Celebrate This Victory in 2025

by Judi Cuervo October 15, 2024
written by Judi Cuervo

No matter who takes the oath of office in Washington DC next year, America has something to celebrate:  the 2025 launch of Victory Cruise Lines!

From April through October 2025, the intimate 190-passenger/86-crew Victory I and Victory II offer a staggering 33 voyages that allow guests to experience all five of the nation’s Great Lakes in a single 9- or 10-night sailing.  This is an all-inclusive experience, one that includes a one-night pre-cruise premium hotel stay (the only Great Lakes cruise line to do that), fine dining at multiple onboard restaurants, unlimited beverages, Wi-Fi, entertainment, expert guides, a complimentary shore excursion in each port, and more.

Last week, porthole.com joined Victory Cruise Lines’ Chairman and Founder John Waggoner, the previous owner of American Queen Voyages which operated Victory I and Victory II when they sailed as Ocean Voyager and Ocean Navigator, respectively. He and his wife Claudette welcomed media and special guests to a lavish event at New York City’s Chef’s Dinner Table for a sneak peek into what we may expect from Victory Cruise Lines.  And we learned there’s a whole lot to celebrate!

Celebrate the Victories:  Purpose-built for cruising the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence Seaway, and the Canadian Maritimes, the newly-renovated Victory I and Victory II easily navigate the canals, locks, and tranquil bays of the Great Lakes while offering a casually elegant onboard ambience and classically adorned oceanview accommodations (some with veranda) laden with amenities.  Open bars and lounges, a full-service salon and spa, 24-hour fitness center, and inviting décor create a warm and cozy atmosphere conducive to relaxation and social interaction.

Celebrate the Dining:  Think tantalizing dishes like roasted lamb or fresh Atlantic lobster sourced from the local waters of the Great Lakes accompanied by fresh produce from the region’s farms.  Victory Cruise Lines serves up culinary creativity, whether you opt for lighter, healthy dining or rich, decadent fare.  And, amazingly for such intimate ships, guests may feast at any of three sumptuous dining venues:  The main Coastal Dining Room which serves full breakfast, lunch, and dinner; the intimate Tavern; or the reservations-required Tuscan Stone Grill, an exciting dinner concept where guests’ favorite ingredients are sizzled to perfection atop slabs of pure volcanic rock.  And, of course, with Victory Cruise Lines’ open-bar policy, wine, beer, and cocktails are on the house 24/7, as are other treats like soft-serve ice cream and specialty coffees.

Celebrate the Destination:  The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in Detroit?  The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland?  Perhaps the majesty of Niagara Falls or the paradise of car-free Mackinac Island.  With Victory Cruise Lines’ Great Lakes itineraries, you need not choose because you can do it all!  The most popular sailings, the 10-night cruise/hotel option from Chicago to Toronto or reverse, visit Chicago (the only ship to dock at the city’s Navy Pier), Escabana, Mackinac Island, Sault Ste. Marie, Detroit, Cleveland, Niagara Falls, Ontario, and Toronto while navigating all five of The Great Lakes.

Celebrate the History:  The Great Lakes region is filled with fascinating history, from its geologic origins to its plant, sea, and animal life and its industry.  To inform, entertain, and educate its guests, Victory Cruise Lines has partnered with the National Museum of the Great Lakes to develop a “LakeLorian” program that features a knowledgeable and passionate expert aboard each sailing to lead lectures, host discussions, and answer questions throughout the journey.

John Claudette | Photo: Judi Cuervo

For the Waggoners, the creation of Victory Cruise Lines is a family affair. The purchase of Victory I and Victory II marks the return of two beloved vessels to their watch and, in fact, the godmother of Victory I will be their daughter, Emily Coleman.  They’re joined in the endeavor by many of the executives who played a starring role in their previous venture which began with the purchase of the iconic American Queen and expanded to a fleet of ships.

Will John acquire additional ships for Victory Cruises?  “I’m not saying yes, I’m not saying no,” he insists.

These days, it seems, everyone sounds like a politician.

A Multi-Cultural Carnival

by Jason Leppert October 14, 2024
written by Jason Leppert

(To the tune of Dean Martin’s famed Italian song “That’s Amore”):

Watch the stars in the sky as you stroll the Lanai — on Firenze.

You can drink lots of wine and get lost on Deck Nine — on Firenze.

There is so much to eat; try Nonna’s bowls of meat — on Firenze.

So, now come take a trip on this beautiful ship — on Firenze!

Those were just some of the playfully parodied lyrics sung by the Carnival Firenze cruise director — as first introduced by Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador John Heald — when I sailed on the new ship’s maiden voyage. And they perfectly set the international scene as the red, white, and blue met the red, white, and green, as it were.

Of course, you may be wondering just how a Carnival ship, still sporting a corporate-cousin Costa Cruises funnel, got to this point — because it’s quite an interesting story, one where American, Chinese, Italian, and Mexican cultures all happen to meet.

An Italian Origin

Prior to the pandemic, Costa had the fresh, 2019-built Costa Venezia and 2020-built Costa Firenze ready to go. They were meant to bring Italian-style cruising to the Chinese market, but both were redeployed to the Mediterranean. Following the global crisis and the scrapping of several older Carnival ships, it was deemed prudent to add capacity back to the “Fun Ship” brand with newer, already-available hardware, so these ships later became the New York-based Carnival Venezia and now Los Angeles-based Carnival Firenze.

Venezia first sailed under its new livery in 2023, and the only lightly used Firenze was rechristened in 2024 to navigate the Mexican Riviera from its year-round California homeport. As a Vista-class vessel, she most closely resembles her sister ship Carnival Panorama, also sailing from the port of Long Beach, but she sports many differences as well.

Ship With a Difference

Firenze is missing Carnival’s signature “whale tail” funnel, maintaining its original Costa “C” stack, but her hull design displays the line’s usual blue flourish, this time with a matching yellow stripe. The Carnival logo further adorns the aft sides while “Fun Italian Style” is inscribed to follow each.

As curb appeal — or rather pier appeal — goes, it’s a bit of a branding hodgepodge, but in the end, it works.

In fact, private accommodations and several public spaces are actually elevated by Carnival standards. Balcony staterooms, for instance, share a common footprint with other Vista-class ships, but on Firenze, dark, natural wood paneling is classier, framing Italian photography at headboards. And pedestal lavs and cultured marble counters and shelving give bathrooms a glow-up.

Replacing the Havana ship-within-a-ship concept found on other vessels in the series are Terrazza (“terrace” in Italian) staterooms and suites, where guests get exclusive access to the Terrazza Moda sun deck overlooking the stern with lots of loungers, a pair of inviting whirlpools, and dedicated bar.

Firenze is named after Florence, and its Piazza Del Duomo atrium architecturally channels the Italian city with a golden lion statue perched on a central pillar. If anything, the flashier aesthetic is a partial return to the style of Carnival’s former interior designer Joe Farcus and his.…

International Dining in Istanbul

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine October 10, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

If you think Turkish food is limited to kebabs, think again. Istanbul, the former Ottoman capital, has long been home to peoples from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. The 21st century has welcomed even more newcomers, so now there’s a wide range of delectable dining establishments to enjoy.

Like Il Cortile Ristorante Pizzeria near Galata Tower in Beyoğlu, where they serve Italian in a former French elementary school designed by an architect of Swiss origin. When completed in 1842, Italian Dominican priests taught Christian, Jewish, and Muslim students with French as the language of instruction. The building was the work of Gaspare Trajano Fossati, best known for the Church of St Esprit in Şişli and repairs to the Hagia Sophia.

Today, crisp pizzas topped with fresh ingredients are only one of the tempting options available. Carpaccio heads the antipasti while handmade pastas such as fettuccine with lemon and shrimp vie for attention with stand-out Ligurian Genoese-style porcini mushrooms or casseroled salted sea bass. Tickle your tastebuds with a cocktail as you drink in the atmosphere, too. Abstract sculptural pieces emphasize the architectural order of tightly packed exposed brick walls, some of which were part of the original 14th-century Genoese fortifications.

The prestigious Gault and Millau awarded the restaurant a Toque in 2024 so whether you want to dine inside or in il cortile, the courtyard, bookings are essential.

Expand your horizons at Banyan Restaurant with Bosphorus views and sultry beats from the inhouse DJ on weekends. Their Michelin Guide-worthy menu brings a taste of the East to Ortaköy — east and southeastern Asia and Turkey that is. Antioch-born chef Fikret Demirağ melds the fiery heat of Antakya with the subtle nuance of the Orient, coming up with innovative combinations that cater to all the senses.

The Asian-Turkish cocktail tasting menu includes pairings such as a spicy gin-and-jalapeño cocktail with Seared Salmon Sashimi in pomegranate teriyaki. Kimchi aioli and wild oregano fuse in Harbiye Chicken Sliders for mains, and Miso Irmik elevates a traditional Turkish almond-and-semolina dessert to a sublime experience, served with miso butter and vanilla ice cream.

As the name suggests, the Art Nouveau Ravouna 1906 Coffee and Bar in Beyoğlu was built in the early 20th century. It was designed in 1894 as a shop and home for an Italian family by Constantinos R. Kyriakides, an Istanbul-born Greek (an ethnicity known as Rum). Italians Giuseppe and Alfredo Michelini provided the capital. Work started in 1901, with fellow Rum and architect Alexandre Demitrios Neocosmos creating the burnished wooden cabinets still used in the bar. They were crafted to display antiques sold in .…

Oceania Cruises Unveils The Crêperie on Allura

by Julie Bouchner October 9, 2024
written by Julie Bouchner

Oceania Cruises has announced details of its new culinary venue, the Crêperie, set to debut on Allura in July 2025!

Located next to Baristas, the cruise line’s signature coffee bar, the Crêperie will serve a variety of French crêpes, Brussels waffles, bubble waffles, and Italian ice cream sundaes from mid-morning until afternoon.

ABOUT Crêperie

Executive Culinary Directors and Master Chefs of France, Alex Quaretti and Eric Barale, have created over 20 recipes for the menu, including the classic crêpe Suzette and Brussels waffles topped with fresh bananas, salted caramel sauce, and whipped cream. Guests will also have the option to customize their own sweet treats, offering numerous combinations.

“Allura, our eighth elegant small ship, represents the next step in Oceania Cruises’ evolution and a new way of exploring the world. Food is at the heart of everything we do at Oceania Cruises; The Finest Cuisine at Sea® is not just a tagline, it’s a philosophy which drives our whole business,” said Frank A. Del Rio, President of Oceania Cruises. “However, finest does not always mean the fanciest – and our more relaxed, yet still refined, culinary venues, such as the beautiful new Crêperie aboard Allura, is a perfect example of this. With this addition on board Allura, our guests have never had more choice in what to eat and when – and of course all our dining venues on board are included for all guests free of charge.”

Chef Alex Quaretti added: “We cannot wait for Allura to join the fleet, and the new Crêperie concept is a great addition to our onboard culinary venues. Located next to Baristas and just around the corner from the very popular Bakery, the new Crêperie completes this sociable and temptingly delicious corner of the ship.

Chefs Alex and Eric are finalizing menu developments for Allura and other culinary initiatives to be introduced across the eight-ship fleet next year. More announcements are expected in the coming months.

The Crêperie will be the 12th dining venue on Allura, joining the following:

  • The Grand Dining Room: Offers Jacques Pepin’s French classics, global dishes, and a four-course food and wine pairing option.
  • The Terrace Café: Features international cuisine with seaside views.
  • Polo Grill: A classic steakhouse.
  • Toscana: Specializes in Italian cuisine.
  • Red Ginger: Serves pan-Asian dishes.
  • Ember: Offers modern twists on American classics.
  • Aquamar Kitchen: Focuses on wellness-inspired cuisine with a touch of indulgence.
  • Waves Grill: By day, it serves poolside gourmet sandwiches and burgers and turns into an al fresco pizzeria at night.
  • The Bakery at Baristas: Features freshly baked French and Italian pastries.
  • Afternoon Tea at Horizons: A daily tea service at 4 PM.
  • Privée: A private dining experience for special occasions.

ABOUT ALLURA

  • Allura is Oceania Cruises’ eighth ship and the second in the 1,200-guest Allura Class, following Vista, launched in May 2023.
  • The ship has an 800-member crew serving 1,200 guests, with one chef for every ten guests and five complimentary specialty dining venues, including Ember and Aquamar Kitchen.
  • She features standard staterooms of 291 square feet, various small group shore excursions, and onboard activities like art classes and guest speakers.
  • Guests can explore the Culinary Center for cooking classes and a library with floor-to-ceiling glass walls.

Your World Included

Every guest on Oceania Cruises benefits from Your World Included, which offers a selection of included amenities: dining at all gourmet specialty restaurants and the Crêperie; sodas, juices, specialty coffees, and teas; still and sparkling Vero Water; unlimited Starlink WiFi; in-room dining; smoothies, gelato, and artisan ice cream; group fitness classes; laundry services; and gratuities for stateroom attendants, butlers, and dining staff.

“I know our guests will be delighted by the range of delicious fluffy waffles, delicate crêpes, and myriad flavors of Italian ice cream served in a bubble waffle wrap, cone or bowl – the challenge will be choosing which toppings. Among my personal favorites is the French crêpe with Nutella and whipped cream – it reminds me of being taught how to cook the perfect crêpe by my grandmother when I was growing up.”
