Marquesas Celebration Cruise

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine February 3, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

UNESCO has officially designated the Marquesas Islands as a World Heritage site. To commemorate the honor, Windstar Cruises invited three mayors of the French Polynesian paradise on a 14-day celebratory voyage.

In early 2024, Windstar began sailing to the remote island chain, which only welcomes a few thousand visitors yearly.

“We are honored to host the mayors of these incredible islands on board Star Breeze for this celebration,” said Stijn Creupelandt, Windstar’s vice president of hotel operations. “This designation is a testament to their work at preserving their culture and environment.”

The project worked out so well that another cruise is planned for March 27.

by Julie Bouchner February 3, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

This year, CroisiEurope, Europe’s largest river cruise operator, is proud to mark significant anniversaries: 30 years of cruising on the Rhône and 25 years in Venice. To celebrate these milestones, the company is offering exciting new promotions for select sailings.

Rhône Anniversary

In February 1995, CroisiEurope launched its first Rhône cruise from Chalon to Martigues on the MS Camargue. After three decades, they now operate four ships along the Rhône, providing itineraries that explore the stunning landscapes of Burgundy and Provence, including the wild Camargue and the majestic gorges of the Ardèche. Passengers can visit beautiful cities such as Arles, Avignon, Lyon, and Vienne.

Anniversary Offer: From April to August 2025, save $300 per person or enjoy no single supplement on seven- and eight-day Rhône cruises. Prices start at $1,906 per person, which includes all meals, drinks, excursions, port fees, and WiFi.

Venice Anniversary

CroisiEurope began its Venice operations in 2000 aboard the MS Michelangelo, which docks just steps from Saint Mark’s Square. Today, it remains one of the few operators permitted to sail into the heart of Venice. It offers cruises that unveil the city’s splendor and extend to historic towns like Mantua, Padua, and Verona.

Anniversary Offer: Enjoy up to 25% off or no single supplement on a seven-day Venice cruise departing between March and June 2025. Prices start at $1,039 per person, including all meals, drinks, excursions, port fees, and WiFi.

Exclusive Itinerary

Don’t miss out on a special three-night stay in Florence and Tuscany, followed by a seven-day cruise from Venice to Mantua on August 26, 2025, starting at $2,809 per person.

Petiscos, Pasteis, and the Prato do Dia

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine January 31, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Traditional Portuguese food is made up of a profusion of seductively mouthwatering options so deciding what to have takes time. Don’t worry though, you won’t go hungry while you work through the menu. Tables come set with a selection of olives, pats of butter, pate and bread, with diners only paying for the items they consume.

At lunchtime patrons linger over prato do dia, the daily set menu, while at night they debate the a la carte. Main meal portion sizes, called dose, are huge so don’t be afraid to ask for a half dose, unless you plan to share.

Oenophiles take note, the house wine in Portugal is usually unexpectedly good. Made by the owner’s uncle, cousin or other relative in their home village, many use indigenous grape varieties not available outside the country.

Bacalhau à brás

No guide to Portuguese food would be complete without an homage to bacalhau, the humble cod. Salted and sold in long wide sheets, its mild, succulent, flaky white flesh is extremely popular in Portugal. So much so you can eat it 365 days in a row and never have the same dish twice.

Bacalhau à brás is a staple. First, the cod is sautéed with onions, then shredded. Next, small pieces of fried potato are added in and eggs whisked through the lot, gently cooking until silky smooth. Chopped parsley and a handful of olives scattered over the top complete the dish.

Leitão assado

Leitão assado no forno, to give its full name, is a young suckling pig roasted in a woodfired oven. A coating of garlic and other seasonings is rubbed into the skin followed by constant basting during the cooking process to keep it moist and juicy. When done, the flesh is so tender it almost falls off the bone.

Cozido à Portuguesa

The first written recipe for cozido à Portuguesa appeared in the late 17th century but this thick hearty meat and vegetable stew most likely originated much earlier, when poor farmers made it from whatever was at hand. Today, the best versions combine beef, pork ribs and ears, smoked sausages like linguiça (spiced with paprika, chili, and garlic), assorted root vegetables, and cabbage, served with rice. It’s not for the faint of heart and best consumed at lunch followed by a nap, or at night after a long day of sightseeing.

Arroz de pato

Rice-based dishes are plentiful in Portugal, and arroz de pato, literally ‘duck rice’, is one of the stars. Pieces of duck are quickly pan seared then placed in a rich broth of onion, carrot, garlic, and.…

Ship Review: Silver Ray

by Jon Fleming January 29, 2025
written by Jon Fleming

It’s not easy to put the sun-drenched Greek Islands in the shade, but Silversea’s latest offering — Silver Ray — shines a new light on luxury cruising. Silversea took their ship design in a new direction with the introduction of the innovative Silver Nova in 2023, and Silver Ray’s launch this year continues this trend of offering a more contemporary look to the luxury sector.

These new ships follow a totally different layout from Silversea’s previous vessels — rather than all the bars and restaurants being aligned at the back of the ship, Silversea has opted for a horizontal layout of facilities being concentrated across Decks 4 and 5, plus the Pool Deck on Deck 10. It makes for a smoother flow, as you pass from bar to restaurant to theater, although the new layout has been a bit of an adjustment for some regular Silversea passengers — some commenting that it’s taken them a few days to get fully oriented.

Pool deck

Where the designers get top marks is in thinking outside the box, to come up with an asymmetrical design that positions the swimming pool on the side of the ship, rather than sticking with the traditional pool-in-the-middle orthodoxy. What this does is make the whole pool deck feel much more open, and gives the bathers a greater connection to the ocean (or port) directly alongside. In fact, it’s the constant views of sea and land that distinguish your time on Silver Ray — whether that’s from the glass elevators that run up and down the side of the ship; or from the large Jacuzzi with its solid glass wall that makes it a great place to watch a stunning sunset with a cocktail; or even from the saunas whose windows look out directly over the sea.

Radiant Places

Inside Silver Ray, there’s such a huge amount of striking original artwork decorating the public spaces, that to some extent it gives the ship the feel of an art gallery. This is complemented by a display of superb travel photography by long-term Silversea collaborator, the celebrated photographer Steve McCurry — a reminder of the exotic places that cruising can take you to.

Where other ships have to deal with the ongoing phenomenon of too many passengers reserving sun beds with towels, Silver Ray has plentiful lounging space (both inside and out), with so many hidden nooks and crannies that you can always find somewhere to hang out. So many hideaways in fact, that it can take days to discover new “secret” areas, and to decide on your favorite spot. The sense of space, of being able to get away from it all, is the overriding sensation.

Some long-term Silversea passengers have expressed a regret that, with its more contemporary feel, Silver Ray has less of a “Country Club” atmosphere than previous ships, where everyone tended to head to the same bar, and where socializing with other passengers was more of a ritual. That’s still available on other Silversea ships; and, of course, old favorites for meeting new friends remain — like on tour, or at the ever-popular afternoon trivia sessions, which alternate between hilarity and intense competition.

However, with a choice of 10 contrasting bars and lounges, each with its own distinct vibe, this is a ship where you can get to enjoy a different experience every night. During the daytime, the lively Arts Café acts as the hub of the ship, where everyone calls in for a coffee (or something stronger). In the evening, if you want a more social piano-bar experience, head to the busy Dolce Vita Bar for music and conviviality; but if you want to sample specialty cocktails with subdued lighting and unrivaled views, head up to the cool SALT Bar, where you can test the knowledge of the well-trained mixologists. For a more sedate atmosphere, the Shelter offers a great place for sophisticated Champagne cocktails, as you relax to live violin music; while for alfresco drinking cooling off warm evenings to the chilled-out sounds of a saxophone player, then the Dusk Bar off the back of the ship is another place to experience the sights and sounds of the sea beyond.

Silver Ray’s dining scene is similarly diverse. Of the included restaurants, the plush furniture and classy ambience of the Atlantide Restaurant (the closest that the ship has to a traditional Main Dining Room) has the upmarket feel you’d expect from Silversea; while the buzzy atmosphere and cool furnishings of the outdoor Marquee Restaurant has the mood of a trendy beach club on the Cote D’Azur — this is the perfect place to have a tasty pizza or steak grilled by yourself on a hot rock. (Of course, this being Silversea, where every guest need is catered to, those who have come to get away from any form self-catering whatsoever can get the chefs to cook it for them!) A taste of Italy, reflecting Silversea’s Italian roots, can be found at La Terrazza, but a firm favorite remains the Silver Note, which has the dimly lit feel of an old time jazz club thanks to the toe-tapping backing of a superb jazz duo — creating a mood so romantic that we even got to witness a tear-inducing marriage proposal on the dance floor.

In keeping with Silversea’s attempts to bring the atmosphere and tastes of the destinations that it visits right aboard its ships, Silver Ray takes full advantage of the line’s groundbreaking S.A.L.T. program (Sea and Land Taste). The ship’s bright SALT Kitchen showcases the flavours and recipes of the local area — here we sampled a selection of delicious dishes from the Eastern Mediterranean, while wines from lesser — known terroirs (like Greece, Turkey and Lebanon in this case), brought a few pleasant surprises. As part of this taste — immersion, passengers can even enjoy cooking lessons from expert chefs that showcase the highlights of the local cuisine. We joined a cooking class in the shiny new SALT Lab, donned our aprons and learned all about phyllo pastry, creating some delicious spanakopita and baklava. These are experiences that will definitely inspire us to bring the cuisines we experienced on the cruise back home with us.

Much to See

In the last year, Silversea has revamped its onboard entertainment with a combination of brand-new production shows and international guest entertainers who are flown in on a regular basis. The ship’s impressive two-story theater is a great place to see these shows, or to attend lectures that tend to concentrate on the local areas and issues around them. When the ship is as good as this, sometimes you need reminding that the destinations you’re visiting are pretty spectacular too!

With so many days in port (many of them staying in port quite late into the evening), Silversea isn’t particularly renowned for its vessels being late-night party ships; however, the ship’s resident DJ caters for those who want to dance after dinner in the Panorama Lounge, while the weekly deck parties can get pretty lively.

Silver Ray seems to be an indication that Silversea is perhaps attempting to target a slightly younger audience, who want to indulge in luxury lifestyles and sample the latest trends in cruising. With the relaxation of its traditionally formal dress codes into “elegant casual” most nights, there is definitely a more informal atmosphere on board. On shorter cruises, you will still see a few people in tuxedos and cocktail dresses on the “formal optional” nights (which tend to be once a week), however the majority of passengers seem to be opting for a smart casual look. This is now bringing Silversea into the range of “hand-baggage-only” cruisers — again, something that might help attract a younger crowd. At the same time, the ship’s eco-credentials, with its hybrid LNG propulsion system, will appeal to the environmentally conscious too.

Stellar Service

While the introduction of Silver Ray and Silver Nova represent a new direction for Silversea, some things have remained reassuringly constant. For many people, Silversea’s incredibly conscientious staff have always been the line’s greatest asset, and the quality of service is as impeccable as ever — waiters do their best to remember your dining preferences, bartenders serve up your favorite drinks before you even need to ask, and your dedicated butler strives hard to exceed expectations. It was difficult to resist the constant offers of in-room canapés from our butler; with thoughts of trying not to overdo it slowly weakening as the cruise progressed, he finally persuaded us to have some appetizers on our veranda. It really doesn’t get more decadent than eating iced caviar on your terrace with a chilled bottle of Champagne as the sun sets over the medieval walls of Rhodes Town. From start to finish, you feel like you’ve entered a world of luxury.

For those who are seeking to get a glimpse into the changing world of modern cruising, the new Silver Ray has been a fantastic addition to the Silversea fleet. If this is the future of cruising, the future is looking bright.

Join Cunard in Co-Creating the ‘Sea of Glamour’ Exhibition

by Julie Bouchner January 28, 2025
written by Julie Bouchner

Future generations risk losing important childhood memories, according to research by Cunard. In response, Cunard is launching a physical exhibition, curated by photographer Mary McCartney, to celebrate 185 years of ocean travel and preserve these memories.

MORE ABOUT THE STUDY

An international study reveals that 265 billion images are captured annually in the UK and US, with most remaining unseen on digital devices. Smartphones account for 97% of all photos, yet only 3% of people opt to store their memories in printed albums. This heavy reliance on digital storage could lead to a generational memory gap, as 72% of respondents believe future generations will lose memories without printed photos. Additionally, only 51% of adults feel confident that their photos will be accessible in 50 years.

While 75% of adults intend to preserve and share images of children, many have not considered it deeply (38%) or believe there is a lack of interest in those photos (33%). This trend jeopardizes the legacy of physical photos, with 53% of adults having deleted images due to storage issues and 39% having lost them when their phones broke, putting countless memories at risk. To address this, Cunard invites guests, employees, and celebrities to share their memorable images from its ships for the ‘Sea of Glamour’ exhibition, debuting at Liverpool’s Liver Building in May.

ABOUT  THE EXHIBITION

The exhibition will feature photos of Hollywood icons, musicians, politicians, and royalty from the Cunard archives alongside newly curated images from the public. Together, these will create a timeline of iconic moments celebrating nearly two centuries of transatlantic travel.

On the opening day, Mary McCartney will capture the final photograph for the exhibition, depicting Queen Anne‘s Icons in Liverpool.

Siân Wilks, Cunard Archivist at the University of Liverpool Library, said: “As a unique resource that captures Cunard’s unrivalled 185-year history, the Cunard archive is an incredible collection that is accessible to all. It is exciting to see how today’s events will shape the Cunard archive of the future and capture the stories of those connected to the brand”.

Katie McAlister, President of Cunard, emphasized the importance of this initiative: “For 185 years, our ships have been at the heart of unforgettable moments for millions of guests and crew. This is a chance to celebrate those memories and the stories they tell. By sharing your experiences, you’ll help Mary McCartney create something truly unique—an exhibition that brings Cunard’s incredible history to life for everyone to enjoy.”

The ‘Sea of Glamour’ will launch as a global exhibition, touring the world aboard the Cunard fleet to commemorate the 185th Anniversary.

To enter, send your digital photo to [email protected] along with your name, age, the ship, the date the photo was taken, a brief description of the photograph, and contact details by March 9, 2025.

Virgin Voyages’ Resilient Lady Makes Historic Debut in Cartagena, Colombia

by Porthole Cruise and Travel January 27, 2025
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Virgin Voyages’ Resilient Lady arrived in Cartagena, Colombia, on January 24 after departing from San Juan, Puerto Rico. This marks the first visit by the U.S.-based cruise line, underscoring Colombia’s growing importance in the global cruise sector.

Cartagena welcomed 2,469 sailors, making it the only Colombian stop on an 11-night itinerary that includes Aruba, Curaçao, and St. Maarten. This enhances Colombia’s maritime connectivity within the Caribbean. The sailors enjoyed tours of the walled city, cultural activities, and culinary excursions featuring Colombian cuisine.

“This is a key moment for Colombia,” said Carmen Caballero, President of ProColombia, the country’s promotion agency. “It is the result of years of collaboration with Virgin Voyages and other industry stakeholders. At ProColombia, we have tirelessly promoted the country’s maritime connectivity with the goal of solidifying Colombia as an attractive destination for cruise tourism. This achievement reinforces our position as a regional leader and is a victory for all Colombians.”

Virgin Voyages selected Cartagena as a key destination due to its rich cultural heritage, diverse gastronomy, and extended port stays of up to 18 hours, allowing sailors to experience the city’s vibrant nightlife fully. The cruise line has planned itineraries through 2026 and aims to expand its regional presence. The influx of cruise guests supports local businesses and drives economic growth, while the company offers free training for local suppliers to meet sustainability standards.

Lee Kayley, Virgin Voyages’ Manager of Shore Excursions, expressed his enthusiasm: “We are thrilled to bring Virgin Voyages to Colombia for the first time. Cartagena’s unique blend of history, culture, and vibrant atmosphere offers an incredible experience for our sailors. We look forward to fostering a lasting relationship with this beautiful destination.”

Liliana Rodríguez, Executive President of Corpoturismo, the tourism board of Cartagena, emphasized the collaborative spirit driving the city’s success: “Today, with four ships from three major cruise lines docked in our port and hosting nearly 23,000 tourists, Cartagena reaffirms its capacity, administrative commitment, and the synergy that defines our tourism ecosystem. The arrival of Virgin Voyages further solidifies our position as Colombia’s leading cruise destination.”

This milestone elevates the cruise industry and strengthens Colombia’s tourism sector, which is rapidly emerging as a global powerhouse. In 2024, Colombia welcomed over 6.6 million international travelers, reflecting an impressive 8.5% growth compared to the record-breaking numbers of 2023. This steady upward trajectory has positioned Colombia as the top destination for U.S. travelers in South America, further cementing its status as a global tourism hotspot.

Colombia’s growing tourism sector has earned its spots on The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Condé Nast Traveler’s prestigious travel lists, solidifying its reputation as a top destination. With a focus on sustainability and partnerships like Virgin Voyages, Colombia is poised for long-term growth and international recognition.

“The arrival today of over two thousand tourists from the United States to Cartagena reflects the robust and dynamic tourism between our countries. Year on year, Colombia stands out as a top destination for American travelers, welcoming over 1.4 million visitors annually. This milestone also highlights the confidence of U.S. and global tour operators in Colombia’s diverse offerings, further strengthening the connections that drive our economic and cultural exchange,” said Daniel García-Peña, Colombian Ambassador to the United States.
