Step Inside Sanctuary

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine January 15, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Cairo is an electrifying place. Loud, chaotic and very crowded, this Middle Eastern megalopolis is fascinating, yet it also can be overwhelming in large doses. It has another side too, though. A quiet and peaceful side. Step inside one of Cairo’s churches, and you will find yourself immersed in hushed tranquility. The churches of Cairo are not only calm amid the commotion. They are also very important parts of the country’s Christian culture and history.

“Being a Christian in Egypt is an experience of rich heritage and deep-rooted faith,” Egyptian student Haitham Gendy explains. “The churches here are not just buildings; they are sanctuaries of history, culture, and unwavering belief. They tell the stories of generations who have kept the flame of their faith burning brightly despite challenges.”

When travelers want to see the churches here, they usually head to the famous Coptic Cairo. However, you can find many other lesser-known but just as remarkable churches dotted all around the city. While these holy places are beloved to Coptic Christians, they are unknown to most travelers.

Church of  the Virgin Mary at Zeitoun

Usually called simply “Zeitoun Church,” this beautiful, brightly colored building is probably the Coptic Christian community’s most important church. For over three years beginning on April 2, 1968, witnesses began seeing an apparition of the Virgin Mary on its roof. Millions of Egyptians eventually witnessed this, but many were, of course, skeptical. High-ranking Egyptian bishops and priests soon undertook an investigation. They ultimately determined this was no hoax and the apparitions were indeed truly supernatural. This caused millions of people from different faiths around the world to come and see for themselves. The apparitions continued to frequently appear until May 1971.

Coptic Christian Joseph Nazir lives in the Sinai and was baptized in Zeitoun Church. He says today, the church plays an important function in Egyptian society. It has formed a charitable connection with a hospital in the city where patients need to pay only a small fraction of what’s charged at other hospitals. Because of this philanthropic healthcare, both Christians and Muslims are again drawn here, similar to the years of the apparition.

Mokattam Mountain Churches

On the top of Mokattam Mountain in Cairo, at Simon the Tanner Monastery, you will find the most unique churches not only in Egypt but in all of the world.

Here, carved into the mountain, are a collection of six churches. Inside each, artistic engravings are chiseled into the stone commemorating their stories.

These churches are important for two.…

Savana, Queen of the Desert

by Kate Wickers January 14, 2025
written by Kate Wickers

It is that beguiling hour betwixt day and night, when the sky is fast transforming from tangerine to mauve and buriti trees are stark in silhouette, as we set out in search of a female maned wolf named Savana — not actually a wolf at all but the largest member of the South American Canidae family, which includes dogs and foxes. She’s an alpha female with responsibilities (three hungry puppies lie hidden in her den) and at sunset she begins her hunt for small mammals such as cavy, a common rodent like a guinea pig. I’m deep within Brazil’s Cerrado desert, which covers two million square kilometers (772,000 square miles, or 21 percent of Brazil). This is the country’s second largest biome, after the Amazon.

My first ever sighting of a maned wolf was on television, in the episode on “Deserts & Grasslands” of the BBC’s award-winning series, Planet Earth III. In this, they filmed Nhorinha (Savana’s mother), and her various packs of pups, over a period of three years, fighting for survival within the Cerrado’s fragile eco-system, devastated by soy production.

Although National Geographic Traveller recently listed the Cerrado in their top destinations for 2025, it remains a road less traveled (located 207 miles, to be exact, over wide-open spaces from the capital Brasilia). The last 90 minutes of this journey is a boneshaker across sandy, pot-holed roads and smaller tracks.

Sustainable Comfort

My base for exploring is where the BBC film crew stayed: Pousada Trijuncao, a seven-room eco-lodge set in 33,000 protected hectares (82,000 acres), which sits at the border point of the Bahia, Goias, and Minas Gerais states. An understated luxury is achieved with a rustic-chic design of wood and thatch, in keeping with the environment, but it’s the wildlife that provide the finishing details — such as the toco toucan, with magnificent jet-black plumage and shiny yellow beak, that I spot sitting in a cashew tree, and ‘Hannah’, the rotund, resident labyrinth pepper frog, that lives in the lily pond by the restaurant.

Most small group activities, including tracking the near-endangered maned wolf, take place at the beginning and end of the day, and are led by a biologist or conservationist from NGO Oncafari, who combine ecotourism with scientific study, wildlife preservation, and conservation work. Our guide, Chiara Bortoloto, expertly adjusts an antenna, which she’s holding aloft from the safari vehicle, primed for picking up Savana’s signal. (The wolf is radio collared for her own protection.) Picking up a faint beep, Chiara gives us a thumbs up. “She’s nearby, and if we’re lucky she’ll cross the road up ahead on her way to her favorite hunting ground,” she says, pointing to a wide-open field, once used for soy production but now left fallow. “Be on the lookout for termite mounds because maned wolves like to do their business on top so that their scent can be spread further over their territory.”

To tread in the footsteps of the great British naturalist Sir David Attenborough, narrator of the Planet Earth series, I must be patient. The Cerrado is home to over 200 species of mammals, 180 species of reptiles, 90 million species of insects, and 11,000 plant species (often endangered), but a safari here is an exercise in slow travel. Sightings of mammals are sporadic but rapidly increasing thanks to more than 90 percent of Trijuncao’s territory being preserved. This includes ….

Sauntering through the vineyards

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine January 8, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

The sky was still mostly blue when a few cheeky raindrops hit the leaves of the grapevine arbor high in the hills above the Rhine River in southwest Germany.

The arbor covered two wooden benches where my friends and I were sampling a 2023 Spätburgunder rosé, also known as pinot noir. The grapevine that kept the rain from our heads was along one of the final stops of a walking wine tasting that began in the marketplatz of the tiny Black Forest town of Gengenbach.

Our guide met us in the impossibly charming town square, pulling a wagon filled with wine bottles and glasses tucked inside fabric pouches for easier carrying.

Remarkable to me because of the vineyard’s proximity to the town center (less than a mile), the stop in Gengenbach was a highlight of a journey along Germany’s Baden Wine Trail.

Tourists have been visiting the Baden Wine Trail since 1924, when it was first established. The Baden wine-growing region runs north to south for about 250 miles along the eastern bank of the Rhine from around Heidelberg to near the Swiss border. Much of it is in the fabled Black Forest, which means visitors also get to enjoy picturesque rural villages, fine hiking trails, and other outdoor pursuits, as well as outstanding food from local producers.

Obviously, you can select specific segments or try to do the whole route. To get there, and get around, you can rent a car, take a train, ride a bicycle, and, of course, rely on your feet for traversing the vineyards or other Black Forest trails.

Town and Countryside

We started the Gengenbach wine tasting with a quick look around the medieval town square, dominated by the 18th-century Town Hall. In December, the building is turned into one of the world’s largest advent calendars, each of 24 windows lighting up sequentially on the nights leading to Christmas. The cobbled streets are filled with half-timbered houses, shops, art galleries, and restaurants. Even during a summer excursion, you feel as if you’re walking through a fairy tale.

Then, it was time to head into the hills … with some wine to lubricate the walk. The river, the views, the vineyards, and church steeples towering over it all make you never want to leave.

That feeling was a bit of a recurring theme on this wine tour through the Black Forest region. Famous for its fairy tales and cuckoo clocks, the Black Forest is a place name familiar to many Americans. But the number of Americans who visit the Black Forest is small compared with the number of visitors from elsewhere. In 2022, the Black Forest saw just 120,000 visitors from the U.S. compared with 21.5 million visitors overall. Paradoxically, it’s both very well-known and under the radar.

My trip along the Baden Wine Trail started in another small town in the Black Forest, Oberkirch, easily accessible via train from Frankfurt Airport. A delightful, family-run 52-room hotel was our home base, Hotel-Gasthof Rose. Its restaurant serves an included breakfast each morning as well as.…

Serendipity in the Seychelles

by Steve Leland January 7, 2025
written by Steve Leland

As we stepped onto the sandy shores of Curieuse Island, we were greeted by a congregation of Giant Tortoises, each weighing around 500 pounds. Armed only with our camera phones, we captured these ancient creatures, targets for our social media feeds. The Seychelles is home to over 100,000 of these remarkable reptiles, sharing their space with about 120,000 residents across the 115 islands of the archipelago.

On our first day of a seven-night cruise aboard Variety Cruises’ Pegasos, we find ourselves exploring tortoise habitats and hiking through red mangroves in search of vibrant crabs and skinks, all before enjoying a BBQ lunch on a secluded beach. It’s a far cry from the ordinary, and this adventure begins just 24 hours after our seamless embarkation in Victoria, the capital of Mahé.

The Greek captain, exuding warmth and humor, forgoes the usual champagne welcome for a refreshing ice cream bar during the safety briefing. This informal touch hints that our island getaway will be anything but typical.

Dinner on our first night exceeds expectations. Two cheerful Indonesian waiters serve up massive baked Job fish alongside roasted lamb, garlic mussels, sautéed octopus, Greek salad, and inventive vegetarian dishes.

The Pegasos, accommodating 40 passengers, has been navigating the pristine waters of the Seychelles for over 12 years. Offering three-, four-, and seven-night itineraries, it provides a unique opportunity to explore diverse islands and their endemic wildlife, pristine beaches, and vibrant cultural experiences. The spacious staterooms feature scenic views, while the contemporary salon and dining area create a relaxed atmosphere for small-ship cruising.

Birdwatching and Snorkeling Adventures
On Day 2, the morning unfolds with breathtaking birdwatching as the Pegasos anchors off Cousin Island, a sanctuary for nesting seabirds. Home to various species, including the Seychelles warbler and the Greater frigate bird, it’s a paradise for bird enthusiasts.

In the afternoon, we dive below the surface for a snorkeling adventure in crystal-clear waters, showcasing the vibrant marine life. Each day offers a mix of guided hikes and beach relaxation on the soft sands of the Indian Ocean.

Life Aboard the Pegasos

Red Snapper | Steve Leland

Afternoons on the Pegasos are filled with cocktail classes, wine tastings, towel folding lessons, and presentations about upcoming destinations. The talented chef consistently impresses with meals featuring regional specialties, creole dishes, and fresh seafood. One evening, we enjoy alfresco dining under the stars with a standout dish: an oven-baked whole red snapper, expertly presented by our waitstaff. Local entertainers then showcase cultural music and dance.

Exploring Praslin and La Digue
No excursion captures the imagination quite like a visit to Vallée de Mai on Praslin, the Seychelles’ second-largest island. This UNESCO World Heritage Site showcases the distinctive Coco-de-mer palms, which can grow up to 120 feet tall and produce the world’s largest nut. Unlike previous stops, the Pegasos docks directly in Praslin, allowing guests to explore the charming village.

La Digue’s Anse Source D’Argent is often cited as one of the best beaches in the Seychelles. Framed by enormous granite boulders and lush greenery, its shallow waters invite snorkeling amidst vibrant marine life.

On our final day, the Pegasos anchor off Morrissey Island. A hike along an elevated trail reveals stunning views of twelve neighboring islands. For those seeking a glimpse of castaway life, hidden trails lead to secluded, exotic beaches.

Variety Cruises operates a fleet of eight small vessels worldwide, embracing the motto that “it’s a better world at sea.” With explorations in destinations like French Polynesia, the Greek Islands, and the Seychelles, this journey proves not only different but truly exceptional.

Sober Seas

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine January 7, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

When Darci Murray entered her cabin on an Explora Journeys cruise in the Caribbean, nonalcoholic champagne awaited her. “We felt like everybody else,” said Murray, a travel advisor and owner of Hooked, an alcohol-free group travel company.

Many folks have an iconic cruising image of sitting by the pool, umbrella drink in hand. But what if you, like Murray, don’t drink alcohol at all? Or if you’re participating in Dry January, or detoxing in any other month? Should you really walk up that gangplank and set sail?

Cruising is absolutely a good option for nondrinkers. But you should pick your ship, destination, and activities thoughtfully. Here are some ideas from experts, and from my own experience as a long-time sober traveler.

How should I pick my non-party cruise?

Start by doing some research in online forums. Is everybody raving about what fun they had partying until four in the morning? Or do they talk about the ship’s relaxed vibe?

Ship size can be an important consideration. Big ships are known for prepaid drink packages, which might lead to intoxicated shipmates. But they also have more room to get away and find your own space.

Nondrinker Eric Lucas enjoys the personal attention of ships with 100 or fewer passengers. “I have been on small ships a half-dozen times,” he says. “Each time, I’ve just told the dining staff that I’m allergic to alcohol and the message gets passed to all. This has translated to good mocktails, too.”

When booking your cruise, look for a place on your reservation form to indicate that you’re a nondrinker. Type it into the notes if there isn’t an explicit box to check. This is how cruise lines know to welcome nondrinkers with an alcohol-free libation rather than a bottle of booze.  Explora Journeys has a program called “Club Soda” with meet-ups, mocktail mixology classes, and a subtle pin that passengers can wear around….
