AIDA Cruises Opens Denmark’s First Shore Power Facility

by Porthole Cruise and Travel June 20, 2023
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

AIDA Cruises announced the opening of its own first shore power facility June 20, 2023, at the Port of Aarhus. In addition, the vessel AIDAmar was fueled successfully from shore in regular operation.

Prior to today, the ship AIDAsol was the first cruise ship to be successfully fueled on shore and pass all vessel integration exams.

“We were the first cruise line to start using shore power in Europe!,” said the President of AIDA Cruises, Felix Eichhorn. “We show that we stand by our word, which we gave to our Cruise Baltic partners in 2022, and are pleased that our ships can now also use shore power in a Danish Port.”

AIDA Cruises had previously considered using shore power in the process of planning and building of its ships since 2004. Ten years passed before the cruise line could have started regular operations at Europe’s first shore power facility in Hamburg Altona in 2017.

Since 2021, AIDA vessels have been able to use shore power from different renewable energy sources in Kiel, Germany and rostock-Warnemunde. In 2022, the company expanded its use of first shore power facilities as more European cruise destinations became available and as first shore power facilities were established in Norway and the UK.

As part of its Green-Cruising strategy, AIDA Cruises has invested in the sustainable cruise business for years. Also, with the use of reduced emission liquified natural gas (LNG), AIDA is expanding the use of alternative fuel sources such as batteries and shore power to operate its vessels.

Currently, with other partners, AIDA is working towards solutions on using fuel cells and other replenishable synthetic fuel sources and implementing more technology to achieve these goals.

As a partner of the Carnival Corporation and the plc cruise brand, AIDA is working towards net-zero emissions for its vessels by 2050.

Will you be sailing with AIDA Cruises on your next  trip? Let us know in the comments.

Liv Cooke Sets New World Record Aboard Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas

by Porthole Cruise and Travel June 19, 2023
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

In an exciting start to a year of record-breaking bookings, Royal Caribbean International collaborates with Liv Cooke, the world champion of freestyle football, for an extraordinary world record endeavor on Symphony of the Seas. With the AquaTheater as a backdrop, Liv Cooke accomplishes an impressive feat, landing an astonishing 76 alternating crossovers in just 30 seconds. This achievement breaks the existing record for the “Most Sit-down Alternating Crossovers with a Football in 30 seconds (female).”

This achievement becomes Cooke’s seventh world record, and her first completed onboard a cruise ship. As an ambassador and social media personality for the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), Cooke is known for showcasing her skills as a freestyle footballer, with her videos racking up hundreds of millions of views.

“Symphony of the Seas was incredible, and there’s so much to do, so I couldn’t think of a more unique place to achieve my latest record,” said Cooke. “I’m always pushing myself outside of my comfort zone and trying new things, so I’m hyped to have completed this challenge! When you’re on a ship like this or on holiday and have access to activities you normally don’t, give it a go!”

In order to have a unique experience onboard, Cooke is motivating passengers aboard to challenge themselves and try something different. The inspiration for this came from a survey that was recently conducted by Royal Caribbean. Findings from the survey revealed that 64 percent of individuals from the UK feel more adventurous when trying novel experiences while on vacation. 44 percent of respondents indicated that they seek out new encounters while traveling. The top five personal travel aspirations for this year include:

  • Exploring a new country (29%)
  • Indulging in new and exotic cuisines (28%)
  • Enhancing physical fitness (23%)
  • Immersing oneself in a new culture or language (22%)
  • Attending a captivating theater performance (22%)

Ben Bouldin, Vice President of Europe, Middle East, and Africa for Royal Caribbean International, expressed his delight at hosting Liv Cooke’s recent and successful world record attempt stating, “As a cruise line known for introducing many firsts in the vacation industry, it was an honour to host Liv Cooke for her most recent and successful world record attempt. We know our guests and the British public are just as excited about breaking their own personal records on holiday, and there are many ways they can do that with Royal Caribbean. Whether it’s managing to stand up on the FlowRider, taking on the Ultimate Abyss or trying a new sport, there are experiences for every type of adventurer.”

Royal Caribbean has an array of exciting “firsts” in store for travelers this year. Some of the highlights include:

  • FlowRider: Guests can ride the waves while surrounded by breathtaking ocean views on the surf simulators available on various ships such as Anthem and Odyssey of the Seas.
  • Zipline: Thrill-seekers can soar high above the signature Boardwalk on multiple ships like Symphony and Wonder of the Seas.
  • The Ultimate Abyss: Holidaymakers can take a thrilling plunge down this 10-story high test of courage found on ships like Allure, Symphony, and Wonder of the Seas.
  • RipCord by iFly: Onboard multiple ships, including Anthem and Odyssey, adventurers can experience the exhilaration of freefall with the world’s first skydiving experience at sea, all without leaving the deck.
  • North Star: Holding the esteemed Guinness World Records title for the tallest observation deck on a cruise ship, this all-glass observation capsule extends 91 meters (300 feet) above sea level, providing unmatched 360-degree ocean views and breathtaking shores. North Star can be enjoyed on multiple ships, including Anthem and Odyssey.

Golfing at St. Andrews in Scotland for Father's Day
Cruise DealsFeaturedFive Faves

Father’s Day Five

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine June 16, 2023
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

JUST AS FATHER KNOWS BEST, HE ALSO deserves the best. Rather than going with the same old standbys, let cruise magic add a little extra to your Father’s Day gift.

Father’s Day is only a few shopping days away, but planning your present couldn’t be easier. Take the stereotypical dad-gift, add a bit of creative cruise thinking, and voila! — you make the Father’s Day memory of a lifetime! And the best part? Dad can’t cruise alone, so you can totally get in on the fun as well. Isn’t he always saying it’s better to give than to receive? Here’s how to upgrade each dad-egory:

SPORT: 18 Holes at St Andrews Links (Fife, Scotland)

Home sweet home! Golfers of all skill sets will appreciate the opportunity to take some swings at St Andrews Links, considered the home of golfing for more than 600 years. Part pilgrimage and part pure sport at its finest, a day at the Links is unlike any other spoiled walk, just as cruising along Scotland’s eastern coast is equally unrivaled.

RELATED: 3 REASONS TO TAKE A CRUISE THIS MOTHER’S DAY

WARDROBE: The Suashish Necktie

Dad probably already has a tie with portholes on it, so go with what would normally be considered a girl’s best friend and splurge on this 77-carat, 271-diamond-strong, pure silk necktie that also boasts 150 grams of gold and is conveniently priced just north of $200,000. A collaboration between India-based designer Satya Paul and diamond-manufacturer Suashish, this tie would look perfect on the top deck while cruising Mumbai… as well as the bottom shelf of a fireproof safe.

FOOD: The Momofuku Ando Instant Ramen Museum (Osaka, Japan)

Momofuku Ando Instant Ramen Museum
Inside the cup at the Ramen Museum. Photo: chee.hong

Grandparents can clue you into your father’s upbringing and mothers can regale you with stories about domesticating that wild child years later, but no one loves talking about those in-between, bachelor glory days quite like a father. Pretend you were listening by cruising him to a museum devoted to his favorite food of that era: the super-cheap ramen noodle! Learn about the history and technique, then create your own special cup noodle! Nostalgia never tasted so delicious!

BEVERAGE: Beer Cruises

Many lines are leaning into the beer renaissance that today’s fathers are fortunate enough to be living through, with themed cruises that visit far-flung breweries, offer expert lectures, and, most importantly, sample the goods. Maybe it’s AmaWaterways sampling pilsners in Pilzen, or maybe it’s the RedFrog Pub & Brewery aboard Carnival Vista. Pinpoint Papa’s preferred potent potable, connect corresponding cruises, then cheers to beers!

GROOMING: Beard It Up
There are a few ways to face up to fatherly facial hair. For the “haves,” the annual Outlaw Country Cruise features a “Best Beard” contest in between live acts ranging from Mojo Nixon to Steve Earle. For the “have nots,” the razor-sharp facial pampering at Hook’s Barbery on Disney Wish includes a speakeasy bar along with the shave and a haircut.
And for when you’re not out on a cruise, there are plenty of shaving subscription boxes out there. Or, best of all, there’s always a subscription to Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine discounted for Father’s day, for all the cruise inspo a dad could dream of!

Click here for the 25% off discount!

MSC Cruise Division Announces Expansion of Shore Power Plan

by Porthole Cruise and Travel June 15, 2023
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

The Cruise Division of MSC Group has released details about the next steps of its shore power plan. MSC Cruises’ ships will have the ability to plug into shoreside electricity grids at 15 ports in 2024 and 2026!  Having shoreside electricity facilities deepens the cruise lines’ dedication to reduce emissions and further its goal of decarbonization.

The 2024-2026 shore power plan consists of 16 ports and at least five Italian ports, which include: Miami, Barcelona, Valencia, Spain, Stavanger and Nordfjordeid, Norway as well as Copenghagen, Denmark, Marseille, France, Rotterdam, Netherlands, Valletta, Malta and  Stockholm, Sweden.

“Shore power is an important factor in our journey toward net zero greenhouse gas emissions,” said Linden Coppell, VP of Sustainability & ESG of MSC Cruises. “All of our newbuilds since 2017 are equipped with the ability to plug into local power grids and we are rolling retrofits on the other vessels in our fleet.”

MSC Groups’ Cruise Division intends for the fleet  to take advantage of shore power facilities as well as all other facilities once they become available. The use of a shore power facility removes the need of a ship to keep its engine running and reduces port emissions immensely.

RELATED: MSC GROUP ANNOUNCES EXPANSION OF CRUISE DIVISION’S SHORE POWER PLAN

MSC Cruises’ vessels have used shore power successfully in the ports in Southampton, UK and the ports of Kristiansand, Norway since February 2023. Later this summer, MSC Cruises will test the shore power facilities at the Norwegian port of Haugesund. Their tests in Europe are also scheduled at Bergen and Alesund in Norway, as well as in Warnemunde, Germany.

The ability to use shore power facilities has been ensured on all MSC Cruises’ ships since 2017. With retrofits completed on all vessels, 67 percent of MSC Cruises’ ship capacity is equipped with this technology.

All of MSC Cruises’ Explora Journey’s ships will include the ability to use shore power facilities. Explora I, is the first ship that will use a shore power facility July 17,2023.

MSC Group Announces Expansion of Cruise Division’s Shore Power Plan

by Porthole Cruise and Travel June 14, 2023
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

MSC Group’s Cruise Division has unveiled its next expansion phase for its Shore Power Plan. MSC cruise ships will be able to utilize shoreside charging stations in 15 new ports between 2024 and 2026. The initiative continues MSC Group’s commitment to reducing emissions from the company’s fleet while docked.

RELATED: MSC CRUISES’ MSC EURIBIA SETS NEW STANDARDS IN SUSTAINABLE CRUISING WITH NET-ZERO EMISSIONS

The new ports set to receive these charging stations include:

  • Miami, United States
  • Barcelona, Spain
  • Valencia, Spain
  • Stavanger, Norway
  • Nordfjordeid, Norway
  • Copenhagen, Denmark
  • Marseille, France
  • Rotterdam, Netherlands
  • Valletta, Malta
  • Stockholm, Sweeden
  • Five other Italian ports

Once the shore power stations become available, all MSC Cruises ships, along with the Explora Journey’s fleet, will be able to use the facilities. In addition, the company will also be utilizing charging stations in the German ports of Hamburg this winter, and Kiel in the summer of 2024. Using electricity from the ports eliminates the need for ships to keep their engines running, dramatically reducing in-port emissions from vessels.

“Shore power is an important factor on our journey toward net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) operations,” said VP of Sustainability & ESG for MSC Cruises Linden Coppell.

Since February 2023, the brand’s fleet has been able to utilize shoreside power at the ports of Southampton, United Kingdom, and Kristiansand, Norway. The company will begin testing its new facilities in the Norwegian port of Haugesund later this summer. Additional testing is scheduled for this year in Bergen and Alesund in Norway, along with Warnemunde in Germany.

Last year, MSC Cruises signed a memorandum of understanding with Cruise Baltic regarding shore power in the Baltic Sea area. With 32 ports and destinations in the Baltic region, Cruise Baltic is committed to increasing the amount of available shore power facilities.

Since 2017, MSC Cruises’ fleet has been equipped with shore power capabilities. Along with retrofits to older vessels, 67 percent of the company’s fleet is capable of using shore power facilities. As more ports make shore power available, more of the company’s fleet will be upgraded to use the facilities.

Explora Journeys’ entire fleet will be shore power-compatible. The first ship in their fleet, EXPLORA I, will enter service on July 17, 2023.

“All of our newbuilds since 2017 are equipped with the ability to plug into local power grids and we are rolling out retrofits on the other vessels in our fleet,” said Coppell. “Our shore power plan actively demonstrates our ambition and that we are fully committed to reducing emissions from our ships, including while in port. We have invested heavily in hybrid exhaust gas cleaning systems to substantially reduce local air quality emissions and we now need more ports across Europe and beyond to introduce shore power as quickly as possible. By making major reductions to emissions in ports, we are fulfilling our responsibility to the ports and coastal communities that our ships visit and serve. Together with the use of LNG fuel, improving energy efficiency, utilizing innovative wastewater treatment and waste recycling, we are making positive strides in playing our part to address climate change and protect ocean biodiversity.”

MSC Euribia, MSC Cruises’ newest flagship, boasts the world’s most energy-efficient cruise ship design and performed an industry-first earlier this month, demonstrating a ship’s potential to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions using renewable bio-LNG while sailing from France to Denmark.

Extraordinary Extras On The Scenic Eclipse

by Dana Freeman June 12, 2023
written by Dana Freeman

Catering to a select group of 228 passengers, Scenic Eclipse, The World’s First Discovery Yacht™, seamlessly combines luxury travel with adventurous cruising.  But what truly sets this all-suite, ultra-luxury expedition ship apart is the wide range of extraordinary experiences it offers. While the inclusive options such as zodiac rides, e-biking, and snorkeling provide incredible opportunities for discovery, there are a few select adventures that are worth every penny. Picture yourself soaring above breathtaking landscapes in a helicopter or diving deep below the surface in a submarine. Additionally, the ship offers an array of mouthwatering meals where guests can indulge in exclusive dining experiences and savor exquisite flavors from around the world. These extraordinary offerings go above and beyond, creating unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime moments.

Helicopter Rides

Helicopter ride | Photo: Dana Freeman

Two Airbus H130-T2 helicopters offer cruise guests soar high above the Earth to witness its beauty from an entirely new perspective. Capable of carrying up to six passengers at a time, the helicopters have state-of-the-art technology and safety features, making them a reliable and safe way to explore remote areas. But what truly sets them apart is the wow factor provided by the large wrap-around windows, designed to give you a front-row seat to all of the action. Picture yourself sitting inside a glass globe, treated to a mesmerizing bird’s eye view of the scenery below.

Although the H130 is extremely quiet, guests wear Bose voice-activated, noise-canceling headphones during the flight to listen to the pilot and communicate with the other passengers. Depending on the terrain, everyone is looking to point out pods of whales, penguin colonies, seals, waterfalls, glaciers and other wildlife they might see. The pilot is always happy to take another swing around to get closer and confirm the sighting.

Whether you’re seeking adventure or simply looking to experience the world from a new perspective, booking a helicopter ride it’s a luxury adventure worth splurging for.

Pricing: varies by region ranging from $575 – $750 for a 30-minute ride.

Submarine Rides

Scenic Neptune Submarine | Photo: Richard Brierley

Dubbed the Scenic Neptune, the custom-built six-passenger, battery-powered U-Boat Worx Cruise Sub 7 allows guests to go below the ocean’s surface to observe sea life in its natural habitat without ever getting their hair wet. Submersibles are one of the safest ways to explore the ocean’s depths, whether diving down to Antarctica’s sea floor or exploring the Caribbean’s colorful coral reefs.

Explicitly designed for sightseeing excursions, Scenic’s luxurious air-conditioned sub can dive to a depth of 200 meters. Each passenger sits in a comfortable seat that swivels 280 degrees, maximizing view capabilities. Depending on the region of the cruise, you may see schools of brightly colored fish or dolphins and maybe even encounter whales, sea turtles, manta rays, or reef sharks.

Notes: Submarines dives are weather-dependent (current, wind, swell), and you do not choose your dive day. The cruise team will assign you a day and time and send a note to your cabin. Additionally, you need to be mobile enough to board the sub and go down the hatch, and if you are at all claustrophobic, this may not be the right experience for you.

Pricing: varies by region ranging from $750 – 795 for a 40-minute ride.

Chef’s Table

Chef’s Table | Photo: Richard Brierley

The Chef’s Table is the ultimate gastronomic adventure on the Scenic Eclipse. Prepare to be captivated by the theater of culinary creation as you take your seat at a hidden table located within Elements restaurant. You will notice not only are there two large windows giving you direct access to the bustling galley, but you’ll also see that the table is set with an abundance of wine glasses and special accouterments such as an hourglass sand timer and a special box of silverware needed for each dish.

This exclusive, invite-only, 11-course dining experience combines the artistry of modern and molecular cooking. The culinary team invests over 24 hours in meticulous preparation to deliver an extraordinary dining experience, and the result is a thoughtfully crafted menu that utilizes local ingredients whenever possible.

Throughout the meal, the Head Chef presents deconstructed or creatively reimagined versions of traditional dishes inspired by the remarkable destinations the ship has visited. Additionally, each course is expertly paired with a carefully chosen selection of fine wines. If you’re fortunate enough to secure a seat at The Chef’s Table, it will be a meal you will remember for a long time.

Notes: Although there is no extra charge for this private-dining experience, it does require an invitation. Reservations are not possible.

Nightmarket

Nightmarket | Photo: Dana Freeman

Tucked away at the back of Koko’s, the Night Market offers an exclusive private dining experience centered around an open teppanyaki grill. However, this isn’t your run-of-the-mill teppanyaki meal with the iconic flaming onion tower. Instead, it’s an intimate affair reserved for just eight guests, ensuring each person receives personalized attention from the skilled Chef.

The vibrant flavors of Night Markets in Asia, India, and the Middle East and some of the Chef’s family recipes provide the inspiration for this gastronomic journey. Over the course of several hours, the Chef will guide you through an exquisite eight-course feast, artfully preparing each complex dish right before your eyes. This unique meal is a culinary adventure where every bite is meant to transport you to the bustling Night Markets of these captivating regions.

Notes: Although there is no extra charge for this private-dining experience, it does require reservations.
