Service Dog Receives Holland America’s Five-Star Mariner Status

by Judi Cuervo October 28, 2022

Aboard Rotterdam VII, we’re all just barking mad…for Joska!

This morning, shortly after Rotterdam VII sailed under overcast skies into New York City following Holland America’s 150th Anniversary crossing, the line’s President Gus Antorcha and the ship’s captain, Werner Timmers, presented this 10-year-old black Labrador Retriever with the highest honor a Holland America fan can attain:  5-star Mariner status and a Platinum Medallion in recognition of cruising 700 days aboard Holland America.  The canine equivalent of a goodie bag, including a personalized Holland America water bowl and doggie treats, accompanied the presentation of the medallion.

Joska, a registered service dog and among the most well-traveled dogs in the world, began cruising Holland America in 2014 with her Dutch owners, Cornelia “Connie” and Cornelis Marinussen.  She has cruised more than 50 times aboard sailings that called at Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Europe, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean.

RELATED: HOLLAND AMERICA 150TH ANNIVERSARY SAILING TRIGGERS FOND MEMORIES

According to Cornelis, it is only because of Joska that the couple has been able to continue to indulge their passion for cruising and world travel, the dog’s keen abilities allowing Connie to confidently navigate the ships they sail and the ports they visit.  “Joska knows Holland America ships so well,” states Cornelis, “That she can confidently and directly lead us directly back to our ship even in the most crowded port!”

During the ceremony, Holland America president Gus Antorcha stated “Joska is the first service animal to achieve this lofty status and we wanted to honor her with an event that shows how special she is to everyone in our company.  Registered service animals are always welcome aboard Holland America Line ships and Joska has become a member of our family.”

While Joska seemed quietly touched by Antorcha’s words, it was on Captain Timmers that Joska lavished her greatest affection, leaping up to shower him with a series of enthusiastic doggie kisses while the gleaming platinum medallion hung from the ribbon around her neck.

Captain Timmers seemed genuinely delighted.

Variety Cruises Announces New Tahiti Cruises for 2023

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 27, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Variety Cruises has announced that they will launch two new cruises in Tahiti, marking the first time the company has ever operated there. The seven and ten-night cruises will set sail from Papeete Port in Tahiti with itineraries that include stops in the Society Islands of French Polynesia. The ship will have an intimate and private atmosphere, with a maximum capacity of just 49 passengers. The first cruise company to do so, Variety Cruises has also made headlines by adding a stop in Makatea to its itineraries.

“There is something about magical civilizations that has always intrigued me,” said the company’s CEO Filippos Venetopoulos. “Being Greek, of course this is something I grew up with, being surrounded by the wisdom of the ancient philosophers. French Polynesia also envelops my soul. Much like how Greece can capture you, these islands seem to give you something you never knew you needed. I couldn’t be more thrilled to share that with the world, and thus, create, a better life at sea, one cruise at a time.”

Cruising to Tahiti

Locals of the Tahitian Islands heavily embrace the concept of Mana, a life force and spirit that surrounds us. Visitors are encouraged to quickly embrace this concept upon arrival to best partake in the culture of the locals. Guests are encourage to island hop while in Tahiti, giving voyagers the opportunity to see all different types of landscapes, waterfalls on the high islands and the desert-like atolls where lagoons can even outsize the landmass.

“The Islands of Tahiti is pleased to offer a warm welcome (maeva) to Variety Cruises as they launch their new voyages this coming year,” said Kristin Carlson, managing director for Tahiti Tourisme North America. “We look forward to travelers coming to the destination to experience the Mana, or spirit of the islands, aboard their intimate yachts, perfectly suited for exploring our paradise.”

Guests will set sail on Panorama II, a 50-meter, two-masted motorsailer with a maximum capacity of just 49 guests for both of the company’s newest cruises. The vessel features 25 passenger cabins, inviting dining areas, a sunbathing deck and an outdoor bar. Variety Cruises highlights the benefits of traveling on a small boat with fewer people, including having access to smaller private beaches and secluded locations that larger cruise ships do not.

The seven-night cruise, Tahiti & the Pearls of French Polynesia, will make stops in Bora Bora, Huahine, Raiatea and Moorea. The cruise will launch next year on February 3, 2023 with rates from $2,490 USD per person, based on double occupancy, excluding port charges. The cruise will feature a few rare excursions for guests to choose from including a visit at the UNESCO protected site of ancient Marae (an open-air temple) of Taputapuatea, a snorkeling excursion where guests can swim with stingrays and sharks, an opportunity to feed the sacred blue-eyed eels of Faie Bay and various lagoon adventures.

Variety Cruises 10-night cruise, Tahiti, the Society & Tuamotu islands, will give guests a bit more time to discover the beauty of the Tuamotu islands. This cruise will take passengers through the same route or the seven-night cruise, but will add stops in the rarely visited Makatea, Rangiroa, Tetiaroa and Mo’orea. The company expects that the stop in the island of Makatea, described as a uniquely raised island of coral in French Polynesia, will quickly become a guest favorite.

Exploring Makatea

Makatea is home to limestone cliffs that tower over the coast, various species of endemic birds and limestone holes. Limestone holes are integral to Makatea’s history. In the early 20th century, phosphate reserves were found in the limestone holes on the island, and for over 50 years, the island was a center of a successful phosphate mining business. However, in the 1960s, the mining stopped and the island went from a population of thousands of inhabitants to just a few hundred. Today, Makatea is home to three species or endemic birds: the Makatea fruit dove, the imperial pigeon, and the reed warbler.

A few activities offered on this ten-night cruise include: a visit to a beach with rock pools and a grotto, an opportunity to swim deep inside a grotto into an underwater cave system that leads guests to a watery cathedral. Among some of the highlights of swimming through Makatea’s Vaimarui cave, guests can see the popular hanging elephant leg-shaped stalactite, which is accessible to all guests eager to jump in the clear water. The legend of the elephant leg- shaped stalactite claims that it brings happiness to all those who touch it.

This 10-night itinerary will run from January 13, 2023 through December 2023, with rates starting at $3,190 USD per person based on double occupancy, excluding port charges.

Offers and booking instructions:

* Cruise fares mentioned exclude shore excursions and port charges which are at $275 USD and $360 USD respectively for these cruises.

* Rates are full board and include buffet breakfast and two meals daily (no beverages included).

* For bookings made by November 10, 2022, cruisers get to enjoy free shore excursions (valid for select excursions) and free beverages with meals. Children up to 17 years old get to travel for free, sharing the parents’ cabin. Under this offer there will be no single supplement for single travelers.

* For bookings made by January 15, 2023, a 10% discount will be applied for cruises sailing from July through December 2023.

* Promotions do not apply on existing bookings and on group bookings.

Forward-Thinking Fashion to Help Heal the Planet

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine October 27, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Back to the Ocean

Oceans The Brand specializes in “ecolux swimwear for the free-spirited.” Every item they make consists of 100 percent recycled fibers … which means converting plastic bags, bottles, and other floating trash into smooth, luxurious fabric. Like all their shorts, the Moray swim trunks are lightweight, quick-drying, durable, and comfortable. Even better, they look good, too.

Adidas: A Mushroomier Fit

Adidas pioneered sustainable sneakers in 2015 with a pair of Ultraboosts made from an old gillnet pulled from the ocean. Now, their goal is to use only recycled polyester by 2024. The latest step in that direction: stylish Stan Smith Mylo shoes made from mycelium (basically, the root fibers of mushrooms). Instead of animal and synthetic leathers, these sneakers use material that it takes mushrooms about two weeks to grow.

G-Star

G-Star has been famous for sustainable fashions ever since they teamed up with singer Pharrell Williams, whose Bionic Yarn company turns plastic waste into textiles. Stylish pants like the 5620 3D Skinny Jeans are constructed out of comfortable, rugged denim that’s woven from cotton, polyester derived from recycled plastics (mostly PET bottles), and Tencel, a fiber derived from sustainably sourced wood pulp. They also look cool. Head Designer Pierre Morisset constructed the first 5620s to recreate jeans he’d spotted on a passing motorcyclist, whose pants had seen so much sun, wind, and rain that they’d molded perfectly to his legs.

It’s clean, refreshing, and crisp and our guests are really going to enjoy this exclusive production.”

The company chose a Pilsner for its celebratory drink due to its classic European style and widespread interest in craft brewing lovers worldwide.

Holland America 150th Anniversary Sailing Triggers Fond Memories

by Judi Cuervo October 25, 2022
written by Judi Cuervo
Porthole Cruise and Travel’s Judi Cuervo is aboard Rotterdam VII crossing the Atlantic as part of Holland America’s gala 150th Anniversary sailing.  The voyage includes many guests who have a strong connection to the cruise line, including a past crew member who is seeking two of the shipmates who shared his extraordinary experiences so many years ago.  Judi has agreed to do her part to help him locate his old friends.

HAVE YOU SEEN JAAP AND FRANS?

Harry Kloosterboer remembers 1959 well. Defying his parents who were intent on their son seeking a “real” job, Harry travelled from the northwest tip of Holland to Rotterdam seeking a position aboard a Holland America ship.  He submitted his application, passed the medical exam and soon he was working as a bellboy aboard Statendam, sailing towards Hoboken, NJ where Holland America ships docked at the time.  “It was a new world,” recalls Harry, who places Maxwell House Coffee, Hamburgers and Lucky Strike cigarettes among the magical discoveries he made upon his arrival.  “And the music!” he exclaims recalling the American jazz that dazzled the 17-year-old.  “We remained in Hoboken for days between sailings so me and the lads would travel into New York City and see Lionel Hampton, Ella Fitzgerald!  This was an unbelievable new world to a Dutch kid!  Seeing the Statue of Liberty for the first time and touring the home Frank Sinatra grew up in!  Maybe best of all, though, on nights between sailings, we’d go up on deck, lie in deck chairs and just marvel at the New York City skyline.”

To the relief of his parents, Harry only worked aboard Holland America ships for 18 months, rising from bellboy to deck steward in that short time, and returning to Holland with “so very much money, thanks to guest tips!”   Today, living in France where he and his wife run a bed and breakfast in Villeneuve, he still holds a fascination with the United States and remains a regular reader of The New York Times and The Washington Post.  And he hasn’t ventured far from the Holland America family either, currently holding four-star status as a guest with the line.  When he’s aboard ship, like during this Holland America 150th Anniversary crossing, Harry sees his younger self in the ship’s crew and understands, better than most, their dedication to the line and their excitement as they visit new lands.  And he thinks about his closest shipmates from so long ago:  Jaap Boer and Frans Verhoeven.  “I’ve searched them on the internet so many times with no success but I imagine both of them would read every word on this special sailing.   Perhaps they’ll see my name and maybe it will lead to a reunion!”

Porthole Cruise and Travel is delighted to help out….have you seen Jaap and Frans? Send an email to [email protected] or leave a comment if you think you can help!

SHIPPING CONTAINERS CONVERTED INTO UNIQUE NEW SHOPS IN PORT OF SAINT JOHN

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 24, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

6 months ago, Area 506 in the providence of Saint John, New Brunswick, was
just a parking lot but it’s been completely transformed into a booming new
shopping center with everything a port city could offer! They’ve repurposed old
shipping containers and converted them into unique retail stores, selling
everything from food & beverages to crafts and souvenirs. Most of the vendors
are local and represent the community of Saint John. There’s even a designated
area for the crew to relax and decompress. It was important to Saint John to take
care of the crews that work so tirelessly to care for everyone else.

The small shopping center is a short walk out of the terminal and an incredible
experience for first-time Saint John visitors. The spot is also great for Saint John
residents and allows for easy waterfront access for all to enjoy. Guests can enjoy
concerts, the viewing deck, and the local vendors; there’s always something to

MSC Cruises’ second World-class ship has officially begun production. Shipyard Chantiers de L’Atlantique cut the vessel’s first steel today, marking the start of construction.

The brand revealed the ship will be named MSC World America, in honor of the U.S. market. MSC World America will be the first MSC Cruises’ LNG-powered ship deployed in North America.

“MSC World America is a testament to our ambitious growth plans in the U.S. and the Caribbean and further solidifies MSC Cruises as a major player in the North American market with another of our largest, most glamorous ships coming to the region,” said Rubén A. Rodríguez, President, MSC Cruises USA.“In addition to delivering a state-of-the-art cruise experience, MSC World America exemplifies our commitment to sustainability with its advanced environmental technology. The ship will continue to elevate our guest experience in the Caribbean, and we look forward to raising the bar on what travelers can expect, whether they’re loyal cruisers or enjoying their first vacation at sea.”

MSC World America will offer a futuristic cruise experience featuring unique dining experiences and a wide variety of onboard entertainment. Setting sail in 2025, MSC World America will be the brand’s largest ship in the U.S., with more than 2,600 cabins and 420,000 square feet of public space.

  • MSC Meraviglia: Sailing for the first time during the winter season, MSC Meraviglia will travel from Brooklyn, New York, to either Bermuda or Florida and the Bahamas. Guests can choose 5 to 6-night trips or 7 to 11-night cruises.
  • MSC Seascape: Offering two different 7-night itineraries from PortMiami, traveling to the Eastern and Western Caribbean, and visiting Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

See What Others Don’t With Swan Hellenic

by Steve Leland October 24, 2022
written by Steve Leland

The launch of new ships is always cause for optimism in the world of cruising, but when a new company comes online with three brand new ships it’s cause for celebration. Swan Hellenic, a legendary pioneer in expedition style cruising is re-emerging and initiating a new phase of development as an innovator in this burgeoning sector of cruising.

Paying homage to a style of travel lost in modern times, these smaller intimate vessels offer refined classic luxury spiced with a mindset focused on intrepid destinations.  No fuss, no formality, it’s simply an experience that enhances the elements of cruising by adding enrichment into the wonders of nature visiting mesmerizing destinations while being coddled surrounded by touch points of elegance.

The understated accoutrements and furnishings embellish the welcoming warmth of tasteful Scandinavian design in public areas as well as beautiful balconied suites. Imagine the comforting vibe of a virtual reality faux fireplace at the foot of your bed with an adjacent sitting areas adding to the boutique aura of the vessel. The centerpiece Observation Lounge serves as the gathering point for presentations by expedition experts on nature and destinations as well as a convivial lounge for relaxing and mingling with other guests.

Buffet style light breakfasts and lunches are available in the Club Lounge and Pool Bar and Grill while full service meals are served in the Swan Restaurant.  The all inclusive concept is front and center with free flowing wine and beverages, excursions and complimentary prepaid gratuities.

It’s a small ship with big concepts displaying displaying every component you’d expect from a high end hotel. A beauty shop, library, gym, a spa, jacuzzi and a sauna with a view of the passing scenery plus the warmth of a heated infinity pool overlooking the aft of the ship.

In spite of the visual attractions onboard, it’s the show that goes on outside the ship that vies for undivided attention. Imagine walking amidst penguin colonies in Antarctica, stalking giant whales at sea or filling your Instagram quotas with polar bears or walruses in the Arctic. Integrate with the exotic cultures of the South Pacific, photograph the sights of Japan, hike through the jungles of Africa or gaze in awe at historical sights in Jordan.  The onboard fleet of zodiac watercraft makes excursions ashore an unforgettable adventure in exciting destinations lending credence to the Swan Hellenic mantra of See What Others Don’t.

In conjunction with the SETI Institute, guests are invited to become ambassadors of our planet by engaging in scientific research in the ship’s Expedition Lab, a state of the art venue for capturing the essence of nature’s grandeur.

Swan Hellenic has taken giant steps towards preserving the pristine waters that are home to the magnificent wildlife and habitats that we are privileged to witness. Each of the three vessels has been built in accordance with sustainable practices including the use of battery power for silent navigation when necessary while remaining emission free.

The newly launched 152 passenger SH Vega is currently navigating its way to South America where it will begin a series of Antarctica cruises throughout the winter of 2022-2023. She will be joined in a few weeks by its essentially identical sister the SH Minerva for similar explorations of the white continent followed by the arrival of the slightly larger SH Diana in 2023 for Mediterranean cruising. With the Minerva heading to the South Pacific following the Antarctic season I’m already planning for a new adventure with Swan Hellenic. Stay tuned!

Heritage Adventurer from Heritage Expeditions Embarks on Maiden Voyage

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 21, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Heritage Expedition’s brand-new flagship, Heritage Adventurer, is making cruise history on her maiden voyage as the very first expedition ship to visit the remote village of Pasir Putih on Indonesia’s Buru Island. Equipped with impeccable amenities and a touch of sophistication and comfort, Heritage Adventurer is the ideal heir to the Heritage fleet.

About 1,000 locals from 6 different villages gathered along the white sandy beach with local children and prominent dignitaries, including the respected Chief of Regency, Mrs. Safitri. Mrs. Safitri traveled 6 hours to personally take part in the event and greet Heritage Adventurer’s intrepid guests on its first voyage, Indonesian Explorer.

Aaron and Nathan Russ, owners of Heritage Expeditions, described their new partnership and friendship between the New Zealand-based company, its guests, and the locals of South Buru Island as an “incredible privilege.”

Nathan Russ said, “Being welcomed so full-heartedly by these incredibly friendly people into their way of life on this tropical island paradise, who are just as interested in us as we are in them and sharing these unforgettable moments with our guests is why we do what we do.”

Aaron agreed with Nathan, saying making connections with and supporting these typically isolated communities is super important, as well as continuing to understand and encounter new cultures and traditions. Exploring the wilderness and wildlife encounters in the island’s rarest areas was the “true essence of authentic expedition cruising,” said Aaron. “We are incredibly proud to continue the family tradition of sharing incredible adventures with our guests. Being able to offer these unforgettable moments is all part of the Heritage Experience.”

“It’s fantastic to see our guests, both existing and new, fall in love with Heritage Adventurer and rightfully restore the pride and mana in our ‘Grande Dame of Expedition Cruising’, says Aaron.

“We are incredibly proud to be the custodians of this iconic vessel and continue her history and story as a true pioneer.”

Once guests arrive on the shore of the island, they are met with a series of cultural dances and a formal greeting from Mrs. Safitri before celebrating their arrival with a feast, traditional dancing, and the opportunity to learn more about life on the island and the culture of its inhabitants. Once the festivities conclude, guests are free to enjoy the village at their leisure, including all the wildlife-gilled jungles and scenic coral reefs.

Indonesian Explorer visits remote and rare tropical islands in Indonesia and features awesome excursions like visiting Komodo National Park–home to the famed Komodo Dragon, swimming with the Whale Sharks in Kwatisore Bay, discovering Jacques Cousteau’s “underwater nirvana” in Wakatobi National Park and exploring the waters and corals of Raja Ampat. Guests can also enjoy the island’s famous white sandy beaches, jungles, and underwater worlds.

Sophia Loren Picks Her Favorite MSC Cruises Destinations

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 20, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Leading up to the naming ceremony for MSC Seascape in New York, Sophia Loren, an iconic and beloved actress, is sharing her favorite destinations to visit while aboard an MSC Cruises ship.

Sophia Loren was named the godmother of the MSC cruises fleet thanks to an almost 20-year relationship with the company. The renowned actress embodies the essence of the MSC Cruises brand with her unique European style and glamour. Loren is one of the most popular female stars of Classic Hollywood cinema, an avid traveler, and has explored some of the world’s most luxurious destinations over the years. Before the launch of MSC Seascape this December, Loren is sharing a list of her favorite spots she’s visited with MSC Cruises throughout the years.

Sophia Loren commented: “Throughout my life I have had the privilege of visiting some of the most beautiful places in the world, so it was hard to pick just a few that top the list. What makes these destinations so special are the unique experiences I have had in each one, from naming a glamorous cruise ship to creating special memories with my family. For me, traveling is all about experiencing new people and places and, in turn, discovering yourself all over again. Each of these destinations provide a chic atmosphere to unwind, relax and truly immerse yourself in a new place and its unique culture.”

MSC Cruises offers guests a global and immersive experience on all their expeditions. This winter, MSC Cruises will offer 21 contemporary ships sailing to nearly 200 of the world’s most popular destinations across 85 different countries. Some of these trips include Loren’s must-see destinations.

Here are Sophia Loren’s top destinations for an MSC Cruise:

New York City: The city that never sleeps filled with bright lights and historical landmarks; New York City is packed full of things to do for every type of traveler. On December 7, 2022, Loren will name MSC Seascape while docked in Manhattan, which marks the fleet’s first ship to be launched in New York City. The naming ceremony will showcase MSC Cruises’ commitment to the North American cruise market. In April of next year, MSC Meraviglia will even homeport in the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal.

Barcelona, Spain: In 2009, this popular destination was the setting of the naming ceremony for MSC Splendida, along with being a regularly visited vacation spot for Sophia Loren. This city has a vibrant city atmosphere, historical museums, and to-die-for cuisine. Guests can visit this hot spot on one of MSC Cruises’ popular Mediterranean expeditions.

The Caribbean: One of Loren’s favorite tropical destinations, home to white sandy beaches, and MSC Cruises’ own private island, the Caribbean is the perfect destination for anyone looking for a relaxing getaway. Loren named MSC Seashore at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, the company’s private island, and marked the official opening of the island. The unique private island spot was designed as part of MSC Cruises’ commitment to preserving the environment. Loren loves the Caribbean for its natural beauty and sandy beaches. Beginning in December of 2022, MSC Cruises will offer sailings to Ocean Cay and the Caribbean onboard their newest ship, MSC Seascape.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: Home to some of the most beautiful architecture in the world and breathtaking elaborate palaces, Dubai is a stunning destination filled with tons of immersive experiences for guests of all ages to enjoy. Dubai was the location for the naming ceremony of MSC Virtuosa, where godmother, Sophia Loren, cut the ribbon to welcome guests aboard the new ship.

The Greek Islands: The Greek islands are filled with history, cultural heritage, and breathtaking landscapes & beaches. Sophia Loren contributed to the popularity of the Greek Island, Hydra, in the 1950s when she fell in love with the island while working on a film there.

Copenhagen, Denmark: Another popular filming location for Loren, Copenhagen has both a city atmosphere along with relaxing beaches. Guests can experience the unique art and history of the city while visiting its must-see spots. Some excursions included from MSC Cruises while in Copenhagen include visiting landscaped gardens, castes, and outdoor concerts. Guests can visit Copenhagen with a variety of Northern European sailings offered by MSC Cruises.

Naples, Italy: Sophia Loren actually grew up in Naples, Italy so it’s obvious this tourist hotspot would make her list! Italian culture can be found in every corner of this city and has something for the whole family. MSC Cruises’ Mediterranean voyages even offer guests excursions to Pompeii- the site of the historic eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
