written by Julie Bouchner

Oceania Cruises launched The Floating Pastry Academy, a multi-year training program for onboard chefs developed with The Butter Book, the first of its kind in the cruise industry.

More than 200 pastry and bakery chefs will complete the three-year program, combining online courses with onboard assessments.

The program provides structured training to build technical skills and consistency across the fleet, supporting the brand’s focus on cuisine and French culinary tradition.

The program was developed by Executive Culinary Director Eric Barale and The Butter Book founder Sébastien Canonne, a Meilleur Ouvrier de France recipient.

“This academy strengthens consistency, precision and growth across our pastry program,” said Barale.

“Investing in people is key to sustaining luxury,” added Canonne. “This model supports long-term excellence without compromising quality.”

The program includes role-based training paths, required foundations for new hires, digital coursework, hands-on assessments, and certification at each stage.

The academy builds on Oceania Cruises’ broader investment in French culinary heritage, including La Table par Maîtres Cuisiniers de France, set to debut aboard Oceania Sonata in 2027.

New Tech Down Ancient Trails

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine March 30, 2026
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

A chance to pedal a remote part of Scotland where few tourists have tread appealed to the explorer in me. I looked forward to e-biking quiet, centuries-old roads winding through the island archipelago of the Outer Hebrides where the term “rush hour” refers to a herd of sheep blocking a road rather than a long line of cars. The Outer Hebrides, also known as the Western Islands, consist of a long, 100-mile-plus chain of very small islands located off the northwest coast of mainland Scotland. For me, the remote islands represented a miniature, less-traveled version of the mainland.

It showcased Gaelic heritage, ancient ruins and even a few whiskey distilleries as well as an abundance of natural beauty that made the destination perfect for slow-paced cycling. Daily rides traversed a variety of terrain from coastal cliffs with big sky vistas of white sand beaches, rolling inland hills dotted with wooly Hebridean sheep and Highland cows, plus endless grassy meadows blanketed in wildflowers and heather-clad fields as far as the eye could see.

To be fair, though, there was another reason that drew me to these rugged isles. As an ardent admirer of Outlander, the TV show, my infatuation with the epic historical drama elevated my incentive to visit Scotland in a way that would immerse me within the ancient, storied landscape. The series opens during a major turning point in Scottish history, centered around the legendary Battle of Culloden where the main characters, a handsome Scottish highlander of the 17th century and his time-traveling 20th-century lady love captured my imagination.

E-biking Back

My version of stepping back, or rather pedaling back, into history involved joining a guided, small-group, e-bike tour with Scottish operator Wilderness Scotland, well-known for crafting distinctive, off-the beaten path hiking and biking tours within the country. The e-bike served as my time-traveling mode of transportation. The seven-day itinerary traversed 5 of the 12 inhabited islands from South Uist to Benbecula to North Uist and then onwards to Harris and Lewis, and every moment beheld scenic and iconic wonders unique to each location. Each day revealed fascinating discoveries in the form of ancient sites, museum tours, and historic monuments about groups of people that once inhabited the remote islands from post Ice-Age hunter dwellers, Neolithic farmers, Picts, Vikings, and Celts, to powerful Scottish clans like MacDonald, MacLeod, MacLean, and MacKenzie.

As a cyclist who has toured with traditional road bikes, pedaling an e-bike was really liberating. I was amazed how easy it was to effortlessly spin over rolling hills and steep climbs, far less energy was expended. There was less concern about completing the 30-40 miles of each day’s route since an e-bike covered more distance in less time. This allowed for a more relaxing atmosphere among the group with ample time to make leisurely stops at scenic look-outs and historic sites.

After a lesson on how to follow the daily route with the GPS tracker attached to our e-bikes, we rolled out each day with one guide leading the way and the other guide driving the support van. The most difficult thing about riding the e-bike was remembering to turn off the bike battery in between stops so the battery didn’t drain. It was comforting to know that after each day’s ride the guides would service the bikes and take care of any maintenance issues.

Quiet stretches of narrow road led through agricultural communities of “crofters,” traditional small-farm families who have….

Holland America Ages First Bourbon at Sea with Jefferson’s Bourbon

by Julie Bouchner March 27, 2026
written by Julie Bouchner

To mark International Whiskey Day, Holland America Line and Jefferson’s Bourbon are partnering to age Jefferson’s Ocean Bourbon at sea across the fleet. It’s the first time the distillery has collaborated with a cruise line on its Ocean Aged at Sea series. The program also expands Holland America’s Single Barrel Program and ties into its America’s 250th theme.

Beginning in March 2026, one barrel was placed on each ship, with all 11 ships carrying a barrel by the end of April. Each will age for at least six months, with motion, climate and ocean air shaping the final flavor.

“This partnership with Jefferson’s Bourbon is another way we’re setting ourselves apart through experiences that are too good to hurry through,” said Drew Foulk, director of food and beverage revenue and innovation. “Aging bourbon aboard our ships and offering it exclusively back to guests later reflects our commitment to beverage programs shaped by the journey.”

Guests can follow the process through onboard tastings tied to each itinerary. Once bottled, the bourbon will be served onboard, with each barrel yielding about 150 to 300 bottles arriving in 2027.

Founded in 1997 by Trey Zoeller and Chet Zoeller, Jefferson’s Bourbon builds on a multigenerational whiskey-making background. The ocean-aging concept began with Trey Zoeller’s experiments on cargo and fishing vessels and now expands to Holland America’s global fleet.

“We are thrilled to partner with Holland America Line to explore how different routes and climates influence our whiskey,” said Trey Zoeller. “The result will be exclusive to their ships once each voyage is complete.”

As part of its America’s 250th plans, Holland America is also partnering with U.S. brands. A collaboration with Crane features a card collection by the United States Veterans’ Artists Alliance, available onboard. With Pendleton Woolen Mills, the line introduced a limited-edition Alaska-themed throw blanket for 2026 sailings.

In 2027, a 28-day Pan Am 100th Anniversary Legendary Voyage will follow historic Clipper routes across 18 Caribbean ports. Additional collaborations will roll out ahead of July 4, 2026.

Stars and Stripes Cruise

Guests can also sail on the America’s 250th Celebration: Stars and Stripes cruise, departing Boston on July 4, 2026. The sailing includes a late-night departure for fireworks views, a deck celebration with classic American fare and live music, and stops in Norfolk and an overnight in New York.

Mindful in the Maasai Mara

by Kate Wickers March 24, 2026
written by Kate Wickers

Deep within Kenya’s wildlife-rich Maasai Mara, I’m not peering through binoculars at elephants or cheetahs but threading beads to make a bracelet, along with 20 industrious local women, nimble-fingered in creating the vibrant, intricate beaded jewelry that the Maasai people are known for. The Naboisho Women’s Craft Group has around 100 members and is supported with funds from the Great Plains Foundation, established by Dereck and Beverly Joubert, filmmakers, photographers, and National Geographic Explorers-at-Large. All money made through the Jouberts’ luxury safari camps (a portfolio of 13 across Kenya, Zimbabwe, and Botswana) is pumped back to local community and wildlife conservation projects. Sitting among these women, I feel a wonderful sense of sisterhood. Their pride in creating artisan pieces to sell is also palpable.

“This is a means of income, yes, but what the foundation has crucially provided is a sense of empowerment and purpose,” the cooperative’s coordinator tells me. When my beads have been strung and the cord tied, they start clapping and  break into song to wish me well on my safari (meaning “journey” in Swahili).

A Treetop View

I’m staying at Great Plains’ newest camp, the Mara Toto Tree Camp, which opened in the summer of 2024 and is tucked away within a glade of ebony trees in one of the quietest spots of the reserve. This is an elegant explorer’s camp made of wood and canvas, complete with writing desks, roll-top baths, and mosquito-draped, four-poster beds. Four luxurious tented suites are uniquely built on platforms up in the trees, with minimal disturbance to the environment. I’ve a tree soaring through mine, and, by night, the lullaby sending me to sleep is the splashing of hippos in the river below my deck.

Among its many initiatives, the Great Plains Foundation protects and expands natural habitats and practices long-term conservation. To date, 1.1 million acres have been protected, 87 rhinos translocated, 61,000 indigenous trees planted, and 101 elephants reintroduced … but perhaps it is their Big Cat Initiative (a National Geographic-supported endeavor which preserves land for lions, leopards, and cheetahs) that is the most crucial within the Maasai Mara.

“Educating local communities about how man and beast can best live together has been key here,” my Maasai guide, Francis, explains. “Historically, killing a lion was a rite of passage for Maasai warriors, but now we’ve become their guardians. When the Maasai are walking with cattle, they notice if an animal is in distress and they report it to the rangers.”

I see this in action on my first game drive, when two Maasai herdsmen, exercising their grazing rights within the Mara North conservancy, are within striking distance of a pride of lions. “They have a unique understanding that’s often hard for foreign visitors to comprehend. The lions recognise the Maasai’s traditional red cloth and show respect, and they co-exist peacefully,” says Francis.

A Shared Resource

Due to Mara Toto’s close location to the Mara North Conservancy, which is leased from the Maasai people and privately run, Great Plains’ guides are permitted access. Compared with the National Reserve, tourists are far fewer here, and ever-vigilant wardens enforce strict rules about observing wildlife, with a maximum of five vehicles allowed at any one location. I raise my binoculars to see three approaching lionesses on the hunt for dinner. “How do you feel about seeing a kill?” Francis wants to know.

While for many tourists this is the ultimate goal, I falter. It’s an elderly wildebeest the lions have their eye on. We watch as.…

The collaboration will culminate in 2028 with a full itinerary takeover during Seabourn’s 40th anniversary, on a 12-day Montreal to Boston sailing, the city where The Atlantic was founded in 1857.

The magazine will create programming for select voyages across topics such as culture, books, business, science, health, and tech, led by its writers. Known for its live events, including the Atlantic Festival and its nationwide Atlantic Across America tour, the publication brings its programming onboard.

“We’re thrilled to be collaborating with Seabourn to bring The Atlantic and the experience of our live events to their voyages,” said Alice McKown, The Atlantic‘s publisher and chief revenue officer. “Storytelling and connection define our work, and this allows us to develop one-of-a-kind events in intimate settings for Seabourn’s guests.”

On October 4, 2028, Seabourn Quest will host a 12-day “With The Atlantic: A Seabourn Conversations Exclusive” sailing. The voyage will feature discussions, themed experiences, and programming inspired by The Atlantic Festival, set against Canada’s fall foliage. Additional sailings with Atlantic programming are planned for 2026 and 2027.

The partnership also includes onboard digital access to The Atlantic during select sailings, plus a complimentary three-month subscription after the voyage. The Atlantic will also curate ship libraries with current issues and books by its writers.

The programming is part of Seabourn Conversations, the line’s enrichment series with experts across culture, science, politics, history, and the arts.

“Our guests are driven by a desire to explore — drawn not only to new destinations, but to the discovery of ideas, culture, cuisine, design and beyond that shape the world around them,” said Kacy Cole, Seabourn’s chief marketing officer. “With The Atlantic, we’re extending that exploration beyond place, bringing meaningful conversation and perspectives on board in a way that feels immersive, relevant, and unmistakably Seabourn.”

Eight Miles From Cancún, Yet WorldsApart

by Steve Leland March 23, 2026
written by Steve Leland

Every free-spirited traveler eventually graduates from the spring-break bravado of Cancún. Where do they earn their diplomas for refined travel? Mexico’s Isla Mujeres, just 8 miles off the coast.

The resort of Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets reimagines an adults-only setting where lively luxury coexists with ease. This island sanctuary suggests exhaling at a gentler pace, celebrating the rhythm of the sea rather than a DJ playlist. Mornings begin with a coffee and gentle ocean breezes, not the echo of last night’s bass line.

Acclaimed as “The Most Instagrammable Hotel In The World,” Impression Isla Mujeres pairs extreme design-forward architecture with elevated dining and personalized butler service, an all-inclusive experience for travelers who value atmosphere over adrenaline.

The all-inclusive idea here goes far beyond meals simply being “included.” This property operates under a concept they call “Endless Privileges.” This means the barriers between standard and premium are removed to provide a complimentary culinary journey across a curated collection of restaurants that encourage guests to explore rather than settle.

Every Meal Tells A Story

Guests can indulge in five gourmet à la carte restaurants, two casual dining venues, and a selection of bars and lounges. Renowned chefs source local and organic ingredients and turn each dish into a plated work of art.

Dining choices at Impressions Isla Mujeres are seamlessly connected. At UNIK – The Kitchen, the chic rooftop setting evokes a private culinary salon, where creative menus and artful presentation turn dinner into an event. Spezia delivers a contemporary take on exceptional Italian cuisine, while Wildfire Grill pairs its elegant setting with expertly prepared cuts of meat and fresh sea-to-table seafood. La Vista serves upscale interpretations of Mexican cuisine, and Saké rounds out the collection with pristine sushi and Asian-fusion dishes executed with precision.

Throughout the property, intimate cafés and cocktail lounges serve craft cocktails, curated wines, and light bites, ensuring that all-inclusive indulgence is always within reach on no set schedule.

Arranged Adventures, Restful Relaxation

For guests of Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets, activities mirror the resort’s implied elegance. Your dedicated butler can arrange snorkeling excursions, bespoke catamaran cruises, and early-morning swims alongside sea turtles. If you fancy a more open-ended exploration of the island, an easygoing bicycle ride or renting a golf cart can reveal hidden beaches, local galleries, artisan shops, and sunset viewpoints beyond the day-tripper circuit. In place of foam parties and flashing lights, guests here can drift between spa treatments and long lunches that stretch into the afternoon.

Leveraging the lofty hillside location, five tiered infinity pools cascade toward the turquoise Caribbean. The ambience feels curated for calm rather than spectacle. The resort features 125 ultra-luxury suites designed as sanctuaries, many with a balcony or terrace and a Mayan hot tub. Suites include wine refrigerators stocked to your preference, complimentary minibar selections, and 24 hour in-suite dining.

The on-site spa features the only hammam (Turkish bath) on the island plus a bubbling hydrotherapy pool and a Floatarium pod for sensory deprivation therapy.

An Inaction Plan

Mornings at Impressions Isla Mujeres move at their own pace. The floating breakfast of fresh tropical fruits, warm pastries, and Mexican specialties is a touch of genius delivered to you via a gently drifting tray in the heated pool. The morning meal becomes a buoyant ritual as the Caribbean sparkles beyond the infinity pool’s edge. Schedules  disappear, and the day becomes entirely your own.

Afternoons at Impressions Isla Mujeres are designed to be as active or as languid as guests desire. Some drift between the infinity pool and shaded loungers, while others set out on a private catamaran to snorkel secluded reefs or cruise the island’s luminous coastline. Spa treatments, mezcal tastings, or culinary demonstrations complete a full day.

By evening, Impressions Isla Mujeres shifts gears. Sunset cocktails, music-driven lounges, cultural entertainment, and lively yet refined dining move with a rhythm that feels energized without ever tipping into excess.

For all the emphasis placed on its creative architecture and eye-catching amenities, it is the resort’s impeccably trained staff that makes this resort what it is. Service is polished yet unforced, delivered with a warmth and attentiveness that feels genuinely personal, adding the essential “plus” to the resort’s five-star standing.

Exclusively for adult travelers who have simply moved beyond the neon-lit party scene, Impressions Isla Mujeres reminds us that the most rewarding escapes are not defined by late nights, but by the luxury of slowing down and savoring each moment

In less than three years from its inaugural opening, Impression Isla Mujeres has revealed itself as a property with a clear eye toward a storied future, a legacy that feels destined for the highest tier of global resorts.

Four Season Yachts Reveals Four Seasons I

by Julie Bouchner March 20, 2026
written by Julie Bouchner

Today, Four Seasons Yachts’ first vessel, Four Seasons I, sets sail on its maiden Mediterranean voyage, bringing the brand’s signature hospitality to ultra-luxury travel at sea. Built from the ground up with a guest-first focus, it marks Four Seasons’ debut on the water, blending the privacy of a yacht with its service, dining, wellness, and design in an intimate setting. Residential-style suites, many with large terraces and private plunge pools, offer space and seclusion, while access to smaller ports and yacht-only harbors sets a new standard for sea travel.

“Today’s luxury traveler values time, trust, and authenticity,” says Ben Trodd, CEO of Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings Ltd. “Four Seasons Yachts combines our hospitality standards with maritime expertise, offering a new way to experience the world.”

The first voyage, departing March 20, 2026, coincides with Four Seasons’ 65th anniversary and the opening of its first hotel in 1961, marking both a milestone and the brand’s expansion from land and sky to sea. Founder Isadore Sharp and his wife, Rosalie Sharp, have been named Godparents of Four Seasons I, continuing a maritime tradition.

“Four Seasons Yachts debuts on the same day as our first hotel opened 65 years ago,” says CEO Alejandro Reynal. “It reflects the same service and care our guests expect, now at sea.”

At 207 metres, Four Seasons I features 95 suites, all with indoor-outdoor living and no interior cabins, supported by a one-to-one guest-to-staff ratio. Design is by Tillberg Design of Sweden, with interiors by Martin Brudnizki Design Studio, creative direction from Prosper Assouline, and construction by Fincantieri. Floor-to-ceiling windows and large terraces emphasize the sea. Notable suites include the nearly 10,000-square-foot Funnel Suite at the prow and the 8,000-square-foot Loft Suite with an aft terrace.

Onboard, 11 restaurants and lounges span Mediterranean seafood to omakase, with Sedna hosting a rotating lineup of Michelin-starred chefs. Horizon Bar and Bar O serve as main spots for drinks. Wellness is centered at L’Oceana Spa, with a hammam, thermal circuit, and treatments including cryotherapy, infrared therapy, and hydrotherapy, plus yoga, meditation, and fitness.

The yacht’s transverse marina opens on both sides, with direct sea access and water sports during Marina Days. Shore and Sea Experiences are customized for each guest.

The inaugural Mediterranean season includes destinations like Saint-Tropez, Bodrum, Hydra, and Montenegro. In its first year, the yacht will offer 32 voyages across 52 sailings, visiting 130 destinations in more than 30 countries, with Caribbean and Bahamas sailings in winter.
