Cruising With Disabilities: Tips Every Cruiser Should Know

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 14, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

One of the cruise and travel industry’s biggest advocates for accessibility is the Special Needs Group, a medical equipment and supply company that works as the leading global provider of wheelchair, scooter, oxygen and other special needs equipment rentals on board cruise ships.

Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine Founder and Editor-in-Chief Bill Panoff met up with Special Needs Group CEO Andrew Garnett to check out some of the equipment available to cruisers to help them get the most out of their cruise vacation. The first item was one of the lightest wheelchairs available at only 19 pounds in total with removable wheels bringing the weight to an even smaller 13 pounds. Traditional wheelchairs can weigh around fifty pounds so the new design from Special Needs Group is a significant reduction and can help cruisers who struggle with mobility get their chair from place to place much easier.

RELATED: SPECIAL NEEDS GROUP CONTINUES IMPROVING CRUISE ACCESSIBILITY

The company also provides a newly designed mobility scooter that’s a fraction of the weight of a traditional scooter. Usually over 100 pounds, scooters can be a hassle. Special Needs Group’s design drops the weight to 37 pounds and has a unique foldable design for easier storage!

The best part is Special Needs Group can be found in over 70 countries so no matter where you’re cruising, you’re never far from the help you need to get around! Check out the full video with Andrew Garnett and let us know in the comments if you’ve tried any of the products!

Marina da Horta

The Legend Behind Horta’s Remarkable Maritime Painting Collection

by Pamela and Gary Baker November 11, 2022
written by Pamela and Gary Baker

Superstition bites deep in Horta. And a stroll through this port town’s marina confirms that. A gigantic horseshoe shaped stone wall surrounding the tranquil blue water, dotted with yachts, serves as a visual testament to superstitious travelers who have left their short colorful stories painted on the concrete walls and piers of this harbor. Located in the vibrant Marina da Horta on Azores Island of Faial is the largest maritime painting collection in the world.

Horta’s colorful marina is the main harbor of the Azores and the fourth most visited marina in the world. Constituted by nine (9) islands of volcanic origin, the Azores archipelago spreads over 600 kilometers in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Situated between Europe and America, the Azores have been a natural stopping place of magic and mystery for sea travelers over the ages. Since the early 18th century, the town’s harbor has historically served as anchorage for whaling ships, clippers and yachts. The luxurious yacht, “Cleopatra’s Barge,” the first American pleasure craft to sail across the Atlantic, tied up at Horta in 1817.

Horta is regarded as the yachting capitol of the Azores. It welcomes nearly 1,500 boats each year. Its popular marina has berths for 300 yachts. The town’s cultural heritage draws on this traditional link between land and sea where corsairs, smugglers and pirates once anchored.

Marine Art in the Azores

This marine art collection is well known to sailors and visitors to this decorated marina. Haunted, even today, by the fear of the sea, sailors are transformed into painters. Accordingly, visiting crews whose ships come to Horta must leave a painting of their boat on the breakwater so that their ship will arrive safely at its next destination. Some who haven’t left a representation of their ship have suffered shipwrecks and other nautical disasters.

The example of the “Ariadne” serves as a warning for those who don’t comply with the superstition and, according to Azorean sea lore, may have been the beginning of the legend. This two-masted ketch wintered in Horta, but once it left the harbor, it vanished at sea in the Spring of 1967. Neither captain nor crew left any sign on the breakwater or piers.

I step out on the harbor sidewalk and realize I have flown 4,766 miles to Horta to explore this legend based on a tip from a tall ship sailor I met in the Pacific Northwest. As I look around, a kaleidoscope of paintings grasps my view. Some are large, others are small, some round or square, painted in multicolors of red, white, blue and green. Each with different designs and phrases that cover the walkway and walls. Some are geometric in shape with astral or zodiac signs, some in the shape of swans, birds and sea dragons, other images depict mermaids, whales and puffins. One in particular strikes me as unique. In the center of the painting in the large graceful shape of the letter “S” is a design with the head of a swan that morphs at the end into a whale’s body. A whimsical cat or monkey pops up occasionally, as I make my way among them. I’m intrigued by the use of a cat’s image, particularly a black one, as it doesn’t immediately seem related to sea travel. Perhaps it represents an onboard pet or a symbol of good luck or comfort to the sailors. New paintings are painted over old ones. Drawn by hand, many look like professional art work, others the rudimentary work of school kids. Like imaginative pictures in a child’s storybook, the paintings number in the hundreds. Each, however, serves to ward off potential shipwrecks and assure a continued safe voyage.

Artists at Work

Walking along the concrete pier, I encounter sailors, a captain and his crew drawing a design to represent their boat. When I ask what they are doing, in part, they reply by explaining the superstition but, in the same breath, their gratitude for the sanctity of a safe harbor to make repairs. The captain says to me, “My experienced crew saved my boat from complete disaster at sea.” Struck by a rogue wave after leaving the Caribbean, at a point of no return in their voyage, their boat almost capsized and took on water before righting itself. With water damage to some electrical communication and technical navigation equipment, they managed to limp to mid-Atlantic safety at Horta. One of the sailors named Pat, wearing a spandex knee brace, stops his design work to show me his bruises.

On their hands and knees, almost supplicant, both captain and crew diligently work to leave their mark so nothing more would happen to them on the remainder of their voyage to the Mediterranean. I watch intently while the crew draws design lines and chooses paint colors. A brisk wind begins to blow across the marina. In their empty boat, lashed together with others waiting for replacement parts, the thin steel mast lines scream in the wind, as if begging for their sails to be raised on them. Wounded, like their boat, the sailors work to complete their task, driven by both anxiety and urgency.

I ran into them a day later on a slow, relaxing ferry ride to nearby Pico Island. Captain and crew seemed heartened by having completed their painting and optimistic that, according to superstition, they will sail on without mishap as soon as replacement parts arrive. Their completed painting, a colorful and nearly exact replica of the face of the on-deck compass they used, navigating the open sea to reach the marina, provides another vivid testament to the power of superstition among sea travelers to Horta. The sanctity of the marina, always tranquil with a mildly warm subtropical climate, can ease sailors’ fears and boat troubles, only if they are willing to leave their mark on the walls and piers of this timeless mid-Atlantic anchorage.

Royal Caribbean International’s new $125 million cruise terminal in Galveston

Royal Caribbean Opens New Cruise Terminal in Galveston, TX

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 10, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

You know the saying; everything is bigger in Texas and that couldn’t be more true today!

Royal Caribbean International’s brand-new $125 million cruise terminal opened its doors today in Galveston, Texas, welcoming the state’s largest cruise ship ever to call, Allure of the Seas. The cruise line and Galveston’s relationship is by no means new, with a successful Royal Caribbean partnership dating back more than 20 years. Royal Caribbean International held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Port of Galveston to celebrate the opening and the Texas debut of its Oasis Class.

Royal Caribbean executives, government, port officials, and partners celebrated the milestone achievement, including U.S. representative Randy Weber, Federal Commissioner Louis Sola, Mayor Craig Brown, Royal Caribbean International President & CEO Michael Bayley, and Port Director Rodger Rees. With the introduction of the Oasis Class, it is estimated that the new terminal will welcome as many as 630,000 vacationers each year.

“We are thrilled to take family vacations to a whole new level in Texas. Our new, 161,334-square-foot terminal opens up a world of vacation possibilities for families in the Southwest,” said Michael Bayley, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean International. “Now our unmatched Oasis Class ships, known as the best family vacations in the industry, can set sail from Galveston. Allure of the Seas is just the beginning, and we thank the Port of Galveston, Ceres and all the teams involved for making this bold vision a reality.”

Royal Caribbean’s Galveston hub was built with a ground-breaking sustainable design. The terminal will break even more new ground as the first LEED Zero Energy facility in the world, generating 100% of the energy it needs through onsite solar panels. From the start of construction, the design strategies used to construct the terminal were influenced by Royal Caribbean’s holistic environmental goals and their commitment to developing more sustainable infrastructures.

“This new cruise terminal is a gamechanger for the port and the region,” said Rodger Rees, Port Director, Port of Galveston. “This $125 million investment, in collaboration with Royal Caribbean, the port and Ceres, is expected to bring 800 new jobs, $1.4 billion in local business services revenue, $5.6 million in state and local taxes, and incredible business development opportunities. And, of course, Allure of the Seas means more cruising adventures for our Texas cruise guests.”

The Galveston Beach Trio, a dynamic art sculpture by Texas-based artists, Brad Oldham and Christy Coltrin of Brad Oldham Sculpture, will welcome cruise-goers to the Port of Galveston. Royal Caribbean selected the husband-and-wife team for their creative concept inspired by Galveston’s rich musical roots, which includes the likes of Galveston-native and Grammy Award-winning, bass-baritone singer and songwriter Barry White. The stainless steel and lost-wax bronze sculpture is the perfect way to mark the beginning of a vacation!

Allure of the Seas will set sail for the first time from the new homeport on Sunday, November 13. The Oasis Class ship has tons of amenities and activities for the whole family to enjoy, including tons of restaurants, nightlife, and entertainment across seven signature neighborhoods. A few things guests can look forward to while exploring these signature neighborhoods are an open-air Central Park with thousands of real plants, a Boardwalk neighborhood filled with tons of games and activities, and a one-of-a-kind AquaTheater entertainment venue featuring shows with acrobats, high divers, aerialists and more. Guests can also enjoy a nine-story-high zip line, two FlowRider surf simulators, rock climbing, ice skating, and original productions that span across four separate stages.

The ship has plenty of eateries for guests to refuel with over 30 restaurants, bars, and lounges that serve a variety of different cuisines like Italian classics at Giovanni’s Table, American steaks at Chops Grille, and fresh sushi and hibachi at Izumi. Quintessential Quito in 48 Hours

by Steve Leland November 10, 2022
written by Steve Leland

Photo: Illa Experience Hotel

If you enjoy the charm of old cities, the traditions of South American colonial culture and unfettered authenticity, Quito, Ecuador is your kind of place. Built on the foundations of an ancient Inca settlement, this capital city oozes old world charisma. Perched high atop Panacillo Hill, the giant winged statue of the Virgin gazes down at the colorful neighborhoods, cathedrals and markets that divulge a marvelous portrait of Ecuadorian life.

With only 48 hours to experience the city prior to a cruise on the brand new KonTiki Wayra out of Manta on the Ecuadorian Coast, we went full throttle to explore everything possible. Although the city itself extends over 80 kilometers in length yet only 5 kilometers in width, the heart and soul of Quito beats in its Old Town.

A Top Hotel in Quito

Cities like Quito are full of hotels that range from small inns to large hotel chain properties but the charm of Illa Experience Hotel is not to be missed. This former 17th century mansion has recently been reimagined and crafted into a 10 room boutique-chic hotel with historic heritage and authenticity fully intact.

As the name implies special experiences are presented each day by craftsmen demonstrating the art of Panama Hat weaving, watercoloring, food cooking and wood burning artists. The small intimate restaurant is artistically managed by a spectacular chef offering a la carte options as well as Michelin style tasting menus.

The hotel is positioned on a secluded side street yet enjoys a coveted position in the center of Quito’s Old Town, providing convenient access for pedestrian exploration of the cobblestone streets that dissect the colorful neighborhoods of San Marcos and San Juan. Sauntering through these quaint hillside neighborhoods reveals architectural surprises, art studios, small shops and cafes scattered amidst historical villas and individual homes.

Best Cathedrals in Quito

As in all South American cities, it should come as no surprise that a impressive cathedrals top the list of sites to see and Quito is no exception with a spectacular trio of religious venues. The impressive Basilica del Voto Nacional is an architectural marvel and is the largest neo-gothic basilica in the Americas. Its stained glass rose windows paint a portrait of color alongside the massive ceiling arches. The twin towers at the main entrance bear a close resemblance to those of Norte Dame in Paris.

All that glitters may not be gold but that is certainly not the case in the Jesuit, Iglesia De La Compania. Behind its facade of carved volcanic stone is the central nave’s artistic plethora of ostentatious gold leaf. The intricate design of the pulpit contains 250 cherubim faces and figures of saints along with Christ the Redeemer. The Convent of San Francisco holds a treasure trove of art and sculpture with deep historic value.

Palacio Arzobispal, adjacent to the Plaza of Independencia is a magnificent building graced by columns and inner patios with wooden balconies. Open space piazzas and markets bring the color of vibrant Ecuadorian life to center stage throughout the city.

The Inti Nan Museum

Speaking of center stage no visit to Quito would be complete without feeding that primal urge for a cheesy touristic requisite of having your photo taken straddling the Equator at 0 degrees latitude.  The Inti Nan Museum is the place to start with a quirky guided tour along the iconic line.  Witness the contrasts of Northern and Southern Hemisphere effects through assorted presentations. The nearby Ciudad Mital del Mundo is a complex of shops and cafes that can be viewed from the top of the monument related to the equatorial designation.

RELATED: 7 DAYS IN THE GALAPAGOS WITH HURTIGRUTEN

The gastronomic pulse of the city can be traced to the country’s indigenous roots as well as the introduction of modern culinary excellence in international tastes. Ecuadorian cuisine centers around locally sourced ingredients with exotic fruits and vegetable in plentiful supply. While the nearby Amazon River and Atlantic Ocean vie for seafood honorable mention, pork and chicken cater to carnivorous appetites. But it’s a cute little critter that defines Ecuador’s intrepid dish of delight. Cuy, commonly known as guinea pig is the one menu item that claims its place on the fringe of endemic tastes. As a general rule, cuy is roasted rotisserie style over open coals but can also be served smoked or in stew like form. I’ll leave judgement up to you as to its redeeming culinary value!

Shopping takes a back seat to sightseeing but there opportunities to buy kitschy llama figurines, woven shawls and blankets but it’s the hand crafted Panama Hats that are worthy contenders for souvenir bragging rights back home. One notable advantage of travel in Ecuador is that their monetary unit is the American dollar avoiding complicated currency calculations.

Quito expresses itself with self respect for its heritage and culture yet welcomes visitors with open arms. Hospitality workers in hotels , cafes and shops always greet with a smile and English is widely spoken. Street hustle is rare and visitors can walk freely without feeling uncomfortable in strange surroundings. Whether it’s a visit prior to a Galapagos cruise or the new KonTiki Expeditions’ coastal cruise, adding on a few days pre or post is a consideration to be taken.

Holland America Line Launches New “De Lijn” Gin for 150th Anniversary

by Porthole Cruise and Travel November 9, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Gin has been a staple spirit in Holland America Line’s history dating way back to the company’s origination. To pay tribute to that long 150-year tradition, the cruise line is launching a new and exclusive label of gin on board ships fleet-wide. Honoring Holland America Line’s roots, a bottle of the new exclusive spirit ‘De Lijn’ is decorated with a label boasting the name in Dutch orange and accented with drawings of blue juniper berries. The berries were drawn with a style that Holland America Line has coined as Modern Delft, a homage to the iconic blue and white of Dutch Delftware.

De Lijn gin is crafted with a blend of Dutch-inspired botanicals, including orange, rose, elderberry, lemon verbena, raspberry, lemon, and juniper. Each botanical is cold distilled separately for a distinct and delicious flavor. The result of the carefully crafted spirit is a made-in-America premium gin, inspired by the Netherlands and crafted exclusively for Holland America Line.

“Gin often carries characteristics of its geography, and we wanted to produce a blend that not only captured our Dutch heritage, but also used botanicals in a modern way to make it unique to our brand,” said Anthony Stice, vice president of dining and beverage operations for Holland America Line. “We call it a ‘Nieuw’ Western Gin, our take on the fast-growing New Western Dry Gin category; we selected a bright and floral profile, finishing it slightly over-proofed, making it ideal for mixing cocktails. This is Holland America Line’s first produced spirit, and we’re excited to see our guests’ reaction.”

To celebrate the launch of De Lijn, Holland America Line will feature the spirit in three brand-new 150th Anniversary cocktails:

“Dutch 150”– A twist on a French 75 made with De Lijn gin, lemon juice, and sparkling wine

“150th Martini”– A classic martini made with De Lijn gin and Noilly Pratt Dry Vermouth

“De Lijn Gin and Tonic”– A cocktail exclusively prepared table-side in the Pinnacle Grill specialty restaurant. In addition to De Lijn Gin and Fever Tree Premium Indian Tonic, the signature cocktail blends a flavorful assortment of seasonal botanicals including juniper berries, peppercorns, star anise, verbena, mint, and expressed citrus.

Holland America Line’s ‘De Lijn’ gin will be available in all bars and lounges fleet-wide as a gin of choice or in one of the special cocktails beginning in November 2022. Bottles of the new premium spirit will also be available for purchase in all shipboard shops.

Hurtigruten Marks 20 Years of Antarctica Sailings With New Photo Set of First Voyage

by Julie Bouchner November 9, 2022
written by Julie Bouchner
Hurtigruten Expeditions has made their name sailing Antarctic waters for the last 20 years and to honor those sailings, the expedition cruise line shared a series of never-before-seen photos captured from the first Antarctica voyages aboard MS Nordnorge from Ushuaia, Argentina, on November 8, 2002. The behind-the-scenes photos show wild penguins, images aboard the fleet, and crew and guests.

Canadian photographer and explorer Dr. John Chardine captured the 2002 images aboard the Hurtigruten Expeditions. During this sailing, Chardine joined the sailing as an expedition staff member. After years of traveling the world, Chardine still thinks back about the 2002 expedition and the memories he made aboard.

“I remember a few days in the sailing seeing my first wild penguin the water near the South Shetland Islands, it’s a memory that stays with me to this day. Our first landing was on Half Moon Island, where we saw staggering rock formations and a colony of Chinstrap Penguins, who very much had the run of the place, said Dr. John Chardine. “Over the past 20 years, I’ve been fortunate enough to come back to this wild and frozen continent almost every year between 2002and 2018 on Hurtigruten’s expedition voyages.”

MS Nordnorge 2002 Sailing Facts

• The fleet sailed South from the Norwegian coast.
• The ship was completed in 1997 by Kværner Kleven in Ulsteinvik, Norway, as a sister ship to MS Polarlys and MS Nordkapp
• Capacity of 597 people
• The ship was refurbished in 2016 and now features a modern, Arctic-inspired interior.

“We’re incredibly proud of our expedition cruising heritage, after looking through these photos for the first time it really makes this milestone moment even more special,” says Asta Lassen, Hurtigruten Expeditions CEO. “As we look to the future it’s clearer than ever that sustainability must be at the heart of everything we do. Our team are already rising to this challenge – from pioneering greener technology to partnering with more Citizen Science research projects and continuing to inspire action across the industry. We know that sustainable travel isn’t something we can do alone, we need everyone in our industry to work together for a greener future.”

Guests and crew aboard Hurtigruten Expeditions have witnessed the impact of climate change first-hand while traveling to Antarctica for the last two decades.

“It’s such a huge privilege to experience Antarctica with my own eyes, and we know that our guests return home as true ambassadors for this extraordinary place,” continues Chardine. “I always see something new or unexpected on these expeditions but there are very noticeable changes, such as the declining Chinstrap Penguin populations, happening to this majestic part of the world as a result of global warming.”

Virgin Voyages has set the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people dressed as merpeople! On November 4, 2022, 457 sailors traveling aboard Virgin Voyages’ Valiant Lady’s MerMaiden voyage gathered together at the Beach Club in Bimini dressed in their fins to help set the record! The brand officially broke the previous record of 378 merpeople set in the United Kingdom in June 2022.

“What a fantastic time,” said Virgin Voyages’ CEO, Tom McAlpin. “Our Sailors really showed up and supported this fun and exciting world record attempt that ties into this legendary brand. Each of our ships have a mermaid that guides our Sailors on their journeys, so what better way to celebrate another brand milestone than in sunny Bimini with so many of our Sailors tapping into their mermaid personas.”

Once the cruisers reached the world record, all attendees joined in for a group photo and will receive a digital certificate to showcase their achievement.

MerMaiden Event Details:

  • Guests were invited to join in on the attempt to break the world record
  • There was a mermaid beauty pageant located aboard and at the Beach Club at Bimini.
  • Once the cruise line beat the world recorded, they celebrated with live music, shelfies, and champagne.

From the Readers: Family Vacation? Mardi Gras!

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine November 8, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Porthole Cruise and Travel Reader Mark Hollingsworth and family set sail with Carnival Cruise Line onboard Mardi Gras and he shared his experience with us! Have you cruised on Mardi Gras? Let us know what you thought in the comments!

No, not that Mardi Gras. That’s only once a year in New Orleans. Our family of four found a Mardi Gras that’s open year-round and appealing to all ages. It’s Carnival’s newest, biggest, and most innovative ship in its fleet. We experienced not only The Big Easy, but also Sin City, summer in October, a little bit of Italy, and even some roller coaster fun all on board the Mardi Gras!

COVID-19 is in our rear-view mirror, but our kids are three years older. They won’t be with us forever, and we want to make the most of our time with them before they spread their wings and fly away. What we really want is to give them family memories that will last forever.

But cruising? Nah. Not for me.

That’s what I thought a few short years ago, until my wife convinced me to give a three- day Carnival cruise a try (we couldn’t do a seven-day cruise right out of the gate; what if I was miserable? I didn’t want to be stuck on a boat for a whole week).

But I was a believer in no time.

Cruising with Carnival quickly became our favorite indulgence together, and soon we were bringing our two sons along for the fun. Many we talked to said, “Carnival? Isn’t that just a party ship?” Yes, that’s exactly what is—a party for all ages! We’ve banked quite a few years of permanent family memories thanks to this excellent cruise line.

But the Mardi Gras takes family fun to a whole new level!

Entertainment

Carnival’s main theaters are second to none (Family Feud anyone?), and the Mardi Gras’ atrium has been transformed into an open-air show venue. Thrilling, first-class entertainment for the whole family take place each night on Grand Central’s Center Stage, viewable from three separate deck levels. The activities schedule is full from morning until late at night, with so many options our two teenage boys were soon setting their own schedules and loving every minute of it. Mom and Dad have to go to bed early (yes, we’re old), but our teenagers get to explore and play and come back to our stateroom when they want to. Would we be so willing to let them roam the neighborhood at home after we go to bed? Not a chance. But on a Carnival ship, kids enjoy a safe freedom.

Accommodations / Amenities

Staterooms are clean and modern. You won’t miss any home conveniences: closet space, full bathrooms, climate control, comfy bedding, even big, flat-screen TVs—they’re all features of Carnival’s standard accommodations. But that stateroom is only for sleeping, isn’t it? Who can resist the exciting and beautiful ports of call, the slides and pools that rival any water park, and—wait for it—a roller coaster that swings out over the ocean? It’s true, and if you’re not feeling that adventurous, there’s plenty of deck and lounge chair space next to some of the bluest water you’ll ever see. For a special treat that’s money well spent, indulge in a private cabana, for

a day or for the week, at Loft 19, on Mardi Gras’ top deck, away from the normal. It’s just one more in Carnival’s long line of cruising innovations.

Dining

We can’t imagine how they do it, but every bite of food seems to be the freshest and most delicious thing you’ve ever tasted, whether a petite ice cream cone or your most elegant five- course meal. Options await the cruiser in the form of sixteen (by our count) restaurants and quite a few bars and lounges, many of which are found only on the Mardi Gras. Room service? No problem. It’s your vacation—and every crew member wants to make it your best ever!

Exceptional Service

It truly is the people that make a Carnival cruise so special. You’re not just a number—in this case, one of about six thousand. Prepare to be treated like royalty by crew members from over sixty countries: your cabin steward, your dining hostess and wait staff, lounge chair attendants, even Guest Services team members—they all know your name, and they want to make sure you’re happy.

What a wonderful way to explore the world (or at least another part of it that you might otherwise never see) with the whole family! Families want a vacation they’ll talk about for years. Parents want to give their children memories that will last forever. There may be no better way than with a Carnival cruise on the Mardi Gras.
