Cruise Dining 101: A Guide to Menus, Reservations, and More

by Porthole Cruise and Travel July 3, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Embarking on a cruise can be an exciting experience, but navigating the culinary options on board can be overwhelming.

From fine dining to casual buffets and from reservations to special requests, it’s easy to feel like you’re lost at sea when it comes to cruise ship dining. Fear not, dear traveler! This guide will help you navigate the world of cruise ship cuisine and ensure that you make the most of your dining experience.

Menu Options

Cruise ships offer a range of dining options to suit every taste and budget. Here are some of the most common menu options you’ll find on board:

Main Dining Room: The main dining room is the ship’s formal restaurant, offering a set menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Reservations are usually required.
Specialty Restaurants: These restaurants offer a unique dining experience, such as fine dining, seafood, or steakhouse-style cuisine. Reservations are often recommended.
Buffet: The buffet is a casual, self-serve option offering a wide range of international cuisine.
Casual Dining: These eateries offer quick and easy meals, such as sandwiches, salads, and snacks.
Room Service: Many cruise ships offer room service, allowing passengers to enjoy meals in the comfort of their cabins.

Reservations

Reservations are usually required for specialty restaurants and the main dining room. Here are some tips for making reservations:

  • Check your cruise line’s website or app for reservation availability and policies.
  • Make reservations as soon as possible after booking your cruise to secure your spot.
  • Consider making reservations for special occasions or birthdays.
  • Don’t forget to request any special dietary needs or requests when making your reservation.

Dining Times

Dining times vary by cruise line and itinerary. Here are some general guidelines:

The Main Dining Room typically serves breakfast from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. and lunch from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. Dinner is usually served from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Specialty Restaurant hours vary depending on the restaurant and ship.

A buffet is typically open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Tips for a Stress-Free Dining Experience

1. Make a plan: Decide which restaurants you want to try and make reservations accordingly.
2. Dress code: Check the dress code policy for each restaurant to avoid any fashion faux pas.
3. Don’t forget your credit card: Bring your credit card for incidentals and gratuities.
4. Ask questions: Don’t be afraid to ask your server or maitre d’ for recommendations or special requests.
5. Be prepared for crowds: Popular restaurants can get busy, so plan accordingly.

Special Requests

Many cruise ships cater to special dietary needs and preferences. Here are some tips:

1. Notify the cruise line: Inform the cruise line of any special dietary needs or requests when booking your cruise.
2. Check the menu: Review menus before booking a table to ensure they accommodate your dietary needs.
3. Ask your server: Let your server know about any special requests or needs when ordering.

Cruise ship dining can be a highlight of your vacation, but it can also be overwhelming with so many options. By understanding the different menu options, making reservations, and following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to a stress-free and enjoyable dining experience at sea. Bon appétit!

Ship Review: Icon of the Seas

by JIll Weinlein July 3, 2024
written by JIll Weinlein

Kicking off 2024 with a sailing on Icon of the Seas from Miami, Florida, I learned that this largest ship at sea has been a dream of Royal Caribbean Group for years. President and CEO Jason Liberty, speaking at the ship’s naming ceremony in January, shared: “Icon of the Seas is the culmination of more than 50 years of dreaming, innovating, and living our mission to deliver the world’s best vacation experiences responsibly.”

Throughout the cruise, I had the opportunity to chat with executives and officers to learn more about the sustainability of this 1,198-foot-long, 20-deck ship. “Icon of the Seas is Royal Caribbean’s most sustainable ship today,” said Liberty. “Every ship class is getting more efficient. The Oasis class was 20 percent more efficient than the class before, and now the Icon is even better.”

For more than 30 years, Royal Caribbean Group’s sustainable practices focused on discovering lower-carbon energy solutions. “We launched our ‘SEA the Future’ initiative as both a platform and a pledge to uphold our values.” said Liberty. ‘SEA’ is an acronym for the cruise line’s commitment to Sustain our planet, Energize communities and Accelerate innovation.

The Icon of Icon

On January 25, the largest passenger ship at sea was named by history’s most-decorated fútbol player, Lionel  Messi — seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, World Cup Champion, and now the star member of David Beckham’s Inter Miami soccer team.

“Mister Messi truly is a global icon,” says Michael Bayley, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International. And rather than granting Messi the usual title of “godfather,” the line officially refers to him as “the Icon of Icon.”

Thinking Green

A team of architects and designers built Icon of the Seas to carry up to 7,600 combined guests and crew. I learned that a ship this size has many sustainable innovations from the bow to the stern.

During a day at sea, I met with Nick Rose, Vice-President of Environmental and Sustainability Management for Royal Caribbean. “Throughout the ship, LED lights provide a reduction in energy use and produce less heat,” he said. “The lubrication systems have microscopic bubbles that coat the hull and help to reduce friction for a smoother ride.”

Another buzzword I heard often throughout the cruise was “LNG”: the ship’s liquefied natural gas-powered engines. “The six dual-engines have the ability to use LNG. This cleaner fuel emits about 25 percent less carbon dioxide than traditional marine fuels,” said Rose.

The company is also testing biofuels as an alternative fuel in the planning of future ships. Symphony of the Seas became the first ship in the maritime industry to successfully test and use a biofuel blend in Barcelona. The Port of Barcelona is working to become an energy hub, producing and supplying zero-carbon fuels, such as green hydrogen, methanol, and synthetic fuels.

“With the successful trial of biofuels on the Royal Caribbean International’s Symphony of the Seas and Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Apex, the company is hopeful to achieve its goal of net-zero cruising by 2035,” said Rose.

These biofuel blends were tested and accredited by International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC), a globally recognized organization that ensures sustainability of biofuels and verifies reductions of related emissions.

“Every kilowatt used is scrutinized for energy efficiencies and reduction in emissions,” said Rose. Excess heat from the engines is repurposed into warm water for the ship. Icon has also been designed to plug into local power grids on shore at ports where it is available, further reducing the ship’s environmental footprint.

Experience and Energy

Stepping into my spacious stateroom with a balcony, I realized the room was designed with an occupancy-based air conditioning control system. When I opened my balcony door, the air conditioning switched off. This optimizes energy consumption in staterooms.

Another day while at sea, I toured Captain Henrik Loy’s bridge and learned how AI-based technology helps optimize the ship’s routes for maximum efficiency.

Later when I took a tour of the ship’s onboard treatment system and recycling area, I learned that the water is treated above the regulatory standards. The state-of-the-art waste management room has a single-stream recycling process. “We use microwave-assisted pyrolysis technology to turn trash into energy on board,” said Rose. “The ship’s recycling program ensures that more than 90 percent of trash never reaches a landfill.”

The ship also has a desalination plant on board. “After water is treated, one could drink it, it’s that clean,” said Rose. “About 93 percent of the fresh water produced on board is via reverse osmosis.”

Royal Caribbean Group helps protect the sea by collaborating with Save The Waves. Since 1992, they’ve ensured that no solid waste goes overboard. Royal Caribbean Group was the first in the industry to launch a variety of environmental initiatives to help reduce their environmental footprint and protect the ocean communities.

They also partner with scientists at University of Miami’s OceanScope program to collect and share critical ocean data using their ships across the world.

Since partnering with the World Wildlife Fund since 2016, they help track polar bears in the Arctic, and support conservation across the Great Sea Reef region.

For the Cruisers

I also learned that the Royal Caribbean Group reads every passenger’s after-cruise survey. “Passengers have a voice,” said Liberty. “We reach out to our guests to determine how we can improve their cruise experience.”

Since guests want to move easily from the moment they board the ship to the day they disembark, the designers of Icon of the Seas included escalators to help with movement on and off the ship. I will attest that it did make boarding and disembarking safer, easier, and faster.

Wandering around the ship, I explored most of the 40 different restaurants, bars, and lounges, plus 28 different cabin categories in seven different neighborhoods. Over at the Surfside family-style neighborhood, the stunning three-story 1,772-square-foot Ultimate Family Townhouse is a beach house–style stateroom that sleeps up to eight guests. Not only does this one-of-a-kind suite have an in-suite slide, it also offers a movie-viewing room, gaming area, ensuite primary room, and private Jacuzzi on one of the many terraces.

The open-air Central Park neighborhood has 20 percent more trees and vegetation giving off oxygen from 33,500 plants. This serene area displays stunning artwork, restaurants, and outdoor bars.

“Couples and families shared on the survey how much they enjoy spending time at the pools and water park,” shared Liberty, “so the Icon of the Seas offers 62 percent more water and seven different swimming pools.”

One of those seven swimming pools is the first suspended infinity pool at sea, located at The Hideaway neighborhood’s beach club. Other outdoor water fun includes a six-slide water park at the largest water park at sea. The new Crowns Edge is where passengers can be harnessed 154 feet above the ocean to follow a thrilling ropes course with standing platforms.

In mid-July 2024, Royal Caribbean is debuting a new Icon-class ship, Utopia of the Seas, sailing into Port Canaveral for shorter getaways on 3-night weekend and 4-night weekday cruises.

Icon of the Seas sails 7-night itineraries from Miami to a variety of Caribbean destinations that include Puerto Rico, St. Kitts, and Cozumel, Mexico. Most of the cruises stop for a perfect day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas.

The “Inside” Story

by Judi Cuervo July 2, 2024
written by Judi Cuervo

Some people think that the only way you can truly enjoy a cruise is if you’re ensconced in a luxury suite with the three “B”s:  A balcony, a butler and a bathtub.  Not true.

I, personally, fell in love with cruising while occupying an inside cabin, the only category my travel companion and I could afford at 19 years of age.

Today, the inside cabin remains the most economical way to cruise and has changed dramatically from the closet-like atmosphere that my friend and I endured at 19.  Many interior accommodations, like Norwegian Cruise Line’s “Studios,” are designed with solo travelers in mind and feature a special Studio Lounge for meeting and mingling with other Studio dwellers.  Some of Holland America’s interior staterooms measure a generous 200 square feet and some Royal Caribbean ships offer cabins with a window that overlooks the ship’s interior promenade while others feature a “virtual” balcony—an 82” LED high-definition screen that offers a real-time view of the outside world.  Disney offers family interior staterooms—164 square feet with a “bath and a half”—a toilet and sink in one bath; a shower, toilet and sink in the other.

But before you book your inside cabin, here are some tips and tricks you might want to keep in mind—you might say it’s the “inside” scoop!

Going Solo?:  An inside cabin is best for solo travelers, but don’t let that stop you from inviting a friend—a good friend—along for the ride.

Stay Tidy:  The cozy inside cabin demands a level of tidiness, particularly if you’re sharing with a partner or friend.  Pack a couple of magnetic hooks, multi-garment hangers, and a hanging shoe organizer to expand storage.  A cosmetic bag that may hooks onto the bathroom door frees up vanity space.

The Buddy System:  When sharing an inside cabin, organize “shifts” for showering and dressing.  While you are getting ready for dinner, your cabinmate may lounge at the pool for an extra hour or have a drink or two at a shipboard lounge until it’s his or her turn.

Bring Earplugs:  Face it:  your inside cabinmate might snore louder than the ship’s foghorn, so come prepared.  Foam earplugs are comfortable and effective not only against your snoring but also any howls from the bratty toddler throwing a tantrum on your flight.

Location, Location, Location:  Inside cabins are spread throughout the ship, giving guests an opportunity to select the location most important to them.  Worried about motion sickness?  Select a cabin midship on a lower deck.

The Best Afternoon Naps:  Even the most effective black-out curtains can’t keep that streak of blinding Caribbean sun from peeking in.  Extinguish the lights in your inside cabin and you’ll enjoy your afternoon nap in complete darkness—pack a night light if you’d prefer a gentle glow.

Take Advantage of Technology:  Inside cabins feature an interactive television just like every other cabin on the ship.  Set your TV to “View from the Bridge” before retiring and, when you wake, you’ll know if the sun has risen and what the weather is like outside.

As the occupant of an inside cabin, you won’t be hosting cocktail parties for newfound friends or looking forward to romantic room service dinners au deux.  But you’ll be able to enjoy all of the dining, entertainment, activities and destinations everybody else is.

And, thanks to your inside cabin’s reasonable fare, you’ll have a few extra bucks in your pocket for a spa treatment, specialty dining or a few rolls at the casino!

Oceania Cruises Celebrates the Float Out of Allura

by Julie Bouchner July 1, 2024
written by Julie Bouchner

Oceania Cruises has achieved a significant milestone as its new 1,200-guest ship, Allura, was floated out of dry dock at the Fincantieri shipyard in Sestri Ponente, Italy. Allura is the eighth vessel to join Oceania’s fleet and the second ship in the Allura Class, following in the footsteps of its sister ship, Vista, launched in 2023.

A brief ceremony marked the occasion, during which Father Stefano, the shipyard’s chaplain, blessed the ship as a gesture of respect for General Claudio Graziano, who recently passed away. Caterina Romeo, a designer from Fincantieri’s technical department, then officially christened Allura.

“The float out is an important moment for all at Oceania Cruises and Fincantieri, as we progress closer to Allura joining our family. Now that we have completed her shell, we are excited to get started on her interior. We have lots of exciting enhancements on Allura, our eighth vessel, further elevating our offerings and firmly cementing Oceania Cruises as the only ultra-premium cruise brand.”

MORE ABOUT ALLURA

  • Allura features a new crepe and waffle cafe where guests can enjoy freshly made-to-order treats.
  • The ship’s luxurious library boasts floor-to-ceiling glass walls and plush seating, creating a serene relaxing atmosphere.
  • The ship features five specialty dining venues, including two new signature restaurants, available at no additional cost to guests.
  • The ship offers over 300 shore excursions, providing endless opportunities for exploration and adventure.
  • Onboard enrichment programs include art classes at the Artist Loft, guest speakers, and sommelier demonstrations during exclusive wine pairings.

Stateroom Smackdown: Lower Decks vs Higher Decks

by Porthole Cruise and Travel June 28, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

When booking a stateroom on a cruise ship, there are many factors to consider. But one of your most important decisions is opting for a stateroom on a lower or higher deck. Both options have pros and cons, and your choice depends on your preferences and priorities.

In this blog, we’ll break down the advantages and disadvantages of each option so you can make an informed decision about where to stay on your next cruise.

LOWER DECKS: THE BUDGET-FRIENDLY OPTION

Lower deck staterooms are often the most affordable option on a cruise ship. These rooms are usually located near the bottom of the ship and can offer some surprising benefits.

PROS

More room for less: Lower deck staterooms tend to be larger than those on higher decks, often with more square footage and amenities like private balconies or larger bathrooms.

Quieter and more peaceful: Lower deck rooms are farther from the action and noise of the ship’s public areas, so you may find it easier to get a good night’s sleep without being disturbed.

Fewer crowds: Lower deck staterooms are often less popular with passengers so you may have a more relaxed and intimate experience.

CONS

Limited views: Let’s face it – views from lower deck staterooms might not be as breathtaking as those from higher decks. You might look out at lifeboats or storage containers instead of the ocean.

Slower elevator access: If you need to head up to the ship’s public areas or restaurants, you’ll have to take the elevator, which might be slower than taking the stairs or using an express elevator on higher decks.

Limited amenities: Some lower deck staterooms might not have all the luxury amenities you’re used to, such as a mini-fridge or 24-hour room service.

HIGHER DECKS: THE LUXURY OPTION

Higher deck staterooms offer stunning views, luxurious amenities, and unparalleled access to shipboard activities. Here are some benefits to consider:

PROS

Breathtaking views: Imagine waking up to breathtaking ocean views every morning or enjoying a romantic dinner with a stunning vista. Higher deck rooms offer unobstructed views of the sea and surrounding landscape.

Premium amenities: Higher deck rooms often have upgraded amenities like plush bedding, marble bathrooms, and complimentary mini-bars.

Priority access: As a guest in a higher deck stateroom, you’ll often enjoy priority access to restaurants, lounges, and other shipboard facilities.

CONS

Smaller rooms: Staterooms on higher decks tend to be smaller than those on lower decks, which can be a drawback for those who value extra space.

More noise and crowds: Higher deck rooms are often closer to the ship’s public areas, which can mean more noise and crowds.

Higher price tag: Let’s face it – higher deck staterooms come with a higher price tag. You’ll pay extra for the luxury and convenience.

So, which is the real winner in this stateroom showdown? Ultimately, it depends on your personal preferences and priorities. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option with more space and a quieter experience, a lower deck stateroom might be the way to go. However, a higher deck stateroom could be your perfect match if you’re willing to splurge for stunning views, luxurious amenities, and priority access.

Whether you choose a lower or higher deck stateroom, remember there’s no wrong choice

The Late-Night Lowdown: Cruises After Dark

by Porthole Cruise and Travel June 26, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

When the sun sets on a cruise ship, the day’s crowds dissipate, and the night’s activities kick into high gear. The ship transforms into a party atmosphere, pulsating with live music, comedy shows, cocktail bars, and dance clubs. It’s an experience unlike any other.

Each cruise line and ship has unique amenities and offerings, ensuring there’s always something to do on board after dark. Whether you’re looking for a wild night out or a relaxing evening in, every ship has something to offer.

In this article, we’ll delve into the best bars and lounges, the most popular events, and other activities that make a cruise ship’s nightlife unforgettable.

Nightlife on Deck

The poolside bars and lounges come alive with music and laughter as passengers let loose and have a blast. The DJ’s spinning tracks, from hip-hop to rock to pop, get you moving and grooving.

But it’s not all about the dance floor. Many ships offer themed parties and events throughout the night, like costume contests, trivia nights, and even comedy shows. You might even stumble upon an impromptu karaoke session.

The Best Bars on Board

When you need a break from the party atmosphere, there’s no shortage of excellent bars. Every ship has unique watering holes, from swanky cocktail lounges to sports bars and wine cellars.

One of our favorites is the Cigar Bar on Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class ships. Its sleek design and extensive selection of cigars and spirits make it the perfect spot to relax with friends or enjoy a romantic evening out.

Another standout is the Rendezvous Lounge aboard Celebrity Cruises’ Millennium Class ships. The Rendezvous Lounge is a hub of evening entertainment. Before dinner, gather here for a pre-dinner cocktail and a chance to get your feet moving on the dance floor. Later, indulge in live music, dance the night away, and sip on one of our signature cocktails – the perfect way to unwind and make unforgettable memories with friends and family.

Late-Night Dining

While many think that dinner is only served during the day, cruise ships also offer a range of delicious dining options after dark. From 24-hour buffets to midnight buffets and specialty restaurants, there’s something for every taste and craving.

You can always order a late-night treat from room service. Many ships offer a limited menu until 1 a.m. or 2 a.m., so you can satisfy your cravings without having to leave your cabin.

The Quiet Hours

Many cruise ships offer designated quiet hours or adult-only areas for those who prefer a quieter atmosphere. These spaces provide a peaceful retreat from the ship’s lively entertainment options.

You can unwind in a lounge or library, read a book, or relax comfortably. Alternatively, stroll on the deck and enjoy the night sky, taking in the stars and the sound of the ocean waves.

Whether you’re looking for a wild night out or a relaxing evening in, there’s something for everyone on board. So next time you plan your next cruise vacation, don’t forget to check out what happens after dark – you never know what surprises await!

All of the food onboard is incredibly fresh, as it’s locally sourced from varying locations based on itineraries. There are over 10 restaurants to choose from on most Celebrity Cruises’ vessels, offering guests a wide range of options. As an added treat, Aqua Class guests may dine at two of the specialty dining restaurants, Blu and Luminae. Lastly, Celebrity Cruises proudly partners with Bravo TV, providing cruisers access to Top Chef at Sea. Reserving this exceptional experience as soon as possible is advisable due to limited availability. One of Viking Cruises’ standout features is the exceptional onboard service. The staff members are attentive and will remember your personal preferences, ensuring a seamless culinary experience.

Additionally, there is a wide range of market tour excursions available to book for all of the foodies out there. Guests can also indulge in Shopping With the Chef, where they accompany the chef on a tour of local markets, observing their ingredient selection process. The Conway Scenic Railroad, The Ultimate Cruise Tour Experience

by Bill Panoff June 24, 2024
written by Bill Panoff

I recently had the pleasure of riding the Conway Scenic Railroad, and I’d love to share my experience with you.

From the moment I boarded the historic train, I was transported back in time. The vintage cars’ meticulous restoration and authentic decor recreated the golden age of rail travel. The staff’s attention to detail was evident in every aspect, from decor to conductors’ stories about the railway’s history

The scenic journey through New Hampshire’s countryside was breathtaking. The train wound through picturesque landscapes, offering stunning views of the White Mountains and surrounding forests. Large windows provided a unique perspective on the passing scenery. The combination of natural beauty and historical significance made for a memorable experience.

The stop at Crawford Notch was a highlight of my trip. Getting off the train allowed me to explore the surrounding area, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and enjoy the stunning views. The break was invigorating and peaceful.

The Conway Scenic Railway is an underappreciated gem that deserves more attention. It provides a chance to disconnect from daily life and reconnect meaningfully with nature and history. Whether you’re interested in history or nature or just looking for a unique adventure, the Conway Scenic Railway offers something unique.

I cannot recommend this experience highly enough. It’s a journey that evokes a sense of wonder and nostalgia, leaving a lasting impression on all participating. I feel grateful to have been a part of it, and I highly encourage others to embark on this incredible adventure. Imagine experiencing it for yourself, as cruise lines now offer this tour for ships docking in Portland, Maine
