by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 23, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Carnival Celebration, Carnival Cruise Line’s brand-new flagship, made its first call to a Caribbean port when the ship arrived in Grand Turk earlier today. Currently, Carnival Celebration is sailing its inaugural voyage, a six-day Thanksgiving cruise.

“It is an honor to bring our new flagship to Grand Turk, as its first Caribbean port of call and welcome our guests to experience the beauty of the island,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “Grand Turk is a popular destination with our guests and I’m looking forward to Carnival Celebration making many memorable visits going forward.”

After finishing up her visit to Grand Turk, Carnival Celebration will continue its maiden Thanksgiving voyage with a stop in Amber Cove on Thanksgiving Day. The ship will then stop in Nassau on Friday, spend Saturday cruising, and return to Port Miami on Sunday, November 27.

Carnival Celebration is Carnival’s second vessel of the fleet’s Excel class, a subclass of the Excel class. The new vessel can accommodate more than 6,000 guests and features more than 20 dining venues, a dozen bars and lounges, and more than 2,600 staterooms. Guests will have tons of dining options like the brand-new Latitudes: The Golden Jubilee and a brand-new restaurant by Emeril Lagasse, Emeril’s Bistro 1397. Like its sister ship Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration has six unique, themed, and specially designed zones. A major highlight of the ship is the award-winning all-electric roller coaster “BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster” which is located on the ship’s top deck. Carnival is most proud of its eco-friendly designed technology that powers the ship with clean LNG fuel.

There is also a brand-new experience debuting for cruisers ages 2-11 aboard Carnival Celebration! Camp Ocean will introduce the youngest passengers to the wonders of space exploration. The newly developed program was created in partnership with the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex and will provide the next generation of space explorers with NASA-inspired activities to further spark any interest in the cosmos. Activities vary by age group, but some highlights include designing a personal mission patch, constructing and racing their own Mars Rovers, creating and testing bridge physics, playing space-themed bingo, and immersive learning experiences about how objects orbit in space.

SEABOURN CELEBRATES SEABOURN VENTURE’S INAUGURAL VOYAGE TO ANTARCTICA

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 22, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Seabourn has reached another pivotal moment in the company’s history with Seabourn Venture making its first-ever visit to Antarctica.  The line’s first purpose-built expedition vessel, Seabourn Venture marked its maiden voyage to the “Great White Continent” with an official naming ceremony on Sunday, November 20, 2022.

Seabourn Venture’s guests served as honorary godparents and joined the ship’s godmother, global adventurer, and polar explorer, Alison Levine. Levine carried out her ceremonial duties virtually and wished Seabourn Venture blessings and many successful expeditions in her future. An honored and ceremonial tradition, the crew released a bottle made of ice that was broken against the ship. During the ceremony, the ship’s crew and guests were in high spirits and faced the chilly climate with complimentary Seabourn expedition-grade parkas.

Following the ceremony, Seabourn’s Vice President of Expedition Operations, Robin West, spoke excitedly about Seabourn’s history of expeditions and the legacy of the company’s brand. Luciano Bernacchi, Seabourn Venture’sExpedition Leader, commended Captain Stig Betten for locating the perfect location for the ceremony, which was met with blue skies and light wind.

“We’ve eagerly awaited Seabourn Venture’s maiden voyage to Antarctica since the moment the ship debuted earlier this year,” said Seabourn President Josh Leibowitz. “The extraordinary continent encapsulates exactly what we hope to bring to guests who sail aboard our new ship: adventure, discovery and awe-inspiring wonder. With the beauty of the Antarctic landscape and scenery in the background, it truly was the perfect place to name the most luxurious expedition ship, Seabourn Venture.”

Seabourn Venture officially launched on July 27, 2022, in Tromsø, Norway but Seabourn selected Antarctica for the ship’s naming ceremony because the southernmost continent closely represents everything the vessel was designed for. The ship left San Antonio, Chile on November 7, 2022, and sailed down the coast of Chile before reaching the icy continent of Antarctica.

While in Antarctica, the ship offered Zodiac rides and hiking tours led by a 26-member Expedition Team of scientists, wildlife experts, naturalists, and historians. Guests could also participate in several expeditions, including kayaking in breathtaking icy landscapes or diving through Antarctica getting an ocean-floor view of the continent’s waters with Seabourn’s luxurious expedition submarines.

A Year Filled with Cruise Exploration

From November 2022 to February 2023, Seabourn Venture will sail 11-to-22-day voyages to Antarctica, South Georgia, and the Falkland Islands that offer excursions such as up-close encounters with penguins and seals, bobbing icebergs, and visits to local research stations. The voyages will use the Zodiacs for landings while cruising along the Antarctic Peninsula.

In March and April 2023, Seabourn Venture will offer a series of 7-to-12-day voyages in Brazil and the Amazon, visiting cities in Brazil and sailing one of the world’s greatest rivers in South America.

RELATED: SEABOURN VENTURE EMBARKS ON INAUGURAL CRUISE

Starting in May 2023, Seabourn Venture will also offer two new itineraries through the British Isles and Iceland. The ship will depart from London on May 12, 2023, for a 12-day voyage through Ireland, Orkney Archipelago in Northern Scotland, and finishing up in Edinburgh, Scotland on May 24. From Edinburgh, the vessel will continue her northern trek for 11 days with various calls in Scotland before heading to Reykjavik, Iceland on June 4, 2023.

Between June and August of 2023, Seabourn Venture will explore the Arctic with a series of 14-and 15-day voyages to Greenland and Iceland. Departing on August 27, 2023, the ships will leave for a 23-day expedition along the Northwest Passage, one of the most well-known passages from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

Seabourn Venture’s Expedition-Friendly Design

Seabourn Venture has been specifically designed for diverse climates to PC6 Polar Class standards and includes modernized technology that extends the ship’s global deployment and abilities. The ship was created for an ultra-luxurious atmosphere while exploring some of the most remote destinations in the world.

The ship is staffed with a hospitable crew and a 26-person Expedition Team giving guests the option for the best expeditions on land and at sea. The team is filled with wilderness experts, historians, scientists, and naturalists that will give guests an in-depth overview of each place they visit. The team will convert information through formal presentations or casual conversations with guests throughout the ship.

The ship is equipped with kayaks and the appropriate number of Zodiacs required to transport every guest on an expedition at once. The ship also has two specially designed submarines with an occupancy of 6 people.

ATLAS OCEAN VOYAGES NAMES NEW WORLD TRAVELLER ALONGSIDE WORLD NAVIGATOR IN PATAGONIA

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 21, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Atlas Ocean Voyages celebrated a landmark occasion this past weekend with naming ceremonies for its newest vessels, World Traveller and World Navigator. World Navigator has been in service since last year but never received a proper naming ceremony due to Covid restrictions. Both ships were named in the fjords along the Beagle Channel’s Glacier Alley.

“Both yacht-style vessels specialize in expeditions to some of nature’s most spectacular destinations,” said James Rodriguez, Atlas’ president and CEO. “What a historic weekend for Atlas! It was inspiring to name these two spectacular ships surrounded by majestic glaciers.”

Some VIP guests at the ceremony included travel advisors, shareholders, media, and dignitaries from Argentina and Chile. World Traveller was named on November 19, followed by Zodiac sightseeing of Pia Glacier. In the evening, portraits of the ship’s godmothers were unveiled at the gala welcome reception before dinner. The naming ceremony for World Navigator was held on November 20, followed by a luncheon on the ship.

Polar-Class Cruise Ships

Both vessels are Polar Category C-and Ice Class 1B-certified and fit for global travelers looking to explore classic and rarely visited destinations. The modern ship offers guests all things five-star comfort, featuring an all-inclusive onboard experience and opulent accommodations. Guests can also choose from tons of in-depth excursions and specially designed private tours, making for a personalized voyage.

RELATED: ATLAS OCEAN VOYAGES OPENS SEASPA BY L’OCCITANE ON WORLD TRAVELLER

With an occupancy of only 100, guests will have an intimate experience with their fellow explorers with an almost 1:1 guest-to-staff ratio. This balance allows all guests to dive deeper into these remote and rare destinations in the Arctic and Antarctica, as well as more sought-after destinations in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Americas.

Disney Completes Purchase of Global Dream Megaship

by Julie Bouchner November 16, 2022
written by Julie Bouchner

The fate of Dream Cruises’ former megaship Global Dream has finally been decided. At 208,000 gross tons, the ship is one of the biggest ever designed, but unfortunately Dream Cruises went out of business along with its parent company, Genting Hong Kong.

Rumors first started swirling in October that Disney was in negotiations to buy the ship, but that became a reality today with a formal announcement by Disney on the acquisition.

According to Josh D’Amaro, chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, the new ship will help make the cruise line more available to all.

“Our cruise ships give us the unique opportunity to bring Disney magic to fans no matter where they are, and the addition of this ship will make a Disney Cruise Line vacation accessible to more families than ever before,” he said.

DISNEY CRUISE LINE NEW SHIP DETAILS:

  • The ship will be based outside of the United States.
  • Guests aboard the ship will experience innovative Disney experiences, entertainment features, and world-class dining.
  • The ship will have signature red funnels inspired by everyone’s favorite Disney mouse, Mickey Mouse!
  • The expected passenger capacity will be 6,000 guests on board.

RELATED: DISNEY CRUISE LINE IS ADDING NEW CHARACTERS TO MARVEL DAY AT SEA

The ship is currently under construction at MV Werften shipyard in Wismar, Germany and is expected to undergo some significant changes as the building resumes to align with the Disney brand. Disney expects the passenger capacity to be around 6,000 guests, down from 9,000 in the initial plans for the ship. MV Werften is already familiar with the Disney Cruise Line brand as they previously built Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, and Disney Wish.

There are no details yet about the itineraries or what to expect onboard, but the ship is scheduled for completion in 2025.

CARNIVAL CRUISE LINE ANNOUNCES SIGNIFICANT EXPANSION IN NORFOLK, VIRGINIA

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 15, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Today, Carnival Cruise Line announced that it will more than double its cruise offerings from Norfolk, Virginia in 2023. The company will extend its sailings to a consecutive six-month period from May through October. This announcement is the first step towards a suggested year-round cruise program from Norfolk beginning in 2025. Currently, Carnival and City of Norfolk leaders are discussing what terminal and port improvements are necessary to support significant growth in operations.

In 2023, Carnival plans to welcome approximately 100,000 guests, bringing the highest volume of cruise guests in the history of Norfolk’s Half Moone Cruise Center. The new 2023 offers are now available for booking, including four to ten-day voyages aboard Carnival Magic featuring stops in the Eastern Caribbean, The Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, and New England.

“We have been working closely with Norfolk city officials on this expansion since our successful restart earlier this year and it’s great to now share our plans with our guests,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “We look forward to building on our 20-year commitment to this community and continuing the momentum toward further expansion in the future, while increasing our positive economic impact in Norfolk.”

Carnival Cruise Line Virginia Sailings

Carnival Cruise Line has been sailing from Norfolk since 2022 but Carnival Magic, which began seasonal sailing for the first time in May, has become the largest ship to embark guests from the Norfolk Half Moone Cruise Center, following a variety of enhancements to the port. With an occupancy of up to 4,724 passengers, Carnival Magic offers a wide array of stateroom accommodations, a variety of dining choices, Carnival’s signature entertainment, water slides, the Cloud 9 spa, and the Serenity- an adult-only retreat.

“For twenty years, Norfolk has valued its partnership with Carnival Cruise Line. Today’s announcement is a significant milestone for our cruise program and our community,” said Norfolk Mayor Kenneth Alexander. “For a full six months next year, guests from across the Mid-Atlantic will have the chance to board a Carnival ship from Norfolk and beginning in 2025, our collective goal is for Carnival to set sail from Nauticus year-round”.

Carnival’s plan to extend Carnival Magic’s stay in Norfolk is part of a larger expansion of the cruise line’s mid-Atlantic guest operations. Beginning in June of 2023, Carnival will offer year-round service from New York when the 5,260-passenger Costa Venezia joins the fleet as Carnival Venezia. After the addition, Carnival Magic won’t have to split its spring/summer season between New York and Norfolk anymore, allowing the ship to remain in Norfolk for half the year.

Cruising With Disabilities: Tips Every Cruiser Should Know

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 14, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

One of the cruise and travel industry’s biggest advocates for accessibility is the Special Needs Group, a medical equipment and supply company that works as the leading global provider of wheelchair, scooter, oxygen and other special needs equipment rentals on board cruise ships.

Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine Founder and Editor-in-Chief Bill Panoff met up with Special Needs Group CEO Andrew Garnett to check out some of the equipment available to cruisers to help them get the most out of their cruise vacation. The first item was one of the lightest wheelchairs available at only 19 pounds in total with removable wheels bringing the weight to an even smaller 13 pounds. Traditional wheelchairs can weigh around fifty pounds so the new design from Special Needs Group is a significant reduction and can help cruisers who struggle with mobility get their chair from place to place much easier.

RELATED: SPECIAL NEEDS GROUP CONTINUES IMPROVING CRUISE ACCESSIBILITY

The company also provides a newly designed mobility scooter that’s a fraction of the weight of a traditional scooter. Usually over 100 pounds, scooters can be a hassle. Special Needs Group’s design drops the weight to 37 pounds and has a unique foldable design for easier storage!

The best part is Special Needs Group can be found in over 70 countries so no matter where you’re cruising, you’re never far from the help you need to get around! Check out the full video with Andrew Garnett and let us know in the comments if you’ve tried any of the products!
