Celebrity Cruises Announces New 2023 Pacific Coast Cruises

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 13, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

California is once again open for cruising and as a result, we’re seeing more and more cruise lines scheduling future cruises along the Pacific coast! Celebrity Cruises announced today that they’ll position their ship Celebrity Eclipse in Los Angeles starting in September of 2023 for 6, 7, and 8-night cruises north and south along the coast.

“Our Pacific Coast itineraries are packed with iconic destinations, unique cultural experiences and Celebrity’s signature onboard luxury experiences,” said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, President and CEO of Celebrity Cruises. “There’s so much to experience on both the West Coast and on our beautiful Celebrity Eclipse, making it a vacation that offers something new and exciting every day of the journey.”

For those wary about traveling too far from home just yet, the ship calls on several American ports like San Diego, Santa Barbara, and San Francisco, California as well as Astoria, Oregon. When the ship cruises south along Mexico’s Baja Peninsula, calls include Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta.

The breakdown of each itinerary from Los Angeles is as follows:

  • 7-night Pacific Coastal sailings with calls on San Francisco, Santa Barbara and San Diego
  • An 8-night South-of-the-Border Mexican Riviera itinerary with calls on Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán, La Paz and Puerto Vallarta
  • A 6-night itinerary featuring an overnight stop in Cabo San Lucas, and a visit to San Diego
  • A 6-night repositioning cruise in December from Vancouver to Los Angeles with calls on Victoria, British Columbia; Astoria, Oregon; and an overnight in San Francisco

New Paint for Celebrity Eclipse

Launched in 2010, Celebrity Eclipse is the third of five Solstice-class ships built by the cruise line. While the ship was idle during the industry pause, Celebrity Cruises took the opportunity to give it a fresh coat of hull paint and former guests may not recognize her now! The ship is now the same navy blue found on the brand’s newer vessels like Edge and Apex.

Saudi Arabia Wants 100 Million Visitors by 2030

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 13, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

In January of 2020, the world first learned of Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia’s tourism initiative that hopes to bring in 100 million visitors by the year 2030. What many didn’t realize at the time was that cruising was set to be a large part of that plan. Thanks to the country’s proximity between the Red Sea and Persian Gulf, Saudi Arabia is uniquely positioned to become a major cruise and travel destination in the coming years and the organization behind the scenes, Cruise Saudi, is already making waves in the industry.

Cruise Saudi

Photo: Cruise Saudi

At Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami this past September, Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine Founder and Editor-in-Chief Bill Panoff met with Mark Robinson, the Chief Commercial and Operations Officer for Cruise Saudi to discuss how Saudi Arabia is poised to become an important factor in the cruise industry.

“Saudi Arabia now is focused on generating inbound business in tourism and 100 million people by 2030. So cruise becomes a huge part of this and it’s a great way for people to see the country as well. We’re developing five different ports and it’s part of the vision to grow the industry,” Robinson said.

MSC Cruises and Cruise Saudi

One of the most important partnerships in cruising these days is the one between MSC Cruises and Cruise Saudi. MSC is one of the fastest growing cruise lines and the two sides recently agreed on a five year deal for preferential berthing rights at the port of Jeddah for MSC Bellissima. Robinson was asked about how that partnership came to be.

“MSC is just one of our partners. We’re talking to various cruise lines, MSC and Scenic, Scenic brought the Scenic Eclipse this Summer as well so we’re working with mainstream brands and ultra-luxury brands as well. MSC based Bellisima there, and they’ve been sailing since July this year with all Saudi guests and we’ve sailed over 20,000 Saudis, creating a new market and then in the Winter, MSC Bellisima will be staying in the region for international guests as well,” Robinson said.

Cruising, Italian Style

by Steve Leland October 12, 2021
written by Steve Leland

Spending a day at sea is never wasted on me and sailing between Palma de Mallorca and Messina, Sicily on the Costa Smeralda provides the perfect opportunity for a ‘me/we’ day.

Let’s be upfront. I proudly declare that I am a spa addict. I’m not ashamed and with no intention of being cured I’m starting my day at sea with a visit to the onboard SOLEMIO Spa, operated by One Spa World, the leader in spas at sea.

Effective COVID-19 protocols have been implemented and by taking advantage of capacity restrictions it’s now possible to schedule and reserve the entire thermal suite exclusively for you and yours. Soak in the mineral enriched waters of the bubbling hydro pool, bask in the warmth of the sauna, chill out in the snow room and traverse a course of soothing shower treatments. Cap off the intimate seventy five minutes with inner reflection on a heated lounger.

Costa Smeralda

Photo: Steve Leland

Nothing defines ‘Cruising Italian Style’ better than a morning coffee, so temporarily tearing ourselves away from the spa we head for Cafe Vergnano, surrounded by the centerpiece multi-deck Colosseo theater. A long list of specialty coffees are available but true to the mission of authenticity we opt for high voltage caffeination with an espresso (actually two). With a slightly guilt ridden conscience we oblige the freshly baked pastries that are screaming for attention and go with a sugar coated Nutella bomba and flaky croissant.

The shops and casino are open and sea day social activities are everywhere but this day is a ‘me/we’ day. Mitigating the pastry intake (or so I tell myself) a 1 1/2 mile walk around the outdoor track plus 30 minutes in the gym on the elliptical absolves any hint of guilt. But striking back at willpower weakness, it’s lunchtime and Pummid’Oro is the venue du jour for a delicious Calabrese pizza and a mid day glass of Chianti.

On the return to the spa we explore The CODE Museum. I know what you’re thinking. “Wait…didn’t you say this was a day at sea?”  The CODE Museum is the first museum onboard a ship to grasp the infectious spirit of Italian design and fashion and displays a plethora of objects, furnishings and engineering accomplishments of noted Italians.

Back in the palace of pampering, SOLEMIO, I’m anxious to experience new avenues of indulgence. On previous cruises, I’ve been wrapped in seaweed, basted with mud masques and kneaded from top to bottom but this time I’ve scheduled an intriguing heated quartz bed massage treatment.

Laying it All On The Table

The massage table contains a six inch layer of heated quartz granules containing 84 minerals. Laying face down, semi-cocooned in the warm granules, my back is basted with hot oil and ‘my’ technician gently rolls a bamboo rod over the tight muscles of shoulders and back. It’s 20 minutes of ooh’s and ahh’s followed by rolling over and a repeat on the flip side. Seventy five minutes later I’m relaxed, refreshed and invigorated for the night ahead.

With daylight waning, a stop by the Campari Bar for an aperitif is deemed authentically appropriate. (It’s Cruising, Italian Style remember?) One of the 19 themed bars onboard, this classic bar overlooks the Colosseo theater. While the trend on new ships tends to focus on grandiose multi-deck atriums serving as a bar/gathering place, the Colosseo blends that aspect along with an in-the-round showroom featuring ongoing music and cabaret style acts.

Costa Smeralda

Photo: Steve Leland

Considering the decidedly international profile of Costa and assorted languages spoken onboard, entertainment focuses on visual presentations. Nightly shows in the San Remo theater are high energy and expertly choreographed programs. The Jazz Club Lounge features a trio of jazz musicians and an energized show band provides opportunities for dancing the night away in the

Of course visiting intriguing ports of call is an important part of cruising, but a day at sea is a great way to reflect on things that are important, namely yourself!

Singapore Opens For Vaccinated Americans, Canadians

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 11, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Americans with plans on visiting Singapore are in luck! The island city-state in Southeast Asia announced that fully vaccinated travelers from U.S. and Canadian would now be allowed to visit, but there are still protocols to follow upon arrival. Singapore made headlines in late 2020 when Royal Caribbean International resumed operation from the port on board Quantum of the Seas. The cruises went so well, Royal Caribbean extended the ship’s season through the end of October 2021. Allowing tourists via air is another major step forward in the return of tourism for the city.

“We look forward to safely welcoming back U.S. and Canadian tourists to Singapore, providing the opportunity for travelers to fully explore all that our destination has to offer,” said Rachel Loh, the Senior Vice President America, Singapore Tourism Board Americas. “Our enhanced cleaning protocols, contactless amenities, and social distancing measures have been designed to mitigate the risk of spreading COVID-19.”

Singapore Travel Rules for Entry

Singapore may be open for vaccinated Americans, but there’s still plenty you need to do in order to visit. Singapore has a Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) where fully vaccinated U.S. and Canadian travelers looking to solidify travel plans can safely enter and depart Singapore. Visitors who are traveling to Singapore under the VTL must enter Singapore on designated VTL flights. Short-term visitors must also provide proof of travel insurance for COVID-related medical costs.

The most important thing is to have valid proof of vaccination. Singapore currently accepts vaccination certificates issued in the SMART Health Card (SHC) format, by issuers in Canada or the U.S. on the Common Trust Network. Singapore is one of the most-vaccinated places in the world with over 80% of citizens fully-vaccinated against COVID-19, a statistic that certainly contributed to the local government taking the next step in the reopening process.

RELATED: Royal Caribbean Extends Singapore Season for Quantum of the Seas

It’s important to remember that vaccinated travelers still need two negative COVID-19 PCR tests, including a pre-departure PCR test within 48 hours of scheduled departure, before they can enter Singapore. Visitors also need to take on-arrival test at Changi Airport and remain self-isolated until their negative test result is confirmed.

Flavor Stars: Chefs Anthony Sasso and Steven Raichlen

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine October 11, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Two of the world’s greatest chefs are bringing their best to sea in radically different — but delicious — ways for diners sailing aboard three of Windstar’s small ships. The chefs, Anthony Sasso and Steven Raichlen, differ in their backgrounds and culinary styles. But what they have in common is a downright obsessive drive for perfection and the skills to bring their delicious visions to life. Just reading the impressive profiles of these geniuses will make even the most discerning mouths water.

ANTHONY SASSO: Spanish Small Plates

Sasso didn’t grow up with a family of restaurateurs pushing him toward a career in cooking. He found the calling on his own.

His dad was a hard-working carpenter and his mother held down two and three jobs to help the family make ends meet.

“My three sisters and I were often stuck in the kitchen to fend for ourselves,” Sasso says.

Luckily his grandmother, who lived nearby, would come over to cook and there was always something intriguing on the stove. She would let the kids help out. Observing her helped Sasso form the vision of being a chef, even at that young age. But what really clinched it for him was that the Food Network was just taking off. He loved watching the chefs creating exotic dishes.

As a teenager, he began working in the kitchens of some of New York’s primo eating establishments. Still, it took a while for him to narrow his focus.

MSC Seashore Naming Ceremony to Take Place at Ocean Cay

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 8, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

The newest ship from MSC Cruises will enjoy an extra-special naming ceremony according to a press release from the cruise line! MSC Seashore, which just entered service this summer, will be at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve on November 18th for a naming ceremony featuring the Godmother of 16 MSC Cruises ships, actress Sophia Loren. The ship will leave PortMiami on the 17th and those invited on board will get an exclusive first look at the ship before she begins cruising the Bahamas and Caribbean from Miami beginning November 20th.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to launch our newest ship in Miami and celebrate its naming in Ocean Cay, as a further demonstration of our commitment to and investment in the U.S. market. Not only have we expanded our footprint in Florida by now offering two homeports with PortMiami and Port Canaveral to make our cruises even more accessible, but we’re also elevating the U.S. guest experience by bringing some of our best and most innovative ships for our North American guests. It is also no coincidence that Ocean Cay will be central to our celebrations next month. We can’t wait for more guests to see firsthand what makes the island so special,” said MSC Cruises USA President Ruben Rodriguez.

The festivities will occur on the island, a first for the cruise line, as well as on board the ship as it overnights at Ocean Cay. Highlights include a gala dinner and live entertainment.

RELATED: MSC Cruises Holds Delivery Ceremony for MSC Seashore

Ocean Cay officially opened in 2019 but sat in limbo this whole time as cruising was prohibited from US ports per the CDC’s no-sail order. No that the order is lifted and cruises are sailing from the United States again, MSC is thrilled to finally get guests on their private island.

The former sand-dredging operation has been completely transformed by MSC Cruises into a private paradise complete with protected ecosystems for the ocean’s flora and fauna. The island features more than two miles of sand beaches, private cabanas, a spa, shopping, and plenty of activities for happy cruisers enjoying their fun in the sun.

Explora Journeys Begins Construction on Second Ship

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 6, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

It wasn’t long ago we heard the news that MSC Cruises was launching a new luxury cruise brand called Explora Journeys and now we have new details about the line’s second ship slated for Spring 2024. The steel cutting ceremony for EXPLORA II took place at the Fincantieri shipyard near Naples, Italy today with Executive Chairman of MSC Group’s Cruise Division Pierfrancesco Vago and Explora Journeys CEO Michael Ungerer in attendance.

The second ship from Explora Journeys will be similar in design to the first with two more scheduled for 2025 and 2026. All four will be built by Fincantieri.

The start of Explora Journeys’ second ship signals our firm commitment to our tourism partners for the coming-to-market of our new luxury brand with a significant financial investment in a fleet of innovative, elegant ships, that will bring together our vision and purpose to create an ocean state of mind like no other said Vago. “Given our belief in this brand to create a new category in luxury, lifestyle travel, we will continue to invest in its expansion to attract the growing number and aspirations of the next generation of discerning luxury travelers.”

RELATED: MSC Cruises Introduces New Luxury Brand Explora Journeys

Explora Journeys CEO Michael Ungerer noted that the brand was already making a name for itself among travel professionals long before setting sail.

“We are greatly encouraged by the tremendous enthusiasm and support we have received so far from the travel advisor community who have placed their trust in Explora Journeys since our launch in June and for their overwhelming response to our exclusive `By Appointment’ service and innovative commercial terms, he said. “Explora Journeys has also been awarded ‘preferred’ status with a number of leading travel agency groups, an honor not normally bestowed on a brand prior to its coming into service, that demonstrates an unprecedented recognition from the luxury travel industry and which reinforces our commitment to, and confidence in, our robust B2B2C strategy.”

“By Appointment” Service

One of the most unique details about the new cruise line is their “by appointment” initiative where travel advisors can set up an appointment with a customer experience rep for a waitlist on a specific suite for one or more of the eight inaugural journeys during the first year of sailing. The goal is to make things easier on both travel agents and guests.

Fall Foliage Outside New England

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine October 6, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

BABCOCK STATE PARK

Clifftop, West Virginia

Let other tourists watch Maine’s Acadia National Forest turn from green to red and gold this autumn. The real fall connoisseur turns to the spectacular woods of West Virginia’s New River Gorge, dotted with waterfalls, a fully functional old-fashioned grist mill, and outlook points taking in miles of rolling, rainbow-hued hills.

KUBOTA GARDEN

Seattle, Washington

Japanese-American Fujitaro Kubota began working on a traditional East Asian garden among the woods of Seattle’s Rainer Beach neighborhood in 1927. Since then, the 20-acre landscape has become a haven for experiencing the tranquility of the outdoors. The garden is designed for easy strolling, and contains a curated collection of artistically manicured environments, equally appealing in the sunshine or in Seattle’s well-known fog and drizzle. The grounds are planted only with native species but carefully sculpted with bridges, streams, waterfalls, and rock outcroppings to amplify nature’s beauty, which is at its most breathtaking in autumn, when each tree tries to outdo its neighbor’s colorful display.

DURANGO-SILVERTON NARROW GAUGE RAILROAD

Durango, Colorado

The San Juan silver mines financed the train, but it’s gold that makes riders’ hearts soar every  autumn — along with vibrant pink, red, and yellow visible outside the vintage locomotive windows on a 3.5-hour fall foliage ride.

The Summer of ‘21 Travel Resumes Tour

by Steve Leland October 5, 2021
written by Steve Leland

Making up for the travel drought of 2020, a four month summer escape in the midst of pandemic pandemonium was just what the doctor ordered. Flying in the face of highly touted CDC warnings and after 12 flight segments, 6 cruises, 7 hotels, 15 different beds and 15 negative COVID tests, I’m surprisingly upbeat about the future of travel.

The ballyhooed new normal is far from anything resembling normalcy and if there is one thing consistent about new travel protocols, it’s that there is no consistency. Evolving regulations change in the blink of an eye and require diligent research for compliance. It’s as if the COVID gods are playing games with our intrepid travel dreams.

Playing By The Rules

Secluded away at home during the bummer of the summer in 2020, patience paid off in the fall when Mexico announced it sorely missed us and opened the gates to travel with a rather simple procedure. Produce a negative COVID test, hop on a reduced capacity plane and adios! Celebrate your good fortune south of the border in flip flops, a margarita in hand relaxing on a sunny beach. Hotels were half empty facilitating social distancing and locals and guests were responsibly wearing masks. To enter a hotel, shops and restaurants required temperature checks with many places seemingly obsessed with potential foot transmission of the virus. Stepping on a mat of disinfectant was strangely commonplace to enter buildings. Getting back home to the US was straightforward with no restrictions.

Fast forward to 2021 and jumping through bureaucratic hoops became a small price to pay for travel freedom. Jetting home in January from Cabo San Lucas required a negative test result provided compliments of the hotel. With vaccinations now available and the FOMO, several destinations declared they too were open for business, albeit with a hodgepodge of regulations.

Wading into the COVID tinged waters of the Caribbean, three trips to the US Virgin Islands required negative test results and filling out a health declaration form that would prompt a semi automated online ‘permission to enter’ response. On arrival, documents were checked and visitors were subjected to temperature checks at the airport. Returning back to the US required no further testing or restrictions. On the other hand, travel to St. Maarten required a negative test to enter, forms to fill in and a negative test to re-enter the US. Unlike Mexico, the cost of the test from the hotel was $65 per person but was reimbursed as a credit for hotel purchases. A rather clever way to generate spending onsite!

Mo’ Rules, Mo’ Rules & No Rules

By the summer of 2021, Europe, the land of travel dreams, had entered the fray and despite the fluctuating infection rates, the EU devised divergent travel protocols that seem to be effective. Our summer travel tour begins in June with a flight to Athens. Greece rolled out the welcome mat provided you could produce a negative test result and fill out a PLF (Personal Locator Form) prior to arrival. Once approved an online QR code was generated that permitted entry. Other than normal immigration procedures a quick glance at the code and our vaccination card and we were in. Four days in a hotel offered an opportunity to chance to explore Athens minus the normal tourist crowds.

Boarding the Celebrity Apex in Athens required a negative test conducted in the embarkation hall. A quick nasal swab, waiting for 20 minutes in a comfortable lounge for clearance and we were onboard the 3000+ passenger vessel, but sailing with only 330 guests. Enjoying the sweet life onboard unmasked, guests are free to venture ashore independently but to disembark after the cruise another test is conducted onboard at no cost.

Rinse And Repeat

From here it becomes standard procedure for a summer of cruises and destinations. Croatia, Italy, Malta, Hungary and Iceland each require the negative test result and filling out the PLF with well organized entry procedures, albeit slow at times.

Flying back to Mallorca from the US through Barcelona in early September was similar to the first flight back in June, however this time we took advantage of a program called Verifly which is available on select American Airlines flights. By filing in advance what is essentially an application to fly, travelers have access to a priority check in line, avoiding the otherwise long and slow moving queues.

RELATED: Steve Leland’s 2020 Travel Recap

In an instance that lacks understanding, to enter the UK we were required to have a negative test result and obligated to purchase a COVID test kit ($80 per person) prior to entry. To enter the country you had to show proof of this purchase. Two days after entering you were required to swab your nose yourself, put the swab in a box and mail it to a lab. As we only stayed three days our result came back two days after we had left for Spain. Had we stayed over eight days we would have been required to do another test. This procedure has since been eliminated. Good call!

All in all, the EU seems to have an advanced system verifying vaccinations. They issue a formal Green Passport to their citizens with an official QR code that is easily verified for those vaccinated. In spite of the debate over vaccination passports, US citizens are required to carry around a dog eared CDC index card with scribbled signatures. Possibly better than nothing but seems primitive compared to an online hi-tech alternative.

Time will tell how travel restrictions and regulations develop. For now the good news is that we can travel, provided we are willing to take a few minor steps to comply with international regulations. If you prefer to object to vaccinations enjoy your time at home. For me the advantage of resuming travel far outweighs any political or moral statement.

Aweigh We Go! Three Dream Destinations – St. Maarten, Athens, and Valletta

by Steve Leland October 4, 2021

After ships sat idle for what seemed like an eternity, cruising has returned with a race to establish homeport advantage. Straight out of the gate, favorites like St. Maarten and Athens are making strong bids for prominence, and Malta is nosing ahead of a crowded field of Mediterranean options.

Sailing the deep Caribbean has never been easier with Celebrity Millennium weighing anchor for 7-night cruises from St.Maarten. Athens has established itself as an appealing embarkation port for numerous cruise lines: Seabourn Ovation and the new Celebrity Apex, Windstar and SeaDream Yacht Club explore the Greek islands along with homegrown Variety Cruises and newcomer Elixir Cruises. An immensely popular port of call, Valletta, Malta, has become the home port for three ships of the Viking fleet, offering round-trip cruises to the Adriatic, Italy, and Greek islands.

The choppy seas of the past year have given way to smoother seas ahead and spending extra pre- or post-cruise time in these exciting destinations is a just reward for the wait.

Sint Maarten Maagic

At just 37 square miles, St. Maarten is one of the smaller parcels of land in the eastern Caribbean, but it’s just bursting with inimitable charm. The Caribbean vibe is tweaked with cosmopolitan Europe on a two-nation island (French St. Martin and Dutch Sint Maarten) defined by cultural combinations.

To fully appreciate the immense diversity of activities available on the island, one day won’t be enough. Renting a car is a wise option, and opting for an introductory tour is a great way to get the lay of the land.

Viking Sets Sail in Joint Venture with China Merchants

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 4, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Viking has a new joint venture with China Merchants Shekou to offer 8-day China Coastal Cultural Cruises from Shenzhen Shekou Port and the first cruise left over the weekend. Viking first entered the Chinese cruise market around five years ago and since then, have established a reputation for offering top quality cruises with a cultural focus, and for offering well above-average service that makes guests feel appreciated.

The first cruise was the maiden voyage of CM-Yidun, a Chinese-flagged vessel which features Nordic-style interiors, a library, a series of lectures, a spa with traditional Scandinavian bath rituals, shore excursions featuring several Privileged Access experiences, and original Viking dining concepts like the Mamsen’s Norwegian deli, Manfredi’s Italian Restaurant, and destination-focused menus.

“It is very exciting that we are able to launch a brand-new product and the first of its kind in China. We have always been about exploring the world in comfort, and now we offer our Chinese guests an opportunity to rediscover their own backyard in a new way – culturally enriching, in elegant comfort and with a unique touch of Nordic hospitality,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking. “We believe cruising is a boom industry in China, and that Chinese consumers’ demand for cruise travel will continue to grow and become more sophisticated. Our joint-venture partnership with the China Merchants Group will enable us to take advantage of this trend.”

Gaining appreciation for new cultures and customs is at the forefront of the new itineraries.

“The experience that we set out to create is one built on what has made Viking a success around the world and popular with our Chinese guests. We then added locally relevant elements to complement it,” said Wee-Hoon Tan, Vice President of Product Development & Marketing. “We have however kept the Nordic Shop, which aims to let Chinese guests get acquainted with both established and niche quality brands reflecting Nordic heritage and culture. Over in our jewelry shop, we are proud to be hosting world-renowned Gübelin from Switzerland and presenting its first-ever retail outlet in China. We are also pleased to have Chow Tai Fook—a household brand in China, which is showcasing on our ship many of its jewelry collections not readily available onshore.”

American Queen Steamboat Announces Rebrand with Victory Cruise Line

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 30, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

One of America’s most prominent steamboat river cruise companies used their platform at the Seatrade Cruise Global convention in Miami this week to announce a major rebrand with big implications for the future! American Queen Steamboat Company, the sister line of Victory Cruise Lines and a subsidiary of the Hornblower Group, announced that the company would move their headquarters from Indiana to Fort Lauderdale, FL and merge both American Queen and Victory into a single brand; American Queen Voyages.

Along with the rebrand, the new cruise company announced expanded itineraries to Alaska as well as the creation of 100 new jobs at their new office in Florida.

Shawn Bierdz, the president of American Queen Voyages, explained that the news marked a new chapter in American Queen’s already impressive legacy.

“Through a decade of transformation, American Queen Voyages has surged from the great American rivers to include lakes, ocean and expedition experiences,” he said. “Today, we are American Queen Voyages and embrace this simple but important expression – Discovery Runs Deep. As we move into this new chapter and introduce our version of encounter travel, we uphold the originating vision of our company’s founder and chairman, John Waggoner and his unwavering belief in the renaissance of U.S. river cruising and close-to-home adventures.”

Discovery Runs Deep

Part of the rebrand is to encourage guests to get further from the beaten path for authentic travel experiences. America is a large country with plenty to see, but not everyone takes that next step towards a truly unforgettable trip.

Emerald Cruises to Build Second Superyacht Emerald Sakara

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 29, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Not only does Emerald Cruises have another brand new superyacht on the horizon, but they’ve got a brand new place to sail it as well! The cruise line announced today that Emerald Sakara would join the fleet by 2023 and will offer cruises to the gorgeous Seychelles in the Indian Ocean. It will be the 11th ship in Emerald’s ocean and river fleet.

The newbuild comes as a result of high demand for ocean voyages. According to the cruise line, Black Sea itineraries sold out within two weeks, an impressive feat given the global pandemic.

“We’ve received enormous interest in yacht cruising since announcing the launch of Emerald Azzurra, and we’re thrilled to be able to announce the building of our second luxury superyacht, Emerald Sakara. The yacht’s name is Sanskrit for the idea of ‘thoughts becoming things,’ and refers to the philosophy that positive thoughts can manifest into reality. We love this idea, which underscores Emerald Cruises’ brand promise of making our guests’ dreams of taking a luxury yacht vacation for an exceptional value come to life,” said David Winterton, global director of brand & marketing, Emerald Cruises. “Just like we did eight years ago on the rivers, we are bringing our own style of innovative and contemporary cruising to the world’s celebrated oceans, and we cannot wait to welcome guests on board our two superyachts to explore some of the world’s most incredible regions with them.”

About Emerald Sakara

The new ship, currently under construction inHa Long City, Vietnam, will be a sister ship to Emerald Azzurra and the name is a Sanskrit mantra meaning “thoughts become things”. At just 100 guests, the ship stays true to Emerald’s award-winning focus on personalized service and guest satisfaction. Like her sister ship, Emerald Sakara will have 50 staterooms, 88% of which have a balcony. Other features include an infinity pool, spa, gym and marina platform with paddleboards and snorkeling equipment.

When the ship does set sail, the eight-day Tropical Charms of the Seychelles itinerary will call on Port Victoria (Mahé Island), Sainte-Anne Island, Cousin Island, Praslin Island, Grande-Soeur Island, Curieuse Island, La Digue Island and Aride Island.

First Loggerhead Turtles Hatch at Ocean Cay Marine Reserve

by Porthole Cruise and Travel September 29, 2021
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

MSC Cruises’ new private island resort Ocean Cay Marine Reserve is popular with cruisers and sea turtles alike according to a press release from the cruise line! MSC Cruises announced that since August, hundreds of Loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings have made their way from egg to sand to sea and that’s great news for an island with ambitions of being a haven for sea life.

The island included 64 square miles of protected waters and is still in the midst of its transformation from sand dredging operation to stunning tropical paradise. The fact that the turtles have arrived is a great sign that the island is getting close to reaching its full potential.

According to Linden Coppell, MSC Cruises’ Sustainability Director, the turtle hatchlings happened much, much quicker than expected.

“We are all absolutely thrilled to see Loggerhead turtles come to Ocean Cay’s beaches to lay eggs so soon. This can take many years to happen with a newly restored ecosystem and we weren’t certain that they would come or when. We hope to see many more hatchlings in future nesting seasons and that these recent arrivals return to Ocean Cay when the time comes for them to nest,” she said.

Once the nests were discovered, the team at MSC quickly marked and monitored them to ensure they were protected under the island’s Biodiversity Management Plan. Along with turtles, the island is a coral restoration project as reefs are a vitally important marine ecosystem.

When the island first opened in late 2019, MSC Cruises’ Executive Chairman Pierfrancesco Vago echoed the cruise line’s commitment to the environment.

“Ocean Cay is founded on a deep commitment to ecological principles – beliefs that shape everything from how venues are built, to how the island is run, to the kinds of activities featured on the island,” he said at the time.

What Makes the Caribbean the “Fifth C” in Buying Diamonds

by Elizabeth Martinez September 28, 2021
written by Elizabeth Martinez

They sparkle, glisten, and always capture attention. Yes, the waters of the Caribbean are enough of a reason to visit but the islands that make up some of the world’s top tourist destinations are also a great place to shop for a diamond as stunning as the azure Caribbean Sea. Plentiful and usually overflowing with options from classic to custom and everything in between, the diamond and jewelry shops in paradise boast attractive pricing, friendly service and other perks like airport pick-ups and more. Read on for some tips on making your diamond shopping experience a great one.

Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat

Contrary to what many shoppers think, a diamond’s cut is not about its shape (such as oval, pear or emerald) but instead about the artistry and workmanship that gives a gem its sparkle and brilliance. Poorly cut stones will look dull and dark, or see-through like glass, so the cut is probably the most important detail to examine. Cuts are rated from excellent to poor and shoppers should get the highest rated stone they can afford.

Color rating is also a bit of a misnomer as, in a diamond, this refers to the level of colorlessness, specifically measuring the presence of a yellow hue.

Clarity refers to inclusions (flaws) that occur inside the gemstone. Most of these, however, are only visible through a powerful microscope and therefore, not the most important detail.

The term “carat” can also be misunderstood, as it refers to a diamond’s weight and not its size. A diamond’s weight is not related to how much it might sparkle, either, so bigger is not always better.

While important to keep these details in mind, there are other factors that can also help you find the perfect bauble and the ideal souvenir from your trip.
