AMERICAN JAZZ HEADS WEST FOR 2023 CALIFORNIA RIVER CRUISES

by Porthole Cruise and Travel January 26, 2023
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Today, American Cruise Lines announced that one of its ten brand-new riverboats, American Jazz, is leaving the Mississippi River and heading to the West Coast for new California river cruises scheduled to begin in February 2023. The new ship is currently on its way to San Francisco Bay and is anticipated to cross the Panama Canal in the upcoming days.

American Jazz’s Historic Journey

American Jazz’s trip closely resembles the route of the U.S. mail ships that traveled during the Gold Rush era. These ships transported passengers, gold, and mail between the East and West coasts. Aboard the new vessel is an expert nautical team supporting the crew and shoreside team to monitor weather trends, observe vessel systems and follow the overall progression of the voyage.

For the first time in more than 80 years, American Jazz will offer travelers overnight cruises through the Bay and California Delta onboard an American-made riverboat. She will sail American Cruise Lines’ first 8-Day San Francisco Bay itinerary on February 24, 2023. The newly designed river cruises will sail along the San Francisco Bay and Wine Country, the Sacramento River, the Napa River, and the San Joaquin River.

“Exploring San Francisco Bay and the California Delta by U.S. riverboat is a momentous occasion for domestic river cruising and another first for American Cruise Lines. We are proud to provide this new opportunity for our guests to experience the joys of cruising close to home, as they discover yet another beautiful area of the country by riverboat,” said Charles B. Robertson, President & CEO of American Cruise Lines. “American continues to expand the possibilities for exceptional domestic small ship cruises by introducing brand new U.S. flagged riverboats and small cruise ships each year.”

American Cruise Lines’ New Golden State Itineraries

The cruise line is now offering the 8-Day San Francisco Bay itinerary in February, March, November, and December of 2023 roundtrip from San Francisco. Guests will travel through Wine Country and San Francisco and enjoy onshore excursions like wine tastings and vineyard visits. The itineraries shine a spotlight on the geographical, cultural, and historical influences that contributed to the creation of San Francisco. The cruises will also highlight the unique agricultural communities and expansive vineyards in San Francisco and its surrounding areas.

The new 8-Day San Francisco Bay cruises will dock in San Francisco, Stockton, Sacramento, and Vallejo, and sail San Francisco Bay, San Pablo Bay, the Napa River, and the San Joaquin River. American Jazz’s 2023 California river cruises departure dates are 2/24, 3/3, 3/10, 3/17, 3/24, 11/03, 11/10, 11/17, 11/24, 12/01, 12/08, 12/15, 12/22, and 12/29.

Currently, American Cruise Lines’ Special Wave Season deals include complimentary domestic airfare for designated San Francisco Bay cruise dates for March 10, 17, and 24.

These river cruises reflect the broadening of the domestic river cruise industry. Recently, American Cruise Lines’ list of domestic itineraries and American-made small ships has almost doubled in growth since 2016. The company has also announced a few more new builds through 2027. American Cruise Lines’ boats accommodate a small number of approximately 180 guests and guarantee a private balcony and 350 square feet of space per passenger.

NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE EXPANDS PRESENCE IN SOUTH AFRICA

by Porthole Cruise and Travel January 26, 2023
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Norwegian Cruise Line is ecstatic to reach another landmark in the company’s history. The cruise line has completed its inaugural season cruising from Cape Town, South Africa.

One of Norwegian’s 18-ship fleet, Norwegian Jade, is the first vessel to officially homeport in the South African port. The cruise line is offering guests 12-day Extraordinary Journeys sailing through the coast of Namibia and South Africa. These voyages include visits to Mossel Bay, Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), Richard’s Bay, South Africa, and Luderitz and Walvis Bay, Namibia. The itineraries also include overnight stays in Cape Town, South Africa.

Norwegian Dawn Is Also Heading To South Africa

Norwegian Cruise Line has also announced that Norwegian Dawn will head to South Africa in the winter of 2024 to amplify the cruise line’s presence in the region. With an occupancy of 2,340, Norwegian Dawn will homeport in Cape Town, South Africa, and Port Louis, Mauritius. The Extraordinary Journey voyages will run from January through March 2024.

Harry Sommer, Brand President, and CEO at NCL, said, “As part of our Guest First philosophy we are focused on enhancing our destination offerings, providing our guests with more immersive itineraries that are designed to create memories of a lifetime. Our new Africa voyages are a testament to that, combining bucket-list locations such as Cape Town and Mauritius with hidden gems like Pomene and Maputo in Mozambique or Fort Dauphin in Madagascar. With an average of almost 12 hours in each port, allowing more time to fully experience these unforgettable destinations, the new voyages are already amongst our fastest selling cruises for 2024 and are attracting guests from almost 60 countries worldwide.”

Western Cape Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities, Mireille Wenger, comments: “Cruise tourism generates R300 million in economic impact for the Western Cape and supports thousands of jobs in the province. Positioning Cape Town as a homeport for international cruising and a gateway to Africa is a key growth opportunity for our region, and we welcome NCL’s commitment to sailing from Cape Town.”

Norwegian Dawn will depart— for the first time in the cruise line’s history— from Doha, Qatar, and sail to Mauritius on January 3, 2024, for her 17-day repositioning voyage to South Africa. Throughout this journey, the ship will call to the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Seychelles, Kenya, Tanzania, and Madagascar.

Shortly after, Norwegian Dawn will sail a 12-day cruise from Port Louis, Mauritius, on January 20, 2024. This itinerary features stops in Pointe des Galets, Réunion; Fort Dauphin (Toalagnaro), Madagascar; Pomene and Maputo, Mozambique; Richard’s Bay, Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), Mossel Bay and Cape Town, South Africa.

Norwegian Dawn will then sail two 12-day round trip voyages cruising through South Africa and Namibia on February 1 and March 8, 2024. The itinerary includes calls to Mossel Bay and Durban in South Africa, and Luderitz and Walvis Bay in Namibia. On March 20, 2024, she will sail an expansive itinerary from Cape Town, South Africa, to Barcelona, Spain. This 21-day itinerary will cruise through Africa’s west coast. A few highlights on the itinerary include visits to Namibia, Angola, Sao Tome and Principe, Ivory Coast, Gambia, Senegal, Cape Verde, Canary Islands, and Morocco.

Give Yourself the Valentine’s Day Gift of a Lifetime With Aurora Expeditions

by Judi Cuervo January 26, 2023
written by Judi Cuervo

Give Yourself the Valentine’s Day Gift of a Lifetime!

I might not know a whole lot about Aurora Expeditions, but I love them already.

While other cruise lines are marking the arrival of Valentine’s Day with promises of new romantic heights, Aurora Expeditions is encouraging us solo sailors to use this Hallmark holiday to celebrate self-love and plan the journey of a lifetime.

Hey! I’m all about love and friendship and have had quite a bit of both in my time but if I’m to be honest, there’s really nothing like sailing solo, walking into that cruise ship cabin knowing you won’t be kept up all night by a cabinmate’s snoring, being free to book the shore excursions you like best and, of course, having the freedom to use each and every hanger in the cabin’s closet.

Aurora Expeditions understands the allure of sailing solo and they’re making it easy for us with a “Go Solo and Save” promotion that chucks that pesky, all-too-common 100% single supplement overboard for bookings through February 28th. And I say it’s about time—tell me one other group of people who can be as brazenly discriminated against as solo sailors looking to book a cruise!

As a frequent solo sailor, it seems I’m pretty late to the Aurora Expeditions party. In fact, approximately 30% of guests aboard Aurora Expeditions sailings travel solo aboard the line’s two purpose-built 132-passenger ships, the Greg Mortimer (2019) and the Sylvia Earle (2022).
These small ships’ open-seating dining rooms, lively bars, lectures and all activities encourage bonds and friendships, keeping loneliness at bay and giving the solo traveler plenty of people to share the “wow!” moments experienced during expeditions to the spectacular parts of the
world that Aurora Expeditions sails.

Join thousands of penguins as they waddle around the ice-capped landscape of Antarctica. You might choose to participate in optional activities, too, like sea kayaking, scuba diving, snowshoeing and more. A warmer option is the scenic beauty and wildlife of steamy Costa Rica
which will surround you as you learn about the island’s diverse ecosystems, culture and history from expert guides and lecturers. For something truly different, take an expedition through the
United Kingdom, exploring the rugged west coast of Ireland or the wild isles of Scotland, or be dazzled by the heavens as the Northern lights illuminate the sky above you as you skirt around the Norwegian and Greenland seas.

And, as an innovative extra, all Aurora Expeditions voyages include expert photographers who, during unique lectures and presentations, provide tips and tricks to help photographers at all levels improve their skills behind the lens. With everyone eager to hone their photography
skills, you won’t have to rely on those blasted selfies to capture yourself against magnificent backdrops!

This Valentine’s Day, give yourself the journey of a lifetime aboard Aurora Expeditions. You’ll never again yearn for a Whitman’s Sampler in a heart-shaped box.

Head to Aurora Expeditions website for more information!

BROTHERS NAMED CO-CAPTAINS OF CELEBRITY ASCENT

by Porthole Cruise and Travel January 25, 2023
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Today, Celebrity Cruises President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo named brothers, Dimitrios and Tasos Kafetzis, co-captains of the cruise line’s newest Edge Series ship, Celebrity Ascent. Celebrity Ascent is Celebrity Cruises’ fourth ship in their innovative Edge Series fleet. The brothers will take the helm of the cruise line’s newest ship this upcoming winter and will rotate their time captaining Celebrity Ascent in three-month increments.

An innovative design team brought Celebrity Ascent to life with a contemporary and luxurious design. The team is comprised of renowned British designer Kelly Hoppen CBE; prominent American designer Nate Berkus, and accomplished Chef & Restaurateur Daniel Boulud.

“Captain Dimitrios and Captain Tasos are our star-powered siblings, a maritime dream team. They have given so much to the Celebrity family over the years that we are like a second family,” said Lutoff-Perlo. “Seeing their emotional reaction to this appointment and understanding what it means to share this pinnacle of their career together was something I didn’t expect and will never forget.”

Lutoff-Perlo added, “This ship represents a monumental milestone for our brand, taking our innovative outward-facing design further than ever, and creating a whole new class of relaxed luxury resorts at sea. I am so proud to leave her in the hands of these expert mariners.”

Captain Dimitrios has more than thirty years of experience at sea with Celebrity Cruises. He began his career as an Apprentice Officer onboard the cruise line’s first ship, the Horizon. Today, he reached a career milestone after being named take-out Captain of Celebrity Ascent. Captain Dimitrios was born in Piraeus, Greece, and graduated top of his class from the Merchant Maritime Academy of Syros-Athens. He has maintained his master’s license since 2001. Captain Dimitrios has experienced life aboard all of Celebrity Cruises’ ship classes and was part of the startup teams responsible for Celebrity Millennium, Celebrity Infinity, and Celebrity Silhouette. He also took on the role of take-out Captain aboard Celebrity Apex.

Captain Tasos, the younger of the two, longed to follow in his older brother’s footsteps and make a cruising career for himself. After graduating from Merchant Marine College, Tasos joined the Celebrity Cruises team in 1998. His career with the cruise line spans over 20 years and was heavily involved with the debut of Celebrity Summit, Celebrity Solstice, Celebrity Equinox, and Celebrity Reflection. In 2018, Captain Tasos served as captain for one of Celebrity’s Edge Series ships, Celebrity Edge.

“Today is a momentous day,” said Captain Dimitrios Katetzis. “I am proud that after a more than 30- year career working exclusively with Celebrity Cruises, I can play a part in their history by captaining this fourth in the series – yet, one of a kind – Edge Series ship. Nearly 35 years after Celebrity Cruises was founded in Greece, they will have not one, but two Greek captains taking the helm of their newest vessel in 2023 and I am honored for my brother and I to take this role, together. I am so proud for my family and proud of my brother. We look forward to welcoming everyone on board Celebrity Ascent this winter.”

“Receiving this distinction with my brother and as part of the Celebrity Cruises family is an incredible honor for me and an emotional one, too,” said Captain Tasos Kafetzis. Together, my brother and I share a love of the ocean, and a love for this company and our guests. To share a special moment together like this is something I could have only dreamed of. I can’t wait to sail away on this incredible ship with our guests onboard and my brother in my heart.”

OCEANIA CRUISES ANNOUNCES ASIA SAILINGS ABOARD THE NEWLY REJUVENATED RIVIERA

by Porthole Cruise and Travel January 24, 2023
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Due to the high guest demand for the 2023-2024 cruising season, Oceania Cruises has confirmed that a re-inspired Riviera will sail across Asia for the first time. With an occupancy of over 1,200 guests, Riviera will transport guests across Asia in style, highlighting culture and cuisine along the way.

In her inaugural season, Riviera will sail through Arabia, India, Myanmar, Vietnam, China, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, and the Philippines. The newly imagined ship will offer 25 voyages, ranging from 10 to 82 days. Oceania’s Regatta and Nautica will also offer more voyages across the South Pacific, including destinations like Australia, French Polynesia, and New Zealand.

Almost doubling its seasonal availability, Oceania Cruises is offering 121 itineraries for booking aboard Riviera, Regatta, Insignia, and Nautica. The launch of the newly reimagined Riviera comes after guest demand and sales surpassed expectations.

“Riviera‘s re-inspiration has brought our luxurious product to new heights and the expansion of our Exotics 2023-2024 season means even more of our guests have the opportunity to explore one of the most intriguing corners of the globe,” said Frank A. Del Rio, President of Oceania Cruises.

“The decision to move Riviera to Asia was easy; demand for our Exotics collection is very strong with our well-traveled guests longing to visit remote, wondrous destinations for off-the-beaten-path experiences. Having Riviera sail this corner of the world, showcasing her new stem-to-stern, better-than-new interiors, is the most stylish, luxurious, and relaxing way to explore multiple fascinating cultures while enjoying The Finest Cuisine at Sea on one voyage.”

Travelers aboard Riviera will discover famous sites like the Great Wall, Bangkok’s Grand Palace, Ha Long Bay, and Kyoto’s temples and gardens. Guests will also explore rarely visited corners of Asia like Yangon and the remote island of Ishigaki in Japan and Hue, a once Imperial city along Vietnam’s Perfume River.

Riviera Reimagined

Riviera has had a complete makeover! All her staterooms and suites have been elegantly redesigned, with custom furnishings, designer accents, and wood finishes.

Here are a few highlights of the newly rejuvenated Riviera:

  • Veranda Staterooms and Concierge Level Staterooms are some of the largest standard staterooms at sea, at 291 square feet
  • All stateroom bathrooms have the look of a contemporary Milanese townhouse, with hints of Italian marble and exquisite artwork.
  • Reimagined dining alfresco concept with new trattoria, including various wood-fired pizzas, Italian delicacies, fresh salads, and desserts each evening
  • Riviera’s public spaces, the food & beverage venues, and The Grand Dining Room have all been completely revamped. Public spaces now feature elegant plush carpets and leather armchairs. Food and beverage venues now have a chic design, all while maintaining the home-away-from-home atmosphere. The Grand Dining Room now features a grand chandelier, plush carpets, and leather armchairs, like some of the public spaces on the ship.

Itineraries

The newly designed Riviera will sail 25 voyages ranging from 10 to 82 days. Some of these voyages include stops in Cochin, India; Yangon, Myanmar; Busan, South Korea; and Phuket and Bangkok in Thailand.

Regatta and Nautica are offering travelers itineraries across the South Pacific and French Polynesia for the first time in the cruise line’s history. The two ships are sailing more than 20 voyages and feature stops in Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moorea, Rangiroa, and Raiatea. The voyages range from 10 to 41 days, including a homecoming for Regatta in New Zealand and Australia and Nautica sailing through India, Southeast Asia, and Arabia.

Del Rio commented: “Thanks to these spectacular itineraries, our guests can discover some of the most beautiful and remote destinations in the world, such as little-known islands in Polynesia, in the most luxurious and immersive way possible – by sea. They can also enjoy world-famous city sights in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Ho Chi Minh City, and Bangkok, to name a few. The breadth of travel experiences on offer across the voyages of our beautifully appointed, elegant small ships is simply unparalleled.”

Celebrity Cruises Celebrates the Float Out of Celebrity Ascent

by Porthole Cruise and Travel January 23, 2023
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

On January 21, 2023, Celebrity Cruises’ newest Edge Series ship ceremoniously touched water for the first time from the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. This milestone signifies the completion of Celebrity Ascent’s hull and exterior superstructure. The newest ship is now in the next construction phase, focusing on the interior build.

Coming in December 2023, Celebrity Ascent will closely resemble her “twin sister” ship Celebrity Beyond, which debuted last spring. Celebrity Beyond was designed by a modernistic team including award-winning British designer Kelly Hoppen CBE; renowned American designer Nate Berkus; acclaimed Paris-based design firm Jouin Manku; futuristic British architect Tom Wright; and Michelin-starred chef and restaurateur Daniel Boulud.

“So much more than a ship, Celebrity Ascent will be the embodiment of a relaxed luxury resort at sea, and I can’t imagine a more exciting way to start the new year than by celebrating this important construction milestone,” said Celebrity Cruises President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo. “The collaboration between the shipyard and Celebrity teams continues to be extraordinary and I am grateful to all involved for their passion and expertise. Momentum and anticipation is quickly building for this ship and we’ll continue to share her progress and all that awaits our guests onboard this next installation in our groundbreaking, next-generation Edge Series.”

Guests aboard the new Celebrity Ascent will enjoy exclusive experiences that Celebrity Cruises Edge Series ships are known for, including:

  • Scenic views from the Magic Carpet- the very first cantilevered cruise ship experience from bow to stern thanks to the ships’ innovative outward-facing design
  • Accommodations that include two-story Edge Villa staterooms with exclusive access to the suite-only The Retreat Sun Deck and the Infinite Veranda staterooms that convert into some of the largest open-air verandas at sea
  • More than 30 food and drink venues, including the innovative and immersive Le Petit Chef Dinner Experience. Guests can enjoy the three-story floor-to-ceiling windows, inventive cocktails, and globally influenced dishes found at the Eden Restaurant. Celebrity Ascent also features Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud, which features high-end and elegant cuisine at sea.
  • Passengers will experience the height of relaxation across the entire ship, including the Nate Berkus-designed Sunset Bar, an elite Resort Deck with exclusive cabanas, infinity edge pools, and two-story Martini-shaped hot tubs.

Celebrity Ascent is currently mooring at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard, where interior construction of the ship will begin and continue over the next few months.

A Ship Remade

by Judi Cuervo January 19, 2023
written by Judi Cuervo

That one’s too big! This one’s too small! But Star Pride, I discover, is just right.

I used to feel like Goldilocks when seeking the perfect-size ship for my next cruise vacation. Those behemoths with a dozen or more passenger decks and thousands of shipmates were overwhelming, while the tiny yacht-like vessels seemed limiting in terms of public spaces and activities. Star Pride, I found, is the answer: A little of slip of a thing that manages to incorporate a whole lot of big ship choice into a compact little 12,995 grt, 312-guest package.

Not New … But You’d Never Know It!

Star Pride gleams beneath the Mediterranean sun as my taxi speeds me to the Piraeus terminal to board the ship’s inaugural sailing. This “inaugural” is just the latest for the luxury vessel that first emerged from the shipyard in 1988 to sail under the Seabourn Cruise Line banner as Seabourn Pride. Twenty-five years later, rechristened Star Pride, the ship joined the Windstar Cruises’ fleet which soon announced big plans for her (and sister ships Star Breeze and Star Legend) in the form of the Star Plus Initiative, a complex and aggressive $250 million renovation program that would lengthen the ship by cutting it in half and inserting a new 84-foot section that would add 50 suites, dining venues, an infinity pool, and an expanded gym and fitness center. And the initiative would go behind the scenes as well, replacing the ship’s engines and adding technical bells and whistles that make Star Pride more environmentally friendly.

The result, even from a distance, is breathtaking: A stunning ship with classic lines, her only frill the iconic and elegant Tiffany-blue stripe that identifies Star Pride as a member of the Windstar fleet.

Stellar and Spacious Digs

Yachts and small ships offer the intimate atmosphere I crave but, with space at such a premium, I’d learned to accept snug accommodations and a bathroom with a cramped little shower that makes leg-shaving an exercise in contortion. Not so aboard Star Pride. Today, I open the door to a generous living space with a queen-size bed dressed in luxury linens, an ample sitting area, and a roomy walk-in closet. My suite has a little Juliet balcony, too narrow for furniture but perfect for gazing out to sea. Even the bathroom is a stunner, completely modernized and as functional as it is beautiful, with a full shower with both hand-held and rain shower options and a selection of high-end L’Occitane toiletries.

Mine is an original Star Pride suite, something that is distinguished by the placement of the bed near the suite’s entrance. Suites added during the Star Plus Initiative feature a sleeping area alongside the window or balcony for those who prefer to wake with a view of the ocean. But, most astonishing of all is that suites aboard Star Pride begin at a generous 277 square feet!

Like a Big Ship … Only Smaller!

Is this an optical illusion?? As I roam Star Pride, I find spacious lounges and showrooms, an observation library, specialty restaurants, a quirky alfresco bar, fitness center, spa and salon, sizable deck space, and an infinity pool. How is this even possible aboard such a small ship?

I’ve always believed that there’s nothing that can’t be improved by subtracting thousands of people from it and a cruise aboard Star Pride proves I’m right. With her low passenger capacity, Star Pride has no need for the endless corridors of suites and cabins found on large ships, nor a soaring atrium that rises through multiple decks. What remains is an easy-to-navigate ship that offers in six passenger decks everything that the large ships do (except a casino). It’s perfect for those who don’t want a 20-minute commute back to their suite should they arrive at the pool to discover they forgot their sunglasses.

Yet, at the same time, some of the best features and experiences found aboard yacht-like vessels abound. Star Pride’s retractable marina, for example, opens…

Lobster, Lighthouses, and the Lure of the Sea

by Richard Varr January 19, 2023
written by Richard Varr

I never quite realized the true meaning of “sea legs” until I stepped aboard the American Eagle. Powerful winds gorged the sails of this nearly century-old schooner, heeling the vessel to one side as it sliced through choppy surf. I hobbled across the slanted deck, cautiously taking every step as I looked out at Penobscot Bay toward the island of North Haven. We’d been sailing for a couple of hours, but it seemed our destination wasn’t getting any closer. The crew shifted the sails and I soon found out why.

“That’s the wonderful mystery of sailing,” admits American Eagle Captain Tyler King. “When you have to get right to where the wind is coming from, you have to kind of zigzag your way there.”

It was the second day of a 3-day Windjammer sail, an adventure exploring seaside villages and quiet coves, and passing several lighthouses in and around coastal Maine’s craggy islands. Each sail is different, with captains determining destinations and activities often at the mercy of the fickle New England weather. “There’s no itinerary and there’s no place we have to be,” asserts King.

The Maine Windjammer Association’s working fleet of nine schooners berthed in Rockland and Camden are all that remain of the 19th– and early 20th-century vessels that once commanded the fishing and trade routes along the East Coast and beyond. Today, the schooners’ cargo is human — adventurers seeking a true sailing experience on either 3- or 6-day voyages.

Built in 1930, the two-masted American Eagle trawled for fish until 1983, joining the Maine Windjammer fleet and then being recognized as a National Historic Landmark soon after. “She’s the last Gloucester swordfish schooner in existence,” notes King. “She could carry 100,000 pounds of ice per trip. During her first 12 or so years of operation, she caught more than eight million pounds of fish.”

DAY ONE

For our cruise, 18 passengers and six crew members actually boarded the night before. In fact, that Friday night of our late September sail was at the precise time Hurricane Fiona ripped through the North Atlantic toward Nova Scotia, a few hundred miles to the east. Although secured snugly, the ship creaked and groaned throughout the night from the wind and subsequent rough tide flowing into Rockland harbor. “That’s just the way wooden boats are constructed,” explained first mate Asher Heaney. “They’re supposed to be flexible to absorb all the shocks and strain.”

A strong coffee aroma awakened me around 7 a.m. and the breakfast bell chimed just an hour later. Under brilliant sunshine, chilly gusts stalled our journey, but by early afternoon the crew finally yanked the ropes tethering us to shore. The diesel engine rumbled as we chugged past the harbor’s breakwater, a nearly mile-long sliver of land capped with the red-brick Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse. As we crossed West Penobscot Bay, swells of up to four feet hammered the hull, but the schooner steadfastly glided through them, as I’m sure it had through far worse surf over her more than 90 years at sea.

We welcomed calmer waters when arriving at Fox Island Thoroughfare, a passageway between North Haven and Vinalhaven islands. We passed Browns Head Lighthouse, its whitewashed façade contrasting sharply with the year-round green conifers — pine, fir, and spruce trees — so typical of these islands.

Come evening, I heard the roar of clanking chains as the anchor dropped in Carver Cove off Vinalhaven. The two-masted Windjammer J. & E. Riggin also anchored nearby, finding refuge in this calm inlet for the night. It was here that our chefs fired up Maine’s traditional lobster feast with melted butter and corn on the cob. They generously cooked extra, with some passengers eating two lobsters and one crew member boasting he downed seven!

Retiring for the night, it was back…

Shore Leave: Everywhere a Tuk-Tuk!

by Elizabeth Martinez January 19, 2023
written by Elizabeth Martinez

Located in the southern portion of Southeast Asia and seemingly a world away, Cambodia can be an amazing destination for any traveler.

It can actually be quite easy to navigate the country’s beaches and mountains, inexpensive lodging, lovely towns and cities, and plentiful food and drink options. Cambodia widely accepts the US dollar (as well as the Cambodian riel), making a visit here even easier. What makes Cambodia extra special, however, is its people. Despite the country’s sad history, Cambodians are inviting, warm, and happy to see foreigners. As the country continues to rebuild, more visitors are realizing that Cambodia is a feast for the eyes, palate, and soul.

The Paris of the East

The tuk-tuk gets you around Cambodia’s cities. | Photo: LENOVO-stock.adobe.com

Often regarded as having some of the best French architecture outside of France, Phnom Penh is the country’s capital and most populous city. Although tuk-tuks — auto rickshaws — are quite popular in Cambodia, one of the best ways to see this city is by cycle rickshaw. Download the Grab or PassApp and easily call for a nearby pedal pusher. The app can also help you hail a car, tuk-tuk, or maybe even a ride on the back of a motorbike.

Perhaps start your city tour at the Independence Monument, built in 1958. After a few photos, walk to the nearby Wat Phnom temple, an important spot for locals to pray for blessings or just revel in the green space. Then, have a drive along the benches and fountains of Wat Botun park until you arrive at the Royal Palace. The massive king’s compound is worth a photo from the outside at the very least. Snag a snack from one of the street vendors perched along the riverside, but save room for a visit to the famous weekend Night Market. There, you can find food hawkers showcasing everything-on-a-stick as well as flavorful soups and bowls of noodles with meat. One of the most popular, ka tieu, is made with rice noodles and pork (variations feature beef and other meats). Also try Cambodia’s answer to French ratatouille, samlor korkor, a rich vegetable soup usually featuring pork or catfish.  Bugs are also on the menu in Cambodia; try fried spiders, worms, small frogs, or crickets … if you dare.

Phnom Penh’s other two famous stall collectives are the Russian and Central Markets. Visit the Central Market to shop for jewelry and other shiny baubles or just to see the 1930s art deco building that houses a good sum of it. The dizzying Russian Market overflows with clothing, housewares, produce, flowers, souvenirs, artisan goods, and never-seen-before food ingredients, but wear comfy shoes, cool clothes, and haggle, haggle, haggle.

A Somber Legacy

Amid the hustle and bustle, there is also a melancholic side to this world capital. A visit to the Tuol Sleng Museum (also known as Security Prison 21 or just S-21), is a must. This former school served as one of the more notorious prisons during the genocide but now honors the victims through photos and artifacts as well as two survivors who spend their…

Wine & Dine: Kadıköy Cuisine

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine January 19, 2023
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

When Constantinople fell in 1453, Kadıköy was a remote rural settlement called Chalcedon. By the late 19th century, the district had become home to people from all over the Ottoman Empire and beyond. There were Turkish-born Muslims, Jews, Armenians, and Greeks, as well as White Russian exiles, Italian stonemasons, and German engineers. They all left their mark through architecture and food, tucked away in backstreets and around the corners in Kadıköy. Here’s where to look.

Çarşı

In Çarşı, the market area near the ferry wharves, crowds traverse narrow pedestrian laneways, teaming with butchers, coffee houses, bakers, fish restaurants, clothing stores, and the like. Small, centuries-old Orthodox churches nestle on corners. At Ali Muhiddin Hacı Bekir, they’ve been making lokum, chewy morsels of Turkish delight, since 1777, when the shop was founded by a migrant from the Black Sea. The Ottoman Sultans were once amongst their best customers and after the first exquisite bite, it’s easy to see why.

A few blocks away, an elegant, multi-roomed Greek mansion houses the Viktor Levi Şarap Evi, or Wine House. Viktor was a young sardine fisherman who discovered wine-making on a visit to the Aegean island of Bozcaada in the early 20th century. He started growing his own grapes there before opening the first Viktor Levi Wine House in 1914. Today, guests can wine and dine in the calm of an interior done out with stylish and cosy booths surrounded by photos of famous diners, or outdoors in the lush courtyard garden.

For a traditional Türk kahve, head for one of the coffee houses lining Mühüdar Caddesi, right in the center of Çarşı. The coffee is made by mixing fine grounds and water together in a tin-lined copper pot called a cezve, and heating it on hot sand. When you’re finished, join the fast-moving queue at Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi and buy a bag of freshly ground coffee from Turkey’s foremost coffee supplier to take back home.

Pålegg, featuring Scandinavian cuisine in a menu based on smørrebrød, designed by a Turkish chef who worked in Norway’s first Michelin-starred….

Yeldeğermeni

In Yeldeğirmeni, on the opposite side of Altıyol, architectural treasures built by workers on the Haydarpaşa Railway Station line the streets. A school built for the children of German engineers is in the same row as the Italian-designed Valpreda Apartments, one of Istanbul’s first-ever apartment blocks, near a former French lise built on a pilgrimage site. Now there’s Pålegg, featuring Scandinavian cuisine in a menu based on smørrebrød, designed by a Turkish chef who worked in Norway’s first Michelin-starred….
