5 Cruise Goals in 2025

by Porthole Cruise and Travel December 31, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

As 2025 approaches, it’s time to start planning your cruise adventures. Cruises offer a unique way to explore multiple destinations while enjoying onboard amenities. Here are five cruise-related goals to consider for 2025!

Experience a Themed Cruise

In 2025, choose a themed cruise that aligns with your interests. Options abound, from culinary cruises with acclaimed chefs to music-themed voyages featuring live performances. These cruises often include exclusive workshops and excursions tailored to the theme, providing a deeper engagement with what you love. A themed cruise can enhance your travel experience while allowing you to connect with like-minded travelers.

Explore a New Region or Route

Make it a goal to explore a cruise destination you’ve never visited. Consider the Mediterranean, the fjords of Norway, or the beaches of the South Pacific. Each region features distinct cultures and attractions. You can discover new favorites and broaden your travel experience by stepping out of your comfort zone. Research itineraries with unique ports of call to maximize your adventure.

Plan a Group Cruise with Friends or Family

Cruising provides a fantastic opportunity for bonding, so consider planning a group cruise in 2025. Gather friends or family members to share in the adventure. Collaborate on your itinerary and choose a cruise line accommodating everyone’s preferences. Enjoy shared experiences, from dining to excursions, that can strengthen your relationships. Group cruising often comes with group discounts and special amenities, making it even more appealing.

Try a River Cruise Experience

If you’ve primarily cruised on the ocean, set a goal to try a river cruise in 2025. River cruises offer an intimate way to explore destinations, taking you through scenic waterways and charming towns. With smaller ships, you’ll gain access to places larger vessels can’t visit. Options abound, from the historic Rhine River to the enchanting Seine. This style of cruising focuses on cultural immersion, allowing for deeper connections with local communities.

Prioritize Relaxation and Self-Care On board

While cruising is often about exploration, make it a goal to prioritize relaxation and self-care in 2025. Enjoy onboard amenities like spas, fitness classes, or serene lounges. Many cruise lines now offer wellness programs that include yoga sessions and healthy dining options. Allow yourself to unwind and recharge while enjoying ocean views. Embracing relaxation can enhance your overall enjoyment of the cruise experience.

Set your goals, book that cruise, and get ready for an incredible year on the seas!

The Mummies and Yummies of Cairo

by Steve Leland December 30, 2024
written by Steve Leland

Visiting Cairo offers an introduction to over 4,000 years of history, making it essential to see the iconic Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, and other ancient treasures. Don’t miss the captivating Mummy Room in the Egyptian Museum, where you can view King Tut’s golden mask. The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), the world’s largest archaeological museum, is now open, showcasing over 250,000 relics of the past.

However, as this was my third visit to Cairo, I was eager to explore beyond the typical tourist attractions and indulge in the city’s culinary scene. Turning to the food tour experts at A Chef’s Tour, I sought to satisfy my craving for regional delicacies.

Our late afternoon journey began at the main gates of Al Azhar Mosque, a historic landmark commissioned in 970 as the capital of the Fatimid Caliphate. This served as my first taste of Cairo’s rich history, but I was ready to eat. Our guide Loay outlined our itinerary, and we navigated through the bustling crowds of afternoon shoppers and street vendors in Old Cairo.

RELATED: The Best Street Eats in Kolkata

Koshari

Koshari

Our first stop was a street café specializing in crispy falafel patties, served with cucumber and coriander salad, all wrapped in pita bread. It was a delightful and unique appetizer. After passing vibrant shops selling colorful fabrics, we settled at another local venue to enjoy koshari, a carb-heavy dish of mini macaroni, lentils, and rice, topped with crispy fried onions. Diners choose from a basic tomato sauce, spicy chili, or garlic vinegar; koshari is typically sold exclusively at places dedicated to this dish.

We then ducked into the labyrinthine alleyways of Old Cairo, winding through a small vegetable market and visiting a spice vendor who explained the array of spices used in Egyptian cooking. As we navigated narrow passages lined with lingerie shops, all staffed by male clerks, we pondered whether this was an answer to the question of what lies beneath the often unflattering black burka—perhaps an Egyptian version of Victoria’s Secret.

We squeezed into a three-table kiosk amid the pedestrian traffic to sample hawawshi, a pita pocket stuffed with minced lamb, onions, and herbs, baked like a Mexican quesadilla. Further down the street, we encountered a line of locals at an unassuming counter. A man accepted foil-wrapped dishes for cooking in a massive oven. Loay explained that many residents lack space or electricity for ovens in their modest apartments, so they bring their prepared meals here, paying a dollar or two for the service.

The pedestrian paths were shared by tiny shops selling quilted blankets, motor scooter repair shops, food vendors, and tuk-tuk taxis, capturing the essence of Old Cairo street life. There was a butcher, a baker, and likely a candlestick maker somewhere.

Next, we sampled feteer baladi, a cross between pizza and crepe. This light, flaky pastry is stretched thin, folded over, and baked in a domed brick oven. It can be filled with meats and vegetables, or—as we chose—brushed with butter and dusted with powdered sugar. Sweet and satisfying! Later, we took a seat in a small grotto where we enjoyed tender, oven-baked lamb alongside mulukhiyah, a thick green soup made from mallow leaves. While the soup may not be universally loved, the delicious lamb balanced its unique flavor.

Forget Michelin stars; we concluded our culinary journey under the stars with a cup of authentic Egyptian coffee and a thought-provoking conversation with Loay. There were no caramel mocha lattes or pumpkin spice options—just genuine Egyptian coffee. Today, I walked like an Egyptian, savoring a food tour that goes beyond simply being led and fed. It’s A Chef’s Tour approach to understanding Cairo’s historical significance, enriched by complex flavors that most tourists will never experience.

Holland America Brings the Caribbean On Board

by Judi Cuervo December 27, 2024
written by Judi Cuervo

I capture a few images of Holland America’s Nieuw Amsterdam against a backdrop of a sparkling blue sea and powder-soft sand. Before tucking my phone away, I check the weather app and see that when the cruise ends, I’ll be returning home to single-digit wind chills and a snowy forecast.

Until then, I’m sailing the warm, sultry islands of the Caribbean, eager to indulge in all they have to offer.

Fortunately, Holland America provides two innovative Caribbean-themed programs that enhance the experience.

A Taste of the Caribbean…Literally!

On all Holland America Caribbean sailings, island classics—marked with a special “Port to Plate” logo—supplement the superb menus the line is known for. While Main Dining Room guests can stick with traditional offerings, why not savor local flavors with a spicy chili Caribbean shrimp cocktail, Jamaican beef patty, jerk lamb shank, or spiced pork belly with pineapple salsa? Even the Pinnacle Grill features Caribbean-inspired dishes like jerked chicken bao and crab and shrimp cakes alongside its full steakhouse menu.

Once, during a seven-day sailing, the Lido Market hosts a Caribbean-themed buffet dinner. Begin your meal with cauliflower and coconut bisque before enjoying dishes like pork ribs, jerked chicken, fish cou-cou, Caribbean empanadas, breaded shrimp, seafood paella, and tender jerked pork belly from the live carving station. A delectable selection of Caribbean breads and salads showcasing tropical fruits and vegetables complements the meal.

At the Lido Market, guests can also experience Holland America’s Caribbean Seafood Boil—a tropical twist on the popular Alaskan Seafood Boil. Priced at $35 per person (plus an 18% service charge), this specialty dining experience features unlimited fresh Caribbean seafood sourced through Holland America’s Global Fresh Fish program, ensuring sustainable, wild-caught, and responsibly farmed fish are delivered from port to plate within 48 hours.

Bahamian Fire Engine and Egg Skillet

If you’re craving Caribbean flavors before dinner, check out Holland America’s Caribbean brunch, offering Jamaican Banana Pancakes with Toasted Pecans, a spicy Jerk Burger, and a Bahamian Fire Engine and Egg Skillet—a sizzling dish of rice, black beans, corned beef, and red peppers topped with a fried egg.

Yo Ho Ho…And Some Bottles of Rum!

For those who enjoy a drink, the Caribbean is synonymous with rum, and Holland America has launched an innovative Rum Ambassador Program aboard all its ships sailing in the region. Developed in partnership with James Beard Award-winning drinks historian David Wondrich and Jeff Berry, dubbed “The Indiana Jones of Tiki Drinks” by The New York Times, the program offers tastings, seminars, and five newly created cocktails, including a rum punch reminiscent of what was consumed by 17th-century Caribbean pirates. Pirates Punch—a blend of rich, pot-distilled rum, Cointreau, citrus, and a sprinkle of nutmeg—will even be served in individual conch shell punch bowls at Holland America’s Ocean Bar!

Aboard the Nieuw Amsterdam, Anne Marie Cruz Garcia, who joined Holland America in 2011 as a beverage server and became a bartender two and a half years later, has been appointed the ship’s Rum Ambassador. In this role, she shares insights about rum’s origins and anecdotes during interactive lectures and tastings that explore its historical and modern formulations, aromas, and flavor profiles. Each Holland America ship sailing the Caribbean features its own Rum Ambassador, trained extensively in rum’s rich history and flavors.

Want a sneak peek? Try making a Green Swizzle, one of the cocktails from Holland America’s Rum Ambassador Program. You might find yourself thirsty for more!

El Presidente
– 1.5 oz. Plantation/Planteray 3-Star White Rum
– 1.5 oz. Dolin Blanc Vermouth
– 1 tsp. Orange Cacao
– 1/2 tsp. Grenadine
– Orange Twist

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker, shake, and garnish with an orange twist.

Here’s The Deal With Delhi

by Steve Leland December 24, 2024
written by Steve Leland

Despite New Delhi’s ubiquitous traffic and the smog and grit typical of a city with 26 million residents, you will find a vibrant humanity in action. Ironically, the metropolitan area is virtually surrounded by lush greenery, where boulevards are shaded by magnificent banyan and palm trees, and massive roundabouts encircle beautifully landscaped mini-parks.

India’s allure, rich with ancient culture and colonial history, comes with a caveat: navigating the kinetic energy of this destination is not a do-it-yourself adventure. Choosing the experts at Sayang Holidays to curate every detail of our three-day pre-cruise itinerary proved excellent. The comfort of being personally greeted upon our arrival at the airport and having a private guide to explore New Delhi and make a side journey to Agra, home to the iconic Taj Mahal, was invaluable.

Monuments, mosques, and markets abound everywhere. Strolling through narrow alleyways with shops selling everything imaginable is an eye-opening experience. Tailors and jewelers intermingle with fruit and vegetable vendors, makeshift cafes, handicraft shops, shoe stores, clothing boutiques, and wedding apparel shops. Hindu and Sikh temples peacefully coexist alongside Muslim mosques.

The Akshardham Temple, a stunning spiritual oasis sprawled across 100 acres, is surrounded by intricately designed shrines and is widely regarded as one of India’s greatest monuments. Our visits included the Gandhi Memorial site, the sprawling Red Fort, and the impressive Memorial Gate, culminating in a breathtaking exploration of Humayun’s Tomb, a magnificent example of Mughal architecture built in the 16th century.

While the attractions of both Old and New Delhi impress in their own right, nothing compares to the majestic beauty of the Taj Mahal in Agra—the most extravagant monument ever conceived by an emperor, dedicated as a symbol of love for his wife. This white marble masterpiece, overlooking the Yamuna River, was constructed over 22 years ago by 20,000 workers. The mausoleum is surrounded by elaborate gardens, a mosque, and grand palatial buildings. Nearby, the red sandstone Agra Fort dominates the landscape and encloses the palatial grounds that once hosted Emperor Shah Jahan.

Unfortunately, our travel schedule precluded us from participating in Sayang Holidays’ popular and more in-depth Golden Triangle itinerary, which includes Jaipur. However, this pre-cruise journey of discovery has only heightened our motivation to return to India’s enchanting allure.

A Toast to Italian Excellence with Italian Travel Consultant Be Unique

by Porthole Cruise and Travel December 20, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

In the world of luxury travel, few brands can rival the remarkable legacy of Italian Travel Consultant (ITC), a family-run enterprise celebrating 55 years and spanning three generations. At Cannes ILTM, ITC brought this legacy to life through its luxury travel department pop-up, Be Unique in Italy®️; reflecting a steadfast dedication to authenticity and unparalleled elegance in crafting extraordinary travel experiences.

This bespoke experience allowed guests to immerse themselves in the quintessence of Italian hospitality and products. It wasn’t just about presenting excellence—it was about sharing the essence of Italian culture through extraordinarily genuine culinary and human experiences.

“It was undoubtedly the gastronomic highlight of the week,” remarked one attendee, highlighting the pop- up’s significant success and lasting impact. Another guest shared, “It felt like an emotional journey into the heart of Italy rather than just a presentation.”

Marco Schiavo, President of Italian Travel Consultant (ITC)

Company History

Italian Travel Consultant (ITC) was founded in 1969 by Impero Perry Schiavo and has maintained a strong family legacy across three generations. The company is recognized as a leading Italian Destination Management Company (DMC) and operates exclusively on a B2B model for inbound international tourism, addressing diverse travel needs from individual clients to corporate events. Throughout its history, ITC has forged deep-rooted relationships with local suppliers to uphold the highest standards of service. Noteworthy milestones include organizing over 60 events in the MICE market since

1971, orchestrating the first private dinner in the Vatican Museums in the 1980s, and devising innovative solutions to access challenges in Venice in 2022. The company is also known for hosting exclusive events, such as the first-ever opening of the Vittoriano in Rome in 2023. With four strategically located offices across Italy, ITC continues to reflect the country’s beauty, culture, and passion, ensuring unforgettable experiences for travelers from North, Central, and South America.

(From left to right) Silvio Schiavo, Marco Schiavo and Impero Perry Schiavo.

Q&A with Marco Schiavo: The Vision Behind Be Unique in Italy®️

Q: How would you define luxury today?

A: “ In today’s saturated market, where appearance often prevails, true excellence lies in what goes unseen—creativity, authentic relationships, and meticulous dedication reflected in every detail. For Be Unique in Italy®️, luxury isn’t about excess but meaning. It’s about crafting soulful, authentic experiences designed to be lived, not just “photo-captured”. This philosophy, also shared by Sofia and Silvio, the third generation of our family business, was instrumental in bringing our vision to life at Cannes ILTM,” he added.

Q: How has ITC maintained its leadership after 55 years of excellence?

A: “The secret is staying true to our roots while evolving with the times. In recent years, the industry has undergone significant changes. The post-COVID need to travel and live in the present has led to a surge in demand, but it has also caused market saturation, with offers that often lack the know-how needed to uphold high standards. In this context, our experience and meticulous attention to detail allow us to distinguish the authentic from the improvised, ensuring our proposals remain unique and of the highest quality.”

With a steadfast commitment to excellence and a deep-rooted passion for Italy, ITC remains dedicated to creating unforgettable travel experiences that resonate with authenticity and elegance. Click here to learn more about the company and its unique offerings.

Why Cruises Make the Best Last-Minute Holiday Gifts

by Porthole Cruise and Travel December 18, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

The holiday season is here, and for many, the search for the perfect last-minute gift can be quite a challenge. If you’re looking for something truly unique and unforgettable, consider gifting a cruise. This exceptional option offers a memorable experience and opens the door to future adventures.

The Value of Gifting a Cruise

Experience Over Material: One of the standout benefits of gifting a cruise is that it’s an experience rather than just another physical object. Experiences create lasting memories that can bring more joy than any material gift. Visualize your loved ones exploring beautiful destinations, enjoying exquisite dining, and relaxing on deck.

Future Travel Flexibility: Unlike immediate gifts, cruise bookings allow flexibility regarding when to travel. Many cruise lines offer varied itineraries, enabling recipients to select a trip that fits their schedule. The anticipation of a future cruise adds excitement that lasts throughout the year.

Bonding Time for Families: Cruises are excellent for families looking to reconnect. By gifting a cruise, you’re not just providing a vacation; you’re fostering opportunities for loved ones to bond and create shared memories. It can serve as a meaningful holiday experience that brings everyone together.

Diverse Options: There’s a wide range of cruise choices, from luxurious ocean liners to smaller river cruises, catering to different tastes and budgets. Whether your loved ones wish to bask in the Caribbean sun, discover the charm of Europe, or venture on an Alaskan journey, you can find the right cruise to suit their interests.

Last-Minute Booking Made Easy

Finding an appropriate last-minute gift can feel daunting. Fortunately, booking a cruise is straightforward and can often be completed online in just a few minutes. Many cruise lines also run last-minute deals, ensuring your gift remains within budget.

E-Gift Certificates: If you’re truly short on time, consider purchasing an e-gift certificate from a cruise line. This approach lets the recipient choose their destination and travel dates, making it a personalized gift.

Comprehensive Packages: Many cruise lines offer all-inclusive packages that cover shore excursions, dining options, and onboard activities. Purchasing these packages can enhance your loved ones’ overall cruising experience.

Whether a family trip or a romantic getaway, cruises offer the chance to create cherished memories together. So wrap up your holiday shopping with the gift of a cruise, and ensure your loved ones start the new year with excitement and anticipation for their next adventure. Happy holidays!

The Land of Smiles is dealing with the challenges of pollution, climate change, and the millions of annual tourists. Creative adaptations abound, and travelers can make a difference by seeking out greener, more ethical options that are not sacrifices, but actually improve the travel experience.

Green on the Water

Bangkok is a city of canals, and the muddy waters of the Chao Phraya River also curl serpentine through the capital city. Life along the river is a destination in itself, and boat traffic — from ferries and private boats to barges and pleasure cruises — take their toll on the water quality. A common mode of travel is the long-tail boat: a narrow, canopied wooden boat with a repurposed diesel truck engine attached to a steerable long pole with a propeller at the end of it. These produce pollution, and the engine noise is enough to make one shout to be heard. But Mr. Sun had a solution.

Sira ‶Mr. Sun″ Lipipattanawit of Suksamran Electric Boat confirmed my booking for a group of four, and we met him at a pier a short walk from Bangkok′s Skytrain in Thonburi on the west side of the Chao Phraya, almost a time capsule in contrast to modern Bangkok to the east. We saw him before we heard him — unusual for this sort of boat — and then we spotted the solar panels along the top. Mr. Sun squatted on the bow with what looked like a drone controller in his hands as he maneuvered the craft into place so we could board.

He converted the diesel engine to electric and installed panels that, with charged batteries, maintained enough juice for over 5 hours of touring waterways only wide enough for a couple boats to pass. We slipped quietly past homes built along the water, under walking bridges, stopping at temples, a museum, and several restaurants. Mr. Sun′s boat was so silent you forgot you weren′t merely coasting, and he could narrate the tour without shouting. We pulled up next to a banyan tree full of .…

Royal Caribbean is introducing the Royal Beach Club Paradise Island in December 2025, the first location in its Royal Beach Club Collection.

Royal Beach Club Paradise Island offers an all-inclusive beach day experience on Paradise Island. The property features pools, a swim-up bar, and local eateries. Bahamian artisans and live music will also be showcased, providing a unique cultural experience. Vacationers can purchase day passes and cabanas starting in spring 2025.

“The Royal Beach Club Collection is designed for every type of family and vacationer to get everything they want out of their ideal beach day – no matter the vibe they’re looking for,” said Michael Bayley, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean International. “With the first-of-its-kind Royal Beach Club Paradise Island, we continue to super-serve our guests with a tailored experience at one of our most highly visited destinations, building on nearly five decades of collaboration with the community and government of The Bahamas.”

MORE ABOUT THE BEACH CLUB

The beach club is divided into three zones: Family Beach, Chill Beach, and Party Cove. Family Beach features a zero-entry pool, beach games, and a one-of-a-kind Ultimate Family Cabana with personal attendant service. Chill Beach offers relaxation and Caribbean culture with shopping and local cuisine. Party Cove is a beachfront cove with a swim-up bar and VIP poolside service.

In 2025, Royal Caribbean is expanding its vacation offerings to Nassau and Royal Beach Club Paradise Island in The Bahamas from six cities, including Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Port Canaveral. The lineup ranges from three-night getaways on Utopia of the Seas to 7-night escapes on Symphony of the Seas.

Royal Beach Club Paradise Island joins Perfect Day at CocoCay and future additions in Cozumel (2026) and Mexico (2027), giving adventurers more options for creating their perfect vacation days across the Caribbean.

Half Moon Cay Renamed to RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay

by Julie Bouchner December 10, 2024
written by Julie Bouchner

Half Moon Cay in The Bahamas will be renamed RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay, to reflect recent enhancements announced by Holland America Line and Carnival Cruise Line.

“Holland America guests have loved Half Moon Cay for its natural beauty since it opened as a port of call in 1997,” said Beth Bodensteiner, president of Holland America Line. “The south side of the island, where Holland America has always visited, will remain the secluded paradise our guests are accustomed to and a marquee destination for almost every cruise visiting the Caribbean. The new beach club and refreshed food and beverage spaces will embrace and preserve the island’s pristine beauty while enhancing our award-winning experience.”

The two cruise lines plan improvements, including an expanded beachfront, new lunch venues, bars, and features that emphasize the site’s natural beauty. A new pier on the north side will enable ships, including Carnival’s Excel class vessels, to dock for the first time.

Guests will enter through plazas on the south and north sides, spanning over a mile of white-sand beach. The south side will see updates such as a beach club, a new lunch venue, and renovated facilities. The north side will feature two lunch venues, several bars, and a tram service for easier navigation. Additional lounging areas, cabanas, and a new shore excursion pier will connect guests with activities. All upgrades at RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay will blend seamlessly into the island’s natural environment.

“Calling this piece of paradise RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay reinforces our commitment to preserve the attributes that make the destination so appealing as we expand access and welcome more guests to the destination’s crystal-clear waters, white-sand beaches and lush landscapes,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “Many of our 2026 and beyond itineraries will feature both RelaxAway and Celebration Key, providing guests with complimentary experiences enjoying both idyllic and ultimate beach days.”

The enhancements are scheduled to begin in summer 2026 and will continue through the end of the year. More details will be shared in the coming months.

Everything You Need to Know for Disembarkation Day

by Porthole Cruise and Travel December 9, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Disembarkation day can be hectic. After days of relaxation and exploration, it’s time to bid farewell to your cruise. With proper preparation, you can make this final phase of your trip smooth and stress-free. Here’s what you need to know for disembarkation day.

Understand the Schedule

Most cruise lines provide a detailed schedule for disembarkation. Be sure to check for specific times for your ship, as they can vary significantly. Passengers are often assigned a specific time to leave the ship based on their travel plans or cabin location.

Tip: Set an alarm for your disembarkation time and try to wake up early to enjoy a leisurely breakfast before leaving.

Pack the Night Before

To ensure a smooth disembarkation process, pack your bags the night before. Keep in mind that you’ll need to leave your luggage outside your cabin door by a certain time, usually in the evening before disembarkation.

Pro Tip: Use luggage tags provided by the cruise line to ensure your bags are easily identifiable.

Settle Outstanding Charges

Before you disembark, make sure to review your onboard account. Settle any outstanding balances or purchases at guest services. It’s much less stressful to deal with these matters while you’re still on board.

 Know Your Customs Regulations

If you’re returning to your home country or disembarking in a new country, familiarize yourself with the customs regulations related to goods you may be bringing back. This includes restrictions on food, alcohol, or souvenirs.

Tip: Make sure any purchased liquor is within the allowed limits, especially for flights or cruises that have specific regulations.

Prepare Important Documents

Ensure you have your necessary travel documents ready, including your passport, ID, and disembarkation card. Keeping these documents within easy reach will save you time and hassle when leaving the ship.

Arrange Transportation in Advance

Whether you’re heading straight home, to a hotel, or to an excursion, it’s best to arrange your transportation in advance. Research available options like shuttles, taxis, or rideshare services. Some cruise lines also offer transportation packages, which can be a convenient option.

Don’t Forget to Enjoy Your Last Breakfast

Disembarkation day can be busy, but don’t forget to enjoy your last onboard meal. Many cruise lines offer an extensive breakfast buffet, so take advantage of it one final time and savor those memories!

 Be Mindful of Your Belongings

Make a checklist of everything you need to bring off the ship. Remember to double-check your cabin, the bathroom, and any other areas where you may have left personal items.

With a bit of foresight and preparation, you’ll be off to your next adventure in no time. Safe travels!
