Here is How to Navigate Dietary Restrictions on Your Next Cruise

by Porthole Cruise and Travel August 26, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Cruising allows you to explore the world while enjoying fine dining. However, dining on a cruise can be challenging for travelers with dietary restrictions. Whether your restrictions are due to health needs or personal choices, you can still enjoy your cruise without worry. Keep reading to learn some tips:

1. Communication is Key

Before you embark on your cruise, communicate your dietary restrictions to the cruise line. Most cruise lines are well-equipped to handle special dietary requests, whether you are vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or have food allergies. Notify them during the booking process, and feel free to follow up closer to your departure date with any questions or concerns.

2. Plan Ahead

Review the cruise line’s website for information on their dining policies and options. Many cruise lines offer menus in advance, allowing you to select meals that suit your dietary needs. Don’t hesitate to contact customer service for specific questions or concerns.

3. Flexible Dining Options

Many cruise ships have multiple dining venues and flexibility in meal options. This means that you are not confined to one main dining room; instead, you can choose from a variety of restaurants and even specialty dining options that may cater more directly to your preferences. For example, some cruises offer Asian, Italian, or health-conscious culinary venues that may provide more suitable choices.

4. Speak to the Chef

Onboard chefs are generally accustomed to accommodating special requests. Make it a point to talk to the head waiter or chef about your dietary restrictions upon boarding. This personal touch can help ensure that meals are prepared according to your needs, and you may be surprised by the delicious alternatives they can whip up just for you!

5. Snacks and Buffets

Cruising often involves enjoying buffet-style dining in addition to sit-down restaurants. Buffets may be easier for those with dietary restrictions, as they allow you to inspect your options firsthand. Remember to ask about allergens or hidden ingredients, as dishes may not always be labeled explicitly.

6. Explore Onshore Opportunities

While in port, take the opportunity to explore local cuisine that aligns with your diet. Research restaurants in advance and mark those that celebrate your dietary preferences. Many ports of call are known for their culinary delights, and eating onshore can be a great way to expand your dining options beyond what’s available on the ship.

Don’t forget the main reason for cruising: the experience! While cuisine is an important aspect of your journey, remember to savor the views, the excursions, and the adventures. Planning and communication can go a long way in ensuring that your dietary needs are met, allowing you to focus on enjoying every moment of your cruise.

Why a Weekend Cruise is Perfect for First-Timers

by Porthole Cruise and Travel August 21, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Are you thinking about your first cruise? A weekend cruise is a great way to start. It’s a shorter commitment, letting you enjoy the ship and its activities without feeling overwhelmed. Keep reading to find out more about the benefits of a weekend cruise!

Short and Sweet

A weekend cruise takes just two to three days, giving you a taste of life on a cruise ship without a long commitment. You’ll have time to explore the ship, enjoy amenities, and possibly visit a port of call—perfect for a first-time experience.

Budget-Friendly

Weekend cruises are often cost-effective. With shorter itineraries, you’ll find better rates that typically include meals and entertainment. Many cruise lines also offer promotional deals for first-timers, making it an affordable way to try cruising.

Quick Escape

A weekend cruise provides a perfect chance to disconnect from daily stresses. With the ocean’s gentle sway, you can relax by the pool, indulge in a spa treatment, or enjoy cocktails on deck as you watch the sunset.

Easy Packing

With a weekend cruise, packing is simplified. Most cruise lines have relaxed dress codes, so a few casual outfits, swimwear, and one semi-formal outfit are usually sufficient. You won’t have to worry about heavy luggage or extensive shore excursion preparation.

Opportunity for Exploration

Many weekend cruises stop at exciting ports, allowing you to explore new destinations without the hassle of multiple hotel check-ins. Experience new cultures and environments while returning to your ship by sunset.

Pack your bag and get ready for an unforgettable journey. The ocean awaits!

Construction is underway at the Port of Galveston to transform a cargo warehouse into a new cruise terminal, set to be the home of MSC Seascape!

This $151 million complex at Pier 16 will feature a 165,000-square-foot terminal and a $55 million parking garage, and it is anticipated to open in November 2025.

ABOUT CONSTRUCTION AND CEREMONY

On August 20, 2024, Galveston Wharves marked the start of construction at Pier 16 during a ceremony attended by MSC Cruises executives, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) representatives, elected officials, community leaders, and port partners.

During the ceremony, Rodger Rees, CEO of Galveston Wharves, and Rick Sasso, U.S. chairman of MSC Cruises, unveiled a large rendering of the terminal complex with the MSC Seascape docked alongside.

“We have so much to celebrate today with this milestone and what it means to our community, cruise guests, and port partners,” said Ress. “This beautiful new terminal will generate jobs and economic growth for the region, an exciting new cruise choice for our market, and growth opportunities for our port partners.”

With the opening of the fourth terminal, Rees expressed his expectation that the port will welcome over 2 million passengers annually starting in 2026, marking a significant milestone in Galveston’s 24-year history as a cruise home port.

“We also want to take this opportunity to give a warm, Texas-sized welcome to MSC Cruises, the world’s third largest cruise line. Having a cruise line of this stature homeporting in Galveston says a great deal about our position in the U.S. and global cruise markets,” Ress added.

Sasso remarked, “The groundbreaking for Cruise Terminal 16 marks a significant milestone in MSC Cruises’ ongoing U.S. expansion. Adding Galveston as our fourth homeport will make it even easier for travelers from the central and western parts of the country to enjoy our distinctive mix of European style and American comfort. This state-of-the-art terminal will set the tone for a memorable cruise experience. We are thrilled to work closely with the Galveston Wharves to shape the future of cruising in Texas, delivering extraordinary vacations and unforgettable moments aboard the beautiful and modern MSC Seascape.”

U.S. Congressman Randy Weber joined in on the excitement, stating, “I’m thrilled about the groundbreaking of our fourth cruise terminal at the Port of Galveston. This kind of investment is a game-changer for our community, and it’s all thanks to Rodger Rees. His leadership is putting Galveston on the map as a top cruise destination and keeping our port bustling with activity. I will continue to fight for our ports in Congress to ensure they get the support they deserve.”

Regional Economic Benefits

In 2022, the port’s cruise activity generated 3,500 jobs, $568 million in local business revenue, and $73.5 million in passenger and crew purchases. The fourth cruise terminal is expected to create an additional 925 jobs and contribute $177 million in annual local business revenue. Galveston will also benefit from passenger fees and sales tax revenues from cruise parking.

First Look at Disney Imagination Garden aboard Disney Adventure

by Julie Bouchner August 20, 2024
written by Julie Bouchner

Disney Cruise Line reveals new details about the Disney Imagination Garden, one of the seven themed areas on Disney Adventure, set to sail from Singapore in 2025.

“Disney Imagination Garden is the heart and soul of the Disney Adventure, where our guests will interact with our Disney, Pixar and Marvel stories in a whole new way,” said Laura Cabo, portfolio executive creative director, Walt Disney Imagineering. “The size and scale of this space provided us with so many opportunities to dream big and try new things with our experiential design, creating first-of-a-kind experiences for our guests, from all-new entertainment to delicious dining and lots of magical surprises sprinkled throughout. Rooted in the rich legacy of Disney storytelling, we’re creating an area that will open doors to new adventures and encourage guests to create magic of their own.”

MORE ABOUT DISNEY IMAGINATION GARDEN

Disney Imagination Garden is a central hub inspired by 100 years of Disney storytelling, featuring colorful landscapes and beloved characters. Highlights include a three-deck-tall storybook castle, a theatrical stage, two quick-service eateries, a bar, and garden-view staterooms.

  • As one of seven themed areas on Disney Adventure, it includes Disney Discovery Reef, San Fransokyo Street, Wayfinder Bay, Town Square, Marvel Landing, and Toy Story Place.
  • The garden features landscapes designed like a pop-up storybook with paper cut-outs, vibrant flowers, and topiaries enhanced by trellises and lanterns.
  • The Garden Stage anchors one end, and larger-than-life castle artwork dominates the other.
  • A promenade allows families to explore and dine, while an open lawn leads to a grand staircase for amphitheater-style seating for live entertainment.
  • At the top, a garden courtyard and bar are surrounded by storybook-style trees and animal motifs, with a Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey Mouse topiary serving as a centerpiece.
  • Families in Garden View staterooms can enjoy a verandah with garden views.

All-Day Entertainment

Families can enjoy a variety of high-energy shows, character appearances, and surprises at the Garden Stage.

One highlight is Avengers Assemble!, showcasing Deadpool in his Disney Cruise Line debut. This action-packed performance features thrilling stunts and special effects as Marvel Super Heroes and Villains battle at sea, including Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Thor, Black Panther, The Scarlet Witch, Ms. Marvel, Loki, Red Skull, Taskmaster, and more.

Stay tuned for more information about additional shows and entertainment offerings at the Garden Stage!

DINING EXPERIENCES

Disney Imagination Garden will feature two quick-service eateries in the cruise fare, inspired by “The Jungle Book” and “Moana.” Both locations will offer immersive dining experiences with indoor and outdoor seating, where guests can enjoy views of the Garden Stage entertainment.

Mowgli’s Eatery will serve Indian cuisine, featuring vegetarian and regional dishes with a Disney twist. Drawing inspiration from Mowgli’s journey, the eatery will incorporate early concept art and authentic design elements from the film.

Gramma Tala’s Kitchen will celebrate the vibrant atmosphere of “Moana,” with decor reflecting the Pacific Islands. The menu will highlight the diverse flavors of the Pacific and Asia, enhanced by artistic elements from the film’s backgrounds.

DISNEY ADVENTURE ITINERARY

In 2025, Disney Adventure will sail from the Marina Bay Cruise Centre in Singapore for at least five years in collaboration with the Singapore Tourism Board. The ship will offer families three- and four-night voyages packed with entertainment and memorable experiences.

Guests can choose from staterooms with ocean and promenade views or concierge accommodations. These concierge rooms provide access to a private lounge, an expansive sundeck with pools and whirlpools, shopping venues, and premium spa and fitness facilities.

When you set sail on a cruise, the culinary delights await you. However, the novelty of dining aboard can sometimes wear off. To ensure your meals remain exciting throughout your voyage, here are six invaluable tips to spice up your cruise dining experience!

Sample Everything

Don’t stick to what you know! Take advantage of the opportunity to sample various dishes at each meal. Opt for smaller portions or share plates with friends and family. You can explore diverse flavors without committing to a single option.

Explore Specialty Restaurants

Cruise lines often boast a variety of specialty dining options, from sushi to steakhouses. Make reservations at these unique venues to experience a different culinary ambiance and menu. Not only will this provide a refreshing change, but it may also introduce you to exquisite dishes you wouldn’t find in the main dining room.

Immerse Yourself in Local Flavors

Take advantage of the local cuisine when your ship docks at a port. Whether you dine at local eateries or participate in food-themed excursions like market tours or cooking classes, immersing yourself in regional flavors will enhance your culinary journey.

Attend Culinary Demonstrations

Many cruises offer cooking demonstrations that showcase various cooking techniques and recipes. These events often conclude with tasty samples, allowing you to learn something new while enjoying a delicious treat.

Mix Up Your Dining Experience

Switch between formal dining rooms and casual eateries throughout your cruise. Many lines offer flexible dining options, so take advantage of different atmospheres and menu styles. This variety will keep your meals fresh and engaging.

Share Your Meals

If you’re traveling with others, consider ordering various dishes to share. This communal approach allows you to taste more options and turns each meal into a fun, social experience that enhances your dining enjoyment.
