Oceania Cruises Welcomes Jacques on Allura

by Julie Bouchner January 21, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

Oceania Cruises will introduce its French restaurant, Jacques, aboard Allura, which launches in mid-July. Named after celebrated chef Jacques Pépin, Jacques has won the hearts of guests on Marina and Riviera. It will also debut on Vista, Allura’s sister ship, in October 2025, joining other popular dining options like Polo Grill, Toscana, and Red Ginger.

Frank A. Del Rio, President of Oceania Cruises, said: “Jacques is our culinary patriarch, having been a member of the culinary team since day one. His creativity and expertise form the very heart of our philosophy, The Finest Cuisine at Sea, which drives everything we do. Bringing this fabulous restaurant to Allura as she launches this summer, and to Vista later in the year, means the world to me, and the entire Oceania Cruises family.”

Executive Culinary Directors Alexis Quaretti and Eric Barale will work closely with Chef Pépin to refresh the Jacques menu by introducing new flavors while maintaining the beloved dishes from Marina.

“It is wonderful to bring Jacques to our two newest ships, and I am thrilled to be working alongside the man himself to create this latest version of our signature French restaurant,” said Chef Quaretti. “When considering this new generation of Jacques, it was very important for me to introduce recipes from personal childhood memories and to share my vision of French family food as well as honoring the classic French bistro experience.”

Alongside the most loved dishes from Marina and Riviera, the menu will feature new highlights, including duck with Grand Marnier-infused orange sauce, veal medallions in morel sauce, and a range of vegetarian options. For dessert lovers, classic treats such as Crêpes Suzette and profiteroles will be available on the dessert trolley.

Chef Pépin commented: “I am so excited to be writing the next chapter of Jacques with my friends and colleagues, Chefs Alexis Quaretti and Eric Barale. This is the perfect opportunity to experiment with some delicious new dishes and to explore unique ways to serve some of the classics that our guests have come to know and love. We have lots of exciting plans for this latest iteration of Jacques. I cannot wait to share them.”

Guests can also look forward to a more interactive dining experience at Jacques, featuring tableside service for new dishes like beef tartare. Enhanced decor, including thoughtfully selected crockery, glassware, and silverware, will emphasize “l’art de la table” and enrich the authentic Parisian bistro atmosphere.

Del Rio commented: “Our beautiful new ship, Allura, represents Oceania Cruises’ dazzling future but also honors our history. The addition of Jacques to her and her sister, Vista, is a wonderful tangible example of this – celebrating our heritage, our heartfelt passion for food, while always looking ahead to what’s on the horizon.”

Rottnest Island, Western Australia

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine January 17, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

“Help!” I called.

I was seated on the edge of a raised patio, eating a sandwich, when suddenly a furry creature the size of a large house cat climbed onto my lap. The animal sat on his hind legs, his delicate finger-like digits on my chest. He was trying to reach my sandwich, which I was holding up in the air.

Of course, I was in no danger. After all, I was on idyllic Rottnest Island, known by  the indigenous Nyoongar people as Wadjemup, in the state of Western Australia. And the unfamiliar creature? A quokka (pronounced “kwaakuh”), a diminutive, wallaby-like creature. The sensation of having a wild animal on my lap was unnerving, but I was pretty certain quokkas were harmless. Still, I’d heard they could bite. What had me more worried was the possibility that the quokka would snatch my food and eat it. This would be bad. Not for me, but for the quokka.

A Little Too Tame

On the 30-minute ferry over from Fremantle, a suburb of Perth, staff had alerted passengers not to stress the quokkas. They might come to us, but we should aim to keep a distance of at least 6 feet. No touching or feeding the gentle creatures. Human food could make them ill, they warned. Signs around the historic settlement at Wadjemup/Rottnest emphasized this same message.

Ultimately, another tourist did come over to “rescue” me by hiding my sandwich in my backpack. Eventually, the quokka grew bored and moved on.

But I felt heartsick for the endearing, inquisitive animals. While quokkas are nocturnal by nature, they have adapted their behavior around humans in hopes of snagging easy meals. The furballs were all over the main square of the settlement: hopping on and off raised patios, sitting at people’s feet hoping for handouts, “posing” with delighted visitors for the ubiquitous #quokkaselfie, and getting into scuffles with their four-legged compatriots over human attention — read: food.

On Wadjemup/Rottnest, where the quokka population ranges between 8,000 and 10,000, the species is not endangered. Still, it remains vital to follow the rules. Off the island, the beloved species is listed as vulnerable. Where once the species was widespread on the mainland of the state of Western Australia, today, due to development, wildfires and habitat fragmentation, there exist only a few known pockets living in the southwestern part of the state.

Luckily for the quokkas, they have a guardian angel: the Rottnest Island Authority. Arvid Hogstrom, Director of Environment, Heritage and Park Services for the RIA, says, “We certainly don’t encourage [quokkas climbing on people]. We encourage people to slowly try and nudge the animal away. Because they can bite. And it’s not natural behavior. They’re herbivores; giving them a custard tart or a meat pie is not their natural food. And can do them damage.”

Rangers on Wadjemup/Rottnest Island spend a lot of time doing public education and talking to visitors. “I think over the past couple of months, they’ve had probably 400 or 500 interactions with people who are doing the wrong thing,” says Hogstrom.

Owing to their vulnerable status, “The quokka population on Rottnest is really important,” Hogstrom says. “It’s the last stronghold for the species.”

Among numerous other responsibilities, Hogstrom’s team is committed to.…

Royal Caribbean’s Artist Discovery Program Returns on Star of the Seas

by Julie Bouchner January 16, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

Royal Caribbean is reviving its Artist Discovery Program to connect with the Caribbean’s culture and beauty!

The program will debut on Star of the Seas in August 2025 in Port Canaveral, Florida, and will feature a platform for emerging artists to share their work with travelers. Artists from the region can submit their work from today until February 15th to participate in this program. The selected artists will join a collection of local artists, including those who showcased their work on the Icon of the Seas. They will be featured in Star’s art collection, highlighting the destinations that make Royal Caribbean vacations special.

“We are excited for this next edition of The Artist Discovery Program and can’t wait to be awestruck by visionary artists across the Caribbean. Last year, our first-ever call to artists received an overwhelming response with more than 140 artists across 25 Caribbean countries submitting pieces that told a unique story and captured the allure of the region,” said Jay Schneider, chief product innovation officer, Royal Caribbean International. “Our goal is to connect our guests to the enduring beauty and creativity of the Caribbean, and this immersive program is a pathway to celebrating and exploring local culture while onboard the next Icon of vacations – Star of the Seas.”

MORE ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Artist Discovery Program’s next group of artists will create large-scale murals in four key locations on the Star of the Seas: the Royal Promenade, the embarkation area, the Suite Sundeck Lobby, and the Suite Sundeck. These murals will highlight the vibrancy of the Caribbean and join a collection of works by local artists inspired by the region.

Each selected artist will receive a grant from $20,000 to over $100,000 to realize their vision. As artists in residence, they will collaborate with Royal Caribbean’s team later this year in Turku, Finland, where the ship is under construction.

Artists interested in the program must submit:

Five samples of original works.
A brief artist statement explaining their work and inspiration.
A copy of their CV or resume.

This year’s chosen artists will build on the success of the 2023 cohort, who created murals featured throughout Icon of the Seas. These include Angelika Wallace-Whitfield from the Bahamas, Philippe Dodard from Haiti, and Jason Hospedales from Trinidad and Tobago.

STAR OF THE SEAS ITINERARIES

Star of the Seas will offer year-round, 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises from Port Canaveral, with stops at Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, as well as Cozumel, Mexico; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; and Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis. More information about Star is available on Royal Caribbean’s website.

Future editions of the Artist Discovery Program will be announced later. Additional details can be found here.

Step Inside Sanctuary

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine January 15, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Cairo is an electrifying place. Loud, chaotic and very crowded, this Middle Eastern megalopolis is fascinating, yet it also can be overwhelming in large doses. It has another side too, though. A quiet and peaceful side. Step inside one of Cairo’s churches, and you will find yourself immersed in hushed tranquility. The churches of Cairo are not only calm amid the commotion. They are also very important parts of the country’s Christian culture and history.

“Being a Christian in Egypt is an experience of rich heritage and deep-rooted faith,” Egyptian student Haitham Gendy explains. “The churches here are not just buildings; they are sanctuaries of history, culture, and unwavering belief. They tell the stories of generations who have kept the flame of their faith burning brightly despite challenges.”

When travelers want to see the churches here, they usually head to the famous Coptic Cairo. However, you can find many other lesser-known but just as remarkable churches dotted all around the city. While these holy places are beloved to Coptic Christians, they are unknown to most travelers.

Church of  the Virgin Mary at Zeitoun

Usually called simply “Zeitoun Church,” this beautiful, brightly colored building is probably the Coptic Christian community’s most important church. For over three years beginning on April 2, 1968, witnesses began seeing an apparition of the Virgin Mary on its roof. Millions of Egyptians eventually witnessed this, but many were, of course, skeptical. High-ranking Egyptian bishops and priests soon undertook an investigation. They ultimately determined this was no hoax and the apparitions were indeed truly supernatural. This caused millions of people from different faiths around the world to come and see for themselves. The apparitions continued to frequently appear until May 1971.

Coptic Christian Joseph Nazir lives in the Sinai and was baptized in Zeitoun Church. He says today, the church plays an important function in Egyptian society. It has formed a charitable connection with a hospital in the city where patients need to pay only a small fraction of what’s charged at other hospitals. Because of this philanthropic healthcare, both Christians and Muslims are again drawn here, similar to the years of the apparition.

Mokattam Mountain Churches

On the top of Mokattam Mountain in Cairo, at Simon the Tanner Monastery, you will find the most unique churches not only in Egypt but in all of the world.

Here, carved into the mountain, are a collection of six churches. Inside each, artistic engravings are chiseled into the stone commemorating their stories.

These churches are important for two.…
