Drew Barrymore: Newest MSC Godmother

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine March 5, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

MSC Cruises has named actress and television host Drew Barrymore as the godmother of its new U.S. flagship, MSC World America. Barrymore will officially name the ship during a ceremony on April 9 at the MSC Miami Cruise Terminal, which will be the world’s largest.

“When MSC Cruises asked me to be the godmother of MSC World America, I immediately said yes,” Barrymore said. “I love to travel—it fuels my soul—and being part of something that helps people set off on incredible adventures is amazing. Cruises let you discover the world in such a fun, unexpected way. It’s an honor to send MSC World America off with well wishes.”

A member of the Barrymore acting dynasty, Barrymore has received a Golden Globe Award and multiple Emmy and BAFTA nominations. In addition to her acting career, she launched The Drew Barrymore Show in 2020, followed by Drew Magazine, and co-authored a New York Times bestselling cookbook. She was named one of Time’s 100 most influential people in 2023. At the naming ceremony, Barrymore will be cutting the ribbon and triggering the traditional breaking of a bottle of champagne on the ship’s bow alongside Orlando Bloom, who co-stars with her in the company’s “Let’s Holiday” campaign that debuted during the Big Game.

Suzanne Salas, executive vice president of marketing, eCommerce, and sales for MSC Cruises USA, said the event holds deep significance for the company. “As a family business with over 300 years of seafaring heritage, these ceremonies are important maritime traditions,” she said. “Drew is the perfect godmother for MSC World America, embodying the elegance, passion, and spirit of adventure that define our brand.”

Following the ceremony, MSC World America will embark on a three-night sailing to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, the company’s private island in The Bahamas.

While at Ocean Cay, the MSC Foundation will inaugurate its new Marine Conservation Center, a research facility supporting coral restoration efforts. Scientists, students, and guests will engage with the Foundation’s Super Coral Program, which aims to rehabilitate reefs affected by climate change.

MSC World America will sail from Miami year-round, with all itineraries including a stop at Ocean Cay.

CroisiEurope to Launch Luxury Eco-Tourism Ship on the Amazon in 2027

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine March 4, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Europe’s largest river cruise operator, CroisiEurope, has unveiled plans to debut a new luxury ship on the Amazon in early 2027. The vessel is the company’s first newbuild since 2020 and its first to operate in South America. Its aim is to provide an environmentally friendly tourism experience.

The unnamed, five-anchor ship will accommodate 32 guests across four decks, spanning 49 meters (161 feet) in length and 15 meters (50 feet) in width. Its design incorporates wood, vibrant colors, and  local arts and crafts inspired by Amazonian culture. The 16 suites, all featuring private balconies, include two presidential suites suspended between the sky and water. Additional onboard amenities will include a gourmet restaurant serving Brazilian-inspired cuisine, a spa, fitness room, sun deck, and conference space.

CroisiEurope said the Amazonia 2027 project will integrate the latest environmental technologies, including engines that meet the highest emissions standards, an advanced wastewater treatment system, and solar panels designed to enable the ship to shut down generators overnight for silent, battery-powered operation. The company also emphasized a commitment to sustainable tourism, with guest experiences designed to support local communities through cultural exchanges, biodiversity conservation, and partnerships with Amazonian initiatives.

Based in Manaus, the ship will offer 12-day itineraries along the Amazon, Rio Negro, Solimões, Arapiuns, and Tapajós rivers, extending to the Colombian border. Additional travel extensions will be available, with bookings set to open soon.

Ponant Earns Inaugural Spot on Forbes Travel Guide’s 2025 “Edge List”

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine March 3, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Le Commandant Charcot, the world’s only luxury icebreaker, has been named to the inaugural Forbes Travel Guide “Edge List,” a new distinction highlighting travel experiences that go beyond traditional luxury. The announcement was made last week during the Forbes Travel Guide Summit in Monaco, which gathered over 750 industry professionals to discuss the future of high-end travel.

The 2025 Edge List celebrates exceptional journeys that combine exclusivity, adventure, and purposeful exploration. Le Commandant Charcot shares the honor with NIHI Sumba, an Indonesian resort known for its ultra-exclusive offerings.

Le Commandant Charcot received the award for its sustainable exploration capabilities, which provide unprecedented access to remote regions while emphasizing environmental responsibility. The ship boasts the only Alain Ducasse restaurant at sea, expansive observation decks, a wellness center, and intimate lounges, all complemented by a near 1:1 crew-to-guest ratio. Alain Ducasse himself was also recognized with a Forbes Travel Guide Award of Excellence during the event.

“We are proud to see Le Commandant Charcot honored with this recognition,” said Hervé Gastinel, CEO & Chief Sustainability Officer of Ponant Explorations Group. “This ship was designed to be more than just a vessel — it’s a platform for responsible exploration, bridging luxury with purpose. This award celebrates exclusive, immersive experiences that foster a deeper connection with the world around us.”

Hermann Elger, CEO of Forbes Travel Guide, echoed the sentiment: “Le Commandant Charcot exemplifies luxury without limits, pioneering expedition travel with its electric-hybrid propulsion and unique polar routes. This recognition highlights how companies like Ponant are reshaping the future of adventure travel, blending unparalleled exploration with the highest standards of luxury.”

Le Commandant Charcot is the first expedition vessel designed for high-polar exploration. Its Polar Class-2 hull allows it to navigate through thick ice while minimizing its environmental footprint using hybrid propulsion powered by electricity and liquefied natural gas. The ship also serves as a floating research platform, offering both wet and dry scientific laboratories for researchers studying the polar regions.

On board, guests can enjoy luxurious accommodations and panoramic views of some of the world’s most remote landscapes. Setting new standards in sustainable expedition travel, Le Commandant Charcot grants access to some of the most exclusive destinations on Earth, including the North Pole and Antarctica.

How to Find the Best Cruise Deals

by Porthole Cruise and Travel March 3, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Cruising can offer a memorable vacation experience, but it doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag. Here’s a straightforward guide to finding the best cruise deals.

1. Be Flexible with Travel Dates

Cruise prices vary significantly based on the season. Traveling during off-peak times (typically spring and fall) can yield lower fares. If you can adjust your trip dates, you’ll find better deals.

2. Set Up Alerts and Subscribe to Newsletters

Subscribe to newsletters from cruise lines and travel deal websites. These will notify you of special promotions and last-minute offers.

3. Consider Booking Early or Last Minute

Early Bookings

Cruise lines often provide discounts for early reservations, sometimes with added benefits like cabin upgrades.

Last-Minute Deals

If you’re flexible, last-minute cruises can offer significant savings as cruise lines try to fill unsold cabins.

4. Join Loyalty Programs

Frequent cruisers can benefit from loyalty programs that provide discounts, perks, and notifications of exclusive offers. Signing up is usually free.

5. Use Online Travel Agencies

Search for deals on Expedia or Kayak. Comparing prices across different platforms can help you find the best deal.

6. Consider Group Discounts

Traveling with family or friends can reduce costs. Most cruise lines offer discounts for larger groups, along with additional perks.

7. Work with a Cruise Specialist Travel Agent

Travel agents who specialize in cruises can provide insights and exclusive deals not readily available online. Their expertise can save you money and time.

8. Review Onboard Packages Carefully

Evaluate whether onboard packages (beverage, dining, excursions) align with your plans. Some could offer savings if pre-purchased compared to onboard costs.

9. Follow Cruise Lines on Social Media

Follow your preferred cruise lines on social media for announcements and exclusive promotions that may not be advertised elsewhere.

10. Be Patient and Persistent

Monitor prices regularly. The cruise market can fluctuate, and waiting for price drops can lead to significant savings.

Finding the best cruise deals involves flexibility, research, and strategic planning. Use these tips to score great bargains on your next cruise vacation. Happy sailing!

Cruising Through Challenging Sees

by Theresa Russell February 28, 2025
written by Theresa Russell

We never know what life has in store for us, but certain things can rear their ugly heads to remind us of those things we have taken for granted. Several years ago the loss of most of my vision in one eye threw me for a loop, but I still had one perfectly good eye. Then, perhaps fatigued from having become my very dependable source of vision, that good eye retired completely from compensating for the deficiencies of the other eye.

I had adapted to living with one good eye and one partially seeing eye. But, when the partially bad eye switched to being the better eye, my first thoughts focused on my ability to travel.

How to Travel With a Visual Impairment?

As an avid cruiser, I know that some of the benefits of cruising, especially unpacking once and knowing my living area, makes this form of travel more accessible. Most reassuringly, I know that the excellent crews aboard ships could provide assistance if necessary, even though stubbornness makes me reluctant to ask. I pretend to be independent.

My first big cruise after vision loss was the Holland America Line Rotterdam trans-Atlantic anniversary crossing. At embarkation, I met a kind young woman who noticed something odd. Not my usual weirdness this time; perhaps my hesitation prompted her to offer to help me navigate the terminal. Knowing the layout of Holland America’s Pinnacle-class ships helped tremendously once I got on board, but also contributed to some imprudent overconfidence at times.

I continue to learn new adaptation techniques and offer the following tips for others with visual impairment, knowing full well that none of us with this condition are exactly the same.

Planning

Seek a knowledgeable travel advisor who knows the intricacies of the ships. Let them know your challenges. Requesting a room near an elevator, dining area, or activity venue reduces chances of missteps. Take note of whatever impedes you. For me, it’s low and dark furniture or thresholds.

Stateroom and bathroom entries may have high thresholds. An accessible stateroom may eliminate  these hazards. American Cruise Lines’ new coastal catamarans had few thresholds on their ships.

Upon boarding the ACL Glory, I headed to the dining room for lunch. I spotted an open table and suddenly found myself airborne followed by a face plant. Except for soreness everywhere and the embarrassment of being on display, I survived.

Looking forward isn’t always the best advice for those with no peripheral vision nor depth perception. I had tripped over an unseen.…

“When bread or pasta is made fresh, you can certainly taste the difference, which is why we take a close look at our culinary program to assess what we can make on board from scratch as another way to bring our Destination Dining culinary platform to life,” said Michael Stendebach, vice president of food, beverage, and rooms division for Holland America Line. “Chef Stowell’s new pasta and pizza are an exceptional addition to our ‘Made Fresh Daily’ menu items.”

  • At New York Pizza, the “Primo” pizza features salami, pickled peppers, and red onion on a freshly made crust.
  • Guests can savor a variety of freshly prepared options across all dining venues, including warm baguettes and handmade spaghetti.
  • Chef Ethan Stowell has crafted an Italian-inspired menu with pasta dishes and made-to-order pizzas with fresh crusts.
  • Daily offerings also feature gelato, waffle cones, and regionally inspired desserts.

Collaboration with Sur La Table

Holland America Line is partnering with Sur La Table to offer cooking classes at locations nationwide, starting in March 2025. The “Made from Scratch Ravioli with Holland America Line” class will teach participants to make pasta dough and delectable fillings, including smoked salmon ravioli with vodka cream sauce, Swiss chard and ricotta ravioli with lemon brown butter, and a Dutch-inspired stroopwafel apple crumble. Each class will provide step-by-step guidance on rolling, cutting, filling, and cooking ravioli.

“Our initial class on fresh fish with Sur La Table was fantastic, and we are excited to expand the partnership by having consumers prepare and cook a menu that is carefully crafted by both brands, connecting to the more than 140 ports we call across Europe,” said Kacy Cole, chief marketing officer for Holland America Line. “Sur La Table and Holland America Line share a vision that cuisine is a door to different cultures, and this new class will introduce participants to more of our global flavors, while benefiting from Sur La Table’s culinary authority and expertise.”

3. Do Pack Smart

When cruising, packing smart is vital. Bring essentials like swimwear, sunscreen, comfortable shoes for excursions, and light layers for cooler evenings. Don’t forget to pack a small carry-on with snacks, a change of clothes, and important items for the kids, as your luggage may not arrive in your cabin until later.

4. Do Take Advantage of Onboard Activities

Cruise ships are packed with amenities and activities designed specifically for families. Encourage your kids to join in on kids’ clubs, pool games, and family entertainment such as shows or movie nights. This allows kids to socialize and bond, while parents can enjoy some personal downtime.

5. Do Schedule Downtime

Cruising can be busy with numerous activities and excursions, but it’s essential to schedule some downtime for relaxation. Whether lounging by the pool, enjoying a family game, or simply taking in the ocean views, ensure everyone has a chance to unwind and recharge.

6. Do Embrace Family-Friendly Dining Options

One of the perks of cruising is the variety of dining options available. Explore family-friendly dining venues, buffets, and themed restaurants where everyone can find something they love. Consider making reservations to avoid long waits and enjoy the experience together.

The Don’ts of Family Cruising

1. Don’t Overpack

With limited cabin space, overpacking can easily become a problem. Stick to the essentials and consider the cruise’s laundry facilities if needed. Remember, you don’t need multiple outfits for each day—mix and match is key!

2. Don’t Ignore Safety Protocols

Before embarking, make sure to familiarize your family with the ship’s safety procedures, including muster drills and emergency contacts. Keep an eye on younger children, especially in crowded areas, and always establish a meeting spot in case anyone gets separated.

3. Don’t Underestimate the Importance of Budgeting

Cruises can seem all-inclusive, but extra costs can add up quickly. Set a budget for onboard spending (souvenirs, excursions, specialty dining) and plan for any additional expenses while at port. Keep track of expenses to avoid surprises on the final bill.

4. Don’t Stress About the Plan

Despite meticulous planning, some things may not go as expected. If an excursion is booked, but the weather won’t cooperate, don’t hesitate to change plans. Sometimes the best moments are unplanned, so embrace spontaneity and make the most of each situation.

5. Don’t Rely Solely on Technology

Although electronic devices can keep kids entertained, it’s essential to engage with your family during the cruise. Encourage everyone to participate in activities together, enjoy meals without screens, and take part in games or contests that the cruise staff might host.

6. Don’t Rush the Experience

Cruising offers a beautiful opportunity to enjoy every moment. Resist the urge to rush from one activity to the next. Take your time exploring the ship, savoring meals, and enjoying the breathtaking ocean views. Create lasting memories by fully immersing yourselves in the experience.

So pack your bags, gather your loved ones, and get ready for an extraordinary adventure on the high seas! Happy cruising!

CroisiEurope is launching a new Nile cruise aboard the fully-chartered RV Star of Luxor. Leveraging 48 years of experience in river cruising, CroisiEurope aims to become a leader in the Egyptian market.

The seven-night “Cruise on The Nile: The Land of the Pharaohs” itinerary departs from Luxor and features remarkable sites, including temples, tombs, pyramids, and vibrant villages along the Nile Valley. Key highlights include:

Karnak Temple Complex: One of ancient Egypt’s largest and most important religious sites, offering invaluable insights into its history and evolution.

Temple of Horus: A well-preserved ancient monument excavated in the mid-19th century after being buried for centuries.

Temple of Kom Ombo: Dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek and Haroeris, it was primarily damaged by earthquakes and erosion by the Nile. It was restored by Jacques de Morgan in 1893.

Philae Temple Complex: Dedicated to Isis, this complex dates back to 380 BC and was partially submerged by the Aswan Dam in 1902. In 1960, UNESCO facilitated its relocation to a nearby island for reconstruction.

Aswan Dam: One of the world’s largest dams, it regulates the Nile, prevents annual flooding, and provides electricity. It has enabled a dual-crop irrigation system.

Local Boat Tour: Explore granite islands and natural reserves, including the island of Elephantine.

Optional Excursions to Abu Simbel: Visit the impressive rock temples built by King Ramses II, which are known for their uniqueness.

Pre-Cruise Program in Cairo: Once the Grand Egyptian Museum opens, CroisiEurope will offer a four-day program covering historic Cairo, the Coptic district, the Giza Plateau with its pyramids and Sphinx, the Pyramid of Cheops, the Saqqara necropolis, and entry to the new museum.

Scheduled from March to December 2025 and February to December 2026, the cruise operates on the fully-chartered RV Star of Luxor, which accommodates 106 guests across 45 exterior cabins and eight spacious suites. Amenities include a restaurant, lounge/bar, library, large sun deck with sun loungers, a swimming pool, and a jacuzzi.
