Brilliant Lady to Set Sail to Alaska in 2026

by Julie Bouchner October 29, 2024
written by Julie Bouchner

Virgin Voyages is launching sailings to Alaska in the summer of 2026. The new ship, Brilliant Lady, will offer 17 voyages to 12 destinations from May to September. Presale access begins on Thursday, and general sales start on November 13.

Brilliant Lady will provide a unique experience during peak orca season, allowing travelers to spot wildlife such as bald eagles, seals, and humpback whales, along with activities like salmon fishing and glacier trekking.

Itineraries range from seven to 12 nights, departing from Seattle and Vancouver, with stops in Alaska and Canada’s northwest. For example, the MerMaiden voyage (May 21-28) includes stops in Ketchikan, Sitka, Tracy Arm Fjord, and Prince Rupert before returning to Seattle.

Virgin Voyages’ CEO Nirmal Saverimuttu said, “We have incredibly high repeat rates, so our Sailors are always challenging us to seek new horizons; they always want to know ‘where else can we sail with Virgin?’ This brand is charting new paths, and the sold-out response to our Front(ier) of the Line passes earlier this year showed us just how sought after our Alaskan itineraries are. We continue to reach for the high seas with our itineraries, with Brilliant Lady being no exception. Soon our Sailors can visit one of the world’s most incredible destinations on the No. 1 cruise line, all while enjoying new and exciting artists, chefs and musicians that bring the Virgin vibe.”

MORE ABOUT BRILLIANT LADY

Brilliant Lady offers guests wildlife views from balconies with hammocks, floor-to-ceiling windows in The Galley, and comfortable daybeds at The Athletic Club and The Dock. The Runway serves as a sightseeing platform during morning runs, and new “Treat Yourself” options feature locally sourced Alaskan seafood.

The ship will debut in September 2026 in New York, with cruises from Miami, Los Angeles, and Seattle, including a 16-night Panama Canal cruise. Alaskan voyages commence in May 2024, with limited itineraries available to Virgin Voyages’ Sailing Club members this week and general bookings opening on November 13. A new seven-night itinerary from Los Angeles will include Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán, and Puerto Vallarta.

The Benefits of Main Dining on Cruises

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 28, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Main dining on cruises offers a convenient and enjoyable dining experience, making it a popular choice for many travelers. Here’s a straightforward look at why main dining is a great option and its key advantages.

What is Main Dining on Cruises?

Main dining refers to the designated dining room on a cruise ship where passengers gather for meals at set times. Typically, cruise lines offer early and late dining options, with menus that change daily, providing a mix of traditional and modern cuisine.

Key Advantages of Main Dining

Structured Meal Times

Main dining provides set meal times, making it easy for families and groups to coordinate their schedules. This structure ensures everyone can enjoy a meal together after a day of activities.

No Reservations Needed

Unlike specialty restaurants, main dining usually doesn’t require reservations. Passengers can show up at their assigned time, reducing the stress of meal planning.

Variety of Menu Options

Main dining offers a rotating menu with a variety of choices, ensuring that guests can enjoy both familiar favorites and new dishes throughout their cruise. This variety accommodates different tastes and dietary needs.

Social Atmosphere

Dining in a main dining room allows for social interaction with fellow passengers. Sharing a table can lead to new friendships and enjoyable conversations, enriching the cruising experience.

Quality Food and Service

Main dining rooms maintain high standards for food and service. Experienced staff members are dedicated to attentive service, and skilled chefs often prepare meals using fresh ingredients.

Accommodating Dietary Needs

Main dining typically accommodates various dietary restrictions, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. Guests can communicate their needs to ensure a satisfying dining experience.

Elegant Atmosphere

Main dining rooms often feature a more elegant setting with dress codes that enhance the dining experience. Passengers can enjoy a refined environment that makes meals feel special.

With no reservations needed, an array of menu choices, and the opportunity for social interaction, it provides a memorable part of the cruise journey. If you’re setting sail soon, consider the benefits of main dining as a key element of your trip.

Sea Cloud Spirit to Homeport in Venice Summer 2025

by Julie Bouchner October 24, 2024
written by Julie Bouchner

Sea Cloud Cruises will launch its newest ship, Sea Cloud Spirit, for four roundtrip sailings from Venice during the Summer 2025 season. This marks the first time the cruise line’s largest vessel will offer nine-night voyages featuring an overnight stay in Venice at the Grand Canal.

The itinerary, “The Enchanting Croatian Coast,” includes six ports along Croatia’s stunning coastline and two full days of sailing in the Adriatic Sea. The scheduled sailings are July 24-August 2, August 2-11, August 11-20, and August 20-29.

The August 2-11 sailing will feature a Cabaret Cultivated Journey with artist Travis Moser. Known for his captivating solo performances, Moser will present the inaugural Sea Cloud Cruises Cabaret Cultivated Journey, drawing inspiration from travel and sailing, accompanied by the grand piano aboard Sea Cloud Spirit.

“So much of the musical experience is connected to the venue,” Moser shared about his 2025 performance. “I cannot be more excited to perform in such an intimate space on the beautiful Sea Cloud Spirit, sailing the Adriatic Sea from Venice. I look forward to sharing this travel and musical experience with guests and can’t wait for my accompanist and me to come on board.”

More About the Itinerary

The voyage will feature stops in Venice, a day of sailing, and visits to Šibenik, Dubrovnik, Korčula, Vis, and Hvar in Croatia, culminating with an overnight stay in Venice. Excursion highlights include the Krka waterfalls, late-night access to Dubrovnik until 11 p.m., the harbor of Komiža, and a walk along the historic Rialto Bridge.

“Sailing was a passion of Marjorie Merriweather Post, the creator of the original Sea Cloud. These specially designed Venice roundtrip sailings pay homage to her love for this region,” said Mirell Reyes, president of Sea Cloud Cruises North America. “Post was also a music enthusiast, and we are thrilled to have Travis Moser with us for this inaugural Cabaret Cultivated Journey, performing in the enchanting setting of our Steinway & Sons grand piano.”

Moser’s latest show, “Someday Soon: The Songs of Judy Collins,” recently completed a national tour. His previous show, “Just One Look: The Songs of Linda Ronstadt,” debuted at The Green Room 42 in New York. This will also be Moser’s debut aboard Sea Cloud Spirit.

Upcoming voyages include amenities such as an open bar, all meals with select wines and beers, water sports, port charges, gratuities, and a welcome bottle of champagne. Fall Sale Fares start at $8,545 per person, with a $2,500 credit for staterooms and a $3,500 credit for suites when booked by December 20, 2024. Head to the Sea Cloud website for more information.

Safaris Restore Wilderness

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine October 24, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

Experts once declared Tanzania’s Kwakuchinja wildlife migration route “abandoned.” Due to illegal logging, poaching and over-grazing the once-thriving area between the Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks had become nearly devoid of fauna and flora.

That changed in 2008, when visionary conservationists Fabia Bausch and Nicolas Negre, founders of Chem Chem Safaris, set about restoring the area.

Working with Tanzanian government officials and local communities, they’ve made the region a “model” wildlife corridor.

Now Chem Chem owns three safari camps where guests can enjoy lush vegetation, elephant encounters, wellness walks, and even side-by-side runs with Maasai warriors.

Just the Walking

by Kevin Revolinski October 22, 2024
written by Kevin Revolinski

I first saw the finish line of the Camino while on a road trip in Spain that took me through Santiago de Compostela. In the morning, the first pilgrim arrived, shuffling into the plaza of St. James’ Cathedral, dropping his backpack, sinking to his knees on the cobblestones, shaking with something between tears and joyous laughter. I’ll have what he’s having, I thought.

Four years later, I stood at the top of Spain’s Alto del Perdón — the rather unforgiving Hill of Forgiveness — with steady winds whirling turbines behind me and in front of me, sweeping scenes of azure skies and verdant fields that almost looked computer-generated in their perfection. After a rest and some water, I continued, zigzagging down the other side over cobble and packed dirt. At the bottom in the next town was a café for a snack, a beer, and a ride — my guide stood smiling next to the van like family cheering me on at the end of a marathon. My hotel? All taken care of. Dinner? Reservations made for me. My backpack? Already waiting in my room. Not a bad way to take on the Camino.

A Traditional Pilgrimage

Since the 9th century, the Camino of Santiago (“The Way of St. James”) has drawn pilgrims from all directions — originally to visit the remains of St. James the Apostle, which now rest in his namesake 13th-century cathedral in the city of Santiago de Compostela. Nowadays, travelers come for an assortment of reasons, spiritual and otherwise. Some walk 500 miles or more, a journey that can take weeks or even months depending on the route and starting point. Setting up day-to-day accommodations or even winging it can be overwhelming. Humping everything on your back all day is also not fun. What if you just had to show up with walking shoes? You’re in luck.

In the late 90s, Arizona-born Alex Chang had just quit a job in Spain when he decided to walk the Camino as a departing gift to himself. But the Camino got its hooks in him and he never left. He became a guide, and figuring that most travelers don’t have a couple free months for a through-hike, he founded Fresco Tours, offering a service of supported hiking.

Multiple caminos come to Santiago from all directions, but I came for the Camino Frances, the French Way, as roughly 60 percent of all pilgrims do. “This one has got the most history,” Chang says of this UNESCO World Heritage-listed path. “Unlike the Appalachian Trail, it is not remote. There’s more infrastructure, coffee shops, bars where you stop and get a [Camino passport] stamp.” Fresco also offers itineraries across northern Spain, Portugal, and even the Canary Islands, as well as just the 70-mile home stretch into Santiago, breaking the longer Camino routes into “chapters.” The Spanish Horizons highlights tour puts you in a private bus from the Pyrenees all the way to .…

The Benefits of Laundry Services on Cruises

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 21, 2024
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Cruising allows you to visit multiple destinations without the hassle of unpacking and repacking at each stop. One important service that can significantly enhance your experience on board is laundry. While it often goes unnoticed, taking advantage of laundry services during your trip can make a big difference. Here’s how:

Pack Light

Laundry services let you travel with fewer clothes. Instead of packing outfits for every possible occasion, you can bring a few versatile items and wash them as needed.

Save on Baggage Fees

Traveling light helps you avoid checked baggage fees. Washing clothes on board means you won’t need to bring extra luggage, saving you money.

Stay Fresh

With easy access to laundry, you’ll always have fresh clothes. After a day of exploration, you can quickly wash your outfit to look your best for dinner or events.

Convenience

Cruise lines typically offer laundry services, making it easy to clean your clothes without interrupting your itinerary. Drop off your laundry and focus on enjoying your trip.

Cost-Effective Packages

Many cruise lines offer laundry packages that can save you money if you plan to wash multiple items. These packages often include unlimited washes at a flat rate.

Family Friendly
