City of Seward Awarded EPA Grant for Shore Power Project at Port

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 30, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Today, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that Seward has received its full request of $45.7 million in funding through the Clean Ports Program. This public-private partnership aims to provide shore power for Seward’s new cruise port, advancing the community’s goal of achieving zero emissions.

The project brings together the City of Seward, The Seward Company, Royal Caribbean Group, and the Alaska Railroad to convert the Port of Seward into a green port. This initiative will allow cruise ships to connect to the city’s electrical grid instead of relying on diesel generators while docked.

Planned upgrades involve extending the electric transmission line to the port, installing switchgear, and integrating a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for improved energy management. This investment supports Seward’s commitment to economic growth and sustainability by reducing emissions associated with port operations. Seward Electric Services, owned by the city, currently serves 3,000 customers in the area.

“This will be the most advanced shore power system to ever be installed in Alaska,” said Jason Davis President of Turnagain Marine. “For a community this size, the system will constantly analyze and store power, saving energy and money for the City of Seward, all while making it a better place to visit and live.”

Seward, located at the head of Resurrection Bay on the Kenai Peninsula, features the only deep-water, ice-free port in Alaska, providing access to the state’s interior. The city is a central hub for fishing, shipping, and tourism, with the cruise industry being a crucial component.

“The EPA Clean Ports Grant is a game-changer for us,” said Seward City Manager Kat Sorensen. “It allows the city to implement shore power technology that will drastically reduce emissions from cruise ships in our coastal Alaska community.”

Sorensen acknowledged the partnership with The Seward Company and Royal Caribbean Group: “Their support has advanced this project, focusing on community needs as we welcome visitors to Seward.”

The Clean Ports grant will cover 90% of the total project cost of $50.8 million, which aims to install electric shore power technology and infrastructure upgrades. The remaining 10% will be funded by The Seward Company, with the Alaska Railroad aiding in land access and the grant application process. The project’s total estimated cost will exceed $56 million upon completion.

“Royal Caribbean made it easy to dream big. At today’s price tag for infrastructure projects, new ideas require long-term thinking and even more support through model public-private partnerships. Without Royal Caribbean Group’s commitment to shore power, receiving this EPA grant would not be possible,” said Mickey Richardson, CEO of the Port of Tomorrow and owner of the Seward Company who is developing the New Cruise Port of Seward.

The grant will also fund a training program at the Alaska Vocational Technical Center (AVTEC) in Seward to prepare local workers for operating and maintaining the shore power system. This includes training on ship connections, computer control systems, and battery management, creating opportunities for local students and future utility operators.

“The Port of Seward’s shore power project will place Seward among the forefront of sustainable ports in North America. By reducing reliance on diesel generators, we are not only cutting emissions but also enhancing the resilience of our local electric grid,” Seward Mayor Sue McClure said.

This project is part of Seward’s broader strategy to promote sustainable development alongside economic growth, with expected positive impacts on both the environment and the community.

All design and construction requirements for the shore power system have been planned by The Seward Company and Turnagain Marine. The new cruise port is set to open in May 2026, with the shore power system expected to follow shortly after.

“The new Seward Passenger dock represents a generational investment in Alaska’s marine infrastructure – an investment that would not be possible without strong partners in Royal Caribbean, the Seward Company, and the support of the City of Seward,” said Bill O’Leary, President and CEO of the Alaska Railroad Corporation. “We are delighted that this grant has accelerated a greener future, as the new dock will serve Alaska for decades to come.”

The EPA has selected 55 applicants in 27 states and territories to receive nearly $3 billion through its Clean Ports Program. These grants will support the deployment of zero-emission equipment and various climate and air quality projects at ports across the nation.

Should CDC Inspection Results influence your cruise-ship selection?

by Judi Cuervo October 30, 2024
written by Judi Cuervo

You’ve read the reviews, scanned the brochures, and devoured every social media post related to the ship you expect to sail on. But have you looked under the bed, peeked into the medicine cabinet, and checked the milk’s expiration date in the ship’s fridge?

Fortunately, there’s no need to do those things because CDC (Center for Disease Control) inspections,  also known as VSP (Vessel Sanitation Program) or USPH (United States Port Health) inspections, perform these checks and report the findings online at Advanced Cruise Ship Inspection Search.

CDC inspections of cruise ships are unannounced semi-annual evaluations for vessels carrying 13 or more guests. These inspections assess the ship’s operations and compliance with public health standards to prevent the spread of gastrointestinal diseases. Each inspection examines the medical center, potable water systems, galleys and dining areas, swimming pools, housekeeping practices, pest management, child activity centers, and HVAC systems. Inspections typically last 6 to 8 hours, depending on the ship’s size and the number of inspectors. A perfect score is 100, while scores below 86 are deemed unsatisfactory.

Don’t see your ship listed? If it doesn’t operate in U.S. waters, there won’t be a report available. However, be assured that an inspection will be conducted as soon as the ship arrives at an American port.

While researching your ship’s CDC inspection report, be sure to carefully review both the “violation” and “recommendation” sections of each item. You may find that serious violations, such as inadequate refrigeration, sanitation, and food storage, were corrected immediately or that an action plan was promptly implemented. Additionally, consider the date of the ship’s inspection — if it occurred two weeks ago, chances are that issues are being addressed or have already been resolved; however, these updates will not appear until the ship’s next inspection, which is likely months away.

Along with significant violations, you’ll likely find some nonsensical notes in your ship’s report — not surprising, given that the VSP manual that guides inspectors is nearly 300 pages long. Points may be deducted for failing to provide serving dishes with the exact dimensions recommended by the CDC, using a nearly illegible typeface on a menu warning against ordering undercooked beef, a bartender wearing a watch while working (no jewelry is permitted while on duty, apparently), and, my personal favorite, “two flies were on the worker side of the bar.” An outdoor bar. In port.

Should a ship’s low score be a major deterrent in your decision to sail it?  No!  An analysis by Maritime Health Services has determined that a ship’s CDC inspection score reflects only the situation that existed on the particular day of the unannounced inspection and may not represent a ship’s ongoing commitment to public health standards.  For the most accurate picture, review your ship’s inspection history — not just its most recent result.  In April 2003, for example, a major cruise ship scored a dismal 67 points at its inspection and, three months later, scored in the 90s.

At the same time, a 100-point score is no guarantee against gastrointestinal outbreak. In 2023, 14 such outbreaks occurred on ships sailing U.S. waters, with half of them taking place aboard ships that had scored 97 points or higher in their CDC inspection and two of them scoring a perfect 100.

Gastrointestinal illness is caused by viruses, bacteria, or parasites and may strike anywhere crowds gather.  According to CLIA, the risk of contracting norovirus in the U.S. is about 1 in 15, but a cruise passenger has an estimated 1 in 5,500 chance of contracting it aboard the ship!

While CDC inspections certainly contribute to those low odds, personal hygiene and completing that pre-boarding health questionnaire honestly are equally important.

When it comes to gastrointestinal disease, cruise passengers are far more protected than those ashore.  And that’s the dirty little secret that all those recent alarmist news stories don’t reveal.

written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Main dining on cruises offers a convenient and enjoyable dining experience, making it a popular choice for many travelers. Here’s a straightforward look at why main dining is a great option and its key advantages.

What is Main Dining on Cruises?

Main dining refers to the designated dining room on a cruise ship where passengers gather for meals at set times. Typically, cruise lines offer early and late dining options, with menus that change daily, providing a mix of traditional and modern cuisine.

Key Advantages of Main Dining

Structured Meal Times

Main dining provides set meal times, making it easy for families and groups to coordinate their schedules. This structure ensures everyone can enjoy a meal together after a day of activities.

No Reservations Needed

Unlike specialty restaurants, main dining usually doesn’t require reservations. Passengers can show up at their assigned time, reducing the stress of meal planning.

Variety of Menu Options

Main dining offers a rotating menu with a variety of choices, ensuring that guests can enjoy both familiar favorites and new dishes throughout their cruise. This variety accommodates different tastes and dietary needs.

Social Atmosphere

Dining in a main dining room allows for social interaction with fellow passengers. Sharing a table can lead to new friendships and enjoyable conversations, enriching the cruising experience.

Quality Food and Service

Main dining rooms maintain high standards for food and service. Experienced staff members are dedicated to attentive service, and skilled chefs often prepare meals using fresh ingredients.

Accommodating Dietary Needs

Main dining typically accommodates various dietary restrictions, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. Guests can communicate their needs to ensure a satisfying dining experience.

Elegant Atmosphere

Main dining rooms often feature a more elegant setting with dress codes that enhance the dining experience. Passengers can enjoy a refined environment that makes meals feel special.

With no reservations needed, an array of menu choices, and the opportunity for social interaction, it provides a memorable part of the cruise journey. If you’re setting sail soon, consider the benefits of main dining as a key element of your trip.

The August 2-11 sailing will feature a Cabaret Cultivated Journey with artist Travis Moser. Known for his captivating solo performances, Moser will present the inaugural Sea Cloud Cruises Cabaret Cultivated Journey, drawing inspiration from travel and sailing, accompanied by the grand piano aboard Sea Cloud Spirit.

“So much of the musical experience is connected to the venue,” Moser shared about his 2025 performance. “I cannot be more excited to perform in such an intimate space on the beautiful Sea Cloud Spirit, sailing the Adriatic Sea from Venice. I look forward to sharing this travel and musical experience with guests and can’t wait for my accompanist and me to come on board.”

More About the Itinerary

The voyage will feature stops in Venice, a day of sailing, and visits to Šibenik, Dubrovnik, Korčula, Vis, and Hvar in Croatia, culminating with an overnight stay in Venice. Excursion highlights include the Krka waterfalls, late-night access to Dubrovnik until 11 p.m., the harbor of Komiža, and a walk along the historic Rialto Bridge.

“Sailing was a passion of Marjorie Merriweather Post, the creator of the original Sea Cloud. These specially designed Venice roundtrip sailings pay homage to her love for this region,” said Mirell Reyes, president of Sea Cloud Cruises North America. “Post was also a music enthusiast, and we are thrilled to have Travis Moser with us for this inaugural Cabaret Cultivated Journey, performing in the enchanting setting of our Steinway & Sons grand piano.”

Moser’s latest show, “Someday Soon: The Songs of Judy Collins,” recently completed a national tour. His previous show, “Just One Look: The Songs of Linda Ronstadt,” debuted at The Green Room 42 in New York. This will also be Moser’s debut aboard Sea Cloud Spirit.

Upcoming voyages include amenities such as an open bar, all meals with select wines and beers, water sports, port charges, gratuities, and a welcome bottle of champagne. Fall Sale Fares start at $8,545 per person, with a $2,500 credit for staterooms and a $3,500 credit for suites when booked by December 20, 2024. Head to the Sea Cloud website for more information.

Safaris Restore Wilderness

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine October 24, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Experts once declared Tanzania’s Kwakuchinja wildlife migration route “abandoned.” Due to illegal logging, poaching and over-grazing the once-thriving area between the Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks had become nearly devoid of fauna and flora.

That changed in 2008, when visionary conservationists Fabia Bausch and Nicolas Negre, founders of Chem Chem Safaris, set about restoring the area.

Working with Tanzanian government officials and local communities, they’ve made the region a “model” wildlife corridor.

Now Chem Chem owns three safari camps where guests can enjoy lush vegetation, elephant encounters, wellness walks, and even side-by-side runs with Maasai warriors.

Grand Seine & Rhône
This cruise navigates the Seine and Rhône rivers, merging the Paris & Normandy and Essence of Burgundy & Provence itineraries. Travelers will visit monasteries, Normandy’s coastline, and châteaux while enjoying French history and cuisine. Train connections facilitate transfers from Paris to Dijon. Pre-cruise options include two nights in Paris and three nights on the French Riviera.

Grand Rhine & Dutch Canals
Sailing from Amsterdam to Basel aboard AmaStella, this cruise combines the Best of Holland & Belgium, Enchanting Rhine, and Captivating Rhine itineraries. It features castles and villages along the Rhine, as well as highlights in Holland and Belgium. A land extension includes two pre-cruise nights in Amsterdam and two nights each in Lake Lucerne and Zurich after the cruise.

Magnificent Europe
This itinerary from Amsterdam to Budapest follows the Danube, Main, and Rhine rivers, showcasing multiple UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Guests can visit Cologne’s Cathedral, Bamberg’s Old Town, and Nuremberg’s castle and enjoy outdoor activities in Passau and Vienna. Two pre-cruise nights in Amsterdam are available.

Grand Danube
This journey, which travels between Vilshofen, Germany, and Giurgiu, Romania, includes eight countries along the Danube River. Guests can explore ancient sites, enjoy local food and wine, or participate in outdoor activities. An optional land package offers three pre-cruise nights in Prague and two nights in both Brașov and Bucharest or three nights in Istanbul after the cruise.

Just the Walking

by Kevin Revolinski October 22, 2024
written by Kevin Revolinski

I first saw the finish line of the Camino while on a road trip in Spain that took me through Santiago de Compostela. In the morning, the first pilgrim arrived, shuffling into the plaza of St. James’ Cathedral, dropping his backpack, sinking to his knees on the cobblestones, shaking with something between tears and joyous laughter. I’ll have what he’s having, I thought.

Four years later, I stood at the top of Spain’s Alto del Perdón — the rather unforgiving Hill of Forgiveness — with steady winds whirling turbines behind me and in front of me, sweeping scenes of azure skies and verdant fields that almost looked computer-generated in their perfection. After a rest and some water, I continued, zigzagging down the other side over cobble and packed dirt. At the bottom in the next town was a café for a snack, a beer, and a ride — my guide stood smiling next to the van like family cheering me on at the end of a marathon. My hotel? All taken care of. Dinner? Reservations made for me. My backpack? Already waiting in my room. Not a bad way to take on the Camino.

A Traditional Pilgrimage

Since the 9th century, the Camino of Santiago (“The Way of St. James”) has drawn pilgrims from all directions — originally to visit the remains of St. James the Apostle, which now rest in his namesake 13th-century cathedral in the city of Santiago de Compostela. Nowadays, travelers come for an assortment of reasons, spiritual and otherwise. Some walk 500 miles or more, a journey that can take weeks or even months depending on the route and starting point. Setting up day-to-day accommodations or even winging it can be overwhelming. Humping everything on your back all day is also not fun. What if you just had to show up with walking shoes? You’re in luck.

In the late 90s, Arizona-born Alex Chang had just quit a job in Spain when he decided to walk the Camino as a departing gift to himself. But the Camino got its hooks in him and he never left. He became a guide, and figuring that most travelers don’t have a couple free months for a through-hike, he founded Fresco Tours, offering a service of supported hiking.

Multiple caminos come to Santiago from all directions, but I came for the Camino Frances, the French Way, as roughly 60 percent of all pilgrims do. “This one has got the most history,” Chang says of this UNESCO World Heritage-listed path. “Unlike the Appalachian Trail, it is not remote. There’s more infrastructure, coffee shops, bars where you stop and get a [Camino passport] stamp.” Fresco also offers itineraries across northern Spain, Portugal, and even the Canary Islands, as well as just the 70-mile home stretch into Santiago, breaking the longer Camino routes into “chapters.” The Spanish Horizons highlights tour puts you in a private bus from the Pyrenees all the way to .…

The Benefits of Laundry Services on Cruises

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 21, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Cruising allows you to visit multiple destinations without the hassle of unpacking and repacking at each stop. One important service that can significantly enhance your experience on board is laundry. While it often goes unnoticed, taking advantage of laundry services during your trip can make a big difference. Here’s how:

Pack Light

Laundry services let you travel with fewer clothes. Instead of packing outfits for every possible occasion, you can bring a few versatile items and wash them as needed.

Save on Baggage Fees

Traveling light helps you avoid checked baggage fees. Washing clothes on board means you won’t need to bring extra luggage, saving you money.

Stay Fresh

With easy access to laundry, you’ll always have fresh clothes. After a day of exploration, you can quickly wash your outfit to look your best for dinner or events.

Convenience

Cruise lines typically offer laundry services, making it easy to clean your clothes without interrupting your itinerary. Drop off your laundry and focus on enjoying your trip.

Cost-Effective Packages

Many cruise lines offer laundry packages that can save you money if you plan to wash multiple items. These packages often include unlimited washes at a flat rate.

Family Friendly

For families, laundry services make traveling easier. You can quickly handle spills and messes without overpacking, ensuring everyone stays comfortable.

More Relaxation Time

With laundry taken care of, you can enjoy the cruise’s amenities, dining, and entertainment instead of worrying about laundry chores.

Utilizing laundry services on cruises allows you to pack lighter, save money, and enjoy your vacation stress-free. Consider these services when planning your next cruise to enhance your travel experience.
