Budget-Friendly Travel Secrets: How to Explore Europe for Less

by Porthole Cruise and Travel May 8, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Exploring the beauty and charm of Europe doesn’t have to break the bank. With insider tips and savvy planning, you can enjoy all this continent offers without draining your wallet. From historic landmarks to picturesque villages, here are some budget-friendly travel secrets on how to explore Europe for less:

Travel off-peak:

One of the easiest ways to save money on your European adventure is to travel during the off-peak season. Not only will you avoid the crowds, but you’ll also find cheaper accommodation and transportation options. Plus, you’ll have a more authentic experience, as you’ll get to interact with locals in a more relaxed setting.

Opt for budget airlines:

Europe is known for its budget airlines that offer affordable fares to various destinations. By booking your flights in advance and being flexible with your travel dates, you can score great deals on airfare. Just be sure to pack light to avoid extra baggage fees.

Stay in budget accommodation:

Skip the fancy hotels and opt for budget-friendly accommodation options such as hostels, Airbnb, or guesthouses. Not only will you save money on your stay, but you’ll also get a chance to connect with other travelers and locals.

Use public transportation:

Instead of relying on taxis or private transfers, use public transportation to get around European cities. Most cities have efficient and affordable metro systems, buses, and trams that will take you to popular attractions and landmarks. Consider getting a tourist pass for unlimited travel within a certain period.

Eat like a local:

Dining out in Europe can be pricey, especially in touristy areas. Opt for local markets, street food vendors, or small family-owned restaurants to save money on food. You’ll get to taste authentic cuisine at a fraction of the cost of upscale eateries.

Take advantage of free attractions:

Europe has numerous free attractions, including museums, parks, churches, and historic sites. Plan your itinerary around these freebies to maximize your experience without spending a dime.

Go on walking tours:

Many European cities offer free or low-cost walking tours led by knowledgeable guides. These tours give you an insider’s perspective on the city and allow you to exercise while exploring hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path spots.

Plan day trips:

Instead of staying in expensive city centers, consider day trips to nearby towns or countryside areas. Not only will you save money on accommodation, but you’ll also get to explore different facets of the destination.

Following these budget-friendly travel secrets allows you to explore Europe without compromising on the experience. So pack your bags, lace up your walking shoes, and embark on an unforgettable journey through Europe’s diverse and enchanting continent. Happy travels!

5 Sneaky Tricks to Guarantee a FREE Upgrade on Your Cruise!

by Porthole Cruise and Travel May 7, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Imagine stepping onto a luxurious cruise ship only to find out that you’ve been upgraded to a premium suite with ocean views and exclusive amenities. It’s the stuff dreams are made of, right? While scoring a free upgrade on a cruise isn’t guaranteed, there are some tips and tricks you can try to increase your chances of enjoying a more lavish vacation experience. In this blog, we reveal five secrets to securing an upgrade on your next cruise adventure.

1. Book Early and Be Loyal

One of the best ways to increase your chances of snagging an upgrade is by booking your cruise early. Cruise lines often prioritize upgrades for passengers who booked their cabins well in advance. Additionally, if you are a frequent cruiser with a particular cruise line, consider joining their loyalty program. Loyalty members may receive perks such as complimentary cabin upgrades based on their status level.

2. Travel During Off-Peak Seasons

Cruise ships are typically busiest during peak travel seasons, such as summer and holidays. To improve your chances of scoring an upgrade, consider booking your cruise during off-peak times when ships are less crowded. Cruise lines may be more likely to offer upgrades to fill empty cabins and provide a better experience for guests.

3. Be Flexible with Your Cabin Choice

When booking your cruise, try to remain flexible with your cabin preferences. Opting for a “guaranteed” cabin or being open to different cabin categories increases your chances of being considered for an upgrade. Remember, cruise lines may offer upgrades based on availability, so being open to changes can work in your favor.

4. Celebrate a Special Occasion

Are you celebrating a special occasion during your cruise, such as a birthday, anniversary, or honeymoon? Let the cruise line know! Inform them of your celebration when booking or upon check-in. Cruise lines often go the extra mile to make special occasions memorable for passengers, which may include complimentary upgrades to enhance your experience.

5. Build a Relationship with Your Travel Agent

A knowledgeable travel agent can be your best ally in securing a cruise upgrade. Work with a trusted agent who has a good relationship with cruise lines and can advocate on your behalf for potential upgrades. Travel agents often have insider knowledge and access to special promotions that may include complimentary cabin upgrades for their clients.

While there’s no guarantee that you’ll receive an upgrade on your cruise, implementing these strategies can increase your chances of enjoying a more luxurious experience on the high seas. Remember, the key is to stay positive, be flexible, and keep an open mind to unexpected opportunities that may come your way. Happy cruising!

Virgin Voyages’ Brilliant Lady Sets Sail in September 2025

by Julie Bouchner May 2, 2024
written by Julie Bouchner

Virgin Voyages is launching Brilliant Lady in September 2025! The ship will offer longer itineraries up to 14 nights across various destinations, including New York City, Bermuda, Los Angeles, Mexico, Miami, the ABC Islands, Seattle, and Alaska, as well as a voyage through the Panama Canal.

Brilliant Lady, the final addition to Virgin Voyages’ Lady Ships fleet, will feature the signature elements that Sailors love, including thoughtfully designed spaces, red balcony hammocks, award-winning dining options, a Happenings Cast instead of a traditional cruise director, and upscale wellness areas. Its modified design sets Brilliant Lady apart, allowing it to navigate the Panama Canal and explore rugged landscapes like Alaska’s glaciers and fjords.

“Virgin Voyages started as a simple idea for me and has blossomed into the world’s top cruise line with a full fleet of ships,” said Sir Richard Branson, Founder of Virgin Group. “This ship is going to be brilliant in every possible way, and that includes the incredible new places we can travel to. Alaska, LA, New York – here we come!”

MORE ABOUT BRILLIANT LADY

Just like her predecessors, Brilliant Lady will showcase a stunning new mermaid designed by Toronto-based illustrator Janice Sung. This mermaid draws inspiration from historic Renaissance paintings and traditional Japanese and Chinese art, fashion, and beauty. Virgin Voyages will gradually unveil updates on the dining and entertainment offerings of Brilliant Lady, along with the introduction of this captivating new guardian.

Virgin Voyages’ CEO Nirmal Saverimuttu said, “The world has been waiting for us to announce Brilliant Lady’s debut, and she’s almost here. At Virgin Voyages, we’re constantly innovating and looking for opportunities to provide even better value for our Sailors with greater choice. Virgin fans have been asking for years if we’d consider sailing from places like New York, Los Angeles or Alaska, so it’s wonderful to give our Sailors and First Mates what they wanted: fresh itineraries spanning North America from 5- 14 nights in length with new experiences that they will remember forever. As the fourth and final ship in our fleet for now, Brilliant Lady will not disappoint.”

Brilliant Lady will launch its inaugural season in September 2025, starting from New York City, with voyages ranging from 5 to 13 nights. The ship will sail to Bermuda, Quebec City, Maine, Charleston, Boston, Halifax, and New Brunswick. Following that, from October 2025 to April 2026, Brilliant Lady will offer 7 to 12-night voyages from Miami to destinations such as the ABC islands, Cartagena, Turks & Caicos, Antigua, Grand Cayman, and Ocho Rios, Jamaica.

In March 2026, there will be a special 16-night Panama Canal crossing voyage from Miami to Los Angeles. The ship will stop in Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Antigua, and Los Cabos.

From April to May 2026, Brilliant Lady will have four voyages ranging from 5 to 8 nights departing from Los Angeles. The itineraries will include ports in Baja California, Puerto Vallarta, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Catalina Island.

In the summer of 2026, the ship will sail to Alaska from Seattle, offering various itineraries from May through September. “Front(ier) of the Line Pass” and “Brilliant 4 You Pass” options are available for early booking and exclusive access to Alaskan voyages and other amenities.

Students to Receive Tourism and Hospitality Scholarships from TradeUP! at Palm Beach State College

by Porthole Cruise and Travel May 2, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Jeffrey Firestone, founder of the Firestone Group Inc and ChariTEES.org of Boca Raton, Florida, has launched TradeUP! – a scholarship program for students residing in the Caribbean that provides online access to higher education with Palm Beach State College.

Mr. Firestone has been serving the Caribbean markets with products and services for over forty years. “I am more than grateful to this region. TradeUP! is my way of giving back through the power of higher education. I am honored to work with the Foundation for Palm Beach State College and the faculty of the hospitality program, who have developed a comprehensive curriculum for tourism, hospitality and event management programs. I am working closely with charitable organizations on several Caribbean islands as they choose and then mentor Palm Beach State students throughout their online education.”

Mr. David Rutherford, CEO of the Foundation for Palm Beach State College, recognizes the extraordinary value in expanding access to education. “We have a diverse population of students, including those from the Caribbean. Providing them with access to education not only empowers them and their economic mobility but also elevates the impact of both the College and the communities that benefit.”

Jeffrey Firestone agrees and is looking forward to how impactful the scholarship can be. “Twelve one-year and two-year scholarships are already funded for January 2025, with ten students from Antigua, Barbados, St. Lucia and St. Kitts and two others from Florida. Local businesses, civic organizations and mentors in the Caribbean are playing a crucial role in providing internships and potential employment opportunities for students post-graduation.”

Corporations who support TradeUP! now have much needed access to new and talented employees from a pool of graduates who complement their workforce. Firestone and the TradeUP! team are working with corporations to create incentive programs that offer employees opportunities to pursue an online education at Palm Beach State College, truly a meaningful way for these companies to give back to their employees and invest in their future.

To ensure its ongoing success, TradeUP! seeks tax deductible donations from the cruise, hotel, food service and airline industries as well as corporate travel agencies and other tourism and hospitality related businesses that have profited from the region. Firestone hopes these companies are also willing to reciprocate, helping to grow this concept and impact communities through these scholarships. “We also encourage and invite the Caribbean diaspora to help students from their own countries through contributions and involvement to support their local students in achieving their academic and professional goals. After all, their success means success for their communities.”

All gifts are to be sent directly to The Palm Beach State College Foundation, Inc. (EIN 59-1818556) to benefit the TradeUP! Fund.

Pack Smart: 5 Items to Leave at Home When Going on a Cruise

by Porthole Cruise and Travel April 30, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Are you getting ready for an upcoming cruise vacation and wondering what you should pack? While it’s important to bring along all the essentials, there are some items that you can leave behind to save space in your luggage. Here are five things you do not need to bring on a cruise:

Towels

Most cruise lines provide towels for use in the pool and on the beach, so there’s no need to pack your own. Plus, using the ship’s towels means you won’t have to worry about getting sand or chlorine on your own towels.

Hairdryer

Cruise ship cabins are equipped with hairdryers, so there’s no need to bring your own. This will save you space in your luggage and make packing a bit easier.

Power Strip

Most cruise cabins have limited power outlets, but bringing a power strip is usually unnecessary. Instead, consider bringing a portable charger for your devices to make sure they stay charged throughout your trip.

Candles and Incense

Open flames are typically not allowed on cruise ships due to fire hazards. If you want to create a cozy atmosphere in your cabin, stick to battery-operated candles.

Snorkeling Gear

While it may be tempting to bring your own snorkeling equipment for exploring underwater wonders, many cruise destinations offer equipment rentals or guided excursions with gear provided. Save space in your luggage by taking advantage of these options rather than lugging around bulky snorkels and masks.

By leaving these items behind, you can save space in your luggage and avoid unnecessary hassle while on your cruise vacation. Focus on packing the essentials and enjoy a stress-free getaway on the high seas.

Fit and Balanced: Staying Active on a Cruise

by Porthole Cruise and Travel April 29, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Cruises are known for being a time of relaxation and indulgence, with endless buffets, cocktails, and luxurious amenities. However, staying fit and healthy while cruising is entirely possible with a bit of planning and dedication. Finding a balance between enjoying delicious food and drinks while also staying active is key to ensuring a memorable and health-conscious vacation.

Utilizing the Onboard Gym

Most cruise ships are equipped with state-of-the-art fitness centers catering to various workout preferences. Whether you’re a cardio enthusiast, strength training lover, or prefer group fitness classes, the onboard gym has something for everyone. Head to the gym early in the morning or during off-peak hours to avoid crowds and enjoy uninterrupted workout sessions. Make the most of the cardio machines, weight lifting equipment, and stretching areas to keep your body moving and energized.

Trying a Workout Class

Spice up your fitness routine by joining a workout class offered onboard the cruise. From high-energy Zumba classes to calming yoga sessions, there are a variety of classes to suit different fitness levels and interests. Working out in a group setting can be motivating and enjoyable, and it’s a great way to meet fellow cruisers who share your passion for staying active. Check the daily schedule for class timings and sign up in advance to secure your spot.

Finding Balance

While it’s important to prioritize fitness during your cruise, finding balance and allowing yourself to indulge in the culinary delights and onboard luxuries is equally important. Opt for healthier food choices whenever possible, such as fresh salads, grilled proteins, and fruit for dessert. Remember to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day and limit alcohol consumption to avoid excess calories and dehydration.

In addition to physical wellness, prioritizing mental well-being is crucial for a holistic approach to fitness. Take time to relax and unwind by participating in onboard spa treatments, meditation sessions, or simply lounging by the pool with a good book. Balancing physical activity with relaxation will ensure you return home feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Staying fit and healthy on a cruise is not just about hitting the gym or attending workout classes – it’s about finding a harmonious blend of exercise, indulgence, and relaxation. By making conscious choices and prioritizing your well-being, you can enjoy all the perks of a cruise vacation while keeping your health goals on track. So, pack your workout gear, lace up your sneakers, and embark on a fitness-focused cruise adventure that nourishes both your body and soul.

Here is What You Need to Know Before Booking a Cruise for Your Honeymoon

by Porthole Cruise & Travel April 25, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise & Travel

Now that you’ve tied the knot and officially said, “I do,” it’s time to kick off your new journey together with an unforgettable honeymoon adventure. And what better way to celebrate your love than by embarking on a romantic cruise? Get ready to sail away to paradise, unwind in luxury, and create precious memories that will last a lifetime. So, pack your bags, grab your partner’s hand, and let’s set sail on a honeymoon cruise like no other!

Choose the Right Cruise Line

Before booking your honeymoon cruise, research different cruise lines to find one that best suits your preferences and budget. Some cruise lines cater more to families or party-goers, while others offer more intimate and romantic settings for honeymooners.

Select the Perfect Itinerary: Consider the destinations and ports of call offered by different cruise itineraries. Do you dream of exploring exotic locales, relaxing on tropical beaches, or experiencing vibrant city life? Choose an itinerary that aligns with your honeymoon vision and allows you to create special memories together.

Opt for a Balcony Stateroom

To enhance the romantic ambiance of your honeymoon cruise, consider booking a balcony stateroom. Waking up to stunning ocean views, enjoying private sunsets, and dining al fresco on your own balcony can elevate your honeymoon experience to the next level.

Plan Excursions Wisely

Take advantage of the unique experiences offered at each port of call by planning excursions in advance. Whether you prefer adventurous activities, cultural tours, or beach days, select excursions that cater to your interests as a couple and allow you to create unforgettable moments together.

Inform the Cruise Line

Remember to notify the cruise line of your honeymoon celebration. Many cruise lines offer special perks and amenities for honeymooners, such as complimentary champagne, romantic dinners, or room decorations. Inform the cruise line in advance to make your honeymoon cruise even more special.

Pack Accordingly

When packing for your honeymoon cruise, consider the activities and dress codes on board. Bring both casual and formal attire for dining, as well as swimsuits, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes for excursions. Don’t forget to pack any necessary travel documents, medications, and essentials to ensure a stress-free honeymoon.

Enjoy Quality Time Together

Above all, use this opportunity to relax, unwind, and enjoy quality time together as newlyweds. Disconnect from the outside world, savor each moment, and create lasting memories that will kick off your marriage on a magical note.

Following these tips and considerations ensures that your honeymoon cruise is an unforgettable experience you and your partner will cherish forever. Congratulations on your marriage, and happy honeymoon!
