Catching Up with USVI Tourism Commissioner Joseph Boschulte

by Porthole Cruise and Travel May 5, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

One of the most famous regions in all of cruising is taking charge of their tourism recovery and things are looking bright for the future!

Joseph Boschulte, Commissioner of Tourism for the U.S. Virgin Islands, joined Porthole Cruise Magazine founder and Editor-in-Chief Bill Panoff at Seatrade Cruise Global to talk about the islands of St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix and how the return of cruising is going to help the islands in their post-COVID economic recovery.

Watch the full interview with Commissioner of Tourism for the U.S. Virgin Islands Joseph Boschulte below!

2021 saw a boom in air travel to the islands and the hope is that with cruise ships slowly reaching 100% occupancy, the cruise boom is imminent.

“[Tourism] is looking really really incredible for the upcoming year. We used to be very seasonal from a destination standpoint and our outlook for the summer is incredible,” Boschulte said. So there’s no drop off from the winter season into the summer season. It’s a steady flow so we’re grateful for that.”

Following the departure of former PortMiami Director Juan Kuryla, longtime employee Hydi Webb was the natural choice to take over. A port employee since 1992, Webb was named deputy port director in 2018 and was the interim port director prior to assuming her new position.

Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine Editor-in-Chief Bill Panoff had the opportunity to catch up with her at Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami last week and she filled us in on what her role will entail, a rundown of the new terminals and what PortMiami has in store for the future of cruising from The Magic City!

Check out the interview with Hydi Webb below and stay tuned for all the interviews from Seatrade Cruise Global!

PortMiami’s New Terminals

The port has seen incredible expansion over the past few years with new terminals opening for Norwegian Cruise Line, Virgin Voyages, and another one the way for MSC Cruises’ new LNG-ships like MSC Seashore.

Once completed, the MSC terminal be able to handle disembarkation and embarkation for three ships every day. Last year the port also worked with Mayor of Miami-Dade County Daniella Levine Cava to bring shore power to ships when they dock in port, which can be up to 9 ships per day.

Day @ Sea: MSC Seashore

by Jason Leppert May 3, 2022
written by Jason Leppert

MSC Seashore may be the newest addition to MSC Cruises’ fleet, but the ship’s story actually began in 2013 when Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri presented a concept design called Project Mille. The prototype featured a narrow superstructure balanced uniformly across its length, including a more centrally located engine room and exhaust stack. By redistributing heavier items such as spas and pools to lower decks, the upper levels could reach greater heights (and thus additional decks) without minimizing overall stability — itself quite an innovation.

The following year, MSC placed an order with Fincantieri to build the Seaside-class — starting with the eponymous MSC Seaside — seemingly based on Mille, at least unofficially. (Gearheads keeping track might also recognize that Norwegian Cruise Line’s upcoming Norwegian Prima and Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady and their respective sister ships appear to share a similar tall, narrow platform, albeit with several architectural differences.)

Then in 2017, after being built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, MSC Seaside launched with its promised bold profile and unique layout. Purposefully reminiscent of one of Miami’s contemporary condominium towers, the line’s first vessel dedicated to the North American market was a standout when docked at its initial Floridian homeport.

“The Ship That Follows the Sun”

Seaside was touted by MSC as an outward-facing ship focused on ocean views and saturated with deck space for sunbathing. But that wasn’t the only new element.

One of the main pools was relocated, as Mille prescribed, from its traditional high perch to the lower promenade deck. A divided buffet evenly distributed crowds — The Marketplace Buffet, uniquely situated on Deck 8, drew attention to the Waterfront Boardwalk, while a secondary Biscayne Bay Restaurant & Buffet resided on Deck 16.

The boardwalk was terraced at the stern, with the aft South Beach Pool down a level and the ship’s arcade, virtual reality simulators (formula one and interactive XD cinema), bowling alley, and billiards installed just inside.

The room freed up back on Deck 16 was then reserved for Seaside’s specialty restaurants. Butcher’s Cut, Ocean Cay Restaurant, and the freshly revealed Asian Market Kitchen by Roy Yamaguchi (consisting of sushi, teppanyaki, and fusion elements) were nestled between the public upper buffet and private MSC Yacht Club. While promenade venues and other decks successfully emphasized flow, the placement of divided eateries up top resulted in an uncharacteristic cul-de-sac of food with little means to easily pass through.

The Emergence of EVO

Of course, as each new ship joins a class, changes are likely — but when sister ship MSC Seaview came online a year later in 2018, the two shared identical deck plans. It wasn’t until the Seaside-class transformed into the Seaside EVO-class — the first of which is the 2021-launched MSC Seashore — that significant additions, omissions, and reconfigurations were made. The newest of MSC’s “Sea” ships greatly expands and improves the original design.

Specification-wise, EVO is larger in length and capacity, increasing from 153,516 gross tons and 5,079 guests to 169,400 tons and 5,632 passengers.

She Sells “Sea” Ships by the Seashore

Unlike Seaside and Seaview, racing zip lines aren’t featured on Seashore, but a sports court, trio of waterslides, Adventure Trail ropes course, and aqua park still crown this latest ship. Adjacent to the waterpark are the extensive kids, tweens, and teens clubs of Doremiland, now placed towards the front. The Hall of Games (arcade and simulators) has relocated to its side, minus the bowling this time around.

The result is a perfectly contiguous arrangement of youth (and young-at-heart) activities that stretches to the forward, now double-decker Jungle Pool Lounge — shifted down a level — and aft Long Island Pool — which has been pushed up a deck to accommodate the consolidated Marketplace Buffet & Restaurant below. This single self-service dining room has been enlarged and placed on the same level as

the Bridge of Sighs glass-floored catwalk for cantilevered views over the stern — conveniently lubricated, as it were, by the nearby Sky Bar.

A Ship Within a Ship

Meanwhile, Seashore’s MSC Yacht Club is mostly unaltered since Seaside. The exclusive observation lounge and restaurant remain stacked on top of each other at the scenic front of the ship. But, the elongated private pool deck and outdoor bar and grill have been moved up a level to add more high-end suites in between.

Down on Deck 8 (and again enhancing passenger flow), the Waterfront Promenade and inviting Infinity Pool are now on the same level without interruption. What’s missing is a second buffet, in favor of the Chef’s Court collection of specialty dining. The line’s signature steakhouse and seafood restaurant have been repeated, but celebrity chef Yamaguchi’s eateries have been replaced with Kaito Teppanyaki and Kaito Sushi Bar, complete with a cool, meandering dish conveyor. The court’s attached bar has been expanded into two venues, one each for cocktails and wine, and the streamlined layout eliminates any previous roadblocks.

Just in front, flanking the atrium and its Swarovski crystal-adorned stairs, Bistro La Boheme has been swapped out for HOLA! Tacos & Cantina. Farther forward, a pool room has been tacked on to the Sports Bar to reintroduce billiards. The presence of Uptown Lounge behind the specialty restaurants partially makes up for the loss of the previous Haven Lounge on Deck 7, as does the floor’s newly unveiled Le Cabaret Rouge. The two-level entertainment venue also acts as an aft-facing observation lounge and a welcome public equivalent to the MSC Yacht Club’s private lounge.

Time to Say Goodbye

Entirely gone on Seashore, however, is the fun automotive-themed Garage Club and adjacent bowling alley. In their place are the additional 5th Avenue Restaurant (main dining) and Manhattan Restaurant (exclusive to Aurea guests). Thankfully also along for the ride are Venchi 1878’s tempting chocolate and gelato bars.

Finally, ship nerds who make a hobby of thoroughly comparing deck plans and scouring their every detail will note the photo gallery on Deck 5 is punctuated with a new kiosk highlighting the line’s philanthropic MSC Foundation. A final note, that is, other than the relocation of the business center from Deck 6 to Deck 8.

Through all these changes, big and small, MSC Seashore quite simply shows an exemplary evolution from MSC Seaside and MSC Seaview before her. She currently serves as a fine flagship for MSC Cruises’ U.S.-based fleet, currently departing from Miami.

Norwegian Epic Cruise Ship Review

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Epic Difference

by Steve Leland May 2, 2022
written by Steve Leland

Whoever said that all cruise ships are created equal should be subject to a public flogging on deck. Sure they all have entertainment, food and more food, activities galore and they cruise to the four corners of the globe. But how they execute these amenities is what distinguishes one brand from another. Some place emphasis on luxury, others on food while some focus on exotic itineraries. Each to their own, there’s something for every taste.

With four Norwegian Cruise Line cruises under my belt (literally), I’ve taken notice of distinct characteristics that set them apart from others. Our most recent cruise on the Norwegian Epic out of Rome confirmed my observations and although the one time flag bearer for the brand may have been upstaged by newer ships like the Bliss and the upcoming Prima, she still retains the out of the box thinking that has made NCL one of the industry leaders.

Norwegian Epic
Scene from Priscilla, Queen of the Desert | Photo: Norwegian Cruise Line

Now That’s Entertainment

NCL goes far beyond basic with expertly produced Broadway shows such as Jersey Boys and Kinky Boots. Last November I was blown away by the production of Six aboard the Norwegian Bliss and commented at the time that it was the best show I’d ever seen aboard a cruise ship. Here on the Epic, that comment is now moot as we were completely enthralled with a performance of the award winning show Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and then to top them all their production of Burn The Floor demonstrated the emphasis NCL places on entertainment quality.

It’s not just the big production shows that grab your attention as super talented special acts entertain each night. Take in a American Idol finalist one night, an amazing vocal quartet another and travel back to the sixties for a special concert by a mop haired Beatles cover band.

Think your night is over? Not even close! As you wander out of the Epic Theater, stroll the deck and duck into the Spiegil Tent, a two level showroom featuring a juggler one night, an escape room experience another and musicians on others.  Twenty steps along enter the Headliner Comedy Club that puts the spotlight on comedy acts, a magician or a dueling pianos act that will offer a Howling At The Moon opportunity.  Enough?  Oh no!  Keep it up my friend, there’s the atrium area with non stop TV game shows, Shakers with musical entertainment and the Cavern Club with performances by the Fab Four harkening back to the days of the British Invasion. The Bliss Lounge is a trendy nightclub that keeps the action going till the wee hours.

Norwegian Epic
Dining in Cagney's | Photo: Norwegian Cruise Line

So Look, Here’s The Meal

Variety may be the spice of life but it is also a key ingredient in a sure fire recipe for enhanced dining experiences aboard an NCL ship. Dine in the full service Manhattan Room with a live band and even a dance floor to bust out some moves between courses. Maybe the Asian influenced Shanghai’s Noodle Bar or O’Sheehan’s Bar and Grill serving daily specials for breakfast lunch and dinner in a pub like setting might be your cup of tea. The Garden Cafe is a buffet venue with themed specials or the Great Outdoor for lunch by the pool. These are all complimentary alternatives but if you want to experience extravagant culinary prowess look no further than the ship’s specialty restaurants.

Le Bistro for dining with French flair, Cagney’s Steakhouse for the carnivores among you, Moderno serves up an authentic churrascaria experience and Teppanyaki proffers table side entertainment as your personal chef dices, slices and cooks up your meal. La Cucina brings la dolce vita to Italian food lovers and Yakitori for fresh a la carte sushi.

Norwegian Epic

Rules Are For Land

NCL has demonstrated a propensity for tweaking cruise norms aboard the Epic. Speaking of out of the box thinking, how about curved walls in the staterooms that eliminate that boxed in feeling. How about an actual two lane bowling alley, pool tables and arcade games adjacent to O’Sheenhan’s? Summon up your inner child with triple water flume slides and a rock climbing wall. Wanna just chill out?  Shiver up for an ice cold drink in the ship’s Ice Bar. It was NCL that came up with a go kart track on the NCL Bliss and the soon to be launched Prima will feature pools that are on the side of the ship. The Haven is designed as an upscale ship within a ship enclave for the cruiser that prefers intimate personalized accommodations.

RELATED: NEW NCL SHIP NORWEGIAN VIVA COMING IN 2023

It’s been a fantastic springtime voyage in the Mediterranean with a new port every day. I’d often mentioned that I’m not a big ship person but the last two cruises with NCL have flipped me.  I enjoy all of the amenities that these larger ships offer and especially those that take cruise engagement to new levels. I need to get back home and get my schedule primed for the new Norwegian Prima launch in September. Now that should be a real epic event!

Seatrade Interview with Gus Antorcha, Holland America Line President

by Porthole Cruise and Travel April 28, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

The cruise industry came together in Miami Beach this week for the annual Seatrade Cruise Global convention and Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine Founder and Editor-in-Chief Bill Panoff was on hand to speak with the most important names in the industry.

Bill caught up with Holland America Line President Gus Antorcha to talk about the restart of the cruise line’s full fleet, the start to Alaska season and how the cruise line is helping the people of Ukraine on board their ship Volendam. Earlier this month, Holland America Line chartered the ship in coordination with the city of Rotterdam provide a temporary home for approximately 1,500 Ukrainians, part of a larger commitment from the Netherlands to accommodate 50,000 people who fled the war in their homeland.

“We are in a unique position to accommodate the immediate need for food and housing, so we felt it was very important to work with the City of Rotterdam and charter this ship,” said Antorcha at the time of the announcement. “Our company was founded in Rotterdam around the mission of helping immigrants find a better life. So today we’re proud to be a small part of a similar mission for Ukrainians who have tragically been displaced.”

Taking In The Avalon View

by Steve Leland April 28, 2022
written by Steve Leland

Opening new gifts is always a thrill and being on hand as a new ship is unwrapped is as exciting as it gets. From our plane’s touchdown in Vienna, Austria to takeoff in Budapest, Hungary the four day christening event of the new Avalon View from Avalon Waterways was cause for celebration.

With TV celebrity Meredith Vieira on hand to serve as godmother, the vessel was formally revealed in a gala pier-side celebration in Bratislava, Slovakia. After two years of anticipation, with free flowing champagne in our hands and the traditional bottle smash on her bow, Avalon View finally waltzed her way onto the Blue Danube.

The first vision of the vessel in Vienna is striking with wall to wall, floor to ceiling windows proffering unobstructed sight lines that lend credence to the vessel’s name. The sleek exterior aesthetic extends into the contemporary design of the entrance atrium and the exceptionally spacious Panorama Lounge with a blue, beige and silver color scheme painting a warm and trendy ambiance.

There are several benefits in river cruising but the concept of included shore excursions ranks high on the list. Avalon has committed to a diverse and all encompassing shore excursion program with their Active & Discovery initiative that offers every style of shore side engagement. An Avalon Adventure Host is on hand to assist with arranging excursions, bikes and active gear and the small gymnasium is available for keeping that figure in control while the upper deck features a walking track, hot tub and the alfresco Sky Grill for outdoor leisure time.

Vienna serves as an introduction to this active lifestyle concept with an E-bike excursion through the streets of Vienna or an ubiquitous carriage ride, discovering the beautiful buildings that line the avenues and boulevards of the city. Offering more than just sightseeing, guests are invited into the famed Spanish Riding School plus an exclusive walk through the stable area.

Sailing eastward, arrival in Bratislava, Slovakia signals an opportunity to enjoy hiking through hillside vineyards, sampling the fruit of the vine at its source or once again E-bike tours that cater to the desire for energetic exploration.  If castles are more to your liking a gentle stroll through the city explores the historic old town and its captivating sights. This fascinating inaugural cruise finished up with a curtain call visit to Budapest, Hungary.

In addition to the shorter 4 day sampler-type cruises, the ship also offers longer 6 day itineraries that include visits to the Benedictine Abbey In Melk and the cruising the scenic Wachau Valley. Extended time and overnight stays in ports of call permit a wider array of excursion opportunities and with more excursion options there are fewer people on each tour.

Avalon Waterways
Royal Suite | Photo: Avalon Waterways

There’s Nothing Suiter

As the View plies the scenic waterways of Europe, gazing out through your personal window to the world becomes an inherent component of the cruise. To enhance this unique experience, Avalon has turned room design on its heels with beds that actually face an 11 foot wide, floor to ceiling retractable window. Imagine lying in bed enjoying a cappuccino as quaint villages vineyards and historic cities pass by. These two hundred square feet Panorama Suites are the perfect accommodation for a well deserved river holiday.

RELATED: TRY ME A RIVER – ON AVALON VISIONARY

The vessel’s main restaurant is cleverly placed at water level for a unique visionary perspective as the vessel is underway. Regardless of where you are seated you can watch as the vessel cruises the river or passes through the fascinating locks that make the river navigable. Another opportunity to witness the sights is a comfortable lounge at the aft of the ship with a coffee machine, juice and snacks available 24 hours a day.

The appeal of the Danube is undeniable and cruising the waterway aboard a vessel like this embellishes the cruise experience. There’s a first time for everything and riding the waves with Avalon for the first time, certainly won’t be the last. The small ship, big experience theme is carried out flawlessly and with eyes wide open, the View is clearly an asset the respected brand can be proud of.

Returning to “Big Ship” Cruising with Majestic Princess

by Peter Knego April 28, 2022
written by Peter Knego

After almost two years, my first opportunity to sail in a big cruise ship again came this past August aboard Princess Cruises’ 2017-built Majestic Princess. With much anticipation and an optimistic outlook, I joined the 3,560-passenger, 143,700-gross-ton ship on a 7-night “Return To Alaska” sailing from Seattle that called at the familiar haunts of Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and Glacier Bay.

The first new COVID-era caveat was getting a rapid antigen test, which in addition to proof of full vaccination at least two weeks prior to departure, is currently required within two days of boarding the ship (the line also now accepts negative PCR tests within two days). Once on the ship, where the capacity was a manageable 2,100 guests, the experience was much as it always has been, with some newly added protocols that included blocked seats in certain lounges and additional sanitizing stations in dining venues and public areas. Masks were also required indoors, except when eating or drinking, and for the most part, fellow guests respected the rules.

While this was my first sailing aboard Majestic Princess, my prior cruises on three of her nearly identical sister ships, the Royal, Regal, and Sky Princesses, gave me a good idea about the layout and overall facilities on board. Majestic has the distinguishing bells and whistles of those fellow Royal-class ships, including the glass bottomed Sea Walk and SeaView Bar, both of which project over the side of the ship and offer spine-tingling views 128 feet above the ocean. She also has the Fountain Pool, where there is an almost nightly water-and-light show and the Princess Live, a combination television studio and lounge that is a popular venue for quizzes and game shows.

Like most of the ships in the Princess fleet, Majestic Princess uses Medallion-class technology, which used to be a bit of a conundrum for me since I’m not very shrewd with my iPhone or electronics in general. This time around, perhaps due to improved satellite Wi-Fi — or maybe I’ve just gotten used to it — the Medallion, which has replaced the traditional Princess cruise ID card, functioned flawlessly.

Instead of wearing it around my neck, I sported the disc-shaped pod on a blue watch band made of recycled plastic bottles that is available for purchase on board and enjoyed swiping it at the gangway for swift and easy boarding. I also like how it popped the lock “hands free” on our stateroom door when approaching. I even used its drone-like function to reunite with my traveling companion who went out a different exit from the Princess Theater after a packed show one night. Other more savvy fellow cruisers were using it to order things like a cappuccino and a slice of pizza for delivery in some remote top-deck area, instead of making the long trek down into the heart of the ship to do it in the flesh.

Majestic Princess; a Special Ship

As a fan of ships that have their own style and personality, probably what I most enjoyed about Majestic Princess (which also bears a Chinese name that translates to “Grand World” or ”Grand Spirit”) is how she differs from her sisters. Since she was actually built for the Chinese cruise market, there is an Asiatic flair to her color schemes and artworks, including a huge Buddhist-inspired mural called Wishing Wall with wooden flaps that open to reveal boards where guests can write down their wishes. Even the space that artwork occupies, an enclosed

observation lounge with cabana seating called the Hollywood Conservatory, is unique to Majestic Princess. On the other ships, it is the Sanctuary, a retreat where guests actually pay a fee for a half or full day of indulgence with ambient music, spa services, and appeasements like Evian mists.

A Perfectly Provençal Post River Cruise Stay

by Dana Freeman April 27, 2022
written by Dana Freeman

Whether you are river cruising on the Rhône, Saône, or the Seine this summer, if you find yourself wishing to extend your stay in France (and why wouldn’t you?), there is no better place in Provence to spend a few extra days than at the Coquillade Provence Resort & Spa. This five-star gem is less than an hour by car from Avignon, where my AmaWaterways Colors of Provence river cruise disembarked.

France

Located on a 100-acre estate in the heart of France’s Luberon Valley, the Coquillade is surrounded by sprawling vineyards, olive groves, and fields of lavender. As you drive up the long, winding driveway lined with cypress trees, you feel as though you are arriving home. Designed to feel that way on purpose, their 63 rooms and suites are spread out among several French country houses, known as bastides, each with a private terrace, balcony, or gardens overlooking the hills of Provence. The buildings are intertwined by meticulously landscaped paths making the property feel like a small Provencal hamlet rather than simply a hotel.

Coquillade offers its 120 guests an abundance of things to do for a small property. So whether you are a connoisseur of food and wine, a cycling enthusiast, or enjoy the outdoors, you will find little reason to leave the property.

There are two large heated outdoor pools and an additional one inside the spa. Access to the spa and wellness center is included for all guests. Take advantage of the hot and cold-water therapy circuit with a sauna, steam room, ice room, plunge pools, and an immersion rain shower. For ultimate relaxation, have a seat in one of the outdoor whirlpool tubs overlooking the vineyard.

A true sports destination, Coquillade is home to the BMC Cycling center, which rents racing bikes, mountain bikes, and e-bikes. So take them out for a ride on your own or schedule and biking excursion with a guide. There is also a bike shop with all the gear and accessories.

France

A luxury Relais and Chateaux property in the South of France wouldn’t be complete without a winery. Aureto produces 150,000 bottles of red, white, and rose wine annually. They are all served in the restaurants, but you can do a tour and tasting at the winery and purchase a few to take home.

The estate includes three restaurants and a bar, all serving different cuisine, so you’ll never tire of the food. My favorite is Cipressa which serves authentic Sicilian cuisine. Their daily antipasti buffet with grilled vegetables, olives, meats, and cheeses is enough for a meal, but don’t miss their wood-fired pizzas and homemade pasta. If you are looking for something a bit spicier, try the Thai food in the bar.

River Cruise

Should you feel you need to leave the hotel to explore the property’s region, Coquillade has a Smart Car available to borrow. We got behind the wheel with the top down for a few hours to check out surrounding towns like L’Isle-Sur-la-Sorgue and Gorges.

Coquillade Provence Resort and Spa is an idyllic escape that is truly the experience of a lifetime.

Vibrance and Color: St. Thomas Artist Prea Bhandari

by Porthole Cruise and Travel April 26, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Growing up in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Prea Bhandari always knew her life was destined for the creative. This young artist is leaving her mark on the Caribbean art community, particularly on her home island of St. Thomas, one magnificent acrylic at a time.

Recognized for her ability early on in life, Bhandari’s art draws on the surrounding scenery of the island using vibrant colors and an abstract style. Her debut solo exhibition “Euphoria” premiered in downtown Charlotte Amalie in St. Thomas in December 2021.

Prior to graduating from the Antilles School in 2015, Bhandari provided illustrations for the children’s book  “See the Virgin Islands March,” and she also participated in art exhibitions around the island. She then attended attended Tufts University and School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Massachusetts, studying in their joint dual-degree program with a focus in Communications and Fine Art.

In a search for inspiration, she move abroad to Europe to pursue another interest of her interests; fashion. After spending time in Paris, Milan and London studying Fashion Design, Marketing, and Business, Bhandari returned to St. Thomas following the COVID-10 pandemic and began painting once again after a three-year break.

The pandemic may have dried up tourism to the island temporarily, but it was an opportunity for Bhandari to experiment with new mediums and styles. From this experimentation blossomed her latest art collection “Preastoric Art,” which features the use of recycled materials to create modern portraits of human subjects.

You can follow Prea Bhandari on Instagram or visit her website to check out more of her art!

When it comes to hopping around the globe, there aren’t many who log more miles annually than Scott Eddy. A veteran travel aficionado with with a laundry list of countries under his belt and his own show on Lifetime TV called Video Globetrotter, Scott is also an accomplished cruiser, having previously joined Porthole Cruise  and Travel Magazine on a trip through the Caribbean in 2019 with Windstar Cruises.

Today, he joined Bill Panoff, editor-in-chief of Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine, for an Instagram live from the beautiful new Celebrity Beyond from Southhampton, England before it officially sets sail on its maiden voyage through Western Europe on 27th April, 2022.

Hers your first look at @CelebrityCruise new ship, the #CelebrityBeyond. Join myself and @CruiseControlBP at 2pm EST, we'll be doing an IG LIVE from the ship (well, Bill will be in Florida and I'll be on the ship lol). #LuxuryTravel #Cruise #Southampton #UK @CelebrityUK 🇬🇧 pic.twitter.com/7vmrTTZEDO

With Captain Kate McCue at the helm, Celebrity Beyond may look similar to her sister ships Edge and Apex, there are a few differences to point out. First and foremost, she’s longer, taller and has 179 more staterooms than previous Edge-class ships. The cruise line has also expanded The Retreat, the private area where suite guests enjoy a private two-story sundeck, lounge and a restaurant.

Five Faves: Earth Rules! Five reasons our planet is the best for cruising

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine April 22, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Today is Earth Day, when citizens of the world help further the environmental movement with events, celebrations, and, above all, education. As you take in all those valuable tips for making a difference where you live, you can rest assured that the cruise industry is continuing to look for better ways to do its part for the planet as well. After all, until space tourism takes off (which won’t happen, of course, until Isaac The Bartender joins the crew of The Love Rocket), this planet is the only one we have to cruise. Here are our five favorite reasons that cruising on Earth is simply the best!

The Water

Ian_Joughin_ PSC_APL_UWjakobshavn2013-5.jpg__1280x99999_q85_subsampling-2If Earth wanted to start a taunting chant that would put all other planets in their inferior places, that chant would go: H-2-O! H-2-O! No other known planet has surface liquid water, which is essential for supporting a cruise industry. And life. Europa, one of Jupiter’s many moons, may have more ocean-water than Earth, but it rests beneath an icy surface that some estimates have as being almost 12 miles thick. Not even George Clooney has an icebreaker that effective.

The Heat

Jupiter_Red_Spot-NASA_JPL_PIA01384Distance from the sun obviously plays a huge factor in each planet’s surface temperatures. Earth has the perfect combination of distance and a habitable atmosphere, (no matter how many lobster-like sunburns seem to say otherwise). Perhaps somewhere in the surface-less gases of Jupiter one may find the ultimate sweet spot where the atmospheric pressure provides an ideal temp: While the edges of the cloud cover reach a frigid -229 degrees Fahrenheit, the core sees highs hotter than the surface of the sun.

The Breeze

1200px-Antonio_Nicolo_Gasparo_Jacobsen_-_'Racing_Schooners'Another advantage of having water on which to cruise is the refreshing breeze that comes with it. And while Earth isn’t without examples of its winds stepping it up a notch or two, those instances are nothing like those seen on other planets. Saturn sees winds that are almost four times faster than the highest wind speeds ever recorded on Earth, while Neptune’s 1,300-mph wind speeds are the strongest in our solar system.

The Destinations

Antique Maps of the World Double Hemisphere Polar Map Gerard Valk c 1686Perhaps there’s a planet in our solar system with an undiscovered stretch of beauty that rivals that of the Mediterranean. Maybe our Alaskan adventures can’t compare to the icy offerings found further out from the sun. And who knows — somewhere out there, there may even be a better jerk chicken hut than the one we stumbled upon in Ocho Rios. Until we know for sure, we’ll just have to settle with what we’ve got.

The Moon

MoonAtmosphere_CREDIT_NASA_JSC-iss028e020072Sitting on the stern, watching the moon illuminate your ship’s wake, is this cruiser’s favorite pre-midnight buffet activity. On Mercury and Venus, there’d be no moons to provide this spotlight; meanwhile, each of the other planets has at least two orbiting moons jockeying for this kind of attention. The moon, like the planet we live on, is the only one we’ve got — and we wouldn’t want it any other way.

by Porthole Cruise and Travel April 21, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

One of the top luxury adventure cruise lines has a new departure port for their journeys to Antarctica! Silversea Cruises announced today that the line’s three ice-class expedition ships—Silver Cloud, Silver Wind and Silver Explorer—will embark and disembark in Puerto Williams, Chile, for the 2022-2023 season.

There are several advantages to the new port, according to Silversea, including more convenient flight times, personalized service during an exclusive charter flight, and quicker transfers to the ship, and more.

“I extend my gratitude to the Chilean authorities and local stakeholders who have enabled us to unlock the most comfortable and convenient route to Antarctica for international travellers,” says Roberto Martinoli, Silversea’s President and CEO. “As the only cruise line currently offering Antarctica expeditions from Puerto Williams, we are immensely proud of this accomplishment, which is representative of our commitment to delivering truly unique experiences in this iconic destination.”

Cruising to Antarctica with Silversea

A Silversea Cruise itinerary to Antarctica includes a number of benefits to make things easier for guests. Some of which include:

  • An overnight stay in a five-star hotel in Santiago, with a welcome reception dinner and breakfast
  • A comfortable transfer to Santiago’s airport the following day, with a flight departing from a private airport terminal
  • An exclusive charter flight to Puerto Williams, fully escorted by a Silversea’s representative
  • An upgraded, personalized flight experience, including extra legroom, greater luggage allowance, and regionally inspired gourmet lunch
  • A quicker transfer to the ship in Puerto Williams
  • Upon disembarkation from the ship, a direct transfer to the airport and charter flight to Santiago for the onward journey

“Such innovations reflect Silversea’s destination leadership in Antarctica,” says Conrad Combrink, Silversea’s Senior Vice President of Expeditions, Turnaround Operations and Destination Management. “Puerto Williams is a magnificent gateway for accessing the natural treasures of Antarctica. As the only company currently operating a private charter flight between Santiago and Puerto Williams, Silversea can now offer guests an enhanced level of service and a more seamless connection as they journey to Antarctica in style. I thank the Chilean authorities and all involved stakeholders for their invaluable collaboration. This innovation has been many years in the making, and it is an incredibly proud moment to see our guests departing from Puerto Williams on three of our ultra-luxury ships.”

Embark with Cruise Saudi to Experience Saudi’s Breathtaking Beauty

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine April 21, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Saudi is an exciting destination with a rapidly expanding tourism industry. The country offers not only deserts, but an incredibly rich marine ecosystem, stunning untouched beaches and islands, including the Red Sea’s unique and spectacular coral reef, historical and cultural sites, combined with modern architecture and cities – and most importantly, a vibrant and hospitable culture.

Cruise Saudi is driving the development of a fully integrated world-class and sustainable local cruise industry, in line with the goals of Vision 2030 – the Saudi leadership’s transformation blueprint. The industry not only plays an integral role in Saudi’s economic diversity and social transformation but is also opening new gateways welcoming the world to come and experience Saudi, making it a must-visit destination on travel lists of cruise enthusiasts. The aim is to expand tourism in Saudi, by attracting 100 million visits by 2030, of which one million will be welcomed by Cruise Saudi by 2028; and one is for 10% of GDP coming from tourism.

Cruise Saudi

The country offers superior connectivity to the rest of the world – approximately 250 million people in Europe, Asia and Africa live within a three-hour flight from the Red Sea or Arabian Gulf. This puts Saudi in an ideal position to develop the Red Sea and Arabian Peninsula into the potential cruising hub, echoing the history of the region as a maritime hub.

In order to ensure a comfortable, seamless and memorable cruising experience for tourists as they set out to experience the wonders of Saudi by ship, Cruise Saudi works closely with local partners such as The Saudi Ports Authority (MAWANI) to develop ports around the country to enable cruising. Jeddah Islamic Port became home to Saudi’s first cruise passenger terminal in 2021, and both Yanbu and Dammam are now equipped with the infrastructure required to welcome cruise ships. Since its launch, just over a year ago, Cruise Saudi has welcomed ships from major international cruise lines such as MSC Cruises, Scenic Group, Silver Sea & Viking, enabling 50,000 passengers so far to experience Saudi by sea during the 2021/22 Summer and Winter Seasons.

Visiting Saudi offers tourists a chance to experience a diverse culture and varied landscape with a history that can be traced back to the earliest civilizations of Arabian culture. Hegra, located in AlUla – accessible to cruise passengers via Yanbu port – was the southern capital of the Nabataean civilization, who also built Petra (in Jordan), and was Saudi’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Yanbu, also known as the diving capital of Saudi, offers a thrilling and memorable diving experience in the spectacular coral reefs, buzzing with colorful fish and the mysterious old Iona shipwreck.

Jeddah
Photo: Cruise Saudi

Jeddah’s historical AlBalad district is also recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and embodies the unique Hijazi style architecture of the area. Strolling through the aisles of the old market, visitors’ senses will be heightened by the colorful artwork, oriental scents and local gastronomy, living a traditional Saudi trade experience.  Jeddah has an important maritime history as an international hub for merchant travelers transporting goods from around the world and is now the commercial center of Saudi. The city is a cultural crossroads and a vibrant hub combining heritage and modernity, where visitors can enjoy the historical and modern landmarks of the city, strolling down the waterfront corniche and taking time to admire the world’s tallest fountain.

This is the first time that any of Saudi’s six UNESCO World Heritage Sites have been featured on cruise itineraries, and Cruise Saudi is working with partners on the ground to activate more destinations and promote touristic activities all around Saudi. These include The Red Sea Development Company & Amaala, NEOM, Sharqiya Development Authority and the Royal Commission for AlUla.

Cruise Saudi’s partnerships – both local and international – have been integral to its multiple successes thus far. The company aims to bring together entities on to one platform to build a fully coordinated cruise industry in Saudi; from international cruise lines to shore excursion facilities and infrastructure to the airlift with national carrier SAUDIA.

Developing specialized human capital is crucial to operate a relatively new industry such as cruising and to offer guests a high-quality and memorable experience. To ensure the future workforce is equipped with the required skill set and practical experience, Cruise Saudi has launched a series of training programs and has more in the pipeline in addition to its goal of creating 50,000 direct and indirect jobs by 2035.

In collaboration with the Culinary Arts Commission, Cruise Saudi training programs include onboard training for local chefs as well as tour guides specialized in culinary arts. The company also works with the local travel industry on everything from educating travel agents to upskilling tour guides and operators to creating and showcasing a wide array of entertainment, nature and adventure offerings.

Cruise Saudi has been warmly welcomed by the global cruise and tourism industry, having attended events such as Seatrade Cruise Global, the World Travel Market and the WTTC Global Summit. Its achievements so far have also been recognized with Cruise Saudi placing as a finalist for Destination of the Year 2021 at the Seatrade Cruise Global Awards and winner of Best New Business Model at the Tourism Innovation Summit in 2021.

RELATED: Cruise Saudi Joins The World Travel & Tourism Council

In just over a year, Cruise Saudi has made a lot of progress. From developing ports around Saudi and welcoming international cruise lines to Saudi for the first time to operating both a Summer and Winter Season and welcoming local and international guests to experience Saudi by sea. There’s so much that Saudi has to offer in terms of its unique landscapes, oceans, cultural and historical wonders – and Cruise Saudi opens a new gateway for the world to come and explore.
