written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Fan of horse racing and cruising are in luck! American Queen Voyages has announced a 2023 Kentucky Derby Cruise on board their new paddlewheel ship American Countess.

The nine-day sailing will include a pre-cruise hotel stay at the Brown Hotel in Louisville and highlights include competing in the annual Great American Steamboat Race, onboard lectures about horse racing, a taste of Kentucky cuisine with Culinary Ambassador Regina Charboneau and there are even a limited number of VIP 2023 Kentucky Derby ticket packages available for guests.

“The Kentucky Derby Cruise is one of my favorite sailings as it captures the magical energy of Louisville during race week,” explains John Waggoner, founder and chairman of American Queen Voyages. “Last year’s special cruise conflicted with my obligations at the launch of our new Alaska expedition ship Ocean Victory but  I look forward for 2023, cheering on the American Countess in the Great American Steamboat Race and celebrating all the festivities.”

Kentucky Derby Cruise Itinerary

American Queen Voyages’ newest paddlewheeler, the 245-guest American Countess, will sail the Ohio River from Louisville to Cincinnati with stops in Madison, Brandenburg, and Augusta. The first shipboard highlight of the itinerary will be the Great American Steamboat Race in downtown Louisville as the American Countess joins the Belle of Louisville and Belle of Cincinnati on Wednesday, May 3.

Guests sailing during the Derby Cruise  watch the race from the deck of the ship as it starts and ends at the Clark Memorial Bridge in Louisville. Other events related to the Kentucky Derby include including firework displays, parades, running races, a hot air balloon event, fashion shows, bed races and concerts.

New for the 2023 Kentucky Derby Cruise, Culinary Ambassador Regina Charboneau will join guests onboard to take part in cooking demonstrations of regional culinary favorites like Louisville Hot Brown, Cincinnati Skyline Chili and Pittsburgh pierogies. An Interview With a Caribbean Reef Shark

by Bernard "Klute" Schober August 24, 2022
written by Bernard "Klute" Schober

Editor’s Note: It is with great sadness we report that Bernard “Klute” Schober passed away while hiking in his hometown of Phoenix, AZ in July. Klute was a prominent slam poet and diver known for his generosity, jovial nature and love of sharks. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.

On a sunny September’s day in Nassau, I managed to float down with a Caribbean reef shark, where, over gin and tonic immobility, we discussed life toward the top of the trophic pyramid.

Klute Schober: Thanks for swimming by today.

Caribbean Reef Shark: No problem, it was on my way to my next island.

KS: “Caribbean” is pretty broad; where do you actually live?

CRS: From blue Bahama waters to the Mexican surf! We’re unique to this part of the ocean, but sharks are found in every ocean, except the Southern Antarctic.

KS: Some of our readers might be distressed about that.

CRS: They shouldn’t be! Unless you’re a chonky grouper, you’re not on the menu. We’re just curious — if anything, you intimidate us. We’ll swim away before you even notice we’re there.

KS: You’re never aggressive?

CRS: Well, don’t try to grab onto us for a ride. That selfie you get may not be the one you want.

…

KS: You mentioned “sustainability.” I imagine as a threatened species that’s important to you. How can our readers help?

CRS: Don’t buy wildlife souvenirs! Sharks’ jaws and tooth necklaces belonged to friends of mine! And coral? Ooof. That’s my home. Oh — and ask how your seafood was caught!

KS: What else should we know about you?

CRS: Lots! Even though we live near 44 million humans, you all know so little about us. You’re still trying to figure out where we mate, give birth, how long we live. We’re on Shark Week so much, you’d think our story’s been told, but really — your scientists have barely scratched the surface of the mysteries of all [waves fins] this. I urge you to get to know the real us — through responsible shark tourism!

Viking Osiris Named in Luxor, Egypt

by Porthole Cruise and Travel August 23, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

The newest Viking river cruise ship was named at a ceremony in Luxor, Egypt yesterday with some very special guests in attendance. Viking Osiris is set to sail the Nile River with guests for the first time after Viking’s first ever ceremonial godfather, George Herbert, the 8th Earl of Carnarvon, offered a blessing of good fortune and safe sailing for the ship. The ceremony was also attended by Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking.

Designed specifically to navigate the Nile, Viking Osiris was built at Massara shipyard in Cairo and will sail Viking’s Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary which brings guests from Cairo to six other unique places in Egypt along the famous river. Highlights include the new Grand Egyptian Museum, the Temples of Luxor and Karnak, the tomb of Nefertari in the Valley of the Queens, and the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings.

“Egypt has always drawn curious explorers for its rich history and ancient antiquities, and ever since we first began operating on the Nile River in 2004, our guests continue to be amazed by the country’s many cultural treasures. Today we are pleased to officially welcome the Viking Osiris to our growing fleet on the Nile River, which allows us to welcome even more curious explorers to this incredible destination,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking. “During this milestone year for Egypt, we are also very grateful for the continued close friendship with the Carnarvon family, and that Lord Carnarvon has honored us by serving as the first godfather in our history.”

The 8th Earl of Carnarvon, Godfather of the Viking Osiris

The 8th Earl of Carnarvon is the son of Henry Herbert, 7th Earl of Carnarvon, and Jeanie Margaret Wallop (1935–2019). His mother was born in Big Horn, Wyoming, to Oliver Wallop, who was the brother of the 8th Earl of Portsmouth. The 8th Earl of Carnarvon was educated at Eton College and St. John’s College, Oxford. He succeeded to the title of Earl of Carnarvon when his father passed away on September 11, 2001.

He lives at Highclere Castle with the 8th Countess of Carnarvon, and they run the estate and business together. He is a keen horseman and sits on the board of the Historic Houses Association (HHA). He also takes a considerable interest in conservation and farming and has been an investor in start-up technology businesses. Together, the Carnarvons are Viking’s first “godparents,” as Lady Carnarvon is godmother of Viking’s newest ocean ship, the Viking Mars, as well as the river ship, the Viking Skadi.

RELATED: A VIKING HAS CONQUERED THE GREAT LAKES

“It is a great honor to be asked to be godfather to the Viking Osiris, one of the most beautiful river vessels to have ever graced the Nile. This is especially the case in the centenary year of my great-grandfather’s discovery of the tomb of the Pharaoh Tutankhamun, and no doubt he and my great-grandmother, Lady Almina, would have been delighted to board the Viking Osiris had it been sailing in their day,” said Lord Carnarvon. “The 5th Earl of Carnarvon was one of the great explorers and excavators of his time, and today you may join in his love of the glories of ancient Egypt, all in the exceptional comfort and style of the Viking Osiris.”

About Viking Osiris

The new ship holds just 81 guests in 41 staterooms and features an indoor/outdoor Aquavit Terrace, french balconies, hotel-style beds and an overall look and feel that Viking cruisers will recognize immediately.

Viking Osiris joins the Viking Ra, which launched in 2018 and soon they will be joined by Viking Aton, an identical sister ship to Viking Osiris, in 2023.

During an intimate celebration earlier today in Egypt, we welcomed our newest river ship, the Viking Osiris.

A proud day for all of us in the Viking family, we welcome you to enjoy some of the highlights from this momentous event. #MyVikingStory pic.twitter.com/weZLDIxetz

Royal Caribbean Set to Welcome Unvaccinated Guests

by Porthole Cruise and Travel August 22, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Another cruise line is allowing unvaccinated guests to sail on board, so long as they still test negative for COVID-19 prior to cruising. Royal Caribbean International announced today that starting Sept. 5, the cruise line will welcome all guests – unvaccinated and vaccinated – to sail on board pending local regulations for each itinerary.

Cruises to or from Australia, Bermuda, Canada or Singapore still require guests to be vaccinated, but most cruises embarking from the U.S. will be open to all.

The full list of updated protocols are below:

  • Unvaccinated guests can cruise with negative results from any commercially available test, including self-tests.
  • No testing is required for vaccinated guests sailing on cruises that are nine nights or less.
  • For all sailings, guests 5 years old and younger have no vaccine or testing requirements.
  • On sailings of 10-plus nights, guests – vaccinated or unvaccinated – must provide a negative test within three days of their sailing date.

On sailings of 10-plus nights, guests – vaccinated or unvaccinated – must provide a negative test within three days of their sailing date.

Most major cruise brands have now updated their COVID-19 protocols to allow unvaccinated guests to sail so long as they test negative prior to sailing while vaccinated guests can skip the testing altogether. A number of Carnival Corporation brands have adopted a similar policy along with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings.

If you’re planning on sailing with Royal Caribbean soon, does this make your embarkation easier? Let us know in the comments!

The Splendid Renewal of Saxony, Germany

by Toby Saltzman August 22, 2022
written by Toby Saltzman

A shard of concrete etched with graffiti — my souvenir of the Berlin Wall found shortly after it tumbled — symbolizes how Saxony, the former East Germany, has risen above its cultural divide from the West that lasted 28 years after WWII. Since German reunification in 1990, Berlin has gained global attention for its architectural and cultural revival, epitomized by the Brandendburg Gate, Reichstag’s glass dome, momentous museums and lively nightlife.

Beyond Berlin, Saxony deserves notice for the splendid renewal that has taken it from the dark division to its vibrant present. For historic perspective,  before the Second World War, Saxony was Germany’s strongest, most prosperous region. Dresden was the country’s richest and most beautiful city. Cosmopolitan Leipzig was a European center of commerce and music. The medieval city of Gorlitz — originally the splendid center of Prussian Upper Lusatia — was the commercial trading core that vied with Dresden for the most advanced esprit of arts, theater, and craftmanship.

Dresden Rising

When I arrived from Berlin in the indigo of night, Dresden was a magical sight, its distinctive skyline illuminated and reflecting on the Elbe River. Turning into the city square, I was struck by the towering height of the Frauenkirche, the Church of Our Lady.  After being decimated by Allied bombs during the end of World War II, its reconstruction idealizes the spirit of Dresden rising from the ashes of war. The floodlit restorations of the Baroque architecture housing the Semper Opera, and the palaces turned into hotels, government buildings, and museums exemplified the city’s reinvention.

Later that night, dining in Alte Meister restaurant on butternut and scallop soup, sea bream, and passion fruit crème brûlée, I realized that my earlier memories of Saxony being dull, grim, and grey — in everything from architecture to cuisine — would be rewritten.

In brilliant light the next morning, Dresden beamed with meticulous reconstructions. While the Communists had controlled East Germany, they purposely preserved most devastation to symbolize the evils of war.  After reunification, the Saxony and German governments intentionally rebuilt Dresden to signal atonement for Nazi horrors.

On a tour of the Old Masters Picture Gallery, 18th-century paintings by Bernard Bellotto, aka Canaletto, depicted Dresden’s evolution over time. Inside the Royal Palace, rooms and galleries brimming with priceless artifacts reflected 1,000 years of history.  Its Green Vault treasury, ballroom with gilded ceiling, and red throne room spoke of centuries of German artistry as well as lavish lifestyles. The Zwinger is the regal Baroque architectural complex started in 1709 by Elector Augustus II “The Strong,” who was then also King of Poland.  Incidentally, the virile elector/king, who was known to have fathered 300 illegitimate children, kept his mistresses elsewhere.  Exploring the park, we crossed the bridge from Saxony to Poland, viewing hilly groves of leafy trees kissed by the sun, the long ribbon of river, and the castle holding court over a pretty lake.

Saxony’s Scenic Countryside

On a day trip from Dresden, I hiked through Kromlau Park, famous for the Devil’s Bridge that casts a perfectly circular reflection in the river. The UNESCO World Heritage site of Muskau Park has a remarkable history as it straddles the Neisse River, which marks the border between Germany and Poland. From 1815 to 1844, Prince Hermann von Puckler-Muskau created this garden as an enclave of paradise. It’s a lovely park to linger in, perfectly laid out and pleasing from every viewpoint. Inside the castle, historic exhibits include letters and photos that make one wonder about Prince Hermann’s convention-defying life. An author, military leader, and landscape architect, he married….

Going Forward with Azamara Onward

by Mark Orwoll August 18, 2022
written by Mark Orwoll

Welcome to Azamara Onward. Now get off the ship!

Don’t take that the wrong way; take it as a gift. Azamara’s mission is to give its guests the one thing no one ever has enough of: time. Time to explore unusual, offbeat destinations. Time to have a late dinner at the cute little brasserie you saw that morning on the shore excursion. Time, even, to do nothing at all.

If that sounds like an unusual philosophy for a cruise line, remember that Azamara is an outlier in the industry, and has been since its launch under the Royal Caribbean corporate umbrella in 2007. The emphasis is on destination immersion and country-intensive voyages. Consider: Most cruise ships usher their passengers onto tour buses at 8:00 a.m. (not even enough time for a decent breakfast!) and pour them back on board by 5:00, after which the ship may not even see land again for another 30 hours. Azamara, on the other hand, seems to be asking, “Why the rush?”

From R-Three to Onward

The newest addition to Azamara’s fleet of luxury small ships is Azamara Onward, which debuted in May 2022 after its christening in Monte Carlo. Cruise geeks will eagerly tell you the origins of Onward, and how it recently completed a renovation to erase any trace of its previous life as Pacific Princess, operated by Princess Cruises until 2021. In its earliest incarnation, the ship was known by the almost Orwellian moniker R-Three, the third in the fabled R-class ships built for Renaissance Cruises, which went belly-up in 2001. R-Three, today Azamara Onward, is identical to its three Azamara sister ships.

The eight original R-class ships are now evenly dispersed between Azamara and its cross-town rival in the luxury small-ship category, Oceania. There are no others. How, then, can Azamara ever hope to expand? Carol Cabezas, Azamara’s president, is sly about revealing future plans. When I recently suggested to her that they probably would have to kidnap one of the Oceania vessels, she discreetly replied, “We’re exploring all options.”

At the risk of being labeled an unreliable narrator, I will backtrack and rephrase my description of the four Azamara ships as being identical: The newly launched Onward has a special something none of the others has: the Atlas Bar. The goal there is to prep and serve artisanal cocktails that no one on earth has ever drunk or even heard of. How about a Grand Bazaar (Turkish yeni raki, fresh lemon juice, arugula syrup), a Mumbai Hug (chili-infused Grey Goose vodka, fresh lime juice, ginger syrup, lime syrup, cilantro) or a Heat of Azamara (Grey Goose vodka, fresh strawberry puree, fresh lime juice, passion fruit nectar, Galliano, absinthe)? Imagine, someone actually gets paid to come up with these concoctions. The space itself is intimate, tucked away, and has the late-night atmosphere of a fashionable London private club.

Considering its small size (684 passengers), Onward has plenty of nooks like that. The Den, with a bar called Spirits, is another such just-us place, especially with Vasi at the Keys (as the ship’s daily newsletter insists on calling the pianist who plays there). The mononymical Vasi is more than just an anonymous lounge pianist drifting from “Strangers in the Night” to “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head.” She chats with the crowd as if with friends (and occasionally lets them sing abbreviated versions of songs, karaoke-style). She transforms the Den into a sophisticated Broadway piano bar where it’s always 1:00 a.m. and the audience doesn’t want to leave.

Let’s say a passenger decided to stay on board one day while their fellow guests were off exploring some charm-filled, medieval Provençal village. I’m not recommending that, but there are plenty of times during a cruise when someone doesn’t necessarily want to go anywhere. Options exist.

One could join a trivia team to compete against one’s fellow layabouts in, say, the music category. (I lost the Motown trivia contest to an English couple. An English couple!) One afternoon I watched the entertainment staff compete against the kitchen team in a cake-decorating competition. Guess who won? (“If anyone wants a slice, please help yourself,” said cruise director Eric De Gray, pointing to his lopsided pastry, generously covered in frosting, fruit, and, I’m guessing, Jujubes. “I’m sure it tastes better than it looks.”) Or point yourself in the direction of the swimming pool, twin Jacuzzis, shuffleboard court on the Sun Deck, board games in the Card Room, day-drinking indoors at Discoveries or outdoors at the Pool Bar, and dining at any of seven restaurants (everything from the Mosaic coffee bar for cappuccino and pastries to the buffet at Windows to the elegant, wood-paneled (and extra-charge) Prime C steakhouse.

But again, why would you?!

Destination-Immersive Cruising

Even on my short, 4-night, pre-inaugural cruise from Barcelona to Monte Carlo via Cinque Terre, the adventures ashore were the heavy attraction. In the pastel-painted seafront village of Porto Venere, Italy, Azamara took over the town, planting opera singers next to ancient churches and an accordionist at the plaza. Guests were proffered lavish pours of prosecco and platters of prosciutto on a pier overlooking the handsome seaport. In Monterosso al Mare, the largest of the five towns of Cinque Terre, a guide led our small group up an ancient cobbled lane to a hillside winery, where we were treated to a wine tasting and light lunch on a covered patio overlooking lush vineyards and fruit-laden lemon trees.

Azamara has built its reputation on such unconventional and unexpected “AzAmazing” experiences.

The ship also spent one night in port at Monte Carlo — long enough for at least one bartender in town to know me by name. (Cue the wife: “Not that unusual for you, Mark.”) Azamara claims it has more late departures and overnights in port than any other cruise line. So go ahead and linger over the Rioja in the late-night tapas bar; no need to hurry back to the ship. In most cases, passengers don’t even have to concern themselves with tender schedules; at 30,277 gross registered tons, Azamara Onward, like its sisters, is small enough to dock in most of the ports it visits.

Some industry observers wondered what, if anything, would change when Royal Caribbean Group sold Azamara to Sycamore Partners, a New York-based private equity firm, in March 2021. But if any Azamara fans were wary of the transition, their concern—so far, at least—seems misplaced. Carol Cabezas, who was named chief operating officer of the line in 2017 and president in 2021, seems likely to carry on Azamara’s goals and traditions. If anything, she’s even expanding on them. Cabezas recently announced that Onward would be the first Azamara ship to offer a world voyage — more than 40 countries across 155 nights, January 4 to June 9, 2024. Until then, the ship will spend the summer in the Caribbean, Central America, and South America, and the fall and winter roaming the Mediterranean. It’s a wonder some wag hasn’t already rechristened the Onward the Wayward.

“The addition of Azamara Onward has given us so many itinerary options we didn’t have before,” she said.

But I have to cut this short. Vasi at the Keys has (somewhat reluctantly) said I could sing Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer,” and will even let me hold the microphone.

But one verse only!

One of the newest cruise lines sailing is poised for a bright future after securing $550 million in new funding from new and existing investors. Virgin Voyages announced the funding in a press release today and executives from the cruise line say it points to not just a bright future for the cruise line, but the industry as a whole as well!

The new capital was led by funds and accounts managed by BlackRock and includes new external financing and additional capital from existing investors including Bain Capital Private Equity and Virgin Group. Virgin Voyages has also received additional, continued support from its existing lenders. The goal is to use the cash infusion to continue the execution of its growth strategy and further strengthen its financial position as cruise demand continues to gain momentum.

“We have created an incredible product that both our investors and consumers truly believe in, and this additional capital comes at a time when we’re looking forward to exponential growth that will, in turn, help us achieve what we set out to accomplish,” said Tom McAlpin, CEO of Virgin Voyages.

Cruise Bookings are Up

Virgin Voyages has seen significant growth in bookings over the past six months and they’re saying this year is set to see a strong return across the industry as cruising sails back toward pre-pandemic levels.

Carnival Cruise Line Relaxes COVID-Testing Protocols

by Porthole Cruise and Travel August 15, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Carnival Cruise Line has new pre-cruise COVID testing protocols that make it easier for guests to enjoy their cruise vacation. Changes include no testing for vaccinated guests on sailings less than 16 nights, and eliminating the exemption request process for unvaccinated guests, who will only need to show a negative test result at embarkation. The new protocols are effective for cruises departing on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2022 and after.

“Our ships have been sailing very full all summer, but there is still room for more of our loyal guests, and these guidelines will make it a simpler process, and make cruising accessible for those who were not able to meet the protocols we were required to follow for much of the past 14 months,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “We’ve got lots happening, with Carnival Luminosa and Carnival Celebration joining our fleet this November and more to come in 2023. Whatever the ship, homeport or itinerary that works for you, our great onboard team is ready to deliver a fun vacation – something we all look forward to even more nowadays!”

New Carnival Cruise Line Testing Requirements

The full list of changes to Carnival Cruise Line’s testing protocols are below:

  • Vaccinated guests must continue to provide evidence of their vaccination status prior to embarkation. Pre-cruise testing is no longer required, except for cruises to Canada, Bermuda, Greece and Australia (per local guidelines), and on voyages 16 nights or longer.
  • Unvaccinated guests are welcome to sail and are no longer required to apply for a vaccine exemption, except for cruises in Australia or on voyages 16 nights and longer.
  • Unvaccinated guests or those who do not provide proof of vaccination must present the results of a negative PCR or antigen test taken within three days of embarkation.
  • All policies are subject to local destination regulations.

Guests under the age of five years are exempt from vaccination and testing requirements from the United States and under the age of 12 from Australia.

Duffy also explained that the cruise line is in the process of updating its website, communications, and processes, and sharing more details with guests and travel advisor partners to reflect these new, simplified policies. “We appreciate the patience of our guests and travel advisor partners as we update all materials, but the end result is a very positive one for all who are looking forward to cruising with us,” she said.

The Unique Wines and Vineyards of the Canary Islands

by Robin Goldsmith August 11, 2022
written by Robin Goldsmith

The Canary Islands are a favorite vacation destination and cruise ships regularly head there.  Yet not many visitors know that this sun-kissed archipelago with its beautiful beaches, volcanic landscapes, and busy bars, 60 miles west of the coast of Morocco, is also a haven for wine lovers.

Wines of the Canary Islands

Wine has been made in the Canaries since the 15th century, when Europeans conquered the islands.  For many years after, British merchant and Royal Navy ships carried sweet, fortified Canary wine to mainland Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Australia.  Millions of gallons of sack or malmsey, as it was called, were exported to the UK each year during the 16th and 17th centuries and enjoyed by royalty, aristocrats, and writers, including Shakespeare.

As desire for French and Portuguese wines began to grow in the 18th century, demand for Canary wine declined and most of the islands’ industry collapsed.  Now, with interest growing in more unusual, fresh, and savory styles, the islands’ vineyards offer something new for the modern wine lover.  They are completely different from anywhere else on Earth and none moreso than those found on the moon-like island of Lanzarote.

Literally Erupting onto the Wine Scene

Lanzarote is the oldest and the furthest northeast of the seven major Canary Islands.  It is thought to owe its name to a Genoese sailor, Lancellotto Malocello, who arrived there in the 14th century.

In 1730, a series of volcanic eruptions began which lasted six years. They destroyed the crop-producing central plains and created the lunar landscape we see today.  Around one third of the island (77 square miles) became covered with lava and ash, called picón.

Despite this devastation, the volcanic debris was found to have special properties. It proved particularly good for growing wine grapes.

Harsh climate, ingenious solutions

Lanzarote has a subtropical, semi-arid climate.  There is very little rainfall and no bodies of fresh water either.  However, moist Atlantic trade winds (alisios) blowing in from the northeast keep humidity levels on the island high, except during the occasional calima, a hot, dry wind blowing over from the Sahara.  The nutrient-rich picón is great at absorbing this scarce moisture, so can feed growing vines in otherwise impossible conditions. Consequently, the islanders devised ingenious methods of viticulture, which remain to this day.

Many vines are planted in the center of crater-like pits called hoyos.  These are dug deep into the soil, past the thick layers of picón and solidified volcanic lava.  The hoyos are surrounded by semi-circular stone walls called socos.  These protect the vines from wind and daytime heat while trapping humidity.

Alternatively, some growers use zanjas — rows of vines dug in trenches, protected by long stone walls — and some vines are planted in chabocos, naturally occurring volcanic fissures in the lava.

Native Grapes

There are five native grapes on the island.  The main one is malvasía volcánica, typically making white wines with tropical and citrus fruit notes; mineral, saline freshness; and bright acidity.  Diego also produces wines with high….

A Viking Has Conquered The Great Lakes

by Steve Leland August 10, 2022
written by Steve Leland

No, it’s not a burly, bearded guy wielding an ax but rather the brand new Viking Octantis cruise ship. This striking beauty has established her reign by capturing the bounty of nature in the majestic waters of the Great Lakes. Over the past 25 years Viking has established itself as a premier player in river and ocean cruising but is now initiating an expeditionary profile with the introduction of this new vessel.

An expedition is generally described as a journey taken for the purpose of learning something new and the intrepid itineraries of the Viking Octantis follow through with that initiative. The brand’s pervasive all-inclusive concept is full throttle and bolstered by the hallmark amenities that define a Viking cruise. In this case, they have upped the ante with complimentary excursions that are geared towards exploration and discovery carried out by a full complement of state of the art watercraft housed in the expanse of the ship’s amazing Hangar.

More than two dozen zodiacs stand at the ready for excursions that search coastal waters for wildlife and two, million-dollar lightning fast Special Operations Boats take guests on thrilling wilderness rides that stoke an adrenaline rush. A fleet of kayaks is launched for an enjoyable paddle fest and for indelible memories, two six passenger submarines probe sights below the surface. Need it be said again, all complimentary!

Led by an expedition team and an authoritative scientist, actual research is conducted both onboard and ashore for all to witness. Expedition Central is an accessible venue that provides unique opportunities to interact with the experts and gain insight into the idiosyncrasies of our planet. To satisfy inquisitive minds, engaging enrichment seminars are conducted in The Aula, a stunning auditorium with a giant multimedia screen that retracts revealing a massive window to the open sea.

Panoramic views abound from exceptional vantage points throughout the vessel. Sit in the comfort of the outdoor couches of the Finse Terrace warmed by a lava rock fire pit. Sneak down to water level in The Hide, a lounge in the bow of the ship with ceiling to floor windows or enjoy a cocktail in the Explorers Lounge with wrap around views supplemented by live music. It’s the place to see and be seen. The aptly named Living Room with tasteful leather furnishings and accoutrements and unfettered views of the passing views. The evenings feature entertainment by a talented classical music duo. Allow me rephrase that… an extremely talented classical duo!

I'm just loving the inviting spaces to relax in quiet comfort while your sail expedition voyages on #VikingOctantis. I've never seen an expedition ship like this. Well done, @VikingCruises. #MyVikingStory #FinseTerrace pic.twitter.com/eMR1oUnq0e

— John Roberts (@InTheLoopTravel) April 10, 2022

After a day of eye opening activity ashore, nothing beats returning to the pristine ship for pampering in the Nordic Spa and unlike other ships, there is no supplemental fee for enjoying the milieu of luxury features. Soak in the bubbling mineral enriched waters of the heated thermal pool. Detox in the steam room or sauna and then decompress on heated loungers. Chill out in the snow room or watch the sea pass by in the heated water of the semi open air Badestamp. It’s life unplugged without cost.

Of course it wouldn’t be a Viking cruise without emphasis on the culinary chops that are staples with the Viking brand.  Although technically a buffet, the World Cafe offers a diverse menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Seafood lovers will relish an evening in an adjacent area featuring an amazing raw bar with King Crab Legs, jumbo shrimp, seafood salads and of course freshly prepared sushi. Steak aficionados will appreciate grilled lunches and dining on aged Angus beef from The Grill. Mamsen’s features light bite specialties like Norwegian waffles, soups, sandwiches and pastries. Take advantage of full service alternative dining at no additional charge in The Restaurant or Manfredi’s, the ship’s deluxe Italian venue.  Complimentary fine wines and beer flow at lunch and dinner, all part of Viking’s inclusive concept.

It’s inexplicable why after 40 years of cruising we’ve never been to the Great Lakes but the itinerary of Viking Octantis provided an ideal opportunity to explore the virtually untouched waterways and coastal views shared by Canada and the United States. Alternating 7 night itineraries depart from Milwaukee, WI. and Thunder Bay, Ontario. The journey is a mix of small town character and mother nature’s enchantment minus big city bustle.

Without a car in sight enjoy the charm of Mackinac Island on a complimentary horse carriage ride or savor lunch at the magnificent Grand Hotel. Enter the Canadian waters of Georgian Bay amidst the 30,000 islands surrounding Parry Sound. In Killarney, you can hike the Lighthouse Trail along massive red granite boulders and experience a fish fry lunch at the impressive Canada House constructed out of massive logs. Frazier Bay provides an opportunity to cruise the world’s largest fresh water fjord or hike nature trails winding their way out from Okeechobee Lodge.

Squeezing through the locks near Sault Ste. Marie the ship enters Lake Superior for a visit to Silver Islet and the fascinating lore of the now submerged silver mine. Hike the Sleeping Giant trail or kayak below rock ledges before the final day and arrival in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Viking Octantis will sail the Great Lakes through September when it repositions to South America and ultimately Antarctica for the winter where she will be joined by her virtual twin, the new Viking Polaris. With expedition leadership combined with the warmth and hospitality of the ship’s crew, it’s not a stretch to envision the thrills of a foray through the ice and sights of Antarctica on these vessels of luxurious exploration.
