Visiting Southampton

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine April 4, 2023
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Almost 2 million people cruise from Southampton annually. However, many who come to the UK’s most popular cruise port rush to tourist destinations such as Stonehenge or Windsor Castle which involve hours-long journeys. What are they missing in this port city?

I grew up near Southampton and took the city’s sights for granted. Having since viewed the port as a cruise passenger, I realized that there’s much to see and do here that would appeal to those who have a day or two to linger.

City of Centuries
Although not immediately apparent, Southampton is an ancient city. Beneath the area in which my beleaguered soccer team plays was found one of Europe’s greatest hauls of Saxon artifacts. More obvious signs of the city’s history can be found at the Bargate, a grand stone gatehouse built into the medieval town walls circa 1180 CE. Follow a well-signposted walk along remnants of these immense walls and along the way you’ll come across Tudor buildings and the Westgate, through which Henry V marched his troops on his way to France and Agincourt.

Maritime history is a core part of Southampton’s identity. At Town Quay, you can see a memorial commemorating the Mayflower pilgrims who set off from here bound for America (Southampton’s 2,300-seat main theater is named after the famous ship). Sailing out of the city, you’ll pass the dock from where Titanic departed; there’s an impressive Titanic exhibition in SeaCity Museum, located in the Civic Centre just a 10-minute walk from the main train station. Five hundred and forty-ning of the crew members who perished in the Titanic disaster were from Southampton, and a grand memorial to the liner’s engineers can be seen in East Park, five minutes’ walk from SeaCity.

Southampton was a key departure point for WWII Normandy landings, as well as a manufacturing center for crucial Spitfire aircraft. You can view one of these famous planes in the Solent Sky aviation museum, just south-east of the city center and close to the vibrant Ocean Village area. Among the other aircraft on display are Southampton-built seaplanes, including a legendary record-holding racer.

The 13th- century God’s House Tower recently won an architecture award for its extensive yet sensitive restoration. It too can be found along the city walls, over the road from where ferries depart for the Isle of Wight. Inside the Tower you’ll find art exhibitions and glimpses of the city’s past (free entry). Art galleries can be found throughout Southampton, but the largest is Southampton City Art Gallery, located close to SeaCity museum. Entry is free and the collections include famous 18th – and 19th -century British paintings.

Happening Now
Moving on to culture of a different sort, Southampton is home to 33,000 university students; the nightlife here is therefore plentiful and varied. Vying for the title of Southampton’s oldest pub, the Duke of Wellington is a fine place to stop for a pint — 530 years of customers can’t be wrong.

Visiting architecturally-celebrated Westquay feels as though you’ve already stepped onto one of the large cruise ships that dock nearby. There’s a huge choice of entertainment and dining options and the mall has a fine selection of shops, not least John Lewis — the perfect place to buy gifts. From John Lewis’s cafe you’ll get a good view of the cruise terminals, there’s an even better view from the canteen in Southampton’s prominent IKEA.

Sights Nearby
I realize that I’ve now suggested enough activities to fill multiple days. If you’ve yet more time, I highly recommend taking the 15-minute train journey from Southampton Central to ….

Regent Seven Seas Epicurean Perfectionist

by Judi Cuervo April 3, 2023
written by Judi Cuervo

Taste, Travel and Explore the World!

While the eyes of the cruise industry are focused on Fort Lauderdale’s Seatrade Cruise Global 2023, I find myself further south in Miami, boarding the glorious Seven Seas Splendor for a half-day event that will acquaint me with the line’s newly-announced Epicurean Perfection culinary program.

Cruise fans know Regent Seven Seas Cruises as the “all-inclusive” luxury line.  With a fleet of five sumptuous, sensibly-sized ships (no more than 750 guests), and a sixth—Grandeur–due to launch in November, a sailing aboard Regent Seven Seas includes round-trip flights, transfers, unlimited shore excursions, premium spirits and fine wines, gratuities, wi-fi and even valet laundry service!  In fact, there has been so much attention paid to Regent’s all-inclusive pricing scheme that it often seems as though the incredible cuisine that’s always been offered on this 31-year-old luxury line takes a backseat.

Well, that’s about to change.

Now, in addition to five superb dining venues aboard Seven Seas Splendor, each with exciting new dishes as well as those that are proven favorites, guests may immerse themselves in their destinations through Epicurean Perfection, culinary experiences, both on board and ashore, that include carefully-curated shore excursions, tours, hands-on cooking classes, demonstrations, talks and tastings.

NOW WE’RE COOKIN’…AND MORE!

Today, Chef Kathryn Kelly and Chef Noelle Barille hold court in Seven Seas Splendor’s oceanview Culinary Arts Kitchen equipped with top-of-the-line induction cooktops, stainless steel sinks and a comprehensive collection of cooking essentials.   Aboard Splendor, Explorer and, soon, Grandeur, The Culinary Arts Kitchen is the hub of Epicurean Perfection with a wide range of classes taught by a faculty of 10 classically-trained chefs and instructors, like Culinary Institute of America honors graduates Kelly and Barille.  The $10 million Culinary Arts Kitchen is a beauty and a dedicated space that, according to Kelly, can’t be compared to cooking classes taking place in a cruise ship theater designed to stage shows or ship’s galley that is typically used to produce meals for 500 dining room guests.  It also, Kelly finds, creates a magical atmosphere where guests quickly connect through a shared love of food, wine and travel.

Classes, which kick off with a cocktail or celebratory drink, focus on cooking techniques as well as the creation of a meal (often, two appetizers, a main course and a dessert) unique to the region guests are sailing.  Other classes have included a deep dive into spices, the creation of the perfect cheese plate and its accompaniments, knife skills, and how to prepare fish seven different ways.  “Yesterday, since we were sailing through the islands and the New World, the topic was New World Mediterranean and the class was designed around the ingredients,” explained Kelly.  “We sprinkled in a history lesson, highlighting six ingredients that came from the New World and travelled across to Europe.  Most people, for example, believe the tomato came from Europe, thanks to Italy and pizza, but the Italians didn’t make pizza until the 1800s and the tomato didn’t arrive in Europe until Columbus and the explorers landed in 1492.  We like classes to focus on technique but we also encourage guests to think about ingredients, food and cooking in a different way.”

Starting in June, even kids can join in the fun during Regent Seven Seas’ Alaska sailings!  A class, currently being developed, pairs a child with a parent or grandparent, the little one acting as chef and the parent or grandparent, sous chef.   “So many kids think everything comes in a plastic wrapper but now, as they’re making their frittata, they’ll learn how to cut vegetables and decide which cheese they’d like to use, or they’ll decide between zucchini or carrots for their muffins, cranberries or raspberries, honey or sugar.  It’s all about introducing them to important ingredients and decisions.”

TAKING IT ON THE ROAD

How is olive oil made in Italy?  How is meat butchered in Uruguay?  How does aquaculture occur?

Epicurean Explorations goes far beyond a chef-led market trip to acquire ingredients that will find their way onto your plate at dinner that evening.  Instead, its series of shore experiences, personally curated and led by Kelly, Barille and the rest of the Regent Seven Seas culinary team, is researched and tested to provide an insider experience.  Available in 65 locations, you might gather the insights of a tequila sommelier in Mexico, learn about fish farms in the Faroe Islands or, in Juneau, enjoy a lavish lunch at a highly-touted restaurant that is typically open only for dinner, the chef sharing her secrets for selecting fish.

Select from Epicurean Explorer Tours of ancient markets and world-class restaurants. Sip delectable wines in Bordeaux or whiskies in Ireland.  Learn how to make canoli from a Sicilian pastry master. Witness traditional cooking methods and taste local specialties.  With Regent Seven Seas, there’s literally a whole world of culinary delights to be discovered!

And for those who prefer to create their own epicurean exploration, Kelly and her team are a valuable and accessible resource throughout the sailing.  “The culinary team is very visible around the ship.  We’re the chefs that aren’t in the galley.  Instead, we’re walking around, speaking to guests all the time, providing suggestions on the best restaurants or places to visit that will appeal to those with a culinary interest.”

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

While Epicurean Perfection is offered during all sailings aboard each Regent Seven Seas ship, 11 Epicurean Spotlight Voyages that feature world-class chefs and masterful vintners have been planned, including an August 14, 2023 sailing with Chef Alain Roux, son of the legendary Michel Roux, and owner of The Waterside Inn, holder of 3 Michelin Stars for nearly 40 years.   Want to plan ahead?  Seinfeld fans, or those who like a heavy dose of entertainment with their culinary, won’t want to miss Seven Seas Grandeur’s August 14, 2024 sailing which features Chef Tommaso Barletta, known for his fine Italian restaurants across Southern California, along with Barletta’s buddy John O’Hurley (the popular Mr. Peterman character on Seinfeld).  (Visit https://www.rssc.com/Spotlight-Voyages for a full listing of Regent Seven Seas’ Epicurean Spotlight Voyages.)

Epicurean Perfection gives Regent Seven Seas’ guests a delicious taste of the world around them.  And I have no doubt, they’re going to eat it up!

Windstar Cruises Adds The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix As An Exclusive Excursion

by Porthole Cruise and Travel March 31, 2023
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Windstar Cruises is bringing guests a new Formula 1 excursion in the form of the 2023 season’s final race at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in November. This latest excursion is in addition to the cruise line’s long-standing F1 package, Rome & Prix du Monde of Monaco, which features the Monaco Grand Prix scheduled to begin from May 21-28 aboard its flagship, Wind Surf.

“I’m a huge fan of F1 racing, and with the sport experiencing its highest rating ever in the U.S., more and more of our Windstar customers are racing fans as well,” said Christopher Prelog, Windstar’s president. “When we were planning our first-ever sailings in the Middle East, which begin in November, I had hoped a 2023 race date would overlap. And luck us: our inaugural Middle East voyage aligns with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. It’s a green flag for Windstar’s sailing in a new, exciting region and a checkered flag for the 2023 racing season…a perfect fit.”

The Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2023 is a Windstar-exclusive shore excursion and will be a part of the cruise line’s first voyage in the region on board Star Legend.

Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Package Includes:

  • Premium grandstand seats for the time trials and the race
  • Transfers to and from Yas Marina Circuit
  • English-speaking coordinators

Oceania Cruises Reveals Broadway Entertainment Aboard New Vista Ship

by Julie Bouchner March 30, 2023
written by Julie Bouchner

In light of Oceania Cruises’ newest ship, Vista, the brand revealed new entertainment options to go hand in hand with the new dining offerings and luxury accommodations when the ship launches in May 2023!

“With Vista, our first new ship in more than a decade, we have worked thoughtfully on how to raise the bar even higher on ourselves in every department,” said Frank A. Del Rio, President of Oceania Cruises. “Long renowned for our stunning design, exquisite culinary offerings and intriguing itineraries, it was time to put the same ‘wow’ into our entertainment programming. This new lineup is groundbreaking for us, and these three new productions are just the beginning. We are extremely excited to unveil our never-before-seen series of elevated entertainment for our guests to enjoy aboard Vista.“

NEW ENTERTAINMENT FEATURES

Guests aboard can enjoy three popular broadway shows, Headliners, The Anchor Inn, and Into the Night, featuring songs from well-known artists and contemporary dance numbers led by “Dancing with the Stars” choreographer Britt Stewart.

“I’m honored to have the opportunity to develop innovative shows for Oceania Cruises, pushing limits on creativity and theatrics, assembling a star-studded team with credentials spanning television, movies, Broadway, the West End and beyond, resulting in programs that are truly fresh and fun for Vista,” shared Kai Alan Carrier, Director of Artistic Theatrical Entertainment, a new role created at Oceania Cruises to elevate entertainment offerings. “Knowing that our guests love recognizable songs and, more importantly, are lively and adventurous, I leaned forward with our offerings. The goal was to truly offer entertainment from a new perspective, which I know we have achieved.”

descriptions of new entertainment

The ship will feature three productions: Into the Night, Headliners, and The Anchor Inn. Below is additional information on the entertainment features provided by Oceania Cruises.

Into the Night, choreographed by renowned “Dancing with the Stars” pro dancer and choreographer Britt Stewart, is a dance-centric show featuring an unexpected mix of dance, style, and design meant to invoke the excitement of the Video Music Awards, the glamour of “American Idol” and the high-energy drive of “Dancing with the Stars.” The contemporary elegance of the show is inspired by the essence of Vista herself. Sophisticated and exciting, Into the Night will leave audiences awestruck as it combines dance with design, exuding a powerful feeling only a live stage show can offer.

Headliners take guests on a VIP concert journey showcasing a stunning cast performing some of the most recognizable songs in the world. Celebrating the music, not just the artist, Headliners approaches pop favorites in an inspirational way that is simply designed to be a great time. Led by Vista‘s talented onboard vocalists, complete with fun choreography, guests will have an unforgettable night with music from some of their favorite artists, such as Cher, Celine Dion, the Bee Gees, and Adele, in a way they have never seen before.

The Anchor Inn is a light-hearted UK-centric song-and-dance performance with a sprinkle of West End flare. Set in the lively Anchor Inn Pub, a group of regulars celebrates good times, sporting losses, and romantic wins to the tune of chart-topping hits by artists like Dusty Springfield, Rod Stewart, Madness, Shirley Bassey, and Tom Jones. This hand-clapping, toe-tapping production will leave guests feeling decidedly British, no matter where they are sailing.

The Music Triangle will open later this year, telling the story of today’s music.
