“Up to two days spent in the magnificent cities of either Venice or Athens will be a fantastic prelude to our guests’ seven-night cruises in the East Mediterranean and should be especially attractive for those that will fly into Italy and Greece for their summer holiday so that they can really make the most out of their trip,” said Achille Staiano, Vice President of Global Sales for MSC Cruises. “Similarly, when we roll out the ‘Stay & Cruise’ program later this year in the USA we’ll see many more Europeans join our cruise ships to take advantage of having a truly memorable time in Miami and Orlando, plus from summer 2023, New York will prove a strong pull for those who want to explore the Big Apple prior to their cruise.”

Holland America Line Will House Ukrainians Refugees on Board Volendam

by Porthole Cruise and Travel April 1, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Holland America Line has teamed up with the Netherlands and the City of Rotterdam to accommodate Ukrainian refugees on board Volendam as they need a place stay after leaving their homeland due to the ongoing war. The ship will dock in Rotterdam for three months to provide a temporary home for approximately 1,500 Ukrainians, part of a larger commitment from the Netherlands to accommodate 50,000 people who fled the war in their homeland.

Holland America Steps Up to help

“We are in a unique position to accommodate the immediate need for food and housing, so we felt it was very important to work with the City of Rotterdam and charter this ship,” said Gus Antorcha, president, Holland America Line. “Our company was founded in Rotterdam around the mission of helping immigrants find a better life. So today we’re proud to be a small part of a similar mission for Ukrainians who have tragically been displaced.”

Those staying on board the ship will have private stateroom access, meals, housekeeping services, use of public spaces, fitness facilities, internet access and everything else. There are 650 crew on board to assist.

“We are known for our service and hospitality, and our team is ready to welcome our new guests as we would welcome guests into our own home,” said Captain Ryan Whitaker. “It will truly be an honor for us to make Volendam a comfortable and caring environment for these families who have been through so much.”

Volendam will be docked at Merwehaven, a cargo port on the north side of the River Maas in Rotterdam. Remaining docked will ensure Ukrainian families can transit easily to and from services in Rotterdam.

Volendam‘s New Schedule

Rather than return to service on May 15th cruising Norway, the British Isles and Iceland from Rotterdam, Volendam will return to active duty on July 3, 2022. Three sailings have been cancelled as a result.

“We are very sorry for the inconvenience this will cause to guests booked on the three canceled cruises,” Antorcha said. “We hope they understand the unprecedented nature of this situation and why we felt it was important to work with the government on this initiative in support of these families in need.”

Holland America Line isn’t alone in their pledge to help. Carnival Corporation’s chairman Micky Arison and his wife Madeleine also announced a pledge of $3 million to charities helping Ukrainian refugees.

“We stand for peace and our hearts go out to everyone whose lives have been upended by the invasion of Ukraine,” said Arnold Donald, president and chief executive officer of Carnival Corporation & plc. “We have crew members from 145 countries and we sail with guests from nations around the globe, so we feel deeply the impact of this humanitarian crisis and we join many others in supporting relief efforts.”

Nambia’s Skeleton Coast by Land Cruiser

by Kevin Revolinski March 31, 2022
written by Kevin Revolinski

The Namib Desert — which includes the 975 miles of Namibia’s Atlantic coastline — is at least 55 million years old and within its northernmost and remotest section lies the 6,500-square-mile Skeleton Coast National Park. Its Wilderness Area limits visitors to about 60 four-night permits per year. Each costs $5,000 USD for up to 14 people for a specific date, and no two permits are closer than two days to each other, so you are truly the only ones in the park.

We were six couples in six Land Cruisers with popup tents mounted on top plus spare tires and abundant jerry cans of fuel and water in back. Remote Recreation, an independent safari planner, had lined up vehicle and gear rentals, hotel reservations before and after, and most importantly, our two guides: Marius van Zyl and Gabriel Ndipulalye, who navigated the route, narrated the desert world, handled emergencies, and cooked camp meals. They also brought a portable toilet — we packed out everything we packed in. Driving 25-90 miles per day, we parked in a circle at campsites only marked by GPS coordinates.

From seaside town of Swakopmund, we drove a rough tarmac road 120 miles north to a park office to sign in. We passed through a skull-and-crossbones gate and continued another 150 miles, past the last stop for fuel at Terrace Bay, to Möwe Bay where the official road ended. We let some air out of the tires and plunged into the desert.

The first night we camped along a turbulent sea. A frigid, relentless wind from the north held our tents at full sail, and we ate dinner around a fire behind a canvas windbreak between two vehicles. We rocked to unsettling sleep, wondering what awaited.

I had imagined an inward journey, hypnotized by a vast empty world of sand. Reality was anything but. We’d drive along the seashore: waves thundering into foam; whale skeletons, turtle shells, or even shipwrecks scattered on the beach; the huge colonies of seals lounging or playing in the surf.

by Porthole Cruise and Travel March 30, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

With the first full Alaska cruise season in years set to begin, Princess Cruises has announced a new dining experience for their Alaskan cruise itineraries on board six ships this Spring.

The “Wild for Alaska Seafood” program is an industry first, according to the cruise line, with an extensive menu rotation of Alaska seafood dishes, along with destination-inspired cocktail experiences—including flights of Alaska spirits sourced from local distilleries—inventive cocktails such as “Creamy Cinnamon Moonshine,” “Glacial chilled Martinis,” and hand-picked, premium wine pairings to go with Alaska seafood dishes.

“We take our role as the leader in Alaska cruising seriously and as such we’re always looking for new ways to enhance our guests’ experience, both on board and ashore, while helping them gain a deeper appreciation of this incredible cruising region,” said John Padgett, president of Princess Cruises. “Guests are going to love these one-of-a-kind dishes that showcase the unique culinary offerings that add an exciting new dimension to our Alaska vacations.”

“When it comes to cruising in Alaska, more people choose Princess than any other cruise line, and now we’re making the experience more authentic and memorable with fresh new seafood choices and culinary events not found anywhere else,” said Rudi Sodamin, head of culinary arts for Princess who spearheaded the initiative. “We created our exclusive ‘Wild for Alaska Seafood’ program to celebrate its rich fishing heritage and fascinating local culture, all while enriching our guests’ adventure as they experience and explore The Great Land. Our goal is to showcase Alaska’s deliciously diverse seafood as well its history allowing guests to truly immerse themselves in this awe-inspiring natural wonderland.”

Additionally, ships’ specialty restaurants, including the Crown Grill steak and seafood restaurant and the classic Italian trattoria Sabatini’s, will offer “Wild for Alaska Seafood” menu inserts featuring appetizers like salmon carpaccio and choices of pan-seared, poached, pan fried or grilled  wild Alaska halibut or Copper River salmon. “Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy a whole new range of Alaska seafood regardless of where they’re dining that evening,” Sodamin continued.

Sustainability is another focus with the new program as Princess developed the new “Wild for Alaska Seafood” program in partnership with Pacific Seafood, Alaska Seafood, and Alaska Leader Seafood, all of which have an abiding commitment to environmentally responsible practices and are among the best-managed, most sustainable fisheries in the world.

“It is our responsibility to serve our oceans through an unwavering commitment to sustainability, being stewards in our local communities, and leaders in sustainable fishing practices,” said Frank Dulcich, president & CEO of Pacific Seafood. “We are proud to partner with Princess in a mission that aligns with ours in serving sustainable, wild Alaska seafood, and the healthiest protein on the planet.”

Celebrity Cruises Launches All-Inclusive Photo Project

by Porthole Cruise and Travel March 29, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

A new project from Celebrity Cruises is working to  to change the meaning of “all-inclusive” in the travel industry. The new campaign utilizes the world’s first  ‘open source’ travel image library in an effort to help address the lack of diversity in travel marketing imagery.

The All-Inclusive Photo Project (AIPP) is a collaboration between the cruise line and a host of acclaimed photographers like Annie Leibovitz; Giles Duley, an English documentary photographer and a triple amputee; Naima Green, a Black, queer New York-based photographer; and Jarrad Seng, an Australia-based photographer, filmmaker and creative director of Malaysian-Chinese descent.

“For far too long, ‘all-inclusive’ in the travel industry has meant everything on your vacation is included in one price. We set out to challenge this conventional thinking by imagining the phrase through the lens of others,” said Celebrity Cruises President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo. “What Annie and all of the talented artists involved in this project have captured so beautifully, is that for vacations to really live up to the marketing moniker ‘all-inclusive,’ then they should start by using images that are inclusive of all, not just a few.”

“We want our marketing to represent how the world looks, and what we experience on our ships daily, as guests and crew from all walks of life work and play together to create a really special onboard environment,” she continued.

“As global brands, we have a powerful platform to act as a catalyst of positive change. We know we have more work to do and we hope we inspire others to join us on this important journey. By leveraging our collective travel industry might, we can begin to make travel marketing truly ‘all-inclusive,” said Michael Scheiner, Celebrity Cruises’ Chief Marketing Officer.

Sustainable Cruising to an Eco-Friendly Future

High-Speed Hybrid Ships

Visitors to London — and citizens of the U.K. capital city — now have a new way to cruise quickly to sites up and down the Thames aboard Uber Boat by Thames Clippers. The service, which already runs the largest fleet on the river, will be operating hybrid high-speed passenger ferries between Tower and Battersea Power Station piers. Inside Central London, the new river ships will rely on electric engines, while outside the urban center that electric power will be recharged by biofuel engines which also provide sustainable, renewable power for getting sightseers and commuters where they need to go.

The first two of the quiet, twin-hulled vessels will start carrying up to 231 passengers each in fall of 2022 and spring of 2023.
“We’re looking ahead with this hybrid design, ensuring easy conversion to green hydrogen or another renewable energy source,” says Uber Boat by Thames Clippers co-founder and CEO Sean Collins. “It is the next step in our strategy to net-zero and, ultimately, tailpipe zero.”

All Hands on Deck for the Climate

Greece-based operator Variety Cruises has become the first cruise line to join “Tourism Declares Climate Emergency,” a group dedicated to keeping our favorite destinations (and the rest of the world) as safe as possible from the ravages of a changing climate.

“Climate change is real, and we acknowledge that, as a cruise line, we must work even harder to protect our planet,” said Variety Cruises CEO Filippos Venetopoulos. “We want to leave behind a world for our children’s children, and their children, too. As the first cruise line globally to join Tourism Declares Climate Emergency, we are taking an important step to lead by example in our industry. Nobody can afford to look away any longer.”

The company has launched a fully transparent, year-long plan to lower carbon emissions while keeping up initiatives like ethical food sourcing and having no single-use plastics, monitoring diesel consumption, further developing their beach clean-up initiatives, while adhering to the most stringent policies on waste management.

Signatories to Tourism Declares commit to five actions: develop a decade-long ‘Climate Emergency Plan’ within the next 12 months, update on the plan’s progress each year, meet the need to cut global carbon emissions to 55 percent below 2017 levels by 2030, encourage suppliers and partners to make the same declaration, and advocate for change towards carbon-free tourism.

Ice For Champagne

Environmentally aware Norwegian line Hurtigruten recently held a traditional christening with a twist, replacing the bottle of bubbly with Arctic ice for the naming of battery-hybrid ship MS Fridtjof Nansen.
The world’s northernmost naming ceremony took place at latitude 78 ̊ North in Longyearbyen, Svalbard. Two godmothers, environmental advocates Hilde Fålun Strøm and Sunniva Sørby, crushed a chunk of ice against the hull in place of the more customary wine.

Although it might seem very on-trend for a line as into sustainability as Hurtigruten, the eco-friendly ritual actually has roots going back more than a century. The two godmothers quoted polar explorer Roald Amundsen, who said, as he christened his ship Maud in 1917, “It is not my intention to dishonor the glorious grape, but already now you shall get the taste of your real environment. For the ice you have been built, in the ice you shall stay most of your life, and in the ice, you shall solve your tasks.”

Make the Island of St. Kitts Your Next Escape

by Porthole Cruise and Travel March 24, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

As the Caribbean begins to open back up again, one island is making it even easier for travelers who are looking to escape to a tropical paradise. St. Kitts is leading the charge when it comes to the Caribbean tourism comeback thanks to a set of new travel rules for fully vaccinated travelers that remove the mandatory quarantine period and let you get out and start exploring the island the same day you arrive.

In a testament to the island’s recovery efforts, St. Kitts Minister of Tourism Lindsay F.P. Grant was even recently named Caribbean Tourism Minister of the Year in the Caribbean Journal’s 8th annual Caribbean Travel Awards. His leadership and the resilience of St. Kittians were major factors in tourism returning to the island so abundantly according to editor Alexander Britell.

“The past year was defined by abundant tourism success as we saw the vast majority of the Caribbean roaring back this year, with the highest-volume tourism in history for most destinations,” Britell said. “Minister Grant’s leadership in navigating this tumultuous landscape for St. Kitts and Nevis has been a bold statement to the world that the Caribbean is the most resilient place on earth and cannot be defeated, taking every challenge and using it to power a new future.”

That’s great news, because St. Kitts has a lot to explore! From the spectacular hiking trails of Mount Liamuiga to the pristine beaches of Cockleshell Bay and everything in between, St. Kitts and her neighboring island of Nevis are the best  escape you could ask for. Immerse yourself in the history of colonialism, taste your way through cuisine inspired by the flavors of the island, enjoy a day of pampering at one of the many luxury resorts and hotels, St. Kitts has it all!

St. Kitts

Spend the day on a St. Kitts beach | | Photo: St. Kitts Tourism

Most islands in the Caribbean can say they have beautiful beaches, but St. Kitts stands out among the rest. With colors that range from the black sand beaches in the north – remember, the island was formed by a volcano – to the soft, golden-grey coral sand on the Southern coast, no two are the same. Whether you’re looking for a spot to escape or just need some rest and relaxation, a beach on St. Kitts is calling your name.

Frigate Bay in central St. Kitts has two unique beaches that visitors will love. North Frigate Bay Beach faces the Atlantic and features the best quality sand, straight to Instagram scenery and is perfect for a long relaxing stroll or snorkeling among the close-to-shore coral gardens. Did we mention the water temperature never gets below 74 degrees? That’s a vacation we can get behind!

St. Kitts’ Best Hiking and Exploring

Escaping the grind of daily life means spending as much time outside in the sunshine as possible and there’s no shortage of activities in St. Kitts. One of the first things people notice when they visit is the towering Mount Liamuiga, a stratovolcano that last erupted nearly 2,000 years ago. It’s the highest point on the island and home to some of the most incredible views for hikers. The sides of the mountain are full of lush rainforest foliage and the views from the very top will leave you speechless.

St. Kitts

Brimstone Hill Fortress and National Park | Photo: St. Kitts Tourism

In fact, St. Kitts seen their rainforests increase to nearly 25% of the island in recent years, making it one of the best places in the Caribbean for nature lovers. One of the best things to do is find a local guide who can bring you to some of the best hiking trails on St. Kitts and help you better understand some of the local flora and fauna.

Another great place to get out and explore is Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, a fortress and UNESCO World Heritage site which dates back to the late 1600’s. Located high up on the Western shore of St. Kitts, Brimestone Hill offers spectacular ocean views, particularly at sunset. Today, the fortress is a museum teaching visitors about European colonial expansion and more St. Kitts history.

St. Kitts’ Top Resorts

For those looking for a vacation that exceeds the rest, let one of the many luxury hotels and resorts on St. Kitts meet your every need. Hotels like the Park Hyatt St. Kitts, Montpelier Plantation & Beach and the Four Seasons Nevis are the best of the best when it comes to high-end amenities, service and cuisine. There’s no better feeling than waking up in the morning in a gorgeous hotel room with stunning ocean views just outside on the balcony.

St. Kitts’ Current Travel Requirements

International travel can be tricky these days, so St. Kitts has clearly outlined their health and safety policy when it comes to COVID-19 travel requirements.  The Federation of St. Kitts & Nevis is currently open for ONLY fully vaccinated travelers. Exemptions are made for citizens and residents of the islands and children under 18 with fully vaccinated parents or guardians. As of now, nearly 75% of adult residents have received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, one of the highest vaccination rates in the Caribbean.

Don’t wait another minute for your next vacation, book your trip to St. Kitts today!

CBS Orders New Series THE REAL LOVE BOAT

by Porthole Cruise and Travel March 23, 2022

The iconic television series The Love Boat brought millions of Americans along for the cruise of a lifetime when it aired back in the 1970s and U.S. network CBS is hoping to recreate that magic with a new series coming in 2022.

“The Love Boat’ has been synonymous with the Princess brand for more than 45 years since the world was introduced to glamour and elegance of the Princess experience,” said John Padgett, president of Princess Cruises. “We look forward to millions coming aboard our iconic ships as we are expecting you on THE REAL LOVE BOAT.”

Unlike the original scripted series, this version, called, THE REAL LOVE BOAT, is a matchmaking show where contestants compete to find love. Destination dates, challenges and surprise singles will test the couples’ compatibility and chemistry. Like the original series, the crew members including “captain” and “cruise director” will play pivotal roles in the matchmaking and navigation of the romantic (and sometimes turbulent) waters ahead.

THE REAL LOVE BOAT

After a month at sea, only one winning couple will make it to the final port and take home a cash prize plus a once-in-a-lifetime trip courtesy of Princess Cruises, the series’ exclusive cruise line partner. Production on the series will begin this summer in the Mediterranean.

“‘The Love Boat’ is a timeless, romantic concept with universal appeal, and we’re excited to reimagine this popular series for audiences in two different countries,” said George Cheeks, president and chief executive officer of CBS, and head of global content strategy for Paramount’s free-to-air networks, including Network 10. “On the heels of NCIS: SYDNEY, today’s announcement is another example of our global franchise strategy to use our rich intellectual property and vast international footprint to develop new content for viewers around the world.”

Now that cruising is back in full swing, it’s great to see one of the most iconic cruise brands getting some time to shine!

“Audiences really connected with the fun and escapism of ‘The Love Boat,’” said Mitch Graham, senior vice president, alternative programming, CBS. “The iconic series embodied the many possibilities of people making new, meaningful connections. Reimagining it as a dating show with competition, adventure and romance makes THE REAL LOVE BOAT an ideal fit for our schedule and viewers.”

Don’t Skip the Art Auction on Your Next Cruise

by Porthole Cruise and Travel March 21, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Have you ever heard someone say cruising has something for everyone? That expression has never been more apt as modern ships of today are a dazzling combination of theme park, 5-star hotel, Michelin-starred restaurant and oh yeah, it moves, too!

If you’re less interested in waterslides and laser tag, one of the most underrated activities on a cruise vacation is the art auction. Most mega ships of today have a dedicated gallery of paintings, sculptures and etchings from some of the world’s most popular artists of today.

When it comes to art on a cruise ship, there’s one name cruisers recognize; Park West Gallery. With decades of experience, Park West Gallery oversees countless auctions on board cruise ships each year from major brands and on itineraries all over the world. Their knowledgeable and courteous gallery curators who operate the galleries and host the auctions at sea are invaluable resources both seasoned collectors and those new to art alike.

Founded in 1969, Park West Gallery is the most trusted name in cruise ship art. They’ve assisted well over 3 million guests over the years learn more about art, how auctions work and even helped them find a work of art that resonates. The gallery’s goal isn’t just to curate auctions, but also educate and help people gain an appreciation for the arts. Park West Gallery is happy to help assist and educate those who are just beginning their journey towards art ownership. As a special offer for cruisers, Park West Gallery is letting guests pre-register for the art auctions on board their next cruise for a special free gift and a $100 art credit they can use during the event.

Cruise Ship Art Auction

How Does an Art Auction Work?

At first glance, art auctions can be a little intimidating! Auctioneers command the room as bids emerge from the crowd and it may come off as just gibberish at first, but it’s actually the auctioneer controlling the auction. When the last bid comes in, the auctioneer ends the auction and it’s on to the next work of art! Park West Gallery curates art from a number of unique styles and mediums; oil painting, watercolors, acrylics, drawings, etchings, carvings, statues and more so there’s a wide variety of works to bid on.

If you’re interested in attending, visiting the gallery prior to the auction is recommended. That way, you can take a good, long look at the works on display and decide if there’s something you like. This is also an excellent opportunity to take advantage of the helpful and experienced gallery curators. They can point you in the right direction if you’re generally interested in art or have questions about a specific work of art or artist.

Park West Gallery

Does My Cruise Line have Park West?

For a limited time, Park West Gallery is offering their best perks every just for attending the art auction on your next cruise! The gallery is giving guests the opportunity to pre-register for the auction on their next sailing in exchange for $100 bid credit and a free gift on arrival. Pre-registering is fast, simple and a smart idea for those looking to add to their personal art collection.

If you’re going on a cruise soon, there’s no downside whatsoever for pre-registering. There’s no obligation to bid on anything! You can sit, enjoy a complimentary glass of champagne and watch the often fun and exciting action that is a live auction. Even if you’re not sure about making an art purchase, sitting and watching a fast-paced auction with a complimentary glass of champagne is something new and different for most of us. Day@Sea: Electric Expedition

by Lola Méndez March 18, 2022
written by Lola Méndez

Hurtigruten’s MS Roald Amundsen is the world’s first hybrid-battery-powered cruise ship. The ship is named after the Norwegian explorer who became the first person to cross Antarctica and reach the South Pole. In 1882, at 10 years old, Roald Amundsen daydreamed about electric ships. Today, his namesake ship honors his pioneering legacy by being the most sustainable ship to offer voyages to Antarctica.

The Rolls Royce engine switches between low-sulfur diesel and battery power that provide a combined power of 1.35 MWh. While the lithium-ion battery, developed by Corvus Energy, could operate the ship for about 30 minutes, it isn’t utilized alone. Instead, the batteries are used for “peak shaving” to get the maximum amount of power from the fuel. The ship’s innovative pointed bow and wave-piercing narrow hull also decrease drag, making MS Roald Amundsen more fuel efficient. Designed by Espen Øino, it’s one of the most eco-friendly cruise ships in the world.

The engine’s hybrid operation has lowered CO2 emissions by 20 percent. Water used to cool the engine system is then upcycled to heat the ship’s showers, hot tubs, and infinity pool. As with all Hurtigruten ships since 2018, the vessel is also free of single-use plastic.

MS Roald Amundsen made its maiden voyage, an Antarctic expedition, in 2019. While the ship’s capacity is 528 people, voyages to Antarctica that include shore visits are allowed a maximum of 500 people on board. Those trips stopped during the COVID-19 pandemic and resumed in 2022.

Science-First Voyages

Ship Details

The sleek ship embodies luxurious Scandinavian design using regional granite, oak, birch, and wool rooted in the Scandinavian concept of hygge—comfort and coziness. The ship’s carpets feature patterns of ancient Viking runes. Nordic dining options include the Lindstrøm fine dining restaurant on Deck Nine and both Aune the main dining hall and casual dining at Fredheim on Deck Six. After-dinner drinks can be enjoyed in the Explorer Lounge with panoramic views on Deck 10.

Cabin inside MS Roald Amundsen, decorated in grey and beige, comfortable and contemporary. The spacious cabin suites have comfortable beds, lounge areas, generous closet space, and bathrooms. All cabins are outside and half of the accommodations have private balconies. The Aft Corner Suite offers a private hot tub on a wrap-around deck and the XL suite is a one-bedroom with a separate living room.

On Deck Seven is the wellness center, a respite for guests between excursions, with a selection of salt scrubs, facials, and massages. It’s located across the hall from the gym equipped with free weights, yoga mats, and cardio machines. A running track is on Deck 11, which also serves as an observation platform. Deck 10’s large co-ed sauna boasts floor-to-ceiling windows allowing guests to enjoy Antarctica’s epic landscapes as they relax in the warmth. Just outside are two hot tubs and an infinity pool.

The Norwegian company, which currently visits 250 destinations in over 30 countries, has a rich expedition heritage dating back to 1896. Part of that maritime legacy includes providing transportation to scientific researchers. The state-of-the-art Amundsen Science Center on Deck Six features high-tech gadgets and equipment including microscopes for analyzing field samples of rocks, fossils, and biological specimens.

Scientists actively conduct research in the center and, as a part of the citizen-science program, they welcome guests to observe and discuss their findings.  The center features museum-style exhibits on Antarctic wildlife and daily educational lectures from scientists covering a diverse range of topics.

“As a leader of responsible tourism, we bring travelers to various parts of the world in the most sustainable way to increase awareness of unique and critical environments while also allowing scientists to conduct their research free of charge and do scientific dissemination at the same time as guests on board get to learn from this research,” says Dr. Verena Meraldi, the cruise industry’s only chief scientist. “The research we’re supporting will contribute to creating new guidelines and regulations to protect wildlife in remote and fragile environments.”

Wildlife Observation

The Expedition Team is made up of scientific researchers, marine biologists, ecologists, glaciologists, and nature guides who linger on the two-level, indoor/outdoor observation deck accessible from the science center. They’re happy to share their wildlife and geological expertise with curious guests and thrilled to share information about aquatic life such as penguins, seals, and whales in real time while observing them in their wild habitat from the deck. The hybrid engine generates less noise pollution, thus reducing the negative impact on marine animals and fostering better wildlife observation.

First of its Kind Research

Aboard the 18-day sailing to Antarctica in February 2022, an all-female team of California Ocean Alliance (COA) research biologists was conducting the most robust marine sound research to date in one of the most fragile ecosystems on Earth. “With COA we’re working on finding solutions to minimize the impact on wildlife,” Dr. Meraldi says.

Kiirsten Flynn, Chloe Lew, and Liah McPherson collected acoustic data of baleen whales singing, drone photography, and biopsy samples of whales’ skin and blubber to evaluate the animals’ health, population growth rates, food sources, and stress levels. Lew is a bioacoustic marine researcher who places an acoustic buoy in the water, which is attached to a hydrophone which sinks 10 meters (33 feet) deep. “We’ve recovered humpback whale contact calls and moans. They’ll call one another when they’re coordinating foraging. Those calls travel far because of the low frequency,” she says.

The scientific research reveals whales’ behavior near ships and provides critical information to cruise lines on how they can adapt to minimize interference with whales. “We collect acoustic data of ambient noise levels in the soundscapes in the Antarctic which is a critical environment marine mammals use to carry out foraging, breeding, navigation, and communication. The environment is changing due to climate change and increased human activity. These baseline measurements of ambient noise are crucial in establishing the correct management decisions for ocean noise and sea policies,” Lew says.

Viking Cruises Naming Ceremony Paris March 2022

Viking Cruises Names Eight New Longships in Paris

by Porthole Cruise and Travel March 16, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

What sets a great cruise ship naming ceremony apart from just a good one?

The Eiffel Tower looking on certainly helps.

Along the slate-colored stripe of water know as the Seine during a crisp winter day in Paris, Viking Cruises named four new river ships (the other four in Amsterdam) in a special ceremony attended by Chairman Torstein Hagen, the eight new Viking Godmothers, representatives from Viking and a host of cruise and travel media, including yours truly.

Viking Fjorgyn, Viking Radgrid, Viking Skaga and Viking Kari sat dutifully by at the stunning Pont de Grennelle in the heart of Paris, all built specifically for the Seine and this particular port. At 125 meters, the four meet the maximum length requirement, unlike the too-long 135 meter older Viking Longships which call down the river at nearby Le Pecq in St. Germain-en-Laye. The other four, Viking Egdir, Viking Gersemi, Viking Gymir andViking Hervor were named at the same time via video conference from the Netherlands.

Update from Viking Chairman Torstein Hagen

Prior to the ceremonies, Viking Chairman Torstein Hagen held a presentation for the media in attendance on board Viking Kari where he gave an update on the brand to the media in attendance. Along with updates on the future fleet (five new ocean ships are confirmed with possibly 4 more!), the eight new ship Godmothers and the upcoming adventure ship Viking Octantis. Hagen also announced during the presentation that masks would become optional for Viking guests starting April 1, 2022.

He also spoke on Viking’s 25 years in the cruise space and how proud he was to welcome the new Godmothers to the Viking family.

“As we mark 25 years of sailing the iconic waterways of the world, it is always a proud day when we welcome new ships to our fleet and offer more opportunities for curious travelers to explore the world in comfort,” said he. “Today we are especially pleased to honor eight talented and accomplished individuals as godmothers of our newest river ships, and we look forward to the start of another season of European river voyages.”

The Newest Viking Cruises’ Godmothers

Each Godmother stepped up to the row of red buttons and after a blessing, sent a bottle of Aquavit smashing against the side of their ship. The list of Godmothers, their accomplishments and their ships are below!

Alma Deutscher, Godmother of Viking Gymir – A musical phenomenon, Alma captivates the classical world with her talents as a violinist, pianist, composer and conductor, and at just 17 years old was hailed as the “new Mozart” at an early age. She recently appeared on an episode of Viking’s award-winning enrichment channel, Viking.TV (Anne Diamond Welcomes Back Composer and Musician Alma Deutscher), where she discussed her upcoming concert series, which will be exclusive for Viking guests on select river voyages visiting Vienna.

Helen Deutscher, Godmother of Viking Egdir – A violinist, pianist and vocalist, Helen is an accomplished musician who honed her musical and performance skills at the Music Gymnasium in Vienna and as a member of the Vienna State Opera’s children’s chorus; she has also performed in several productions of her sister Miss Alma Deutscher’s opera, Cinderella. Helen and Alma recently appeared together on an episode of Viking.TV (Anne Diamond Interviews Classical Musicians, Alma & Helen Deutscher) where they discussed their remarkable lives and many musical milestones.

Dr. Janie Deutscher, Godmother of Viking Radgrid – An author and educator, Dr. Deutscher is also an accomplished musician and earned an organ scholarship to Oxford University where she later taught medieval literature; in recent years, she has concentrated on homeschooling and supporting the musical ambitions of her two daughters, Alma and Helen, godmothers of Viking Gymir and Viking Egdir, respectfully.

Brenda Hunsberger, Godmother of Viking Hervor – For more than four decades, Ms. Hunsberger, Senior Vice President of Travel Services with AAA Club Alliance, has worked in the industry as an accomplished travel agent; she believes in the power of travel to transform perspectives and change lives.

Karryn Christopher, Godmother of Viking Gersemi – Ms. Christopher is Executive Vice President of Preferred Partnerships & Marketing for Signature Travel Network, a member-owned travel cooperative established in 1956, where she has led the transformation of the company’s sales and marketing division.

Ghislaine Wood, Godmother of Viking Fjorgyn – As the Deputy Director of the University of East Anglia’s Sainsbury Centre, one of the most important public university art galleries in Great Britain, Ms. Wood carefully curates exhibitions, including the upcoming “Visions of Ancient Egypt,” which was developed in partnership with Viking; opening in September 2022, the exhibit will honor the 100th anniversary of the discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb. Ms. Wood discussed her work at the Sainsbury Centre in a recent episode of Viking.TV (Explore Alaskan Objects at the Sainsbury Centre with Ghislaine Wood), including the origins of their Alaska collection which examines how indigenous Alaskan communities developed technologies and tools to adapt to their environment.

Muriel Wilson, Godmother of Viking Skaga – As the Director of Event Strategy & Sponsorships for Virtuoso, Ltd., Ms. Wilson has been a distinguished staff member of the global network of agencies for more than 40 years and leverages her deep knowledge of the industry to develop quality hospitality and travel experiences for Virtuoso’s travel advisors and preferred partners as the Director of Event Strategy & Sponsorship.

Silversea’s New Otium Wellness Program

by Porthole Cruise and Travel March 16, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

We don’t have too much longer to wait for the debut of the new Silver Dawn from Silversea, just about 2 weeks, in fact. While we wait, the cruise line gave us a preview of their new wellness program and redesigned spa on board.

The Otium wellness program was developed using philosophy and traditions of the ancient Roman lifestyle encouraging balanced indulgence, pampering, and pleasure over sacrifice and delayed gratification.

Silver Dawn, the 10th ship from Silversea and the sister ship of Silver Muse and Silver Moon, features eight dining options with a guest capacity of 596.

Otium Wellness Program from Silversea

The first thing to know about Silver Dawn is that the spa has been reimagined from her sister ships. Not only is it 36 square meters larger, it’s also redesigned for a more seamless experience from one treatment to the next. Silversea also revamped the Beauty Salon, Fitness Center, Barber Salon, and an outdoor relaxation area from previous builds. At the center lies the relaxation room where Roman-inspired artworks and an infinity water feature set the mood for guests.

“With Otium, our guests will enjoy the next iteration of Silversea’s trademark level of comfort, as part of an innovation in wellness at sea,” says Barbara Muckermann, Silversea’s Chief Commercial Officer. “Thoughtfully designed with Otium in mind, Silver Dawn’s reimagined spa offers guests unprecedented comfort—enhanced with Roman-inspired art pieces, elegant furnishings, and a curated Otium treatment menu. Starting in suites with dedicated balcony, bathing and sleeping experiences, before intensifying in the beautiful Otium Spa, and extending through the ship with unforgettable moments of pleasure, the Otium wellness journey has been designed to pamper our guests like never before.”

The new menu of services at Otium is robust and draws from Roman mythology for a really unique experience. Offerings include:

The Otium

Inspired by the Mediterranean, warm, fragrant oils infused with shea butter, raspberry, and chamomile, are used on the body in soothing and sweeping movements. Using elements that transcend beyond a state of relaxation, mineral-rich pink salt stones, natural bamboo, and grounding calabash deeply stimulate and release tension, promoting feelings of inner wellbeing.

The Hedone Delight

Guided by Hedone, goddess of pleasure, enjoy a massage with the selection of aroma and body polishes that resonate with your own needs.

The Divine Experience

Nature’s own minerals are part of the healing process. Mood-balancing aromatics induce relaxation whilst cocooned prior to a decadent scalp, neck, and shoulder massage and hand treatment.

The Apollonian Spirit

Inspired by Apollo, the god of healing. This body treatment helps provide immediate relief for tired, aching muscles. Mineral-rich salt stones harness a natural warmth, whilst a nutrient-rich cold mask provides a dynamic rescue therapy.

Do you love going to the spa on a cruise ship? Let us know in the comments!

Paris with Viking Cruises: The First 24 Hours

by Porthole Cruise and Travel March 16, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

I didn’t even want to look at it.

Sitting there, all empty-like. Teasing me while I waited for the jet doors to close for good. I watched as fat droplets of warm, South Florida rain leaked down the pane across the aisle. 10 minutes left.

Five.

That “it” would be seat 41B on my Air France flight from Miami to Paris, which, to my delight in 41C, would remain empty the full 8 hours we soared across the Atlantic.

Paris, affectionately known as the City of Lights, would play host to a few more shiny objects this week as the team at Viking Cruises set out to name a handful of new vessels built specifically for the gentle ribbons of France’s Seine River.

If you recall last week, I was aboard the world’s largest cruise ship, Wonder of the Seas from Royal Caribbean. Going from the robust Spring Break party that was the Coco Cay lagoon in the Bahamas to sipping a Bordeaux while ingraining the finer points of 19th century Impressionism was going to be quite the change of scenery, but hey, c’est la vie.

At my disposal was three years of high school French (shout out Madame Schmidt) and a handful of ski trips to Quebec City where the most I learned was how to ask for the boiled maple syrup poured in the snow and rolled on a stick.

Thankfully, I had the PR team at Viking to lean on. For the past few weeks, they’d been nothing but saintly as I navigated vaccine requirements, PLF forms, sworn statements and pre-cruise COVID testing protocols.

Was it a lot? Sure. Did Viking make it easy? You bet.

Fast forward to landing (the most important part!) when that delicious jolt of anticipation burst out from my core. Of course, what do I open the window to? Fat droplets of cold, French rain leaking down the pane.

Sights of Paris Shore Excursion

After hopping on the Viking-provided transportation to the ship at Pont de Grennelle in the heart of Paris, I was just a COVID swab away from a tuna tataki bowl that was as gorgeous as it was tasty and a shore excursion through the city.

Our tour guide Sandrine, a native of France, spent the afternoon captivating us with the history, culture and secrets of the city. I’d tell you some of what she said, but where’s the fun in that? Take the tour for yourself!

From the towering astylar know as the Arc de Triomphe to the still under construction grounds of Notre Dame cathedral, Paris had something thing new to stare at in awe around every corner. Not even an overcast day and cold breeze could damper the group as we chatted animatedly about the sights, smells and sounds of France’s most visited city.

As fate would have it, the city had relaxed COVID protocols just a day before I arrived, so the chances I’d need to display my vaccination card at restaurants or stores was slim.

Masks, however, it’s important to note, remain on for Viking guests while on board for the time being.

With day one in the books, it was time to fully enjoy the heated bathroom floors and the plush bed in my stateroom.

Enjoy them, I did.

Our travels in France will continue through the weekend, so stay tuned for the naming ceremony write up and drop any questions in the comments!
