MSC Cruises’ Ocean Cay Recognized As ‘Hope Spot’ For Conservation

by Porthole Cruise and Travel July 12, 2023
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

The private island Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, owned by MSC Cruises, has received the designation of a “Hope Spot” by Mission Blue. This recognition comes from the non-profit organization founded by oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle, dedicated to preserving marine ecosystems. Pierfrancesco Vago, MSC Foundation Board Member, Executive Committee Chair, and Executive Chairman of the Cruise Division of MSC Group, has been chosen as the island’s Hope Spot Champion.

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve now stands among Mission Blue’s collection of 154 Hope Spots worldwide. These designated areas hold significance for the health of the world’s oceans, with the shared objective of becoming Marine Protected Areas. The selection process for these spots involves evaluation by the Hope Spot Council, consisting of marine scientists and policy experts, ensuring that the chosen locations align with stringent criteria and address critical global marine conservation priorities.

Since MSC Cruises assumed ownership of Ocean Cay in 2015, the island has undergone a remarkable transformation following decades of industrial use and aragonite sand mining. Through a collaborative effort involving the Government of The Bahamas, renowned universities, marine scientists, and conservationists, MSC Cruises embarked on an ambitious restoration initiative to revive the island’s ecosystems.

Investments have led to significant achievements in the restoration project. The introduction of nearly 5,000 trees and 75,000 native plants, flowers, and shrubs has improved the island’s environment. The surrounding waters have shown signs of recovery, with thriving marine life, including loggerhead sea turtles, indicating improved ecosystem health. The recognition of Ocean Cay as a ‘Hope Spot’ highlights the crucial role that restored ecosystems, such as Ocean Cay, play in promoting biodiversity and contributing to the overall well-being of the world’s oceans.

The Marine Restoration Program encompasses an extensive area of 25 square miles, encompassing marine waters and ecosystems surrounding Ocean Cay. In 2019, the MSC Foundation initiated the Super Coral Program as an expansion of this program, specifically focusing on the restoration of the island’s coral reefs. Through scientific collaboration and advanced research, the Super Coral Program identifies resilient coral genotypes, known as “super corals,” that have naturally developed the ability to withstand temperature changes. The selected corals are strategically transplanted to foster the growth of more robust and resilient reefs capable of withstanding the adverse effects of climate change-induced heat events.

The MSC Foundation remains committed to advancing restoration efforts and raising awareness about the importance of ocean conservation on a global scale. This initiative, encompassing large-scale restoration activities and public education initiatives, highlights the MSC Foundation’s dedication to revitalizing ocean health, promoting biodiversity, and fostering a sustainable future for the planet’s marine ecosystems.

“This recognizes the comprehensive restoration efforts and commitment to protecting marine biodiversity,” Dr. Sylvia Earle, President and Chairman of Mission Blue, said. “Led by Pierfrancesco Vago, the restoration of Ocean Cay has been a multidisciplinary effort to re-establish the ecological balance in this limestone island and its surrounding marine estate. Ocean Cay will inform thousands of people weekly about the crucial importance of growing and outplanting thermally tolerant corals for marine conservation, ocean health and human wellbeing.”

“Being designated a Hope Spot is an important recognition for Ocean Cay Marine Reserve and helps focus attention on how we all have an important duty as caretakers of our Blue Planet,” Pierfrancesco Vago, MSC Foundation Board Member and Chair of the Executive Committee, and Executive Chairman of the Cruise Division of MSC Group, said. “That responsibility is why the scientific research and restoration efforts of our Super Coral Program aim not just to create resilient coral reefs around Ocean Cay and in The Bahamas, but to simultaneously contribute to conservation knowledge and initiatives worldwide. I thank Dr. Sylvia Earle and Mission Blue for their tireless efforts, which inspire us all to cherish and safeguard the rich biodiversity of our oceans.”

Mission Blue’s recognition further validates Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve and the MSC Foundation Super Coral Program as leaders in nature conservation initiatives, highlighting their pioneering contributions to marine conservation.

PONANT Announces New Expert Led Expeditions To Antarctica’s Peninsula

by Porthole Cruise and Travel July 11, 2023
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

PONANT is now offering guests the chance to embark on small-ship polar expeditions led by world-renowned experts. The Emperor Penguins of Weddell Sea itinerary, which departs November 3-17, 2023, is an adventure into Antarctica’s most remote regions, where guests will witness emperor penguins, leopard seals, and humpback whales, among other animals. Le Commandant Charcot, the only luxury icebreaker in existence, will sail south from the Drake Passage to the icy seas of the Weddell Sea, where ice floes, enormous tabular icebergs, and Adelie penguin colonies dominate the scene. Kayaking, hiking, snowshoeing, and polar plunges will allow visitors to experience nature’s grandeur up close, while geopolitologist and VIP speaker Mikaa Mered, who specializes in the North and South Poles, will provide a unique lecture on the area.

A brand-new voyage, “In the Wake of Jean-Baptiste Charcot”, will follow the French arctic scientist’s historic path through the Bellingshausen Sea and is also planned for later this year. The creator of the Charcot Museum and former president of the Alliance Française will make an appearance onboard, making the November 28, 2023, departure even more remarkable.

In 2024, Smithsonian Journeys and PONANT will continue their collaboration, starting with the 12-day co-branded expedition “Antarctica: The White Continent”, which departs on February 26. Richard Miller, an astrophysicist, and Warne Ranney, a geologist (both Smithsonian Journeys Experts), will facilitate lively onboard discussions while providing deeper understandings of the sights and landscapes that unfold before cruisers’ eyes. This vibrant discourse will include topics such as humpback whales, seals, penguins, drifting icebergs, imposing glaciers, and relics of the continent’s past, such as former whaling and research stations. When cruisers reach the Antarctic Peninsula, passengers will follow in the footsteps of illustrious explorers like Sir Ernest Shackleton, Adrien de Gerlache, and Jean-Baptiste Charcot.

Le Commandant Charcot undertook PONANT’s maiden semi-circumnavigation of the southern continent on February 13, 2023. The 28-day journey, which covered 6,500 nautical miles and ventured to Pine Island Bay at the southeast edge of the Amundsen Sea, where no cruise ship had ever gone, was successful. Visitors may see the B22, the planet’s biggest iceberg, which is almost 4 times the size of New York City.

PONANT will sail Le Commandant Charcot on 2 additional half-circumnavigations in 2024. The first, which runs from January 8 to February 5, will connect the southernmost point of America to New Zealand by sailing to some of the most isolated islands in the world (Charcot Island, Peter I Island, and the Marie Byrd Land Islands), and traversing 3 southern seas. The second voyage, a half-circumnavigation of the Antarctic, departs from February 6 to March 3 and is modeled by Jules Dumont d’Urville and Douglas Mawson’s heroic Era excursions. It will traverse 5 southern seas and aim to reach the Magnetic South Pole.

Both vessels contain 50 suites and staterooms, with 88 percent of the rooms boasting a private balcony with a terrace. The first voyage is set to depart on November 18, 2023. Emerald Sakara will be christened on December 2, 2023, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, by her godmother Kelly Craighead, President and CEO of Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA).

Emerald Cruises presents a diverse collection of river and yacht cruises across three continents. One of their remarkable offerings is Emerald Azzurra, a luxurious yacht that embarked on its maiden voyage in March 2022. With a capacity for 100 guests, it sails through the inviting Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas, and starting from the 2023/2024 season, it will also explore the Caribbean and Central America. Cruise Critic’s 2022 Editors’ Picks Awards honored Emerald Azzurra as the Best New Luxury Ship in November 2022. In August 2023, Emerald Sakara, the brand’s second luxury yacht, will be launched.

Alongside their yacht experiences, Emerald Cruises operates eight specially designed Star-Ships for European river cruises and one on the Mekong River. Their commitment to exceptional service is complemented by their innovative ship designs, active shore excursions, and onboard wellness options available through the EmeraldACTIVE program. PONANT’s Newbuild Ship Leads The Way To Zero Carbon Navigation

by Porthole Cruise and Travel July 5, 2023
written by Porthole Cruise and Travel

PONANT is beginning the development of a uniquely designed ocean vessel, driving its transition toward carbon neutrality. Through the work of its R&D team, the company has created a concept that combines six technologies, aiming to revolutionize future navigation. Set for completion in 2030, this ship aims to be a catalyst for new energy solutions for PONANT and the broader industry. While partnering with naval architecture Stirling Design International, PONANT actively engages in discussions to select the shipyard responsible for constructing the vessel.

“By 2030, our future ship aims to have zero greenhouse gas emissions when sailing, maneuvering, in port, or at anchor,” explains Hervé Gastinel, CEO of PONANT. “Her carbon footprint will be reduced throughout her life cycle. Renewable energy supplied by the wind and sun will be combined with low-carbon non-fossil energy associated with fuel cells.”

Holding 100 staterooms and coming in at 181 meters in length, PONANT’s newest addition to its fleet will help carry the company toward net-zero emissions. The ship will comply with new European and international regulations regarding greenhouse gas emissions. The ship’s design holds sustainability at its forefront, with materials and equipment being selected based on their durability and potential for future recycling.

PONANT’s net-zero emissions initiative, Swap2Zero, aims for zero CO2 eq (all CO2-related emissions) emissions in all cruise ship operations. Swap2Zero attempts to speed up the decarbonization of the cruise ship industry by:

  • Utilizing a set of sails and a uniquely-designed hull that provide around half of the ship’s propulsion capacity.
  • Over 1,000 square meters of photovoltaic panels, with the sails being equipped with solar-power capabilities as well.
  • A liquid hydrogen-powered low-temperature fuel cell for propulsion, with the byproducts of water and heat getting recycled.
  • Also using a high-temperature fuel cell to power the ship’s hotel functions, with the byproduct of heat being used to produce hot water.
  • A carbon capture technology, also powered by the high-temperature fuel cell.
  • A generator-free energy management and distribution system.

The new ship will also uphold PONANT’s commitment to scientists. As part of the PONANT SCIENCE program, she will host several scientists involved in combatting global warming.

“PONANT is a company of sailors focused on exploration and innovation, and it is this pioneering spirit that is inspiring the whole Swap2Zero programme,” says Hervé Gastinel, CEO of PONANT. “This is much more than a new ship. We want to offer a new mode of navigation and actively contribute to the decarbonization of the maritime sector. Our in-house R&D team has brought together the best specialists in shipbuilding and renewable energy to imagine and develop an energy model that aims at zero emissions. With Swap2Zero, we are building a French technological showcase to convince other stakeholders to commit to carbon-neutral navigation.”
