to the overall sense of relaxation. If you’re looking to unwind while at sea, the MSC Aurea Spa is the place to do it.

2. Experience Formal Night

Cruise Wedding. Symbolic Weddings | MSC Cruises

Formal night is a cruise tradition, and MSC World America does it well. It’s a chance to dress up, enjoy an elevated dinner, and take in the lively atmosphere. I had an incredible filet, and I’m still thinking about it. It’s also a good time to connect with other passengers and share a few laughs over a great meal. Whether you’re sailing solo or with others, formal night adds a fun, elegant break from the usual routine.

3. Experience the Dirty Dancing Celebration Show

Dirty Dancing in Concert | Photo: Julie Bouchner

A new addition to MSC Cruises and MSC World America! This onboard celebration of the classic Dirty Dancing film comes in two versions. The 35-minute show features a fast-paced lineup of the movie’s best songs, while the full two-hour version tells the entire story with live singing and choreography. Both versions are high-energy and well-executed, making this one of the ship’s top entertainment options. Be sure to book a reservation to see the show right when you get onboard to ensure you secure a spot!

4. Taste Italy’s Finest at Eataly at Sea

Discover the Only Eataly at Sea with MSC Cruises | Eataly

5. Sip Coffee with a View at the Coffee Emporium

One of my daily highlights was grabbing a coffee at the Coffee Emporium on the World Promenade. Tea, pastries, and more are available too—but nothing beat sipping my favorite drink with the ocean right in front of me. I quickly became a regular, and by the end of the cruise, the baristas knew my order. Whether you need a morning pick-me-up or a cozy afternoon break, the Coffee Emporium is the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the ocean breeze.

MSC World America offers the perfect blend of relaxation, entertainment, and authentic dining. I could easily list more than five must-do experiences—but hey, you’ve got to save some surprises for your own cruise! So, when will you be sailing and experiencing it for yourself?

Steve Leland’s Summer of Somewhere Else

by Steve Leland July 10, 2025
written by Steve Leland

When friends ask, “Where are you traveling to next?” my quick retort is, “Somewhere else!” However, 45 years of intensive world travel has created a dilemma. Having cruised all seven seas, sailed most of the rivers in Europe, and crisscrossed the canals of France, I’m running out of somewhere elses. For my latest, I relied on my friend Stephanie at Barge Lady Cruises to find me a unique somewhere else.

Intent on following through with an annual barge pilgrimage, the challenge was met head on with her suggestion of a barge cruise out of Venice. I’d visited Venice a few times yet knew nothing about the secret waterways of the Po River Valley that eventually feed into the city’s famed lagoons. Count me all in for this 6-day Venetian adventure aboard La Bella Vita.

La Bella Vita | Photo: Steve Leland

It’s A Beautiful Life

Sailing between Venice and Mantua, the vessel unveils an Italian version of the French barge itineraries that we have come to love. Replace French gastronomy, wines, and cheeses with regional Italian fare and what’s not to love?  This 20-passenger luxury hotel barge is the ideal venue for an intimate journey through the rivers, canals, and lagoons of northeastern Italy.

With a transfer from Venice Mestre to La Bella Vita and an introduction to our crew of 10 complete, we’re immediately off for a guided tour of Mantua. Surrounded by three artificial lakes, the off-the-radar city is known for the history of the ruling Gonzaga family and its Renaissance architectural treasures. The next morning’s visit to the Palazzo Te, is a glimpse into the artistic creativity of Giulio Romano’s stunning frescoes and art that adorn the walls and ceilings of every room.

We start each day with a cappuccino and a hearty breakfast on board, then set off with our tour leader for the morning’s excursion. In Ferrara, we’re welcomed to cultural sights that include the mighty towers of a castle in the very center of town, as well as a walk through the magnificent Baroque cathedral. Free time for wandering was followed up by a hosted lunch in a sidewalk café.

Back on board, gentle afternoon cruising was perfect for a refreshing siesta on the upper deck as La Bella Vita glided along a canal through fields of the agriculturally blessed countryside. Dinner on board was followed with an exceptionally talented duo performing opera selections and regional favorites.

Wine Me Up

Wine enthusiasts will especially enjoy the visit to the vineyards and grounds of the Dominio Bagnoli wine estate. A walk through the vines and a sampling of the wines was only a prelude to an evening ashore at the country estate of Ca’Zen. Aperitifs hosted by the welcoming owner and a BBQ dinner supplemented by local wines made for a night to savor forever.

On Day Five, we disembarked in the morning for a tour of Chioggia, a bustling town positioned across the expansive lagoon from Venice. It was market day and the main street was lined with vendors hawking fruits, vegetables, clothing, and plenty of fresh fish. A brief trip aboard a boat typical of the lagoon delivered us to La Bella Vita awaiting on Pellestrina Island, a barrier island adjacent to Venice’s Lido. The captain hosted us at a local bar for aperitifs and snacks as the setting sun provided a cinematic backdrop.

Colorful Burano | Photo: Steve Leland

Regrettably, the cruise was nearing an end but arrival in Venice offered everything you’d expect from this iconic city. A guided tour through the palatial Doge’s Palace plus a visit to St. Marks Square and its dominating cathedral … it was all breathtaking.  Walking the narrow sidewalks as a fleet of gondolas sliced through the canals. Shopping for anything and everything. The brilliant colors of the homes in Burano or the glass factories of Murano provided photo opportunities not to miss.

E La Barca…

With so much to see on this diverse itinerary, it’s easy to overlook the amenities of the barge itself. It’s larger than typical French barges, yet, with only 10 cabins, small enough to provide the ambience of personal space. The open-air sun deck, complete with shaded lounge chairs and a hot tub, provided the perfect spot for reflection on the day’s events.

Breakfast consisted of a buffet of fruits, cereals, breads, and eggs, all complemented by an invigorating Italian espresso or cappuccino.  As on the barges of France, lunches and dinners presented opportunities to savor regional dishes along with exceptional Italian wines. The vessel’s smiling crew, captain, and tour leader were all as attentive as I’ve ever experienced, making this the perfect somewhere else, defining that as something special.

A Very Fine Line

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine July 9, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

As the sun rose over Sydney on March 14, 2025, a historic moment was unfolding in the harbor. Just east of the Heads, the 108,865-gt Pacific Adventure was slowly sailing towards its home port.

Arriving in Sydney is something the Grand-class cruise ship had done many times, continuing a tradition that dated to 1932, when the P&O liner Strathaird inaugurated local cruising from Sydney.

Since first arriving in Sydney in 2022, Pacific Adventure’s arrivals had become routine. But there was nothing routine about this arrival. After 92 years of cruising, P&O’s link to Australia was coming to an end.

A Storied History

P&O’s connection to Australia ran far deeper than its cruising ties, with the line’s link to Australia established at a time when the world was a far bigger place.

In the 1840s, it took an average of 121 days to travel from Britain to the Australian colonies by sailing ship. The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co. (P&O) were pioneers in global steamer services, yet despite success in Europe and the Middle East, Australia was a challenging prospect.

“To all intents and purposes, and particularly to Britain, Australia in the 1800s may as well have been on the moon,” says Robert Henderson. A former P&O employee, Henderson is a respected Australian maritime historian. He is also the curator of the Henderson & Cremer Collection — a treasure-trove of historic P&O artifacts and photographs.

“The distance to Australia, was ‘a mile too far away’ for the … engines that powered the early steam-ships,” Henderson notes, adding: “The constant question asked was how any ship could cope with the unknown southern seas, as the only routes to Australia, at the time, ran via The Cape of Good Hope, or via Cape Horn.”

An Australian Staple

P&O were granted their first contract for the Australian service in 1852. Their steamer Chusan made its maiden call in Melbourne on July 29, sailing on to Sydney a few days later.

P&O’s early years in Australia brought welcome change … yet it was not all smooth sailing. The Crimean War led to the line withdrawing from the Australian service in 1855 due to lack of available ships, and they were required to tender for the contract again — not regaining it until 1859, after which they established a monthly service.

As the Australian colonies grew, their reliance on the P&O steamer service became more diverse, with exporters becoming a major customer for the shipping line.

“The company’s involvement with Australian exports was legendary,” says Henderson. “The export of wool, the Australian wealth of minerals, and the important development of frozen and chilled meats, dairy, and fruits has the name of P&O stamped large.”

Henderson also notes: “Governments listened to the company when it (faced) trade and immigration questions.”

The line’s link to Australia extended past peacetime services. World War I and World War II saw many Australian servicemen sail to war aboard a requisitioned P&O steamer.

P&O’s ships were not only used to take Australian servicemen to war but were also requisitioned for repatriation voyages. The emotion of being reunited with loved ones, combined with a significant portion of the Australian population having immigrated on P&O ships, led to the line becoming firmly cemented in the Australian story.

Then Came Cruising

The introduction of the white-hulled Strathnaver in 1931 led to a revolution on the Australian route. Larger than her forebears, the 22,283-grt liner brought a level of comfort not yet seen in the Southern Hemisphere. She was followed by four sisters, Strathaird, Strathmore, Stratheden, and Strathallan.

During this period, P&O cruising was growing in popularity. Short pleasure voyages provided an affordable way to escape the….
