by Porthole Cruise and Travel January 31, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

The 15th MedallionClass ship to enter the Princess fleet, Discovery Princess will make her way from Italy to Los Angeles for a series of Mexican Riviera and California Coast cruises in March and April 2022 before sailing up the Pacific coast to begin a season of seven-day Alaska cruises from Seattle.

The ceremony was attended by John Padgett, President of Princess Cruises, Captain Gennaro Arma, and Luigi Matarazzo, the General Manager Merchant Ships Division of Fincantieri.

“Today marks a significant milestone for Princess Cruises as we officially take ownership of the spectacular Discovery Princess,” said John Padgett. “We extend our immense gratitude to our long-time and trusted partners at Fincantieri, the shipbuilders of all six of our Royal-Class vessels with Discovery Princess and look forward to welcoming our first guests to experience the beauty of the ship when they embark in just a few weeks.”

written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Happy Friday, cruisers! It’s time for the Cruise Deal of the Week and today we’ve got an extra special set of sailings on a brand new ship from MSC Cruises!

MSC Seascape Bookings and Itineraries

Coming in December 2022, the brand new MSC Seascape will sail the Caribbean from PortMiami and the cruise line has opened bookings with some perks thrown in. Check out the itinerary options below!

MSC Seascape will offer two different 7-night itineraries from PortMiami:

  • Eastern Caribbean: Calling at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve and Nassau in The Bahamas, San Juan in Puerto Rico, and Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic
  • Western Caribbean: Calling at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, Cozumel in Mexico, George Town in the Cayman Islands and Ocho Rios in Jamaica

There are multiple dates to choose from, but the cruise leaving December 11, 2022 starts at just $459. The ship calls on Ocean Cay Marine Reserve, Nassau, San Juan, and Puerto Plata over 7-nights.

According to Rubén Rodríguez, the President of MSC Cruises USA, there’s a lot to love about the new ship.

“MSC Seascape will be the latest example of our dedication to North America and the Caribbean, joining a legacy stretching back to 2017 when we brought the first of our Seaside class ships to Miami. MSC Seascape and her sister ships are specifically designed for Caribbean cruising. Our guests love the ships’ unique mix of cutting-edge technology and outdoor space that gets them closer to the sea, and they tell us MSC Seashore was the best yet when she arrived late last year. Our newest ship will offer even more to love on board and along the way. Every itinerary calls at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve to give our guests the chance to soak up the natural beauty of the Bahamas and learn about our efforts to conserve and rebuild the surrounding ecosystem.”

More Cruise Lines are Making the Vaccine Booster Mandatory

by Porthole Cruise and Travel January 26, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

More cruise lines are changing their vaccine policy to include booster shots and they’re most likely paving the way for the rest of the industry to follow suit. COVID booster shots are all the rage these days as the CDC has announced them an effective way to retain protection against the COVID-19 virus.

Cruise lines like Silversea, Azamara, Oceania and more have updated their protocols to require the COVID-19 booster shot for guests who are eligible starting on March 1st, or in one case, as early as this week.

Vaccine Requirement Changes at Azamara:

Vaccine Requirement Changes at Silversea:

Vaccine Requirement Changes at Oceania:

Fellow traveler and friend of the magazine Gary Bembridge noted a change to Oceania Cruises’ protocols for his upcoming cruise departing from Panama. As of this Friday, everyone cruising with Oceania would need “3 (three) doses, with the exception of Janssen from Johnson & Johnson, for which the application of 2 (two) doses is considered complete”.

Having a booster shot is rapidly becoming something required for travel. A number of my future cruise bookings now require it (sometimes driven by port). To enter #Panama to join my @OceaniaCruises cruise, requires 3rd shot to be counted as vaccinated & avoid quarantine pic.twitter.com/kEkfw6E17C

— Gary Bembridge (@garybembridge) January 26, 2022

Will the COVID-19 Vaccine Booster be Mandatory on All Cruises?

When the COVID-19 first became available, some lines jumped out ahead of the pack when it came to requiring them on board. Eventually, however, all cruise lines came to the conclusion that vaccine requirements were in the best interest of guest health and safety.

Will cruise lines be quicker to adopt a mandatory booster protocol than they were the initial shots? We would expect so and sooner rather than later.

Have you gotten your booster yet? Let us know in the comments.

You Can Now Book the Upcoming Carnival Jubilee

by Porthole Cruise and Travel January 25, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

You’re still going to have to wait until 2023 to step on board, but now you can at least book your trip on board the upcoming Carnival Jubilee. Carnival Cruise Line opened bookings on their website for their third Excel-class cruise ship with itineraries in the Western Caribbean starting in November of 2023. The ship will homeport in Galveston, Texas.

Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy explained that opening bookings today of all days was very much intentional.

“Since it’s National Plan for Vacation Day, it’s the perfect time to open Carnival Jubilee for sale and give our guests another incredible choice for their cruise vacation with the opportunity to visit some of the most beautiful ports in the Western Caribbean,” she said.

Last year when the ship was announced, Duffy stated that their relationship with the region played a big factor in homeporting their newest ship in Galveston.

“We love Texas, and Texas loves Carnival. Galveston is one of our most popular homeports, and we draw guests to Texas from across the Midwest, southwest and western U.S. Bringing a brand-new ship to a market is a big commitment, and it’s one we gladly make for the greater Galveston community and entire region,” said Duffy. “Carnival was the first cruise line to offer year-round cruising from Galveston in 2000, and we have continued to grow our presence and support of the Port of Galveston’s expansion, so we are thrilled to bring our brand-new Carnival Jubilee to Texas and the greater southwest region,”

About Carnival Jubilee

Like sister ships Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration, Carnival Jubilee will operate on liquefied natural gas and include innovations like the BOLT roller coaster, more dining venues, redesigned suites and staterooms, and a three-deck atrium with ocean views that doubles as an evening entertainment venue.

Trance Continental: America’s Roads & Rails

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine January 24, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

The Transcontinental Railroad, also known as “the Overland Route,” changed the way America thought about itself. Once that golden spike was hammered into place in 1869, there was an easy way to get from sea to shining sea — carried by a magical machine through the purple mountain majesties and across the fruited plain. In fact, the words to “America the Beautiful” were written after Katherine Lee Bates took a train from Massachusetts to Colorado in the 1800s and was awed by the grandeur of the landscape she saw on either side of those gleaming steel rails.

Well, that experience is still there for those savvy enough to book a ride on one of North America’s most scenic railways. Many of today’s trains emphasize everything that’s pleasant about traveling by rail: the ability to get up and walk around, top-class service, the gentle rocking of the cars, and the ever-changing spectacle outside the window.

Dover Harbor

Operating out of Washington, D.C., the Dover Harbor is one of the last heavyweight Pullman passenger cars still in regular service. This classic car is as much of an attraction as anywhere it passes through. It was built in 1923 as a combine-baggage-library car, but rebuilt in 1934 to include a kitchen, a lounge, and double bedrooms. Today, under the auspices of the D.C. chapter of the  National Railway Historical Society, those fittings and furnishings gleam like new. The car sleeps 10 but accommodates 24 daytime guests, and can be booked by the public for day trips and overnights near its home. But because it’s fully compatible with modern main line railways, this railcar can be chartered for longer trips anywhere Amtrak travels, with white-jacketed porters and stewards serving fresh meals and turning down the berths every night. Recent journeys have taken Dover Harbor through Virginia’s Tidewater region bound for Colonial Williamsburg, on overnights to Philadelphia, and longer tours to cities as far afield as Boston, Chicago, Denver, and New Orleans.

Pudding Creek Express

Northern California’s famous “Skunk Train” rides for 7 miles along the Pudding Creek Estuary, a 75-minute round trip between quaint Fort Bragg and the parkland of Glen Blair Junction. The area is a haven for hikers and beachcombers because of its natural beauty — and the line features a Redwood Route into the Noyo River Canyon which the more intrepid adventurer can ride aboard a two-person electric railbike. For a more relaxing ride, the Skunk Train travels through Mendocino County’s majestic redwood forest with a bar car selling snacks, soft drinks, beer, wine, and spirits, and an open car for full immersion in the outdoors without any pedaling. Expect to see ospreys, blue herons, lush wetlands, and primeval woodlands.

by Porthole Cruise and Travel January 21, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

If you spent the week shoveling snow and waiting patiently while your car windshield defrosts, nothing will cheer you up quite like booking your next cruise vacation. This Spring, Alaska’s first full cruise season since 2019 is going to be full steam ahead and the deals right now are unbelievable. We’ve been talking about Port of Seattle’s preparations for cruising’s comeback and those sailing from the Emerald City are in for a real treat.

It’s time for the Cruise Deal of the Week!

7-Day Alaska Inside Passage Cruise

Holland America Line is one of the top Alaska cruise providers and they’re positioning their ship Westerdam in Seattle all summer long cruising North through the Inside Passage. The ship leaves from Port of Seattle before spending the day in Puget Sound then spending a day at sea before arriving in Stephens Passage. From there, the cruise calls on Juneau, Hubbard Glacier, Sitka, Ketchikan and Victoria in British Columbia before returning to Seattle a week later.

The best part? There are 20 dates to choose from! The best deal we saw was leaving Sunday May 15, 2022 with interior rooms starting at just $503 or an oceanview for less than $100 more. Make sure you check the list of dates and prices because some are considerably more expensive! Holland America is throwing in a bunch of perks just for booking like up to $1,700 cash back, free drinks, free wifi, included specialty dining, shore excursions and even stateroom upgrades. Book soon and you can even get 50% of your second guest and kids sail free on select itineraries. Holland America Line is also giving out $75 in onboard credit per stateroom for a limited time!

Costa Cruises is an Official Sponsor of the 2023 Ryder Cup Golf Tournament

by Porthole Cruise and Travel January 20, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Costa Cruises announced today that they’ve signed on to be an official sponsor of the 2023 Ryder Cup golf tournament being held for the first time in Italy at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome.

To celebrate the partnership, the cruise line has put together a new “Cruise & Golf” program, with two cruise itinerary packages and 15 international courses to choose from.

“As the world’s leading international cruise line, Costa is thrilled to be the official cruise line sponsor of the Ryder Cup, the world’s preeminent international golf tournament,” said Scott Knutson, vice president of sales and marketing for Costa Cruises North America. “With our new package, golfing guests can play a different course every day, and when they aren’t playing, they can explore the Med on an excursion or relax on board. It’s a win-win for golfers, or, as we now say in Italian — a foro-in-uno!”

Starting in May 2022, guests on board Costa Smeralda’s seven-day Mediterranean itinerary will get the chance to play courses in Italy, France and Spain throughout the cruise. Cruisers even have options when it comes to which courses they want to play.  Rome has five courses to choose from; Savona, Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca each have two; and Marseille has four. That’s enough where you could take back-to-back weeklong cruises and never play the same course twice.

The Birdie Package vs. The Eagle Package

Costa has two options for cruisers depending on how much golfing they want to do. The Birdie package gives access to three courses during their cruise and the Eagle package provides access to four. Both include priority disembarkation and embarkation daily, equipment stored and insured for the duration of the cruise, a welcome kit in the cabin, a snack basket, private transfers to and from the golf courses, and a golf kit consisting of a set of golf balls, lanyard with card holder, a golf bag tag and branded cap. Additional perks include early breakfast times to allow priority disembarkation, choice of dinner time and reserved seating in the restaurant, and other special onboard offers.

About the Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup is perhaps the most unique tournament in golf as it pits 12-member teams from the United States and Europe against each other over 3-days of golf. The winning team gets all the glory as they have for the past 42 tournaments over the past 91 years. Previous tournaments in Europe have been held in the United Kingdom, France and Spain, but never Italy despite Italian golfers appearing in seven Ryder Cup tournaments throughout its history.

Through a mobile app, travelers will be able to get where they need to go around South Florida via the train as well as a fully electric Brightline-branded fleet of vehicles.

With stations in West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Miami, the train is a great option for cruisers who want to enjoy a pre-cruise stay in South Florida or if you fly into a different city than your embarkation port. The train will soon connect with Orlando and Tampa as well, meaning Florida is set to be more accessible than ever before.

Carnival Pride Godmother Tamara Jernigan Welcomed on Carnival Miracle

by Porthole Cruise and Travel January 19, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

It’s great to reach for the stars in a metaphorical sense, but Tamara Jernigan took the advice literally – logging more than 1,500 hours in space as a NASA astronaut and astrophysicist.

After retiring from NASA in 2001, Jernigan was invited by Carnival Cruise Line to serve as the Godmother of Carnival Pride. Alongside then Carnival President Bob Dickinson, Dr. Jernigan named Carnival Pride in a ceremony at Port Canaveral on January 7, 2002.

Now, 20 years later, Dr. Jernigan once again found herself cruising with Carnival when she joined the guests and crew of Carnival Miracle for a New Year’s cruise. While on board, she met with the ship’s female officers who presented her with a beautiful gift that included a current photo of Carnival Pride, as well as a photo of her in front of the ship with Chairman of Carnival Corporation Micky Arison.

Dr. Jernigan also made an appearance at the ship’s military appreciation gathering which is held on every Carnival cruise to recognize and honor the courage, commitment and service of members of the Armed Forces and their families. Tamara also attended a Question and Answer session with the cruise director, where guests had the opportunity to ask questions about what it’s like in space or anything else on their mind.

CDC Adds 22 Countries to travel Warning List

by Porthole Cruise and Travel January 19, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention let their conditional sail order expire over the weekend, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they think it’s safe to travel. In fact, going off their most recent announcement, you’d think it wasn’t safe to travel at all. The embattled federal agency added 22 countries to its level four travel advisory list on Tuesday due to rising levels of COVID-19, specifically the Omicron variant that’s causing travel disruption all around the world.

The CDC now has over 100 countries on their level 4 list and urges Americans to avoid travel at all costs, even for the fully vaccinated.

The new countries on the list include popular Caribbean cruise destinations like St. Lucia, the British Virgin Islands, Turks and Caicos, Bermuda and the Bahamas. Other countries of note to find themselves on the list include Israel, Australia, Egypt, and Argentina.

Prior to the update, the level four list was already well-stocked with places to avoid, according to the CDC. Most of Europe found themselves on the list already along with Canada, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Norway, Sweden, Finland, just to name a few.

Cruising Vs. Travel

If it sounds like the CDC is sending mixed messages about travel, you aren’t wrong. Earlier in January, Director of the CDC Dr. Rochelle Walensky spoke in a Senate hearing and praised the cruise industry for their compliance, but this week urges people to avoid Australia, a place still closed to international travel.

“I think the Conditional Sail Order and the fact the industry has stepped up and is now interested in exceeding the compliance with the Sail Order without the order necessarily being in place is a real testimonial to how well that has worked,” she said to the group of Senators.

RELATED: WORLD TRAVEL & TOURISM COUNCIL SAYS TRAVEL REBOUNDED IN 2021

Confidence is high that cruise lines can sail without CDC health and safety oversight because they’ve already been doing it for well over a year. Several cruise lines resumed operation in late 2020 and early 2021 outside of the United States to great success, and that was well before COVID-19 vaccines were available to the public.

What do you think about the CDC’s new travel warning list? Let us know in the comments!

American Cruise Lines Reveals New Ship Design

by Porthole Cruise and Travel January 18, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

American Cruise Lines announced this morning a new fleet of go-anywhere cruise ships designed specifically for the U.S. market. Project Blue, the codename for the newbuilds, will more than double the nation’s current capacity for domestic coastal cruises when the 12 hybrid catamaran sister ships arrive. The first two will debut in 2023 offering East Coast itineraries and will be named American Eagle and American Glory—namesakes of the company’s first two small U.S.-built ships.

According to Charles B. Robertson, President & CEO of American Cruise Lines, the goal was to build a vessel that can literally go anywhere.

“Project Blue started as a design challenge to create a boat small enough for New England harbors and stable enough for the Alaska Inside Passage, with a draft shallow enough for the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. These boats can run almost anywhere, and because there will be 12 of them, they will be deployed all over the United States,” he said.

All 12 of the hybrid ships will be built by Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Salisbury, MD with the first two already under construction and due for delivery in 2023. At 241 feet long and 56 feet wide, each Project Blue ship will have the space to accommodate 109 passengers and 50 crew. Each will feature the hybrid catamaran design that enables both shallow draft access and stable sailing along lakes, rivers, bays, and America’s coastline.

“Together with Chesapeake Shipbuilding, we built the first modern riverboats in the country. Now we are proud to introduce another new ship design for domestic exploration. American has specialized in small ship cruising for over 30 years, and continuing to innovate and expand the possibilities for cruising close to home is central to our mission,” Robertson continued.

Studio DADO of Miami, FL lent their expertise to the elegant, modern decor found on board, including the 56 staterooms ranging from large standards to suites and singles. Each ship will also showcase an expansive forward lounge with 270 degree views

Delos Divinities

by Katie Jackson January 17, 2022
written by Katie Jackson

This mystical Greek island was thought to be the birthplace of the gods. To this day, it’s illegal for humans to be born or die there!

“Don’t leave anything but footprints,” says your tour guide. “Also, don’t die.”

The latter warning isn’t an attempt to lighten the mood after a 30-minute crossing that can be brutal if the Aegean is angry that day. It’s the law.

Since 500 B.C.E., dying on the island of Delos has been illegal. Why? Don’t ask the natives. There are none. Being born on Delos is also banned. Both acts are prohibited because Pisistratus, Hippocrates’s son and ruler of ancient Athens, thought the privilege should only belong to Greek mythology’s favorite twins.

Believed to be the birthplace of Artemis and Apollo, Delos was almost as sacred as Delphi. Legend has it Leto, the twins’ Titan mother, sought refuge on Delos after being impregnated by Zeus. Artemis, goddess of the moon and hunt, was born first. Nine days later, her twin brother Apollo arrived. God of the sun and almost everything under it, Apollo was responsible for light, poetry and art among other things. Despite their shortcomings — Apollo’s weakness was nymphs and Artemis had a pride problem — the twins were both card-carrying members of the 12 Olympians.

The Parthenon — the most visited site in Greece — receives more than one million annual visitors. Delos receives 100,000 — all day-trippers coming from other islands or cruise ships. Still, it’s not surprising. This Central Park-sized island in the center of the Cyclades is accessible only by boat. Its dozen residents are Ministry of Culture employees: guards, archaeologists and conservators tasked with preserving ancient structures and preventing the island’s other residents — stray cats who tourists love to name — from using 2,500-year-old Doric columns as scratching posts. Today, Delos is a UNESCO World Heritage site. To anyone living in the Mediterranean around 500 B.C.E. it was the center of the world.

Abandoned and Mysterious

You can’t spell desolate without Delos. And from the boat, Delos looks desolate. Save for the lone palm tree, where Leto is thought to have given birth, there is no shade from the merciless sun. The sacred lake has been bone dry for centuries. Only the most stubborn grasses and flowers, including a yellow daisy called the “curse of Delos,” grow on this granite mass two miles from Mykonos. From the boat, the island is best described as bleak. But up close? Delos is “mesmerizing, awe-inspiring, and vibrant” says Maria Chatziioannou. Her company, Delos Tours, offers guided tours from Mykonos twice daily. Sofia, a guide for Kids Love Greece, describes the island as “luminous, mysterious, and fascinating.”

What Delos lacks in natural beauty, it makes up for in historical significance. After repeated attacks by the Romans and looting by pirates, Delos was abandoned around 69 B.C.E. In 1873 the French Archaeological School of Athens began excavating the island. Since then, the marble bones of a thriving civilization have slowly emerged. Unlike their Acropolis counterparts in Athens, a city which had continuous habitation, the ruins visitors see on Delos are more likely to be restored, not recreated.

First inhabited in 3,000 B.C.E. Delos peaked in population around 90 B.C.E. Somehow a place considered too pure for human birth and death found itself home to an ethnically diverse community of 30,000. Due to its status as a free trade port, Delos was the Mediterranean’s ground zero for exchanging goods and slaves. Substantial support from kings helped boost its economy, too. As the birthplace of Apollo — the mouth of Zeus and god of the oracles — Delos was Greece’s golden child. It was always a barren rock, albeit one worthy of riches withheld from other Greek islands.

Island Sights

A tour of Delos (and it’s best to have a local guide who can bring the outdoor museum to life) usually begins in the impressive amphitheater. Built of imported marble around 250 B.C.E., it held 6,500 people. For perspective, the Roman Coliseum fit 50,000. The tour continues with temple-hopping and a trip to the commercial district, once a maze of shops and stalls teeming with thousands of merchants and traders.

Another highlight is Cleopatra’s — a villa marked by a few towering columns and two headless statues depicting the wealthy couple who once lived there. Further evidence of the Delians’ affluence can be seen in the generous foundations of neighboring three-story mansions. These homes boasted state-of-the-art plumbing. Captain Kate McCue sails on to success

by JIll Weinlein January 14, 2022
written by JIll Weinlein

During a meet and greet session aboard the Celebrity Edge in June 2021, Captain Kate McCue shared with passengers her journey in becoming the first American female captain of a modern American mega cruise ship.

She fell in love with the sea after taking a cruise with her family. When teenage Kate told her father that she wanted to be a cruise director someday, he replied, “Baby girl, you can do anything, including running a ship.”

She went on to make “someday” happen. Enrolling in California State University Maritime Academy, she earned a degree in business administration then worked on a variety of sailing vessels for nearly 15 years. Captain Kate rose up the ranks to become the first American commanding officer on Celebrity Summit. Next, she was captain of Celebrity Equinox, before Celebrity Edge was launched three years ago.

“With hope, you can and will rise again,” she said, while sharing stories about her last voyage on Celebrity Edge before the pandemic shut down cruise travel. “It was a history-making and barrier-breaking sailing on March 8, 2020, as the first cruise ship ever to be ‘wo-manned’ by an all-female team of officers on the bridge and across the ship.”

One week later, as the last passenger disembarked, Captain Kate and her crew members were told to stay aboard.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., the parent company of Celebrity Cruises, quickly formed a Healthy Sail Center, with experts at the CDC, and local and international medical and scientific minds to guide the cruise line in the development of comprehensive protection protocols for everyone on board. “They ran 35 different return-to-sea scenarios to prepare and be ready to sail,” she said.

Celebrity Edge was the first cruise ship to depart Port Everglades in 16 months. As Captain Kate backed the ship out to sea, blasting the horn, locals lined up along the port’s channel, cheering, waving, and holding up signs wishing everyone aboard a safe journey.

As the ship set sail on a 7-night cruise to Costa Maya, Cozumel, and Nassau, the ship visited ports that haven’t seen a cruise ship with passengers since the shutdown.

And “someday” is here again for Captain Kate as Celebrity Cruises recently announced that she will become the captain of the newest, largest, and most luxurious ship, Celebrity Beyond. The anticipated debut is April 2022.

7-Day Mexico Cruise

The cruise line is on the cusp of taking delivery of their newest ship Discovery Princess and we can’t wait for the debut in Los Angeles.

On March 27, 2022 the ship will set sail from Los Angeles on a 7-day Mexico cruise with calls on Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta. Inside rooms start at just $378 and a suite is under $1,000 for those who want to really get the most out of their cruise vacation. New NCL Ship Norwegian VIVa Coming in 2023

by Porthole Cruise and Travel January 12, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Norwegian Cruise Line announced the name and sailing location of their newest Prima-class cruise ship!

Norwegian Viva will debut on her maiden voyage in June 2023 sailing the Mediterranean with four unique homeports: Lisbon, Portugal; Venice (Trieste) and Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy; and Athens (Piraeus), Greece.  Following summer in the Mediterranean, the ship will reposition to the Caribbean for sailings from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The ship is nearly identical to sister ship Norwegian Prima, and is the second of six Prima-class ships scheduled to be built by the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, Italy.

A Premium Experience on Norwegian Viva

According to president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line Harry Sommer, the ship sets the standard for a premium cruise experience.

“Norwegian Viva sets the standard in the premium segment, illustrating our commitment to pushing boundaries in four main areas: wide open space, service that puts guests first, thoughtful design and experiences beyond expectation. We have taken everything our guests love to the next level with this brand-new class of ships designed with them in mind,” he said.

Luigi Matarazzo, the General Manager Merchant Ships Division at Fincantieri shipyard, spoke on the relationship between NCL and the shipyard.

“Norwegian Viva, the second of six Prima Class vessels being built with us, reinforces the great collaboration between Norwegian Cruise Line and Fincantieri,” he said. “We were extremely satisfied that Norwegian Prima, the first of the new class, earned record-breaking bookings and we are excited to see how Norwegian Viva will live up to her sister ship. As we proved our resilience during these challenging times, this announcement represents another testament to Fincantieri´s global leadership role in the cruise sector.”

About Norwegian Viva

At 965 feet long, 142,500 gross tons and space for up to 3,219 guests at double occupancy, the ship is slightly smaller than the previous builds from Norwegian Cruise Line, but all the same quality dining, entertainment and relaxation found on board. The smaller size offers the highest staffing levels and space ratio of any new cruise ship in the contemporary and premium cruise categories and largest variety of suite categories available at sea.

Like previous new builds, Norwegian Viva will feature The Haven by Norwegian, NCL’s ultra-premium keycard only access ship-within-a-ship concept with 107 premium suites with a sundeck, an infinity pool overlooking the ship’s wake and an outdoor spa with a glass-walled sauna and cold room.

Other features will include the fastest freefall drop dry slides at sea with The Rush and The Drop and the largest three-level racetrack at sea with the Viva Speedway. There’s also Ocean Boulevard, a 44,000 square foot outdoor walk way which wraps around the entire ship;  Indulge Food Hall featuring 11 varieties of eateries; The Concourse outdoor sculpture garden; expansive pool decks and infinity style pools at Infinity Beach and Oceanwalk, showcasing glass bridges above water.

Environmental Alternative Technology

The first two Prima-class vessels from Norwegian Cruise Line will feature alternative tech aimed at reducing environmental impacts. Advancements include a NOx reduction system (SCR) which filters out sulfur oxides up to 98% and nitrogen oxides up to 90%, ensuring the vessels meet Tier III NOx compliance. Further, the ships will be equipped with an Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS), an Advanced Wastewater Treatment System to treat and clean all wastewater to meet international standards and Cold Ironing functionality to connect to onshore power grids to further reduce emissions while in port.

The hull art was designed by Italian graffiti and sculpture artist Manuel Di Rita, commonly known as “Peeta” and Rockwell Group, SMC Design and Miami-based Studio Dado contributed to the architecture and design.

Port Seattle is Cruising’s Gateway to Alaska

by Porthole Cruise and Travel January 11, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Late in the summer of 2021, well over a year after the last cruise ship call on Alaska, the Last Frontier began welcoming cruisers back to its shores through the Port of Seattle. Seattle is the gateway to Alaska for cruisers thanks to its vibrant downtown and amenities like Port Valet which make getting to your cruise ship even easier.

If an Alaska cruise is on your bucket list for 2022, Port of Seattle and the rest of the Emerald City are ready to welcome you back and help you get the most out of your Alaska cruise vacation!

Cruising’s Return to Seattle

July 2021 saw the return of cruise embarkations from Port of Seattle and through the rest of the summer, ships from some of the most notable lines in cruising set sail with course to Alaska. Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises and more made the most of a shortened 2021 season and all are ready to make 2022 one of the best ever for Pacific Northwest cruising.

The port’s Cruise Healthy campaign helped reopen the port with a community-first approach to health and safety. Masks are required inside the cruise terminals as well as on public transportation. The port installed new safety features like a new air filtration system, protective barriers, and touchless fixtures in bathrooms.

What to do in Downtown Seattle

What makes Seattle one of the best embarkation cities for cruise ships is the cruise terminal’s location along Puget Sound in the heart of Seattle’s lively downtown area. From the Space Needle to Pike Place Market and everything in between, Seattle is well on its way to being one of the most underrated vacation cities in the country and cruisers are seeing that firsthand when they embark from Port of Seattle.

Cruising in the summer means you can get into vacation mode before your cruise with a hike through Discovery Park or catch a Seattle Mariners game before dinner at one of Downtown Seattle’s premier restaurants.

Port Valet Luggage Service

Now that cruising is back in the Emerald City, Port of Seattle is encouraging cruisers to take advantage of their free airport Port Valet service. The service means cruisers don’t have to carry their luggage all over the city while they wait for their flight and instead, their bag arrives conveniently at the baggage carousel after the flight home. On the last night of your cruise, you’ll receive your airline boarding passes and special luggage tags from the cruise line. Set your bags outside and your luggage will be securely transferred directly from the cruise ship and checked in with your airline all the way to your destination airport.

It’s easy to enroll in the Port Valet service online and makes for a much easier debarkation day after your cruise from Seattle!

NCL Redesigns Latitudes Rewards Program Tier System

by Porthole Cruise and Travel January 11, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Chances are you didn’t make much use of Norwegian Cruise Line’s Latitudes Rewards Program in 2020 or 2021. But there’s some good news for frequent NCL cruisers who are looking to make full use of the program in 2022.

The cruise line has enhanced the rewards program with a newly redesigned tier structure that will make it easier for cruisers to sail their way through the tiers and enjoy all the benefits that come with. Cruisers earn one Rewards Point for every night they sail, with an additional point per night for suite and The Haven by Norwegian guests, as well as for members who book a Latitudes Rewards Insider Offer. Guests are automatically enrolled in the program once they return home from their first cruise.

Updated Latitudes Rewards Program Tiers

The updated rewards program is now made up of seven tiers, including a brand-new Diamond status as well as Sapphire, which replaces the previous Platinum Plus tier. Almost all tiers now feature a reduced points requirement to unlock each new status level, allowing cruisers a faster rise to the top. For example, Silver status is now available to guests with 20 Rewards Points, compared to 30 previously, allowing guests who book a 10-day voyage in a suite to automatically reach Silver status after a single cruise.

Not only will cruisers enjoy a quicker journey to the top tier, they’ll also have access to a range of new onboard experiences and special offers tiered according to their status, including a one-time free cabin upgrade, Wines Around the World tasting experience, Sail & Sustain Mixology experience, member cruises, internet package discounts and the novelty signature tier-status pins.

Other onboard perks to being a Latitudes Rewards Program member include members-only cocktail parties, complimentary specialty dining and laundry service plus priority tender and disembarkation, as well as enjoy discounted shore excursions, duty-free shopping, photo packages and spa treatments. Not a bad haul for just taking a vacation!

First Impressions: World Navigator

by Porthole Cruise and Travel January 10, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

The world has so much to explore. Perhaps that’s why the team at Atlas Ocean Voyages decided to attach such a global moniker to their first luxury adventure cruise ship. Built for the world’s most remote locales, the 196-passenger World Navigator has the toys to do adventure cruising the right way, but also the opulent amenities and guest-first approach to compete with the top brands in the small-ship, luxury cruising space.

World Navigator arrived slightly behind schedule thanks to the pandemic, but after spending more than a week on board during the ship’s maiden voyage through the Greek Islands, it’s clear the vessel was well worth the wait. By pairing a sleek new ship with an itinerary which includes some of the world’s most famous islands, Atlas Ocean Voyages has the recipe for an exquisite cruise vacation.

Small Ship, Big Potential

First impressions matter when it comes to a brand new ship and World Navigator gets off on the right foot. The first thing you notice on board is the elegant, art deco designs and glossy, dark wood paneling from floor to ceiling. It’s a call back to cruising’s heyday when ships were full of tuxedos and evening gowns. Public spaces are ample and feature unique themes and contemporary furniture with a chic style that definitely feels retro.

However, despite the decor, World Navigator is a very laid-back ship with a casual approach to luxury. You’re far more likely to pass your fellow cruisers in the hallways dressed for exploration for a day ashore than you are to see them in a gown. It feels upscale, but there’s no pressure at all from the staff to conform to that idea.

As with most small ships, when on board, you’re never far from anywhere. Of the six decks, guests spend the most time on Four and Seven; the rest are mostly staterooms. Four is home to Porto, the main restaurant; the grab-and-go option Paula’s Pantry; the Atlas Lounge; and L’Occitane spa and fitness studio. Deck Seven is where guests go to jump in the pool or one of two whirlpools. It’s also home to the Dome Lounge, the place to go in the evenings to mingle with your fellow guests.

I found myself making great use of Paula’s throughout the cruise, though I very much enjoyed sitting down for a full three-course lunch. Between the cruise-sanctioned shore excursions and the opportunity to explore a place like Old Town Mykonos or the remains of Akrotiri on Santorini meant a sandwich and fresh-squeezed juice to go was perfect as I strolled down the gangway on to my next adventure.

Speaking of adventure, World Navigator wasn’t built to be a leisurely cruiser. This polar-class vessel comes complete with a heli-pad, Zodiac boats, Jet Skis, and all manner of kayaks and paddleboards for guests to enjoy. There’s also a space at the bow of the ship on Deck Five called Water’s Edge which boasts heated benches, designed to be the perfect place to watch aquatic life when the ship cruises to icy waters.

Dining at Porto and 7Aft

Guests have options when meal time arrives on World Navigator, though not quite as many as other ships. The main dining room, Porto, is gorgeous upon first glance thanks to dark wood paneling and abstract carpet and furniture patterns that are elegant without being over-the-top or gaudy.

Through a set of automatic doors on the far wall of the restaurant, guests find what may be the best place to enjoy a meal on board World Navigator (weather permitting) — Porto’s outdoor section. Lined with wood planking, from the floors to the tables and chairs, the outdoor dining area was where hungry guests gravitated for an alfresco dining experience. The deck’s 180-degree views are much appreciated when anchored somewhere like the immense Santorini caldera at sunset.

Welcome to 2022 and the new look Porthole Cruise and Travel!

No, we don’t have flying cars or robot butlers, but that’s okay! What we do have is cruise deals and lots of them. If you’re fixing to make 2022 a year that makes up for the past two, we’re right there with you. Why not start off your year with a cruise deal from Norwegian Cruise Line that will have you basking in the warm glow of the Caribbean sun!

5-Day Western Caribbean Cruise

When Norwegian Sky sets sail from PortMiami on Wednesday March 2, 2022, cruisers on board will have saved a ton on their vacation thanks to the deal NCL is running right now. The ship calls first on Key West before a call on Cozumel the back across the Caribbean to Great Stirrup Cay, the cruise line’s private island resort. Inside rooms are going for just $319 per person and balcony rooms are just $779.

Perks for booking soon include up to $1,700 cash back, 70% off your second guest, 3rd and 4th guests sail free (select sailings), all 5 free at sea perks, a $50 shore excursion credit, and even $25 on board credit. What’s better than a cruise vacation? A cruise vacation with all of those savings on the table!

The 77k ton Norwegian Sky accommodates up to 1,928 passengers and was one of the first ships to call on Cuba when the island was briefly open to cruising in the mid-2010’s.

If you’re looking for your next cruise vacation, this might be the trip for you!
