written by Julie Bouchner

Holland America Line is now the first cruise line to be awarded the Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) certification, a commitment to serving fresh, sustainable and traceable Alaskan seafood. The certification is valid on all six HAL ships that sail to the Alaskan waters.

“Holland America Line has shared Alaska adventures with our guests for 75 years, and supporting sustainable fishing and local business is an important commitment for us,” said Gus Antorcha, president of Holland America Line. “We’ve pledged to buy and serve only local, sustainable, fresh seafood on Alaska voyages, and RFM certification is a crucial step in the commitment to sustainability that we share with our guests and fishing families of Alaska.”

RFM is a third-party certification program for wild-capture fisheries. The RFM logo is placed on every Alaskan fish the cruise line sources showing travelers the place of origin of the seafood product and informs consumers of the entire food production process.

“We applaud Holland America Line for its long-standing commitment to sustainable seafood and its hard work to become the first cruise line to offer RFM certified Alaska seafood,” said Tomi Marsh, Alaska seafood harvester and CSC RFM board member. “Holland America Line’s support for RFM not only highlights its dedication to sustainability, but also its dedication to promoting local values.”

A Cruiser’s Guide to Key West

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 6, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

One of the most popular ports for cruisers is the beautiful island of Key West. If you’re fortunate to be taking a cruise that makes a stop at this festive port in Florida, you are in for an unforgettable experience and maybe even the best key lime pie you’ve ever had!

As soon as your cruise ship pulls into Mallory Square in the heart of Key West, you will know you are somewhere special! The quaint streets with the Bohemian style architecture are rich in history and are home to a bustling live entertainment scene in the local bars and restaurants. The Conch Republic is filled with amazing sights to see, fun-filled activities to enjoy, and a great experience is to be had exploring charming old town Key West during your time in port.

Key West is truly a magical place to be! Here are some tips for getting around, top landmarks and sights to see, and exciting adventures to experience when you cruise Key West.

Spending the Day in Key West

Getting Around Town – Since your cruise ship is docked at Mallory Square – which is right in the middle of the action in Key West – the Island’s most popular attractions are just an easy walk or bike ride away. Another fun way to see the Island is to catch a ride on The World-Famous Conch Tour Train, which picks you up right at the cruise ship and takes you on a tour of all of the popular sights of the Island!  It’s a “hop on and off tour,” so you can see the sights at your leisure!

Beachin’ It – The closest beach to the cruise ship pier is located at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park. In fact, Key West’s most popular beach is located at the southern end of the park. There are plenty of fun in the sun activities including swimming, snorkeling, paddleboarding, and fishing. There is also a gift shop and restaurant with an ocean view if you’re looking for something to eat. Other local beaches include Smathers Beach on S. Roosevelt and Higgs Beach on Atlantic Blvd.

Visit Dry Tortugas National Park – Take a boat ride tour and explore Dry Tortugas National Park, a 19th century 100-square mile open water park with seven small islands.  World-famous for being the home of magnificent Fort Jefferson, azure blue waters, and unique coral reefs, Dry Tortugas National Park is a must-see while in Key West.

12 Can’t-Miss Places to Visit in Madeira

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 1, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

There are a lot of beautiful islands to explore in this world, but the Portuguese island of Madeira remains a hidden gem and cruiser paradise thanks to all it has to offer! From the vibrant city of Funchal where the cruise ships dock, to the rocky cliffs of Ponta de São Lourenço and the beach of nearby Porto Santo island, there’s countless places to explore when visiting this spectacular part of the world.

If you’re cruising to Madeira or visiting the island on an extended stay, here are 12 of the can’t-miss places to visit when you arrive!

Miradouro das Neves (São Gonçalo)

To the East of Funchal, the Neves viewpoint is one of the most popular spots to take in the view. Overlooking Funchal Bay, the viewpoint boasts 360-degree views of Funchal’s downtown. Only about a 15 minute drive from the cruise port, the viewpoint should be a stop for any cruiser or visitor to the island.

Mercado dos Lavradores

A popular meeting place for locals, the Mercado dos Lavradores, Funchal’s downtown farmer’s market, is a wonderful place to immerse yourself in the unique culture of the island. The market features local fruits, vegetables, fish, flowers and more, all sourced from around the island. It’s a great place to enjoy some of the island’s most popular cuisine like grilled beef skewers called espetada or a circular flatbread called Bolo do Caco.

Monte Palace Tropical Garden and Carreiros do Monte

Exotic plant lovers will not want to skip Monte Palace Tropical Garden in Funchal, a museum with a huge collection of plant life and art pieces for visitors to enjoy. There is also a gemstone collection with more than 1,000 pieces to view. The Carreiros do Monte are wicker sleds mounted by two runners who bring guests on a ride through the many streets of the Monte region just Northeast of Funchal.

Cabo Girão

For adventure-seekers, the skywalk of Cabo Girão is a must-see when visiting Madeira. Rising 580 meters above sea level, the glass skywalk is suspended over the cliff face, making for a thrilling experience! The spot is popular for hiking as well as paragliding from the very top of the cliffs. It’s one of the best places on the island for a really cool photo opportunity!

Curral das Freiras

Located in the heart of the island, Curral das Freiras is set in a mountain valley with peaks towering thousands of feet above. Known in English as the ‘Valley of the Nuns’, the history of this village is just as rich as the culture visitors can immerse themselves in. Isolated from the rest of the island via the mountains, visitors should make sure to visit during the annual Chestnut Festival.

Balcões – Ribeiro Frio

Another small village in the middle of the island, Ribeiro Frio is home to the famous Balcões viewpoint hike offering spectacular views of the Ribeira da Metade Valley. The region is a natural park and is a popular spot for locals and visitors alike thanks to beautiful hiking trails of varying difficulty.

Santana Houses

No trip to Madeira is complete without seeing one of the most unique features of the island’s history. Santana houses are traditional Madeira dwellings known for their triangular shape, straw roofs and many colors painted on the outside of the home. You can find the homes in Santana, a town on the island’s Northeast section about a 45 minute drive from Funchal.

Ponta de São Lourenço and Baía D’Abra

Found on the island’s Easternmost end, Ponta de São Lourenço is known for its towering seaside cliffs. It’s also home to the Baía d´Abra Viewpoint, which offers a unique look at the cliff sides and how they’ve eroded over the years of the ocean’s surf and wind. The region is also home to a number of seabird colonies, specifically the largest colony of Caspian Gulls on the island.

Porto Moniz

Tucked away in the Northwest corner of Madeira, Porto Moniz is a small, seaside village with some very unique geographical features to enjoy. The highlight of the village is naturally-forming seawater pools along the coast created by ancient lava flows. The seawater flows into them naturally when the tide comes in and they make for a great swimming spot on a hot day! The pools of Porto Moniz are about an hour drive from the cruise port.

Miradouro da Portela – Porto Santo

Another viewpoint worth exploring, but this time on the nearby island of Porto Santo, Miradouro da Portela offers gorgeous views of the surrounding mountainside and sea. There are multiple hikes in the area of varying difficulty so everyone can experience this magnificent view of the entire length of the island and the harbor.

Miradouro das Flores  – Porto Santo

Also found on neighboring Porto Santo, Miradouro das Flores on the Southern tip of the island, is a fabulous lookout point with stunning views of the island and Porto Santo beach. It takes between two and three hours to reach Porto Santo by ferry from Madeira and is a must for those who love spending the day on secluded beaches!

Porto Santo Beach

Speaking of the beach, no trip to Porto Santo is complete without visiting Porto Santo Beach, the most popular and picturesque beach on the island. More than five miles long and with golden sand along the island’s Southern coast, Porto Santo Beach is the perfect place to spend a day catching some rays while watching the turquoise waves roll in!

Porto Santo Beach

So, have we convinced you to visit Madeira yet? Whether you love hiking, exploring new cultures, eating great food or spending the day at a spectacular beach, there’s something on the archipelago of Madeira for everyone.

The next time you’re booking a cruise, why not choose one with this amazing island on the itinerary? You’re going to fall in love with cruising to Madeira and we can’t wait to hear all about it!

These Historic Florida Facts Will SHOCK You

Mike and Jeff started “HISTORIC FLORIDA – The Original” as a Facebook group in 2012, now they are up to 204,000 members. The main focus of the group is to show historical photos of Florida from when the camera was invented until and just before Walt Disney arrived in Central Florida around 1971.

Why that cutoff date? No particular reason, that’s just how the’ve always done it! It’s the point in Florida’s history when drastic change began to happen, and things associated with “Old Florida” began to disappear. In addition to photos, other things like maps and postcards are also welcomed in the group.

written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Royal Caribbean Group is taking big steps forward when it comes to connectivity at sea. The cruise conglomerate has announced they’re updating all current and future fleet with SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet access. Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Silversea Cruises ships will all receive the upgrade and all future cruise ships will have it built in.

According to Royal Caribbean, the fleet-wide upgrade will be complete by the first quarter of 2023. After undergoing a trial run onboard Freedom of the Seas, Starlink performed well enough to prompt the fleet-wide change.

“Our purpose as a company is to deliver the best vacation experiences to our guests responsibly, and this new offering, which is the biggest public deployment of Starlink’s high-speed internet in the travel industry so far, demonstrates our commitment to that purpose,” said Jason Liberty, president and chief executive officer of Royal Caribbean Group. “This technology will provide game-changing internet connectivity onboard our ships, enhancing the cruise experience for guests and crew alike. It will improve and enable more high-bandwidth activities like video streaming as well as activities like video calls. Using Starlink is one more example of our continued focus on innovation and excellence for our guests, our crew, the communities we visit and our shareholders.”

What is Starlink?

Currently providing internet to 40 countries around the world, Starlink is a system of satellites built by private space exploration company SpaceX, which was founded by Elon Musk.

“Royal Caribbean Group selecting Starlink to provide high-speed, low-latency internet across their fleet will make their passengers’ getaways even more luxurious,” said SpaceX Vice President of Starlink Sales Jonathan Hofeller. “We couldn’t be more excited to work with Royal Caribbean Group to ensure travelers at sea can stay connected with a great internet experience.”

Her set list included hits like “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Roar,” and “Firework.”

“It was so much fun to sprinkle some fairy godmother dust on Norwegian Prima and send her on her way to sail the high seas,” said Katy Perry. “I always appreciate a family vacation and a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so I was happy to wish all the vacationing guests a happy bon voyage!”

The First of Six Prima-Class Ships

Norwegian Prima is the first of six ships NCL has planned for its new Prima-class vessels and the first impressions have been stellar according to the man in charge.

“With her stunning design and unique offerings, Norwegian Prima is in a league of her own,” said Frank Del Rio, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. “As the industry’s most spacious new cruise ship featuring ‘only-available-on-Prima-experiences,’ she is continuing NCL’s legacy of industry firsts.
