Holland America Line’s Nieuw Statendam Returns to Service

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 22, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Over the weekend, one of cruising’s top brands Holland America Line returned another ship to service, brining their total operating number to five ships since cruising resumed earlier this year. Nieuw Statendam sailed from Fort Lauderdale, FL yesterday for a seven-day western Caribbean cruise that will call on Nassau, Bahamas; Ocho Rios and Port Royal, Jamaica; and Half Moon Cay, Holland America Line’s private island in the Bahamas.

To commemorate the occasion, Holland America Line held a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the terminal to open embarkation, and team members greeted guests with flag-waving fanfare as they boarded the ship.

“Today is another milestone in our return to service, with Nieuw Statendam starting operation just in time for Thanksgiving, and we have a lot to be thankful for this year that we’re getting back in the water,” said Gus Antorcha, president of Holland America Line. “Today is a great day for Holland America Line, and our team members can’t wait to welcome guests on board.”

The ship is scheduled to remain sailing between seven and 11-day Caribbean itineraries through April and guests have the opportunity to combined back-to-back itineraries that offer an in-depth exploration covering more than one part of the region. Every Caribbean itinerary includes a call at Half Moon Cay, Holland America Line’s private island in the Bahamas.

The cruise line also recently welcomed a new edition to their fleet as the brand new Holland America Line Rotterdam entered service in the Caribbean a few weeks ago. All these ships sailing from Fort Lauderdale is a big boost to the local economy, as Holland America Line estimates they spend $364,000 in terms of fuel, food, flowers, piano tuning, supplies, port taxes and spending per visit, per ship. They also work with nearly 100 local vendors to ensure their ships are ready to sail when passengers step on board.

Sophia Loren Presides Over MSC Seashore Naming Ceremony

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 19, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

After a day of exploring both a brand new cruise ship and a private island paradise in the Bahamas, guests sailing on board MSC Seashore still had one thing to look forward to; the very first naming ceremony for a cruise ship to be held at a private island and the chance to catch a glimpse of Hollywood royalty, the ship’s Godmother, Sophia Loren.a

In attendance were members of the Aponte family of MSC Group as well as Executive Chairman Pierfrancesco Vago, CEO Gianni Onorato, President of MSC Cruises USA Rubén Rodríguez and a number of other executives and VIP guests.

Rubén Rodríguez commented on the importance of the occasion and gave a bright outlook on the future.

“Today is a truly special day for us. MSC Seashore is yet another example of us bringing our newest, most innovative ships to the U.S. market. It’s also special because we are naming her at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, our breath-taking private island committed to the restoration of marine resources and the ongoing conservation of marine life. We are excited to showcase Miami’s newest ship and our unique marine reserve in the Bahamas to our travel partners, government officials, friends and special guests. These are both key examples of our large investments to drive rapid growth in the U.S., in addition to expanding access to MSC Cruises with a new homeport in Port Canaveral and construction of a new state-of-the-art terminal at PortMiami. We look forward to welcoming more guests to explore new destinations, discover new cultures and connect with new people.”

Themes throughout the night echoed the commitment MSC has towards sustainability, the close relationship between MSC’s cruise and cargo divisions and MSC’s commitment to giving back through their MSC Foundation charity all around the world.

After the speakers had finished, the ship’s officers entered the theater and took their place on stage for the grand finale. Accompanied by Captain Giuseppe Galano, Sophia Loren took the stage to a thunderous applause and the tune of Zoo Be Zoo Be Zoo from her 1961 movie The Millionairess. Then, as the room counted down from five, they cut the ribbon, sending the bottle of champagne cascading into the bow.

After the ceremony, guests enjoyed a special Gala Dinner to commemorate the occasion. Guests enjoyed some unique menu items like Crispy Kataifi Tiger Shrimp and Imam Bayildi while others opted for the traditional lobster tail and filet mignon.

After dinner, things really heated up when Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and three-time Grammy Award-winner Nile Rodgers and his band Chic took to the Swarovski crystal atrium and absolutely rocked the ship!

Basque by the Bottle

by Kevin Revolinski November 17, 2021
written by Kevin Revolinski

Before we explore some of Europe’s most interesting wines, the term ‘Basque’ deserves explanation. Euskadi, Basque Country, is an autonomous community in Spain, but it is also a larger cultural zone that spills beyond the political borders and even into France. The Basque have their own government, strong ties to their culture, and a language that bears no resemblance to others in Europe. And the only thing as important to the Basque as their love of shared meals is their wine.

Txakoli

Pronounced “CHOCK-oh-lee,” this dry white wine with high acidity shows a pale yellow color with a light body, low alcohol content, and a touch of effervescence. Also called txakolina, it is served young and cold. The grapes are native to Basque Country: hondarrabi zuri for the white, and hondarribi beltza for the far less common red. (The rosé is gaining popularity as an export.)

The hilly coastal environment brings more rainfall than any other wine region in Spain while protecting vineyards from spring frosts and withering summer heat. That said, this wine is a survivor: the 19th-century phylloxera plague that devastated the French wine industry nearly took out hondarribi grapes as well.

The style enjoys three Denominations of Origin. The first two lie along the Bay of Biscay: Getariako Txakolina, produced by just over 30 wineries around San Sebastian; and Bizkaiko Txakolina, Bilbao’s province, with around 36 wineries. The third and smallest DO is Txakoli de Álava, produced in the tiny province to the south of Bilbao, stepping into Rioja territory, the only of the three not to touch the sea.

These wines are served in flat-bottomed glasses like tumblers, and if you order one you can expect a “high pour,” a tradition shared with local cider: the server holds the bottle from the bottom and tips it forward, sending a stream down, ideally, into your glass, to aerate it a bit and activate the mild carbonation.

Try txakoli with regional seafood or have a glass with one of the local pintxos (“PEEN-chos,” the Basque version of tapas), especially the gilda: an olive, anchovy, and a couple of pickled guindilla peppers skewered on a toothpick. Consider packing a bottle to take home, but be aware that txakoli should be drunk within a year of production.

Windstar Cruises Adds All-Inclusive Pricing Options

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 16, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

One of the most popular small ship luxury cruise lines is changing the way they sell cruises. Windstar Cruises announced today that the cruise line would now be offering all-inclusive cruise vacations where guests pay a flat fee for their booking which includes the base cruise fare, unlimited wine, beer, and cocktails; Wi-Fi; and even all gratuities. Previously, guests would add on extras for an upcharge when planning their cruise through Windstar.

According to Windstar Cruises President Christopher Prelog, the new offerings give people the flexibility to curate their ideal vacation while also staying in line with the latest luxury cruise philosophies practiced by their peers.

“In an effort to be more in line with other luxury offerings in the cruise industry, particularly with the rollout of our newly transformed all-suite Star Plus Class yachts, we’re now giving the option of an all-inclusive price for all of our sailings,” said Prelog. “We didn’t want to take away the à la carte option from guests who enjoy going that way. We want our guests to have the choice based on their preference, what they need on board, and their general vacation philosophy.”

$250 Million Star Plus Initiative

First announced in 2018, Windstar’s $250 million initiative to increase the capacity of their motor yachts also played a part in the switch to all-inclusive vacation package options.

RELATED: Windstar Announces $250 Million in Fleet Improvements

“We thought about only offering the all-inclusive fare on the newly transformed Star Plus Class yachts,” said Prelog. “But after talking and listening to our repeat guests and valued Travel Advisors, we found some like to go à la carte and only purchase amenities as they go. After discussing internally, we all came to the same conclusion – why not offer both on all our yachts? We offer a choice between sailing yachts and all-suite yachts, and now a la carte or all-inclusive. That seems to fit the Windstar brand.”

What do you think about a la cart versus all-inclusive cruising? Let us know in the comments!

Royal Caribbean Holds Naming Ceremony for New Odyssey of the Seas

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 15, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

The newest ship from Royal Caribbean International is officially ready to sail! The cruise line hosted a naming ceremony on board the brand new Odyssey of the Seas in Port Everglades on Saturday. The ship’s Godmother, Erin Brown, the first Bahamian paratriathlete to compete in the Paralympic Games qualifiers, was joined by Royal Caribbean Group Chairman and CEO Richard Fain and Royal Caribbean International President and CEO Michael Bayley with Senior Vice President of Entertainment Nick Weir playing MC.

Brown is the person from the Bahamas to be chosen as a Royal Caribbean ship Godmother.

With most of those on board looking on from the pool deck, Brown shared her overwhelmingly positive message.

“I am immensely grateful to have been selected as Godmother to Odyssey of the Seas,” said Brown. “As a proud Bahamian, it is an honor to also represent The Bahamas and share my story with so many others. My experiences have empowered me to reinvent myself and transform my life, and I’m committed to helping ensure others can do the same.”

Soon to be former Royal Caribbean Group Chairman and CEO Richard Fain gave credit to the team at Royal for accomplishing such a magnificent ship all while in the midst of a pandemic.

“Today, we get to show the world what imagination and determination look like when they come together,” said Fain. “All of what our teams have done over the past 20 months has led us to this moment when we can finally show the innovation and beauty of Odyssey of the Seas.”

Royal Caribbean International President and CEO Michael Bayley noted the decades of partnership between the Bahamas and his cruise line.

“It’s our honor to welcome Erin as our first Bahamian Godmother,” said Bayley. “She is an incredible individual who pushes to change the status quo, making her the perfect choice for a ship as innovative as Odyssey of the Seas. It’s also fitting because The Bahamas has been our great partner and neighbor since Royal Caribbean first set sail to the islands more than 50 years ago.”

After the ceremony, the ship set sail for a 2-day cruise with a call on Perfect Day at Cococay, the cruise line’s private island in the Bahamas. Stay tuned for more highlights of the sailing later this week!

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 12, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

She spent years watching her son Shaquille dominate the basketball court, now Dr. Lucille O’Neal has a new responsibility in her life; Godmother of the recently transformed Carnival Radiance coming this December following a $200 million drydock refurbishment and renaming from the original Carnival Victory.

Dr. O’Neal will preside over the ship’s invitation-only naming ceremony taking place in Long Beach, California prior to its inaugural cruise on December 13 and she and Shaquille will cut the ribbon to officially open Big Chicken, the second at-sea restaurant created by Shaquille, featuring dishes based on his family’s recipes.

“When Shaquille was named Chief Fun Officer a couple of years ago, never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be named godmother of a cruise ship!” said Lucille. “To think that my name will be forever associated with Carnival Radiance and that I’m joining other esteemed women who have served as a Carnival godmother is truly an honor.”

Carnival has long been the “fun ships”, so it made sense when they hired Shaq as their Chief Fun Officer and began their popular campaign with the big personality.

“Lucille’s longstanding commitment to caring for others is a reflection of what we look for in a Godmother and as the mother of our amazing Chief Fun Officer, Shaquille O’Neal, we also know she’s got some fun in her DNA so she’s the perfect choice for godmother of this beautiful ship,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.

About Dr. Lucille O’Neal

The author of the inspirational biography, “Walk Like You Have Somewhere to Go,” Lucille O’Neal is a great example of the importance of education. She made sure to resume her studies after raising her children and went on to graduate cum laude with a bachelor’s degree from Bethune Cookman University and completing a graduate program from the University of Phoenix. For these efforts, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from BCU.

Dr. O’Neal is an accomplished speaker who donates her time and talent to a wide range of charitable organizations, including serving on the board of the Orlando Ovarian Center Alliance, and president and co-founder of the Mothers of Professional Basketball Players.

She also established the Odessa Chambliss Center for Health Equity on the campus of Bethune Cookman University in honor of her late mother, Odessa Chambliss, and focuses on health disparities, social determinants of health, and social justice.

Congrats to Lucille and the entire O’Neal family!

Cruise Deal of the Week – November 12, 2021

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 12, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

It was a busy week for cruising as a few major announcements, both good and unexpected, had the industry buzzing this week.

The most significant news was the announcement that Richard Fain would retire from his position as the CEO of Royal Caribbean Group after 33 years effective in early January. Fain’s career at Royal Caribbean was unprecedented as he oversaw incredible growth and major advancement during his tenure across all of Royal Caribbean Group’s brands. But, tomorrow, the cruise line is set to host the naming ceremony for their newest vessel Odyssey of the Seas and we expect there to be plenty of love for their outgoing CEO along with the ship!

On to the Cruise Deal of the Week! Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine was lucky enough to get invited on board the inaugural cruise for Atlas Ocean Voyages’ new ship World Navigator as it sailed through the Greek Islands and wow was it an amazing experience. The cruise line recently announced an upcoming Black Friday sale on voyages sailing between March 1 and September 30, 2022 and cruisers are going to love the offer.

Atlas Ocean Voyages’ Black Friday Sale

Those who book one of the 29 itineraries in Antarctica and the Arctic, South America, the Mediterranean, British Isles and Northern Europe, or Iceland and Greenland aboard World Navigator or World Traveller, launching in July 2022, will receive complimentary round-trip, intercontinental business-class air travel for all new deposited suite bookings or 20 percent savings for all new deposited stateroom bookings.

But here’s the deal, make sure you use the code below when you book!

Black Friday Deal Code: BLKFRI21

“Our generous Black Friday Offer delivers the best value, savings and selection for an all-inclusive, 2022 luxury adventure with Atlas,” said Carlos Garzon, Senior Vice President of Business Development for Atlas Ocean Voyages. “World Navigator and World Traveller call at smaller ports than other cruise ships and can ply narrow channels and shallow waters to bring guests to authentic, off-the-beaten-path locales, as well as dock in city centers for the most convenient access. Because of this, Atlas Ocean Voyages is ideal for seasoned travelers seeking a distinctive, luxurious and safe experience.”

The deal starts on November 26th and runs through the 30th so if you’ve got a cruise vacation on your radar this Black Friday, Atlas Ocean Voyages is letting you know where to start looking!

World Travel & Tourism Council Says Travel Rebounded in 2021

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 11, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

A new report from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) reveals that the U.S. travel and tourism sector is on pace for year-over-year growth in 2021 of nearly 36%, a number that well exceeds the global tourism recovery. The best news? It’s looking like 2022 could be even better!

The World Travel & Tourism Council is a non-profit forum of travel and tourism businesses and is the only private sector group to advocate for the travel industry. Their latest research shows the U.S. Travel & Tourism sector can expect a year-over-year growth of 35.6%, representing an increase of $393 billion, for a total contribution of nearly $1.5 trillion to the U.S. GDP. In comparison, the global economy is set to receive a 30.7% year-over-year increase from the travel & tourism sector in 2021.

“Our research shows that while the global travel & tourism sector is slowly beginning to recover, the U.S. is recovering faster than many other regions,” said Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO. “Last year, the pandemic decimated more than five million Travel & Tourism jobs across the U.S.; however, due to a predicted rise in international and domestic spend this year and next, both jobs and GDP are on the rise.”

“The U.S. opening its borders and easing restrictions to major source markets such as the UK and the EU will provide a massive boost to economies on both sides of the Atlantic. However, the long-term recovery of the sector in the U.S and around the world depends on the U.S. border remaining open to international visitors and making travel easier,” Simpson continued.

What’s the Outlook for Travel in 2022?

At the current recovery rate, in 2022, the U.S. could experience a further year-over-year growth of 28.4%, representing an increase of $425 billion and bringing the sector’s total contribution to the U.S. economy beyond pre-pandemic levels at over $1.9 trillion.

The WTTC also outlined five areas that could improve growth in 2022: let fully vaccinated travelers move more freely, digital COVID-19 status markers, recognition of all WHO-approved COVID-19 vaccines and continued health and safety protocols for traveler safety.

Bahamian Para-Triathlete Erin Brown Named Odyssey of the Seas Godmother

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 11, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

When Odyssey of the Seas sets sail on her naming ceremony cruise this weekend, a very special guest will be in attendance. Erin Brown, a Para-Triathlete from the Bahamas, has been named the Godmother of Royal Caribbean’s newest ship thanks to her story of courage and determination.

While in college, Brown lost her leg to a rare bone cancer called osteosarcoma, but that didn’t stop her from pursuing her dreams and competing at the international level as well as being a mother of two.

“From the moment we heard Erin’s story, how her courage and determination inspired others and led to a more inclusive consciousness about succeeding with disabilities, we were moved and knew she was a natural choice for Godmother of our newest ship, Odyssey of the Seas,” said Michael Bayley, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean International. “A Godmother serves as the guiding spirit of the ship and brings good luck and safe travels to its guests and crew who sail on board for years to come.”

Her determination was evident through the phrase she kept repeating to herself through a year of chemotherapy; “mind over matter”.

“A sudden change like the one I experienced is just an opportunity to rebrand yourself to yourself and to society. All those skills you had before – you still have them,” said Brown who has gone on to become an advocate for rights for the disabled and works at the University of The Bahamas as the compliance officer and counselor for those living with physical disabilities.

Her first event post-surgery was the 100-mile cycling Ride for Hope in the Bahamas where she led a group of adaptive athletes who conquered the challenging terrain.

RELATED: Richard Fain Steps Down as Royal Caribbean Group CEO

“Having Erin as our Godmother is a fitting way for us to pay tribute to The Bahamas as well,” said Bayley. “Royal Caribbean’s very first international destination was The Bahamas more than 50 years ago. To this day, Nassau remains one of our most popular ports of call, and our private island destination – Perfect Day at CocoCay – remains a top pick for our guests. We are excited about this ceremony and honoring our longtime partners as well as the newest Bahamian-flagged ship in our fleet.”

Brown will be honored at the Odyssey of the Seas naming ceremony this Saturday the 13th where she will formally bless the new ship. As Godmother, Ms. Brown will serve as the ship’s guiding spirit and bestow good luck and safe travels for all who sail.

Check Out the New Culinary Enhancements from Oceania Cruises

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 10, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Earlier this year, Oceania Cruises unveiled a series of fleet-wide culinary enhancements which included specially-crafted dining experiences, menus and elevated service levels as part of their OceaniaNEXT initiative. OceaniaNEXT is a set of enhancements aimed at elevating every aspect of the guest experience from dining to service and everything in between.

Today, they announced another round of enhancements, this time focusing on wine tasting programs, expanded in-room dining offerings and a soufflé of the day in The Grand Dining Room. These changes have already been implemented on on board Marina and Riviera and will debut on Insignia, Nautica, Regatta, and Sirena when those ships return to service.

“The OceaniaNEXT enhancements continue to elevate The Finest Cuisine at Sea® to be even better than ever,” said Bob Binder, President and CEO of Oceania Cruises. “Never resting on our laurels, we continue to challenge ourselves to raise the bar to continually delight our guests. Across all six of our ships, the creativity and dedication of the Oceania Cruises culinary team continues to create memorable experiences for our guests.”

24-Hour In-Room Dining

A new in-room dining menu with expanded offerings for each meal is a highlight of the new culinary direction Oceania is taking. New appetizers include Plant-Based California Rolls, an Antipasti Plate, and Shrimp Cocktail, with new soups and salads including Grilled Salmon Salad and Miso Ramen Soup. The new burger menu brings an Alaskan Salmon Burger and an Impossible Burger to the in-room dining experience, while new entrées include a Petite Beef Filet, Thai Coconut Red Curry, a Hawaiian Poke Bowl, and a Mezze Platter. Dessert includes Humphry Slocombe Ice Cream, “Pure Energy” Smoothies, and a Chocolate Mousse Cake. The line also offers a full hot breakfast with all your favorites for in-room service.

Soufflé of the Day

You don’t have to hail from France to enjoy an excellent soufflé. Oceania Cruises has added another layer of indulgence to their cruise vacations with the addition of the Soufflé of the Day in The Grand Dining Room. An egg-based dessert, the soufflé has long been a favorite on board and the rotating soufflé menu includes a few spins on the classic dish. Here are some of them!

  • Coco-Malibu Soufflé with Pineapple and Lime
  • Valrhona Guanaja Chocolate Soufflé Topped with Cacao Nibs
  • Green Apple Martini Soufflé
  • Pistachio Soufflé with a Cherry Ragout
  • Grand Marnier Soufflé
  • Passion Fruit Soufflé with a Mango Ragout
  • Lime and Limoncello Soufflé with a Berry Compote
  • Chestnut Soufflé with Pear Ragout

Wine Tasting Programs on Every Cruise

If you’re going to revamp your cuisine, it makes sense that the wine list gets an upgrade as well. The newly designed tasting programs are led by knowledgable sommeliers who guide interactive sessions on some of the best wines from around the world. Unique tasting sessions include Top California Cabs, Mediterranean Jewels, Stars of the Southern Hemisphere, Forever French, 360 Degrees of Reds, and The Red Challenge, which pits two different wine regions against each other, like Napa vs. Bordeaux.

Oceania is also offering a curated array of local wines, spirits, and tapas during the evening wine bar service that is offered in La Reserve or Baristas aboard Marina and Riviera on certain evenings.

Richard Fain Steps Down as Royal Caribbean Group CEO

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 9, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Cruisers woke up to some monumental news in the industry this morning. Richard Fain, one of the most recognizable people in cruising, has announced he’s stepping down as Chief Executive Officer of the Royal Caribbean Group after more than 33 years effective January 3, 2022. The cruise line has already revealed that Chief Financial Officer Jason Liberty will assume the role as CEO as well as join the Board of Directors. Fain will remain as Chair of the Board of Directors.

Since assuming the role of CEO, Fain oversaw massive growth and incredible advancements that brought cruising into the 21st century. He also oversaw the construction of revolutionary cruise ships like Royal Caribbean International’s Sovereign, Voyager, and Oasis classes; Celebrity Cruises’ Solstice and Edge classes; the highly anticipated Royal Caribbean International Icon class to be introduced in 2023; and Silversea Cruises’ “Project Evolution”, the industry’s first hybrid powered ship coming in 2023.

“Given the great depth and breadth of our leadership, and the positive outlook for our business, this is the appropriate time to step aside and have Jason take over. He is a highly versatile and strategic leader, who has been integral to all aspects of the company’s accomplishments and performance,” said Fain. “There are no words to express my admiration and appreciation to the people of the Royal Caribbean Group, who have been the real drivers of our success; and my profound appreciation for the support and guidance of the Board of Directors during good times and bad throughout this long period of sustained growth.”

“Our success as a business has relied heavily on our culture and on the values we hold dear. Jason epitomizes those values, and I know he will work to build on them in this everchanging world. I couldn’t be happier to have such a superbly qualified and principled leader succeed me as CEO. Jason will lead the Group to new heights,” Fain added.

The COVID-19 pandemic was undoubtedly the most challenging problem Fain faced during his tenure, but he helped with the creation of the Healthy Sail Panel and was instrumental in bringing cruise lines together to help keep people safe on cruise ships.

“Richard has been a visionary leader, who has made innumerable and remarkable contributions to our company and our industry,” said Bill Kimsey, lead director of the Board. “Most recently, his stewardship during the COVID pandemic marks him as one of the great CEOs of his generation. The cruising community and all of us in the company owe him a debt of gratitude.”

Celebrity Cruises Takes Another Step Towards Full Fleet Return

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 8, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Over the weekend, Celebrity Cruises marked another milestone in their cruise return when Celebrity Reflection and Celebrity Constellation both set sail with passengers for the first time since the pandemic began. Celebrity now has 10 of their 14 ships active around the world with Celebrity Infinity, Celebrity Solstice, Celebrity Eclipse and Celebrity Xpedition still waiting to return.

Celebrity Reflection set sail from Fort Lauderdale on Saturday the 6th on a seven-night cruise from Fort Lauderdale, with calls on the Bahamas, Mexico, Belize and Honduras. Celebrity Constellation set sail the next day from its new homeport of Tampa Bay cruising to Belize and Cozumel, Mexico. Both ships will spend the next six months in the Caribbean before transatlantic repositioning cruises to the Mediterranean for a season calling on Italy, Spain, Greece, and Croatia.

Captain Nikolaos today welcomed the first guests back aboard Celebrity Reflection.

“The past year has been one of remarkable change, but we can definitely say the announcement of the return of these two marvelous ships is a change in the right direction as we invite our guests back on board,” said Celebrity Cruises President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo. “The experiences our guests will enjoy aboard these beautiful new-luxury ships will provide the healing power of travel that we have all been seeking.”

The Future Celebrity Cruises’ Fleet

Just last week, the cruise line’s newest ship, Celebrity Apex, set sail on its inaugural cruise from Fort Lauderdale with the plan of sailing rotating Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries with calls on Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, Belize, Grand Caymans this Caribbean cruise season.

We also won’t have to wait much longer for the debut of another brand new Celebrity Cruises ship as Celebrity Beyond is slated to begin its first cruise season in the Spring of 2022. In October, President and CEO of Celebrity Cruises Lisa Lutoff-Perlo announced Captain Kate McCue would serve as Captain of Beyond, the fourth Celebrity ship for which she’s held that title.

Cruising on Viking Venus: Just What the Doctor Ordered

by Judi Cuervo November 8, 2021
written by Judi Cuervo

Never say never, I suppose, but I’d be stunned if anyone even caught a cold aboard a Viking Ocean ship, much less contracted COVID-19.

I just returned from a 12-night Mediterranean Odyssey voyage aboard Viking Venus, the latest addition to Viking’s gorgeous series of identical 930-passenger, 47,842 grt ships.  From the safety-conscious confines of Viking Venus, I now find myself released into an uncertain world filled with anti-vaxxers, the unwashed and unmasked.  If I want to steer clear of COVID, my best strategy would be to return to Viking Venus. Immediately.

Check out just some of the safety protocols that Viking Ocean employs aboard its fleet:

All Fully Vaccinated: That’s guests and crew.  I sure can’t say that about the people in my supermarket.

Daily PCR Testing:  Aboard Viking Venus, every guest and crew member’s day begins with the preparation of their PCR test—a simple dribble of saliva in a labeled test tube, to be collected by the cabin steward.  I haven’t spit so much since I was about six years old but after a few days, it becomes second nature.

Viking Cruises

On board testing lab | Photo: Viking Cruises

On Board Testing Lab:  Each of those test tubes is delivered to Viking Venus’ on board lab for analysis by two technicians and a doctor.  If, God forbid, a positive result is revealed, that unfortunate person is immediately quarantined and disembarked at the next port.

Contact Tracing Device:  Each guest is provided with a little gizmo on a red lanyard which must be carried or worn outside their stateroom.  This little workhorse records your interactions with other guests or crew members and, in the event PCR testing reveals a COVID case, the authorities aboard Viking Venus may quickly identify all those with whom the person had contact to test them and prevent the spread.

Viking Venus

Daily Temperature Monitor:  Before you dig into those Eggs Benedict, you’ll position yourself in front of the standing temperature monitor located at the entrance to World Buffet.  If you’re a Fahrenheit kind of person like I am, that flashing “36.6” might scare the heck out of you at first, but I assure you it’s an acceptable body temperature in Centigrade. Hand washing is also required before setting foot into The World Café.

Daily Health Questionnaire:  Like spitting in a test tube, this one becomes a morning ritual, easy-to-complete, either on your phone via Viking’s Viking Voyager app or through the interactive TV in your stateroom.

Uncrowded Ships:  Only 423 guests occupied Viking Venus during my sailing, about half of the 930-guest capacity.  Although this number will increase in time, right now, you can count on 50%-60% capacity on Viking Ocean sailings.

Masks and Social Distancing:  A limit of six people in elevators, masks required outside of your stateroom and social distancing practices at bars, in restaurants and aboard tour buses.  Of course, you can remove that mask when you’re chowing down in Manfredi’s, chugging a beer at The Explorer’s Lounge or any time you’re eating or drinking. (Masks, and a very generous supply of hand sanitizer, are provided to all guests—I’ve got so much hand sanitizer now, I’m thinking of selling some on Ebay.)

No Dancing.  Okay, this one sort of rocked my world, but the thinking behind it is that a dance floor will fill and people will be unmasked.  Still, it’s only right that if we can’t dance, an additional directive—one advising The Viking Band to avoid playing anything from the Bee Gees’ Saturday Night Fever era—should be implemented and strictly enforced.

Robots!:  Late at night, robots prowl high-trafficked areas of Viking Ocean ships, disinfecting with new short-wavelength ultraviolet (UV-C) lights and high-density filters, which kill 99.99% of all airborne viruses and bacteria.  I’ve seen these babies and I’ll tell you it was a disappointment.  I expected them to look like R2D2 or that clunky robot on the Columbo episode with the genius kid, but they just look like…machines.

Ultraviolet (UV-C) lights | Photo: Viking Cruises

Almost Obsessive Cleaning:  Have you ever sat on deck aboard a cruise ship and thought “Look at that smudge on the inside frame of that deck chair’s chrome?”  Neither have I.  But aboard Viking, cleaning of…well, everything…happens around the clock.  And my hat is off to the crew member who had to get into a contortionist position so that he could reach that smudge.  The frame positively glowed when he was through though, to be honest, it positively glowed even before he polished it.

And those are just the protocols employed aboard!  Ashore, Viking strictly enforces the directives of local governments as well, requiring masks on tour buses and, on our sailing, prohibiting independent touring at all Italian ports.  Which, for me, translated into no pizza in Naples and no shopping in Rome. Total bummer but today’s travelers, sadly, must expect the unexpected.

From the get-go, Viking has led the industry in aggressive COVID-19 safety protocols. In March 2020, Viking was the first line to suspend operations in response to COVID-19 and only resumed limited service with three UK-resident-only coastal sailings in May 2021 when that government lifted its cruise ban.

For those eager, but hesitant, to return to sea, Viking Ocean, and its robust approach to fighting COVID-19, might be exactly what the doctor ordered.

Happy Holidays, everyone!

Holiday season 2021 is upon us and that means cruises are headed to warmer climates all over the Caribbean and Central America. If you’re still planning your next cruise vacation, cruise lines are still offering deals galore as they ramp up operation back to full strength. Have you booked your next cruise vacation?

Today on Cruise Deal of the Week, we have a four day cruise to Mexico’s famous Baja Peninsula on board the recently upgraded Carnival Radiance! The best part? There are dozens of sail dates to choose from between December 2021 and April 2024, so you can fit your cruise around your busy schedule!

Four Day Mexico Baja Peninsula Cruise

Carnival Radiance will set sail from Long Beach, California on December 13, 2021 as well as dozens of other dates after that for a four day cruise South to Mexico’s Baja Peninsula. The first call on the cruise is Santa Catalina Island, one of California’s channel island off the coast of Los Angeles. From there, the cruise continues South with a call on Ensenada, Mexico. The cruise then turns back and spends a day at sea before returning to Long Beach, California.

Those looking to book shouldn’t waste any time as Carnival Cruise Line has some nice deals going. Interior rooms start at just $114 per person and depending on which date you choose to sail, balcony rooms are going for as little as $244 per person. Carnival is also offering some perks for booking now, like $1,600 cash back, onboard credit, 50% reduced deposits and free upgrades on select bookings.

Carnival Radiance, formerly Carnival Victory, recently underwent a $200 million drydock refurbishment and now sports the new blue livery found on the latest Carnival Cruise Line ships along with the name change.

The Perfect Holiday Gifts for Cruisers

by Judi Cuervo November 4, 2021
written by Judi Cuervo

The holidays are BACK — and so is cruising!

This year, you can hope to gather with family and friends for holiday dinners, drinks, parties, gift-giving, and other festivities that go far, far beyond that 60-minute video call that was the extent of last year’s holiday celebration — the one where you spent the entire hour trying to explain to your Zoom-virgin Aunt Sadie how she could turn on her computer’s camera.

Why not celebrate the return of the holiday season and the return of cruising with gifts that will help family and friends return to sea for the first time since it was anchors (and everything else) away? Here’s Porthole Cruise and Travel’s gift guide for a happier, healthier 2022.

Slim Gym: Forty-two percent of Americans gained an average of 29 pounds during the pandemic, so it’s probably best to keep the chocolate Santas and fruit cakes to a minimum. Instead, consider gifting a gym membership to someone who spent a bit too much time baking — and eating — massive quantities of sourdough bread. (NOTE: Forego this suggestion and consider a gift of one-size-fits-all clothing for the highly sensitive pandemic weight gainer.)

Hairy Scary: Cut! Color! Waxing! The pandemic brought our beauty regimens to a screeching halt, shuttering hair salons and making most of us, after a few months, resemble Wasabi, the 2021 winner of the Westminster Dog Show. And admit it, ladies: Your legs didn’t meet a razor until the warm weather returned and, even then, who ventured above the knee? A pedicure? What’s that? Before we return to cruising, most of us need professional help and a day of beauty at a favorite salon is the answer. And this is an appropriate gift for men, as well — but skip the waxing if your guy is out to ace the “Very Hairy Chest” contest.

About Face (Masks): Will we need masks on board? Will we not? One mask? Two masks? A face shield? What’s next? Earplugs and a tampon? Yes, the rules seem to change in the blink of an eye, so play it safe and consider a gift of some really, really nice face masks from jamsworld.com or lafayette148.com because those paper ones are so lame. And if masks are not required on board, the recipient will at least look great during the flight.

Old Bag: Like most women, I haven’t applied makeup since March 13, 2020. And since they say that cosmetics “expire” after three months, it might be the perfect time to update the contents of your favorite lady’s makeup bag. (Of course, I’m still using an eyeshadow quad that I bought in the 90s but I’d never admit it to my optometrist.)

Merch On!: Check your favorite cruise line’s website and you just might find a selection of gifts that will tide cruise fans over until they sail again: Apparel, bags, bath robes, beach towels, caps … even bedding! Carnival’s Ornament Fun Pack seems particularly appropriate now. It’s three nautical baubles, an iconic Carnival Funnel, a Carnival Fun Ship and a Palm Tree, to hang on your tree (carnival.com/special-occasion-gifts-cabin-decor, $22.99). I, personally, hope to score a Tranquility Mattress from Regent Seven Seas and Oceania Cruises (regentbedcollection.com and oceaniabedcollection.com, $1,640 to $4,690).

Le Barth is Back

by Dana Freeman November 3, 2021
written by Dana Freeman

Le Barthélemy has been named the number one hotel on St. Barths, and now I know why. I’ve just spent several days at this small luxury hotel, and it is no wonder why the accolades are pouring in. Everything from the food to the service and the turquoise ocean views from my suite was très magnifique!

After withstanding a hurricane and a pandemic, the award-winning Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa is back and better than ever. Aiming to make a splash as the winter season begins, they have just opened Amis St. Barth, a new beachfront dining venue on St. Barths’ secluded Grand Cul de Sac bay.

“We’re thrilled to introduce our new dining concept created for friends old and new to enjoy a celebration of the Mediterranean in the most stylish yet comfortable oceanfront setting,” says Marc Dobbels, managing director at Le Barthélemy. “Perfect for group gatherings, private dinners and romantic evenings alike, Amis, translated to friends, exemplifies our core philosophy of couture hospitality, offering personalized, unhurried service for a relaxing experience like being with the best of friends.” says Dobbels.

AMIS ST. BARTH

Amis is destined to be St. Barths’ newest hotspot where everything at shines. In fact, it sparkles. While ordering a glass of French Champagne or sparkling rose seems like a logical choice, don’t overlook the drink menu at Le Bar, the restaurant’s centerpiece where crafting cocktails is an art form. I was memorized watching the bartenders create their signature botanic cocktails. Many of which are served in fun bird-shaped glassware or exquisite gold-rimmed highball glasses topped off with fresh herbs and edible scented hydrolats. Even elixirs as simple as a vodka martini are exquisite with fanciful orange twists.

Alongside Sous-chefs Marie Cécile Gomis-Alexandre, his wife, and Mathieu Oysselet, Chef Vincent Gomis uses the freshest local ingredients in every colorfully plated dish. Infused with the flavors of the South of France and the Mediterranean, the menu includes an abundance of seafood dishes, many of which I sampled. I couldn’t get enough of the fresh ceviche, seared tuna, and lobster medallions.

However, if you don’t fancy fish, there are plenty of other items on the menu to try. Standouts include duck breast with jerk spices, mango chutney, and sweet potato fries, lamb loin with green olive tapenade and eggplant caviar, and broccoli pesto pasta with lemon confit and pistachio broccolini.

SPECIALTY TABLES

Adding to the restaurant’s allure, Amis St Barths has several specialty tables available to reserve that are perfect for celebrating an anniversary, a birthday, or any special occasion.

Love St. B’s Table – Set on the beach in a secluded location, you will find the most romantic table for two in St. Barths. Dine on a personalized three-course menu that comes with two glasses of champagne.

Sparkling Table – This festive dinner menu is paired with champagne only, of course! Your private table for 4-12 guests is set under the stars at a seaside pergola. In addition to a three-course menu, you can create your own champagne cocktail.

Chef’s Table – Perhaps one of the most unique settings, the Chef’s Table gives you a front-row seat in the heart of the kitchen. Go behind the scenes to watch as the Chef cooks your meal.

AMIS PLAGE

Enjoy lunch with your toes in the sand at Amis Plage, which is situated directly on the beach. Start your meal with the burrata tomato carpaccio, steamed artichoke served with vegetables, aioli, or braised octopus. Then, pair it with a glass of rose and the truffle pizza or a classic burger with cheese which is melted tableside by your server using a hand-held kitchen torch.A tip of the hat to the boutique staff as well. As we sat under the umbrellas, using the boardwalk as a runway, they strutted their stuff past the tables showing off the latest trends in chic Saint Barthelemy fashion. So naturally, I wanted to buy every stylish dress they showcased.

RELATED: Port Day: St. Barthelemy, French West Indies

Whether you are staying at Le Barthélemy, at a villa on the island, or just visiting St. Barths for the day, your table at Amis is calling.

Celebrity Apex Sets Sail on Inaugural Cruise

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 2, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale played host to a special event today as Celebrity Cruises’ new ship Celebrity Apex kicked off its inaugural Caribbean season. After the official naming ceremony, the ship will begin sailing rotating Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries with calls on Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, Belize, Grand Caymans and others.

The ship’s naming ceremony was led by Godmother Reshma Saujani, the founder of the non-profit Girls Who Code and author of the bestselling book “Brave, Not Perfect.” She was joined on stage by Chairman and CEO of the Royal Caribbean Group Richard Fain and Celebrity Cruises President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo.

“We are elated to welcome Celebrity Apex to our family of magnificent vessels that push the boundaries of what’s possible on a cruise ship,” said Richard Fain. “As we welcome guests back to the seas aboard the newest Edge class ship, we are excited to deliver the very best vacation experience that is the hallmark of every Celebrity cruise.”

We all had to wait a little longer to get on board thanks to the pandemic, as noted by Lisa Lutoff-Perlo in her comments, but the end result was well worth it.

“Celebrating Celebrity Apex is certainly long overdue and it’s a day I have been waiting to celebrate for quite a long time – 581 days, to be exact. This stunning ship truly represents a new standard in new-luxury travel, and we can’t wait for our guests to finally experience it for themselves,” said Celebrity Cruises President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo. “As we say in our new brand campaign, we know guests will not only, ‘Journey WonderFULL,’ aboard this beautiful ship, but that she will also be the industry’s most talked about new ship.”

Reshma Saujani and Girls Who Code

Founded in 2012, Girls Who Code is a nonprofit with the goal of supporting and educating women in computer sciences so they have the skills they need to excel in a traditionally male-dominated sector. Celebrity chose Reshma Saujani as Apex‘s Godmother as the cruise line is also hard at work to reduce the gender gap at sea. The cruise line will also offer interactive beginner coding activities from the Girls Who Code curriculum as part of their onboard Camp at Sea program.

RELATED: Captain Kate McCue Named Captain of the Upcoming Celebrity Beyond

“I can’t think of anyone better to serve as Godmother for this ship than the incredible Reshma Saujani,” said Lutoff-Perlo. “Reshma is a visionary, leading the charge to challenge stereotypes and inspire a whole new generation of girls and women to bravely pursue tech jobs; just as Celebrity is working to close the gender gap at sea, growing our percentage of women serving as bridge officers to 30 percent in an industry where the average is 2 percent. It is Reshma’s game-changing spirit that makes her the perfect Godmother for a game-changing ship like Celebrity Apex.”

For Saujani, helping get more women into positions of prominence and leadership is exactly what her nonprofit is all about.

“It’s both thrilling and humbling to serve as the Godmother of Celebrity Apex,” said Saujani. “Similar to the mission of Girls Who Code, which is centered around closing the gender gap in tech, Celebrity is leading the way to create a more diverse future in the cruise industry. The brand’s commitment to the cause is clear not only through the leadership of its President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, but in its incorporation of on-board STEM programming. I can’t think of a more inspiring place to learn about the wonders of the maritime industry than on board Celebrity Apex and Girls Who Code is honored to help in this effort.”

Have you booked your cruise on Celebrity Apex yet?

Who’s Cruising to Antarctica for the 2021 Total Solar Eclipse?

by Grant Balfour November 2, 2021
written by Grant Balfour

A trip to Antarctica to watch a total eclipse of the sun can be the voyage of a lifetime, traveling to the ends of the Earth in order to witness such an extreme astronomical event in an environment so stark and dramatic. On December 4, 2021, the path of totality – that is, the area in which the moon physically blocks the entire sun from view – passes over the icy seas of Antarctica, which means a ship is the best place to observe what is happening in the skies.

As we all know, 2021 has been a year full of changes, especially when it comes to travel plans. Porthole Cruise and Travel has been tracking which ships are sailing into Antarctic waters for an eclipse-watching cruise. The list below reflects the most recent, most accurate information our team can gather, and if anything changes, we’ll do our best to update it in a timely manner.

And if you’re dreaming of taking an eclipse cruise yourself but haven’t booked one this year, there will be other opportunities in other dream-like destinations. Astronomy writer Jamie Carter gives advice for booking the next total eclipse in his story, “Antarctica’s Incredible Eclipse,” in the current (12.2021) issue of Porthole Cruise and Travel.

Destination Immersion in the Greek Islands with Azamara

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 2, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

There’s really only one way to describe the Greek islands: picture-perfect.

From the immaculate white-washed homes to the crystal-clear water lapping the many sand beaches, these islands have developed a vivid allure that’s put them at the very top of destination bucket lists all over the world.

When it comes to exploring famous islands like Mykonos and Santorini or the smaller ones like Kavala and Thessaloniki, there’s no better way to do it than on a cruise vacation… particularly on a cruise line where the destinations are front and center. On Azamara, cruising the Greek islands is a delightful mix of blissful relaxation and enriching exploration. Despite the uncertainty with travel these days, Azamara is back and more ready than ever to provide high-quality cruise vacations in a safe and fun atmosphere.

What exactly does a Greek Islands cruise from Azamara look like? Let’s find out!

Azamara Cruises

Azamara Quest in Rhodes for a late-night stay, allowing guests to explore the destination at night. This is also where guests can experience the Destination Celebration – an exclusive night time event that brings the destination to life onboard | Photo: Azamara

Azamara’s 2022 Greek Island Cruises

It’s true that all cruises are not created equal. No offense to a spin around the Caribbean, but the history, culture and beauty of Greece’s famous islands make it a premier destination for a cruise vacation. Whether you’re looking to stroll through the Terrace of the Lions on ancient Delos, cook with a local on the Cretan countryside, or stay late enough to experience the sunset in Oia, Santorini, Azamara curates luxury cruise vacations with something for everyone.

Azamara’s focus on what they call Destination Immersion® experiences allows for a truly unique cruise vacation experience

What’s the point of visiting someplace new if you’re not going to really dive deep into the experience? Azamara’s focus on what they call Destination Immersion experiences allows for a truly unique cruise vacation experience where guests surround themselves with the culture, the food, and the landmarks of each port of call. Rather than spend all day aboard the ship, Azamara’s focus on late nights and overnights allows for exploration at night.

Discover Santorini

In Santorini, for example, guests can visit the village of Oia, perhaps the most picturesque in all the Greek Islands, and learn more about the history of the supervolcano lying just below the caldera. The Traditional Tastes of Santorini excursion brings guests to a traditional distillery and vineyard which began operating long before the island became a coveted stop for curious travelers. Santorini is one of the most popular late-night stays as the sunsets over the caldera are some of the best in the world and add to the island’s already immense charm.

Those with an appreciation for history will love the excursion to the ancient city of Akrotiri. Much like Pompeii in Italy, Akrotiri was buried under heaps of ash and rock during the Minoan eruption more than 3,600 years ago. Archaeologists began excavating the city a few decades ago and they’ve uncovered what was once one of the most advanced civilizations in the world. What stands out are the frescos still intact after thousands of years. The wall art and artifacts found in the rubble show the vibrant daily life of a civilized, refined Minoan society before their unfortunate demise.

Cruising to Mykonos

Called the “Island of the Winds”, Mykonos is celebrated as the gem of the Cyclades thanks to spectacular scenery, vibrant nightlife, and some of the best cuisine you’ll find in the region. Nothing highlights the flavors of Mykonos better than Azamara’s Culinary Walk shore excursion. Guests spend the day sampling Greek favorites like souvlaki, moussaka, baklava, and dolmadakia at five distinct eateries while walking the winding streets of Old Town Mykonos.

No cruise to Mykonos is complete without visiting the neighboring island of Delos, perhaps the most important island of all in ancient Greek mythology. The legendary birthplace of the gods Apollo and Artemis, Delos is now an archaeological site which has revealed the island’s ancient history as a major economic and spiritual center. Azamara guests arrive on Delos via ferry, and get to walk through landmarks like the Terrace of the Lions and the Temple of the Delians.

What Sets Azamara Cruises Apart from the Rest?

What other vacation offers the chance to visit a handful of Greece’s most incredible islands all while enjoying top-quality accommodations and cuisine? Only a cruise vacation! When it comes to cruise operators, Azamara is in a league of its own, thanks to their immersive approach and attention to detail.

Guests come for the destination, but they return for the crew

It’s the little things that stand out when you cruise with Azamara. You return from shore excursions to find ice water and cold towels waiting for you. Touches like these highlight Azamara’s professionalism and experience offering unique cruise vacations that go above and beyond expectations. Guests come for the destination, but they return for the cruse.

Part of the reason Azamara can curate such specific experiences is the size of their ships. All four ships in Azamara’s fleet hold 700 passengers. Small-ship cruising means being able to visit off-the-beaten path ports, and a higher staff-to-guest ratio means impeccable service tailored to the needs of each guest on board. The ratio is even better considering Azamara made the decision to cap the number of guests at 50 percent capacity until the COVID-19 pandemic is fully in the rearview.

Along with a reduced capacity, the cruise line has enhanced their sanitation and cleaning protocols and instituted an Explore Well at Sea program which outlines the changes on board — the most notable being that all guests must be fully vaccinated to sail with Azamara and every guest is given a rapid antigen test prior to embarkation.

Azamara Onward is Almost Here

If a cruise to Greece is on your bucket list, there’s no better time to go; the newest ship in the Azamara fleet is scheduled for a number of cruises in the region in 2022. Azamara Onward is scheduled to set sail under the Azamara brand for the first time in the spring. Half the itineraries scheduled for Azamara Onward are country-intensive, with plenty of excursions offering full immersion into Greek life both now and in ancient times. The cruise line is adjusting some of their experiences for COVID-19, namely pausing their AzAmazing Evenings on shore and holding Destination Celebrations on board. These celebrations bring the culture and traditions of each place to the guests through an evening of local cuisine, music and performances.

The world is full of hidden gems and the Greek islands are among the brightest. Of all the lines offering cruises to the region, Azamara stands out thanks to its dedication to immersive experience and a commitment to detail throughout the trip.
