New NCL Ship Norwegian VIVa Coming in 2023

Norwegian Cruise Line announced the name and sailing location of their newest Prima-class cruise ship!

Norwegian Viva will debut on her maiden voyage in June 2023 sailing the Mediterranean with four unique homeports: Lisbon, Portugal; Venice (Trieste) and Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy; and Athens (Piraeus), Greece.  Following summer in the Mediterranean, the ship will reposition to the Caribbean for sailings from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The ship is nearly identical to sister ship Norwegian Prima, and is the second of six Prima-class ships scheduled to be built by the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, Italy.

A Premium Experience on Norwegian Viva 

According to president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line Harry Sommer, the ship sets the standard for a premium cruise experience.

“Norwegian Viva sets the standard in the premium segment, illustrating our commitment to pushing boundaries in four main areas: wide open space, service that puts guests first, thoughtful design and experiences beyond expectation. We have taken everything our guests love to the next level with this brand-new class of ships designed with them in mind,” he said. 

Luigi Matarazzo, the General Manager Merchant Ships Division at Fincantieri shipyard, spoke on the relationship between NCL and the shipyard. 

“Norwegian Viva, the second of six Prima Class vessels being built with us, reinforces the great collaboration between Norwegian Cruise Line and Fincantieri,” he said. “We were extremely satisfied that Norwegian Prima, the first of the new class, earned record-breaking bookings and we are excited to see how Norwegian Viva will live up to her sister ship. As we proved our resilience during these challenging times, this announcement represents another testament to Fincantieri´s global leadership role in the cruise sector.”

About Norwegian Viva

At 965 feet long, 142,500 gross tons and space for up to 3,219 guests at double occupancy, the ship is slightly smaller than the previous builds from Norwegian Cruise Line, but all the same quality dining, entertainment and relaxation found on board. The smaller size offers the highest staffing levels and space ratio of any new cruise ship in the contemporary and premium cruise categories and largest variety of suite categories available at sea. 

Like previous new builds, Norwegian Viva will feature The Haven by Norwegian, NCL’s ultra-premium keycard only access ship-within-a-ship concept with 107 premium suites with a sundeck, an infinity pool overlooking the ship’s wake and an outdoor spa with a glass-walled sauna and cold room.

 

Other features will include the fastest freefall drop dry slides at sea with The Rush and The Drop and the largest three-level racetrack at sea with the Viva Speedway. There’s also Ocean Boulevard, a 44,000 square foot outdoor walk way which wraps around the entire ship;  Indulge Food Hall featuring 11 varieties of eateries; The Concourse outdoor sculpture garden; expansive pool decks and infinity style pools at Infinity Beach and Oceanwalk, showcasing glass bridges above water.

Environmental Alternative Technology

The first two Prima-class vessels from Norwegian Cruise Line will feature alternative tech aimed at reducing environmental impacts. Advancements include a NOx reduction system (SCR) which filters out sulfur oxides up to 98% and nitrogen oxides up to 90%, ensuring the vessels meet Tier III NOx compliance. Further, the ships will be equipped with an Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS), an Advanced Wastewater Treatment System to treat and clean all wastewater to meet international standards and Cold Ironing functionality to connect to onshore power grids to further reduce emissions while in port. 

The hull art was designed by Italian graffiti and sculpture artist Manuel Di Rita, commonly known as “Peeta” and Rockwell Group, SMC Design and Miami-based Studio Dado contributed to the architecture and design.

Port Seattle is Cruising’s Gateway to Alaska

Cruising’s Return to Seattle

July 2021 saw the return of cruise embarkations from Port of Seattle and through the rest of the summer, ships from some of the most notable lines in cruising set sail with course to Alaska. Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises and more made the most of a shortened 2021 season and all are ready to make 2022 one of the best ever for Pacific Northwest cruising. 

The port’s Cruise Healthy campaign helped reopen the port with a community-first approach to health and safety. Masks are required inside the cruise terminals as well as on public transportation. The port installed new safety features like a new air filtration system, protective barriers, and touchless fixtures in bathrooms.

What to do in Downtown Seattle 

What makes Seattle one of the best embarkation cities for cruise ships is the cruise terminal’s location along Puget Sound in the heart of Seattle’s lively downtown area. From the Space Needle to Pike Place Market and everything in between, Seattle is well on its way to being one of the most underrated vacation cities in the country and cruisers are seeing that firsthand when they embark from Port of Seattle. 

Cruising in the summer means you can get into vacation mode before your cruise with a hike through Discovery Park or catch a Seattle Mariners game before dinner at one of Downtown Seattle’s premier restaurants. 

Port Valet Luggage Service 

Now that cruising is back in the Emerald City, Port of Seattle is encouraging cruisers to take advantage of their free airport Port Valet service. The service means cruisers don’t have to carry their luggage all over the city while they wait for their flight and instead, their bag arrives conveniently at the baggage carousel after the flight home. On the last night of your cruise, you’ll receive your airline boarding passes and special luggage tags from the cruise line. Set your bags outside and your luggage will be securely transferred directly from the cruise ship and checked in with your airline all the way to your destination airport. 

It’s easy to enroll in the Port Valet service online and makes for a much easier debarkation day after your cruise from Seattle!

NCL Redesigns Latitudes Rewards Program Tier System

Chances are you didn’t make much use of Norwegian Cruise Line’s Latitudes Rewards Program in 2020 or 2021. But there’s some good news for frequent NCL cruisers who are looking to make full use of the program in 2022. 

The cruise line has enhanced the rewards program with a newly redesigned tier structure that will make it easier for cruisers to sail their way through the tiers and enjoy all the benefits that come with. Cruisers earn one Rewards Point for every night they sail, with an additional point per night for suite and The Haven by Norwegian guests, as well as for members who book a Latitudes Rewards Insider Offer. Guests are automatically enrolled in the program once they return home from their first cruise.

Updated Latitudes Rewards Program Tiers

The updated rewards program is now made up of seven tiers, including a brand-new Diamond status as well as Sapphire, which replaces the previous Platinum Plus tier. Almost all tiers now feature a reduced points requirement to unlock each new status level, allowing cruisers a faster rise to the top. For example, Silver status is now available to guests with 20 Rewards Points, compared to 30 previously, allowing guests who book a 10-day voyage in a suite to automatically reach Silver status after a single cruise.


Not only will cruisers enjoy a quicker journey to the top tier, they’ll also have access to a range of new onboard experiences and special offers tiered according to their status, including a one-time free cabin upgrade, Wines Around the World tasting experience, Sail & Sustain Mixology experience, member cruises, internet package discounts and the novelty signature tier-status pins. 

Other onboard perks to being a Latitudes Rewards Program member include members-only cocktail parties, complimentary specialty dining and laundry service plus priority tender and disembarkation, as well as enjoy discounted shore excursions, duty-free shopping, photo packages and spa treatments. Not a bad haul for just taking a vacation!

First Impressions: World Navigator

The world has so much to explore. Perhaps that’s why the team at Atlas Ocean Voyages decided to attach such a global moniker to their first luxury adventure cruise ship. Built for the world’s most remote locales, the 196-passenger World Navigator has the toys to do adventure cruising the right way, but also the opulent amenities and guest-first approach to compete with the top brands in the small-ship, luxury cruising space.

World Navigator arrived slightly behind schedule thanks to the pandemic, but after spending more than a week on board during the ship’s maiden voyage through the Greek Islands, it’s clear the vessel was well worth the wait. By pairing a sleek new ship with an itinerary which includes some of the world’s most famous islands, Atlas Ocean Voyages has the recipe for an exquisite cruise vacation.

Small Ship, Big Potential

First impressions matter when it comes to a brand new ship and World Navigator gets off on the right foot. The first thing you notice on board is the elegant, art deco designs and glossy, dark wood paneling from floor to ceiling. It’s a call back to cruising’s heyday when ships were full of tuxedos and evening gowns. Public spaces are ample and feature unique themes and contemporary furniture with a chic style that definitely feels retro.

However, despite the decor, World Navigator is a very laid-back ship with a casual approach to luxury. You’re far more likely to pass your fellow cruisers in the hallways dressed for exploration for a day ashore than you are to see them in a gown. It feels upscale, but there’s no pressure at all from the staff to conform to that idea.

As with most small ships, when on board, you’re never far from anywhere. Of the six decks, guests spend the most time on Four and Seven; the rest are mostly staterooms. Four is home to Porto, the main restaurant; the grab-and-go option Paula’s Pantry; the Atlas Lounge; and L’Occitane spa and fitness studio. Deck Seven is where guests go to jump in the pool or one of two whirlpools. It’s also home to the Dome Lounge, the place to go in the evenings to mingle with your fellow guests.

I found myself making great use of Paula’s throughout the cruise, though I very much enjoyed sitting down for a full three-course lunch. Between the cruise-sanctioned shore excursions and the opportunity to explore a place like Old Town Mykonos or the remains of Akrotiri on Santorini meant a sandwich and fresh-squeezed juice to go was perfect as I strolled down the gangway on to my next adventure.

Speaking of adventure, World Navigator wasn’t built to be a leisurely cruiser. This polar-class vessel comes complete with a heli-pad, Zodiac boats, Jet Skis, and all manner of kayaks and paddleboards for guests to enjoy. There’s also a space at the bow of the ship on Deck Five called Water’s Edge which boasts heated benches, designed to be the perfect place to watch aquatic life when the ship cruises to icy waters.

Dining at Porto and 7Aft

Guests have options when meal time arrives on World Navigator, though not quite as many as other ships. The main dining room, Porto, is gorgeous upon first glance thanks to dark wood paneling and abstract carpet and furniture patterns that are elegant without being over-the-top or gaudy.

Through a set of automatic doors on the far wall of the restaurant, guests find what may be the best place to enjoy a meal on board World Navigator (weather permitting) — Porto’s outdoor section. Lined with wood planking, from the floors to the tables and chairs, the outdoor dining area was where hungry guests gravitated for an alfresco dining experience. The deck’s 180-degree views are much appreciated when anchored somewhere like the immense Santorini caldera at sunset.

If you’re looking for a quiet, relaxing cruise vacation, Royal Caribbean International’s Odyssey of the Seas may not be for you. Chock full of Royal Caribbean staples like the North Star, FloRider Surf Simulator and Sky Pad trampoline, kids and adults alike will find something on board that makes the cruise one to remember. 

Unique artwork both inside and out coupled with a laid-back, but still very active atmosphere and a host of specialty restaurants means you’ll most likely experience something new every day. Variety is the spice of life and there’s a little bit of everything on board Odyssey of the Seas!

If there’s one piece of advice for cruisers booked on Odyssey of the Seas, it’s bring your appetite. The dining options and quality of both the food and service stood out, particularly in the specialty dining restaurants. 

The Main Dining Room feels grand thanks to it’s two-deck design and large scale. Serving three meals a day, the rotating menu has plenty of favorites to choose and a number of international dishes as well. Complimentary dining options also include the more casual Windjammer Cafe, Solarium Bistro which serves lighter breakfast and lunch options, Sorrento’s New York-style pizza, The Cafe @ Two70, El Loco Fresh and the Cafe Promenade. 

Specialty restaurants are all the rage in cruising these days and Royal Caribbean made sure to offer a wide variety of regional cuisine in their specialty dining options. Chops, IZUMA, Wonderland, Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen, Teppanyaki, Playmakers Sports Bar and Grill are all upcharge restaurants, but they can certainly all be a delightful alternative after a few nights in the main dining room. 

Giovanni’s may be the only one frequent Royal Caribbean cruisers may not recognize right away as it’s been reimagined for Odyssey of the Seas. First appearing on Freedom of the Seas in 2020, Giovanni’s serves up classic Italian dishes like specialty hand-tossed pizzas, pastas, and of course, a fantastic list of wines to pair them with. Don’t forget a limoncello to finish it all off!

It might be shorter to list the things you can’t find on board Odyssey of the Seas. The ship is a floating amusement park for kids and adults alike and the only decision guests need to make is how extreme they want to get. 

Daredevils will love the FloRider Surfing Simulator or RipCord by iFLY while those looking for something a little less adventurous can opt for the Sky Pad or a ride in the North Star, Royal Caribbean’s 360-degree observation capsule that elevates hundreds of feet above the sea. There’s also a 4D virtual reality course called the Virtual Adventure Zone where guests can explore on their own and work together as a team to complete their mission. 

For larger groups, Odyssey of the Seas boasts the SeaPlex, the largest indoor activity space at sea. It’s where you can take the bumper cars for a spin, shoot hoops on the full size sports court, swing on the trapeze and play one of the many VR games around the space. The SeaPlex is also home to Clash for Crystal City, a glow in the dark laser tag battle. 

For those with younger children, Splashaway Bay will probably be a popular spot. The kid-sized water park features slides, water cannons, shallow pools and even a drench bucket.

Like most cruise cabins, space is at a premium, but Royal Caribbean found plenty of ways to maximize the potential of each stateroom. Adorned in shades of cream and blue, the 2,105 total rooms are sorted by interior, oceanview, balcony, virtual balcony and several different suite categories, including a two-bedroom ultimate family suite. 

Beds can be pushed together from two twins to a queen, making the room feel a little bigger. The storage space was ample with a closet and four-drawer dresser and plenty of small shelves for anything you might have with you. The in-room thermostat got the room nice and cold and there were ample outlets by the bed and the desk for charging all your devices. 

The Ultimate Family Suite can accommodate up to 8 guests in two-bedroom loft-style space that features a slide, air hockey, separate TV rooms, a large wrap-around balcony with a climbing wall and whirlpool. Added perks include access to the Coastal Kitchen restaurant as well as the suite-only lounge and sun deck. 

For single travelers, the studio oceanview is perfect as it doesn’t require the single supplement found with double occupancy staterooms. 

With so much to do on board, it’s unlikely you’ll be spending a ton of time in the room, but if you do, you won’t be disappointed.

Odyssey of the Seas takes entertainment seriously with multiple live music venues and the versatile Two70 theater, a two story lounge that converts into performance space in the evenings. A series of projectors creates a unique video backdrop for each performance, adding to the visual appeal of whatever show is on that night. 

The best performance to check out at Two70 is The Book: Seven Chapters, One Adventure, a show with incredible aerial performances, singing, dancing and more. Other shows that frequent Royal Caribbean cruisers will recognize are The Effectors and Showgirl: Past, Present and Future. 

Other popular spots to check out for live music include the Music Hall where bands rock out and cruisers take to the dance floor and the Crown And Compass Pub.

Barbados Has Streamlined Protocols for Cruises

The island of Barbados is open and ready to welcome cruise travelers, according to a new press release from the island’s tourism board. The island has streamlined port entry protocols for a safe and responsible visit to the island based on recommendations from Barbados’ Ministry of Health and Wellness. Barbados is one of the Caribbean’s cruise destinations with more than 25 cruise lines calling on the island with 800,000 visitors annually. 

Check out the changes below! 

Embarkation from Barbados 

The Barbados Ministry of Health and Wellness requires each cruise line to conduct health assessments of travelers prior to embarkation, which includes questions to identify symptoms that indicate a traveler’s health status.

Transit Calls and Shore Excursions

Travelers arriving on transit calls must have embarked at the respective homeport with a valid negative Standard, Rapid PCR or Antigen test taken within 3 days. Guests will only be permitted to disembark and take “bubble excursions” as defined below:

  1. Tours approved for sale by tour operators as authorized by cruise lines.
  2. Tours approved for sale by independent tour operators and taxi operators as authorized by the Government of Barbados following the appropriate health and security requirements.

Guests using option 2 must take approved taxis dispatched from secure designated taxi facilities within the Bridgetown Port or must have a pre-booked tour confirmed by email from an approved tour operator for pick up in the Bridgetown Port.

Fully vaccinated guests arriving into Barbados with a negative Antigen test taken within 3 days of arrival will be permitted free shore leave.

Disembarkation and Island Stays

Cruisers disembarking and staying on Barbados for a post-cruise stay will be required to present a negative standard or rapid PCR test before unrestricted access to the destination is permitted. Post-cruise guests may be swabbed onboard their cruise ship or at the Bridgetown Port and may then proceed to their accommodations to await test results. If available, guests may proceed directly to their accommodations to be tested there and await the results.

Vaccination Status

Travelers will be considered fully vaccinated if they have completed a full regimen of vaccines for any of the Ministry of Health and Wellness approved COVID-19 vaccinations, at least 14 days prior to travel to Barbados. Approved vaccines are AstraZeneca, Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech, Johnson & Johnson, Sinopharm, Sinovac, Sputnik V.

New and Improved PADL App

The team at PADL is always looking for ways to improve their service and they’ve done it once again with a new and improved app that updates the functionality and user experience. Riders can now rent multiple boards at once and users can also share their referral code and will get $20 in ride credit when their friend uses the service. That means the more you share, the more you ride for free!

You can also use the app to book yourself a tour or lesson for beginners and you can see the full schedule of PADL events happening near you. Paddleboarding meet ups are a great way to meet fun, new people who love paddleboarding just as much as you. Each meet up and lesson are run by a PADL-approved guide who knows everything there is about paddle boarding.

New PADL Locations 

The best part about PADL is you’re never far from a board rack no matter where you are in Florida. For those cruising from PortMiami, PADL now has TWO new locations in the area; one at the National Hotel on Miami Beach and the Selina Hotel on Miami’s mainland. That brings the number of PADL locations in the area to six so there’s always a board waiting for you! For those in North Florida, PADL has 5 locations within one hour of downtown Jacksonville so you’re never far from a PADL location.

Wine & Dine in Copenhagen’s Vesterbro District

Copenhagen is having a moment in the culinary limelight as Europe’s coolest foodie capital, with rough and ready Vesterbro the most exciting area of the city in which to try the latest food trends. Take a stroll along the streets of Slagterboderne (meaning “butcher’s stalls”) and Flaesketorvet (“flesh square”) and you’ll find eateries that offer new twists on Danish classics, those that play with fusing Danish food with other world cuisines, and, perhaps most surprising of all, innovative options for vegetarians and vegans in an area that was once the very epicentre for Denmark’s meat trade. A cattle market was established here in 1671 and operated until 1878, and by the early 1900s the area was dense with slaughterhouses, butchers’ shops, market halls, and cooling houses, until it fell into decline. In the late 1940s, there was talk of demolishing it all.

Copenhagen’s Coolest Neighborhood

Eighty years on, it’s now considered one of Copenhagen’s coolest neighborhoods, home to stylish galleries and boutiques, but don’t expect Vesterbro to be completely gentrified. It still has a pleasingly gritty vibe as many of the buildings are listed and must preserve their industrial architectural features. Within this neighborhood, you’ll find the old meatpacking district known as Kodbyen (“Meat City”) — brimming with cafes, restaurants, bars, and microbreweries, housed in former butcher’s shops, fishmongers, and market halls. Kodbyens Fiskebar was among the first restaurants to move in and help transform the area into a foodie heaven. It’s a no-frills basic place, with glimpses of its fish-mongering past found in the concrete floors and while-tiled walls, but that hasn’t stopped it making it into The Michelin Guide, testament that the seafood served here is some of the best in the city, with oysters a speciality.

WarPigs Brewpub is another constant on the dining scene; a vast warehouse of a pub run by Europe’s largest meat-smoking company, with an onsite brewery and a menu inspired by Texan-style barbecue. Winner of staying true to Kodbyen’s roots is Fleisch (its name taken from the German for “flesh”), which has a working butcher’s shop within its restaurant. Try the chef’s tasting menu of seven tapas-style meaty dishes. Even the drinks menu is meat-inspired, with homemade organic bacon-infused bourbon.

Pate Pate is the oldest restaurant in the district, housed in what was once a pâté factory, with a moody candlelit dining room and interesting menu inspired by the South of France and Spain, serving dishes designed to share. Highlights include pork braised with boskoop apples and sherry, braised Jerusalem artichokes, and a cheeseboard of local organic cheeses. If you’re not familiar with the Danish term hygge (pronounced “hoo-guh”), it broadly means “cozy” and can be used to describe anything, including food, that provokes a feeling of contentment. You’ll certainly experience it here.

Luxury cruise brand Azamara saw their ownership change hands during the pandemic, but they also added former Holland America Line executive Orlando Ashford in to smooth the transition and help the brand really excel. Leaving from Miami on February 15, 2022, Azamara Quest will call on Key West, Costa Maya and Cozumel with two days at sea. 

Azamara is a high end experience and normally the ticket can be pricey. However, this deal is one of the best we’ve seen as interior rooms start at $1079 per person. A balcony room will run you $1564 and for those looking for the ultimate luxury  cruise vacation, a suite on board starts at $2144. Azamara is also giving away up to $700 in onboard credit and everyone who books gets one complimentary AzAmazing Evening Event included. 

With a max capacity of just 1112 passengers on board Azamara Quest, the cruise line can focus on delivering a curated cruise experience for their guests. The ship underwent a refurbishment in 2019 to update public areas with new furniture and create a new live music lounge.

U.S. Virgin Islands Shorten Testing Window for Tourists

In a recent press release, the U.S. Virgin Islands announced that they’ve made changes to their COVID-19 testing protocols for visitors to the islands which reduces the time frame for pre-travel testing. All domestic air travelers to the U.S. Virgin Islands are required to present a negative result from a COVID-19 test taken within three days of travel. Previously the time frame for COVID-19 testing gave a five day window prior to travel. 

According to Governor Albert Bryan Jr., the shortened window for testing is due to the rapid spread of the new Omicron COVID-19 variant. Earlier this week, USVI Health Commissioner Justa Encarnacion announced that the islands had turned away two cruise ships recently as they had surpassed the 1% threshold for COVID-19 cases. 

“We have an agreement with them, if their numbers cross that threshold there’s no compromise, no conversation, they just can’t come,” the Governor said. “The cruise ships have been shut down for a year and a half, they’ve taken a tremendous hit to their business, they are one of their crucial tourism partners, and I want to make sure we give them a fair shake. They are under considerable pressure as it is with the Omicron variant. I’m praying for them and hoping they can get their situation under control on board so they don’t have to stop sailing again.”

International travelers to the United States must show proof of a negative result from a COVID-19 test (either antigen or PCR) taken within one calendar day of departure to the U.S. if they are arriving in the USVI via air from a foreign location, such as the British Virgin Islands or Antigua.

Strong Tourism Comeback for the Virgin Islands 

USVI Commissioner of Tourism Joseph Boschulte urged patience for travelers as his team tries to find a balance between allowing tourism and keeping locals safe. Boschulte reported that the winter season was off to a strong start with more than 100,000 submissions to the Travel Screening Portal.

Royal Caribbean Group Gives an Update on Omicron

In a press release this morning, Royal Caribbean Group provided an update to cruisers on how the company is approaching the new Omicron variant that’s currently spreading across the United States.

According to the cruise line, “Omicron has significantly altered the COVID-19 landscape for everyone, and the Royal Caribbean Group is no exception”. The press release notes that while Omicron is more infectious, thankfully the symptoms appear to be much more mild, particularly among the vaccinated. 

“Omicron is having a big short-term impact on everyone, but many observers see this as a major step towards COVID-19 becoming endemic rather than epidemic,” said Richard Fain, Chairman & CEO. “We don’t like to see even one case, but our experience is a fraction of the comparable statistics of virtually any other comparable location or industry. Few businesses are subject to such intense scrutiny, regulation, and disclosure requirements by so many authorities, and we welcome that scrutiny because of our commitment to safety. We intend to maintain our goal of delivering the safest vacation on land or sea and will constantly adjust our procedures to accomplish this even in the face of Omicron’s amazing transmissibility.”

Over 1.1 Million Cruise Passengers so Far 

Since Royal Caribbean resumed operation in June 2021, 1.1 million passengers have set sail with just 1,745 people testing positive – a positivity rate of 0.02%. Consistent with what the medical community has seen among breakthrough vaccinated cases, the vast majority of the cases had no symptoms or only mild symptoms, with only 41 people needing hospitalization. None of the Omicron cases have been severe or needed to be taken to a hospital.

Chief Medical Officer for the cruise line Dr. Calvin Johnson revealed that they had already begun providing crew with booster shots. 

“The company is navigating through the ever-evolving information on the Omicron variant.  Our case count has spiked, but the level of severity is significantly milder. We will remain nimble and in constant contact with health authorities. For example, even before Omicron, we have been giving all our crewmembers booster shots as they became eligible.”

Viking Takes Delivery of New Expedition Ship Viking Octantis

The first of two brand new adventure cruise ships from Viking is finally here and ready to begin sailing! Viking Octantis left Fincantieri’s VARD shipyard in Søviknes, Norway on December 23rd after a delivery ceremony held at the shipyard and will begin sailing with guests to Antarctica in January 2022. 

The ship will be officially named in April 2022 in New York City by her ceremonial godmother, Liv Arnesen, the Norwegian explorer and educator who led the first unsupported women’s crossing of the Greenland Ice Cap in 1992. Following the naming ceremony, ship will head to America’s Great Lakes for a series of voyages in the spring and summer. Viking is also hard at work on an identical sister ship, Viking Polaris, set to join the fleet in August 2022 for journeys to the Arctic and Antarctica.

About Viking Octantis 

With capacity for just 378 guests, Viking Octantis was designed by Richard Riviere of international interior design firm Rottet Studio of Los Angeles, a company Viking has used in the past for both their river and ocean fleet. Viking custom-built their new expedition ship specifically for the world’s remote locales. Innovations include state-of-the-art fin stabilizers, an ice-strengthened Polar Class hull, U-tank stabilizers which decrease rolling by 50% and an integrated bow that creates a longer waterline.

The ship also features The Hanger, a newly designed in-ship marina which makes embarking and debarking excursion crafts much easier along with FerryBox, a set of instruments continuously collecting and displaying data on water quality, oxygen content, plankton composition and more. The Science Lab, developed in partnership with the University of Cambridge and Akvaplan-Niva, is equipped with wet and dry laboratory facilities, a sample processing area, fume cupboard, freezer and cool storage, comprehensive microscope optics and extensive bench space for analysis-specific instruments. Guests have supervised access to The Science Lab, which is located in a glass-enclosed mezzanine above The Hangar.

The 2021 Travel Resumes Tour 2.0

In spite of the pandemic purgatory of 2020 periodically rearing its ugly head again, cruising has resumed, albeit in a somewhat revamped style. Each month that goes by finds new ships being launched, older vessels being redeployed and destinations opening their doors to those of us eager to jump through the hoops of testing, vaccination and ever changing travel regulations.

In my year end summary of 2020 I wrote that 2021 showed a glimmer of hope and believe me when I say it fulfilled its promise. With reams of the required forms filled out, flimsy dog eared vaccination card in hand and 35 COVID tests under my belt (nose actually), I was determined in 2021 to make up for lost travel time. If you love getting away, I hope that my experiences will stoke the flames of your travel wanderlust.

….and we’re off…

We kicked the year into gear with a spring fling searching for that lost shaker of salt at the recently opened Margaritaville Resort on the Riviera Maya in Mexico. With tequila flowing through my veins and a burrito or two in my belly, I jumped on a cross country flight to Cabo San Lucas for a stay at the trendy The Cape. If 2022 finds you looking for something close to home and spiced with a touch of international flavor, a trip south of the border is an easy choice.

Hangin’ With Saints and Virgins

Wading into the waters of the Caribbean, three trips to the US Virgin Islands required a simple negative COVID test result and filling out a health declaration form that would prompt a semi automated online ‘permission to enter’ response. St.Thomas, St. Croix and St. John are always fun get-aways to America’s Caribbean and the return journeys did not disappoint. If you prefer a little more international culture, a visit to the two nation island of St. Maarten (France and Holland) is a fantastic alternative.

Europe Open For Business

With Greece announcing that they were opening its borders, we ignited our travel engines and jumped at the chance to be among the first guests aboard the Celebrity Apex in June. With a full capacity of over 3,000, this initial cruise had only 320 guests! That privilege has long since left the station but the ship is a beauty regardless of how many are onboard.

Hopping off in Athens, we took a short flight to Dubrovnik to sail the islands of Croatia with Seadream Yacht Club. If you like the intimate feel of smaller ships, it’s hard to beat their all inclusive style of cruising. Disembarkation in Venice was bittersweet but the taste of Italy was never better with a three day food fest in Emilia Romagna. The region’s supercharged wine shared the spotlight with the prosciutto and parmesan of Parma, the balsamic vinegar of Modena and mortadella in Bologna. Foodies will relish every minute spent in this gastronomic region of Italy. 

With our beloved Casa Anatra having been off limits for over a year, getting back to the house and our friends in Castilenti was pure joy. If you ever want to retreat into real Italy this is the place.

I can’t explain why I’d never been to Malta but with it now open I found a way to squeeze in three days that won’t be my last. History, weather, food and people make this a great place to experience as a cruise port or as a stand-alone destination.

With a short flight to Budapest we boarded the AmaMagna for a waltz on the Blue Danube. A river cruise is the perfect way to escape crowded cities and travel back country Europe. AmaWaterways offers river voyages on a number of European rivers featuring the all inclusive benefits of river cruising.

A return to Iceland was inevitable when news hit the wire about Crystal Cruises’ foray into expedition cruising. Imagining the brand’s reputation of luxury blended with a circumnavigation of Iceland made it a no brainer. The Crystal Endeavor is currently in Antarctica and may very well be on our radar for a return January adventure.

See You In September

With a brief regroup at home in August, and a bit of laundry we hit the road to Spain in September. Spinning the wheel of travel, Palma de Mallorca came up as a jackpot win with a stay at the luxurious Castell Son Claret hotel, a secluded estate tucked away in the UNESCO protected La Tramuntana Mountains. Combining that with a stay in Barcelona was the perfect prelude to a Mediterranean cruise of nostalgia with our Costa friends aboard the relatively new Costa Smeralda.

A fortunate encore trip back to Athens found its way into the schedule to board the Elysium, a yacht styled cruise by Elixir Boutique Cruises. This is a new venture that explores the less visited bastions of beauty in the Greek islands. We would love to have stayed for another week but we had scheduled a Mexican Riviera cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line celebrating the restart of the Norwegian Bliss. Cruising out of Los Angeles to Puerta Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo has never been better served than with this floating beauty.

Three nights back home to do a wardrobe change and we were off to Dubai. If there is any place to finish out a fabulous year of travel, it is without question this outpost of extravagance. Attending the gala naming ceremony of the MSC Virtuosa followed by a weeklong cruise of the United Arab Emirates sets the stage for the greatest show on earth, EXPO 2020. If you have never attended a Worlds Fair, this may be the best one ever, but it will end on March 31, 2022 so don’t put it off.

Gorging yourself on life needn’t be a cause for guilt. 3-Day Cruise on the Brand New Disney Wish 

Disney Cruise Line is newer than most, but boy do they know how to build a ship! We haven’t been on board Disney Wish yet as it’s still being built at Meyer Werft Shipyard in Germany, but from what we’ve seen, this ship is going to be a ton of fun. Leaving from Port Canaveral on Friday, December 30, 2022, the ship will sail to Nassau in the Bahamas as well as Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island resort.

At approximately 144,000 gross tons and 1,250 guest staterooms, the ship will be slightly larger than the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy and will feature Disney character Rapunzul as the stern art. In a press release just this past month, Disney announced that the ship will feature two brand-new theatrical productions; a Broadway-style take on Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “The Little Mermaid” and an embarkation day celebration helmed by Captain Minnie, Goofy and an all-star cast of Disney and Pixar characters. 

One of the coolest new features of Disney Wish has to be the AquaMouse attraction which takes guests on a magical waterslide adventure with its own unique storyline called Scuba Scramble. The 700+ foot slide is located on the top deck of the ship and features a number of special effects. There’s also a new Toy Story splash zone for families with young children.

Royal Caribbean Returns to Port of Baltimore

The Port of Baltimore must have felt pretty left out when cruise ship ports around the country started operating again this past year. But after months of waiting, the Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore is welcoming back Royal Caribbean Cruise Line for their first cruise from Maryland since the cruise industry-wide, COVID-19 pause in operations ended earlier this year. Enchantment of the Seas will set sail today on an 8-night holiday cruise to the Bahamas. 

“The return of Royal Caribbean to the Port of Baltimore is great way to celebrate the holiday season!” said Maryland Port Administration Executive Director William P. Doyle. “People love to cruise from Baltimore for so many reasons starting with our location.  Our cruise terminal is directly off Interstate 95 and BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport is only 15 minutes away.  We’re located right alongside Baltimore’s world-famous Inner Harbor, as well as Federal Hill, Fort McHenry, and Fells Point with plenty of sightseeing, dining, and shopping options. Royal Caribbean has been sailing from Port of Baltimore since 2004 as its close in proximity major cities along the East coast. The cruise line will offer the following cruises from the city moving forward:

Belly Up to the Bars on Odyssey of the Seas

As the saying goes, “it’s five o’clock somewhere,” and on Royal Caribbean’s newest Quantum-class ship, Odyssey of the Seas, that is the truth. No matter what time your watch says, happy hour begins when you are ready for your first cocktail. There is always a bar open with a smiling bartender happy to serve you a tropical drink.

In a quest to find the best drink onboard this 5,510 passenger ship, I set out to taste all of the featured cocktails at all of the bars. A daunting task to complete in the span of fewer than 48 hours, but someone had to do it, right? Along with my guest and Porthole Cruise and Travel’s own Evan Gove, we bellied up to multiple bars, and this is what we found:

By unanimous consensus, the number one cocktail guests must-try is the Painkiller. Although it is part of the base fleet menu, which is available at every bar, sip snd savor this classic drink with its Royal Caribbean twist at Lime & Coconut, an outdoor bar found spread out between decks 14 and 15.

You might be tempted to try their signature cocktail as well which is aptly named the Lime & Coconut. Made with Malibu Coconut Rum, coconut milk, coconut syrup, guava syrup, and lime juice, it was cold and creamy, but we found it a bit too sweet for our liking. However, the pineapple keepsake bucket makes a nice souvenir.

Number one on the list for making new friends is the swim-up bar on the shores of Royal Caribbean’s private island Coco Cay. With room for only 26 guests on this flotilla, everyone gets friendly with one another pretty quickly. And while you might find yourself buying a round of shots for your new buddies at the bar, a frosty beer while catching rays is the best way to go here.

Best Bar for Live Music

The best bar for live music is the Crown and Compass Pub. While listening to the guitar player croon acoustic versions of your favorite songs, have a Dublin Iced Tea. This exciting concoction tastes like a refreshing soda with Guinness overtone while their signature drink, the Boston Ice Tea Party, is high octane and loaded with various elixirs.

Alternatively, for loud live music, try the Music Hall. A concert-style venue where you will find rock n’ roll cover bands belting out the best songs from the past. Here order their signature drink, the Ice Ice Baby, which is heavy on the pineapple with just a tiny bit of fizz.

Strongest Cocktail

Playmakers, the sprawling sports bar in the 16th deck overlooking the massive multi-use SeaPlex®, has the most potent cocktail on the ship. Try the Knockout Punch, which should be renamed the “Knock-You-Out-Punch” or better yet, “The Mike Tyson” because the float of dark rum on top is a stinger!

Most Underrated Bar

The Solarium at the front of the boat on deck 14 is a hidden gem. This adult-only spot is where you will find the Sunshine Bar. Try the very colorful and sweet blue Curaçao Cosmo with a maraschino cherry at the bottom. It was described as “surprisingly coconut-y, with a hint of orange on the front of the palette.”

Not only does the new Giovanni’s℠ Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar have fantastic hand-tossed pizzas, but their house Chianti is just $6/glass. If you are not looking for a bargain, peruse their wine list, which features 50 wines by the glass!

Best Classic Cocktail 

The Schooner Bar, a nautically themed lounge, has nightly live entertainment. Their featured drink, a Rum Old Fashioned, is made with coconut syrup, giving it a tropical twist. Ask the bartender about their other Old Fashioneds as well. There are five different kinds on their menu.

Drink Packages on Odyssey of the Seas 

While it is not high-end mixology, in general, the cocktails on the Odyssey of the Seas are pretty good. Whether you choose a beverage package or pay for your drinks à la carte, cruisers will find a great selection of mixed drinks infused with Caribbean flavors.
