The Cape of Good Times in Cap Ferrat

by Kate Wickers May 19, 2022
written by Kate Wickers

It was King Leopold II of Belgium who, in the early 1900s, first cottoned on that it would be a shrewd idea to buy up land on Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat (known to most simply as Cap Ferrat). He snapped up the region’s grandest house — Villa Cedres, built in 1804 — which he embellished with botanical gardens and tunnels that ran to the homes of several mistresses. It is set high on the cliffs, and blushes pink in the midday sun. In 2020, it was sold for a rumoured $221 million, so no wonder it looks a little embarrassed. And the location? Cap Ferrat — found between Nice and Monaco on the Cote d’Azur, covering 494 acres between the towns of Beaulieu-sur-Mer and Villafranche-sur-Mer — is now France’s most exclusive holiday destination.

Indulgence Yesterday and Today

For an insight into Cap Ferrat’s hedonistic heyday, two historic villas that are open to the public (a third, the home of artist, writer, and filmmaker Jean Cocteau, is under renovation). Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild is our first destination, built by heiress Beatrice de Rothschild in 1907. Here it’s easy to conjure up the extravagance of the era while wandering through the villa’s opulent salons such as the villa’s centerpiece — a grand atrium — where lavish parties were held. Beatrice furnished the villa with rare furniture and objet d’art and indulged her love of horticulture in the creation of nine gardens of varying designs from Provencal to Japanese. In the French Garden, musical fountains spurt to life at regular intervals making it impossible not to break into a waltz as you explore. Villa Kerylos, a little further along the peninsula, is possibly the finest example of a wealthy man living his dream. Theodore Reinach, a 20th-century scholar of Ancient Greece, was so obsessed by his specialist subject that, in 1902, he created his very own Greek villa, complete with columns made from….

Travel Terrific in these Deluxe Hotels

by Porthole Cruise and Travel May 18, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Cutting-edge hotels are pioneering new ways to travel beautifully and sustainably. Two recent concepts prove that luxury travel can be eco-friendly and still offer one-of-a-kind experiences. Moliving is a nomadic luxury hotel, with modular dwellings (think: cute cabins) that move around, delivering extraordinary natural destinations while maintaining the highest standards of service. A lakeside lodge in August can become a tropical beach hideaway in November, then a Colorado ski resort in February, all without leaving a trace.

The Swedish Treehotel, on the other hand, has a new double room for their location high in the Harads pines. The Biosphere has been designed by architect Bjarke Ingels and ornithologist Ulf Ohman to provide deluxe accommodations for two human guests and 350 bird families. After crossing a small suspension bridge, the humans can enjoy a glass-clad, 365-square-foot interior decorated with organic materials in a rich, dark palette, while the birds fly in and out of a facade of nesting boxes. A rooftop terrace allows ample space to gaze out at the forest … and, of course, for birdwatching.

“Forestry has led to a reduced number of natural holes in trees where breeding birds nest,” Ohman says. “The installation of bird nests is, therefore, an important measure to take.”

More Inclusive Expeditions

Norwegian line Hurtigruten Expeditions is taking steps to make their brand of exploration open to travelers from any background. The new Black Traveler Advisory Board (BTAB) consists of six travel pros from the tourism, outdoor, and adventure industries who have agreed to help the line — and, eventually, the cruising industry as whole — be better at attracting, including, and having a good time with people of different races. The board includes entrepreneurs, travel advisors, and executives in charge of tourism organizations and government commissions. Along with their appointments, members will sail on select departures including Antarctica and the new West Africa cruises launching this fall.

Says BTAB founder Anders Lindström: “We are honored that these incredible leaders within their fields will work with us to drive visibility, identify opportunities within the Black travel movement, and help achieve some of our tangible goals. These include identifying Black scientists as potential lecturers onboard our ships, attracting more expedition leaders of color, learning more about unsung Black explorers that can be incorporated into the company’s expedition cruise itineraries, improving both our written and visual communications and marketing materials, and amplifying career opportunities through their networks.”

Sound Science Listens for Whales

For their inaugural season in Alaska, American Queen Voyages has announced an unusually deep partnership. They’ve teamed up with Sound Science Research Collective acoustic ecologist Dr. Michelle Fournet to give guests a new way to get close to humpback whales, by listening to their songs and translating what they’re saying to each other. As part of the arrangement, the ship Ocean Victory has become an extension of Fournet’s lab, providing a work space for researchers from California Polytechnic State University. Guests will help the….

Shop Around: Portland, Seattle, Alaska

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine May 16, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

As we enter a long-awaited season of West Coast departures, sailing for summers through the Pacific Northwest to Alaska, there are treasures waiting to be discovered. Every stop along the way has its own special flavor, with things you can’t find anywhere else. These are some of our favorites.

PORTLAND: Powell’s City of Books

The world’s largest used and new bookstore occupies a full city block — and an even larger space in the hearts of readers who’ve shopped there, scoring everything from rare first editions to well-loved copies of the perfect beach read.

SEATTLE: Fremont Vintage Mall

Part artists’ collective, part market bazaar, this cultural hotspot — located in the neighborhood known as “the Center of the Universe” — offers everything from designer jewelry to mid-century furniture, unique accessories to nostalgia-inducing collectibles, funky objets d’art to formal evening gowns. The selection can be bewildering, but you’re bound to find something wonderful.

ALASKA: Glacial Naturals

The Great Land is renowned for its natural beauty. Those same Alaskan resources have been sustainably harvested to create skin care, bath salts, aromatherapy products, and flavorful seasonings, each formulated with wild, local, or certified organic ingredients.

Departing from Port of Civitavecchia near Rome, Italy on August 8, 2022, Celebrity Beyond spends at day at sea before calling on Santorini, Rhodes, Mykonos, Athens/Piraeus, Nafplion, Argostolion, and Naples before returning to Rome.

New ship means higher prices, but considering the quality of and the number of calls over 10-days, this cruise is a once in a lifetime opportunity! Riding the Rails Up North: Alaska and Canada’s Best Trains

by Theresa Russell May 12, 2022
written by Theresa Russell

The whistle blows, the brakes hiss, and passengers admire the view from giant windows as the train lurches forward. Whether it’s for the romance, the nostalgia, or a quest for slow travel, a train journey checks a lot of boxes. Your ride may be a several-day adventure or an excursion for just a few hours, yet it’s enough for you to start reassessing your travel priorities. You start thinking in terms of bucket-list travel. The act of sharing an experience with your companions moves to the forefront of your expectations.

Train travel invites guests to be lulled by the clickety-clack of the wheels and the singing of the steel rails, all while enjoying the diversity of nature as the train snakes through scenic panoramas. For those looking to experience the Rocky Mountains and the Great North this way, there are several options.

Rocky Mountaineer

Embarking in Vancouver, this luxury train adventure visits several national parks in Canada, including in Banff and Jasper. The most popular tour spends two days traveling to Banff. Large domed windows offer breathtaking views of ever-changing grandeur. Besides the geologic formations along the way, one of the high points of this journey is the travel through the Spiral Tunnels, an efficient way for the train to gain elevation.

Enjoying food sourced from local producers, guests experience a culinary adventure during the included breakfasts and lunches. Gold Leaf guests travel in a double-decker car with meals served in a dining room below, while Silver Leaf guests enjoy the same great food in the comfort of their seats. Both classes of service feature local wine and beer.

Each car comes with a host who narrates the journey, providing information about the communities along the way, the history of the railway, and the natural beauty surrounding the train. Viewing platforms allow guests to enjoy the fresh air and capture shots of the inspiring scenery.

At the end of the day, all guests stay at local hotels and enjoy their evening meals on their own.

Beyond the North, Rocky Mountaineer offers several journeys of varying lengths to multiple destinations, and recently commenced operations in the American Southwest.

The White Pass and Yukon Railway

A day excursion popular with cruisers, the WPYR begins its journey in the town of Skagway, a port city intimately tied with the Klondike Gold Rush. Those intrepid adventurers seeking their stake in Dawson City encountered….

Cuisine

When you’re hungry on board Wonder of the Seas, there’s no shortage of options. From the three-level main dining room found aft on decks 3, 4 and 5, to the thirteen specialty dining restaurants, there’s sure to be something that delights even the pickiest palates. In the main dining room, guests can eat between 5:30 and 8pm with the other option being “My Time Dining” between 6:30 and 9:30pm, but your seating area and server may change each visit. Guests can view the daily menus in the Royal Caribbean app. Windjammer Marketplace on Deck 15 is another popular dining option offering buffet-style meals for breakfast and lunch.

Other included dining venues are Sorrento’s pizza, Boardwalk Dog House, Cafe Promenade, Park Cafe, El Loco Fresh, the Solarium Bistro, the Vitality Cafe and room service.

Specialty restaurants on board Wonder of the Seas are similar to what you’ll find across Royal Caribbean’s fleet, but with one notable exception: The Mason Jar. Southern-style cuisine is comfort food in big portions and that’s what you’ll find at The Mason Jar.

Before we even get to the food, let’s start with the selection of specialty cocktails like the Mississippi Moonlight, an Ole Smoky Blackberry Moonshine mixed with fresh blackberries and lemonade. There’s also the classic Mint Julep made with Maker’s Mark, homemade mint simple syrup, fresh mint and powdered with sugar at the table.

Once you’ve decided on a morning pick-me-up, take your time perusing a menu chock-full of Southern staples. For Brunch, we highly recommend Meemaw’s Fried Chicken N’ Waffles or for those looking for a sugar rush, the Red Velvet Pancakes. Don’t skip the pimento cheese, either. The dinner menu drips with Southern flavor as well, like a classic po’ boy sandwich, shrimp n’ grits, blackened cajun catfish and the popular Meat N’ Two fixings dinner which includes your choice of St. Louis-Style Ribs, beef brisket or fried chicken with coleslaw, sweet potato fries, cajun fries, mashed potatoes, mac n’ cheese or collard greens as the side options.

The other specialty dining options will be familiar to Royal cruisers, like Chops Grille, 150 Central Park, Izumi, Hooked Seafood, Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen, Wonderland, Playmakers and Johnny Rockets.

Features

The fifth Oasis-class ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet, Wonder of the Seas takes what her sister ships do well and builds upon it. Guests on board need to ask themselves, what speed do I want to vacation at? Because there are countless options to tailor your perfect cruise.

Let’s start with the redesigned deck 15 which offers multiple places to catch some rays, cool off, and have a little fun, too! Featuring two main pools, a beach pool, and the children’s play area Splashaway Bay, the pool deck is where cruisers gravitate on sea days to soak up the sunshine, mingle with their fellow cruisers, have a drink at The Lime & Coconut and enjoy their cruise to the fullest. Despite the capacity, ample seating around the pool deck means finding a chair probably won’t be difficult for those who like to stake their claim.

At the bow of Deck 15 is the adults-only (16+) two-deck Solarium and it’s easily our favorite of all the Oasis-class ships. This is the spot to unwind as the quiet atmosphere, tiered whirlpools and countless lounge chairs and daybeds are calling. The views of the surrounding ocean are second to none anywhere on the ship and the evening cocktail hour as the sun sets is simply delightful.

Aft on Deck 16 also home to the Flowrider surfing simulator and the brand new Wonder Playscape, a children’s play area with an under-the-sea theme. On past Oasis-class ships, this area was home to a 2nd Flowrider, but not on Wonder of the Seas. The Playscape features oversized games like tic-tac-toe, kid-sized slides, climbing walls and an interactive mural of sea creatures to explore. Cruisers will also find Wonder Dunes, the nautical-themed mini-golf course, the Sports Court, the zipline, and the top of The Ultimate Abyss Slide which spirals down 10 stories to the Deck 6 boardwalk.

Speaking of the boardwalk, that’s where cruisers will find the ever popular Aquatheater where Royal Caribbean entertainers perform stunning 30-foot dives and acrobatics high above the deepest pool at sea. Don’t dilly dally when it comes to booking your Aquatheater experience as the shows fill up fast!

The Royal Promenade on Deck 5 is where cruisers enter the ship for the first time and the hustle and bustle of activity sure is fun! Home to popular spots like the Rising Tide Bar, Cafe Promenade, Sorrentos pizza, Boleros, Bionic Bar, Guest Services and more. If you’re looking for something to do while on board, starting on the promenade isn’t a bad idea!

Central Park, the open-air promenade on Deck 8 was perhaps our favorite spot on the ship for a number of different reasons. First of all, the convenience factor of Deck 8 can’t be overstated. Home to a handful of specialty restaurants, the Park Cafe and the top of the Rising Tide bar, Deck 8 is a delight for cruisers who don’t want to go far for their morning coffee or evening glass of vino. The real gardens which line the walkways give the space a fresh smell and natural feel, a welcome change of pace from the excitement of the pool deck.

For those looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle of a cruise vacation, the Vitality Spa is your oasis. A full service spa at sea, Vitality offers the same amenities you’d find at any high-end spa on land. Guests will enjoy relaxing in the whirlpools, saunas and on the stone lounges before treatments like seaweed wraps, facials, massages and more. The state-of-the-art fitness center has all the equipment you need to truly enjoy that evening slice of cake.

Staterooms

What makes Wonder of the Seas stand out from the rest is your options, and nowhere is that more evident than with the stateroom selection. From the smaller, interior cabins without windows to the opulent 2-story family suite and everything in between, there’s a stateroom that suits your needs on this behemoth of a ship.

Let’s start with the most popular stateroom variety on a cruise – the balcony. Frequent Royal cruisers, particularly those who’ve sailed on the newer vessels, will recognize the blue and cream color scheme often found in Royal Caribbean staterooms. You won’t find any brand new tech or advancements in your stateroom on Wonder of the Seas, but the simple comfort and elegance makes for a pleasant place to call home for a week or more.

A welcome positive? The space. Two closets on either side of the bed hold ample hangers and a space for the room safe. A dresser by the desk also provides extra room for clothing and other items. Even with two people, there was more than enough space to unpack, unwind and really get into cruise mode.

While the bed in the balcony room was excellent overall, the gap between the two mattresses did at times get wider than expected, leading to some slightly awkward wake-ups “in the crack”, as the joke went. Cuddle bugs may find this problem worse than others.

Guests can also opt for oceanview and interior rooms, but with such spectacular destinations on the horizon, the view from your own private balcony is second to none!

The suite neighborhood on Wonder of the Seas is a new feature that brings the ultimate luxury to see. A separate section of the ship found at the top of the ship on Decks 17 and 18, the Suite Neighborhood features its own lounge, sundeck and plunge pool as well as a concierge desk with the ability to cater to pretty much your every need. The Suite Neighborhood also features it’s own restaurant, Coastal Kitchen, available for those in suites, mini-suites, and Pinnacle Club members. Both Sky Class and Royal Class suites can be found in the new neighborhood.

For those cruising with kids or in a group, the two-story Ultimate Family Suite is nearly the same size as a standard condo on land at nearly 1,200 square feet. It can accommodate up to 10 people and features a 212 square foot balcony. It also comes with a slide, air hockey, table tennis and more.

Entertainment

When Royal Caribbean first unveiled the entertainment options on Wonder of the Seas, they billed it as a “Wonder for the Senses Across Air, Ice, Water, and Stage.” After enjoying the lineup of shows and live music from a cast of more than 100 entertainers on the inaugural cruise, it’s clear Royal Caribbean puts entertainment at the forefront of the cruise experience.

Found exclusively on board Oasis-class ships, the Aquathearter is one of the most unique entertainment venues at sea. Featuring the deepest pool at sea to accommodate high dives from the 30-foot platform high above the crowd, the stage hosts multiple different style performances, weather permitting of course. A new show playing in the Wonder of the Seas Aquatheater is inTENse, a diving and acrobatic show with an all female cast of performers that is a must see.

Other live performances include “365: The Seasons on Ice” at the ice skating rink called Studio B; “The Effectors II: Crash ‘n’ Burn;” and “Voices: An Intimate Performance on a Grand Scale” in the Royal Theater.

Guests can also find live music at the Mason Jar, The Lime and Coconut bar, the Music Hall, Boleros, the Cask & Clipper and the Schooner bar. Also keep an eye out for the Stowaway Piano who appears around the ship tickling the ivory for guests.

For the younger crowd, or those young at heart, late night hot spots include the casino on Deck  and The Attic, the late night dance club where you’ll find cruisers two-stepping the night away.

She’s a 19-time World Champion gymnast with 7 Olympic medals to boot, but Simone Biles has a new achievement to hang in her hall of awards, Godmother of the new Celebrity Beyond!

In a press release this morning, Celebrity Cruises revealed that Biles would be named Godmother of their new ship which just debuted in Europe. In her role as Godmother, Biles will name Celebrity Beyond at the official ceremony in Fort Lauderdale on November 4, 2022.

The Scarlet Lady

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine May 10, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Dominican Daze… a perfect description for Virgin Voyages’ dreamy 5 night getaway to the Caribbean. Setting sail from Miami, I had the pleasure of joining the Scarlet Lady and her crew on a journey to the Dominican Republic and The Bahamas – and it’s one that I won’t forget. From the second you enter the terminal, you are greeted with friendly faces and an instant feeling of luxury. The vessel itself breaks all stereotypes and feels more like a floating 5 star hotel than a cruise ship. The cabins are pristine with modern features such as iPads to control the mood lighting, the movies and even the curtains.

Decked out with 20+ eateries (with Michelin chefs behind the menus) Virgin Voyages really have pulled out all the stops when it comes to the dining experience. Moving away from the typical buffet style food you would usually have on a cruise, the restaurants serve full meals and the level of standard is exceptional. A particular highlight would have to be The Test Kitchen where you are served 6 experimental courses, each paired with your desired choice of beverage. Dressed in laboratory style attire, the staff prepare dishes in front of you and the menu is full of surprises to say the least. Another memorable culinary moment was Gunbae; a Korean BBQ which transports you to Asia and hosts staff that hold such passion for their cuisine. Every restaurant has such impeccable interior design that not only the memory of the food stays with you, the setting that you experienced it in does too.

The level of entertainment on the boat was diverse and far reaching. Starting with an afternoon performance of Darillo, a Brazilian born singer who performed in solo with an acoustic guitar. He had a beautiful voice with hints Of Newton Faulkner about him and a very accomplished guitarist too. The set was a very chilled with songs ranging from Lionel Ritchie to John Mayer, a fine way to spend the afternoon with a cocktail or two..
The ship has a bespoke boutique like theatre titled The Red Room. A state of the art space with multiple layouts that immerses you In the performance on a far more intimate level The Red Room showcased two shows during the voyage, Ships in the Night and Duel Reality.

Ships in The Night Is an eclectic and unusual view of us as individuals and how our lives pass by and rarely touch each other. This was set to a soundtrack of songs from Adamski ,Super Tramp,Bowie, Charlie xcx, Miley Cirus., Culture club and Sylvester. The use of cutting edge visual technology and immersive choreography guided you through this pensive journey beautifully.

The second show by the 7 fingers team was Duel Reality. This was loosely based on the Montagues and the Capulets and the love story of Rome and Juliet. The struggle of the waring families Is set in a gladiatorial arena where battles are represented by acrobatic competitions. The stunning array of juggling, acrobatic and balancing performances during the battlesIs are truly breath taking, from the coolest hula hoop routine to a see saw showdown and gravity defying trapeze. This Is really a new interpretation of a classic and performed by a remarkably talented troupe.
Through the voyage members of both cast will appear around the ship dancing, singing and tirelessly bringing good vibes to all and ending up with a final spectacular on the Top deck party for The Scarlet Night where all cast and passengers Revell in the ships amazing top deck pool for one last party.

If you haven’t had enough entertainment from the shows there Is the Manor, this Is a two story club that has Its influence set circa 1976 around New Yorks legendary Studio 54. This has a an old school table service and three bars to choose from. Then DJ spins tunes from back In the day from the likes of Earth Wind and Fire, Rick James, Chic and Moroder This is all set to the back drop of a state of the art disco light rig giving the audience a real chance to get the party started.

The bar showcases the house band, that play 2 sets a night with all the classics hits and a big selection of Spanish hits as well. The band are great players and rock hard, and again lead by the unique voice of Darillo. Also in the bar, early evenings offer a sing along set with your Latin hostess and with all the Latin classics to get you In the mood for the evenings festivities.

If all of this has left you still needing more music there Is always the opportunity to be the star of your own show in the Karaoke arena. There are several pop up karaoke spots during the cruise but If you wan to get serious about It you can book a session at The Groupie. This Is a bespoke set of studios/lounges with great Mics and PA so you can feature In your own version of a Star Is Born.

The Scarlet Lady is a ship that you never want to get off… but when you do, finding yourself on the tropical shores of the Dominican Republic or the Bahamas isn’t a bad alternative. Being chauffeured to Virgin’s private beach club in Bimini means that, whilst the adventure can continue island-style, you really don’t have to lift a finger. The white sand and crystal waters that surround you are the perfect accompaniment to the Caribbean style lunch that the chefs prepare for you and then serenaded with a ukulele led band of minstrels on the beach at sundown.

It really is impossible to summerize the experience that is a Virgin Voyage. The attention to detail and level of service and entertainment that the crew provide makes the cruise truly spectacular and I know I’ll be returning for more.

Catching Up with USVI Tourism Commissioner Joseph Boschulte

by Porthole Cruise and Travel May 5, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

One of the most famous regions in all of cruising is taking charge of their tourism recovery and things are looking bright for the future!

Joseph Boschulte, Commissioner of Tourism for the U.S. Virgin Islands, joined Porthole Cruise Magazine founder and Editor-in-Chief Bill Panoff at Seatrade Cruise Global to talk about the islands of St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix and how the return of cruising is going to help the islands in their post-COVID economic recovery.

Watch the full interview with Commissioner of Tourism for the U.S. Virgin Islands Joseph Boschulte below!

2021 saw a boom in air travel to the islands and the hope is that with cruise ships slowly reaching 100% occupancy, the cruise boom is imminent.

“[Tourism] is looking really really incredible for the upcoming year. We used to be very seasonal from a destination standpoint and our outlook for the summer is incredible,” Boschulte said. So there’s no drop off from the winter season into the summer season. It’s a steady flow so we’re grateful for that.”

Meet New Director of PortMiami Hydi Webb

by Porthole Cruise and Travel May 4, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Following the departure of former PortMiami Director Juan Kuryla, longtime employee Hydi Webb was the natural choice to take over. A port employee since 1992, Webb was named deputy port director in 2018 and was the interim port director prior to assuming her new position.

Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine Editor-in-Chief Bill Panoff had the opportunity to catch up with her at Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami last week and she filled us in on what her role will entail, a rundown of the new terminals and what PortMiami has in store for the future of cruising from The Magic City!

Check out the interview with Hydi Webb below and stay tuned for all the interviews from Seatrade Cruise Global!

PortMiami’s New Terminals

The port has seen incredible expansion over the past few years with new terminals opening for Norwegian Cruise Line, Virgin Voyages, and another one the way for MSC Cruises’ new LNG-ships like MSC Seashore.

RELATED: BRIGHTLINE ANNOUNCES APPROVAL ON PORTMIAMI EXPANSION

Once completed, the MSC terminal be able to handle disembarkation and embarkation for three ships every day. Last year the port also worked with Mayor of Miami-Dade County Daniella Levine Cava to bring shore power to ships when they dock in port, which can be up to 9 ships per day.

When is the last time you sailed from PortMiami? Let us know in the comments!

Day @ Sea: MSC Seashore

by Jason Leppert May 3, 2022
written by Jason Leppert

MSC Seashore may be the newest addition to MSC Cruises’ fleet, but the ship’s story actually began in 2013 when Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri presented a concept design called Project Mille. The prototype featured a narrow superstructure balanced uniformly across its length, including a more centrally located engine room and exhaust stack. By redistributing heavier items such as spas and pools to lower decks, the upper levels could reach greater heights (and thus additional decks) without minimizing overall stability — itself quite an innovation.

The following year, MSC placed an order with Fincantieri to build the Seaside-class — starting with the eponymous MSC Seaside — seemingly based on Mille, at least unofficially. (Gearheads keeping track might also recognize that Norwegian Cruise Line’s upcoming Norwegian Prima and Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady and their respective sister ships appear to share a similar tall, narrow platform, albeit with several architectural differences.)

Then in 2017, after being built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, MSC Seaside launched with its promised bold profile and unique layout. Purposefully reminiscent of one of Miami’s contemporary condominium towers, the line’s first vessel dedicated to the North American market was a standout when docked at its initial Floridian homeport.

“The Ship That Follows the Sun”

Seaside was touted by MSC as an outward-facing ship focused on ocean views and saturated with deck space for sunbathing. But that wasn’t the only new element.

One of the main pools was relocated, as Mille prescribed, from its traditional high perch to the lower promenade deck. A divided buffet evenly distributed crowds — The Marketplace Buffet, uniquely situated on Deck 8, drew attention to the Waterfront Boardwalk, while a secondary Biscayne Bay Restaurant & Buffet resided on Deck 16.

The boardwalk was terraced at the stern, with the aft South Beach Pool down a level and the ship’s arcade, virtual reality simulators (formula one and interactive XD cinema), bowling alley, and billiards installed just inside.

The room freed up back on Deck 16 was then reserved for Seaside’s specialty restaurants. Butcher’s Cut, Ocean Cay Restaurant, and the freshly revealed Asian Market Kitchen by Roy Yamaguchi (consisting of sushi, teppanyaki, and fusion elements) were nestled between the public upper buffet and private MSC Yacht Club. While promenade venues and other decks successfully emphasized flow, the placement of divided eateries up top resulted in an uncharacteristic cul-de-sac of food with little means to easily pass through.

The Emergence of EVO

Of course, as each new ship joins a class, changes are likely — but when sister ship MSC Seaview came online a year later in 2018, the two shared identical deck plans. It wasn’t until the Seaside-class transformed into the Seaside EVO-class — the first of which is the 2021-launched MSC Seashore — that significant additions, omissions, and reconfigurations were made. The newest of MSC’s “Sea” ships greatly expands and improves the original design.

Specification-wise, EVO is larger in length and capacity, increasing from 153,516 gross tons and 5,079 guests to 169,400 tons and 5,632 passengers.

She Sells “Sea” Ships by the Seashore

Unlike Seaside and Seaview, racing zip lines aren’t featured on Seashore, but a sports court, trio of waterslides, Adventure Trail ropes course, and aqua park still crown this latest ship. Adjacent to the waterpark are the extensive kids, tweens, and teens clubs of Doremiland, now placed towards the front. The Hall of Games (arcade and simulators) has relocated to its side, minus the bowling this time around.

The result is a perfectly contiguous arrangement of youth (and young-at-heart) activities that stretches to the forward, now double-decker Jungle Pool Lounge — shifted down a level — and aft Long Island Pool — which has been pushed up a deck to accommodate the consolidated Marketplace Buffet & Restaurant below. This single self-service dining room has been enlarged and placed on the same level as

the Bridge of Sighs glass-floored catwalk for cantilevered views over the stern — conveniently lubricated, as it were, by the nearby Sky Bar.

A Ship Within a Ship

Meanwhile, Seashore’s MSC Yacht Club is mostly unaltered since Seaside. The exclusive observation lounge and restaurant remain stacked on top of each other at the scenic front of the ship. But, the elongated private pool deck and outdoor bar and grill have been moved up a level to add more high-end suites in between.

Down on Deck 8 (and again enhancing passenger flow), the Waterfront Promenade and inviting Infinity Pool are now on the same level without interruption. What’s missing is a second buffet, in favor of the Chef’s Court collection of specialty dining. The line’s signature steakhouse and seafood restaurant have been repeated, but celebrity chef Yamaguchi’s eateries have been replaced with Kaito Teppanyaki and Kaito Sushi Bar, complete with a cool, meandering dish conveyor. The court’s attached bar has been expanded into two venues, one each for cocktails and wine, and the streamlined layout eliminates any previous roadblocks.

Just in front, flanking the atrium and its Swarovski crystal-adorned stairs, Bistro La Boheme has been swapped out for HOLA! Tacos & Cantina. Farther forward, a pool room has been tacked on to the Sports Bar to reintroduce billiards. The presence of Uptown Lounge behind the specialty restaurants partially makes up for the loss of the previous Haven Lounge on Deck 7, as does the floor’s newly unveiled Le Cabaret Rouge. The two-level entertainment venue also acts as an aft-facing observation lounge and a welcome public equivalent to the MSC Yacht Club’s private lounge.

Time to Say Goodbye

Entirely gone on Seashore, however, is the fun automotive-themed Garage Club and adjacent bowling alley. In their place are the additional 5th Avenue Restaurant (main dining) and Manhattan Restaurant (exclusive to Aurea guests). Thankfully also along for the ride are Venchi 1878’s tempting chocolate and gelato bars.

Finally, ship nerds who make a hobby of thoroughly comparing deck plans and scouring their every detail will note the photo gallery on Deck 5 is punctuated with a new kiosk highlighting the line’s philanthropic MSC Foundation. A final note, that is, other than the relocation of the business center from Deck 6 to Deck 8.

Through all these changes, big and small, MSC Seashore quite simply shows an exemplary evolution from MSC Seaside and MSC Seaview before her. She currently serves as a fine flagship for MSC Cruises’ U.S.-based fleet, currently departing from Miami.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Epic Difference

by Steve Leland May 2, 2022
written by Steve Leland

Whoever said that all cruise ships are created equal should be subject to a public flogging on deck. Sure they all have entertainment, food and more food, activities galore and they cruise to the four corners of the globe. But how they execute these amenities is what distinguishes one brand from another. Some place emphasis on luxury, others on food while some focus on exotic itineraries. Each to their own, there’s something for every taste.

With four Norwegian Cruise Line cruises under my belt (literally), I’ve taken notice of distinct characteristics that set them apart from others. Our most recent cruise on the Norwegian Epic out of Rome confirmed my observations and although the one time flag bearer for the brand may have been upstaged by newer ships like the Bliss and the upcoming Prima, she still retains the out of the box thinking that has made NCL one of the industry leaders.

Norwegian Epic
Scene from Priscilla, Queen of the Desert | Photo: Norwegian Cruise Line

Now That’s Entertainment

NCL goes far beyond basic with expertly produced Broadway shows such as Jersey Boys and Kinky Boots. Last November I was blown away by the production of Six aboard the Norwegian Bliss and commented at the time that it was the best show I’d ever seen aboard a cruise ship. Here on the Epic, that comment is now moot as we were completely enthralled with a performance of the award winning show Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and then to top them all their production of Burn The Floor demonstrated the emphasis NCL places on entertainment quality.

It’s not just the big production shows that grab your attention as super talented special acts entertain each night. Take in a American Idol finalist one night, an amazing vocal quartet another and travel back to the sixties for a special concert by a mop haired Beatles cover band.

Think your night is over? Not even close! As you wander out of the Epic Theater, stroll the deck and duck into the Spiegil Tent, a two level showroom featuring a juggler one night, an escape room experience another and musicians on others.  Twenty steps along enter the Headliner Comedy Club that puts the spotlight on comedy acts, a magician or a dueling pianos act that will offer a Howling At The Moon opportunity.  Enough?  Oh no!  Keep it up my friend, there’s the atrium area with non stop TV game shows, Shakers with musical entertainment and the Cavern Club with performances by the Fab Four harkening back to the days of the British Invasion. The Bliss Lounge is a trendy nightclub that keeps the action going till the wee hours.

Norwegian Epic
Dining in Cagney's | Photo: Norwegian Cruise Line

So Look, Here’s The Meal

Variety may be the spice of life but it is also a key ingredient in a sure fire recipe for enhanced dining experiences aboard an NCL ship. Dine in the full service Manhattan Room with a live band and even a dance floor to bust out some moves between courses. Maybe the Asian influenced Shanghai’s Noodle Bar or O’Sheehan’s Bar and Grill serving daily specials for breakfast lunch and dinner in a pub like setting might be your cup of tea. The Garden Cafe is a buffet venue with themed specials or the Great Outdoor for lunch by the pool. These are all complimentary alternatives but if you want to experience extravagant culinary prowess look no further than the ship’s specialty restaurants.

Le Bistro for dining with French flair, Cagney’s Steakhouse for the carnivores among you, Moderno serves up an authentic churrascaria experience and Teppanyaki proffers table side entertainment as your personal chef dices, slices and cooks up your meal. La Cucina brings la dolce vita to Italian food lovers and Yakitori for fresh a la carte sushi.

Norwegian Epic

Rules Are For Land

NCL has demonstrated a propensity for tweaking cruise norms aboard the Epic. Speaking of out of the box thinking, how about curved walls in the staterooms that eliminate that boxed in feeling. How about an actual two lane bowling alley, pool tables and arcade games adjacent to O’Sheenhan’s? Summon up your inner child with triple water flume slides and a rock climbing wall. Wanna just chill out?  Shiver up for an ice cold drink in the ship’s Ice Bar. It was NCL that came up with a go kart track on the NCL Bliss and the soon to be launched Prima will feature pools that are on the side of the ship. The Haven is designed as an upscale ship within a ship enclave for the cruiser that prefers intimate personalized accommodations.

RELATED: NEW NCL SHIP NORWEGIAN VIVA COMING IN 2023

It’s been a fantastic springtime voyage in the Mediterranean with a new port every day. I’d often mentioned that I’m not a big ship person but the last two cruises with NCL have flipped me.  I enjoy all of the amenities that these larger ships offer and especially those that take cruise engagement to new levels. I need to get back home and get my schedule primed for the new Norwegian Prima launch in September. Now that should be a real epic event!
