Port of Tarragona Set to Be Spain’s Newest Cruise Destination

by Porthole Cruise and Travel July 5, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

With lots of real estate along the gorgeous Mediterranean Sea, Spain is a destination cruisers return to again and again. While cities like Barcelona and Valencia are the top draws, another port is eyeing a chance to be one of Spain’s most popular cruise ports.

Tarragona is just South of Barcelona, only about an hour by car, and a new cruise development is in the works that will bring a state-of-the-art pier and cruise terminal to Tarragona port.

Global Ports Holding, the world’s largest independent cruise port operator, is the company developing the project with a 12+ year deal in place to to manage the services for cruise passengers in Tarragona, Spain. Along with a new pier and terminal, the port will have shore power capabilities, car and coach parking and retail stores.

Holland America Adds 2nd Transatlantic to 150th Celebrations

by Porthole Cruise and Travel June 29, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

To commemorate their 150th anniversary, Holland America Line is adding a second transatlantic crossing for guests to enjoy on board their new ship Rotterdam. Departing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on April 3, 2023, the 16-night itinerary sails to Rotterdam, the Netherlands, retracing in reverse the company’s first ever sailing.

Prior to crossing the Atlantic Ocean, the ship heads North to New York City for an overnight call. Guests have the opportunity to see all of the sights in the Big Apple like the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Empire State Building, Broadway and more. Rotterdam will then spend eight days at sea crossing the Atlantic, calling on Plymouth and Dover, England, before arriving on the 150th anniversary date — April 18 — in Rotterdam for an overnight with lots of events to commemorate the occasion.

“As we got deeper into planning the events surrounding our 150th, we knew that the best place to celebrate the date of our founding was in the city of Rotterdam where it all started,” said Gus Antorcha, president of Holland America Line. “These voyages that mark our first departure and our anniversary are going to be incredibly memorable as we retrace our first sailing from the 1870s, but on a modern, luxury cruise ship. We anticipate the April cruise to be as popular as the October sailing.”

Holland America Line previously announced the first special 150th anniversary crossing that will depart Rotterdam Oct. 15, 2022, exactly 150 years to the date of the departure of Rotterdam I’s maiden voyage. The crossing will recreate that first sailing, going from Rotterdam to New York, with calls at Plymouth and Dover, then on to Fort Lauderdale. The ship will stay overnight in New York for special celebrations.

Because of the new April 3 departure, three sailings had to be cancelled, but all guests and their travel advisors were notified. Bookings for the new eastbound transatlantic crossing will open to the public July 14, 2022.

by Porthole Cruise and Travel June 28, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

We’re just six months away from the inaugural cruise on board MSC Cruises’ MSC World Europa and today the cruise line announced their entertainment plans for the youngest guests on board. Not only will the ship feature the largest kids’ area ever for the cruise line at 8,245 square feet across seven distinct spaces sorted by age, but also more than 100 hours of live entertainment specifically for kids on every cruise.

According to MSC Cruises’ Kids’ Entertainment Manager Matteo Mancini, providing a place for young guests to fully enjoy their cruise vacation was a major focus for the cruise line.

“We have invested heavily in the entertainment offerings for our younger guests, and we know they value the latest technology, trends and experiences. We have worked to introduce real innovations in both the design of the facilities as well as the development of an incredible program of activities, all carefully planned to ensure that the differing needs of all age groups are met – from our youngest guests to teenagers. More than 350,000 young people have travelled with us over the years, and we have listened to their feedback. MSC World Europa reflects these learnings and we have been inspired to create experiences that blend technology and social media with activity and sport to create fresh and new entertainment for the kids who sail with us.”

The Kids’ Clubs on board MSC World Europa are organized by age group:
  • For infants and toddlers: Baby Club (0 – 2 years), cared for by specially trained crew members
  • For younger kids: Mini Club and Juniors Club (3 – 11 years)
  • For older kids: Young Club and Teen Club (12 – 17 years), including the new TEENS LAB, an immersive, tech-filled, space just for teens

An Up-Close Look at Virgin Voyages’ Valiant Lady

by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine June 28, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine

If anyone in the cruise industry was going to get Jennifer Lopez on the payroll, it surely fell to Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group. That’s right: J. Lo — international film and music superstar and global style icon — has landed a job at Virgin Voyages.

The fleet-wide partnership between Lopez, Branson, and his cruise line Virgin Voyages was revealed in a tongue-in-cheek video ahead of the launch of Valiant Lady, the brand’s newest vessel, at the London port of Tilbury on March 11. It captured a luminous Jennifer (it’s the J. Lo glow up) chatting to Branson on FaceTime. “J. Lo called. We Answered,” was Virgin’s top line.

“We searched for someone very special to join us on this voyage,” said Tom McAlpin, CEO of Virgin Voyages. “Jennifer is a trailblazer and embodies the spirit of Virgin Voyages and its people.”

Year of the Virgin

This year, two new ships, plus homeports in Miami, Barcelona, and Athens, will extend the line’s presence. In May, the 2,700-passenger Valiant Lady heads to her summer homeport in Barcelona for a season of sun-soaked Mediterranean sailings. In August, Resilient Lady, the third “Lady ship” in Virgin’s fleet of four, will begin sailing from Athens.

In what feels like a lifetime ago, in February 2019, Virgin Voyages experienced one of the toughest cruising debuts a line has seen. A brief sailing window last summer garnered plaudits and saw the brand gain a foothold in extremely challenging times. After a few months in the water, Virgin’s first ship, Scarlet Lady, was named “Best New Cruise Ship for 2021” by Cruise Critic and garnered accolades for the best suites at sea. A 70 percent uptick in bookings since December bodes well for the line’s first full Mediterranean season.

President of Virgin Voyages Nirmal Saverimuttu says 2022 is all about itineraries and wooing the new-to-cruise. “This is what clients were asking for: new destinations and more exciting itineraries.”

While Scarlet sails 4- and 5-night itineraries, Valiant Lady will offer 7-night voyages with late-night departures and overnight stays in Ibiza and Palma de Mallorca or Mykonos in Greece.

In addition to late-night and overnight stops, “sailors” can expect culturally-led excursions including flamenco dancing in Málaga and chocolate pairing and wine tastings in Marseille.

New Kind of Cruise

Branson has built an empire on upending tradition and that maverick spirit is written into Virgin Voyages’ DNA. You can get inked at sea. The modular bed can be re-jigged. There’s drag queen karaoke and ‘peek-a-boo’ showers, glamorous Rockstar suites and four electric guitars in the Massive Suite. The day at sea is heaven sent for those with abs to tone and social channels to feed, city-break types, those who tend portfolio careers in cafes over Prana Chai tea or anyone with a penchant for vadouvan tahini at 2 a.m.

Like her predecessor, Valiant Lady channels a playful, cheeky and relaxed, adult-only vibe. Millennials will feel at home. Menus are QR-able, the cabin’s brain is a tablet, take-out cup lids are recyclable, and the Virgin Voyages app is your “wallet” and guide to ship, shore, and more. Infinitely photogenic, the true Instagram star is Valiant Lady herself (although J. Lovers may disagree).

With several indoor and outdoor fitness spaces, a “shake for Champagne” app (geo-tag tech brings the bubbles to you) and food delivered anytime, anywhere, Valiant Lady caters as much to the “breakfast-at-2pm” crowd as she does to the “do-everything” type. New for Valiant Lady is the beautifully choreographed Ships in the Night (shown at The Red Room theatre) and the music-video-meets-club-scene UNTITLED DANCESHOW PARTYTHING, produced by Tony Award nominated director Sam Pinkleton and Ani Taj (at The Manor nightclub).

Minor tweaks aside, Valiant is a blueprint of Scarlet. Public-space artwork reflects the European destinations in which Valiant sails, and British artist Hillary Wilson has emblazoned the bow with a black mermaid. Called Valiance, she flies a billowing, liveried red flag.

“Why change something that works so well?” said Saverimuttu. “The response to the product was overwhelming and Scarlet met with astonishing reviews. People like the relaxed vibe, the made-to-order cuisine and the ‘rock star’ service. We’ve had first-time cruisers telling us they’ll never go back to land-based holidays.”

Virgin Voyages Experiences

Menus are creative and food is as healthy as you make it. At The Social Club I grazed on spicy shrimp and tacos with beetroot hummus served from dim-sum style trolleys. At Floats and Shakes I ordered a Berry Me At Sea (bubbles, berry sorbet, vanilla and Red Bull; $9). I snacked at Bento Bay Japanese and dined at the experimental Test Kitchen and the vegetarian-forward Razzle Dazzle which, for my money, offers the best breakfast menu at sea. Bar a technical hiccup at Test Kitchen (a lost Wi-Fi signal meant a stack of orders didn’t reach the kitchen) service was excellent.

Those craving a “scene” will find it in Richard’s Rooftop Lounge — exclusive for those in Rockstar Quarters — around the pre-bookable on-deck cabanas; in the Champagne bar, Sip; and, in the wee hours, at The Manor. At our overnight showcase, Diplo was guest DJ and my head was turned by a man dressed as a cat and another who owned the dance floor in metallic-silver briefs and a glittery fishnet cape. “That wasn’t part of the entertainment,” said one of the crew at breakfast. “He just rocked up.”

Generation Y might be tempted. Hard-done-by 45-plusses can make up for lost time. I went to the Grounds coffee bar for an espresso ($3) and came away with a Black Cat Fizz — espresso, tonic and orange poured over ice ($6). I went to yoga (free) and slurped tonkotsu ramen at 11 a.m. I purred over limited-edition vinyl at the Record Store and played Korean drinking games with an influencer at Gunbae. I squeezed in a deep-tissue massage at the Redemption Spa ($189 for 50 minutes) and had my “crunchy knots” kneaded by Kimmie, whose petite frame masked the hands of Hercules.

A Virgin cruise is a bit like going on holiday with the most liberal parents imaginable. It’s hard to rebel when the rules are already broken.

And what of those “people” CEO Tom McAlpin references above? I’ve come across ships where the majority of guest-facing crew are warm and friendly but I’ve yet to find a team as diverse (a cabin host from Montenegro, a barista from Brazil, a mixologist from Bali and a spa therapist from South Africa…), as confident, or as “in their skin” as the individuals on Scarlet or Valiant Lady. On Virgin Voyages personality counts.

More Than a Godmother

By partnering with Lopez, Branson is — yet again — turning the traditional ceremonial godmother role on its head.

The Branson J. Lo FaceTime conversation is centered on finding a title more befitting of a 21st-century, multitasking, A1 celebrity.

“Jenny from the dock?” quips Branson. “Mermaid in Manhattan?”

Hours before Valiant Lady’s London showcase, Lopez’s full job title was finally given as Investor and Chief Entertainment & Lifestyle Officer. “My artistic and social mission is to empower, inspire and entertain,” says Lopez. “Any opportunity I get to combine these attributes into a partnership and collaboration is exciting.”

With a pivotal year ahead, investor and fleet guardian Lopez has quite the remit. There are sailor experiences to develop, entertainment and well-being schedules to plan, and products to sell. Kicking things off in style, Virgin Voyages will be introducing J. Lo Beauty as part of the onboard offering.

With that J. Lo glow, all sailors, even the 45-plus ones, will be camera ready. ***

Barge Cruising In Southern France

by Steve Leland June 27, 2022
written by Steve Leland

I’m up to jumping on any cruise, anywhere and anytime. I’ve experienced every imaginable type of cruise, unheard of destinations and every type of vessel from mega ships, yachts, sailing vessels, Indonesian phinisis to polar expedition ships, each with its own identity and appeal. When it comes to barging and charting a course through the canals and waterways of France it’s a different world, one that requires the assistance of an agent specializing in this niche style of cruising. Like our previous eight barge cruises, we relied on the expertise of The Barge Lady, aka Barge Lady Cruises to find us rare last minute availability on two barges based in southern France.

Life In The Slow Lane

Barging is a slow paced adventure of personalized navigation on back country canals, visiting landlocked hamlets, medieval villages and cities inaccessible to ocean going vessels and sharing the unique experience with fewer than 12 other persons.

Rather than vast open seas, you’ll glide through narrow canals and rivers that wind their way through hillside vineyards, farm lands and forested pathways. Consider these cruises as off the radar nautical sailings minus multi deck atriums, nightly entertainment and poolside activities. It’s a laid back, never rushed journey of unplugged exploration curated by a personal guide, the welcoming hospitality of an accommodating crew and creative cuisine prepared by the talents of a gourmet chef.

I’ve experienced this unique cruising style on the canals of Burgundy, Provence, Ireland and Scotland and every one has proven to be something extra special. Like the small hotels that dot the French countryside, these floating holiday accommodations are star rated but regardless of the vessel’s rating, each one boasts an endemic set of standards. Cruising France’s Canal du Midi on the 3 star 10 passenger Athos followed by sailing the rivers of Provence on the 12 passenger, 5+ star Belmond Napoléon rekindled the passion for this type of relaxing retreat.

The Ups and Downs Of The Canal

These man made aquatic pathways were originally designed in the 1600’s with horse drawn barges providing a means of transporting goods to landlocked destinations prior to motorized navigation. With the advent of the railroad facilitating faster and more efficient transport, the canal system fell into a sedentary period. Then in the mid 1960’s inspired by the idea of enhanced recreational use, the concept of barge hotel cruising began, giving new life to these historic waterways.

Canal navigation is full of engaging sights but none more intriguing than passing through the canal’s ingenious lock system. While envious onlookers watch from the shore, guests onboard enjoy front row seats to the spectacle of the lowering and raising of the barge through a series of lock chambers. In the case of the Athos, it not only passes through several individual locks, it is also raised or lowered in nine consecutive locks after departing Pezenas and shortly thereafter crosses over a river by means of an elevated aqueduct.

What A Difference Every Day Makes

Breakfast onboard is generally followed by inclusive daily excursions exploring well known destinations as well as secret gems known only to locals. Guests aboard the Athos visit the medieval fortified city of Carcassonne followed by lunch served under the upper deck canopy. The barge lazily floats its way to a late afternoon secluded mooring spot before a pre- dinner wine tasting experience at a family operated vineyard. Each ensuing day reveals another destination full of local history, color and charm, visiting the open markets of Narbonne, the village of Minerve, the cathedral of Capestang and the ancient alleyways of Pezenas, interspersed with surprise attractions along the way.

Connoisseurs of wine and Michelin style cuisine preparation will find the esteemed reputation of the Belmond brand carried out flawlessly aboard the Napoléon. The vessel evokes an aura of class and sophistication in its furnishings, a spacious salon and elegant dining room, while outdoors you can bask in the sun of southern France on the open upper deck, enjoy personal solace under the canopy or soak up the ambiance of cruising the Rhône River in a hot tub. It’s positioning on the Rhône provides luxury access to the beauty of Provence and Burgundy.

RELATED: ENGLAND, BY BARGE LADY CRUISES

With a champagne toast and introduction of the vessel’s endearing staff the adventure sets sail from the walled city of Avignon. With exceptional dinners, a peaceful night’s rest and breakfast under our belts, the Napoléon’s personal guide curates a series of daily excursions starting with a tour of Arles. It’s Roman amphitheater and massive colosseum style arena dwarf the colorful alleyways that wind their way through the stomping grounds of Van Gogh and Gauguin. A follow up day in Avignon provides a glimpse into the towering Pope’s Palace and the famed Pont du Gard. Visit Chateauneuf-de-Pape, pass through the second deepest lock in Europe, savor the taste of truffles in Grignan, the aroma of lavender growing in the fields and sample the vintage wines of Mr. Ferraton in Tain l’Hermitage.

The attributes of epicurean excellence and pampered service are proudly on display in this shining star of Belmond’s 6 vessel fleet. The Napoléon is periodically available for individual reservations while others operate exclusively on a charter basis.

The Art Of The Meal

Regardless of itinerary or vessel, daily excursions contribute to the intrinsic appeal of barging but it’s the dining experience that is the piece de resistance that sets barging apart from mainstream cruising. Crystal glassware and fine china set the table for a personalized candlelit ambiance, an environment impossible to duplicate on larger vessels.

Multi-course gastronomic presentations are paired with top shelf wines of the region and main courses supplemented by a selection of premier artisanal French cheeses. Delectable desserts cap off the culinary extravaganza but an after dinner drink under mother nature’s surrogate chandelier of twinkling stars is an indelible encore of these amazing holidays afloat.

Stretching the Star Pride by Windstar

by Julie Bouchner June 24, 2022
written by Julie Bouchner

Star Pride by Windstar Cruises sets sail at full capacity after the ship’s stretch. Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine Founder and Editor-in-Chief Bill Panoff was onboard with the Chris Prelog, President of Windstar Cruises, to discuss the new and improved ship.

“The ships were always already game changers and really icons for small ship cruising. With Winston’s implementation on this stock class plus project we have had really enhanced all our public rooms,” Prelog said.

Star Pride was converted and stretched with new and existing parts. The area that had the most noticeable improvement is the open deck.

“We have a large open deck. A brand-new pool area. An infinity edge where you can access the pool from two decks…We have really converted a lot of our spaces whether it is the new part of the ship or the existing part of the ship,” Prelog said.

The variety and quality of food on Windstar Cruises continues to be a staple on Star Pride. With the stretch and update, the ship has new additions for restaurants. To name a few, Quatro 44, Star Grill, and Alfresco BBQ. Sit beside the deck with a nice gourmet meal paired with the staple steakhouse candles.

Besides the ship itself, the locations Windstar Cruises sails to are a big part of the overall experience. Tahiti is a big destination that the cruise line has traveled to for the last 35 years. In honor of this milestone, the company is redeploying the salaries to Tahiti and will be sailing with two of their ships to the area in October

Ponant AND Smithsonian Journeys Announce Cruises In ANTARCTICA WINTER 2023

by Julie Bouchner June 23, 2022
written by Julie Bouchner

Look out for Winter 2023! Ponant Cruises announced they are collaborating with Smithsonian Journeys on a series of co-branded sailings offering 21 cruises to Antarctica. Two experienced Smithsonian Journeys Experts will lead each trip with backgrounds in art history, a solar astrophysicist, or an international relations expert to further assist travelers in immersing in their destination.

Ponant’s Le Lyrial with experts Michelle Thaller, Assistant Director for Science Communication at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight, and Peter Bobrowsky, geologist and archeologist, will be on board for a 12-day polar cruise to the Antarctic Peninsula from February 20, 2023, to March 3, 2023, to view wildlife and landscapes all around Antarctica along with guests.

ANTARCTICA CRUISE Itinerary:

  • The trip begins with an overnight in Buenos Aires before a charter flight brings guests to Ushuaia, the capital of Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego province, considered the gateway to the White Continent.
  • From there, the ship will cross the mythical Drake Passage, an ice-cold 500-mile stretch between the tip of South America and the South Shetland Islands of Antarctica, where sightings of albatrosses and cape petrels will be accompanied by lectures about the continent’s history and wildlife.
  • For five days, guests will embark on zodiac outings and landings to explore Antarctica’s vastness—ice floes, tabletop icebergs, mountain peaks that plunge into the sea, volcanic beaches, and icy bays.
  • Travelers will also visit research stations and former whaling stations.
  • After guests have discovered every craggy crevasse of the Antarctic Peninsula, Le Lyrial will turn around and return to Ushuaia via the Drake Passage.

Cruising from Baltimore is Back and Better Than Ever

One of America’s most convenient port cities is back in action and that’s great news for cruisers! Baltimore, also known as the Charm City, is one of the most convenient cruise embarkation ports and major cruise lines are once again sailing from the city to some of the most sought-after cruise destinations.

If you’ve never cruised from Baltimore before, here’s why it just might become your favorite cruise port!

Cruising is Back in Baltimore

Port of Baltimore welcomed back their first cruise ship in late 2021 when Carnival Pride embarked from port in September on a seven-day cruise to The Bahamas with calls on Nassau, Freeport and Carnival’s private island Half Moon Cay.

At the time, Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy said “We’re thrilled to be back in Baltimore, providing our guests with the relaxing vacation they’ve been so patiently waiting for but also supporting the local economy and offering our crew members an opportunity to support their families back home. Baltimore has been a wonderful partner for more than a decade and we are delighted to get Back to Fun in this key market which serves hundreds of thousands of guests in the Northeast and along the Atlantic Coast.”Since then, the city has also welcomed back Enchantment of the Seas from Royal Caribbean and soon Norwegian Cruise Line will be sailing from Port of Baltimore as well. Since cruising restarted from the port, there’s been a steady increase in the number of cruise passengers, a sign that cruising from Baltimore is officially back!

Why Cruise from Baltimore?

Cruises to destinations like the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada/New England and the Caribbean are offered year-round from Port of Baltimore so cruisers have options when it comes to booking their next vacation from the city.

Since it’s a smaller port compared to others in the industry, cruisers rarely have to worry about long embarkation lines or hassle, instead they can hop on their ship quickly and easily and really get into vacation mode! The port caters to both veteran cruisers and newcomers to the industry with their helpful and friendly port agents offering assistance during embarkation and debarkation.

Baltimore has plenty to experience if you’ve never visited before. Many cruisers choose to arrive in the city a day or two prior to their cruise vacation to take in the sights. Some of the city’s highlights include starting in the Inner Harbor and taking a water taxi to places like Fells Point, Canton, Harbor East and Fort McHenry. Other highlights include the Walters Art Museum and Baltimore Museum of Art or checking out the USS Constellation, a naval warship built in 1854 found right in the Inner Harbor.

The surrounding area has a lot to offer as well. Maryland is home to a number of museums, art galleries, outdoor activities like hiking and biking, special events, festivals and more all throughout the year. The state is also home to some of the best crab restaurants in the country along with a number of breweries and wineries.

It’s Easy to Cruise from Port of Baltimore

While the cruise industry pause was in effect, the team at Port of Baltimore looked for new ways to make it even easier to sail from. Since many choose to drive to the port, the team at Port of Baltimore and Cruise Maryland developed a new online pre-paid parking system where cruise guests can use their credit card to pre-pay for their parking to save even more time at the terminal. Parking is also located onsite at the cruise terminal, which adds to the convenience.

What also makes Port of Baltimore one of the most convenient cruise departure ports is its close proximity to major cities like Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and New York. The port draws cruisers from nearby states like Delaware, Virginia, Washington DC, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey as many find it easier to drive to their embarkation port rather than fly.

Those who do fly in for their cruise vacation won’t have much to worry about either as BWI Thurgood Marshall airport is located just a 20 minute drive away from the cruise terminal, with two other additional international airports just an hour drive away as well. The train is another option for many as Baltimore’s Penn Station is also just a 20 minute drive to the cruise terminal.

“We are easy to get to by car, by air, and by train to start your vacation by cruise. We also pride ourselves on award winning customer service,’ said Cynthia Burman, General Manager Business Development & Customer Service at Maryland Port Administration.

If you’re looking for your next cruise vacation, try sailing from the Port of Baltimore and enjoying the city before or after your cruise! Not only does the port make things easy for cruisers, but the city has a lot to offer to people of all ages. Have you cruised from Port of Baltimore? Let us know in the comments!

Carnival Cruise Line Announces ‘Costa by Carnival’ Collaboration

by Julie Bouchner June 22, 2022
written by Julie Bouchner

Carnival Cruise Line announced today that the company is teaming up with Costa Cruises for a sister brand collaboration. Beginning Spring 2023, guests can set sail with COSTA by CARNIVAL, a collaboration between the two cruise brands where Carnival Cruise Line will operate two Costa Cruises’ ships from the United States. Costa Venezia will first sail from New York in 2023 followed by Costa Firenze in Spring 2024 from Long Beach, California.

“Costa Venezia and Costa Firenze will bring Carnival’s guests the ambiance and beauty of Italy,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “We’re going to invite our guests to Choose Fun with Carnival, Italian Style!”

Mario Zanetti, president of Costa Cruises, said, “We are excited to see these iconic ships make their debut in the U.S. under the leadership and operation of our sister brand.”

Both Costa Venezia and Costa Firenze will continue operating their Costa itineraries until they are assigned to Carnival for dry dock work and deployment. Costa Venezia and Costa Firenze are actually sister ships to current Carnival Cruise Line ships Carnival Vista, Carnival Horizon and Carnival Panorama, making the operation transition a little easier.

“This is an exciting opportunity for us to operate two additional beautiful Vista class ships in the U.S. and bring a unique experience to those who love the culture, food and vibe of Italy,” said Duffy.

Another Costa Ship on the Move

This isn’t the first ship-swap between the two lines this year. Just days ago, the two lines announced Costa Luminosa will join the Carnival fleet in September of this year on a permanent basis.

“With our full fleet back to guest operations and the pent-up demand for Carnival we are seeing every week aboard our ships, the chance to expand with Luminosa and then the arrival of Carnival Celebration in November provides our guests with more choices and new ways to enjoy a Carnival vacation,” said Christine Duffy at the time.

A&K Travel Group Buys Crystal Cruises’ Brand, 2 Ships

by Porthole Cruise and Travel June 22, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

One of the biggest storylines to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic was the demise of luxury cruise operator Crystal Cruises. Long considered one of the top high-end cruise brands, the cruise line left behind a fleet of river and ocean ships that many believed would be scooped up by other cruise lines.

We now know the fate of Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony as it was announced today they’ve been purchased by A&K Travel Group, a travel company owned by Geoffrey Kent, and Heritage, an industrial holding company chaired by Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio, the former owner of Silversea Cruises.

The New Crystal Cruises

The two ships will resume service in 2023 after undergoing extensive refurbishment and will operate under the “Crystal Cruises” brand that has also been acquired by A&K Travel Group Ltd.

Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio commented on starting a new chapter in his long history in the cruise industry.

“I am thrilled to start this new chapter and to be back in an industry that has always had, and always will have a special place in my heart. Thirty-five years ago, my family acquired control of Sitmar Cruises, building three of the first purpose-built cruise ships, and 30 years ago my family pioneered a new way of cruising. Our goal was to deliver the best experience, pampering guests from all over the world with around-the-clock butler service and extraordinary culinary experiences. Selling the cruise business that belonged to my family for a quarter of a century was a difficult decision, as I knew I would miss this industry immensely. Therefore, when the opportunity arose to acquire Crystal Cruises, I did not think about it twice. Having next to me my incredible friend and inspiring leader Geoffrey Kent makes this venture even more enjoyable,” said Lefebvre d’Ovidio.

Geoffrey Kent remarked how his long working and personal relationship with Lefebvre d’Ovidio made this partnership the right decision.

“Even though it seems like yesterday, 30 years have passed since the Lefebvre family and I had our first ship together…Manfredi and I have been best friends and business associates ever since. The idea of combining the unparalleled onboard service that Crystal Cruises is known for, with the extraordinary tailor-made experiences Abercrombie & Kent has been successfully providing for our guests for the past 60 years, fills me with excitement, enthusiasm and pride,” said Kent.

Both MSC ships will be powered by LNG fuel, which will help eliminate local air pollution emissions.

Windstar Celebrates 35 Years of Tahiti Cruises

by Porthole Cruise and Travel June 21, 2022
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

In honor of 35 years sailing French Polynesia, Windstar Cruises will sail additional itineraries in Tahiti this October and year-round beginning in 2024.  The cruise line will also host a 7-day President’s Cruise on October 9th on board Star Breeze which will feature events with Tahitian government officials/tourism partners,  local entertainment, Windstar’s signature event motu celebration in Bora Bora, and other special programming.

“The entire month is a celebration of Tahiti,” says Windstar Cruises’ President Christopher Prelog. “We are now planning special events with local artists and dignitaries, as well as an ongoing celebration of local culture. Our designated President’s Cruise on the October 9th sailing will also bring aboard some high-ranking leaders of Tahiti along with executives from Windstar. We want it to be a way to thank our local partners, vendors, and everyone in local tourism that makes this destination so special, as well as renew our relationships and commitments for sailing in the future.”

In October, Windstar will move the all-suite, 312-guest Star Breeze to French Polynesia. The all-suite Star Breeze features newly renovated guest suites, two new restaurants, a new World Spa, and an infinity pool. In February 2024, Star Breeze will move to Tahiti year-round in place of Wind Spirit.

Windstar Cruises in Tahiti

French Polynesian President Edouard Fritch expressed excitement that Windstar Cruises would be bringing more guests to the collection of 121 islands and atolls which make up the region.

“For 35 years, Windstar has participated in the development of cruising and the economy in our islands, thanks to their first three sailing cruise ships, pioneers of sustainable tourism,” said Fritch. “Like our seafaring ancestors who connected the islands of this vast ocean, Windstar connected our peoples and our cultures. We are delighted to be able to celebrate our long relationship together. I would also like to thank Mr. Prelog and his teams for the trust they place in our destination by positioning Star Breeze in 2024 in French Polynesia. This ship will make it possible to share the Polynesian experience with a greater number of guests, to visit more remote islands of our archipelagos, and to contribute to the prosperity of our families in their islands. More than paradisiacal landscapes to discover, the Islands of Tahiti offers you unique experiences and unforgettable encounters.”
