Is CBD Allowed on a Cruise Ship?

by Porthole Cruise and Travel April 20, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Health and wellness is one of the most important things we focus on in our lives. We’re always looking for ways to live healthier lives whether that’s through our diets, our mental and emotional health or our daily physical activity. One of the hottest new trends in health and wellness these days are CBD products which is a compound derived from cannabis, otherwise known as marijuana.

One of the questions we get all the time is ‘can I bring my CBD products on a cruise?’ The short answer is no for the time being, but we aren’t ruling out a time in the future where CBD isn’t just allowed, but widely sold on board.

What is CBD?

CBD stands for ‘cannabidiol’ and it’s one of the active compounds found in cannabis plants. You’ve probably heard about it by now as the medical benefits are widely touted by users and advocates alike. Many take over the counter CBD in a variety of forms like gummies, lotions, oils and more. It is said to help alleviate issues with chronic pain, anxiety, insomnia and a laundry list of other ailments.

Sounds great, right? Not so fast.

Can I Bring CBD on a Cruise?

Since cannabis is still illegal at a Federal level, many cruise lines have prohibited CBD on board their ships. Carnival Cruise Lines and Disney Cruise Lines are both examples of lines where CBD is not tolerated. It’s important to check with your cruise line prior to boarding if you are thinking about brining CBD products on board. If you do and they aren’t allowed, most of our cruisers report that the cruise line will make you throw it out or not get on the ship.

RELATED: Five Favorite Cruise Ports to Celebrate 4/20

Many are confused as to why, considering CBD, when made from hemp and contains no THC (the active intoxicant in marijuana), is perfectly legal in all fifty states, it might not be in countries where your cruise stops. You may be able to sneak CBD items on the ship without a ton of trouble, but is it worth it? It may just be a CBD gummy that doesn’t have any intoxicating components, but it is not worth getting fined, or worse, removed from your cruise.

If you do feel the need to sneak it on the ship, DO NOT TAKE IT WITH YOU INTO A PORT. We cannot stress that enough. Legal troubles in a foreign country is a great way to ruin not just your vacation, but everyone you’re traveling with as well. Spending the night in a foreign jail is the absolute last place you want to end up on your vacation.

Always check the list of prohibited items for your cruise line before you sail. Those lists are widely available on each cruise line’s website and if you can’t find it, just give them a call and ask. Remember, it’s always better safe than sorry.

Have you brought CBD on a cruise? Let us know what happened in the comments below!

Eat, Heat and Sleep In Istanbul

by Steve Leland April 19, 2022

Other than a few layovers in the beautiful Istanbul airport, it’s been 20 years since I first set foot on the country’s terra firma. Turkey, or Turkiye as they now refer to it, is a fascinating country with Istanbul proudly depicting the history, culture, food and traditions that make it one of the most popular destinations in the region.

Of course you’ll want to see the iconic Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Palace if it’s your first visit but if time permits I encourage you to delve into the food culture of the city and allow yourself an afternoon to be pampered in the warmth of a Turkish bath.

So Here’s The Meal

We are never ones to be shy about noshing into the food culture and Istanbul serves up a treasure trove of culinary delights. As we have done in so many other destinations we reached out to the food experts at Culinary Backstreets to set the table for a six hour journey into the back alleys and the cafes of the local scene.

We met up with our guide Ugur near a kiosk at the foot of the Galata bridge and set off on foot through a colorful alleyway of sidewalk shops hawking a mashup of plumbing supplies, fishing gear, hoses, electronics and various nuts and bolts. …..Wait…isn’t this supposed to be a food tour?

Ducking into a bustling hallway with men toting boxes of building materials on their backs, Ugur motions for us to have a seat at a single table in the corner. With a knock on the adjoining door, a man emerges, takes note of our group, nods and returns with six glasses of tea. As it turns out, this single table serves as a makeshift private club where local laborers sit and sip a glass of tea. As Ugur produces a bag of freshly baked smit, a sesame crusted Turkish version of a bagel, we become honorary members.

It’s local color at its best but we have places to go and more food to sample. With a stroll under the bridge and through a maze of market stalls we arrive at an obviously very popular bakery for sampling a savory type of turnover, one with a cheese/spinach filling the other a seasoned beef, both encased in a flaky phyllo dough wrapper. A quick bite and a few steps later we step into  a hole in the wall shop, clamber up a narrow stairway and are promptly served a quintessential Turkish coffee. It’s potent and delicious but what’s left at the bottom of the cup is likely where the phrase ‘here’s mud in your eye’ comes from!

The real estate of Turkiye holds the unique distinction of residing on two continents, Europe and Asia, separated by the Bosphorous Strait. Embarking a ferry boat, we cross over to the Asian side and wander through an open air fruit, fish and vegetable market before munching our way through an extravaganza of regional dishes and mezes passed down through family traditions. To finish off a gorge fest of seafood it’s time for a toast with Raki, a crossed rendition of Ouzo, Sambuca or Pastis.  “Serefe” (cheers)!   Here’s to Culinary Backstreets for a memorable day of Two markets, Two Continents

The Heat Is On

There is nothing more synonymous with Turkiye than a Turkish bath and although the city is host to several bath houses, the Hurrem Sultan Hamami is without question the best of the rest. This legendary 500 year old hammam has been restored in pristine style, adhering to strict hygiene protocol yet retaining the authenticity of the experience.

Conveniently located a few hundred yards midway between the Hagia Sofia and the Blue Mosque, the building is divided into nearly identical men and female sections. Prior to the traditional ritual, guests can enjoy a tea before entering the magnificent three level atrium with fountain and dark wood doors that guard private cubicles for changing. Donning the provided robes and sandals and passing through the atrium, the warmth of the white marbled sauna room marinates the skin for the indulgent pampering to come. The marbled floors, walls and sinks with gold taps sets the ambiance as your private therapist begins the ritual that has earned it’s reputation for centuries.

Scrub-A-Dub-Rub

It’s off with the old and on with the new as the entire body is exfoliated along with a soapy massage. Rinse and repeat with warm water, the next installment of an afternoon in paradise is a full body mask for detox.

Making your way to the centerpiece heated marble platform your body is smothered in a layer by layer blanket of warm bubbles. With another massage in the silky and soapy cocoon, you realize why this form of pleasure bathing is so popular. Absorbing the experience, a relaxing rest on a private bed and a platter of fresh fruit follows.

A full body massage by the therapist is an optional addition to the bath and is perfect ending to the experience. Due to the popularity of this specific hammam, reservations are a must.

Istanbul is a crossroads of history and culture and probing those attributes is well worth your time. Helping yourself to a heaping handful of Turkish food and bathing rituals is the perfect way to experience the city.

Your Cruise to Australia is Back On

by Porthole Cruise and Travel April 18, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

It had been more than two years since the last time a cruise ship sailed past the iconic opera house in Sydney Harbor, but that all changed this morning when P&O Cruises’ Pacific Explorer arrived to much fanfare.

Flanked by tug boats on all sides spraying their water cannons, Pacific Explorer arrived in port after making the journey from Cyrus where it waited out the pandemic. Draped across the ships bow was a giant black banner with white letters that read “We’re Home”.

The ship is scheduled to begin her first passenger sailings on May 31st with an itinerary to Brisbane, Australia.

Following the first cruise back, Pacific Explorer is scheduled sail from Sydney on a series of Queensland and South Pacific cruises until late October, replacing Pacific Adventure’s scheduled program. Pacific Adventure will now begin her maiden season of cruises from Sydney on October 22, when Pacific Explorer will sail to Adelaide for a new mini-season of four cruises.

P&O Cruises President Marguerite Fitzgerald explained when P&O Cruises made the announcement last month, that resuming operation was going to be a continual process.

“We’ll be working closely with government agencies on our return which will see us visit about 20 ports around the country after an absence of more than two years,” she said. “Australia has long been one of the world’s strongest cruise markets and as the nation’s only home-grown cruise line we are excited at the thought that our loyal customers will be traveling with us again very soon.”

RELATED: 11 SIGHTS TO SEE IN SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

According to Fitzgerald, there’s more confidence now and it continues to grow as we move further past the pandemic.

“Unfortunately the shifting landscape over the past two years made it very difficult for us to anticipate when and where we would return to cruising,” she continued. “Now we have more clarity and growing confidence, we have reset our plans to stagger the resumption of cruising in a way that enables us to bring our ships and crew back to Australia as smoothly as possible.”

Fitzgerald also noted that the current timeline has her cruise line returning to cruising elsewhere around the South Pacific in August.

An Ideal Princess Cruise Along the California Coast

by Dan and Mikkel Woodruff April 15, 2022
written by Dan and Mikkel Woodruff

Board Princess Cruises for an ideal itinerary that hits on California highlights within seven days. Majestic Princess offers a roundtrip cruise from Los Angeles along the California Coast for an affordable price.

MAJESTIC PRINCESS SAILS ALONG CALIFORNIA

Cruise on Majestic Princess from Los Angeles to San Francisco, Santa Barbara, San Diego, and Ensenada, Mexico, then back to Los Angeles and you’ll also enjoy two days at sea as you discover California and Baja California from the comfort of your stateroom and Princess Cruise’s excursion offerings.

Princess Cruises built Majestic Princess with the Chinese market in mind. As such, passengers will see both English and Asian characters on most signage. However, the onboard focus on excellent food, pampering travelers in the Lotus Spa and The Enclave, and onboard entertainment are universal.

Princess’s MedallionClass, available on all their ships including Majestic Princess, makes it easier than ever to access your room key, contactless ship boarding, and locate your party onboard.

WHY PRINCESS CRUISES CLASSIC CALIFORNIA COAST ITINERARY IS IDEAL

While the pandemic was a tough time for cruisers yearning to go back to the sea, a return to sailing has resulted in a bookings boom. However, not everyone is comfortable traveling outside the country. While this California Coast sailing with Princess goes to Mexico for a few hours on its last day, it’s a very American experience.

A California itinerary is ideal for people who feel most relaxed close to home, whether that home is on the west coast, east coast, or anywhere in between in the United States.

It’s also a fantastic itinerary for people who have seen California by land (perhaps during a road trip) but want to experience it from a cruise ship’s unique perspective. Finally, this is the perfect excuse to visit the 31st state and partake in its cultures, food, and wineries, and see its beautiful mountainous landscape for travelers who have never been to California.

Lastly, this Princess Cruises sailing is perfect for travelers who are not quite ready to dip their toes into international waters for an extended length of time.

While walking around San Francisco, you realize that a local pharmacy or Starbucks is never more than a few blocks away. For travelers who still worry about COVID (or regardless of the pandemic feel at ease closer to home for medical reasons), this is a gratifying element of a cruise in the United States. For example, the local CVS or Walgreens would easily accept your health insurance if you needed to seek medical attention while off the ship.

RELATED: SKY HIGH TRANSATLANTIC CRUISING WITH PRINCESS CRUISES

This Princess Cruises California itinerary also offers something distinctively different: the chance to visit cities of various sizes with distinct characteristics. For example, Santa Barbara’s upscale neighborhoods and beachfront community vastly differ from San Francisco’s startup culture, Chinatown, and financial district. These are also different from San Diego’s navy roots or its neighboring Temecula Valley wine country.

CLASSIC CALIFORNIA COAST EXCURSIONS

Cruisers love to experience a ship’s amenities as part of their vacation experience, no matter where a cruise travels. However, part of the gratification of cruising the west coast, specifically, is the views of the California terrain as you sail to your next port. Getting off the boat in each port is also pleasing as you experience what these cities offer.

You can easily sign up for any of the excursions Princess Cruises offers for an additional fee. Here is a small sampling of the breadth of the available options during a Classic California Coast cruise:

  • Trolly tour of the city of Santa Barbara
  • San Francisco sightseeing & Dim Sum lunch in Chinatown
  • San Diego Zoo at your own pace
  • Wine tour of Temecula, from San Diego

CLASSIC CALIFORNIA CRUISE STARTING PRICE

Based on double occupancy, interior rooms start at $339, and balcony rooms start at $472 per person. Specialty dining, excursions, taxes, fees, and gratuities are additional.

written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

This week, one of the most popular vacation spots in the world opened back up for cruisers when Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America set sail from Honolulu on its first cruise back since the pandemic began in 2020. The ship is the only large vessel cruising the Hawaiian islands and if you’re looking for a way to see a lot of the state in just a week, there might not be a better way! Norwegian is running some pretty sweet perks for booking soon, so don’t miss out!

It’s time for the Cruise Deal of the Week!

7-Day Hawaii Cruise Vacation

Leaving Honolulu, Hawaii every Saturday going forward, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America calls on Maui, the big island of Hawaii, and the island of Kauai over the course of a week. NCL is giving away a few awesome perks for booking soon, like 70% off your your 2nd guest, free open bar, specialty dining, wifi and more.

When the ship sailed for the first time last week, NCL President Harry Sommer was thrilled to bring back the Hawaiian islands to his guests.

“Being the only cruise line to sail year-round from Hawai’i, we’re thrilled to be back at last,” Sommer said. “Pride of America will once again offer thoroughly immersive itineraries and deeply authentic experiences that support business and tourism in Hawai’i, while providing travelers with everything they seek from a vacation in paradise.”

Check out the Freshly Renovated SeaDream II

by Judi Cuervo April 14, 2022
written by Judi Cuervo

I had a friend years back—Audrey—who, though positively stunning, decided to have “some work done.”  And the results were most unfortunate.

I thought of Audrey in January of this year when the award-winning, five-star SeaDream Yacht Club announced that their twin yachts, the 4,260 grt, 112-passenger SeaDream I and SeaDream II, would undergo a $10 million facelift.

For over 20 years, I loved SeaDream’s yachts just as they were but now, after a weeklong Caribbean sailing aboard the newly-renovated SeaDream 2, I see that not all facelifts end up like Audrey’s.  In fact, sometimes they’re exactly what an older girl needs.

SeaDream Yacht Club
Photo: SeaDream Yacht Club

Suites are sweeter:  Gone are the wood trimmed arches, side chairs upholstered with flocked fabric and that recessed little nook that held a small TV between two etched-glass cabinets that, okay, I’ll admit it, gave SeaDream suites of old a grandma’s-living-room vibe.  Today, Seadream’s newly-designed 195-square foot suites are decidedly contemporary, more comfortable and more functional.  Expect lighter woods and recessed sensored lighting for an open, airy feel, along with greater storage and living space and a slick 55” LED TV with a wide selection of movies, TV channels, daily program and other information related to the sailing.    For the techno geek, no adapters are necessary, as USB/USBC charging ports are at the ready, bedside and otherwise.

Dream beds are dreamier:  “Sleeping under the Stars” is, perhaps, SeaDream Yacht Club’s most extraordinary signature experience.  Since the line’s launch, a guest may reserve a Balinese dream bed which, by nightfall, will be outfitted with linens, pillows and a plush comforter, allowing the guest to spend the night under a hypnotic star-filled sky, clad in a pair of personalized SeaDream pajamas.  That was the idea, at least.  The truth, however, is that SeaDream’s original dream beds were firm, very firm,  like-sleeping-on-upholstered-concrete firm and even I, a fiercely devoted SeaDream afficionado, never made it beyond 3:00 a.m.  Those days are gone!  During my recent SeaDream II voyage, I slept all night, peacefully, under the stars atop a cushy new Seora Balinese Dream Bed and woke to a magnificent sunrise.  For those seeking an even softer mattress, foam padding may be requested.

SeaDream Yacht Club
Photo: SeaDream Yacht Club

Join the Club!:  SeaDream Yacht Club’s new Sea Club is a serene, sunbathing space on deck 6 forward, spruced up with all-new lounge chairs, a new four-person Seora Balinese dream bed and two couples’ Jacuzzis that offer unobstructed 360 degree views out to sea.  A delightful “Instagram” wall entrance, two outdoor rainshowers, Tuuci designer hammocks and parasols lead the way at the club’s entrance and, with the Top of the Yacht just next door, guests—like guests everywhere aboard SeaDream—can count on dependable bar service and regularly-offered afternoon snacks like delectable fried shrimp or chocolate chip ice cream sandwiches.  (Other benefits of this location are a nearby restroom and close proximity to the yacht’s golf simulator, a space that is always super air-conditioned—pop in to cool off when the sun gets a bit too intense!)

Hit the deck!:  Or not, actually.  The non-slip surface of SeaDream’s new Bolidt decking just might convince me to go back to stiletto heels.   The decks may look like wood and feel like wood but even after a rain shower, I was sure footed and confident.  (This, from someone who not too long ago slid into a cheerleader-type split while walking on the slick deck of a cruise ship and returned home with a pulled hamstring and an upper thigh that looked like a yellow, brown and blue tattoo sleeve.)

SeaDream Yacht Club
Photo: SeaDream Yacht Club

Cut From A Different Cloth: It’s sort of ironic that the only disappointing thing about my SeaDream II sailing was that its dates conflicted with the New York City Frette Sample Sale, a semi-annual warehouse clearance where luxurious Frette linens, towels and more are offered at wildly expensive prices rather than obscenely expensive ones.  Plush Frette towels, however, were at my fingertips during my SeaDream II sailing while upholstery and cushions sported the fabrics of another Italian design master:  Loro Piana.

Just as exciting as what’s new aboard SeaDream Yacht Club, however, are the things that remain unchanged:  The award-winning cuisine, the friendly and oh-so-capable crew and the intimate atmosphere, so conducive to mingling.  The sports platform, lowered when local regulations and weather conditions permit, still allows guests to jump right into the sea, hop a wave runner, waterski or paddle a kayak directly from the ship.  And in the Caribbean, guests still wade into the surf for the decadent Champagne & Caviar Splash, a raucous celebration that begins with SeaDream’s chef and hotel manager, waist deep in the sea, serving guests caviar-topped blinis from a floating surfboard and concludes with a lavish barbecue lunch beneath a canopy structure that protects from the direct sun.

Congratulations, SeaDream Yacht Club, for continuing to bring guests the magical experiences they’ve come to expect from these splendid little yachts but, now, against a cooler, more contemporary backdrop.

A “facelift,” I’ve learned, is nothing to fear…but I sure won’t say that to Audrey.

Extensive Refurbishments Coming for Oceania Cruises’ Riviera and Marina

by Porthole Cruise and Travel April 13, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Oceania Cruises made a big splash this morning when they announced stem-to-stern re-inspiration of the 1,210-guest ships Riviera and Marina as part of the cruise line’s OceaniaNEXT experience elevation initiatives. Once both renovations are complete in 2023, Oceania Cruises will boast a full fleet of either brand new, or newly renovated ships.

Debuting in December 2022 and November 2023, Riviera and Marina will see updated suites and staterooms and public areas a host of new colors, fabrics, furnishings, lighting and more.

“At Oceania Cruises, we continue to raise the bar and elevate the guest experience at every opportunity. Whether it’s innovative new culinary concepts, immersive new destination experiences, or presenting our guests with ships that are not just better, but better than new, Oceania Cruises sets the standard by which others are judged,” stated Howard Sherman, President & CEO of Oceania Cruises.

According to Oceania Cruises, the newly designed staterooms and suites will be brighter and more spacious with custom furniture, wood finishes and stone bathrooms for a chic and elegant atmosphere that matches style with function. The concierge Level Veranda Staterooms and Veranda Staterooms are the largest standard staterooms in the industry at 291 square feet.

Glamorous Public Spaces

Along with guest rooms, Oceania is pulling out all the stops on renovations and upgrades to public areas as well. Not only will the line reimagine the bars and lounges onboard, but also the Grand Dining Room, which will feature new carpets and leather-covered armchairs. The Polo Grill will remain familiar, but with a few updates like new carpeting, wall coverings and draperies.

The refurbishments won’t have any affect on the line’s warm and personalized service.

“Our people remain at the heart of what we do, and the officers and crew of Oceania Cruises are the finest at sea. While the onboard experience continues to surprise and delight, the way our staff approaches the art of service remains delightfully familiar, warm, and gracious,” added Sherman.

Riviera will debut on December 7, 2022, on a 16-day Mediterranean, Atlantic, and Caribbean cruise from Rome to Miami. Marina will debut on November 13, 2023, on a 7-day cruise from Barcelona to Lisbon.

Québec City Opens Second Brand New Cruise Terminal

by Porthole Cruise and Travel April 12, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Québec City | Photo: Destination Québec Cité

Located just minutes from Old Québec, a new cruise terminal at Port of Québec occupies nearly 100,000 sq. ft., making it the largest in Eastern Canada. This new strategic asset will benefit all cruises on the St. Lawrence River and has the space needed to accommodate the operations of larger ships. With it, the St. Lawrence can position itself as an alternative boarding point on Canada/New England routes departing from Boston or New York.

The leading port of call on the St. Lawrence

Québec City in Eastern Canada is the most popular stop on this route among tourists and cruise lines alike. In 2019, before the pandemic, 260,000 cruise passengers and crew members passed through the port. About 100 port calls are currently scheduled for 2022, 16 of which will include the arrival and departure of new passengers.

With a historic district recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Québec City receives international accolades year after year. Most recently, it was named the top port in the U.S. and Canada by Cruise Critic in 2019 and the top destination on the Canada/New England route by readers of Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine in the 2019 and 2020 Readers’ Choice Awards.

Terminal 30 at Port of Québec
Terminal 30 at Port of Québec | Photo: Destination Québec Cité

Cruise passengers make up 3% of the tourists and visitors who come to Québec City every year. While this may be a small percentage of the total number of tourists the city welcomes annually, cruisers are high-value travelers. Many take the opportunity to stay a few nights before or after their cruises and see more of Québec City. In 2019, the cruise industry generated about 55,000 overnight stays in the city. With the added stopovers, the capital city can expect over $100 million in spending from cruises and related activities.

THE CHALLENGES AHEAD

September and October are the busiest months for the cruise industry, but the Port of Québec and Destination Québec Cité are working to encourage cruise lines to extend their season and discover everything Québec City has to offer. There are tons of things to do in the summer, starting in June—particularly for families.

Funding the needs created every year by the arrival of these vessels also remains a priority issue. The flow of tourists and cruise passengers in Old Québec needs to be properly managed to avoid bottlenecks and keep life enjoyable for locals. A land mobility plan for cruise passengers is also under development to find sustainable transportation solutions, among other things. The tourism companies and partners involved in managing and welcoming cruises meet annually to take stock and see what can be improved. Representatives of local groups are always invited to attend these meetings.

AN ECO-FRIENDLY CHOICE?

Cruise lines were hit hard by the pandemic and are increasingly making efforts to reduce pollution by using alternative fuels and new technologies to filter emissions and cut down on their environmental impact. The success of the cruise industry depends on maintaining the well-being of its host communities and creating collective and sustainable value for all. We all want to contribute to the restoration and protection of the ecosystems that support the cruise industry, but to do so, we need better communication!

A number of companies are planning to start using shore power to reduce pollution. The Port of Québec is currently evaluating the possibilities in this regard.

When the first ships arrive in Québec City in 2022, after a two-year absence, it will be a symbol of victory against the pandemic. The public health standards on ships are more stringent than ever, and the return of Caribbean cruises is going even better than expected. Protocols for isolating cases of COVID-19 have been deployed on board as needed.

Let’s hope that Québec City will continue to offer the warmest welcome to cruisers, with docks full of people waving hello!

Special Needs Group Continues Improving Cruise Accessibility

by Porthole Cruise and Travel April 12, 2022

One of the industry’s biggest advocates for cruise accessibility is the Special Needs Group, a medical equipment and supply company that works as the leading global provider of wheelchair, scooter, oxygen and other special needs equipment rentals on board cruise ships.

Today, they’ve announced a new product available for cruisers aimed at making getting around a whole lot easier. Two new ultra-light wheelchairs, the lightest in the world, are available for guests across major cruise lines even land tours or vacations in the South Florida area.

Special Needs Group has helped countless individuals enjoy their vacation to the fullest and it looks like that commitment isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Special Needs Group

“As a full-fledged medical equipment and supply company with a global reach, we are always looking for innovative products for use at home or while vacationing,” stated Andrew J. Garnett, founder, president and CEO of Special Needs Group®/Special Needs at Sea®. “We are extremely excited about our new line of ultra-light mobility equipment with the first in the new category being the Standard and XL wheelchairs.”

About the World’s Lightest Wheelchairs

The Ultra-Light Standard supports an individual up to 220 pounds, and the Ultra-Light XL has a capacity of 350 pounds. The frame of the standard wheelchair weighs only 13.5lbs, while the XL’s frame is just over 15lbs. The seat widths of the Standard and XL are 18” and 22” wide respectively. The ultra-light models, made of unique luxurious materials, offer pop- off wheels, which allow each of the wheelchairs to be easily transported in any vehicle, while also being able to easily propel and push.

RELATED: Special Needs Group: Making Vacation Possible

In addition to being ultra-light, the wheelchairs feature wheel locks, located in the front of the frame allowing accessibility by the individual in the seat. This prevents the wheelchair from rolling forward or backward. The handbrakes are highlighted by an integrated braking system which provide the family member, friend, and/or caregiver control, security, and convenience. Individuals renting or purchasing will also have different seat and back cushion options.

Hawaii Cruises Return Onboard Pride of America

by Porthole Cruise and Travel April 11, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

One of the most unique cruise experiences out there is back sailing after a pandemic pause in operation. Pride of America from Norwegian Cruise Line returned to service from Honolulu, Hawaii over the weekend, the fifteenth ship from the cruise line to resume sailing.

The only large ship sailing Hawaiian island itineraries, Pride of America  sails weekly seven-day, roundtrip voyages from Honolulu, giving guests nearly 100 hours of port time across all four islands in a week’s span. The itinerary includes overnights in Maui and Kauai and cruising along the Nāpali Coast. NCL has two remaining ships that will be returning to service, both in early May, which will complete the cruise line’s comeback.

“Being the only cruise line to sail year-round from Hawai’i, we’re thrilled to be back at last,” said Norwegian Cruise Line President and Chief Executive Officer Harry Sommer. “Pride of America will once again offer thoroughly immersive itineraries and deeply authentic experiences that support business and tourism in Hawai’i, while providing travelers with everything they seek from a vacation in paradise.”

TRAVELING TO HAWAII

Hawaii has slowly opened up to tourism through a gradual relaxation of COVID-19 protocols. The state is also one of the most-vaccinated states, with nearly 78% of citizens having received their shots. As of March 25, 2022, there are no COVID-related requirements for arriving domestic passengers and there is no longer an indoor mask mandate.

Sky High Transatlantic Cruising with Princess Cruises

by Steve Leland April 11, 2022
written by Steve Leland

A transatlantic cruise from Ft.Lauderdale to Southampton, U.K. affords the perfect opportunity to assess what makes Princess Cruises the cruise line of choice for its thousands of devoted followers. It comes as no surprise that a stress free itinerary of 16 days capped off with engaging ports of call culminates with me becoming one of them.

I can”t explain why in forty years of cruising I’d never set foot on a Princess ship but now realize what I’ve been missing. Neo-traditional best describes a newly discovered cruise experience aboard the 3,660 passenger Sky Princess.  The highly respected cruise brand has blended time tested cruise traditions into an invigorated product that defies the tendency of gimmickry prevalent in other lines, yet embraces innovative trends that define modern day cruising.

The technology driven MedallionClass initiative results in a smart ship experience. Touch free boarding, room key, contactless payment and even locating your loved ones onboard provides for effortless reality with a quarter sized wearable disk shape device. The MedallionClass all in one app creates a playbook and ship guide at your fingertips.

Looking Up At The Sky

Launched in 2019 shortly before the pandemic pause, a glimpse of the ship’s exterior aesthetic displays a virtual eight deck wall of deluxe balconied staterooms, a sleek look that could easily be interchangeable with other ships of its size. But one step inside and all eyes are drawn to the Piazza, the ship’s gorgeous multilevel atrium.

An artist’s palette of soft gold, ivory and yellow hues with tasteful lighting and rich wood accents paints a backdrop to the elegant spiral stairways that weave their way upward, framing the warm ambiance of the centerpiece venue. A small offset stage contributes an entertainment component with jazz and easy listening quartets as well as a classical string duo.

Flanked by a gelato shop, Vines Wine Bar and the International Cafe on the lower level, one deck up you’ll discover Alfredo’s Pizzeria and the Ocean Terrace sushi bar offering intermission bites between or before meal times. The French inspired  Bistro Sur La Mer and Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria provide refined dining opportunities close to the action.

A Taste of Elegance

While reservations for specific restaurants are available, the Dine My Way program allows for open seating meal times in the ship’s Cielo and Estrella main restaurants. Club Class stateroom guests enjoy complimentary access to personalized service in the more intimate Soleil Restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The highly acclaimed Crown Grill steakhouse restaurant goes well beyond exceptionally prepared top cuts of aged beef by offering creative seafood entrees and exclusive appetizers like the Black and Blue French Onion Soup prepared with Roquefort blue cheese and Jack Daniels black label whiskey.

Princess Cruises earns high praise from their hallmark Chef’s Table Lumiere, an opportunity to savor an extravagant gastronomic adventure that will tickle intrepid tastebuds. Dine in elegance at an elaborately decorated table with service inspired by Michelin style traditions. Hosted by the ship’s maitre’d” and executive chef, it is a multi course presentation of culinary creations and paired vintage wines and champagne. Reservations are a must as the event is limited to twelve persons per sitting.

Activity In and Out

Relaxation is implied but if you are looking for something to entertain leisure time there are virtual non-stop activities. Inside decks six and seven are bustling thoroughfares of entertainment. Take Five is a smaller club like lounge that features a jazz trio as well as musical performances by the ship’s diverse musicians. The Vista Lounge plays host to a talented  house band playing all genres of music for listening and dancing while night owls can dance till the wee hours with the ship’s DJ. The quest to harness Lady Luck is always a possibility in the ship’s bustling casino.

Princess Live is game show central with ongoing trivia contests, dance lessons and audience participation activities and a lineup of shows that spotlight guest entertainers, comedians and elaborate production shows are featured nightly in the Princess Theater.

Outside, sun seekers will find a slice of sun drenched paradise by the twin pools, surrounded by hot tubs. Without ever leaving your lounge chair you can watch daily afternoon concerts on the giant projection screen that towers overhead with movies under the stars playing nightly. If you feel the need to get away, make your way to the adults only Sanctuary pool, exactly what the name implies.  Work on your pickle ball skills on a double court or putt around or play bocce ball on the open deck courts.

Me Time

Well worn excuses vanish with a well equipped gym, fitness programs and daily Zumba classes but no alibis are needed to reward yourself with a dose of deserved pampering in the Lotus Spa. Trained therapists reinvigorate worn muscles in every imaginable treatment and an afternoon in the Enclave is time well spent. This suite of seclusion features a bubbling hydrothermal pool, a Turkish hammam, a steamy Roman style Calderian and a dry heat Lanconium.  Cocoon yourself into the warmth of the heated ceramic tile loungers for an unforgettable day of indulgence.

The appeal of exotic destinations in a port intensive cruise is certainly understandable but if time allows, an extended cruise with multiple days at sea provides detoxification from everyday routine and introspect into the benefits of stress free travel.

Cruises to Canada are Finally Back

by Porthole Cruise and Travel April 8, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Tomorrow, Saturday, April 9, will be the first time a large cruise ship has called on a Canadian port since the start of the pandemic. Holland America Line will call on Victoria, British Columbia with Koningsdam and then end it’s 7-day itinerary the next day at Port of Vancouver.

It’s been over 900 days since a cruise ship called at Victoria and local officials along with Holland America Line President Gus Antorcha will  be on hand in both Victoria and Vancouver to celebrate the return to Canadian cruising and address the importance Canada and Alaska to Holland America Line.

“We are thrilled to be the first cruise line back into Canada after such a long absence, and we look forward to celebrating a great moment for everyone who loves to travel and for those in Canada and Alaska whose livelihoods depend on tourism,” said Gus Antorcha, president of Holland America Line. “Holland America Line has a robust schedule of cruises that explore Canadian ports on both coasts with Alaska, Hawaii, transatlantic and Canada and New England itineraries.”

HOLLAND AMERICA LINE’S CANADIAN CRUISE SEASON

For their 2022 Canada and Alaska season, six Holland America Line ships will call on Victoria and Vancouver. In total, the six ships will make 45 calls at Victoria and bring nearly 75,000 guests to the port, and 76 cruises begin or end at Vancouver, bringing around 140,000 guests to the port.

For Canada and New England cruising on the East Coast, two ships return in May and cruise between Boston, Massachusetts, and Quebec City or Montreal, Quebec. Nieuw Statendam and Zaandam offer itineraries ranging from seven to 24 days to more than 12 Canadian ports.

In total for 2022, Holland America Line operates 141 cruises on eight ships in Canada with more than 250,000 guests visiting both coasts.

Cruise Deal of the Week – April 8, 2022

by Porthole Cruise and Travel April 8, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Alaska season is finally upon us! There are numerous ships sailing in the coming weeks and they’ll be full of excited cruisers braving the early season chill for a glimpse of the real wild of America’s largest state.

It’s been a long time since cruise ships pulled into ports like Ketchikan or Skagway for a full season so if you do have one booked, make sure to buy local in as many ports as you can! It means a lot to the people who struggled to make ends meet with limited tourism for the past two years.

If you’re looking for a unique Alaska small ship cruise experience, Windstar Cruises has a sailing for you! It’s time for the Cruise Deal of the Week!

11-Day Alaska Itinerary from Windstar Cruises

Now that our neighbors up north in Canada have opened up their borders to cruise lines, there are a whole bunch of options to either call on, or even cruise from, a port in Canada. On May 20th, Windstar Cruises Star Breeze is sailing from Vancouver on an 11-day voyage to a number of ports in Alaska and Canada. The ship calls on Seymour Narrows, Ketchikan, Wrangell, Juneau, Tracy Arm, Inian Islands, Icy Strait, Misty Fjords, and Prince Rupert before returning to Vancouver. Interior rooms start at $3269 and balcony staterooms are $4359 per person.

Star Breeze recently underwent a major refurbishment as part of a new initiative to update the fleet. The ship was cut in two down the center and pulled apart, then a prefabricated midsection is inserted and fastened into place. Windstar also updated public spaces, the fitness center and spa on board.

This Cruise Line Has 1,390 Summer Shore Excursion Options

by Porthole Cruise and Travel April 7, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Generally speaking, having options is a good thing. MSC Cruises has taken that notion and ran with it when it comes to their lineup of shore excursion options for Summer 2022.

This is not a typo; the cruise line is offering 1,390 unique excursions across their fleet. One thousand three hundred and ninety!

That means there’s something for families, solo travelers, foodies, adrenaline junkies, history buffs and everyone in between! Guests can also explore ashore by themselves in all destinations, subject to the regulations of local authorities.

MSC Cruises’ Shore Excursions

These shore excursions include a new tour category, first introduced in 2020, called PROTECTOURS where keeping the Earth beautiful goes hand in hand with a tour curated but the cruise line. In fact, nearly 70% of MSC Cruises shore excursions involve activities with zero environmental impact while others include sustainable practices like beach cleaning or planting trees.

There will be more than 200 excursions offered across the line’s Caribbean cruise itineraries, more than 540 in the Mediterranean, more than 630 in Northern Europe and another 20 at the cruise line’s private island Ocean Cay Marine Reserve.

Marialuisa Iaccarino, Head of Shore Excursions for MSC Cruises, explained why shore excursions are such a focus for the cruise line.

“We are dedicated to offering an outstanding range of high-quality shore excursions to guests, so we’re proud to be offering guests the widest range ever this summer. Shore excursions give guests the freedom to make the most of every moment ashore during their holiday – to take in local cultures, taste local flavors, and see local landmarks. Everyone is looking for something that interests them, and this is why it is so important that there’s an excellent variety to choose from, so there’s something perfect for everyone. Guests can expect quality and value, comfort and convenience, as well as the ultimate peace of mind when they choose to book an excursion with us,” she said.

Some of the highlighted excursions included a food tour in San Juan, a Mayan ruins tour in Costa Maya, a sightseeing tour in Paris, Norwegian waterfall tours, bathing in the Dead Sea and so much more.

If you want to check out the full list of excursions and itineraries, the MSC Cruises website has all the info you need. Then leave us a comment on which excursion you’d most like to do!

Norwegian Cruise Line Launches First Cruise Industry NFT Collection

by Porthole Cruise and Travel April 6, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

According to a press release from Norwegian Cruise Line, the cruise provider “will sail into the Metaverse with the launch of the cruise industry’s first collection of NFTs.”

To celebrate the launch of the upcoming Norwegian Prima, NCL is launching an online NFT marketplace on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, at 9 a.m. ET where NFT art pieces created by Manuel Di Rita, widely known as “Peeta,” the Italian artist who designed the hull art on the record-breaking Norwegian Prima and her sister vessel Norwegian Viva, will be for sale.

The first piece in the NFT collection resembles the hull art on Norwegian Prima and the additional five NFT pieces showcase some of the innovative 3D designs often depicted in Peeta’s works and will be featured aboard Norwegian Prima including in the ship’s three-level Penrose Atrium.

“We are so excited to partner with Peeta on this first for our brand and for the industry,” said NCL President and CEO Harry Sommer. “Peeta is a talented artist who has brought the magic and beauty of the ocean to our ships, so we are happy to share this with our guests and to donate the proceeds of this new venture to Teach For America, an organization and a cause very near and dear to our hearts.”

“We strive to adopt the most cutting-edge technology at Norwegian Cruise Line and strongly believe that providing our guests the opportunity to own digital assets that connect them with an unforgettable cruise experience is an essential step forward,” says Scott Piccolo, Chief Digital Experience Officer at Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH). “We are incredibly proud to work with Peeta on the cruise industry’s first ever NFT collection.”

All proceeds from the NFT auction and sales will be donated to Teach For America. Teach For America finds, develops, and supports a network of leaders who expand opportunity for children from classrooms, schools, and every sector and field that shapes the broader systems in which schools operate.

“Teach For America embraces innovation and industry leaders, and we are especially proud of the work Norwegian Cruise Line has done to celebrate and recognize teachers through its annual NCL Giving Joy campaign, which celebrates the intersection of travel and education,” said LaKeisha Wells-Palmer, Executive Director of Teach For America Miami-Dade. “We’re grateful for the commitment to education in our community. The proceeds from the sales of these beautiful NFTs will help Teach For America recruit and develop more teachers for students in Miami-Dade.”

Golden Horizon Raises Sail

by Teresa Machan April 6, 2022
written by Teresa Machan

Leaden skies over Dover’s famous chalk cliffs had dashed hopes for the billed “sunset sailaway,” but as a gentle breeze flicked the sails of Golden Horizon and her magnificent frame nudged out of port, excitement rippled across her upper deck.

A cruise along the south coast of the British Isles had never been on my holiday agenda. For a start it would mean cruising on home turf (I live on the south coast of England) and, more to the point, hot tubs and billowing sails call for Caribbean skies and sultry Mediterranean sunsets — not the English Channel. But in a summer season where windows of short-haul travel felt like a privilege, I was simply happy to be at sea again, let alone on a ship as handsome as Golden Horizon.

Sailing on Golden Horizon

Her classic square-rigged design is based on the 1913-built France II — the second-largest commercial sailing ship ever made. This new model is the world’s largest square-rigged sailing ship, but it doesn’t take a title to fall under her spell. Criss-crossed by lines,

her 162-foot-long deck, with its museum-worthy display of polished brass, blocks and tackles, pulleys and ladders, winches and jammers, and nautical knotting, would make a ship chandler weep. Above rides a disjointed curtain of creamy sail cloth — more than 68,000 square feet of it — whipped and stitched and hanging in the breeze.

A paean to traditional seafaring, perhaps, but there are brains behind this beauty. “She was built to sail without propulsion whenever possible,” said Captain Mariusz Szalek, when I went to tour the bridge. Her maximum “under sail” speed of 17 knots is faster than the four-deck ship moves on engine power only (16 knots). Factor in the fuel saving — up to 8.8 tons per day when sailing at full power — and Golden Horizon sounds like a sustainable proposition.

Built in Croatia and operated by new line Tradewinds, Golden Horizon’s debut season should’ve taken her to the Mediterranean and Croatian coasts. It was not to be, however, and she would instead find her sea legs in the English Channel — pottering between Dover, the Isle of Wight, Portland (Dorset), Poole (Dorset), Torquay (Devon), and Harwich (Essex).

Judging by the happy faces and energetic toasting of “bon voyage” cocktails, the other passengers were as delighted as me to be “on holiday” once more, for this short Cowes Week sailing. The friendly, competent crew, beetling about like wound-up bath toys, seemed equally happy to be on the move.

When sailing full, Golden Horizon carries a maximum of 272 passengers in 140 suites and deluxe balcony and outside cabins. Dark wood veneer accented by jewel blues, reds, and gold furnishings channel a traditional nautical vibe. Two single beds in a cozy, but comfy cabin with a pair of porthole windows left little wiggle room but we found a place for everything: likewise in the bijou, shiny bathroom.

The First Morning

Our first morning dawned overcast and still. An overnight sail had taken us into the Solent, just off the port of Cowes, in time for day one of the popular Cowes Week sailing regatta. COVID restrictions kept us at sea, where our ship bobbed like a Dutch Master among Picassos, affording its passengers a front-row view of the preliminary races.

It was a good day to put the ship’s pools and Marina Deck through their paces. The marina platform opens at the stern where, under the keen eye of the water-sports team, a handful of passengers were kayaking or learning how to maneuver a stand-up paddleboard. “Sweep the paddle like an arc,” demonstrated crew member James. One by one, they all fell in. “It’s all about having a go, isn’t it?” one 70-something told me afterwards, insisting I WhatsApp my picture of him to his son.

As well as being equipped with water toys, wetsuits, and snorkel and dive gear, Golden Horizon is the first cruise ship to sail with a Deep Dive pool. Guests can sign up for a one-on-one try dive, a PADI course (itinerary permitting), or benefit from a quick dive refresher. The glass-walled tank drops 18 feet. I watched Dive Master Ash and 12-year-old Helena descend before running down to the small theater to take underwater shots for Helena’s mom.

Madeira’s Cruise Recovery is in Full Swing

by Porthole Cruise and Travel April 6, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

One of the best kept secrets in cruising is the Portuguese island of Madeira, a sub-tropical paradise visited by millions each year for its unique culture, outstanding flora and fauna and a bustling downtown port area with lots to explore. Now that we’re finally putting the pandemic behind us, Madeira has seen an uptick in ship visits and everyone at Port of Madeira is ready to welcome back cruisers to their friendly shores! Prior to the pandemic, the Madeira cruise industry saw well over a million visitors each year and recovery efforts have paid dividends thus far. From the bustling downtown Port of Funchal to the many wineries and restaurants sprawling across the island, Madeira is on the upswing and you’re invited!

Madeira

Where is Madeira and Why is It So Popular?

Part of an archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Portugal, Madeira has a history dating back hundreds of years and has long been a top vacation destination for Europeans thanks to gorgeous scenery and a vibrant culture. Often a stop on transatlantic crossings, Madeira’s main port town of Funchal features lush botanical gardens, history museums, wine cellars and plenty of places to enjoy a bite of local cuisine.

A rich, fertile soil across the island makes it unique for wine and produce farms and visitors travel from all over the world to sample wines made from the island’s Negra Mole grape. Winemakers have grown grapes along the island’s sunny shores for centuries and it remains a popular draw for tourists to this day. Known for its welcoming nature safe for tourists, Madeira is an all-ages island with lots to explore.

Port of Funchal

With two passengers terminals and easy access to the rest of the city, Port of Funchal is the gateway to Madeira. Those unfamiliar with the island need only to venture into the vibrant downtown to immerse themselves in the sights, sounds and flavors of Funchal.

The deep water of the port and sweeping views of Funchal Bay make it a preferred stop for cruise vessels operating from Europe or on a transatlantic itinerary. So far in 2022, Port of Funchal is seeing a cruise return that’s nearing the robust year that was 2019 and it won’t be long now before the island’s economic recovery from the pandemic is complete. In fact, over the past decade, the island has seen an increase in the number of cruises and passengers visiting, which bodes well for the future.

Madeira Cruise Recovery

Tourism is returning all around the world and Madeira’s cruise port is no exception. The island has lifted all entry restrictions for international visitors, meaning there’s never been a better time to visit. Cruise ships full of happy guests are once again disembarking in the port city of Funchal and the city and surrounding area is poised to compete in what is sure to be a competitive cruise market going forward. With nearly unlimited shore excursion options, a beautiful landscape and truly unique culture, the future of cruising to Madeira looks bright!

Fort Lauderdale is Focused on Travel for All

by Porthole Cruise and Travel April 5, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Here at Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine, we’ve long been fans of the phrase “cruising is for everyone.” Travel, in general, is something that should be open and accessible to all who are curious enough to step foot in a new place.

One tourism board is reaffirming their commitment to travel for all in spite of a new law in the state of Florida that is set on labeling members of the LGBTQ+ community as different from everyone else.

Visit Lauderdale, the tourism board for Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is making it known that they’re committed to their slogan of welcoming  “Everyone Under the Sun,” … and that means everyone. Greater Fort Lauderdale, and South Florida in general, continues to be a progressive destination recognized throughout the tourism industry for its thought leadership and inclusive nature despite a new law that will cause tangible harm to the LGBTQ+ community.

“Travel transcends politics and decisions made at the state level do not always align with our mission, values, and community. Visitors to Greater Fort Lauderdale can be assured they are in a place where diversity, inclusion and acceptance is actively championed as an established way of life that is fully ingrained throughout our community. We encourage you to stand with us in support of the more than 88,000 tourism industry employees who work in our hotels, restaurants, venues, and attractions by booking your trip now. The Visit Lauderdale slogan, “Everyone Under the Sun,” reflects the open and welcoming nature of our community and when we say “Everyone Under the Sun” we mean it,” said Stacy Ritter, president and CEO of Visit Lauderdale.

FLORIDA’S PARENTAL RIGHTS IN EDUCATION BILL

House Bill 1557, known colloquially around the country as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, prohibits “classroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity” in Florida’s primary schools.

The goal, according to Governor Ron DeSantis, is to “make sure that parents are able to send their kid to kindergarten without having some of this stuff injected into their school curriculum.”

Despite the fear of “stuff,” sexual education has already been banned in the state until fifth grade, so it seems allowing kindergarteners to know that members of the LGBTQ+ community exist in the first place is the “stuff” we’re really talking about.

It would then appear the law is operating under the notion that seeing or hearing from someone who identifies with the LGBTQ+ community could override the very obvious fact that sexual orientation is not a choice. This is antiquated thinking at best; dangerous, ignorant and hateful at worst.

Visit Lauderdale’s commitment to inclusive travel not just now, but for the past 25 years, should be a blueprint for tourism boards and those in the hospitality space moving forward. If you’d like to help Visit Lauderdale spread the word, use the hashtags #WeAreVL and #EveryoneUnderTheSun on social media!

Port of Boston Begins 2022 Cruise Season

by Porthole Cruise and Travel April 4, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

For the first time in two years, Port of Boston is ready for a full season of cruising! Today, the port welcomed the first cruise ship to the Port of Boston, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Pearl.

The ship is making her maiden voyage to Flynn Cruiseport Boston, her homeport through November with weekly sailings between Boston and Bermuda.

Cruising Returns to Port of Boston

According to the Massachusetts Port Authority, Flynn Cruiseport Boston generates $135.5 million in annual economic impact and supports 2,200 jobs in the local community.

“We are delighted to welcome our cruise partners back to Boston and support the recovery of the travel and tourism industry in the City and the Commonwealth,” said Massport CEO Lisa Wieland.

This year, Port of Boston will welcome 125 ships across 19 cruise lines, including 12 maiden calls. For the first time, Flynn Cruiseport Boston will have four cruise lines offering five homeport ships and voyages:

  • Norwegian Cruise Line: Norwegian Pearl starts April 4th
  • Holland America: Zaandam starts May 15th and Nieuw Statendam starts August 3rd
  • Celebrity Cruises: Celebrity Summit starts August 31st
  • Royal Caribbean International: Voyager of the Seas starts September 18th

Two executives from major cruise lines weighed in on the importance of the Port of Boston and cruising New England.

“Our Great Cruise Comeback not only celebrates the return of our vessels and resilience of our team members worldwide, but also underscores the incredible partnership we have with our destinations around the world,” said Norwegian Cruise Line President and Chief Executive Officer Harry Sommer. “To jumpstart the cruise season for Massport is another major milestone for the U.S. cruise industry and we’re honored to commemorate that moment with Norwegian Pearl’s inaugural voyage from Flynn Cruiseport Boston.”

“Holland America Line is thrilled to once again sail from Boston on our Canada and New England cruises,” said Gus Antorcha, president, Holland America Line. “Our summer sailings are popular with couples, families and friends that love the rich history of this region, while the fall foliage departures attract those looking for a bucket-list experience with the beautiful colors of the season.”

Protocols for Safe Cruising

In preparation for cruising’s return, Massport installed a new state-of-the-art passenger boarding bridge at the cruise terminal last November. This new infrastructure improvement allows Flynn Cruiseport Boston to welcome larger ships this season that were previously unable to call on Boston, such as Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Breakaway and Princess Cruises’ Enchanted Princess. Since 2017, Massport has been working with the Army Corps of Engineers to dredge Boston Harbor, to deepen the Reserved Channel, and expand the Turning Basin to 1,725 feet.

“We are proud to work with our cruise lines to ensure Flynn Cruiseport Boston remains the region’s cruise gateway with diverse destination offerings that cater to passengers of all kinds,” said Lauren Gleason, Deputy Port Director, Business Development. “With Boston Logan International Airport located just across the Harbor, Flynn Cruiseport Boston provides convenient access to cruise passengers flying in to explore the City and the many destinations accessible from our cruise gateway, including the popular Canada-New England itinerary.”
