Celebrity Xcel’s Keel Laying Ceremony

by Julie Bouchner June 13, 2024
written by Julie Bouchner

Celebrity Cruises’ new ship, Celebrity Xcel, broke ground today at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France.

She will launch in the fall of 2025 and offer an unparalleled premium cruise experience with new amenities and features to be announced.

“Today, we not only mark the start of construction, but we are laying the foundation on which countless memories will be created,” said Jason Liberty, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean Group. “Each new ship also represents an opportunity to advance our journey to net zero, and with Xcel, we are building our first methanol capable ship, which helps advance our transition to the energy platform of the future.”

MORE ABOUT THE CEREMONY

Executives from Royal Caribbean Group, Celebrity Cruises, and the shipyard gathered to mark the start of Celebrity Xcel‘s construction, a time-honored tradition that involves placing coins on the first steel block to ensure good luck throughout the building process and beyond. The commemorative coins feature a design inspired by the Edge Series’ pursuit of excellence and innovation.

“We can’t wait to debut Celebrity Xcel and her unrivaled guest experiences, living up to her name in every way with surprises that confirm ‘Nothing Comes Close’ to a Celebrity vacation,” said Laura Hodges Bethge, president of Celebrity Cruises. “We are grateful for the continued partnership of the Chantiers de l’Atlantique team for lending their craftsmanship to further elevate the innovative design and world-class features of our beloved Edge Series ships.”

“The Edge Series is the result of close collaboration between the Celebrity Cruises and Chantiers de l’Atlantique teams,” continued Laurent Castaing, General Manager of Chantiers de l’Atlantique. “We know and trust one another, and work in harmony to offer a unique and sustainable experience for passengers.”

Tarragona Celebrates the Launch of its New Cruise Terminal

by Julie Bouchner June 13, 2024
written by Julie Bouchner

Tarragona Port recently celebrated the opening of its new sustainable cruise terminal, designed to reduce environmental impact. The state-of-the-art facility features renewable energy and eco-friendly practices, including a cafeteria, information center, shop, and bus parking area for up to 50 buses.

To kick off the 64th MedCruise General Assembly, which took place at the H10 Imperial Tarraco Hotel, MedCruise President Figen Ayan, Tarragona Port Authority President Saul Garrets, and Mayor Rubén Viñuales emphasized the importance of a holistic approach to sustainability, efficient resource management, and cultural heritage preservation at a press conference.

“We have decided to prepare this whole programme with events and sessions echoing one mainstream philosophy: inclusiveness,” said Ayan. “Like the human tower (castell) that is a symbol of the region, ‘we all carry universal values such as teamwork, solidarity, self improvement, the feeling of belonging and the integration of people of all ages, races and social backgrounds.”

Ayan also commented on Tarragona’s growth as a cruise destination, saying, “Tarragona is emerging as a promising cruise destination due to its proximity to an international airport, hotels, and UNESCO World Heritage sites. The port has seen a significant increase in cruise ship visits and passengers in recent years. From just 13 cruises in 2013, the port closed the 2023 season with an impressive 57 calls and hosted 110,000 cruise passengers.”

Specialty Dining: Is It Worth It?

by Porthole Cruise and Travel June 13, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

One of the most exciting aspects of a cruise is the opportunity to indulge in various culinary delights. While the main dining room on your cruise ship may offer a range of options, many cruisers opt for specialty dining experiences to elevate their dining experience. But is specialty dining on a cruise worth it? In this blog post, we’ll explore the pros and cons of specialty dining and help you decide whether it’s worth splurging.

Pros of Specialty Dining:

1. Unique Experiences: Specialty dining experiences often offer a unique and memorable experience. From fine dining restaurants with Michelin-starred chefs to themed restaurants, these experiences can be truly one-of-a-kind.
2. High-Quality Cuisine: Many specialty dining experiences offer exceptional cuisine prepared by world-class chefs and presented in elegant settings. This can be an excellent opportunity to indulge in fine dining without breaking the bank.

3. Variety: Specialty dining options often offer a range of cuisines and styles, from Asian fusion to Italian and steakhouse. This allows you to try something new and exciting without committing to a full meal.

4. Romance: Specialty dining experiences can be a great way to add romance to your cruise. Imagine a sunset dinner on the deck or a romantic evening at a fine dining restaurant.

5. Convenience: Specialty dining experiences are often convenient and hassle-free, as they are typically included in your cruise fare or can be booked through the cruise line’s app.

Cons of Specialty Dining

1. Cost: Specialty dining experiences often have a price tag. While some may be included in your cruise fare, many require an additional fee or have limited availability.
2. Time Constraints: Specialty dining experiences often have limited seating times or require reservations well in advance. This can be frustrating if you’re looking to dine at your leisure.
3. Limited Options: While specialty dining options offer variety, there may be limited choices for those with dietary restrictions or preferences.
4. Crowds: Popular specialty dining experiences can be crowded, which may detract from the overall experience.

Making the Most of Your Specialty Dining Experience

1. Research: Research the specialty dining options on your cruise ship and read reviews from other passengers.
2. Book Early: Book your specialty dining experience early to ensure availability and avoid disappointment.
3. Be Flexible: Be flexible with your dining schedule and consider booking a lunch or brunch experience if dinner times are limited.
4. Check Your Cruise Fare: Check your cruise fare to see if specialty dining is included or if there are any additional fees.
5. Enjoy Yourself: Remember to relax and enjoy yourself! Specialty dining is about treating yourself and creating memories.

Ultimately, it depends on your personal preferences and priorities. Specialty dining may be worth the splurge if you seek a unique experience and exceptional cuisine. However, if you’re on a budget or have limited time constraints, you may want to stick with the main dining room or explore alternative options.

By researching, planning, and being flexible, you can maximize your specialty dining experience and create lasting memories on your cruise.

5 Tips For Shore Exploration

by Porthole Cruise and Travel June 12, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Everyone looks forward to an unparalleled experience when visiting any cruise port around the world! As exciting as that might be, travelers should be fully aware of things they should avoid while on shore. It is crucial to be aware of the potential dangers and stay vigilant. Taking all safety precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip is essential. Keep reading to find out the top five things cruise-goers should avoid while exploring and enjoying the natural beauty of ports!

Departure time

It’s common to lose track of time while on vacation. To avoid feeling rushed or stressed about returning to the ship on time, it’s best to allocate adequate time for planned activities on shore. Booking extra time for unforeseen delays during excursions or while en route is a smart move, regardless of the activity you have scheduled. With adequate time set aside, you can guarantee that you’ll arrive before the ship departs!

Be aware of local laws

Learning about the ports where your cruise ship stops is always recommended. Respecting local laws shows cultural sensitivity and helps maintain a positive image of travelers who arrive at ports daily. Ignoring local laws can lead to legal consequences such as fines and even imprisonment. By obeying local laws, travelers contribute to sustainable tourism and promote safety for one another. Familiarizing yourself with cultural norms or regulations can help avoid uncomfortable situations.

Never wander off alone

It’s not uncommon for tourists to desire to delve deeper into ports; however, doing so alone can be quite perilous. For this reason, exploring areas in groups or with a guide is recommended. Passengers should avoid venturing into unknown or remote areas independently as it can jeopardize their safety. Traveling to isolated destinations and not classified as tourist areas increases the likelihood of losing sight of one’s surroundings or encountering a potentially hazardous situation.

Be careful with valuables

When taking part in shore excursions, bringing cash for emergencies, tipping, and shopping is wise and recommended to bring only enough money to fulfill these basic requirements. Carrying a credit card or debit card can prevent any potential misunderstandings or unwanted situations. Tourists who become vulnerable to theft might incur substantial financial losses that can utterly spoil their trip.

Be careful of pickpockets

Pickpockets are skilled thieves who discreetly take travelers’ valuables such as wallets, phones, and jewelry. It is important to be aware of your surroundings and always to keep a close eye on your belongings. Pickpockets tend to lurk in the center of busy hubs where they can hide in plain sight and blend in undetected. They employ diversion tactics and occasionally collaborate as a team to exchange information and techniques.

By adhering to these safety procedures, you can ensure a secure and pleasant vacation experience. Cruise terminals implement various safety protocols, such as security screenings and law enforcement, to safeguard all travelers. Ensure your safety by staying alert, complying with instructions, and making it a priority at all times while at the cruise ports.

Let us know in the comments if you plan to use any of these tips on your next trip!

How To Cruise Through Embarkation Day Like A Pro

by Porthole Cruise and Travel June 11, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

When it is time to board your cruise for your vacation at sea, you can expect a mix of chaos and excitement as passengers begin to get their vacation started. If you prepare correctly, embarkation will be a breeze! Here are three expert tips for a successful embarkation day for your cruise.

    1. Validate your passport

Right after planning your cruise vacation, please make sure your passport is not expired. If it is, you’ll have to undergo an extensive process, including a massive amount of anxiety, to ensure your new passport arrives on time. If you can catch it early, the odds may be more in your favor.

    2. Check-in Early

Head online to your cruise-specific website and check in before your cruise to ensure everything runs smoothly on the day of your trip. The check-in process is usually very short, and you can easily check you and your party in minutes and download all of your travel documents. Some cruise lines even have apps you can download from your mobile app store, which allows quicker processing. If you’re not tech-savvy, ask someone else in your family to do you a favor before sailing. These tasks aren’t fun or motivating, but they’ll get you closer to getting your favorite cocktail on the early end.

    3. Pack smarter, not harder

Did you pack yet? Us cruisers always put packing on the back burner, yet we always forget to pack something essential. I won’t tell you to pack early or pack the day of because I’ve done both. What I will tell you is to pack a bathing suit and a change of clothes in your carry-on so you can head straight to the pool after your smooth embarkation process. Getting a lounge chair is almost as hard as getting on the ship, so it’s important to be prepared for any situation.

If you choose to use at least one of the tools mentioned above, it’ll make your embarkation day easier!

Let us know your embarkation tips below!

Here Is What’s Really Included On Your Cruise

by Porthole Cruise and Travel June 10, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

When booking a cruise, it’s essential to understand what’s included in your package and what additional expenses you may incur. This guide will provide a detailed breakdown of a cruise’s typical inclusions and extras, helping you make informed decisions and plan your trip accordingly.

The Basics: What’s Included in Your Cruise

Most cruise lines offer a standard package that includes:

Accommodations: Enjoy comfortable accommodations in your chosen cabin category, complete with amenities like flat-screen TVs, mini-bars, and plush bedding.

Meals and Snacks: Savor many delicious dining options, from fine dining restaurants to casual buffets and snack bars. Many cruise lines also offer unique dietary options and room service.

Onboard Facilities and Activities: Relax by the pool, get pampered at the spa, or try your luck at the casino. Participate in trivia games, wine tastings, and live entertainment shows.

Access to Amenities: Enjoy access to onboard amenities like fitness centers, libraries, and shops, where you can find everything from souvenirs to sunscreen.

What’s Not Included (Or May Cost Extra)

While your cruise package includes many perks, there are some additional expenses to consider:

Shore Excursions: Explore exotic destinations with guided tours and activities, such as snorkeling trips, city tours, and cultural experiences. Prices vary depending on the cruise line and activity.

Drinks and Specialty Dining: Indulge in premium spirits, fine wines, and specialty dining options like sushi or steakhouse restaurants. These can add up quickly, especially if you love coffee or wine!

Wi-Fi and Internet Access: Stay connected with family and friends while at sea with internet access. Prices vary depending on the cruise line and your data usage.

Gratuities: Show your appreciation for exceptional service by tipping your cabin steward, waitstaff, and other crew members. Some cruise lines include gratuities in the cost of your package.

Onboard Charges: Monitor your onboard expenses, as you may be charged for laundry services, phone calls, or even a lost item.

Tips for Saving Money on Your Cruise

Don’t let the extras break the bank! Here are some tips to help you save:

Book a Drink Package: Many cruise lines offer unlimited drinks for a fixed price. This can be a cost-effective way to enjoy your favorite beverages.

Research Shore Excursions: Look for affordable options or consider exploring independently. You might find that independent excursions are more cost-effective or offer a more personalized experience.

Consider a Budget-Friendly Cruise Line: Some cruise lines offer more affordable options without sacrificing amenities. Look for deals on older ships or consider off-season travel for better prices.

Your cruise vacation is designed to be a relaxing and enjoyable getaway. You can make the most of your time at sea by understanding what’s included in your package and what costs extra. Remember to budget accordingly, research your options carefully, and prepare to have a lifetime vacation!

5 Lesser-Known Amenities Offered On Cruise Ships

by Porthole Cruise and Travel June 7, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

We all know that going on a cruise means lounging by the pool, ordering tropical drinks, and eating plenty of food. For many travelers, this is more than enough, but what if you want more? Cruise lines have come prepared to meet the needs of every guest. In addition to the well-known amenities and experiences on cruises, there are also some lesser-known things that cruises provide guests. Here are five of my favorite options:

    1. Educational Workshops and Classes

Photo by wes lewis on Unsplash

Don’t worry- this isn’t like going back to school. Many cruise ships offer educational workshops and classes on a wide range of topics. Courses can include photography lessons, cooking demonstrations, wine tastings, language classes, art workshops, and dance lessons. The activities provided can allow guests to learn something new and enhance their skills while enjoying their cruise vacation.

    2. Spas/Wellness Facilities

Photo by Katherine Hanlon on Unsplash

Most cruise ships have onboard spas and wellness facilities offering various treatments and services. Beyond the usual massages and facials, you might find unique and holistic offerings such as acupuncture, meditation classes, and special fitness programs. If you want to know what services are offered explicitly on your cruise, call your ship’s spa or visit the cruise line’s website before you embark.

    3. Cultural Experiences

Photo by Elizeu Dias on Unsplash

Cruises often incorporate cultural experiences into their itineraries. Depending on the destination, you may have the opportunity to skip the typical excursion fare and participate in local cultural activities such as traditional dance performances, language lessons, craft workshops, or cultural immersion tours. These experiences can allow you to engage with the local culture and better understand the places you’ll visit on your trip.

    4. Culinary Delights

We all love a good buffet, but sometimes it can get too routine. Cruise ships are known for their excellent dining options, but there are often lesser-known culinary experiences in addition to the typical dining fare. Some ships offer exclusive chef’s table experiences where you can enjoy a multi-course meal prepared by the ship’s executive chef. Additionally, some cruise lines organize culinary tours or cooking demonstrations that allow you to explore local cuisine and learn new recipes to take home with you.

    5. Enrichment Lectures

Do you want to leave your cruise with more knowledge? Look no further! Many cruises feature enrichment programs where guest lecturers or experts in various fields give talks or presentations on topics such as history, science, nature, or art. These lectures provide guests with educational and intellectually stimulating experiences, allowing them to learn and engage with exciting subjects during their cruise.

It’s easy to have fun on a cruise ship, but sometimes the typical activities are just that- too typical. Hopefully, this guide will get you thinking about what else ships can offer you while on vacation!

How Expensive Is It To Live On A Cruise Ship Year-Round?

by Porthole Cruise and Travel June 6, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

As remote work has become a reality for more and more people, a new trend has taken the travel industry by storm: alternative living. With the newfound flexibility offered by working remotely, many people are curating a full-time travel lifestyle, hopping from timezone to timezone while working their full-time jobs online. And the cruise industry is no exception.

As more and more people are able to work remotely, the desire to live on a cruise has become increasingly popular. And with this desire comes the inevitable question of affordability. Just how expensive is it to live on a cruise ship full-time, year-round? In this blog, we’re going to break down an approximate budget for this enviable new lifestyle.

    Cruise Accommodations

By far the most expensive aspect of living on a cruise ship year-round is the accommodations. However, the good news is that aspiring full-time cruisers have a variety of options to choose from, all suitable for different types of travelers with diverse budgets.

Some travelers opt to lease apartments on residential cruises such as Residence At Sea’s The World and Villa Vie Residences. This is by far the most expensive option, as many of these residential cruise apartments have six-figure price tags. However, for those willing and able to rent long-term accommodations, this option comes with a host of luxurious benefits, all the while taking you to hundreds of ports around the globe.

A more affordable option is what’s referred to as a World Cruise. Much like the residential cruise lines mentioned above, these cruises sail all around the world, with voyages such as the World Cruise from Life At Sea guaranteeing a visit to all seven continents. These itineraries typically span three to six months, and many full-time travelers choose to book these longer voyages back to back.

Life At Sea’s world cruise, however, was specifically designed with full-time cruisers in mind, offering a three-year cruising option. Benefits of this three-year itinerary include all-inclusive dining, laundry service, and diverse entertainment options. The price? For their November 2024 itinerary, prices start at around $80,000 per year, per person, though in previous years prices have been several thousand dollars cheaper.

For those with a tighter budget hoping to live on a cruise ship, there are still plenty of great alternatives. Some travelers prefer to book traditional, short-term cruises back-to-back, giving them greater control of the itinerary. Prices for these vary from itinerary to itinerary, but an average cabin price of $100/night for an entire year comes out to over $36,000. Talk about a discount. The catch here is that you will be in a near-constant state of booking short cruises, injecting a level of uncertainty into your living situation.

One last thing to note is that many of these long-term cruise options charge passenger fees on top of accommodation fees. If you choose to lease an apartment on a residential cruise, for example, in addition to the price of rent, you will also be expected to pay an annual cruise fare. The prices for these fares vary significantly from cruise line to cruise line, so be sure to do thorough research before deciding which option is the most economical for you.

    Food on a Cruise

Another financial factor to consider when deciding to live on a cruise year-round is food. While many cruise lines offer all-inclusive options to their guests, this isn’t always the case. Furthermore, living full-time on a cruise gives you the opportunity to try local foods from around the world. So ask yourself: how much money are you willing (or able) to spend on food while traveling the world?

This is not the easiest question to answer, particularly as every person has different priorities, preferences, and restrictions when it comes to food. If you follow a strict diet at home, it will likely be harder and more expensive to stick to it abroad. Furthermore, while prices in the restaurants, buffets, and grocery stores on your ship will remain stable throughout your journey, food prices in ports can vary tremendously from country to country, from continent to continent.

Another factor to consider is tipping. Tipping culture varies from region to region, so if you plan on visiting restaurants or bars in port, be sure to research how much money (if any) you’ll have to spend on gratuities.

Creating a food budget while living on a cruise full-time can be a challenge. But rest assured that this is one of the aspects of year-round cruise living over which you have a lot of control. By sticking to all-inclusive dining options aboard your ship, you can save a substantial amount of money.

The Unexpected Expenses (Taxes, Insurance, Healthcare)

While living on a cruise guarantees an exciting and adventurous lifestyle, it also comes with certain logistical complications that you may not have considered. For example, in addition to the accommodation fees and cruise fares, you should also expect to pay a considerable amount of taxes while living aboard, with one notable example being the port fee. All passengers must pay this tax when they choose to disembark at any given port, and while living on a cruise full-time, these fees can quickly add up.

Secondly, you will likely have to purchase new insurance policies that cover your medical expenses abroad. Relying on your typical travel insurance plans will not be suitable as these policies are meant for shorter-term trips. Thus, it’s worth contacting your current insurance provider and discussing your options for year-round coverage.

In a similar vein, it’s important to think ahead about health care. While there is a doctor on board open to passengers, their time and resources are limited. If you have any preexisting conditions that require frequent visits to a health care provider, living on a cruise full-time can prove to be a challenge. Thus, it’s best to have a few plans in place as to how you would handle any medical emergencies abroad.

Lastly, you will likely have to purchase a new phone plan to ensure that you don’t lose access to your data while traveling the world. For more information on using your phone and other devices on a cruise ship, be sure to read this article in which we break down everything you need to know. When in doubt, however, contact your at-home provider and research whether they have any international phone plans that will meet your needs.

Living on a Cruise Full-Time Is Possible

As you can see, there are a nearly endless number of factors that contribute to the affordability of full-time cruise ship living. Doing your research and making the most informed decisions for yourself will ensure that this lifestyle is financially feasible for you. In the end, you can expect to pay anywhere from $50,000 to $150,000 to live on a cruise ship full-time, though added amenities can quickly drive this price up.

It’s important to note that this number is approximate, and the actual cost of living on a cruise ship full-time will vary from person to person. But at the end of the day, this alternative lifestyle of travel can be feasible for people with diverse budgets. Armed with the right tools and information, you can curate the year-round cruise experience that is perfect for you and your needs. That feeling of flexibility is just a taste of the freedom you can expect from cruise living.

The Secret to Avoiding Crowds on a Cruise

by Porthole Cruise and Travel June 5, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Are you tired of feeling like you’re just another face in the crowd on your cruise ship? Do you wish you could have a more relaxed and peaceful experience at sea? You’re not alone! Many cruise enthusiasts struggle with the crowds and chaos of sharing a ship with thousands of other passengers.

We’ve got the inside scoop on avoiding the crowds and making the most of your time on board. From cabin selection to peak hour strategies, we’ll share our top insider tips and tricks to help you enjoy a more serene and enjoyable cruise experience.

    Choose the Right Cabin

An Inside Room With a View | Royal Caribbean Blog

When it comes to avoiding crowds, cabin selection is crucial. Look for cabins that are located in quieter areas of the ship, such as:

    •  Mid-ship cabins: These tend to be less noisy and less crowded than cabins near the front or back of the ship.
    • Lower decks: Cabins on lower decks are often less crowded than those on higher decks, which can be more prone to noise and activity.
    • Corner cabins: These cabins often have more space and are less likely to be disturbed by noise from adjacent cabins.

    Peak Hour Strategies

Even with the right cabin, you’ll still need to navigate peak hours on the ship. Here are some strategies to help you avoid the crowds:

    • Dine off-peak: Instead of eating at the main dining room during peak hours (usually between 6-8pm), try one alternative dining option or have a snack at 8 pm in your cabin.
    • Use the gangway: If you’re heading up to the pool deck or another popular area, try using the gangway instead of the elevator. This can help you avoid crowds and long lines.
    • Take a break: If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the crowds, take a break and retreat to your cabin for a bit. You can always re-emerge when things have died down a bit.

While avoiding crowds is essential, making the most of your time on board is also important. Here are some tips to help you do just that:

    • Plan: Check out the ship’s daily schedule and plan accordingly. This can help you avoid crowds and make sure you don’t miss out on any activities you want to do.
    • Take advantage of quiet areas: Many cruise ships have quiet areas perfect for relaxation. Look for libraries, spas, or adults-only solariums to unwind and escape the crowds.
    • Try new things: Don’t be afraid to try new things on board! From cooking classes to wine tastings, there are plenty of unique experiences. And if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the crowds, try doing something new instead of sticking to your usual routine.

    Bonus Tips

Here are a few extra tips to help you avoid crowds on your cruise:

If you want a truly peaceful experience, consider booking an inside cabin. These cabins tend to be less crowded than those with ocean views and can be just as comfortable and relaxing.

Many cruise lines offer apps that allow you to book reservations, check out activities, and even track down your fellow passengers. This can help you avoid crowds and make your life easier on board.

By following these insider tips and tricks, you can avoid crowds and enjoy a more relaxed and peaceful cruise experience. Happy sailing!
