5 Things to Know for a New Year’s Eve Cruise

by Porthole Cruise & Travel December 6, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise & Travel

A New Year’s Eve cruise can be a refreshing way to celebrate the holiday. Surrounded by the open sea and breathtaking views, it offers unique experiences for travelers looking to ring in the new year. If you’re considering setting sail, here are five important things to know that will help ensure a smooth and enjoyable cruise experience.

Choose the Right Cruise Line and Itinerary

Selecting the appropriate cruise line is crucial. Different cruise lines cater to different demographics and preferences. Some focus on luxurious experiences, while others might lean toward family-friendly activities or adventure tourism. Look for lines known for their festive New Year’s celebrations, such as themed parties and midnight events. Analyze the itinerary as well: cruises that include vibrant ports of call might offer pre-celebration activities at destinations, while others may prioritize onboard festivities. Make sure to check if the cruise offers unique experiences, such as fireworks displays or special themed dinners, which can enhance your celebration.

Make Reservations for Special Events

Most cruise lines plan special events for New Year’s Eve, but these can fill up fast, especially for popular activities or dining options. Familiarize yourself with the itinerary and book your spots early. Look for special dining experiences, gala events, and nighttime entertainment. Some cruises may offer exclusive parties or gatherings, so make reservations when bookings open to secure your spot. Consider signing up for any pre-cruise activities or excursions that might enhance your celebration before midnight.

Pack Accordingly

Packing for a New Year’s Eve cruise requires attention to the dress code and climate. Some cruises host formal events, so plan to bring elegant attire for celebrations. For women, this may include cocktail dresses or formal gowns, and for men, suits or tuxedos may be appropriate. Also, pay attention to the weather; if you’re heading to a warmer destination, remember to pack summer attire. Don’t forget to include comfortable clothing for daytime activities and casual wear for relaxation. Practical items such as seasickness remedies, sunscreen, and any necessary medications should also make your packing list.

Stay Connected and Plan Ahead

Stay informed about the cruise schedule and happenings. Many cruise lines provide daily updates regarding the evening’s events; keeping track of them is essential. Use the cruise line’s app or printed schedules to plan your activities effectively. Share your plans with your travel companions to ensure everyone is on the same page. Setting meeting points is wise, given the potential for large crowds during celebrations. Familiarize yourself with the layout of the ship to navigate between events efficiently.

Enjoy and celebrate

Finally, get into the celebratory spirit! Interacting with fellow passengers can enrich your experience. Attend parties, join group activities, and take advantage of opportunities to meet new people. Shared experiences make the occasion even more memorable. Stay flexible and open to spontaneous plans, as this can lead to unexpected adventures. As the night unfolds, be present in the moment, capturing memories through photos and enjoying the ambiance of the festive atmosphere.

A New Year’s Eve cruise promises a vibrant way to usher in the new year. By considering the cruise line and itinerary, reserving special events, packing appropriately, staying organized, and embracing the celebratory atmosphere, you can ensure a fantastic experience. So pack your bags, set your course, and prepare for an unforgettable night at sea!

Why Montreal Should Be Your Next Travel Destination

by Bill Panoff December 3, 2024
written by Bill Panoff

The cruise experience truly begins long before you step aboard the ship. For me, Montreal was the perfect starting and ending point—captivating me with its vibrant energy and unique charm. Whether you’re seeking an exciting pre-cruise adventure or a tranquil post-cruise retreat, Montreal seamlessly enhances your voyage. Here’s why.

Photo: Arriving in Montreal

A City Alive with Art and Culture

Montreal has a vibe you won’t find anywhere else. Walking through its streets feels like stepping into a living gallery adorned with murals on historic buildings, all while the sounds of street performers fill the air. One striking feature was the giant mural of Leonard Cohen on Boulevard Saint-Laurent; standing beneath it, I could truly feel his poetic spirit woven into the city’s fabric.

But it’s not just about Cohen—Montreal’s creative energy resonates throughout the city, particularly in its museums and theaters. The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is packed with incredible artwork, and the Quartier des Spectacles buzzes with live performances and festivals year-round.

A Food Lover’s Paradise

Photo at St-Viateur Bagel Shop

No trip to Montreal is complete without indulging in its amazing food scene. I started my mornings with Montreal-style bagels, which are smaller, denser, and a touch sweeter than their New York counterparts. St-Viateur Bagel became my favorite spot, where I loved watching bakers pull fresh bagels from the wood-fired oven.

I also made sure to try poutine—the iconic Québécois dish that elevates fries, cheese curds, and gravy into a comforting treat. For the sweet-toothed, the maple-infused desserts celebrating Canada’s famous syrup are a must.

Must-See Attractions in Montreal

Bill Panoff and Geneviève Archambault at Jean-Talon Market

Montreal invites exploration, each neighborhood showcasing its own character. Here are a few must-see attractions:

Old Montreal (Vieux-Montréal): Wander the cobblestone streets and admire the historic architecture. Don’t miss the impressive Notre-Dame Basilica—its interior is as breathtaking as any in Europe.

Mount Royal (Mont Royal): This green escape offers stunning city views. Designed by Central Park’s landscape architect, it’s perfect for a hike or a peaceful retreat.

Jean-Talon Market: One of North America’s largest public markets, Jean-Talon is a treat for the senses, featuring fresh produce and artisanal items.

The Underground City: During the colder months, this vast network of underground pathways connects shopping centers, hotels, and metro stations—a creative solution to the winter chill.

Photo with Geneviève Archambault, Audrey Balbiers, and Mégane Di Stefano.

The Perfect Pre- and Post-Cruise Destination

Montreal’s port serves as an ideal launching point for cruises to New England, the Canadian Maritimes, and beyond. Spending a few extra days in the city allowed me to relax into vacation mode before boarding my ship, and provided an exciting escape to look forward to after disembarking.

Why Montreal Is Unforgettable

Montreal truly impresses with its unique blend of old-world charm and modern sophistication. The harmonious coexistence of history and innovation, the warmth of its residents, and the city’s vibrant spirit make it a destination that lingers in your heart long after you’ve left.

If you’re planning a cruise that departs from or arrives in Montreal, take my advice: don’t just rush through. Allow yourself the time to explore this remarkable city. You’ll discover, as I did, that Montreal is not just a port—it’s a destination worth savoring.

Palm House: Palm Beach’s Best-Kept Luxury Secret

by Porthole Cruise and Travel December 2, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Palm House is a notable spot on Palm Beach Island. Just days after its reopening, the service feels authentic, as if it has been welcoming guests for years. Every team member I interacted with was exceptional—a testament to the hiring team’s efforts.

With the recent opening of its first U.S. property, the Palm House Hotel, Iconic Luxury Hotels (ILH) is set to elevate the travel experience during the 2024 holiday season. The hotel serves as an ideal destination for pre-and post-cruise stays, blending elegance and comfort in a prime location. After 17 years of dormancy, the revival of Palm House, backed by ILH—owners of established properties like Chewton Glen and Cliveden House—marks a significant new chapter. Their expertise in luxury hospitality has revitalized the property, making its return an important moment for the Palm Beach Island community.

Designed by Cooper Carry and Muza Lab, the Palm House Hotel showcases a fresh aesthetic inspired by the vintage colors of Palm Beach, featuring a coral façade, carved cypress arbors, and pale-pink limestone arches. Dining at Palm House was another highlight. The Japanese-Peruvian cuisine exceeded expectations, with impressive presentation and outstanding quality.

Palm House Hotel Lobby

“This marks a pivotal moment in the brand’s history as we announce our first Iconic Luxury Hotel in the United States,” said Andrew Stembridge, executive director of Iconic Luxury Hotels.

Location

Palm House Hotel is conveniently located near the beach and Worth Avenue, catering to luxury travelers and serving as a gateway to cruise adventures. Its proximity to port facilities allows guests to enjoy a comfortable stay before embarking on or returning from their trips.

Accommodations

Palm House Hotel Standard Guestroom

The hotel features 79 spacious rooms, including 21 suites—some of the largest on the island. Each room includes floor-to-ceiling windows, arched doorways, and private terraces. The Presidential Suite boasts a double-height living area and a balcony overlooking the pool deck, complemented by coral headboards, woven wall sconces, and walls adorned with lattice and antique mirrors.

Guests will enter the Palm Bar from the grand porte cochere, where they will find a lounge featuring three custom coral Murano-glass chandeliers and a pink marble bar. The lounge floor showcases a matte and polished marble mosaic beneath an antique-mirrored ceiling, providing plush ruby seating for cocktails and snacks.

Palm House Hotel Outdoor Pool

The Sunset Pool Deck includes a sunken heated pool and cabana beds, along with poolside service, attentive butlers, and a full beverage menu.

The Palm House Dining Room offers all-day dining with intimate seating and an open kitchen, accommodating 88 guests and extending to an outdoor terrace.

A Prime Location for Cruise Guests

Located steps from pristine beaches and upscale shopping, the Palm House Hotel provides a relaxing stay for cruise travelers before and after their journeys.

As the grand opening approaches, the Palm House Hotel aims to become a standout luxury destination in Palm Beach. “This is an exciting step for L+R Hotels as we continue to grow our Iconic Luxury Hotels portfolio internationally,” said Francisco Macedo, senior vice president of Iconic Luxury Hotels.

About Iconic Luxury Hotels

Founded in December 2016, Iconic Luxury Hotels is part of L+R Hotels, which manages over 105 hotels worldwide. Start the New Year with a Cruise

by Porthole Cruise and Travel December 2, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

As the holiday festivities end, January invites us to seek ways to refresh and rejuvenate. A cruise during this month offers an ideal escape from winter blues. Here are five solid reasons to embark on a cruise in January.

COMBAT WINTER SLUMP

January can feel particularly long and dreary, especially in colder regions. The post-holiday slump can set in, making a change of scenery even more appealing. A cruise lets you bask in the sunshine, explore tropical destinations, and enjoy warm breezes. Imagine yourself lounging on a deck, drink in hand, watching a stunning sunset over the ocean. This escape offers the perfect antidote to winter’s chill.

Great Deals and Discounts

January is renowned for its incredible travel deals. After the holiday season, many cruise lines offer significant discounts to fill their ships. This means you can find reduced rates on cabins, onboard credits, and inclusive packages. Booking your cruise in January allows you to enjoy luxurious experiences without exceeding your budget. There has never been a better time to treat yourself to a well-deserved getaway.

Less Crowded Destinations

Many travelers tend to bypass trips in January, resulting in fewer crowds at popular cruising destinations. This offers you a more enjoyable experience as you explore ports of call and enjoy onboard amenities. With less competition for sun loungers, dining spots, and excursions, you can immerse yourself in the cruise experience without the usual hustle. This added tranquility enhances your vacation, allowing you to savor every moment.

Health and Wellness Focus

As people return to their routines after holiday indulgences, a cruise can be an excellent way to prioritize wellness. Many cruise lines offer robust health and fitness programs, including yoga classes, personal training sessions, and spa services. You can reset your mind and body while on vacation, sampling healthy dining options and taking part in wellness activities. This blend of relaxation and rejuvenation aligns perfectly with those New Year’s resolutions to improve personal well-being.

Reconnect with Loved Ones

January is an ideal time to reconnect with family and friends following the holiday rush. A cruise provides quality time together without the distractions of daily life. Participating in onboard activities or exploring new ports fosters an atmosphere for strong bonding. Engaging in unique experiences together—whether it’s discovering a new destination, enjoying local cuisine, or simply relaxing poolside—creates lasting memories and deepens relationships.

With a focus on health and wellness and the chance to reconnect with loved ones, this is the perfect time to embark on a voyage. So grab your sunscreen and set sail!

Sustainability is the New Luxury

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine November 29, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

As more people notice the threat wasteful consumerism poses to our planet, the definition of luxury is changing — especially in the tourism industry.

The old mindset (expense equals “class”) is dying. Sustainability is replacing lavish spending as hotel guests value clean air and water and a pristine environment as luxuries in themselves.
Green Pearls–certified hotels are well aware of the change.

One, the OLM Nature Escape in South Tyrol, is completely energy-self-sufficient. Guests can enjoy maximum comfort (like a heated, indoor/outdoor natural pool, or a cellar of 60 natural, organic and biodynamic wines) while leaving a minimal carbon footprint.

At the Hubertus Mountain Refugio, a private spring supplies the pool with 5,000 liters ( 1,320 gallons) of fresh water daily, saving 1,800 cubic meters (63,600 cubic feet) of drinkable water each year.
And the Hotel Das Rubezahl, a lavish escape in the Bavarian Alps, is built entirely from environmentally friendly materials, with Neuschwanstein Castle always in view.

Cat Travels

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine November 27, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Love culture? Love cats? You can satisfy both those passions by planning a cat trip, visiting historic sites worldwide that house lovable felines.

For instance:

The Hemingway House and Museum in Key West, Florida. See where the iconic author lived and wrote, and meet the 60-plus cats who also call the place home. Many have six toes on each paw and are said to have descended from Snow White, Ernest and Pauline’s family pet.

The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. Meet more than 80 pampered felines who help keep the pest population down in Catherine the Great’s art collection.

Southwark Cathedral in London. Hodge, the resident kitty, “pays his rent” by catching mice who invade this 1,000-year-old holy place. He inherited the post from Doorkins Magnificat.

Affection

Five-Month Countdown: MSC World America’s Miami Debut

by Julie Bouchner November 25, 2024
written by Julie Bouchner

MSC World America is taking shape and will debut in Miami in less than five months!

This ship marks a major advancement in MSC Cruises’ World-Class platform, offering a new cruising experience. Next year, guests can look forward to a blend of European style and American comfort across seven unique districts, each designed to enhance their vacation.

MSC World America is currently under construction at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. The ship is in the outfitting stage, where interiors, public spaces, and facilities are installed.

Bernhard Stacher, SVP Shipboard Hospitality Operations, MSC Cruises, said: “We’ve invested a lot into tailoring MSC World America to deliver a truly memorable cruise experience, with new restaurants, bars, experiences and spaces. With the only Eataly restaurant at sea, a brand-new Greek restaurant Paxos, and MSC Cruises’ first comedy club The Loft, there’s really a space and experience for every guest.”

The ship will be named in Miami on April 9, 2025, as part of MSC’s North American expansion. The cruise line has released new photos showcasing:

The Harbour: an outdoor park for families with a Cliffhanger ride, a water park, a ropes course, a complimentary grab-and-go restaurant, and relaxation areas.
The World Galleria: a three-deck area filled with dining, bars, and shops.
The World Theater: featuring spectacular live productions.
The ship’s exterior, including the recently mounted MSC logo on the funnel.

William Monts de Oca Rivera, Head of Guest Experience Innovation, MSC Cruises, said: “One of the biggest innovations for MSC World America is The Harbour, part of the Family Aventura district, a brand-new revolutionary outdoor venue specially designed for kids and families to gather, play and relax together. It’s home to Cliffhanger—a state-of-the-art swing attraction 160 feet above the ocean that is going to bring a totally new dimension to the cruise experience.”

MSC World America cruises are available to book now, with the first sailing scheduled for April 12, 2025.

Hannah Waddingham Stars in New Princess Cruises Ad

by Julie Bouchner November 25, 2024
written by Julie Bouchner

Princess Cruises has launched a new global advertising campaign, “Love Boat by Hannah,” featuring Emmy-winning actress and musical theater star Hannah Waddingham.

Waddingham revives the iconic theme song from the original Love Boat series (1977-1986) with a modern twist, honoring Princess Cruises’ legacy.

“Hannah Waddingham brings something truly special to one of the most recognizable theme songs in television history and Princess Cruises brand anthem,” said John Padgett, president of Princess Cruises. “As Godmother of Sun Princess, she infuses the beloved tune with her extraordinary talent and playful energy, paying tribute to The Love Boat‘s Hollywood legacy, which featured thousands of memorable guest stars. Her performance beautifully captures the timeless elegance and spirit of adventure that define the Princess Cruises experience.”

ABOUT THE AD

  • Filmed by director Dave Laden of Hungry Man and produced with Princess Cruises’ agency, Terri & Sandy, the campaign showcases Hannah Waddingham enjoying luxury experiences aboard a Princess cruise.
  • Whether singing the theme song with cocktails, lounging by the pool, interacting with dolphins, or relaxing during a massage, Waddingham adds humor and elegance to each scene.
  • Waddingham recorded her rendition of the classic track at Criteria Recording Studios in Miami.
  • The campaign will include 60-, 30-, 15-, and 06-second ads across the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia, appearing on connected TV, digital platforms, and social media.
  • The 60-second spot will also be showcased in U.S. cinemas before films like Wicked and Gladiator 2.

Earlier this year, Waddingham became the Godmother of the new Sun Princess, joining the ranks of notable figures like Diana, Princess of Wales, Audrey Hepburn, and Sophia Loren.

“Hannah Waddingham has a presence as powerful and radiant as the Sun Princess herself,” said JP Gomez, Creative Director at Terri & Sandy. “From start to finish, she brought brilliance and humor to the creative process, contributing clever, witty ideas that elevated the entire campaign. This production was a celebration of nostalgia blended with the sleek, contemporary elegance of the Sun Princess. We couldn’t have asked for better partners than Hannah and the Princess team.”

Readers’ Choice Award-Winners for 2024

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine November 22, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

“Our readers are the real experts when it comes to judging the best of the best in the cruise industry! Here’s what they had to say for 2024.” — Bill Panoff, Editor-In-Chief

Check out who’s left your fellow cruisers impressed … and see what might inspire your next great vacation.

Editor’s Note: Due to an excess of personal research, the winning signature cocktail was given the wrong name in the published edition of Porthole. The voters selected Norwegian Cruise Line’s mango drink as their favorite, but the name was inaccurately given: It should be as it appears here, the Mango Meltdown. We probably shouldn’t have another.

Save Big on Cruises with Black Friday Promotions

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 21, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

As Black Friday approaches, many shoppers focus on deals for electronics and clothing. However,  travelers know that Black Friday is also a prime time to book a cruise. Here are some reasons to book a cruise during this shopping season.

Significant Discounts

Cruise lines often offer substantial discounts during Black Friday. You can find reduced cruise fares and onboard credits, making it an ideal time to book your dream vacation. These promotions are typically more generous than those available at other times of the year.

Access to Limited Itineraries

During Black Friday, cruise lines may release exclusive itineraries or limited-edition voyages. If you’re interested in popular destinations, booking during this period ensures you can secure a spot before these trips fill up.

Simplified Planning

The holiday season can be hectic, but planning your cruise during Black Friday can streamline your travel arrangements. Booking early allows you to avoid last-minute stress and gives you something exciting to look forward to in the new year.

 Benefits for Group Travel

If you’re planning a trip with family or friends, Black Friday deals can lead to significant savings. Many cruise lines provide additional perks for group bookings, such as half off a second guest or onboard credits, making it easier and more affordable for everyone.

Flexible Booking Policies

Many cruise lines have adjusted their policies to offer flexibility, especially during Black Friday sales. This includes flexible payment options and updated cancellation policies. These adjustments allow you to plan confidently, knowing your investment is protected.

Ideal Gift Option

A cruise is a great gift, particularly for those hard to shop for. Booking during Black Friday can help you secure a memorable experience for a loved one at a lower cost. Whether for a weekend or an extended journey, it’s a gift they’ll appreciate.

Don’t miss the opportunity to plan an unforgettable vacation at a great price. Start your search and get ready to explore new destinations by sea. Happy cruising!
