CELEBRITY BEYOND NAMED BY GODMOTHER SIMONE BILES BEFORE INAUGURAL US SAILING

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 7, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Celebrity Cruises’ newest ship, Celebrity Beyond, set sail from Fort Lauderdale this past Friday, November 4, marking the start of its inaugural Caribbean season. Kicking off the highly anticipated festivities was the ship’s official naming ceremony, led by Godmother and seven-time Olympic Medalist, Simone Biles. Biles is a 19-time World Champion and the most decorated American gymnast in U.S. history.

Captain Kate McCue has broken barriers after being named Celebrity Beyond’s captain, the first and only woman to be named captain of a “Mega” cruise ship. Celebrity Beyond’s arrival signifies a new era of cruising for the industry, specifically for Celebrity’s new brand campaign that defines just what a relaxed luxury experience at sea should be. The brand-new vessel’s inaugural season begins with rotating Western and Eastern Caribbean itineraries, with stops at beaches in Grand Cayman and Puerta Plata, luxury hotel-style accommodations, and chic dining experiences.

“I can think of no one better to be the Godmother of this incredible ship than the G.O.A.T. herself – Simone Biles,” said Jason Liberty, President and CEO of the Royal Caribbean Group, the parent company of Celebrity Cruises. “This ship’s beauty, power, and resilience sets the standard by which all others will be measured. Simone’s determination, progressive nature, empowered attitude, and grace in the face of challenges make her such an inspiration to so many around the world.  All of these attributes are why Simone Biles is perfectly suited to watch over Celebrity Beyond’s journey.”

“I’ve been waiting for this day to arrive for a long time and I am ‘Beyond’ excited to be able to share her with our guests. She is the gold standard by which other ships are built and embodies the meaning of relaxed luxury,” said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, Celebrity Cruises President and CEO. “She is ‘FULL’ of wonder and excitement and our guests will undoubtedly feel reconnected to the world around them as they visit new destinations and immerse themselves in culinary experiences and wellness amenities not found anywhere else at sea.”

Celebrity Beyond Naming Ceremony

Simone Biles officially named Celebrity Beyond alongside Celebrity Cruises executives in a ceremony comprised of 2,500 lucky guests and media. The ceremony also featured a live performance from award-winning singer and songwriter, Leona Lewis. Biles follows Reshma Saujani of Girls Who Code and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Malala Yousafzai, who previously named Celebrity Apex and Celebrity Edge. Both women are known for their tireless advocacy of women everywhere and their efforts to inspire all women to reach their full potential.

“It is an honor to be selectedas Beyond’s Godmother and to join such a distinguished group of strong, barrier-breaking women who have been named as Celebrity’s Godmothers before me,” said Simone Biles. “I appreciate the important message this designation holds in recognizing our accomplishments as empowering women, and I am honored to share the stage today with fellow brave, boundary-breaking leaders like Lisa-Lutoff Perlo and Captain Kate McCue.”

Biles is the most decorated American gymnast in history, earning 32 medals from the World Championships and 7 medals from the Olympics. The gymnast is also the first American woman to win seven national all-around titles and the first female gymnast to earn 3 consecutive World All-Around titles. She’s also been featured in lists like TIME’S 100 Most Influential, Forbes 30 Under 30, Ebony Power 100, amongst many others. Biles prides herself in being a role model for all women everywhere by proving women can do anything!

“We are excited to be sailing again Down Under to provide an immersive, premium cruise experience for guests from around the world,” said Gus Antorcha, president, Holland America Line. “Our return to cruise operations in the region also means a positive boost to the local economy with tour and hotel activities, provisioning and port operations.

“The welcome we have received at our Australian port visits has been wonderful, and we thank our local Australia partners for their support as we resume cruising,” added Antorcha.

ISRAEL’S HAIFA PORT SEES BUSINESS LIKE NEVER BEFORE

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 4, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Prior to the pandemic, there was only one local Israeli cruise line sailing from Haifa Port in Israel, making the country less accessible to cruisers and harder for locals to cruise since major cruise lines didn’t operate from Haifa. After the pandemic, Haifa Port has seen a major shift and in 2022, ten major cruise lines are doing turnarounds in Haifa, and they expect more to follow in 2023. Today, cruising in Israel is much more convenient and ship occupancy is at an all-time high.

With so much to offer, tourists are now easily able to experience Israel after cruise lines like MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Windstar began making stops in Haifa. 75-80% of passengers aboard these ships are taking excursions in Haifa and are even able to set up pre- or post-cruise stays for even more time to explore the country. The port is also very close to the vibrant downtown Haifa area. A popular tourist attraction, Baha’i Gardens & Temple, is only a few minutes from the port by car. Now that Israel is so easily accessible to travelers, more people will be able to experience the beauty of the country than ever before!

Amawaterways Opens 2024 River Cruise Reservations With Extended Seasons and New Ships

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 3, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Today, AmaWaterways announced that travelers can now book brand-new itineraries for the company’s 2024 river cruise season. Some of the destinations featured on the 2024 itineraries include Europe, Asia, Egypt, and Africa.

The river cruise line has also announced added rewards for early bookings along with extended seasons on the Rhine, Danube, and Douro rivers, giving guests the ability to save when reserving their spot on their next vacation. River cruising on AmaWaterways offers something for the whole family, including exclusive culinary experiences, customizable excursions, and guided tours.

“With an increased demand for intimate travel experiences, we knew how important it was to our guests, particularly those traveling with a group of friends or family, to confirm their 2024 travel plans and begin anticipating the wonderful, enriching vacation that awaits,” said Kristin Karst, executive vice president and co-founder of AmaWaterways. “Our repeat guests and novice river cruise travelers can save 5%* on balcony staterooms and suites by placing a deposit for their 2024 river cruise by December 31, 2022, and then relax knowing that the itinerary and stateroom of their choice are confirmed, while the full payment is not due until 90 days before departure.”

AmaWaterways’ 2024 itineraries are expected to be popular due on account of the extended seasons on the Douro, Rhine & Danube rivers, a new itinerary on the Saône River through the Burgundy region of France, and the launch of a second ship for the Nile.

Launched in 2021, one of the most popular itineraries from AmaWaterways is the Seven River Journeys cruise, which was the first ever of its kind in the cruise industry. In 2024, AmaWaterways is offering two new journeys featuring 49 nights of cruising. Guests will sail the full length of the Danube, Main, and Rhine rivers and visit 15 different countries while aboard AmaMora, the company’s leading intimate vessel. Another first for AmaWaterways, guests on both expeditions are invited to prolong their explorations into the southern tip of the Danube Delta region that leads to the Black Sea.

Here are some 2024 itineraries from AmaWaterways now open for booking:

France

A new itinerary for 2024, the Flavors of Burgundy itinerary will feature a seven-night cruise through the Saône River between Dijon and Lyon and offer guests the ability to explore the famous and historical culinary region of France. Guests will also have the option of disembarking from their first seven-night cruise aboard AmaCello in Lyon and hopping onto its sister ship, AmaKristina, for an additional seven nights on the Colors of Provence cruise between Lyon and Aries. AmaWaterways is also offering a 10% combination cruise savings for guests on all second subsequent river cruises. The company now offers guests six itineraries in France with the options for pre-and post-cruise stays escorted by cruise managers in popular cities like Barcelona, Paris, and Geneva.

Douro River

AmaWaterways is extending its Portugal river cruising season in 2024 by adding additional sailings from Porto for guests aboard AmaDouro. Guests will experience the fall foliage along the Douro River and can enjoy cruising during the holiday season with the final Christmas departure embarking on December 21, 2024.

Rhine, Main & Moselle Rivers

Guests can experience the beauty of the Rhine cruising season aboard AmaLucia starting on February 11, 2024. AmaWaterways is offering 7, 10, and 11-night cruises along the Rhine, Main, and Moselle rivers with stops in Western and Central Europe. The company will offer ten different itineraries including Vineyards of the Rhine & Moselle, Enchanting Rhine, and Christmas Markets on the Rhine. Guests who book will have the opportunity to explore destinations like France, Switzerland, Germany, and the Netherlands. AmaWaterways is also offering guests the opportunity to extend their stay by adding pre-and post-cruise land packages in destinations like Prague, Zurich, Amsterdam, and Lucerne.

Danube River

The company continues to attract first-time cruise-goers in this region of Europe by featuring nine itineraries offered by six award-winning ships. AmaWaterways’ AmaMagna will offer guests an early start to the river cruise season beginning on February 11, 2024, cruising through Vilshofen and Budapest. In addition, AmaViola lives up to her name with a series of six Celebration of Classical Music: The Danube departures between Budapest, Hungary, and Vienna, Austria. AmaWaterways is also offering six separate holiday departures in December on the five-night Majestic Capitals of the Danube itinerary with stops in Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest. Pre-or post-cruise land packages are also available in Krakow, Poland, and Prague, Czech Republic.

Nile River

After AmaDahlia’s previous successful season, AmaWaterways launch a second ship on the Nile, AmaLilia, beginning on March 4, 2024. Both sister ships will sail the Secrets of Egypt & Nile itinerary, with 11-nights of cruising and land experiences that include a 7-night round trip river cruise from Luxor paired with three nights pre- and one-night post-cruise stays in Cairo. Some land packages paired with this destination include Dubai, Jordan, and Israel.

Dutch and Belgian Waterways

Dutch and Belgian Waterways will explore a variety of towns and historic sites, including famous WWII landmarks. The itinerary includes stops in Antwerp, Brussels, Amsterdam, and Gent. During their journey, guests can enjoy customizable experiences including excursions like visiting the tulip farms in Horn within AmaWaterways’ spring-only Tulip Timesailings to the Roosevelt family home in Veere and full-day tours of Bruges on the Best of Holland & Belgium itineraries.

Mekong River

With a capacity of 124 passengers, AmaWaterways’ AmaDara will set sail along the 12th largest river in the world, the Mekong, featuring itineraries like the Charms of the Mekong and Riches of the Mekong. Both itineraries can also be combined with pre-and post-cruise land packages that feature unique excursions like exploring the ancient ruins of Angkor Wat near Siem Reap, Cambodia, or discovering the popular city centers of Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, Vietnam, and Bangkok, Thailand.

Chobe River

Aboard Zambezi Queen, guests will set sail along Africa’s Chobe River with five separate itineraries to choose from, such as Discover Africa and Stars of South Africa. While aboard, guests can explore destinations like Cape Town’s Table Mountain and Victoria Falls. AmaWaterways’ Africa itineraries will combine the four-night cruise experience with the choice of excursions like wildlife safaris, city stays, or cross-country rail travel.

Colombia

AmaWaterways will reveal additional details regarding 2024 sailings to Colombia in January of 2023. The itineraries will include two new ships cruising on the Magdalena River.

Guests who book their 2024 sailings before December 31, 2022, can enjoy 5% Early Booking Rewards on balcony staterooms and suites on select itineraries. For Christmas Market Cruises, guests can utilize Triple Holiday Savings on select cruises.

We’re just days away from the North American inaugural cruise of the new Celebrity Beyond from Celebrity Cruises and the cruise line is starting to ramp up the hype with a new partnership with NBCUniversal.

Captain Kate McCue appeared on Bravo’s show “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen” at 10pm last night and the taping was actually held on board the ship. Also appearing on the show were captains from the hit show “Below Deck” including Captain Lee Rosbach, Captain Sandy Yawn, Captain Glenn Shepard, Captain Jason Chambers, and Captain Kerry Titheradge.

“It’s such an exciting opportunity to partner with Celebrity Cruises and shoot a very special episode of the show on its new ‘Celebrity Beyond’ ship,” said Andy Cohen, Host and Executive Producer, Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. “I mean, I cannot think of a more iconic way to celebrate and bring to life the spirit of our very own, Bravo’s Below Deck – than by channeling my inner Captain at sea!”

The new partnership between Celebrity Cruises and NBCUniversal came about as both companies were seeking to work with worldwide and leading brands.

With Celebrity Cruises, NBCU and Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen – we’re delivering our fans a new, entertaining experience like never before.”

The popularity of the Bravo show and the hype surrounding the newest ship from Celebrity Cruises made the partnership an attractive one for the cruise line.

“The partnership opportunity with NBCUniversal and Bravo was meant to be from the start. We both wanted to do something that hadn’t been done on a cruise ship before, so using our newest ship, Celebrity Beyond, as the backdrop, filming Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen on our ship was the perfect opportunity,” said Celebrity Cruises’ Chief Marketing Officer Michael Scheiner. “Leveraging the fanfare of the show along with our own content to use in advertising across NBCUniversal really gives us a great opportunity to market our brand.”

What’s it Like to Take a Repositioning Cruise on an Expedition Ship?

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 1, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

It seems like expedition cruising is at the top of everyone’s cruise bucket list these days. New ships with advanced technology and features make getting to some of the world’s most remote locales a breeze. However, just like any vessel, expedition cruise ships relocate around the world for different seasons. Instead of the icy shores of Antarctica or the misty glacier bays of Alaska, guests on board repositioning expedition ships will still enjoy plenty of adventure, just in a slightly different form.

For American Queen Voyages, expedition cruising is a new venture, but after spending two weeks on board their new charter vessel Ocean Victory as it repositioned from its summer home in Alaska to its winter home in Antarctica, it’s clear no matter where you sail, adventure will follow. From San Diego to Costa Rica, Ocean Victory provided the comforts and amenities of a luxury line with the wildlife and enrichment you’d expect from an expedition cruise.

A highlight of the voyage came in the first few days when a duo of Peregrine Falcons decided to make the ship as a home base of sorts as they used their incredible speed and agility to catch other birds and use guest balconies as their dining room. When the birds perched themselves on balcony railings, guests were able to get a good look at the lethal talons and gorgeous feather patterns. Guillaume, the bird expert on the adventure staff, was quick to identify the species and was on hand to check out and give context to photos and videos taken by guests.

You never know what you’ll see on an expedition cruise! The 186-guest, 342 foot adventure vessel is not only sleek and stylish thanks to the prominent X-Bow front, but it also comes complete with all the toys and tools necessary to really dive deeper into the exploration aspect of each sailing. From the going-ashore staging area known as the mud room to the microscopes in the Observation Lounge, Ocean Victory comes ready-made for exploration and adventure.

While it’s very cool to see a pod of dolphins playing in the wake as you cruise along, it’s even cooler when standing on Ocean Victory’s wildlife platforms which fold down from the forward hull of the ship. From just a few feet above the water, guests get an up close look at the sea life breaching the waves and a very unique view of the X-Bow as it slices through the surf.

From the wildlife surrounding the ship to the shore excursions off of it, American Queen Voyages made sure to put expedition at the forefront. Guests who disembarked had the option to explore on their own, enjoy the cruise line’s included curated excursions or book an excursion like deep sea fishing, chocolate making or touring Mayan ruins along Mexico’s border with Guatemala. Led by the experienced guides and naturalists on board, the excursions add a layer of enrichment to the fun, allowing guests to expand their knowledge while also fully enjoying the excitement that comes with exploring someplace new.

For ports of call without a pier or place to dock, the fleet of zodiac boats onboard served as the tenders, adding another layer of adventure to the experience. In Playas Del Coco, Costa Rica, the zodiacs ferried guests directly on to the dark, volcanic sand beach in what they called a “wet landing”.

Don’t Skip the Daily Lectures

Daily lectures on nearly anything and everything were popular with guests and really helped get the most out of the experience. Lectures ranged from the helpful, like tips and tricks for taking the best photos with a cell phone, to the in-depth and scientific, like how weather patterns and ocean flows affect the type and size of waves found lapping against the shoreline. There’s also a daily debrief before dinner each evening with a recap of the day’s events as well as a preview of what to expect the next day. Guides gave an overview of where the ship would be, the excursions available and any other information, like if it was a tender port, for example, guests may need to enjoy the day to the fullest.

Meal times offered a different kind of adventure, a culinary one, as the dishes prepared by the galley spanned a number of regions and flavors. One aspect of dining on board Ocean Victory that guests seemed to enjoy the most was the preview of each dish that evening found on a sidebar as guests entered the dining room. From the starters all the way to dessert, guests could visualize and craft their perfect meal before even sitting down at a table in the main dining room.

Another highlight of each sailing on board Ocean Victory is a deck barbecue with items hot off the grill like ribs, roasted chicken, and even a full pig roast with various barbecue sauces for each. Also available during the once-a-sailing deck barbecue were burgers, sausages, a full salad bar, roasted vegetables and fresh breads. The sushi lunch another day was also notable as the quality and freshness rivaled any eatery you’d find on land or at sea.

So, can you take a repositioning cruise on an expedition cruise ship? The answer is a resounding YES. When under operation by American Queen Voyages, Ocean Victory delights all the senses and brings plenty of adventure to guests while in port or at sea.

If you’re looking to try expedition cruising for your next vacation, a repositioning cruise certainly needs to be on your list of bucket list itineraries!

written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Today, a world-leading luxury beauty retailer, L’OCCITANE has announced the grand opening of its brand-new spa on Atlas Ocean Voyages’ brand-new cruise ship, World Traveller.

Atlas Ocean Voyages’ new, modern, and all-inclusive yacht-style ship can accommodate up to 200 guests and offers passengers personalized services and unique experiences while traveling to remote destinations all around the world.

SeaSpa by L’OCCITANE will offer guests a wide range of holistic, innovative, and unique treatments using L’OCCITANE en Province’s signature and effective beauty products. Celebrating the Provençal art de vivre, L’OCCITANE’s products are created at the company’s own independent laboratories, where they develop and produce treatments that highlight organic ingredients. L’OCCITANE’s commitment to utilizing organic and natural ingredients is a major key to the company’s success in the beauty industry.

The SeaSpa will provide guests with a diverse spa menu with an array of customizable treatments aboard the over 900 square-foot modern onboard spa. The nautical, blue-themed wellness zone has a welcoming atmosphere and features ocean-view loungers, a Serenity Lounge, and two separate treatment rooms. SeaSpa also includes an infrared sauna, two hot tubs, an exterior pool, a fitness studio, a deck solarium, a running track, and much more.

Passengers aboard the brand-new World Traveller wanting to experience the new spa will begin their journey with a soothing Welcome Ritual, followed by a customizable treatment to engage all the five senses, while soothing music plays for a calming atmosphere. Spa guests can also enjoy herbal teas inspired by Provençal traditions meant to cleanse the pallet and promote ultimate relaxation. Immortelle Divine Secret, one of the most effective and soothing treatments offered by SeaSpa, uses products from the award-winning Immortelle skincare range by L’OCCITANE en Provence. Grown in Corsica, the Immortelle flowers are packed with active molecules that contain effective anti-aging properties. L’OCCITANE also prides itself in using only 100% traceable and organic Immortelle essential oils for all treatments offered by the company.

This 90-minute anti-aging facial is targeted at those who experience deep wrinkles & lines and aims to smooth and firm texture, along with tackling age spots and uneven skin tones. The facial also combats skin-slackening of the face, neck, and décolleté area using lifting and contouring massage techniques combined with essential oils.

L’OCCITANE en Provence Aromachology toiletries will also be available in all of the bathrooms of the staterooms aboard World Traveller on the ship’s three decks.

Environmental Features on World Traveller

Featuring the most advanced waste management system in the cruise industry, World Traveller is significantly impacting the environment and paving the way for a greener and more eco-friendly way to cruise. This hybrid hydro-jet propulsion system allows the ship to cruise silently up to five knots, minimizing the underwater nose that can negatively impact the marine life below the surface. The GPS-based Dynamic Position System allows the vessel to avoid the need to drop an anchor, which also prevents potential damage to the ocean floor.

James Rodriguez, president, and CEO of Atlas Ocean Voyages said: “We are proud to bring L’OCCITANE en Provence signature treatments to our World Traveller guests. At Atlas, we are keenly aware of the world’s fragile ecosystem. Our two companies share a strong commitment to sustainability.”

Kelly Clarkson and Norwegian Cruise Line Celebrate 100 Winning Educators

by Julie Bouchner November 1, 2022
written by Julie Bouchner

To show appreciation to educators across the United States and Canada, Norwegian Cruise Line welcomed 100 winning teachers on a free cruise aboard the all-new Norwegian Prima for the ship’s first-ever voyage from Galveston, Texas. To top off the free cruise experience, NCL surprised guests aboard the ship with an exclusive concert by GRAMMY Award-winning artist Kelly Clarkson.

Each year, Norwegian Cruise Line honors and celebrates devoted educators across the United States and Canada for their Norwegian Giving Joy campaign. During the event aboard the Norwegian Prima, 100 educators were recognized and awarded a free cruise, and nearly $170,000 was donated to schools and teachers around the country. Special guests that attended the award celebration included NCL President and CEO Harry Sommer, Norwegian Bliss Godfather and American radio personality and host Elvis Duran, and superstar and godmother to the Norwegian Encore, Kelly Clarkson.

“Norwegian Prima‘s debut in Galveston was extra special,” said Harry Sommer, president and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line. “We really did it big…and what better place to do it big than in Texas. We introduced our new, magnificent ship to a market new to NCL, we welcomed 100 unbelievably deserving teachers to experience her, awarded the Grand Prize winners with nearly $40,000 in surprise prize money in addition to a donation for their school – and we put on an unforgettable celebration with two of our NCL godparents, Elvis Duran and Kelly Clarkson.”

At the end of the Giving Joy Award Ceremony, Sommer revealed the top three Grand Prize winners who received the most votes, awarding them donations for their schools.

Congratulations to the following educators:

  • Patricia Hosmer from Bayonne High School in Bayonne, New Jersey
  • Theresa Schrager from Falcon Cove Middle School, Florida
  • Anthony Stirpe from New Rochelle High School in New Rochelle, New York.

Each Grand Prize winner received donations to their schools and nearly $40,000 in prize money from Norwegian Cruise Line partners who were inspired by the annual Giving Joy program.

Background of the Giving Joy program

  • The Giving Joy program was designed to connect travel and education, while recognizing teachers for their unwavering dedication to inspiring students every day.
  • Since 2019, Giving Joy has awarded 230 teachers from across the world with free cruises and donations of over 350,000 to schools and educators.

“It was such an honor to celebrate the 100 deserving winners of Norwegian’s Giving Joy program at Norwegian Prima’s inaugural sailing, which embarked from my home state of Texas!” said Clarkson. “Teachers are our true everyday unsung heroes, and they play an integral role in our society, not only shaping the future of their students, but the future of their communities as well. I couldn’t miss the opportunity to participate in this program and give a special performance before they set sail on the trip of a lifetime!

What a day in Galveston yesterday with @CruiseNorwegian! I hit the stage (for the first time in a long time) to celebrate our #NCLGivingJoy educators onboard #NorwegianPrima… and then raced our top winners on the speedway. #CruiseNorwegian 🏁 pic.twitter.com/ZCw0GUgsNg

Disney Cruise Line’s New Ship Brings Cinderella’s Story to Sea

by Jason Leppert October 31, 2022
written by Jason Leppert

Stepping aboard Disney Cruise Line’s brand new Disney Wish, cast members still welcome families by enthusiastically announcing their surname in the triple-decker atrium, but the Grand Hall looks rather different this time around. Taking a detour from the Golden Age of Travel and the alternating art deco and art nouveau looks of Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream, and Disney Fantasy before, Wish emphasizes its overall theme of “enchantment” with a more regal aesthetic in the form of a castle at sea.

The approach is actually very appropriate for Disney as the company’s parks have always featured a so-called “weenie” — Walt’s own term for the architectural icon that draws guests in. So, like Epcot’s Spaceship Earth geodesic sphere or Magic Kingdom’s Cinderella Castle, the Grand Hall serves as the ship’s social hub, anchored by a bronze statue of Cinderella herself.

New Faces in Familiar Places

From that Grand Hall, the ship’s flow is recognizable but also a departure. One of three rotational dining rooms — the fresh 1923, a handsome bistro-like homage to old Hollywood — is immediately astern of the atrium with the other two stacked above. Particularly convenient to both children and adults, though, is the close proximity, respectively, to Disney’s Oceaneer Club and the first of many bars, lounges, and shops (with logo items naturally, and more luxury brand names than ever before on Disney).

After checking in, kids can swiftly take a spiral slide from the Grand Hall down a deck to the newly located children’s club. The likes of “It’s a Small World” Nursery, Mickey & Minnie Captain’s Deck, Fairytale Hall, and Marvel Super Hero Academy will be familiar, but all-new is the Walt Disney Imagineering Lab, a hands-on space emphasizing creative projects combined with STEM-style experimentation. The craft and dining hall remains, with the addition of The Ride Studio, where budding designers can craft and video-test their own attractions just like Disney’s namesake creative team. And Star Wars: Cargo Bay is the latest take on the film franchise’s delightful grunge, complete with droid parts, living and “breathing” creatures, and fun meet-and-greet opportunities.

It just so happens that Cargo Bay is right below the highly anticipated Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge, set aside for adults in the evening (and all ages during the day) to enjoy the more refined side of the galaxy. As a successor to the Skyline bar on previous ships, animated “views” to the outside now show landscapes of Endor, Coruscant, and many more planets as Starspeeders cruise by and patrons imbibe. Rather than a single adult district, additional bars like The Bayou (themed to The Princess and the Frog) are more evenly spread around the ship, offering easier access and not hidden away.

Restaurant Surprises

For complimentary dining, Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure and Worlds of Marvel round out the trio of main restaurants. The former is the ship’s dinner theater concept celebrating the engagement of Princess Anna and Kristoff. An audio-animatronic Olaf is super impressive as he visits diners at their tables, but the ever-wandering Oaken hilariously singing a europop rendition of “Let It Go” instead of Queen Elsa might just take the cake.

Meanwhile, the expanded menu for Palo Steakhouse’s Italian cuisine plus premium cuts is superb for adult specialty dining. Also appetizing is Enchanté by Chef Arnaud Lallement — both elegantly inspired by the enchanted objects of Beauty and the Beast.

On the pool deck, the Marceline Market buffet has been dialed in as more of an urban food hall with individual stations, and Mickey and Friends Festival of Foods is a terrific expansion of the grill and pizzeria, adding excellent barbecue and cantina offerings. Included soft-serve is available here, but for premium ice creams, gelato, and other treats, Inside Out: Joyful Sweets is a worthwhile alternative.

Making a Splash

Speaking of the pool, two large family pools have been replaced by seven smaller ones — six centrally spread out over terraced levels and a final, more secluded ….

Royal Caribbean Group Brings Art and Culture To New Galveston Terminal

by Julie Bouchner October 28, 2022
written by Julie Bouchner

The new cruise terminal at the Port of Galveston is adding a pop of art and culture to welcome guests as they embark on their cruise vacation. With the help of the local Galveston, Texas community, Royal Caribbean and the Galveston Beach Trio group have worked together to design a Texas-based Grad Oldham Sculpture opening this November.

“Our passion lies in sharing the world’s incredible destinations with our guests, allowing them to experience cultures from around the world, including the places from which their travels begin,” said Joshua Carroll, Vice President of Destination Development of Royal Caribbean Group. “Showcasing the history and culture of Galveston was our top priority in establishing this art installation in our new terminal, and we’re thrilled to partner with Brad Oldham Sculpture to bring this vision to life.”

The husband-and-wife team, Brad Oldham and Christy Coltrin were chosen for the job, and the Brad Oldham Sculpture was selected to be the piece of art. Together, Brad and Christy specialize in narrative-based sculpture to evoke the spirit and heart of different locations.

RELATED: RESERVATIONS ARE OPEN FOR ROYAL CARIBBEAN’S ICON OF THE SEAS

“When we started working on the design concepts for a placemaking sculpture at Royal Caribbean’s new cruise terminal in Galveston, we first talked about our favorite family vacations,” said Brad Oldham. “Some of our best memories are from traveling together. We are honored to create a permanent installation that cultivates the vacation vibe with an approachable music theme using native animals to make up the band. It is exciting to think that the Galveston Beach Trio may make it into family vacation pictures to capture the special time together.

The sculpture is forged in stainless steel and lost-wax bronze, honoring the rich musical heritage of musicians like Galveston-native and Grammy Award-winning bass-baritone singer and songwriter Barry White, pianist Joyce Fields, and guitarist Joe Pena.

“Galveston is particularly meaningful to me because my grandfather was a 1925 graduate of Ball High School before attending Texas A&M University,” said Christy Coltrin. “He had a private architecture practice in Galveston in the 1940s. I think that he would like to know that his granddaughter helped create a sculpture celebrating his hometown.”

Early this year, Royal Caribbean announced an initiative: Royal Caribbean Group’s Blue Green Promise to protect the ocean it sails and to inspire future generations to empower ocean communities. Royal Caribbean will continue to engage with the Galveston community and incorporate local arts and culture into its new terminal operations.

Travelers vacationing on Royal Caribbean International cruise in Galveston will begin to enjoy the Brad Oldham Sculpture when the new terminal opens on Nov. 9, 2022.
