Farms, Falls, and Forests

by Elizabeth Martinez March 14, 2025
written by Elizabeth Martinez

A road trip through the small towns of the Catskill Mountains is like stepping into a postcard, where every turn unveils rolling hills, serene rivers, and storybook villages. Whether you’re looking for the perfect waterfall, the most unique art gallery, the coziest working farm, or even the most delicious locally made hard cider, each stop will tell a tale of rich history, artistic spirit, and the kind of warm hospitality that makes you want to linger just a little longer.

Roughly one hundred miles north of New York City, the Catskills — actually a part of the Appalachian Mountain range — are filled with hamlets that offer a blend of adventure, culture, and tranquility wrapped up in an authentic, off-the-beaten-path experience. But, instead of the Big Apple, start your rural road adventure in Albany, the state’s capital. Filled with history, culture, and urban charm — and an international airport — Albany’s Capitol building and its stately and stunning “million-dollar staircase” is worth a visit. The New York State Museum, the oldest and largest of its kind, is also begging to be explored. But no trip to Albany is complete without a visit to the Egg. The fun architectural icon — a domed, concrete egg — is a magnificent performing arts center boasting music, art, theater, comedy, dance, and family entertainment year-round.

Head west from Albany for a country caper surrounded by a landscape that seamlessly blends natural beauty with the timeless charm of its small towns and dozens of hidden gems.

Eat and Drink in Jefferson

With no traffic lights and just one main T-junction that boasts the gas station/convenience store/liquor store, Jefferson is about as small-town America as it gets. For food and frolic, make the historic Heartbreak Hotel your first stop. Serving lunch and dinner, it is no longer a hotel but has a storied history dating back to the late 1800s. For a slightly fancier meal, head down the street to the Mill Pond Inn and Tavern, a renovated farmhouse serving casual but upscale food and bespoke cocktails. Boasting a few charming rooms, it’s also a good spot for an intimate wedding or special celebration. After dinner, make a stop at the adorable 2 Scoops Ice Cream shop for a sweet treat. If you are visiting on the weekend, do not miss Buck Hill Farm for a homestyle breakfast fit for royalty and be sure to buy some of the made-on-property products including maple syrup, fudge, and more. Another favorite weekend stop includes Rev Spirits, a meadery with the most charming outdoor outpost offering rich, artfully crafted alcoholic spirits made with raw, local honey.

Shop and Sustenance in Sharon Springs

In the mid-19th century, Sharon Springs was a popular leisure destination for the wealthy who sought out the curative properties of the town’s sulfur, magnesia, and iron-rich waters. Today, you can visit some of the historic bathhouses that flourished in the town’s heyday. The town is rumored to have been the inspiration for the popular series Schitt’s Creek. Similar to the Rose Apothecary is the well-known Beekman 1802 Kindness Shop, a must-shop for the perfectly curated collection of locally inspired items including the store’s own line of cruelty-free goat-milk skincare. Find more quality products next door at Cobbler & Company, a unique two-story gift shop featuring not just skincare but fashion and home accessories, toys, and more. Housed in a historic building that once served as a cobbler’s shop, the store — and all the shops on that historic Main Street — are worthy of a visit. Further indulge in the restorative properties of the town’s resources of a different kind by visiting any of the eateries including Brimstone Bakery for baked and gluten-free goods, the Fancy Farmer for bar food and more, and the Black Cat Café & Bakery for coffee, small dishes, and books.

Music, Museums, and Mines in Gilboa

Known for its scenic countryside, the tiny town of Gilboa boasts the area’s most charming live music venue. Fairy lights, communal wood tables, and the tastiest local hard cider make for a great day or evening at Rockland Cider Works. To support live music and visits year-round, Rockland recently opened a new.…

Rosé Year-Round

by Lola Méndez March 11, 2025
written by Lola Méndez

When I arrive in Narbonne, it’s dusk. The seafront enclave in the South of France enjoys 285 sunny days a year, and early September is no exception. It’s barely sweater weather, but the sea-borne breeze makes it the perfect temperature for my French linen suit.

Seated at an ocean-front table at Mamamouchi, a local institution known for its bohemian beach-brasserie vibes, I order freshly caught oysters, mussels, and a side of French fries. When I asked the waiter which would go well with the meal, he suggested the restaurant’s most popular wine, Gris Blanc from Gérard Bertrand.

Summer is ending, and I’ve never considered drinking rosé outside of the months of peak heat during the year. I don’t want to offend the server and am confident his wine knowledge far exceeds mine, so I confirm I’d like to order the wine he suggests. Of course, it was excellent and paired perfectly with the saltiness of my meal.

THINK PINK

It turns out that the French buy more rosé than red wine. “In France, rosé isn’t just a seasonal wine—it’s a way of life. Rosé holds a unique place in the wine world, embodying elegance, warmth, and a deep connection to the Mediterranean way of life,” Bertrand says. “Drinking rosé is a tradition passed on from generation to generation. Growing up in the South of France, rosé was always a staple at our table.”

I’m dining with Marriane Fabre-Lanvin, the co-founder of the women-owned, vegan, organic Souleil Wines. She’s French and is puzzled by my confusion at the suggestion of drinking rosé in the fall. For her, it’s entirely natural, as she grew up in France, and her family has always enjoyed rosé throughout the year. Thus begins my journey into learning that the French consider rosé an all-season wine.

I blame my ignorance on the rampant misconception in the United States that rosé is a non-serious wine primarily consumed by young women poolside or at the beach. This idea that rosé is overly sweet, fruity, and feminine was drilled into our minds through Instagram-centric rosé brands that fueled the trope, such as Yes Way Rosé, White Girl Rosé, and Babe rosé in a can.

The French are the first to tell you this is all wrong. After all, some of the most famous French rosé wines are from Gérard Bertrand, a former professional Rugby player. Let’s stop gendering wine.

SERIOUS BUSINESS

Gérard Bertrand is the most prominent French producer in the U.S. market, shipping around 600,000 cases annually. “Rosé can be as complex as white, red, or orange wine. I’m proud to see it becoming a year-round staple for wine lovers everywhere,” says Bertrand. “Rosé should be recognized as a serious, year-round wine.”

The next day, I visited the Gérard Bertrand biodynamic and organic winery in Narbonne and was astonished to.…

Heavens Above

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine March 10, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

One version of me stands in the bitter cold of Interior Alaska, bundled in layers of wool and puffy insulation, breath swirling around me in a cloud as I stare up at a sky that boils with swirls of aurora in green, pink, purple, and red.

Another version of me lounges in a hammock on the deck of my favorite cruise ship. I’ve brought a book with me, and as I turn the page, I lift my head to gaze at the flat line of water against the horizon. Surely it goes on forever?

I used to think those two versions couldn’t coexist. And yet there is another option, one of the best-kept secrets in cruising: that sometimes, when conditions are just right and Lady Luck is firmly on your side, you can see the northern lights from the deck of a normal cruise ship. No Arctic expedition required.

Of course, there are a few catches.

Stacking the deck

When you’re lucky with this sort of thing, you’re really lucky. “Peak summer in Alaska typically isn’t dark enough for a display, but last season was spectacular thanks to heightened solar activity,” says Kelly Sutter, senior expedition leader with UnCruise Adventures.

That’s because we’re at the apex of the 11-year cycle of solar energy that, ultimately, causes the northern lights. Good luck already. But when you’re trawling for northern lights, only a few variables are truly within your control.

The first is location. The northern lights have been visible from the tropics at least once in recorded history: as part of the 1859 Carrington Event, the most intense geomagnetic storm ever recorded, which hit Earth with such intensity that telegraphs went haywire, sparking their operators and even starting fires. The resulting display of aurora borealis was seen as far south as Cuba and Hawaii while its southern sibling, the aurora australis, was visible much farther north than usual, too.

But in everyday terms, you’re only going to see the northern lights when sailing waters near countries like Iceland, Greenland, and Norway, or my home stomping grounds of Alaska.

And, as Sutter mentioned, nighttime skies have to be dark for you to see the aurora; otherwise, you might as well be hunting for a flashlight beam in a well-lit room. Here in the northern hemisphere, that usually translates to September to April.

Lastly, you’ll need to pray for clear skies. If whatever deity you’ve addressed is kind enough to sweep the clouds away, just one obstacle remains: the aurora itself, which is about as predictable in its appearances as a cat deciding whether it really wants to go outside or not.

Giddyap, space cowboy

That’s not the aurora’s fault. If you were the equivalent of a neon space tumbleweed, blowing in on the whims of space weather, you’d be a little inconsistent too.

That’s because the aurora is caused by solar wind — streams of particles that are energized enough to escape the sun, which eventually collide with oxygen and nitrogen in our upper atmosphere. The particles’ charged energy is released as the brilliant green, red, pink, and purple streamers and sheets of the northern lights — pretty much the same principle as what happens inside the tubes of a neon light when you flip the electrical switch to “on.”

The more energy that’s released from the sun, the brighter the aurora we get. But forecasting space weather is even more difficult than forecasting terrestrial weather.

So unless you want to cross your fingers and purchase a last-minute berth when you hear that a powerful geomagnetic storm is heading our way, all you can do is choose a few sailing dates and cross your fingers. You’ve rolled the dice, and now it’s up to Lady Luck.

The dark of night

The good news is that, as long as you’re not sailing under the midnight sun, there is no darkness quite like that of a ship at sea — and few vantage points quite so expansive.

“[A] great thing about viewing the aurora on a ship is that guests’ views will be unobstructed: while at sea, there are no buildings — or even natural formations like mountains — that will block views at sea,” explains Robert DeBruin, formerly a deck and safety officer for Holland America Line, now their director of deployment and itinerary planning. “And, guests can avoid the bulk of light pollution they may….

Sailaway Sights: Seattle

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine March 7, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Gangways have retracted, ropes cast off and the propellers now churn. You’re on deck to fully enjoy sailaway, but what can be seen on shore as you glide from the docks?

Sitting pretty on Puget Sound, Seattle has a wealth of shoreside sights, many of which are not immediately obvious but nonetheless contain centuries of stories or fascinating facts. Here’s the highlights.

An Urban Rearview

If your cruise departs from downtown Bell Street Cruise Terminal (aka Pier 66), you’ll immediately get a view of famous Pike Place Market. A little way along is award-winning Olympic Sculpture Park. Look closely and you can see artworks such as Alexander Calder’s vast red Eagle. Much harder to miss is the Pier 86 Grain Terminal, where dozens of 160-foot-high silos store grain carried by train from across the continent.

We’re now at Smith Cove Cruise Terminal (aka Pier 91) from where your cruise may depart and where Seattle first started shipping grain 100 years ago. Look beyond the piers to the grand Queen Anne neighborhood, one of the city’s most salubrious areas and home to fictional psychologist Frasier Crane. You can’t miss the Space Needle, built for the 1962 World’s Fair. Those elevators you can see are traveling at just over 9 mph.

Leafy Queen Anne blends with equally verdant (and affluent) Magnolia, home to 534-acre Discovery Park, where visitors enjoy nature trails and sweeping vistas (you’ll know you’re sailing past the park when you spot the tree-topped bluffs). At the park’s tip you’ll pass the squat white West Point Lighthouse which began shining its powerful light — reaching 18 miles over the water — in 1881.

Ferries and Farther

So far, we’ve focused on all the action on the starboard side, but there are also sights to be seen to port. Cast your eyes in that direction as you sail beside Discovery Park and you’ll be looking at Bainbridge Island, linked to Seattle by white-hulled Washington State Ferries. Bainbridge Island is Suquamish land and the ferries land at the point where this tribe once had a village called Eagle Harbor. In 1792, at the southern end of the island, Captain Vancouver anchored his ship while surveying Puget Sound. Towards the island’s north are the formal gardens and ornamental trees of Bloedel Reserve.

On a clear day you can’t miss the Olympic Mountains in the distance behind Bainbridge Island. Mount Olympus is, at 7,980 feet, the range’s tallest. The mountains are within  Olympic National Park where an average 12 feet of rain falls annually — one of the rainiest places in the lower 48. Off the ship’s stern is another snowy peak: Mount Rainier. Although it’s about 60 miles away, this volcano rises 14,410 feet above sea level, so it’s clearly visible if the weather is favorable.

Back to starboard and we’ve now rounded Discovery Park to see the entrance of a waterway. This is the Lake Washington Ship Canal, connecting ocean to lake. The Army Corps of Engineers completed the canal in 1917 and still operates Ballard Locks — among the busiest in the US — today. This waterway is home to the North Pacific fishing fleet’s 400 ships. Stars of.…

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises completes semi-circumnavigation of Antarctica

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine March 6, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises is celebrating a maritime milestone with a voyage going halfway around the icy continent of Antarctica.

The ultra-modern expedition ship HANSEATIC inspiration began its semi-circumnavigation on January 28, departing from Ushuaia, Argentina, and arrived at Christchurch, New Zealand, on March 2, following the historic routes of legendary polar explorers and encountering rare wildlife in exceptional weather.

An unusually calm crossing of the Drake Passage took HANSEATIC inspiration to the South Shetland Islands, the Antarctic Peninsula, Peter the First Island, and the Ross Sea, where guests spotted emperor penguins.  Other highlights included a landing at Cape Bird near Mount Erebus, and a visit to explorer Ernest Shackleton’s hut on his birthday.

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has announced their next semi-circumnavigation will take place from February 1 to March 5, 2027, aboard HANSEATIC spirit, the sister ship to HANSEATIC inspiration, sailing from Ushuaia to Christchurch.

Quirks and Quacks and Unbeaten Tracks

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine March 6, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

“I can’t believe I have to drive through Canada to get to here,” I mused while waiting at the Point Roberts–Boundary Bay border crossing. My quest to find the quirky Rubber Duck Museum was sure to be a unique adventure. The geopolitical anomaly that is tiny Point Roberts, Washington, is only accessible by land through British Columbia. It is a “pene-enclave” which is reached by crossing through another country to get to it. Rubber ducks are worth the challenge.

This little hamlet is delightfully unhurried, and peaceful. It is a charming, seaside community with old-growth forests, lovely beaches, and no hotels. There is a serenity I felt the moment I crossed the border. “It’s called the ‘Point Roberts sigh,’” says Jessica McVey, Treasurer, Point Roberts Historical Society. She describes it as the sense of relaxation residents feel returning home.

Point Roberts is approximately 5 square miles and easy to navigate via either the Point Roberts Scenic Trail or the History Trail. I combined the two during my visit to see all the highlights of the point.

Point Roberts History Center

Make this the first stop to pick up maps of Point Roberts and the History Trail. You’ll find it in the town community center. Take time to look over the two interpretive signs that are part of the History Trail. The History Center’s hours are limited, but it is worth a visit, if open, to see the exhibits illuminating the history of the area with artifacts and artwork. A highlight for me was the local houses commemorated in fabric by local artist Judy Ross. There are lots of photos, media clippings, and artifacts. It also has a cute gift shop.

Quack-tastic Fun At The Rubber Duck Museum

“Point Roberts struggled during the pandemic, and we wanted to establish an attraction that would draw people to the area,” says Neil King, owner and co-founder of this unusual attraction along with his wife Krystal King. The two wanted something that would fit in the footprint of their shop, Kora’s Corner.

One day Krystal said, “What about rubber ducks?” The first inventory item they purchased for Kora’s Corner was a rubber duck. The two thought rubber ducks were a symbol of positivity and happiness.

Surprisingly according to Neil, rubber ducks became super popular again as the pandemic hit. “We believe it has to do with the nostalgic innocence and happiness that everyone reaches for when times are tough,” he says.

The self-proclaimed “World’s First and Only Historical Rubber Duck Museum” had its grand opening on July 4, 2024. Since then, it has drawn visitors from all over the world and is featured in Roadside America. Highlights of the collection include an antique felt mallard duck from 1911, rubber ducks used by Ernie on Sesame Street, and an original Donald Duck toy from the 1930s.

The historic ducks are displayed among more than 2,000 ducks for sale. If you aren’t a rubber duck aficionado when you arrive, you will be when you leave. It’s fun and endearing. I easily spent over an hour chatting with Neil, who is a font of knowledge about rubber ducks. I discovered so many ducks … like the oddball banana duck, and a Glinda duck from The Wizard of Oz. For cruisers who love to hide ducks on cruise ships, you’re likely to find truly unique ones.

Exploring the Four Corner Parks of Point Roberts

Each corner of Point Roberts has a Whatcom County Park with unique features. I visited all four and so should you.

Monument Park: The highlight is the Boundary Marker #1 placed at this site in 1861. The obelisk was crafted in Scotland and is the first marker on the U.S.-Canadian border — the longest undefended border in the world. I enjoyed ….
