Cruise Industry Commits to Pursue Net-Zero Carbon for Global Cruising by 2050

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 19, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

The prime voice of the global cruise industry, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), has released the results of its 2022 Global Cruise Industry Environmental Technologies and Practices Report. The report specifies the significant progress towards reaching the industry’s goal of net-zero carbon cruising on a global level by 2050.

The 2022 report strengthens the cruise industry’s credentials as innovators and endorsers of environmentally friendly technology. Some examples in the report include the increasing number of ships launching over the new few years that will incorporate zero-emissions propulsion when available, along with the expansion of investments to equip ships to plug into shoreside electricity where its available. More than 15% of the vessels set to launch over the next five years will be fully equipped to integrate fuel cells or batteries and 85% of CLIA-member vessels coming online between now and 2028 will be able to plug into shoreside electricity. This will significantly impact the sustainability of these vessels by allowing engines to switch off at berth for a serious decline in emissions.

President, and CEO, CLIA, Kelly Craighead said “Innovation and engineering are at the heart of the industry’s vision for net zero carbon cruising. The cruise industry continues to lead the way by investing billions to incorporate new technologies, accelerate development of sustainable marine fuels—in particular, engines capable of using sustainable marine fuels—and enable shoreside electricity connectivity on existing and new ships.   These are the fundamental building blocks for the decarbonisation of global shipping, and we are acting now for the future.”

Although CLIA has made significant progress thus far, the report makes clear that a change to sustainable marine fuels is crucial in reaching the maritime industry’s emission reduction goals and emphasizes the need for governments to support research efforts to quicken the development of these fuels so that they are safe, easily accessible, and viable for use. CLIA is also a key supporting organization to the Getting to Zero Coalition’s Call to Action for Decarbonization of Shipping. CLIA’s backing is in addition to the leadership of its individual cruise line members and their partnerships with other coalitions and organizations that continue to work tirelessly to discover innovative and critical decarbonization solutions.

RELATED: GREEN SEAS: NORWAY’S WAVE OF ENVIRONMENTAL INNOVATION

“The cruise industry has always been and will continue to be at the cutting edge of innovation when it comes to environmental and maritime technologies,” said Chairman of CLIA Global, Pierfrancesco Vago. “For this next phase of our journey to net-zero as an industry, we now need clear support from governments and policy-makers to ensure that the right infrastructure is developed also on land and to encourage the investment and innovation that will be required for the development of sustainable marine fuels at scale.”

Here are some ways listed in Cruise Line’s International Association’s 2022 report that will continue to reduce emissions:

  • Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) Fuel: The 2022 report found that 61% of new-build capacity will rely on liquified natural gas (LNG) for primary propulsion. The use of LNG results in 95% to 100% fewer particulate matter emissions, almost 0 sulphur emissions, and an 85% reduction in nitrogen emissions. LNG currently provides benefits, but it also allows LNG-ready vessels to adapt to a future generation of sustainable and eco-friendly marine fuels.
  • Shore-side Power Capability: Cruise lines have continually made significant investments for vessels to have the option to connect to shoreside electricity, allowing engines to be switched off while in port. 40% of the global capacity are fitted to operate on shore-side electricity in the 29 ports worldwide in at least one berth in the port, which is less than 2% of the world’s ports. Between now and 2028, 98% of the new build capacity on order book is committed to being fitted with either shore-side electricity systems or vows to add shore-side power in the future.
  • Advanced Wastewater Treatment Systems: 100% of newly built vessels have been instructed to have advanced wastewater treatment systems. Currently, 78% of the CLIA ocean-going cruise line fleet capacity is served by advanced wastewater treatment systems, which is a 9% increase compared to 2021.
  • Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS): More than 79% of global capacity makes use of EGCS to meet or even exceed air emissions standards, resulting in an increase in capacity of 7% compared to the 2021 report. 88% of the capacity of non-LNG builds will have EGCS installed, benefitting the already historic level of investments

Announced earlier this year, the cruise line industry is committed to pursuing net-zero carbon cruising on a global level by 2050. This target is consistent with the Paris Agreement’s goal and is supported by the industry’s intermediary objective to reduce the rate of carbon by 40% across the global fleet by 2030 compared to 2008. This objective is consistent with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Initial Strategy for GHG reduction.

This Classic Rock Music Cruise Lets You Sail with Rock Legends

by Judi Cuervo October 19, 2022
written by Judi Cuervo

In 1976, when I started cruising, I’d never have believed that one day I’d be sailing the Caribbean with some of my rock music idols.  But, thanks to On the Blue classic rock music cruise, I’ll be doing just that aboard the Norwegian Pearl from January 28-February 2nd.

Before I get into the details about this fantastic music festival at sea, just let me say that when I started cruising, the most a rock music fan could hope for was a frightfully awful rendition of “Twist & Shout” by the ship’s orchestra or a maybe a couple of Beatles ballads performed by a third-rate vocalist at the piano bar.

But, now, cruise lines have recognized that classic rock is the best music ever made…that, or maybe they just realize that we baby boomers represent a huge segment of cruising’s most dedicated guests and we want to hear the hits that form the cherished soundtrack of our youth.

Today, many ships even have venues dedicated to the music we love:  Among them, Holland America’s Rolling Stone Rock Room (Rotterdam, Nieuw Statendam and Koningsdam) and Norwegian Cruise Lines’ Beatles-inspired Cavern Club (Norwegian Bliss, Epic, Encore and Joy).  And, thanks to technology, DJs need not rely on a stack of vinyl LPs, but can access every single song that played on the jukeboxes of the bars that we, as teenagers, sneaked into with phony ID.  During one recent sailing, I requested a Kinks song and in minutes, I was swaying to “Waterloo Sunset; on another, I requested a Men Without Hats tune and in no time at all, I was doing the Safety Dance on the deck of SeaDream II.

For the classic-rock obsessed, could it possibly get any better??

Yes, it can, thanks to On the Blue, an ocean-going five-day classic rock music festival that features full concerts by the very artists (the ones that are still alive, at least) who performed so many of the songs we grew up with!

RELATED: FLOATS MY BOAT: THE BOATY WEEKENDER MUSIC CRUISE

The 2019 On the Blue sailing was, like everything fun and exciting, cancelled by the pandemic, but now On the Blue is back, with a 2023 celebration subtitled “Reunion,” a reunion of the fans and the artists who have sailed this full-ship charter almost annually since its 2013 debut.

Imagine:  Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues crooning “Nights in White Satin” and “Question” as you sail from Miami to Belize and Costa Maya.  The Zombies performing “She’s Not There” and “Time of the Season” on the pool deck under the stars.  Al Stewart bringing you “Year of the Cat,” its iconic saxophone solo filling the ship’s extravagant theater.  Singing along with Alan Parsons’ “Eye in the Sky” or with Dave Mason as he belts out Traffic’s “Feelin’ Alright.”  Even more acts will be rockin’ the boat aboard this year’s On the Blue (nearly 30 in all), Renaissance, The Lovin’ Spoonful, The Little River Band, Orleans, Ambrosia, Lighthouse and Starship with Mickey Thomas among them.

And if a dizzying schedule of full concerts isn’t enough, count on getting up close and personal with the artists through photo experiences and, seriously, everywhere around the ship.  Pull out your wildest gear on theme nights, get down and funky at the Mellow Yellow Dance Party where you can dust off all the moves you thought you had forgotten, and maybe even discover hidden artistic talents during a “Painting with Rock Stars” session.

And, best of all, because this is a full-ship charter, you can be sure that all of your fellow guests are just as rock-obsessed as you are!

Overview

Built for some of the world’s most remote locations, Ocean Victory is an expedition cruise ship offering the latest in ship technology, the very best in adventure and scientific gear and a plethora of comfort and amenities for those who appreciate a higher-end cruising experience. As much a learning experience as any you’ll find at sea, Ocean Victory has features that bring guests a deeper level of understanding of the regions they’re traveling, and the bevy of experts on board are readily available to enhance the experience both on the ship and when out exploring off-the-beaten path locations.

Features like the cleanest burning fuel in the cruise industry and dynamic positioning and stabilization systems make for a more eco-friendly journey that leaves the environment as pristine as it was meant to be.

With multiple stateroom options, all spacious with plenty of storage capacity, guests can curate their vacation based on needs and preferences, including individual ability levels. With an older guest demographic, you won’t find boisterous nightlife or a crowded pool deck, making for a more laid-back experience coupled with adventure both on and off the ship.

With a guest capacity under 200 people and around a 2-1 guest-to-crew ratio, exceptional service was abound from the stateroom attendants and dining staff to the front desk and everywhere in between.

Editor’s Note: Ocean Victory is a chartered vessel operated half the year by American Queen Voyages and the other half by Albatros Expeditions. The sailing we joined was under the operation of American Queen Voyages. Most of the bridge, dining service and hospitality staff remain the same year-round while the naturalist experts, excursion guides and representatives on board from each cruise line will rotate depending on which company is currently in operation.

Cuisine

Editor’s Note: The sailing we reviewed was operated by American Queen Voyages. Menus, dining times and service may differ when the ship is under another operation, though dining locations on board will not.

Dining on board Ocean Victory starts early at 6am with the coffee bar in the deck 5 Expedition Lecture Room. An all-in-one coffee machine can make you a classic drip, espresso, cappuccino, hot chocolate and a number of other specialty coffee drinks with just a touch of the screen. Also available are a variety of teas and a water/ice dispenser which is very handy for filling a water bottle before a day ashore. Some pastries and fruit were also available on certain days, though guests will have to wait until 7am for the full breakfast buffet.

Breakfast in the main dining room consisted of a number of both hot and cold offerings like a cereal and oatmeal bar with various fruit and nut toppings, a selection of fresh fruits and a variety of breads with a self-service toaster. Hot offerings like eggs, bacon, and home fries remained consistent throughout while specialty items such as breakfast tacos, eggs benedict, pancakes, waffles, sausages, breakfast burritos and more rotated daily throughout the cruise. Orange, cranberry and apple juice are available via self-service or ordered through the waiter. There was no made-to-order breakfast menu available.

A buffet-style lunch was held in the smaller, specialty restaurant on deck 8 starting at Noon and the options varied daily, though there was always a selection of deli meats and cheeses, a salad bar with a number of vegetables and dressings available and a dessert bar with pies, cakes and ice cream. Guests can expect to find various fish, chicken and beef dishes available along with options like potato or macaroni salad. On one day of the sailing, the dining staff set up a fresh sushi bar with several different types of rolls. The restaurant had both indoor and outdoor seating, though on a warm day, many of the tables outside were in the sun, so get there early if you like sitting in the shade or indoors.

A highlight of each sailing is a deck barbecue with options like ribs, roasted chicken, and even a full pig roast with various barbecue sauces for each item. Also available during the once-a-sailing deck barbecue were burgers, sausages, roasted vegetables and fresh breads. Pending the weather, the deck barbecue is held outside on the pool deck or inside the specialty restaurant.

A 3pm tea featured a selection of finger sandwiches ranging from deli meats to egg and tuna salad. Tea time also had a selection of sweet treats like cookies, pie and cakes for guests to enjoy.

Starting at 5pm, pre-dinner cocktail hour and hors d’oeuvres like fried wontons, breads with various cheeses and spreads, pork loin slices, calamari and more were available in the deck 5 lounge. There was also a smoothie shot of the day presented alongside the snacks. The daily debrief with a presentation of the next day’s schedule happened at 6pm.

Dinner began at 6:30 following the briefing and guests entering the dining room could view a preview of each dish on that night’s menu on a sidebar prior to seating. Seating was open with plenty of space and different guest groups often sat with each other to fill out larger tables.

The dinner menu consisted of both a red and white wine selection for the evening, though guests can request a specific vino not on the menu that evening. There were always two appetizer options, two soups, two salads and four entrees available on the menu which rotated daily as well as a “always available” menu consisting of a grilled lobster tail, prime sirloin, grilled chicken breast, grilled Alaskan salmon, the chef’s vegetable, a baked potato and french fries.

Artfully presented and specifically labeled for allergens like nuts, fish or eggs, the main courses were often large and varied from poultry and beef entrees to fish like salmon, halibut and crab legs. One of the four entrees available was always pasta like fettuccine or gnocchi. The dessert menu featured a few staples like ice cream, sherbert, and a cheese plate with new, specialty options nightly consisting of various cakes, pies, puddings and more.

The restaurant stops seating at 8pm which is important to note as room service is only available during main dining hours. If you’re the kind of person who gets late-night hankerings, eating late is the better option as there is no dining available to guests after 8pm.

Features

The very first feature guests will notice when they arrive at port for embarkation is Ocean Victory’s unique bow shape. Called an X-Bow, the front of the ship appears a bit like the beak of a bird, gradually sloping down from the bridge down to the surface of the water. Designed by Ulstein Group, a shipbuilding company with more than 100 years in business, the bow serves to make the ship easier to handle when seas are rough, as well as reduce drag and improve fuel efficiency. It also stands out at the pier or floating in a bay as the shape and two-tone blue color scheme is certainly eye-catching.

A pair of fin stabilizers built by Rolls-Royce helps reduce the roll felt on board while in motion and a very high-tech positioning system allows for a “virtual anchoring”, meaning the ship can remain within 2 meters of its intended position at all times without having to drop anchor and disturb the ocean floor.

Of the decks accessible to passengers, guests will spend the most time on decks 5, 7 and 8. Deck 5 is home to the reception area, the main restaurant, the Explorer Bar & Lounge, the Expedition Lecture Room, the Voyager Library, the Ocean Boutique store and a very unique inside observation deck. What makes this observation deck unique is the wildlife platforms that fold down from the hull into dual viewing platforms on each side which offer spectacular views of the bow and surrounding ocean. Just a few meters above the sea below, the platforms make for one of the best places on board to spot wildlife and capture photographs.

Deck 7 is where guests will find the bridge as well as the four deluxe suites with the most square footage and largest balconies. Deck 7 is also home to the pool deck which features two hot tubs flanking an infinity pool with thick glass on either end, giving it a luxurious look and feel. However, don’t expect to be taking a dip in the pool at your leisure. The pool is filled only during days in port as while the ship is moving, water moves a bit too much for a safe swim and tends to splash up over the sides. For Alaska and Antarctica sailings, you may not get to swim in it at all. However, the hot tubs are open 8am to 8pm everyday and for warm weather repositioning sailing, the heat can be turned off to create two plunge pools with excellent views.

Surrounding the pool and hot tubs are lounge chairs and tiered seating coming down from the pool offering ample space for all. The Fiesta Bar is right there as well so guests don’t have to go far to enjoy the beverage of their choice when by the pool. Deck 7 is also where you’ll find a small spa where treatments and offerings vary by which cruise line is operating your particular voyage. If you aren’t tuckered out from a day exploring, a compact gym on deck 7 has treadmills, ellipticals, rowing machines and a few other features for guests to work off that extra piece of cake at dessert.

Deck 8, the topmost on board, is home to an observation lounge and outdoor deck. Not only is the lounge a full bar, but it’s also where the ship’s science comes to life via microscope banks on each side. Water samples collected from the ocean by the ship’s onboard naturalists are placed on slides and put under the microscopes to view everything from plankton to shrimp larvae and everything in between. The microscopes project to flat screen televisions in the lounge so even if you aren’t looking in the eyepiece yourself, you can still see what’s swimming around in the tiny drops of seawater.

Peering down from the aft of the ship, the fleet of zodiac boats are visible just waiting to get out and bring guests on excursions or to shore, as they also serve a tenders for ports without pier-access. Zodiacs are loaded from the mudroom on deck 3, where adventures ashore are staged. The large room full of lockers is an important feature for preparation before going ashore, particularly in a place like Antarctica where strict environmental regulations require equipment to be free of contaminants prior to use. Guests have their own locker to help get dressed in whatever adventure gear they’re using that day and openings on each side for loading guests into the zodiacs make the process quicker.

Staterooms

There are 93 staterooms available on board Ocean Victory with a max capacity of 186 guests. There are eight categories of stateroom ranging from the deck 3 standard staterooms with porthole window to the suites with large balconies on deck 7. Staterooms are only found on decks 3, 4, 6 and 7 with, the smallest being 157 square feet and the suites at a very spacious 445 square feet. Most staterooms feature a private veranda, though deck 7 did have french veranda rooms in addition to the four deluxe suites.

Storage space was ample, particularly for suite guests who will enjoy a walk-in closet and more than enough drawer space for all sorts of clothing and other items. A blue and cream motif found throughout the ship carries over to the stateroom giving it a clean and modern look and feel. Bathrooms feature a shower, sink and toilet, but you won’t find any bathtubs on board, even in the suites. Bath amenities were provided in dispensers attached to the wall as well as in individual packaging.

Each stateroom had at least one flatscreen TV, safe, bathrobes, and beds that convert from two singles to a queen. There are also options with some staterooms to open the balcony divider for those traveling with a group.

Regardless of where your cabin is located, you’re never far from anything and it’s fairly easy to find your way around after just a day or two on board.

Entertainment

Entertainment on board Ocean Victory comes in a couple of different forms. You won’t find highly produced shows or acts, but there is plenty of enrichment to be found as well as some fun in the evenings.

A highlight of sailing on Ocean Victory is the daily lectures on a wide variety of topics hosted in the Expedition Lecture Room on deck 5. These lectures ranged from tips to using your cell phone camera to in-depth discussions of wildlife, the ocean and in the case of the sailing we attended, history lessons on the Mayan culture of the Mexican regions we visited. Lectures were hosted by the naturalists and guides on board and offer valuable context about the region surrounding the ship. Lectures change based on the sailing, though some, like the phone camera tips seminar, remain consistent across most itineraries. No more than an hour long, the lectures were informative and well-attended by guests looking for a sense of enrichment in their cruise vacation.

In the evenings, a guitarist would set up in the Explorer Bar & Lounge and play from dinner’s end to 10pm. A songbook packet with lyrics was available so guests could follow along, a bit like karaoke. The songs were mostly well-known classic rock tunes but Katherine the guitarist/singer would take requests if asked. A grand piano also sits in the lounge and guests were encouraged to sit down and play if they felt so inclined. If happening night-life is part of your cruise agenda, Ocean Victory may not be the ship for you. However, the evening performance was usually well-attended and fostered a sense of camaraderie and community among the guests.

Windstar Cruises’ New Partnership to protect Coral Reefs in French Polynesia

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 18, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

The popular small-ship cruise line Windstar Cruises, has announced a new partnership with Coral Gardeners, a Mo’orea (French Polynesia)-based organization set on revolutionizing ocean conservation and creating a global movement to save the coral reefs by way of reef restoration, awareness initiatives, and new innovative solutions. The team’s goal is to grow, plant, and monitor thousands of heat-resilient corals with the intention of bringing life back to the ocean’s reef.

This month, Windstar made a $35,000 donation to Coral Gardeners to begin their three-year partnership. The money is going to be used to adopt coral for all passengers sailing with Windstar in French Polynesia for the remainder of the year.

Windstar’s 35 Years of Tahiti Cruises

The longest any cruise line has been in the region, 2022 marks Windstar’s 35th anniversary of sailing in Tahiti/French Polynesia. It is also the only destination where Windstar Cruises sails year-round, allowing travelers the flexibility to plan trips in any season. Windstar will have two ships sailing through French Polynesia throughout October. The company has been celebrating its 35th season all throughout October with special events featuring local dignitaries & artists and infusions of local culture on board and ashore.

“This new partnership is a wonderful way for us to celebrate Tahiti during our 35th anniversary season, but more importantly to make a positive impact for the future of these incredible islands,” said Windstar President Christopher Prelog.  “We’ve been focused on reducing our carbon footprint via updating our fleet’s engines and operations, and this next step in climate action at sea is to partner with Coral Gardeners to protect the environment in French Polynesia and beyond.”

RELATED: STRETCHING THE STAR PRIDE BY WINDSTAR

For the rest of the 2022 season, guests aboard Windstar Cruises will receive a small card in their rooms with information about their coral adoption. In 2023 and 2024, guests traveling with Windstar in French Polynesia will have the option to adopt a coral for a one-time donation of $35 per person. Guests choosing to adopt coral will receive adoption cards with specific details about their adoption and the impact the donation makes. Windstar President, Christopher Prelog, is confident that guests will choose to adopt a coral and do their part to save the reef they will enjoy while cruising in Tahiti.

Azamara Set to Return to Venice, Italy in 2023

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 18, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Luxury cruise line Azamara has announced the cruise line’s grand return to Venice, beginning on April 3, 2023. The return is a part of Azamara Journey’s 12-Night The Best of The Med Voyage, a cruise highlighting the history, culture, and beauty of the Mediterranean, sailing from Spain to Italy.

Beginning in the Spring of 2023, the line’s four-ship fleet will utilize the Venetian Lagoon ports of Chioggia and Fusina, providing guests with easy access to the beautiful city of Venice, where they can check out the gondolas and walk along the cobblestone streets.

“Thanks to our longstanding relationship with the local officials and port authorities of Venice, we’re thrilled to not only bring our guests back to this historic canal city but also to allow them to discover the wonders of neighboring towns such as Chioggia, which only smaller ships can visit,” said Mike Pawlus, Azamara’s Director of Strategic Itinerary & Destination Planning. “We look forward to once again immersing our guests in the rich local culture and amazing historical sites that the destination has to offer.”

Gaining easily accessible access to the heart of Venice is just the start of Azamara’s recent accomplishments in all things travel. Azamara also continues to seek out hidden gems for guests to experience while in Chioggia. Chioggia has recently experienced a significant rise in tourism, with a bit of help from “bacari”- bars serving wine and finger food along the central canal, Riva Vena. Tourists can stroll through the city and take in the historic churches and buildings, the beautiful sandy beaches, and discover hidden gems.

A few highlights of the upcoming Venice sailings include:

7-Night Italy Intensive Voyage

A seven-night country-intensive itinerary encourages guests to explore all that Italy has to offer, including late nights in Ravenna, Kotor, and Amalfi, and an overnight stay in Rome. Guests will have plenty of time to take in all the views and culture each city has to offer with a carefully scheduled itinerary. The journey begins in Venice, home to authentic local cuisine, Veneto wine, and stunning overarching bridges.

7-Night Amalfi & Dalmatian Coasts Voyage

This seven-night voyage gives guests plenty of time to explore the shorelines of the Amalfi and Dalmatian Coasts, with four late stays in popular destinations including Sorrento, Kotor, Dubrovnik, and Sibenik, as well as an overnight stay in Venice. In Venice, guests can enjoy a walk through the Piazza San Marco, Veneto wine tastings, and everything else that Venice has to offer.

Azamara also offers a lengthy list of shore excursions to allow guests to dive even deeper into Venice’s history, culture, and local cuisine.

Some excursions offered include:

A motorboat cruise excursion to the neighboring islands of Murano and Burano, where passengers will enjoy a tour of a famous glass-blowing factory and a demonstration of traditional lace-making techniques.

RELATED: GOING FORWARD WITH AZAMARA ONWARD

A guided walking tour led by a local expert includes visits to the church of Saint Rocco and one of the oldest squares in Venice, Campo San Polo.

An evening gondola ride excursion featuring a local singer and an accordionist, creating a classic and romantic once-in-a-lifetime Venice experience.

Royal Caribbean Group Opens First Zero-Energy Cruise Terminal

by Julie Bouchner October 14, 2022
written by Julie Bouchner

Royal Caribbean has become the first zero-energy cruise terminal to generate 100% of its needed energy through on-site solar panels. The new Galveston terminal will be used by the company’s internal brand and sit as the world’s first LEED Zero Energy facility.

“We are focused on innovating across all aspects of our company, especially in our work to advance sustainability in the communities we visit,” said Jason Liberty, president, and CEO, of Royal Caribbean Group. “We deeply value both the oceans we sail and the communities we visit and operate in, and the modern design and development features at our terminal in Galveston will work in service of both.”

Opening on Nov 9, 2022, the new cruise terminal will be the first in Texas to receive LEED Gold certification. This certification showcases the healthy, highly efficient, and cost-saving efforts the company has made to reduce its carbon footprint and environmental quality. The company is expected to receive the certification at the beginning of 2023.

The Galveston Cruise Terminal is 161,334 square feet expanding the company’s presence and ability to accommodate up to 630,000 guests annually.

Royal Caribbean Group has four LEED-certified facilities, including Terminal A at Port Miami, the Springfield, Oregon campus, and the Innovation Lab at Royal Caribbean in Miami.

New Terminal Approach

The design for the terminal comes from an environmental strategy, focusing on the development of sustainable infrastructure and decarbonization strategy.

Improved Sustainability in Construction: Using less carbon materials will lower the energy used and the transportation process. During the construction process, the team has taken 75% of its waste from landfill.

Renewable Energy and Carbon Reduction: The Galveston Terminal will rely on 30,000 square feet of on-site solar panels, allowing the port to use self-sufficient energy. All remaining energy will be sent back to the local power grid.

Regional and Global Environmental Benefits: Use strategies to reduce exterior lighting pollution to help minimize negative effects on the surrounding community. Implement materials that will reduce the “heat island effect.”

Community Connectivity: Offer bicycle and electric charging stations promoting exercise and an alternative means of transportation for guests and staff.

More about Royal Caribbean Group:

• Royal Caribbean has a fleet of 64 ships

• The company travels to about 1,000 destinations around the world.

• The brand is the owner of three-award winning brands: Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, and Silversea Cruises.

Our new Galveston terminal, opening Nov. 9, will be the first cruise terminal in Texas to generate 100% of the energy it needs to operate through on-site solar panels, with zero reliance on the local electrical grid. MSC World Europa Reveals New Partnerships To Enrich Food and Beverage Experience

written by Julie Bouchner

MSC Cruises revealed two new partnerships to elevate the food and beverage experience aboard the upcoming MSC World Europa.

Michelin-starred chef, TV personality, and author Niklas Ekestedt is collaborating with MSC Cruises to create a menu for the new specialty restaurant, Chef’s Garden Kitchen focusing on bringing natural ingredients to your table. Chef’s Garden Kitchen will feature the first hydroponic garden at sea.

“Working with MSC Cruises to develop a new dining concept on MSC World Europa has been an exciting experience and we have created something really special and unique,” said Chelf Ekstedt. “The menu is rooted in my core philosophy that everything needs to start with the very best natural ingredients and, as such, the dishes are simple but full of flavor and will feature the hydroponic micro-greens that are grown in on board in the restaurant to enhance the flavors, texture and colors.”

Teo Musso, the award-winner brewmaster who created Baladin Farm Brewery, joins MSC Cruises to create a range of signature craft beers that will be brewed at sea in the ship’s micro-brewery. Musso will produce and serve a range of oceanic beers made exclusively on board MSC World Europa using desalinated seawater. Guests who enjoy a nice cold beer can get excited to try a pilsner alongside the pool on the ship.

“I have always loved to experiment and be creative with my beers. This partnership with MSC Cruises was a gift, a chance to create not only three new beers but to do so in the most romantic of ways: at sea,” said Teo Musso. “The result is three totally new ‘Oceanic’ brews—a pils, a bitter and a wheat—each with its own unique array of flavors. A chance for MSC Cruises’ guests to discover new tastes, just as they discover new destinations.”

MSC World Europa will set sail in December 2022. Beginning in the Arabian Gulf region, she will sail on a 7-night itinerary from Dubai to locations like Abu Dhabi, Sir Bani Yas Island, Dammam in South Arabia, and Doha, Qatar.

Chef’s Garden Kitchen Features

Are your taste buds ready to dine with fresh and seasonal flavors? Chef’s Garden Kitchen is all about bringing natural flavors to your table. Meals on this menu can range from scallop ceviche to pickled kohlrabi or even Langoustine tails. Top off your meal with meringue or white chocolate and verbena dessert.

Craft Beer At Sea

MSC Cruises has always provided beer aboard to be enjoyed at a meal or by the pool. For the first time on board, guests can look forward to an onboard brewery. Brewing beer at sea will allow guests to taste oceanic beers made exclusively aboard the MSC World Europa.

MSC World Europa Dining Features

Guests traveling on MSC World Europa can expect a complete list of venues and seven brand-new bar lounge locations.

  • Coffee Emporium: A modern coffee house that will fit any coffee lover’s dream.
  • Raj Polo Tea House: Go back in time to experience the tea traditions of India in this relaxing tropical tea house.
  • The Gin Project: Gin lovers get excited to try over 70 crafts of gin at the Gin Project. Try classic cocktails prepared by gintenders.
  • Elixir-Mixology Bar: Stop by this bar for a fun experience for cocktails and handcrafting concoctions.
  • Fizz-Champagne Bar: Enjoy champagne in this lounge. Stop by to pop some bubbles.

FELICITY ASTON, THE FIRST WOMAN TO CROSS ANTARCTICA SOLO, NAMED GODMOTHER OF SILVER ENDEAVOUR

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 12, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

Silversea Cruises has named Felicity Aston MBE the Godmother of their newest and most luxurious vessel, Silver Endeavour!

An honored polar explorer, television presenter, author, and climate scientist, Felicity Aston is the first woman to ski solo across Antarctica in 2012. Aston is also the first person to travel across the continent with just her muscle power. She has been awarded the Polar Medal and has been appointed MBE for services to exploration. A historical well-kept tradition, a ship’s Godmother bestows a blessing on the ship for safe travels during the official naming ceremony. Aston will take part in Silver Endeavour’s intimate naming ceremony, taking place in Antarctica a few days before the vessel’s inaugural voyage on November 21, 2022.

“I am honoured to have been selected as the Godmother of Silver Endeavour – a beautiful ship that will introduce countless travelers to the magnificent allure of the Polar Regions,” says Felicity Aston. “With each of my expeditions, I am driven to push boundaries, to explore new frontiers, and to experience the planet’s most spectacular places. Guests traveling aboard Silversea’s newest ship will exercise these same ambitions with the charting of each course, the launching of every Zodiac, and the arrival in each destination. She is a vehicle for discovery in every sense of the term and I am excited to sail to the Polar Regions in such comfort.”

20 YEARS EXPLORING ANTARCTICA

Over the past 20 years, Aston has challenged herself to take on some of the most dangerous expeditions in the world’s most drastic environments. She has been the leader of several revolutionary expeditions, including the first British women’s team to cross the Greenland ice sheet. Aston has broken records with her all-woman teams on ski expeditions in both the North and South Poles. Her longest expedition took place in Antarctica, where she spent 39 months at the Rather Research Station in 2000. During her time there, Aston was tracking climate change and the ozone layer as a meteorologist for the British Antarctic Survey. She is now located at the National Oceanography Centre and the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom investigating airborne microplastic pollution on polar sea ice and reimagining scientific understanding altogether. Aston will continue her leadership of the B.I.G (Before It’s Gone) North Pole expedition, a project focused on collecting material for some crucial Arctic Ocean sea ice research in 2023. She has published 5 books about her adventures and extreme expeditions, co-presented 2 BBC documentaries, and has been published by Vanity Fair, Marie Claire, and National Geographic. Aston is also an elected member of the Society of Women Geographers, as well as a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in London and The Explorers Club in New York.

“We are delighted to welcome Felicity Aston to the Silversea family as Godmother of Silver Endeavour,” said Roberto Martinoli, President and CEO, Silversea Cruises. “A leading authority in the field of polar exploration, Felicity is the perfect ambassador for our cruise line. She shares the unwavering senses of curiosity and adventure that unite all Silversea guests. In becoming the first woman to cross Antarctica alone, as well as the first person to traverse the continent purely by muscle power, Felicity demonstrated exceptional commitment, resilience, and passion, embodying a true spirit of discovery. Her explorations are more than a test of physical stamina; they are a test of oneself. They will be a source of great inspiration for travellers as they set forth on their journey to Polar Regions and beyond with Silversea.”

About Silver Endeavour

Silversea’s Silver Endeavour was designed for polar exploration and constructed to fit PC6 polar class specifications. The vessel carries ultramodern amenities, featuring kayaks, advanced navigation & exploration technology, and a remote gimbal camera system, which can capture high-quality images from 5km away. Silver Endeavour also features Silversea’s stamp of comfortability and has a crew-to-guest ratio of approximately 1:1. Interest Spikes in Holland America Line’s Alaska 2023 Cruises as the Company’s 75th Anniversary Concludes

by Porthole Cruise and Travel October 12, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

After a busy season of over 100 cruises across 6 vessels, Holland America Line has set sail from Alaska for the last time this year as the Eurodam & Koningsdam completed their final port visits at Ketchikan last Thursday.

RELATED: HOLLAND AMERICA LINE CALLS LIFTED CANADA PROTOCOLS A “WIN”

“As this successful season winds down, we’re pleased to see growing interest in Alaska 2023,” said Gus Antorcha, president, of Holland America Line. “Alaska is a bucket-list destination and people are excited to travel more. We’re seeing bookings well above levels from similar periods in the seasons prior to the industry pause.”

Over this last 2022 Alaska Season, Holland America Line celebrated their landmark 75th Anniversary while exploring the Great Land. The cruise line celebrated with new “Alaska Up Close” shipboard programming, a “We Love Alaska” marketing campaign, a “Love Letters to Alaska” contest, and two brand new partnerships highlighting the company’s commitment to serving sustainable and local Alaskan seafood.

“Holland America Line’s 75th Anniversary in Alaska got off to an incredible start with Koningsdam as the first ship back in Canada in more than two years, and we kept building momentum with new immersive programming, partnerships that focused sustainability and more,” added Antorcha. “No other cruise line can deliver Alaska like Holland America Line, and this season we focused all of our expertise and passion on giving guests a memorable Alaska experience that touched all elements of their vacation, from enrichment to culinary to shoreside tours.”

Koningsdam is the First Ship to Resume Sailing in Canada

On April 8, 2022, Koningsdam was the first cruise ship to return to Canada in over two years with calls at Victoria, Canada, and British Columbia. The ship’s call signified a whopping 905 days since a cruise ship visited the port. The following day, Koningsdam arrived in Vancouver to kick off the start of its Alaska season.

“Alaska Up Close” Engages Guests in Local Customs

Holland America Line has initiated its “Alaska Up Close” program that immerses guests on Alaska cruises in the culture of the locals through authentic onboard programming, detailed cruise activities, and alluring shore excursions. EXC Talks, Holland America Line’s exclusive destination programming designed to engage guests with the culture of their destinations, provides guests will workshops and lectures from those who know Alaska best. The program will explore the stories of locals, and show guests the hidden gems of the area, including historic traditions and cuisine.

Partnership with Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute

Holland America Line has partnered with Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) to highlight the company’s commitment to serving sustainable local seafood. This is the first formal partnership between ASMI and a prominent cruise line. Holland America Line promises guests seafood exclusively sourced from Alaska on all six ships cruising through the Great Land. To celebrate the partnership, Holland America Line has introduced three brand new seafood dishes designed by Culinary Council Member, Ethan Stowell. In addition to the many Alaskan seafood dishes already on the menu, the new dishes feature an Alaskan salmon chop, a fried Alaska cod sandwich, and roasted fennel-crusted Alaskan halibut. On any Alaska cruise, the line typically serves more than 2,000 pounds of Alaska Salmon, 1,000 pounds of Alaska cod, 800 pounds of Alaska halibut, and 500 pounds of Alaska rockfish.

Authenticated by Responsible Fisheries Management

Holland America Line has also become the first-ever cruise line to be awarded a certification from Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM). RFM certified all six of the cruise line’s ships that sail to Alaska after an independent audit, confirming that the vessels serve only fresh, sustainable, and visibly traceable Alaskan seafood. Aligned with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, RFM is a third-party certification program for wild-capture fisheries.

“Love Letters to Alaska” Contest Receives Praise

This past Valentine’s Day, the company launched a “Love Letters to Alaska” contest to celebrate its 75th Anniversary. Over 40,000 people sent in letters detailing reasons why they love Alaska and why they’d like to visit. A panel of judges with ties to Alaska named Deborah Thelwell of Phoenix, Arizona, the grand prize winner of a 7-day Holland America Line Alaskan Cruise for 2.

“We Love Alaska” Campaign

After 75 years of exploring Alaska, Holland America Line longed to show the Alaskan locals its loyalty to the region by having its six Alaskan vessels display new “We Love Alaska” logos below the Bridge. The company motivated guests to snap photos of the brand-new logos to post to social media, signifying their excitement while cruising through the Great Land.

Holland America Line’s 2023 Alaska Season runs from April through September. Guests can choose from over 100 offered cruises and get the chance to see Alaska through the eyes of the locals. In addition to the already popular 7-day itineraries, the company is revving its beloved 14-day “Great Alaska Explorer” cruise. For cruisers looking to travel deep into Alaska, the company is offering 16 different Cruise-tours, spanning from 3, 4, and 7-day trips. Holland America Line is the only cruise line that gives its guests the opportunity to tour the preserved land of Canada’s Yukon Territory.
